How I hawked pounded yam, kerosene, and more to make a way for myself” Kemi Korede reflects on her humble beginnings

Just a few weeks back, Kemi Korede reflected on her humble beginnings.

Taking to her Instagram page to share a childhood photo of herself, Kemi Korede reminisced on her past when things were hard for her.

Kemi Korede recounted how she hawked pounded yam, kerosene, raw yam, and more to make ends meet.

According to her, growing up was so difficult and she suffered so much to make a way for herself.

She never imagined she could come this far but she was determined that she has to be great to care of my parents.

Encouraging her fans, she told them to strive hard to make it and not give up on themselves.

When I came across this song on TikTok. I had a flashback of my past when things were so hard. I remember when I was hawking pounded yam, kerosene, raw yam, or anything that comes out during that season. Growing up was so difficult. I suffered so much to make a way for myself.
I never imagined I could come this far…
But I was determined that I have to be great to take care of my parent. Here I am today, Alhamdulilah Wa Shukran.

Pls, you all striving so hard to make it, pls don’t give up on yourself… Keep praying… God will say Yes to your prayers very soon…
Everyone that come across this video and those that did not. God will say yes to your hustle very very soon Insha Allah.

Thank you, Lord”.

A few days later, Kemi Korede penned heartwarming accolades to celebrate the CEO of Korede Films, Sunday Soyinka, on his birthday.

Kemi Korede shared photos from his birthday with her fans, appreciating him for his impact on her life and career.

The movie star acknowledged Sunday Soyinka as the man who made her who she is as an actress, stating he selflessly gave her opportunities as a young star.

She further promises to keep making the celebrant proud and happy while praying that God’s blessings will be on him.

Idris Elba calls for peace as Sierra Leone elections nears

0

Idris Elba

British actor Idris Elba, who also has Sierra Leonean citizenship and heritage, has called for a peaceful general election in Sierra Leone, which will take place on Saturday.

“This election please let it be peaceful,” he said in a message in Pidgin English.

He reminded young people that they have the “power” in this vote, and that if the country is destroyed due to violence, it will be down to Sierra Leoneans to have to patch it back up again.

“Not only is the world watching,” he said, but the whole of Africa.

Saturday’s vote will be the country’s sixth presidential vote since a military takeover in 1992.

It will see the incumbent, President Julius Madaa Bio of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) go up against Dr Samura Kamara of the All People’s Congress (APC).

There have been arrests of critical opposition voices in the the run up to the vote.

Elba’s comments come on the same day that the Commonwealth Observer Group in Sierra Leone, led by former Nigerian Vice President Professor Yemi Osinbajo, called for peaceful elections that will reflect the will of the people.

“The eyes of more than 2.5 billion people of the Commonwealth – more than 60% of whom are young people under the age of 30 – will be upon Sierra Leone. Watching, in solidarity and in hope,” Prof. Osinbajo said.

Oboy Siki

Kumawood actor Nana Kofi Agyeman, otherwise called Oboy Siki, has said that he is a real gem when it comes to womanizing.

According to him, that aspect of him is from birth and it is not something that he picked up while growing up.

The actor, who has gained notoriety for making weird statements, made this known in an interview on Akoma FM.

“I am a womanizer by birth, and the movie industry also helped shaped my womanizing character,” he surprisingly stated.

Oboy Siki is currently one of the most relevant names in Kumawood. He is not just known for his entertaining and comedy roles in movies, but also one of the controversial names who doesn’t hold back.

He says it as it is. According to him, he is a womanizer and he is proud of it.

Last week, he was in the news for making unfounded allegations about fellow actor Agya Koo’s new mansion, alleging that it was funded by the New Patriotic Party (NPP). However, he made a U-turn to retract his claim saying it was a fabricated story he told.

1992 constitution only good at helping us elect dictators

0

The Member of Parliament for Asawase, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka says the country’s 1992 constitution only helps in the election of a dictator as a President.

The lawmaker contends that the constitution offers the President too much power in the discharge of his duties.

“I have always said with the greatest respect that the 1992 Constitution only helps us to elect a dictator because if you look at the Constitution, all it does is create a monster president who is a superhuman and does almost everything and a lot of checks have to be corrected in the current constitution.

His comment comes on the back of a concern raised by the Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu about the delegation of the Vice President as the Acting President in the absence of the President.

In his reaction, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka called for the implementation of the recommendations by the Constitutional Amendment Commission to address such concerns.

“I keep asking what is preventing us from implementing the recommendations of the Constitutional Amendment Commission because since 2013, we have virtually iced it yet a lot of work has been done and it is just left with the implementation and we have left it hanging. Are we anticipating another amendment because the work the Committee did is very extensive?”

The NDC lawmaker further bemoaned the lack of checks and balances in the country’s democratic practice.

“We all know that in a presidential system, checks and balances must exist but that is a system that has been very difficult for us to do for the past 30 years.”

Black Stars AFCON winner asserts superiority of local coaches over Chris Hughton

Chris Hughton

Ghana football legend, Mohammed Polo has taken a swipe at  Black Stars coach, Chris Hughton, criticizing his tactical prowess.

His comment comes following Ghana’s goalless game against Madagascar in the matchday five games of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Polo beleives that Hughton should be relieved of his position, suggesting that there are local league coaches who could perform better.

He argued that Hughton should be replaced with a coach who possesses a better understanding of excellent football and can bring out the best in the players.

According to him, the local league in Ghana boasts coaches who play quality football and are far superior to Hughton.

“In the local league, we have better coaches who play quality football and are far superior to Chris,” Polo stated in an interview with Rainbow Sports.

“We observed the level of excellence they brought to their games. We witnessed the calibre of players they developed and employed in their games.

“These coaches are unquestionably superior to the current coach of the Black Stars. This coach did not produce quality players or football. We must fire him and replace him with a better coach who understands excellent football.”

Meanwhile, the Black Stars who still sit top of Group E with 9 points will wrap up their qualifiers with a home game against the Central African Republic (CAR) in September later this year.

GFA condemns assault on female referee in Northern Region

0

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) in the Northern Region has condemned Napari Suheru for assaulting a female referee during a Division 1B football match near the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium in Tamale on June 17, 2023.

The Northern Regional Football Association Secretary, Abdul Gafaru Abdul Karim described Mr. Suheru as a lovely person who is well-known in the footballing fraternity in the region and so it came as a surprise when news of his actions broke out.

Mr. Abdul Karim in an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, indicated that Mr. Suheru is one of the people in the region with the highest number of football clubs and that his assault on the referee was uncalled-for.

“He has many clubs in the region. He has a Division Two club, he has a Women’s Division 1A club, he has a Women’s 2B club, he has juvenile clubs in under 17, under 15, under 13, and even under 8 and so it is surprising that such a person will do that.”

The GFA’s secretary however assured that the association is doing its best to prevent hooliganism in match centres.

“We have a good collaboration with the military and the police service at the regional level, and so we will make sure that security is there at match centres to protect everybody at the centre because there are instances when supporters will decide to invade each other, and so we are doing our best, and we will try to continue the good work we are doing, and our regional chairman is doing his possible best and going round to monitor matches to ensure that there is peace.”

The police arrested Mr. Suheru on Monday, June 19 to help with investigations.

$3bn IMF deal: Bokpin cautions against being overly optimistic

0

Professor Godfred Bokpin

A Professor at the University of Ghana Business School, Godfred Bokpin has cautioned against being overly optimistic about Ghana’s economic recovery due to the $3billion International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme.

He indicated that the economic recovery is going to be slow and painful.

Prof Bokpin was commenting on the update that was given by the Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta on the programme. The Finance Minister had indicated that the deal significantly paved the way for the implementation of an ambitious and well-thought-out programme of reform for our economy and country.

“In fact, the real work of adjustments, re-alignments and the return to a path of steady economic growth has just begun,” he said while providing updates on the deal at a press encounter on Sunday.

The approval was secured on Wednesday, May 17 with the first tranche of $600 million received.

The Finance Minister stated that “Let us brace ourselves for the needed reforms, especially in expenditure control, non-arrears accumulation, revenue growth, ECG collections and Energy Sector reforms, in order to rebuild the walls of the Republic with urgency.

“That said, our reform programme, the Post COVID-19 Programme for Economic Growth
(PC-PEG), now supported by the 3-year Extended Credit Facility arrangement with the
IMF, is built on clear targets and strong policy and structural measures.”

Reacting to this on the Business Focus with Paa Kwasi Asare on TV3 Monday, June 19, Prof Bokpin said “If you look at the way the programme has been structured, Ghana actually started implementing some of the projects in the programme, our prior actions, even before the board approval. So if you see utility adjustments, they are prior actions we had to follow before the board approval but I think broadly we seem to be overly optimistic, I think from the Finance Ministers’ perspective.

“I think we need to be cautious because the recovery is going to be slow, it is going to be painful, you need to look at this within context also.  I think if you look at Ghana’s inflation probably it is one of the highest in Africa, food inflation and the rest of them, and typically if that is coming down we say it is good news but it is still very high.

“If you are celebrating inflation at 42.2 percent, by world average it is still very especially if you look at food inflation.”

Brendan Rodgers Returns To Celtic

Brendan Rodgers

Brendan Rodgers has returned as Celtic manager, the club announced yesterday, four years after he ended his first spell to join Leicester City.

Rodgers won seven domestic trophies with the club during his first stint at Celtic Park, including an unbeaten season and consecutive trebles, before leaving to take over at Leicester in 2019.

“Celtic Football Club is delighted to announce that Brendan Rodgers has been appointed the club’s new Football Manager on a three-year contract,” Celtic said in a statement.

“Brendan previously managed the club to phenomenal success, winning consecutive domestic Trebles and in addition delivering the most famous of invincible seasons.”

The 50-year-old enjoyed a successful spell with Leicester, leading them to two fifth-place finishes in the Premier League and an FA Cup title triumph in 2021. However, he has been out of work since he was sacked in April, with Leicester later relegated on the final day of the season.

Celtic has been in search of a new manager after Ange Postecoglou left to take over as the new Tottenham head coach earlier this month.

“I am really delighted to return to Celtic and I am hugely excited by this great opportunity,” Rodgers said. “When I was given the privilege of being asked to join the club again, it was a very simple decision for me and my family.

“We have enjoyed some great times at Celtic before and this will be my goal again, to deliver good football, ensure we have a team we all love to watch and ultimately bring more success to our fans.”

47% engaged in substance misuse

The escalating rates of drug abuse among women in Ghana have become a growing concern for the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC).

Francis Opoku Amoah, the Acting Director of Public Affairs and International Relations at NACOC, revealed that a startling 47% of females aged 15 to 65 are now involved in drug abuse.

This disconcerting revelation comes ahead of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking on June 26th.

The theme for this year’s observance is “People First: Stop Stigma and Discrimination, Strengthen Prevention.”

During an interview on Adom FM’s program, Burning Issues, Mr. Amoah shared his firsthand observations from visiting rehabilitation centers, noting a significant shift in the demographics of drug abuse.

He stated, “Previously, drug abuse was predominantly associated with men. However, statistics from the centers show that 53% of males and 47% of females between the ages of 15 and 65 are now engaged in drug abuse. While males still dominate the drug abuse statistics, the increasing numbers among females are worrisome.”

Mr. Amoah delved into the factors contributing to this trend, highlighting peer pressure and a sense of adventure as influential factors leading men towards drug abuse.

For women, he identified relationships, peer pressure, and a desire for exploration as significant elements contributing to drug abuse.

To address this growing menace, Mr. Amoah emphasized the importance of education and awareness, particularly targeting the youth.

He stressed, “Many individuals who abuse drugs are unaware of the harmful effects. It is crucial to conduct extensive education campaigns to sensitize young people about the dangers of drug abuse and the urgent need to abstain from it.”

Furthermore, Mr. Amoah urged women entangled in relationships that promote drug abuse to sever ties with such partners.

He also expressed concerns about the inadequate number of rehabilitation centers in the country to effectively treat individuals struggling with drug addiction.

Highlighting a significant shift in the legal approach, Mr. Amoah pointed out that the recent transformation from the Narcotics Control Board to the Narcotics Control Commission has resulted in revised punishments for drug offenders.

Instead of immediate imprisonment, individuals arrested for involvement in hard drugs now undergo evaluation by both judges and medical professionals.

Based on their assessment, recommendations for rehabilitation rather than imprisonment are made, signifying a shift towards a more holistic approach to address drug addiction in Ghana.

Traditional retail regaining market share as shoppers return to low-taxed stores

0

Managing partner at Konfidants, Michael Kottoh has expressed the impact of the recent revenue mobilisation exercise by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) on bigger supermarkets in the country.

Mr. Kottoh disclosed that the GRA’s recent revenue drive revealed an interesting trend where traditional retail is beginning to recover and reclaim the market share the biggest supermarkets had taken away from the sector some years back.

Speaking during the third forum of this year’s Citi Business Festival on Citi TV, on the topic ‘The Changing Face of the Ghanaian Retail Market,’ Mr. Kottoh said the traditional retail sector is taking a positive turn as a result of the trend.

“Even though the biggest supermarkets and online [platforms] are taking off, they are not necessarily adversely impacting the traditional retail market, it is so resilient. Traditional retail is beginning to take advantage of online to extend its market reach is beginning to get wider again.

“We have also seen traditional retail beginning to recover some of the market shares that they were beginning to lose to the big supermarkets and the biggest driver of this trend is the recent aggressive drive by the GRA to tax the biggest supermarkets so a lot of price-sensitive shoppers are beginning to return to the traditional retailers because that is basically a low and zero taxed retail segment and that is reinforcing the resilience of traditional retailers.”

People perform yoga at Trafalgar Square in London

0

People in London on Tuesday performed yoga at Trafalgar Square in Central London to celebrate the International Day of Yoga. The event was organised by the Indian High Commission in the UK and the Mayor of London.

High Commissioner of India to the UK, Vikram Doraiswami also performed yoga along with people at Trafalgar Square in Central London. International Day of Yoga is set to be celebrated on June 21. Author Amish Tripathi also took part in the Yoga event in Central London.

Speaking to ANI, Vikram Doraiswami said: “I think my colleagues and I did more yoga than even the yoga school people did because each of them did about 35-40 minutes each. We ended up doing it for all 2 hours, but it was great because I think even the weather was super. It rained a bit in the morning and we’ve had cloud cover, so it wasn’t a really hot sunny day. Otherwise, this could have been a bit of a warm day for yoga. I think this was just perfect.”

He noted that yoga schools did a terrific job of synchronising the yoga session. He further said, “People came out in good numbers and from all communities to take part in the Yoga Day event held at Trafalgar Square in Central London today.”

Sharing glimpses of the International Day of Yoga celebrations, the High Commission of India in London in the tweet stated, “Yoga lovers from around London have gathered at the historic @trafalgar square to celebrate the International Day of Yoga, spreading positivity and tranquility.” In another tweet, the High Commission of India in London stated, “Some more glimpses of 9th #IDY2023 at the iconic Trafalgar Square, London.”

“Trafalgar Square London. Common Yoga Protocol in progress ! The theme of this year “One Earth,One Family,One Future,” the High Commission of India in London further said.

Speaking to ANI, Amish Tripathi said: “It was fantastic, this is an iconic location in London, as you can see, we have the Nelson’s Column out here, the museum out here, Trafalgar Square. Everyone passes through here and most of London and we did yoga in the morning right out here. It’s kind of like a build-up to Yoga day. This is the 20 June, so we did it as a build-up to the International Day of Yoga.”

He further said, “What was wonderful was that it was raining very heavily in the morning and we were very concerned. But, we prayed very hard and the rain Gods, Lord Indra listened to us. The rain stopped just in time and because ofthe rains it was nice and cool as well. So it was a wonderful day of yoga.”

This year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead the International Day of Yoga celebration at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

PM Modi on Tuesday emplaned for the United States for his first historic State visit. Prior to leaving for the US, PM Modi tweeted, “Leaving for USA, where I will attend programmes in New York City and Washington DC. These programmes include Yoga Day celebrations at the @UNHQ, talks with @POTUS @JoeBiden, address to the Joint Session of the US Congress and more.”

PM Modi is visiting the US at the invitation of US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden. The visit will commence in New York where the Prime Minister will lead the celebrations of the International Day of Yoga at the United Nations Headquarters on June 21.

Ghanaian actress Yvonne Nelson has recently been confronted with a devastating truth—her late father, Mr Okoe Nelson, whom she has publicly called out as a deadbeat dad, is not her biological father. In an emotional revelation, Yvonne Nelson expressed deep regret and pain over her long-standing resentment towards a man who, as it turns out, was not her real father.

Yvonne Nelson’s memoir, titled “I Am Not Yvonne Nelson,” features a chapter in which she discloses the shocking revelation. The actress shares her profound remorse for tarnishing Mr Nelson’s reputation, apologizing for her hurtful words and actions. Sadly, she discovered the truth about her parentage when Mr Nelson was on his deathbed, and she couldn’t reach him in time to seek forgiveness.

In her heartfelt apology, Yvonne Nelson explains that her negative perception of her father stemmed from what her mother had told her about him. Growing up, she believed her mother’s claims that Mr Nelson did not like her and rejected her. This belief shaped her resentful attitude towards him and led her to publicly criticize him in interviews. Yvonne Nelson expresses that she did not have any reason to doubt her mother’s words at the time.

The actress emphasizes that no child should be blamed for harboring negative feelings towards a parent they were led to believe didn’t care for them. Yvonne Nelson reveals that her book’s intention is not only to apologize but also to shed light on the truth of her identity and the strained relationship between herself and her mother.

Yvonne Nelson’s revelation has had a profound impact on her relationship with her mother. She expresses her confusion and hurt over why her mother lied to her about her true parentage. The actress discloses that she has not seen her mother for over a year, indicating the severe strain caused by this revelation.

The disclosure of Yvonne Nelson’s real parentage marks the climax of her memoir and challenges the perception surrounding her identity. With her newfound understanding, she renounces the name “Nelson” and embraces her true self, as expressed in the book’s title, “I Am Not Yvonne Nelson.”

The memoir not only serves as a personal account of Yvonne Nelson’s journey but also highlights the impact of parental deception on a person’s life. As she continues to search for her true father, Yvonne Nelson’s story reminds us of the importance of honesty and the profound effects of familial secrets.

Assin North: NPP executives visit NDC accident victims [Photos]

New Patriotic Party (NPP) executives visited some National Democratic Congress (NDC) members who are receiving treatment at St. Francis Hospital at Assin Fosu following a car accident over the weekend.

The delegation was led by the National Communications Director of the NPP, Richard Ahiagbah.

“We share a common weakness. These are NDC accident victims. We spent time with them at St. Francis Hospital in Assin Fosu today and provided support. Great commendations to Mr. Jay Hyde, NPP Deputy Youth Organizer & Mr. Alfred Thompson, NPP National Comms team, NPP, God bless you, guys…” he tweeted.

A ghastly accident on Saturday resulted in the loss of life of a member of the NDC during a campaign tour in the Assin North constituency.

According to multiple reports, the vehicle involved belonged to the Ashanti regional youth organizer of the NDC and was part of a convoy accompanying former President John Dramani Mahama, who was touring the constituency to garner support for his party’s candidate, James Gyakye Quayson.

Meanwhile, the bye-election was slated for June 27, 2023, for Assin North after a Supreme Court panel recently ruled that Gyakye Quayson’s election as a Member of Parliament for the area was unconstitutional, null, and void.

AG Rejects Ato Forson Payment Plan | Economy

0

The Office of the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice has rejected a proposal by Big Sea on behalf of businessman, Richard Jakpa, who is standing trial alongside Minority Leader and former Deputy Minister of Finance, |Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson for causing €2.37 million financial loss to the state.

The proposal, according to a confidential source, sought to pay the cedi equivalent of €2 million in two tranches – €500,000 upon settlement of the agreement and a further €1.5 million spread over a period of six months.

The company as part of the proposal is also seeking Government of Ghana to return the 30 defective ambulances with all the accessories they came once repayment has been made, as well discontinue the criminal prosecution of all three accused persons.

The proposal sent to the Attorney General indicates that it was necessitated by Big Sea’s desire to protect its interest across West African sub-region, especially when it is not part of the ongoing trial, hence would not have the opportunity to defend itself against allegations that irreparably damage its reputation and business interest.

But the Office of the Attorney General has rejected the terms proposed by the company for various reasons, among which include the fact that the proposed money does not make up for the entire money the state lost as result of the purchase of the 30 defective ambulances, which according to trial documents are ordinary buses and do not meet the specification of an ambulance.

Another reason for the rejection of the proposal, DAILY GUIDE understands, is that the proposal only covers one of the three accused persons and there is no admission of guilt by Mr. Jakpa or any of the accused persons with respect to the charges levelled against them.

Dr. Forson was expected to open his defence last Thursday but the court had to adjourn the case to allow Mr. Jakpa to further negotiate with the Office of the Attorney General on the proposal put forward.

It is not clear if any changes have been made to the previous proposal and if the AG maintains its stance, then Dr. Forson, barring any last-minute changes, would open his defence today.

Dr. Ato Forson, Sylvester Anemana, a former Chief Director at the Ministry of Health, as well as private businessman, Richard Jakpa, are standing trial for willfully causing financial loss of €2.37 million to the state, through a contract to purchase 200 ambulances for the Ministry of Health, among other charges.

An Accra High Court on March 30, 2023, ordered Dr. Forson and two others to open their defence in a trial in which they are accused of purchasing defective vehicles as ambulances for the Ministry of Health.

The court, presided over by Justice Afia Serwah Asare-Botwe, a Court of Appeal judge sitting as an additional High Court judge, in a ruling held that the three had a case to answer in the charges of causing financial loss and others levelled against them by the Office of the Attorney General in a deal that saw the state spending €2.37 million on the defective ambulances.

She held that both the prosecution and the defence teams admit in one way or the other that the ambulances that were imported were defective, so “If you have spent money on a vehicle that cannot be used, then there is a case to be answered.”

The prosecution, led by the Attorney General and Minster for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame and Director of Public Prosecutions, Yvonne Atakora-Obuobisa, closed its case on February 14, 2023 after calling five witnesses, including the Minister of Health, Kwaku Agyeman-Manu to prove its case.

The main issue raised during the prosecution’s case was whether the defective vehicles were purchased in accordance with the purchase agreement approved by Parliament.

The other was whether Dr. Forson was authorised by the substantive Finance Minister or any superior officer to write a letter to the Controller and Accountant General directing the establishment of irrevocable Letters of Credit (LCs) which led to the payments.

The Attorney General, in a written submission to establish the prosecution’s case, asserted that Dr. Forson was criminally reckless in not ensuring that the terms of the agreement were adhered, and that resulted in the institution of the criminal case against him.

Dr. Forson, in submission, argues that he wrote the letter on behalf of the then substantive Minister of Finance, Seth Terkper. The AG disagrees with the assertion and argues that the letters were written with no authorisation from any quarters.

His lawyer says he will appeal, according to Dutch broadcaster RTL.

The 31-year-old was also charged by Dutch prosecutors last month for his alleged involvement in drugs trafficking.

Subsidy: Uniosun expends over N31million on palliatives

0

The administration of Osun State University stated on Monday that it had spent more than N31 million on providing palliative care for its staff as a result of the subsidy being abolished.

Professor Clement Adebooye, the university’s vice chancellor, explained that the institution’s multi-campus structure made the gesture necessary in response to questions from the media in Osogbo. Ademola Adeleke, the state governor, received gratitude from him as well for permitting the palliatives.

In the words of the executive governor himself, “The management of the university has decided to make a recommendation to the executive governor in the absence of the governing council to sanction payment of one-off palliatives to our personnel. He also granted the payment. This is due to the commitment of our workers, who frequently travel between campuses to complete various tasks.

“We pay every junior staff member N20,000, every major career staff member N25,000, those above that level N30,000, and the senior staff member N40,000.”

“We have a category of workers we call support staff; they are not our permanent staff; we contract them to support the services of the university, and we paid each of them N10,000. The principal officials received N75,000, and we also have a category of staff we call administrative staff.

“The university spent a total of thirty-one million, six hundred and twenty-seven thousand naira, to pay for these one-off palliatives and other things we have done to support them.” We have revived our moribund buses back on the road, and I’m sure by now the Provost of our Colleges will utilize these buses for committee jobs between major towns and our campuses so that the cost of transportation on them will be reduced and the staff members will have an ease of life and ease of travel.

“Iyanya Was Cheating On Me With Tonto Dikeh” – Yvonne Nelson

0

Ghanaian actress, Yvonne Nelson has revealed how she found out her ex-boyfriend, popular Nigerian singer, Iyanya, was cheating on her with Nollywood actress Tonto Dikeh.

She made the revelation in her memoir, ‘I Am Not Yvonne Nelson’ launched on Sunday, June 18, 2023.

In a chapter titled “Iyanya and My Love Life”, the actress spoke about her escapades with Iyanya and how she later found out he was cheating on her.

Nelson said she thought the singer’s gesture of tattooing her initials “YN” on his waist and giving her a shoutout on his hit song ‘Ur Waist’ was an assurance that they could be together forever.

She said she was shocked when someone called her from Iyanya’s house after she returned to Ghana and broke the shocking news to her.

“The caller said anytime I left Iyanya’s place, another actress come over to him and sometimes slept over. The person felt strongly that there was something going on between them and thought I should know.

“That actress turned out to be Tonto Dikeh of Nigeria and one of the female celebrities Iyanya named in his “Ur Waist” song.

“When I was convinced about the authenticity of the information I received, I was heartbroken,” the book partly reads.

She, however, said she knew she would have eventually left the relationship even if Tonto Dikeh hadn’t come into the picture, adding that she didn’t see any reason to keep fighting for a man she had lost.

Ghana’s Legal System Under Fire: Expert Calls Supreme Court’s Decision “Almost The Worst”

0

Professor Stephen Kwaku Asare, also known as Kwaku Azar, a Fellow at the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), has strongly disapproved of the Supreme Court’s decision to nullify James Gyakye Quayson’s election as the Member of Parliament for Assin North.

In an interview on Citi TV on June 14, 2023, Professor Azar criticized the Supreme Court’s decision, calling it one of the worst cases he has seen in Ghanaian legal history. He expressed astonishment at what he perceived as the court’s misinterpretation of the Constitution, disregard for statutory provisions, and insertion of timelines where none existed.

Professor Azar elaborated on his disagreement with the court’s reasoning, particularly regarding the concept of allegiance and citizenship. He argued that owing allegiance to a country can be rooted in various reasons, not solely tied to citizenship, and that the court’s reasoning was completely bizarre.

He lamented the plethora of errors in the case, stating that despite this, the court still went ahead with its decision. James Gyakye Quayson was charged with five counts, perjury, deceit of a public officer, and false declaration in February 2022.

During the trial in July 2022, his lawyers led by Lawyer Tsatsu Tsikata questioned the competency of the Prosecution’s First Witness, Richard Takyi-Mensah, a teacher, and his subsequent tendering of his witness statements.

However, the trial Judge Justice Mary Maame Ekue Yanzu overruled the objection on the grounds that the witness was competent and duly admitted the witness statements and paragraphs.

Dissatisfied with the High Court’s ruling, Mr. Quayson and his lawyers filed a motion at the Supreme Court seeking to quash the decision of the trial judge and order of Prohibition against the judge.

Professor Azar’s criticism of the Supreme Court’s decision raises important questions about the interpretation of the Constitution and statutory provisions, and highlights the need for a fair and just legal system in Ghana.

Only Majid Michel supported me during ban

0

Renowned Ghanaian actress Yvonne Nelson says she felt betrayed by her colleagues in the movie industry when she was slapped with a ban by the Film Producers Association of Ghana (FIPAG) in 2010.

Nelson was banned after she had an altercation with movie producer Abdul Salam Mumuni.

According to her, she felt mostly betrayed by the older female actors who turned their backs on her when she was bullied by the all-male movie producers.

In her new book titled “I Am Not Yvonne Nelson” which was launched at Peduase Lodge on Sunday, June 18, the actress said Majid Michel was the only actor who supported her through her trying times, adding that he attempted to resolve her fight with Abdul Salam.

“I also felt betrayed by my colleagues in the movie industry, especially the older female actors. I thought I was being bullied and needed their support to confront the all-male producers. If what they did to me was to send a message to those they employed to act for them; if that message was to say that nobody was indispensable and that they could choose to teach anyone they pleased a lesson; then I expected a collective voice of disapproval from the actors. That did not happen. I was alone. And I faced it squarely.

“Here again, one exception was Majid Michel, who stood by me in the thick of it all. He defended me and even tried to mediate with Abdul Salam, but it did not work. He was one of three people with whom I travelled to Akosombo to see the film producers, who had said they wanted to meet me. The others were Fred Nuamah and Frank Raja. In Akosombo, I saw Augustine Abbey, popularly known as Idikoko, among the film producers. This was a man I grew up watching on television and hoped he would encourage and inspire the young ones to grow. Instead, he was siding with a group of men who thought they controlled the bread and the whip and had the power to deny a bite to whoever refused to be whipped in their incongruous line. In the meeting, they were extremely rude”.

She further highlighted how Abdul Salam, who instigated the ban, later patched things up with her.

“I still do not understand why they wanted to meet me, for nothing concrete came out of that meeting.
Perhaps, they thought I would go and kneel and beg them to lift my ban. I didn’t do that. Frank Raja,
Majid and I left Akosombo without any sign from them that they would do something about the ban. It
continued.

Within that year, however, there were cracks in the ranks of the producers. David Owusu of Media Five
Productions defied the ban and cast me in a movie, but he was not allowed to release it until the ban was over.

Abdul Salam, who had instigated the ban came to me to patch things up. He said we should leave the
past behind us and work together. With him, I shot two movies. This was without the knowledge of the
other producers because the ban was still in place. Socrates Sarfo, a producer who asked me out for
dinner, told me how he was disappointed in the actions of Abdul Salam.

I don’t know why they all suddenly disembarked from their high horses and tried to court my affection. If
I’m to hazard a guess, however, I’ll pin it down to the failure of the intended effect of their ban. They had
thought I was going to be crushed by the ban, but they soon realised that their action had rather lifted
my profile”.

How Schools Are Allowing KIds To Identify As Cats, Horses and Dinosaurs… | Education

0

Schools are allowing children to identify as cats, horses and dinosaurs – and teachers are ‘failing to question them’, it was claimed today.

There was widespread outrage earlier this week when a 13-year-old girl was branded ‘despicable’ by her teacher for rejecting her classmate’s claim that she identified as a cat.

Now further stories are emerging of pupils who identify as animals with very human characteristics – often known as ‘furries’.

I don’t see any merit in Akufo-Addo’s criticism of rating agencies – Gatsi

0

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s criticism of the credit rating agencies should be founded on facts, Dean of the Business School of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Professor John Gatsi, has said.

Prof Gatsi says he sees no merit in President Akufo-Addo’s criticism of the agencies because the struggles of Ghana’s economy are known by everyone.

President Akufo-Addo had described the downgrade as ‘reckless’. He said the downgrades exacerbated the challenges in African countries including Ghana.

Fitch Ratings, for instance, in April this year downgraded Ghana’s Long-Term Local-Currency (LTLC) Issuer Default Rating (IDR) to ‘RD’ from ‘CCC’.

President Akufo-Addo said at the 30th Annual Meeting of the Afreximbank on Sunday, June 18 that “the AU champion for African financial institutions and leader of a country that recently had to deal with one of the most difficult periods in his post-independent history, difficulties that were exacerbated by the reckless behaviour of rating agencies that engaged in pro-cyclical downgrades that shut Ghana out of the capital market and turned a liquidity crisis into a solvency crisis.”

Reacting to this on the Ghana Tonight show on TV3 Monday, June 19, Prof Gatsi said “I don’t see any merit in the criticism, the criticism should be founded on facts and meticulous work that has been independently done but we have not done any independent assessment.

“We all do know that our economy is in trouble and we all do know that our credit has deteriorated over time and that has warranted the downgrade by the credit rating agencies.”

Finance Ministry grants clearance for payment of Rotation Nurses

0

The Finance Ministry has given clearance for the payment of allowances to Rotation Nurses who began duty in July 2022.

This was announced in a letter signed by Deputy Finance Minister, Abena Osei Asare.

The letter has directed the Controller and Accountant General to pay allowances to some 16,559 Rotation Nurses and Midwives as well as Allied Health Interns nationwide.

“By this letter, the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department is requested to effect the payment of their allowances and make appropriate deductions of Social Security and Income Tax to SSNIT and the Domestic Tax Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) respectfully when the period is over,” the letter noted.

In May 2023, there was agitation among members over the non-payment of allowances but the Rotational Nurses And Midwives Association (RNMA) urged calm as the necessary steps were being taken.

Accra, June 20, GNA – Dr Kofi Konadu Apraku, a flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has urged Party delegates to give him the chance to lead the Party into the 2024 general election.

“I have done it in President Kufuor’s era and ready to transform this country with a clear sense of direction and a shared vision of the future,” the Economist said.

Nigeria’s Tinubu Removes Security Chiefs In Major Reshuffle |

0

Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu made sweeping changes to the defence forces on Monday, forcing out the security chiefs and the head of police less than a month after taking office.

Tinubu, who was sworn in on May 29, has made security one of his major priorities and promised reforms to the sector, including recruitment of more soldiers and police officers, while paying and equipping them better.

Nigeria’s military is stretched fighting a long running Islamist insurgency in the northeast and banditry and kidnappings for ransom in the northwest as insecurity has spread to most parts of the country.

It is not unusual for a new Nigerian president to send security chiefs into early retirement upon taking office, as Tinubu did on Monday.

He picked Nuhu Ribadu, a former senior police officer and ex-head of the country’s economic and financial crimes agency, as his National Security Adviser.

Major General Christopher Musa, who until last year was leading the army’s fight against the insurgency, takes over as the new Chief of Defence Staff from Lucky Irabor.

Musa takes over leadership of the military in the aftermath of a Reuters report last year that the Nigerian Army ran a secret and illegal abortion programmetargeting women and girls who had been kidnapped and raped by Islamist militants.

Musa denied the programme ever existed and said Reuters reporting was part of a foreign effort to undermine the country’s fight against the insurgents.

Tinubu also named new commanders for the army, navy and air force as well as a new head of the Nigeria Customs Service with immediate effect.

African Leaders Urged To Enhance Collaboration For Intra-African Trade

0

Dignitaries at the opening plenary

African leaders have been urged to collaborate more as they seek to increase trade among their countries.

Speaking at the opening of the 30th Annual General Meetings of the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) in Accra, speakers highlighted the need for a more collaborative effort to boost intra-African trade in the face of the adverse economic challenges.

Minister of Finance of Egypt and Chairman of the Afreximbank Annual Meetings, Mohamed Ahmed Maait, represented by Gamal Negm, Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Egypt, was of the view that Africans must work collaboratively towards finding integrated solutions to the new challenges confronting the continent.

He lauded Afreximbank for playing a significant role in developing and implementing solutions like the just launched insurance subsidiary to address the challenges confronting Africa and expressed the hope that AAM2023 would lead to even more constructive solutions to Africa’s problems.

Secretary-General of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat, Wamkele Mene, on his part said that with the inclusion of a vision for an integrated African market in the founding treaty of the OAU, the founding fathers of the AU had foreseen the need for Afreximbank.

Mr. Mene noted that if trade barriers were eliminated but there was no trade finance, all the efforts would come to nothing. At the same time, if trade finance was available but trade barriers persisted and prevented trade, then all the efforts would still have been wasted.

He therefore commended the support and collaboration which Afreximbank had provided for the implementation of the AfCFTA, including the introduction of the AfCFTA Adjustment Fund and the establishment of the Pan-African Payment and settlement System (PAPPS) adding that the support was critical as Africa sought to rely on itself to create a better future.

Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Ernest Addison said Ghana represented the most appropriate venue for the celebration of Afreximbank’s 30th anniversary, given the Bank’s role in developing and promoting African trade and the fact that Ghana was the home of the AfCFTA Secretariat.

Dr. Addison said that Afreximbank had been very supportive of Ghana and had, over the years, provided more than $ 2bn to support the Ghanaian economy.

He commended Afreximbank for the approach it adopted in its work which emphasised a collaborative approach in dealing with other continental institutions.

Brazil Eye Ancelotti’s Son As Coach

Carlo Ancelotti and son, Davide

The Brazilian Football Association (CBF) are considering appointing Carlo Ancelotti’s son, Davide, in a coaching role with the national team, sources have told ESPN, to help with the transition as they wait to appoint Ancelotti himself in June 2024.

CBF president, Ednaldo Rodrigues, has repeatedly stated that Ancelotti is his preferred choice to take charge of Brazil following the departure of Tite after the 2022 World Cup, but the Real Madrid boss has said he intends to see out his contract at the Bernabeu, which has one year left to run.

Sources told ESPN Brazil the CBF are looking at how best to handle the interim period, with one option being appointing Davide Ancelotti, who is serving as his father’s assistant at Madrid, to work with Brazil interim manager Ramon Menezes in the meantime.

Sources close to Ancelotti told ESPN they would not rule out the Italian taking charge of Brazil in June 2024, when his Madrid contract expires.

Davide Ancelotti, 33, first became his father’s assistant at Bayern Munich in 2016, and has since worked as his right-hand man at Napoli, Everton and now Madrid, where he is highly rated.

Brazil has already played friendlies with Morocco and Guinea, winning 4-1 in Barcelona on Saturday, since the World Cup and will face Senegal on Tuesday.

They are due to play six World Cup qualifying matches between September and November 2023, followed by a break until September 2024.

Plans have also been announced for a friendly with Spain in March 2024, which RFEF president Luis Rubiales has said will take place at the Bernabeu, as part of an anti-racism campaign over the abuse faced by Brazil and Madrid forward Vinicius Junior.

The Copa America is due to take place between June and July 2024, in the United States.

Carlo Ancelotti has coached clubs including Juventus, AC Milan, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Madrid in a 28-year managerial career, becoming the only coach to win four Champions Leagues, but has never taken charge of a national team.

Ghanaian First-Class Graduate Spotted Spraying Cars For Survival

0

In a heartbreaking turn of events, a first-class graduate from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Ghana finds herself spraying cars for a living, highlighting the harsh reality faced by many educated individuals in the country. Francisca Amoah, an Economics graduate, has been unable to secure formal employment since completing her national service at the Ghana Lands Commission.

Quoo Fante, a Ghanaian YouTuber, brought Francisca’s story to light on his YouTube channel, sharing her journey of transitioning from a highly educated individual to working in her father’s garage as a car spray artist. Determined to make ends meet, Francisca dedicated a year to learning the craft of car spraying, which happened to be her father’s business.

In her interview with Quoo Fante, Francisca urges young graduates not to fixate solely on pursuing white-collar jobs, emphasizing the importance of acquiring practical skills or crafts that can serve as alternative sources of income. Her story serves as a powerful reminder that traditional job paths are not always readily available and that adapting to different opportunities can be a means of survival in challenging times.

Francisca’s experience sheds light on the wider issue of unemployment among educated individuals in Ghana. It highlights the need for a diversified approach to education and career development, encouraging graduates to explore entrepreneurial avenues or vocational training that can provide viable options for income generation.

While Francisca’s journey may be disheartening, her resilience and determination offer inspiration to others facing similar circumstances. Through her story, she challenges societal norms and perceptions, proving that success can come from unexpected paths and that hard work in any field is deserving of respect.

As Ghanaian society reflects on Francisca’s plight, it is crucial to address the underlying factors contributing to graduate unemployment. By fostering an environment that promotes entrepreneurship, innovation, and skills development, Ghana can create more opportunities for its educated workforce and reduce the prevailing reliance on conventional job sectors.

In conclusion, Francisca Amoah’s story serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by highly educated individuals in securing employment. Her transition from a first-class graduate to a car spray artist highlights the need for a paradigm shift in the perception of alternative career paths. It is imperative for Ghana to focus on fostering a diversified economy that values and supports vocational skills, entrepreneurship, and innovation, ensuring a brighter future for all its citizens.

Return our ambulances and take your money – Big Sea tells Gov’t

0

Big Sea Trading LLC, the private company that supplied the ambulances for which the Minority Leader, Dr Cassiel Ato Forso, is standing trial has written to the government it’s intention to refund.

The company has, thus, asked the government to return the ambulances and take back its funds payment made for the vehicles.

Sources within the government have indicated that the Dubai-based outfit has written to the Attorney-General, requesting dialogue aimed at ending the trial and addressing the alleged loss suffered by the government of Ghana.

Big Sea Trading LLC has, thus, asked for the return of the 30 ambulances and is willing to refund the over €2 million paid to them.

Big Sea is also reported to have further proposed discontinuation of the prosecution of the three accused persons in the case as part of the settlement deal.

The development, according to sources, is likely to significantly change the trajectory of the trial as it offers a win-win situation for all parties involved.

The Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Godfred Dame, is said by our sources to be considering the proposal from Big Sea and does not appear opposed to clawing back the € 2.3 million paid for the ambulances.

The Minority Leader, Dr Ato Forson, former director of the Ministry of Health, Sylvester Anemana and businessman Richard Jakpa are standing trial for their roles in the purchase of ambulances for the state.

The Attorney General contends the state has lost €2.37 million due to the purchase of the ambulances which turned out to be defective.

All three persons have pleaded not guilty with the court already directing that they open their defence as the minimum threshold required for them to answer to the case against them has been met.

Assistant Director of Safety, Ghana National Fire Service GNFS, Doi Michael Ato Korsah has urged Ghanaians to patronize the Appeb Cylinder to help reduce the increasing cases of domestic fire outbreaks which are mostly attributed to cylinder explosions.

Speaking at the launch of Appeb’s cylinders in Accra Mr. Korsah noted that fire outbreaks over the years have caused a lot of property loss due to the use of substandard cylinders by the public.

He added that the service embarked on a similar unannounced visit to the Appeb cylinder manufacturing company, and noted that the new standards of the cylinder have been designed to effectively reduce the many incidences of fire outbreaks caused by substandard gas cylinders on the market.

The Appeb standard for the volumetric expansion test is higher than the 4706 local standards and the 22991 international standards, the burst test is beyond the 100 bar as per the requirements by the Ghana Standards Authority, and the minimum coating (orange) thickness is usually between 30-35% more than the minimum required standards and with a unique serial number to enhance identification and to ensure traceability.

Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry, Michael Okyere Baafi indicated that the Appeb Cylinder Manufacturing Company was established under the government’s flagship program to produce adequate and quality cylinders for households in the fight against the gas cylinder explosion which has robbed many properties and lives.

He urged the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) and other state regulators to frequently visit the manufacturing company to supervise his operations to ensure they keep up with standards.

Board Chairman, Appeb, Ebenezer Appiah assured the minister of upholding the approved standards to reduce gas cylinder explosions in the country. He also urged the Ghanaian community to patronize the cylinder product to expand its operations.

Steven Gerrard not taking up offer to manage in Saudi Pro League

0

Steven Gerrard says he will not be taking up an offer to manage in the Saudi Pro League.

The 43-year-old former Rangers boss has been out of a job since he was sacked by Aston Villa in October.

Ex-Liverpool and England captain Gerrard was pictured in Saudi Arabia earlier in June and reportedly made an offer by Al-Ettifaq.

“I was invited over there to look at a potential offer, which I did,” he said.

Speaking on Channel 4 before England’s Euro 2024 Qualifier against North Macedonia, Gerrard added: “I have been analysing that over the last couple of days. But, as we stand right now, I won’t be taking that offer up.”

Gerrard led Villa to 13 wins from 40 games during his 11 months in charge, after arriving from Rangers in November 2021.

After ending his playing career in 2016, he took his first steps in senior management with Rangers in 2018 and led the club to their first Scottish Premiership title in 10 years.

Earlier in June, Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema became the latest high-profile player to join the Saudi Pro League after leaving Real Madrid for champions Al-Ittihad.

Portugal legend Cristiano Ronaldo signed for Al Nassr in December, while several Premier League players have also been linked with a move this summer.

Northern Region: We’re open to payment plan with GWCL on GH¢39m debt

0

The Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) says it is open to negotiating with the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) to resolve a GH¢39 million debt.

The debt led to NEDCo disconnecting power to the Dalun treatment plant of GWCL, which supplies water to residents in Tamale and its environs.

NEDCo Communications Manager Maxwell Kotoka said the company would welcome a payment plan negotiation with GWCL, provided a significant amount of the debt is paid upfront.

“I am sure that we can get into some talks at the appropriate time and if we get that time, we will like the GWCL to pay a decent amount out of that which is owed and also a very reliable and acceptable payment agreement that will be a win-win, and then we will definitely understand and restore the power.”

He added that it is not in NEDCo’s best interest to disconnect customers, as the power they have to distribute will often go to waste, which comes back as a loss to them.

“We have always insisted that when we disconnect institutions or individuals, we cannot be repaid because at the end of the day, the power we have paid to produce, we cannot be distributed for money and so it is not in our best interest to disconnect.”

The disconnection has created a looming water shortage in the Northern Regional capital, Tamale, as such a major treatment plant of GWCL is without power to continue production.

NPP’s Akoto Pulls ‘Billboard’ Crowd

0

Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, Supporters of Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto

A New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer aspirant, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, has justified the small throng that accompanied him to file his nomination papers, claiming that he only garnered a dedicated crowd of believers in his bid.

According to him, he is not intimidated by the massive crowds that have characterised the filing of nomination papers by other contestants.

Tens of thousands of NPP supporters and enthusiasts descended on the party’s headquarters in Accra on June 16, 2023 to support Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in filing his candidacy papers.

But Dr. Akoto told the media yesterday after filing his papers that, unlike other contestants who bussed people in, the folks who joined him did so of their own volition, with the majority of them being farmers.

“Let me say here that everybody who has come here, including representatives of farmers, are here on their own accord. You cannot see any bused crowd or any big commercial vehicle bringing people to come and support.

“People have come on their own volition and conviction that my candidature will be good for the people of Ghana and the NPP, and I am very grateful,” he insisted.

Despite the fact that a few people were spotted following him, Dr. Akoto claimed he was accompanied by 22 Greater Accra Region Constituency Chairmen, including his Campaign Chairman, Alfred Boye, a former Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the party.

Others are his Co-Campaign Chairman, Ken-Wood Nuworsu, who is also a former Volta Regional Chairman of the party; National Campaign Coordinator, Peter Oteng Darko; as well as Electoral Area Coordinators, Polling Station Executives, farmers, friends, and loved ones.

“My forms were received by the Director for Finance and Administration, Williams Yamoah, and the Director of Election, Evans Nimako,” he revealed.

He said the national executives of the party, after reviewing the forms, cleared him for meeting all the requirements.

“I assured Ghanaians that I have laid a solid foundation at Ghana’s agriculture sector that is capable of changing the country’s economic fortunes and that I am the best candidate for the party’s flagbearer position,” he intimated.

He expressed appreciation for the support he had received from some delegates, particularly constituency chairmen, and urged them to remain committed to the cause of electing him as the NPP’s flagbearer.

Dr. Akoto, an agricultural economist, who is banking his hopes on farmers to become President, appears to have more billboards and posters across the country than any of the aspirants.

The handful of supporters who followed him for the filing of candidacy papers were spotted holding placards with messages emphasising his abilities and the importance of using agriculture to preserve the country.

For Dr. Afriyie Akoto, the NPP needs to be united to stand a chance of ‘breaking the eight’, asserting, “You cannot break the 8 with half an egg.”

“It has to be the full egg and everybody in this party is important in this respect, especially the delegates who have been given the constitutional powers to choose a flagbearer of this party,” he added.

“I hope that at the end of the day, we will be given the opportunity for delegates to listen to us and make the right choice so that this party can retain power come 2024,” he noted.

Boakye Agyarko

Besides Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, former Energy Minister, Boakye Agyarko also filed his nomination forms to contest in the NPP’s presidential poll.

He called on the party to take action against flagbearer aspirants who violate election rules, highlighting the significance of adhering to the rules and regulations for a fair and transparent electoral process.

“It is important that all (aspirants) uphold the rules and regulations. Without sounding like a fly in the jar, there have been many provocations, there have been many breaking the rules for which no sanctions have been applied. I have even raised the matter at the national council,” he stated.

Mr. Agyarko said, “So long as the rules are clear, so long as there is total fairness, so long as we are all tempered or measured, I believe that we would have a very peaceful contest. But please do not hold yourself aloof from the entire process.”

Konadu Apraku

Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku, another aspirant, also managed to file his nomination papers after being instructed previously by the party’s elections committee to revise his forms because they were missing needed information.

He had turned in his papers without including key documents, such as his CV and list of personal contributions to the party.

Reckless behaviour of rating agencies exacerbated difficulties in Ghana – Akufo-Addo

0

President Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has described the downgrade of Ghana by credit rating agencies as reckless.

He further indicated that relying on borrowing for development in African countries comes with challenges.

He said it is risky and costly.

To that end, he is calling for the strengthening of African financial institutions and their ownership in order to provide financial support to African countries at a low cost.

President Akufo-Addo said these when he was speaking at the 30th Afreximbank Annual Meeting that started on Sunday in Accra, June 18. with the theme “Delivering The Vision, Building Prosperity For Africans.”

The meeting is expected to end on  June 21, 2023.

He said “The reality is that unless we have strong financial institutions we are not going to develop. As we have learned over the past decades, relying on foreign capital is both risky and costly.

“It has resulted in huge financial leakages through the high cost of defaulting in borrowing and interest rate payments and undermines the growth of our financial institutions, domestic resource mobilization, and private sector development through the cost of funds.

“The ownership of our financial institutions should be strengthened over time to enhance continuous development and relevance.

“Two interventions are important to strengthen the developmental impact of the financial wherewithal of our development financial institutions. They are capital and effective coordination with the African Union.

“Regarding the first set of interventions capital, I want to reiterate that despite consistent efforts made by many African governments including during extremely difficult macroeconomic and global operating environments, our development financial institutions remain highly undercapitalized.”

I was a taxi driver, cleaner abroad – Bawumia

0

Vice President Dr Mahamadu Bawumia has shared the challenging experiences he faced during his upbringing and university years.

As he submitted his forms to confirm his intention to contest for the NPP presidential primary, Dr Bawumia expressed gratitude for the difficult path that has led him to this stage.

During his university days at the prestigious University of Oxford, Dr Bawumia revealed that he was only able to pay for one term of school fees. To make ends meet, he resorted to cleaning dormitories and even worked as a taxi driver. Despite these hardships, he persevered and ultimately completed his studies.

“It has not been an easy journey. It has taken a lot of hard work, discipline, and patience to get here. I have walked to school growing up in Moshie Zongo in Tamale. I have been a day worker on farms during holidays in secondary school, a warehouse boy even after finishing university, and a minicab driver. I was only able to pay fees for one term during my studies at Oxford University and had to survive for the rest of my studies without paying fees, thanks to my College. I only settled my fees in arrears after I started work following the completion of my PhD in Canada. I have also been a cleaner of dormitories in my university days in Canada,” Dr. Bawumia recalled.

His challenging background has given him a deep understanding of the struggles faced by many people in Ghana.
Dr. Bawumia emphasized his commitment to caring for the disadvantaged and marginalized members of society.

“I care about the poor, the vulnerable, and the excluded. I care about the Lepers, the sick, sickle cell sufferers, cancer patients, the disabled, Kayayei, street children, and the unemployed among others. This is the true essence of life – to address the problems of the weakest among us and to help them lift themselves up,” he stated.

Dr. Bawumia also noted his firm belief in the power of hard work and the benefits it brings.
He highlighted his dedication and honesty in previous roles, including his position as Deputy Governor at the Bank of Ghana and his current role as Vice President.

“I am not afraid of hard work. In fact, I enjoy hard work. My experience in life tells me that honesty and hard work pay off. I worked hard for H.E. President Kufuor as Deputy Governor at the Bank of Ghana, and I have worked hard as Vice President in assisting President Nana Akufo-Addo in achieving his vision. Together, we have started the process of transforming Ghana into a country ready for the fourth Industrial Revolution. I brought honesty, hard work, dedication, and discipline to my role as Vice President,” Dr. Bawumia declared.

With his personal history and dedication to serving the needs of the Ghanaian people, Dr. Bawumia’s bid for the NPP presidential primaries has garnered significant attention.
As the country looks towards the future, many will be watching closely as the race unfolds.

Poor salaries of contract staff in the banks lead to fraudulent acts – Fraud Prevention Consultant

0

Richard Kumadoe

Fraud Prevention and Security Consultant, Richard Kumadoe has pointed out that banks in Ghana do not pay their contract staff well hence the increasing incidents of fraud.

His comment was on the back of the case of Martha Amakye, a contract staff of Stanbic Bank Ghana who was found guilty and handed an 8-year jailed sentence by an Accra High Court for stealing GHc 1,800,000 and engaging in fraudulent transactions.

“They don’t pay them properly, the contract between them and the contract staff does not normally go well, nobody pays close attention to the contract staff and depending on the flexibility and authority they give them that gives them access to many of these accounts” he mentioned to Johnnie Hughes on 3FM Sunrise Morning Show.

Mr. Kumadoe further explained that because of the pressure at work, banks don’t do “call overs” and it allows the perpetrators of fraud in the bank to create isolation and once they have isolation, it enables fraud to spread in the financial sector as quickly as bush fire.

“When you look at it you could see elements of isolation there, you could see elements of negligence from not doing the call over properly, then you could also see the maltreatment of the contract staff” he observed.

The Fraud Prevention and Security Consultant added that the contract workers who work within the financial sector are also human beings and they see the lifestyle and conditions of the permanent staff. But they don’t get it like that so if you don’t keep a close eye on them and ensure that the contract between them and the agency is properly done, fraud is what you are leading them to.

He explained that the subject in question was a contract staff and the accounts she targeted are dormant accounts with heavy money and that has always been a red flag for many of the banks and for the frontline staff office.

Richard Kumadoe again emphasized that banks owe a duty of care to educate their customers and also swiftly as possible communicate to their stakeholders when issues of fraud occur.

“I was not surprised it is a contract staff and I was not surprised of the account she decided to pick at, which goes to the fault that we need to do more in terms of training, and we need to educate both customers of the banks and those who work for it” he admonished.

Krobea Asante Institute teachers demand compensation for vandalised vehicles

0

Teachers who had their vehicles and other properties vandalized during a protest by students of the Krobea Asante Technical and Vocational Institute in January are demanding compensation.

The students went on a rampage and destroyed public and private property, including the vehicles of some teachers.

The Ashanti Regional Security Council and the TVET Services subsequently closed down the school after police picked up over 40 students in connection with the disturbances.

A five-member committee was tasked to investigate the matter and each student was levied an amount of GH¢430 to cater for the damage caused as part of the recommendations.

The majority of the students paid the amount but the properties which were destroyed are yet to be repaired.

The teachers affected by the incident have therefore petitioned the TVET Services and copied the school’s PTA.

The PTA Chairman of the Krobea Asante Technical and Vocational Institute, Mawunyo Kwansikuma Cudjoe, explained that the affected teachers are unhappy about the development.

“When we come around, we saw that the teachers need their cars. One of them who is a woman is inundated with the damage to her vehicle. She said she contracted a Pragya to be taking her children to school. They had to leave the children on the hill because of how our road is. So we are appealing to TVET and whoever has been named in the report to help speed up things.”

Tinubu’s Rush To Sign Student Loan Is A Concern To Me – Daniel Bwala

0

The Former Spokesman of the Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Council for the 2023 Presidential Election, Daniel Bwala, has stated that Bola Tinubu’s rush to sign bills into law is a concern to him because of the unresolved issues which he did not resolve.

According to Daniel Bwala, Bola Tinubu’s rush to sign the student loan into law is a concern to him because the cushioning effects or the platform the laws will work has not been made available.

For example, Daniel Bwala expressed some doubt that the student loan will work because he does not know the banker that will agree to work with the federal government and give students loans that attracts no interests.

Daniel Bwala went on to say that the debt Nigeria has accumulated over the years means that the federal government does but have money to spend and as such, the federal government cannot find the student loan without recovering stolen public funds or through expanding the tax net in other to get more revenue.

Daniel Bwala narrated that expansion of tax net and recovering of stolen money are two things that will take a lot of time to get done and as such, the two processes cannot benefit the student loan immediately.

Daniel Bwala went on to say that Bola Tinubu rushed and agreed to subsidy removal and signed student loan without coming out with clear ways the effects could be manged in other not to affect the people.

Daniel Bwala concluded by saying that because of Bola Tinubu’s needed to attract attention and accolades from people, Nigerians will see more actions before the solutions are identified.

Bawumia’s aide reacts to Bugri Naabu’s ‘tribal’ comments

0

Dr Gideon Boako, aide to Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has dismissed an assertion made by former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Daniel Bugri Naabu about the upcoming flagbearer race.

Mr Naabu, who is now a paramount chief of Namog Traditional area in the Northern region over the weekend said that a rejection of Dr Bawumia in the race will reinforce the perception that northerners in the party are only suitable for playing second fiddle.

He emphasised that if the NPP doesn’t vote for the Vice President, it will mean they hate northerners.

But speaking on Accra-based Okay FM, Dr Boako indicated all the NPP and Ghana need is the best person to lead and move the economy forward.

The tribe of the candidate, therefore, does not matter as his capabilities.

“Personally, I don’t agree with him on that. It doesn’t matter where the person is coming from. It is a political party and at the end of the day we want the best so if the party agrees that this person should lead us, where the person is coming from is immaterial,” he said.

NPP govt trying to influence court in Gyakye Quayson case

0

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has assured its unwavering support for James Gyakye Quayson in his ongoing criminal trial and the upcoming Assin North by-election.

The NDC insists that Mr. Quayson is innocent and has broken no law, and that he is a victim of injustice perpetrated against him by the government.

Speaking to Citi News, Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, Mustapha Gbande, said that members of the party will be in court in large numbers to show their solidarity with Mr. Quayson.

Mr. Gbande said that while it is widely believed that the government is trying to influence the court in the criminal case against Mr. Quayson, the NDC and the people of Assin North are solidly behind him.

“People believe that government machinery is trying to influence the court to do injustice to Gyakye Quayson, but we don’t believe that he has done any criminality, or he has committed any crime. His lovers are going to be campaigning in his absence and then also see him through the court case. So you cannot pretend to feel what he is feeling, he is not in it alone, he is in it with the party and the party is solidly behind him and Ghanaians are solidly behind him and the people of Assin North are solidly behind him.”

The NDC’s parliamentary candidate for Assin North is expected in court on June 20 to face charges of deceiving a public official and perjury.

His lawyers had attempted to have the trial postponed until after the by-election, but this was unsuccessful.

His lawyers also requested that the proceedings be stayed as the accused is a candidate in the by-election scheduled for June 27, but this was denied.

The court has instead set June 20 for the state to continue with the testimony of its witnesses.

Meanwhile, Mr. Quayson’s counsel has applied to the High Court to review its order that he must appear in court every day for the hearing of his trial.

Reckless behaviour of rating agencies worsened Ghana’s economic woes

0

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said that consistent downgrades of Ghana’s economy by credit rating agencies have contributed to the country’s current economic woes.

Akufo-Addo said that such “reckless downgrades” are not in the best interests of developing countries like Ghana.

Speaking at the 30th-anniversary celebration of the African Export-Import Bank in Accra, Akufo-Addo said that such ratings put undue pressure on African economies.

Stressing the impacts of the ratings, president Akufo-Addo said being “the AU champion for African financial institutions and leader of a country that recently had to deal with one of the most difficult periods in his post-independent history, difficulties that were exacerbated by the reckless behaviour of rating agencies that engaged in pro-cyclical downgrades that shut Ghana out of the capital market and turned a liquidity crisis into a solvency crisis.”

Akufo-Addo also highlighted the risks and costs associated with African nations relying on foreign capital markets.

In his keynote address, the president said that it is important for Africans to build their own indigenous financial institutions in order to achieve economic growth through domestic resource mobilization and private sector development.

He explained the drawbacks of depending on foreign capital, citing financial leakages, high borrowing rates, and interest payments as key issues.

According to him, such reliance undermines the growth of domestic financial institutions and hampers the development of African economies.

He ended his speech by proposing some interventions that African leaders should embrace to overcome the current economic challenges.

He emphasized the importance of capitalization and effective coordination with the African Union.

“Unless we have strong financial institutions, we are not going to develop. We have learnt over the decades that relying on foreign capital is both risky and costly. It has resulted in huge financial leakages to a high cost of default-driven borrowing rates and interest payments and undermines the growth of our financial institution’s domestic resource mobilization and private sector development.”

Man who set fire to rival jumping castle businesses will spend 11 years in jail

0

The competitive world of business can be a cut-throat endeavour, but one Australian man took it a notch too far when he literally burned down his competition to become the best in the game.

Former jumping castle business owner James Balcombe, who owned Awesome Party Hire, was the only one left standing, and therefore ranked number one on Google, according to an article published in ‘The Guardian’.

The 58-year-old was sentenced to 11 years in prison. He has already served two years and five months.

Balcombe’s scheme was recently untangled in a Victoria court, which heard that he hired another man, Craig Anderson, to set fire to his own factory because he was afraid the authorities would be suspicious if his company had not been targeted.

When Anderson was taken into custody, he sang like a bird and pointed to Balcombe as being the one responsible for the attacks on the competing companies. According to testimony given in court, he hurled a molotov cocktail through a company’s broken window, setting off a massive fire that consumed the building and destroyed 110 jumping castles.

Damage from the fire totalled $1.4 million (R25.5m) and Anderson subsequently received an eight-and-a-half-year jail term.

The article reported that Judge Stewart Bayles said the damage to the other companies went beyond just destroying the businesses.

‘’It impacted the lives and livelihoods of others, and caused significant loss, suffering and emotional trauma.“

Importers and Exporters Association bemoans high port taxes

0

The Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana has expressed disappointment at the government for failing to address the excessive taxes charged at the ports.

This, according to the Association, is believed to have resulted in Ghana losing a significant portion of its cargo traffic to Lomé.

The Association also believes that the government has not treated players within the ports industry fairly, even after making several promises in the run-up to the 2016 elections to deal with excessive taxes at the ports.

In an interview with Citi News, the Executive Secretary of the Association, Sampson Asaki Awingobit, noted that they will collaborate with their sister associations to deepen their demands.

“They kept on compounding us with taxes, tariffs, and charges, and that led to a total sharp deduction. We have lost huge cargoes to Ivory Coast and Lomé, and that is true.

“We will collaborate with other organizations to ensure that the government does something about it.”

Assault on referee ‘barbaric and inhumane’

0

Head of Referees at the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Alex Kotei, has described as “barbaric and inhumane” the assault of a female referee by Napari Suheru, a coach during a Division 1B football match near the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium in Tamale last Saturday.

He was speaking on the incident in an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM in Accra on Monday.

“I describe the act as barbaric and inhumane. We hear of such incidents in the men’s games and not the women, so this comes to us as a surprise. We will look into it,” he stated.

Mr Kotei emphasised that it was important for people not to intervene in the matter and allow the law to take its course.

“It will be good if some jail sentence is brought to pass. People should not intervene. That is the only way we can bring some sanity in our games. If people intervene like chiefs, then we cannot seek justice. If he is jailed for some months or years then there will be sanity in our games,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the police have arrested Mr Suheru, the football coach, who assaulted the referee during the Division 1B football match near the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium last Saturday.

Following the attack, the injured referee was promptly taken to hospital for medical treatment.

The suspect is currently in police custody and will be brought before the court to face justice for his actions.

In the ongoing investigation by the police, Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare, has held discussions with Mr Kurt Okraku, the President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), and Professor Peter Twumasi, the Director-General of the National Sports Authority.

During the meeting, the IGP urged them to inform the police in advance about all football matches in the lower leagues, just as they do for the Premier League.

This proactive notification will allow the police to implement appropriate measures to ensure security, law, and order during these matches.

Change student loan to grant for indigent students – ASUU tells Tinubu

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU has asked President Bola Tinubu to change the new Students Loans Act to an education grant for indigent students.

The ASUU National President, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke stated this on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics.

According to the ASUU President, more than 90% of students won’t meet the “stringent requirements” to access and repay the loan.

Osodeke said, “This would have been better if we are giving it to those set of students who are very poor, it should be called a grant, not a loan,”

“It should be called a grant since it is coming from the Federation Account and not that (after) these people have access it and when they are graduating, they have heavy loads behind them and within two years, if they don’t pay, they go to jail. That’s why we’re talking about collective bargaining, you have views from all the sides.”

Arik Air denies diversion of N120bn

The management of Arik Air Limited (in receivership) has dismissed allegations of misappropriation of funds to the tune of N120 billion.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had reportedly detained the Receiver Manager appointed by the Assets Management Corporation of Nigeria for Arik Air, Mr Kamilu Omokide, over alleged misappropriation and diversion of about N120bn.

Reacting to the development, the airline described the report as false, saying it was “nothing more than well-concocted lies and forms part of a deliberate campaign of calumny against the Receiver Manager.

In the statement, made available to The PUNCH on Sunday, the carrier said the alleged misappropriation of N120 billion was contained in a petition filed by Mr Femi Falana.

The statement was made available by the media consultancy firm to the airline, SY & T Communications Limited.

Bolanle Ninalowo makes shocking revelation about himself, drops a powerful note

In April, Bolanle Ninalowo revealed certain secrets people do not know about him.

On his Instagram page, Ninalowo shared that while some people may view him as selfish, he sees himself as many other things.

The lover boy realized early on that he couldn’t expect to be a priority for many people, so he chose to make himself a priority. He listed several things he did to improve himself but ultimately emphasized his complete reliance on God.

He wrote: Rather, I am SELF AWARE. I learned quick enough in life that I won’t always be a priority to others, so I became a priority to MYSELF. I learned to RESPECT myself, Take care of Myself and become my own Support system. I gave up on waiting for others to choose me, so I CHOOSE MYSELF. I stay FOCUSED on me and Mind my Business. And if it ain’t Adding up, I Subtract immediately. Most importantly, I rely on GOD alone. Maka”.
