Derisking agriculture critical to lowering lending costs – DBG Chief economist

0

Prof. Eric Osei-Assibey, Economist at the Development Bank Ghana (DBG), has underscored the urgent need to derisk Ghana’s agriculture sector to improve access to affordable credit for agribusinesses.

Speaking at the 2025 Citi Business Forum on Thursday, June 19, under the theme “Harnessing Agribusiness Potential for Economic Growth: Expanding Agricultural Frontiers and Maximising Productivity in Ghana,” Prof. Osei-Assibey pointed to the persistently high risk levels in the sector as a major deterrent for banks and financial institutions.

“Agriculture is still very risky. If you look at the data, the sectoral distribution of NPLs, in 2023, agriculture contributed about 52% to NPLs in Ghana. It has come down in 2024 to about 38, but it is still risky,” he noted.

He explained that due to this elevated risk, banks often apply high-risk premiums when pricing loans to agribusinesses, which results in higher interest rates for farmers and players in the value chain.

“Banks will take the risk premium to price. But how do we derisk the system? For me, that is the most important thing,” he added.

Prof. Osei-Assibey stressed that improving access to credit for the agriculture sector requires a deliberate effort to mitigate risks across the entire value chain from production to distribution.

“If we want to scale up credit to the sector, we have to begin to talk about derisking the sector. Because if the risk is low, pricing will be low to a large extent. But if the risk is high, they will price that in, and so the interest rate will go high,” he explained.

Koforidua, June 19, GNA – The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints has donated a set of critical medical equipment to the Koforidua Polyclinic to improve healthcare service delivery.

Mr. Charles Agyapong, Communications Director of the Koforidua Ghana-Stake of the Church, listed the donated items, which included an anesthetic machine with ventilator, theatre automatic bed, autoclave, cesarean section set, hysterectomy instrument set, and movable theatre lights, all intended to support the hospital’s Theater Unit.

In addition, the donation encompassed equipment for the Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Unit such as a 2.5 HP air conditioner, slit lamp, tonometer, and syringing machine.

The maternity ward received a resuscitation table with warmer and phototherapy unit, while other items included a blood bank fridge, patient monitors, and a dental chair.

Receiving the equipment on behalf of the Polyclinic, Dr. Kwame Ofori-Koramoah, Medical Superintendent of the facility, expressed his gratitude, noting that the equipment would significantly improve service delivery across the Theatre, Dental, and ENT units.

“The donation has exceeded our expectations and will go a long way in enhancing our capacity to serve the community better,” he stated.

Dr. Ofori-Koramoah also appealed to other organizations, including NGOs, and individuals to support the Polyclinic in renovating the laboratory, completing a new clinical block, constructing a warehouse, and providing a vehicle to improve administrative efficiency and emergency response.

In recognition of the gesture, the Medical Superintendent presented citations of appreciation to Elder Creg Ostler and Sister Sondra Ostler, the Humanitarian Missionaries of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Africa West Area, and the entire church community.

Elder Ostler, who facilitated the delivery of the equipment, emphasized the church’s humanitarian focus, saying; “As missionaries, our role is to identify where help is most needed and provide solutions, especially for women, children, the elderly, and the sick.”

He further highlighted the opportunity to respond to the hospital’s request for medical supplies, describing it as a meaningful fulfillment of their humanitarian mission.

President Desmond Osei Anom of the Koforidua Ghana-Stake explained that the donation was funded through the church’s Fast Offering account, a practice where members forego two consecutive meals weekly and contribute the equivalent in cash or in-kind to support humanitarian projects.

“This initiative reflects our commitment to community service and compassion,” he stated.

President Anom assured that the church would supervise the maintenance of the equipment for at least one year, expressing confidence that the Polyclinic would sustain their functionality well beyond that period.

Dr. Samuel Borlabi, Deputy Director of Clinical Care at the Eastern Regional Health Directorate, commended the church’s ongoing support, describing the gesture as a demonstration of goodwill and a testament to their dedication to community development.

The ceremony was attended by various stakeholders, including health officials and representatives of the church.

The 2024 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party and former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed gratitude to the 60 Members of Parliament who visited his office on Thursday, June 19, 2025, to reaffirm their support for his bid to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.

Addressing the press after the meeting, he described the gathering as a show of solidarity and commitment from the MPs.

“I’m very happy with the group of MPs who have declared their support for me. I now have the backing of 60 Members of Parliament, and considering there are 88 NPP MPs, that tells you a very significant number have endorsed me,” he noted.

Dr Bawumia acknowledged the endorsement and emphasised the need for continued work to improve his chances across their respective constituencies in his bid to become the NPP’s 2028 presidential candidate.

“Members of Parliament largely control the constituencies, and I am very grateful for what they have done today,” he added.

60 NPP MPs back Bawumia’s flagbearer bid voluntarily – Ampratwum-Sarpong

0

Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, leader of the group of New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs supporting Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s presidential bid, says all 60 MPs backing the former Vice President have done so of their own accord.

Speaking to Citi News after a meeting with Dr. Bawumia, Ampratwum-Sarpong, who is also the Member of Parliament for Mampong, said that efforts are ongoing to persuade other MPs who have yet to publicly declare their support.

“The processes are about to commence to select our leadership in the party, and one of the key ones is the flagbearership, and that is where the focus is. Our MPs — the number being 88 — are the political front of the party when we are in opposition. So that responsibility has just come upon us, and we have to take the mantle and do what is right.”

He stressed that the MPs were not coerced into supporting Dr. Bawumia, noting that each member made their decision independently.

“…MPs on their volition have made their own decisions and decided to align with A, B, C, and in Parliament as at today, 60 of the 88 have indicated and declared that they want to side with their colleagues to champion the cause of Dr. Bawumia to win the flagbearership and to lead the party into the elections in 2028. So it is a voluntary thing, nobody was pressured.”

Meanwhile, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia expressed appreciation to the MPs for their show of support.

“It was a very happy visit, it was a courtesy call and it was a call to declare support for me, and I am so happy. In terms of the group that have declared support for me from Parliament, it now amounts to just over 60 MPs — and you know we have 88 MPs — and so that tells you that a very significant number of MPs have declared their support for me.

“I just want to use this opportunity to thank all of them… I believe this is going to be very important… I am very happy for what they have done today.”

Language wouldn’t have been a barrier – WAEC defends use of King Paluta’s Aseda in BECE

0

WAEC defends use of Aseda in 2025 BECE WAEC defends use of Aseda in 2025 BECE

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has explained why King Paluta’s hit song Aseda was used in the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

WAEC’s explanation comes after some members of the public criticised the exam body for including the song in Section B of the Music and Creative Arts paper.

In Question 4(c), students were asked to identify two major social issues addressed in the song Aseda.

“King Paluta, whose real name is Thomas Adjei Wireko, is a Ghanaian musician known for combining traditional rhythms, storytelling and modern hip-hop beats in his music. One of his most popular songs, Aseda, carries deep messages that address important issues in the Ghanaian society. Identify two of these issues?” the question read.

However, in an interview with 3FM on June 18, 2025, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, explained the reasoning behind the question.

He said that the students had been well-prepared ahead of time to answer such questions and that the use of a local language like Twi should not be seen as a barrier.

Some people had raised concerns that since the song is in Twi, not all students might be able to understand it. But Kapi stressed that teachers would have worked with the students to help them understand the meaning behind the song.

“Language wouldn’t have been a barrier because teachers would have guided the students through it. In fact, the materials are provided to them ahead of time, giving them the opportunity to interpret and understand the content properly before the exam,” Kapi said.

He further explained that using songs in exams is part of the Creative Arts and Music syllabus. According to him, just like students study poems or comprehension in English literature, music is also used as a tool to pass on messages, and students are expected to reflect on what they learn from such songs.

“The issue about this, especially this aspect of the syllabus, is to have the candidates studied more like you study poetry or comprehension. The music is supposed to send a message or to bring something to the society. And so it is something that the candidates are supposed to have studied and then they should be able to, you know, put it in their own words and maybe tell the world what they have learned from this kind of music,” he stated.

EC faces Parliament over ballot printing issues, withheld Ablekuma North results

Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa play videoChairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa

Officials of the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) have been summoned by Parliament to answer questions on the 2024 general elections on Thursday, June 19, 2025.

The EC officials are expected to address two key concerns submitted by Rockson-Nelson Etse Kwami Dafeamekpor, Member of Parliament for South Dayi and Majority Chief Whip of the House.

The first question seeks to determine whether the Electoral Commission has awarded any contracts for the printing and supply of ballot papers for the 2024 General Elections.

This inquiry aims to assess the transparency of procurement processes and ensure the integrity of electoral logistics.

The second question relates to the delayed declaration of the Ablekuma North parliamentary results, which have remained officially unannounced since the polls held on December 7, 2025.

Dafeamekpor is demanding answers from the EC Chairperson regarding the cause of the prolonged delay and why the results have not yet been made public.

Mbappé hospitalised over acute gastroenteritis

Kylian Mbappe is a Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe is a Real Madrid forward

Real Madrid forward, Kylian Mbappe, has been hospitalised for an acute case of gastroenteritis, the Spanish club said Thursday.

According to L’Équipe, Xabi Alonso previously reported that Mbappé had been kept in complete isolation in his hotel room to avoid infecting other team members.

Gastroenteritis is an inflammatory disease of the stomach and small intestine caused by infections and bacteria such as E. coli and others.

Real Madrid released an official statement, on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, confirming the hospitalisation.

“Our player Kylian Mbappé is experiencing an acute case of gastroenteritis and have been hospitalised to undergo medical tests and receive appropriate treatment,” the statement said.

This development follows his absence from both training and the matchday squad, with the club initially attributing it to a fever.

Mbappé did not play in Madrid’s 1-1 tie against Al Hilal on June 18 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, due to a feverish condition reported the day before.

At the time, the decision to sideline him was framed as a precaution, and Gonzalo García, a youth team standout, started in his place.

Currently, there is no information about the player’s condition, and the timeline for his recovery remains unknown, which is a major concern for both fans and the Real Madrid coaching staff.

The club has made it clear that his full recovery is the priority, and no decisions regarding his return to play will be made until his health improves significantly.

His status for the remaining group stage matches is currently in doubt.

Sammi Awuku calls for urgent reforms to support deaf students in Ghana

0

Akuapem North Member of Parliament (MP), Samuel Awuku, has called for urgent and targeted action to address the pressing challenges facing students at the Akropong School for the Deaf in Mampong, Eastern Region.

His advocacy follows an engagement between students and Members of Parliament (MPs), organised by the Department of Public Engagement with support from Mr. Awuku.

The session featured presentations from several MPs including Fred Agbenyo (Guan), Edem Agbana (Ketu North), Kojo Oppong Nkrumah (Ofoase-Ayirebi), Shirley Kyei (Atwima Nwabiagya South), and Wallace Pele (Afram Plains North).

Briefing Parliament on the outcome, Mr. Awuku described the event as a step towards inclusive dialogue and participatory democracy.

He highlighted major concerns, including the absence of a legislative framework for deaf education, poor infrastructure, and the need for a curriculum tailored to the needs of hearing-impaired learners. He also raised alarm over student safety due to the school’s split-campus layout, which forces them to cross busy roads daily.

“The only Senior High Technical School for the Deaf in the country operates without any legal framework to secure its future through guaranteed funding, policy direction, or institutional support. This leaves the school vulnerable to inconsistent funding, administrative neglect, and limited infrastructure,” Mr. Awuku told Parliament.

He stressed that the students are not asking for sympathy, but for fairness and equal opportunities.

To that end, Mr. Awuku proposed that Parliament refer the matter to relevant committees, including Education, Gender, Children and Social Protection, and Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, to consider a bill that would ensure dedicated funding, qualified staff, and improved infrastructure for special needs institutions.

He also supported calls for Ghanaian Sign Language to be formally recognised nationwide, advocating for reforms that guarantee the presence of interpreters in courts and police stations to ensure access to justice for the hearing impaired.

Mr. Awuku underscored that such legislation would go beyond supporting a single school, representing instead a national commitment to inclusivity, equity, and sustainable development.

“This aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 on Quality Education, particularly Target 4.5, which aims to eliminate disparities and ensure equal access to all levels of education and vocational training for persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups,” he noted.

The former Director-General of the National Lottery Authority expressed confidence that with the backing of Parliament, sustainable and lasting solutions can be implemented to uplift marginalised communities across Ghana.

‘Samini knows my heart’ – Stonebwoy clears up ‘beef’ rumours

0

Award-winning dancehall artiste Stonebwoy has addressed rumours of a ‘beef’ between him and Samini.

He acknowledged that they may have had issues at some point, but emphasised that nothing will ever end their relationship, no matter what happens.

He told George Quaye in an interview on PrimeTime’s premiere episode that he believes the end justifies the means, and therefore, past conflicts don’t justify the end of their bond.

“It’s not always a smooth road, but the end justifies the means. That’s one of the slogans I’ve always lived by. The way we end something justifies our mentality through the process the whole time. So you realise that we’re not ending. Our relationship may have bent, but it tells you that it’s supposed to be; it’s all love. Samini knows my heart, and he knows I’m his soldier.

Moving forward, he (Stonebwoy) doesn’t anticipate any further conflicts, as they have settled their differences after he visited Samini’s house to apologise.

He also hinted at his appearance on Samini’s upcoming album titled ‘Originator’, as well as other projects they are working on together.

“The album that’s coming, there’s a divine story behind the whole situation in terms of how I would eventually come on the album. We thank God for that, and we know that song is going to do amazing stuff, and I believe that there’s a lot in the pipeline that we’re supposed to do because people have not seen Samini and me live in action.”

The BHIM Nation king urged his fans and the High Grade Family to come together and promote both brands with peace and love.

Alhaji Yusif Sulemana is the Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources Alhaji Yusif Sulemana is the Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources

The Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Alhaji Yusif Sulemana, has announced a major shift to digitise Ghana’s land records to improve land administration and boost investor confidence.

Speaking at Africa Real Estate Conference and Expo in Accra on Thursday, June 19, 2025, Sulemana outlined the government’ efforts in modernising Ghana’s land management system.

“We are undertaking a comprehensive national land records digitisation effort. This initiative includes scanning millions of historic documents, mapping land parcels using satellite imagery and drones, and establishing a centralised digital database of land ownership,” he stated.

He added that Ghana’s current manual system is time-consuming and inefficient, adding that the government’s digitisation project would provide a unified and accurate source of information on land ownership.

“Today, when you go to the Lands Commission to retrieve your records, it can take several hours. Our aim is to convert all those hard copies into a digital system that significantly shortens turnaround times for document searches,” he noted.

He further noted that the ministry is rolling out a National Land Information System (NLIS), a digital platform to transform land transactions in Ghana.

“This initiative is a game-changer. it will not only bring efficiency and transparency to land administration but also foster investor confidence and unlock the full potential of Ghana’s land resources,” he explained.

The government’s digitisation project aligns with Ghana’s broader digital transformation agenda and is expected to greatly enhance land governance and service delivery in the coming years.

Renowned Ghanaian filmmaker and writer Shirley Frimpong Manso has expressed concern over the unwillingness of young Ghanaians to embrace mentorship and genuinely commit to learning within the film industry.

Speaking in an interview with Doreen Avio on Hitz FM on June 18, 2025, Shirley emphasised that while she is open and eager to mentor the next generation, many aspiring creatives may not be prepared to put in the necessary work.

“I think the opportunities all around us and if the young and upcoming, those coming from school, those wanting mentorship you know wanting to learn and stuff. it’s all around us as long as you’re not just looking to come in three weeks and decide that she wants to come and take your job, she wants to be a super star and before you know it they’re posting this and stuff like that and if you really want to learn, I’ve helped couple of people” she said.

She continued, “One of the guys that I work with, he came from the School of Performing Arts. I met him at Afrif. This would be about 10 years ago. He came to me and he said, I’m such an admirer of your work and stuff like that, from School of Performing Arts, this and this is what I do. I have a tracking of our conversation. And I said, come to my office. He came around the office. I think for several weeks I wasn’t even in but he’s stuck by it. I worked with him for 10 years. He has been my co-writer on a lot of the stuff that we’ve done. This is a young guy I didn’t know him from anywhere”.

Shirley shared a powerful example of mentorship in action, recounting the story of a young man she met at the Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) nearly a decade ago.

“Somebody like Jocelyn, I brought her on as an actor. I’m actually mentoring her on producing. I’ve even told her that if she wanted to direct and stuff like that. There’s so many people I’ve said, come on set, just come and sit there” she stated.

She added, “You want to learn how to direct, you want to learn how to produce and stuff. When it even comes to people who have done costuming on my set, these are people that we’ve taken from nowhere that we’ve actually moulded. I am all about support. I’m all about mentoring. But are people ready to learn? Be able to put their head in there and actually do the job? That’s where the problem is”.

NPP prioritises ‘power’ over Ghanaians

Dr Edward Omane Boamah slams NPP for prioritising political power over the welfare of Ghanaians Dr Edward Omane Boamah slams NPP for prioritising political power over the welfare of Ghanaians

The Minister of Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, has criticised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for a perceived prioritisation of political power over the welfare of Ghanaians.

According to him, the NPP’s main focus has been to secure power instead of serving the interests of the Ghanaian people.

In a citinewsroom.com report on June 18, 2025, Dr Omane Boamah suggested that the NPP has strayed from its original promise to serve citizens.

“The Competent Economic Management Team did enough damage to pensioners, people with disabilities, women, the youth, and Ghanaians in general in six short months. Instead of sincerely apologising for their misdeeds, they are focusing on the next elections,” he added.

Dr Omane Boamah stated that the party appears more concerned with securing power, raising questions about the NPP’s commitment to the well-being of Ghanaians.

He slammed the party for scheduling its presidential primaries earlier than usual in preparation for the 2028 general elections.

This decision was made during a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Accra on June 17.

He noted that the NPP has shown no remorse for the economic and social hardships Ghanaians endured under its administration.

He accused the NPP of prioritising its self-interest over national progress, stating, “The NPP thinks only of themselves and the next elections.”

He suggested that the NDC remains the better “the Alternative…” which, in his estimation, promotes people-centered governance.

Reacting to Dr Omane Boamah’s utterances, Haruna Mohammed, the Deputy General Secretary of the NPP, sought to justify the decision to hold early primaries.

He said that it will allow the party’s eventual candidate enough time to engage with key constituencies and build momentum for the upcoming 2028 elections.

In an interview with Channel One Newsroom on June 18, 2025, Haruna stated that the new date for the primaries, January 31, 2026, aligns with recommendations from the party’s constitutional review process.

“It is going to market the candidate enough with regards to us being able to get in contact with the international community, the business community, and the various stakeholders across the length and breadth of the world,” he explained.

Haruna added that the early primaries are intended to help the party shift its focus from internal matters to national mobilisation, which is especially crucial given the NPP’s current minority status in Parliament.

Mastercard and Access Bank introduce innovative card to empower Ghanaians

0

This unique offering is designed to empower Ghanaians aged 13 to 40 with essential financial tools This unique offering is designed to empower Ghanaians aged 13 to 40 with essential financial tools

In a bold move to help empower the next generation with early access to financial tools and knowledge, Mastercard and Access Bank (Ghana) PLC have launched an innovative, age-segmented card under the Bank’s youth banking proposition, AccessU.

This unique offering is designed to empower Ghanaians aged 13 to 40 with essential financial solutions that align with different life stages and evolving aspirations.

This new proposition is structured into three key life stages: teens, young professionals, and middle-established professionals —with each stage offering tailored features that meet the evolving financial needs of Ghanaians.

For teens, the offering includes a prepaid or reloadable debit card with parental controls, expense-tracking tools, and scheduled allowances, aimed at teaching budgeting, saving, and financial responsibility. In addition, the card offers discounts on gaming, streaming services, and educational platforms. As users transition to young professionals, the card evolves to include a debit card paired with an entry-level credit card, using soft credit scoring to help first-time borrowers establish credit.

This stage also introduces Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) integrations for e-commerce, travel, and gadgets, along with exclusive rewards on subscriptions such as Netflix and Spotify. The offering further supports wealth-building with investment-backed cashback cards.

For middle-established professionals, the product expands to premium debit and credit cards that offer travel, lifestyle, career advancement and health insurance benefits, as well as business and SME-linked corporate cards for entrepreneurs and executives.

This initiative is part of Access Bank and Mastercard’s broader agenda to close Ghana’s financial inclusion gap. Ghana has a young age structure, with approximately 57% of the population under the age of 25, which emphasizes the importance of initiatives targeting this age group. By providing accessible, customized financial tools at critical life stages, the collaboration aims to cultivate a financially empowered, digitally included generation.

“This launch reflects our shared commitment with Access Bank Ghana to shape a more financially confident and digitally included generation. By embedding financial literacy and secure digital tools from an early age, we are empowering Ghana’s youth to grow into financially responsible adults while also giving families peace of mind and contributing to a more inclusive digital economy,” said Folasade Femi-Lawal, Country Manager and Area Business Head for West Africa at Mastercard.

Pearl Nkrumah, Executive Director, Retail & Digital Banking at Access Bank Ghana, added: “Our youth are not just the future, they are the now. Through our collaboration with Mastercard, we are not just offering banking solutions to young people, but we are enhancing their job market readiness, creating recruitment opportunities, empowering young entrepreneurs, and equipping them to achieve their dreams and impact Ghana and the rest of the world. This is about giving them agency over their financial choices, helping them to thrive, save, spend wisely, and dream bigger.”

As part of the broader collaboration, Mastercard and Access Bank Ghana aim to also design a compelling proposition for women under the Bank’s flagship women banking initiative, the ‘W’ Initiative, further advancing their goal to empower women financially and professionally.

The age-segmented card will be made available across Access Bank’s physical branches and digital network. This Mastercard-Access Bank collaboration presents new opportunities for fintechs, merchants and educational partners to engage Ghanaians in more meaningful and responsible ways.

The initiative also reinforces Access Bank Ghana’s positioning as a future-focused and youth-centric bank while supporting Mastercard’s commitment to advancing financial inclusion across Africa. The launch sets a new benchmark for how financial institutions can support young people and their families in today’s digital-first economy.

FIFA have come up with measures to control hate speech on social media FIFA have come up with measures to control hate speech on social media

As part of its efforts to protect its participants and make football a safe space, FIFA has marked this year’s International Day for Countering Hate Speech.

The football governing body reiterated their commitment against hate in football and disclosing the latest figures of its Social Media Protection Service (SMPS), which is in place at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025™.

An enhanced service is covering the 32 teams participating in the FIFA Club World Cup™, as well as 2,019 accounts belonging to players, coaches and officials.

Since its launch at the FIFA World Cup 2022™ in Qatar, the SMPS has analysed 33 million posts and comments on 15,302 accounts across 23 tournaments, qualifiers and friendlies.

The service – which has been permanently available to all 211 FIFA Member Associations (MA) and their players since 2024 – has hidden over ten million abusive comments from public view, protecting the intended target and their friends, family and followers from potential psychological harm.

Abusive content that is deemed to have broken the platforms’ respective terms of service is reported to social media platforms, triggering concrete actions, including account suspensions and, when the threshold has been met, information is submitted to law enforcement authorities for further action.

Strengthening the link between the football authorities and the respective justice system of each MA is critical to take the fight against online abuse forward.

About the social media protection service

What is the FIFA social media protection service (SMPS)?

The SMPS protects players, teams and officials from online abuse, keeping their social feeds free from hate and allowing them to enjoy taking part in FIFA events.

It also stops their followers being exposed to abusive, discriminatory and threatening posts, preventing the normalisation of these kinds of actions.

Step 1: Monitor participants’ public accounts for abusive, discriminatory and threatening comments and replies.

Step 2: Moderate abusive and offensive comments and replies by instantly and automatically hiding them, where the account owner has provided permission to do so.

Step 3: Report comments and replies directly to social media platforms for further action where they are deemed to have broken the platforms’ respective terms of service.

Submit the relevant information to law enforcement authorities.

‘It’s not about what favours him’ – Bawumia camp downplays claims of advantage in NPP primary

0

Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia

The Director of Communications for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia 2024 campaign,

Dennis Miracles Aboagye has rejected claims that the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) decision to hold its presidential primary on January 31, 2026, was intended to give the former Vice President an unfair advantage.

Speaking on Joy FM on June 18, 2025, Dennis Miracles Aboagye dismissed the suggestions, insisting that Dr Bawumia is prepared for the internal contest regardless of the date selected.

“Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has been through this process multiple times. For him, it’s not a question of what favours or works against him,” myjoyonline.com quoted Aboagye to have said.

“What matters is that the date has been set, the rules will be laid out, and the internal debates can begin.”

He emphasised that Dr Bawumia remains focused on engaging party delegates with his message of forward-thinking leadership and is not concerned about when the primary take place.

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the NPP officially announced Saturday, January 31, 2026, as the date for the presidential primary during a key meeting held on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.

The decision, communicated by the party’s General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua, paves the way for the selection of a new flagbearer to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.

Aboagye defended the NEC’s authority, noting that the party’s constitution grants it the power to set internal election timelines.

“As of now, I’m not aware of any decision that tilts the process in favour of one aspirant over another,” he stated.

“All aspirants, including Dr Bawumia, have an equal number of days to present their case to party delegates.”

He further argued that the focus should be on the vision and leadership qualities of the aspirants, not the date of the primary.

“The goal is not just to lead the NPP into 2028 but to provide bold leadership for Ghana as a whole.”

Ghana to digitise land records to boost investor confidence

Citi Business Forum timely and crucial for Agric growth – Dumelo

0

Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture, John Dumelo, has described the Citi Business Forum as a timely and vital initiative in supporting Ghana’s agricultural and economic transformation.

Speaking at the event in Accra on Thursday, June 19, held under the theme Harnessing Agribusiness for Economic Growth: Expanding Ghana’s Agribusiness Frontiers, Dumelo praised Citi FM and Channel One TV for convening key players from both the public and private sectors to address pressing issues in agriculture and business.

“Citi FM’s timely effort in organising this programme is very crucial because we need everybody on board — both the private and public sectors,” he said.

While commending the initiative, Dumelo urged the organisers to deepen their engagement by directly connecting with individuals who venture into farming as a result of such forums. He recommended that future events include follow-up visits to participants’ farms to encourage practical involvement in agriculture.

“I also want to say that beyond this, when Citi FM is organising such programmes, the next step should be to visit individual farms. So that if all of us here decide to become farmers, Citi FM can follow up and say, ‘You, what are you farming? You, what are you farming?’ — so that we bring the practical part of farming into the conversation,” he added.

Dumelo’s comments reflect a growing call for more action-oriented approaches to agricultural development, linking policy discussions with real-world implementation and community participation.

Dafeamekpor denies restrictions on Minority’s role in Parliament’s Appointment Committee

0

The Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor, has pushed back against claims suggesting the Minority in Parliament is being denied the opportunity to fully participate in the work of Parliament’s Appointments Committee.

Speaking to JoyNews, Mr Dafeamekpor dismissed allegations that the current Minority leadership is not being afforded the same latitude as their predecessors in questioning during committee proceedings.

“So to suggest that the latitude given to former Minority Leaders to ask questions is no longer available to the Minority Leader or Minority members on the committee is absolutely falsehood,” Mr Dafeamekpor stated.

He further asserted that not only has the Minority been granted a fair platform to contribute to deliberations, but they are, in fact, being accused of taking liberties with that allowance.

“In fact, we are being accused of being over-indulgent in terms of the latitude granted to the Minority Leader,” he added.

He will do well in terms of managing the economy – Freddie Blay reaffirms support for Bawumia

0

Former Vice President and 2024 Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia Former Vice President and 2024 Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia

A former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Freddie Blay, has reiterated his unwavering support for the party’s 2024 Flagbearer and former Vice President of Ghana, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, despite the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general elections.

In an exclusive interview with Accra-based Asaasepa Radio on Monday, June 16, 2025, according to dailyguidenetwork.com, Blay acknowledged that the party leadership holds the authority to choose who will lead the NPP into the 2028 Election.

However, he maintained his confidence in Dr Bawumia, stressing that in his view, Bawumia remains the most suitable candidate to lead the party into the next electoral cycle.

Blay further expressed his belief that, if given the mandate, Dr Bawumia would perform exceptionally well, particularly in steering the economy.

He added that he is confident in Bawumia’s ability to diligently manage both economic affairs and overall governance.

“I think Dr Bawumia’s leadership is good. He will do very well, in terms of managing the economy and governance. I think I will put my bet behind him. Bawumia ticket is good. It was good in 2024 and it’s still good today, I still believe in the Bawumia ticket,” he said.

Commenting on the NPP’s loss in the 2024 Election, Freddie Blay noted that the party struggled with internal organisation and that several things didn’t go as planned.

However, he emphasised his continued faith in Dr Bawumia and expressed confidence that the party would regroup and reposition itself effectively to secure victory in the 2028 elections.

“I think we didn’t galvanise our people well and things went haywire, and that is why we didn’t win. I still have faith in him, and I think that if we do our reorganisation very well, this time, it will be easier for us to win,” he stated.

Freddie Blay also stated that Ghana remains a secular state where religious beliefs and affiliations have never influenced the selection of presidential candidates.

He firmly rejected suggestions from some quarters that Dr Bawumia’s religion played a role in the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general elections.

He attributed the loss to a range of factors, including voter apathy, and acknowledged that the party fell short in key areas, arguing that it would have been in the nation’s interest to retain the NPP in power, citing what he described as a stronger performance under President Akufo-Addo’s leadership, as compared to the alternative offered by the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The NDC, he added, in his view, has yet to demonstrate its capability to deliver on its promises.

He, therefore, urged party members to refrain from assigning blame to individuals and instead focus on rebuilding unity and reenergizing the party’s base in preparation for a comeback in the 2028 Election.

“I didn’t see the defeat coming and felt things were going to be bright. We thought Ghanaians would understand the situation due to the work the NPP government did. Nana Addo did well. This is human science and not physical science. Even if you do very well, people could vote against you. Expectations were high.

“The whole party failed and couldn’t carry members along, but these are all post facto factors,” dailyguidenetwork.com quoted him as having said.

Ghana’s climate minister makes strong investment case for African NDCs in Germany

0

At the ongoing 62nd session of the Subsidiary Bodies (SB62) in Bonn, the spotlight turned to Africa as policymakers, development partners and climate finance institutions gathered for a high-level side event titled, “The Investment Case for African Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).”

On this critical platform, the Minister of State for Climate Change and Sustainability of Ghana, Seidu Issifu, delivered a compelling message, stating that “Africa’s NDCs are not just policy documents — they are blueprints for survival, recovery, and prosperity. They demand urgent investment and fair financing.”

Seidu Issifu joined a distinguished panel of leaders, including Commissioner Margaret Wembeza of Uganda, Professor Anthony Nyong of the African Development Bank, Balisi Gopolang, Director of Climate Change from Botswana, and a senior official from the government of Zimbabwe.

Together, they laid bare the financing gaps that hinder Africa’s climate goals and the urgent need for scaled-up international support.

In his address, the minister powerfully underscored the centrality of climate finance to Ghana’s development and resilience.

Presenting Ghana’s updated NDCs, he outlined an ambitious but pragmatic plan anchored in 47 programme actions, 19 policy reforms, and 11 priority sectors, including health, agriculture, water resources, sanitation, oil and gas, gender, energy, and communications.

These efforts are expected to yield 8 key economic outcomes and require an investment range between $9.3 billion and $15.5 billion.

Seidu Issifu did not mince words when he called for “a rethink of the global climate finance architecture,” demanding that “investors view African NDCs as investment-ready platforms that offer high climate returns.”

He highlighted how Ghana has integrated private sector mobilisation, innovative policies, and green investment strategies across sectors to ensure real impact.

Yet, the minister was clear in stating that; “Without sustained international support and debt relief, our ambitions risk becoming rhetorical.”

In a bold and honest plea, he drew attention to the burden of debt many African nations are grappling with — debt largely accumulated, while responding to climate-induced disasters and shocks.

“We are being forced to borrow to clean up the mess caused by climate change — a crisis we did not create. Debt forgiveness is not charity. It is justice,” he stated.

The Ghanaian case was particularly striking in the transport sector, where Issifu showcased Ghana’s leadership in adaptation and low carbon transition.

Achievements include the revision of the national transport policy in response to the Paris Agreement, and the adoption of a national electric vehicles policy in 2023.

The country is offering eight-year tax rebates on public electric vehicle imports, has digitised vehicle registration, and introduced emission standards and decentralised inspections.

The Minister of State for Climate Change and Sustainability, Seidu Issifu, also spotlighted the rise of innovative local enterprises such as KOFA, WAHU, and Solar Taxi — three dynamic companies mobilising investment into electric motorbikes and buses, leveraging carbon credit frameworks to drive private sector engagement.

In response, Professor Anthony Nyong of the African Development Bank shared tools under the NDC 3.0 implementation strategy, and reiterated the bank’s commitment to supporting bankable climate projects.

Botswana and Zimbabwe also echoed the importance of aligning NDCs with national development plans and leveraging innovative finance mechanisms.

The event served not only as a call to action but as a reminder that African countries are not waiting for solutions — they are building them.

Ghana’s presence and leadership, as expressed through Seidu Issifu’s intervention, resonated deeply with the audience.

It reinforced that with the right investment, policy backing and fair financial treatment, African NDCs can power the continent’s transformation.

As the SB62 meetings continue in Bonn, Ghana has once again positioned itself as a proactive voice for climate equity, innovation, and sustainable prosperity — and its NDCs stand as an open invitation for partnership, trust, and bold action.

‘Kissi Agyebeng should hand over Ofori-Atta’s case to EOCO, I don’t trust him’

Anthony Kwaku Boahene, (L), Ken Ofori-Atta and Kissi Agyebeng Anthony Kwaku Boahene, (L), Ken Ofori-Atta and Kissi Agyebeng

A former Deputy Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Anthony Kwaku Boahene, has called on the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, to fully hand over the case involving former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) or the Office of the Attorney General.

According to him, both EOCO and the Attorney General’s Office are capable of handling the matter, and that the Special Prosecutor appears more focused on public attention than results.

“He is just drawing attention just to create the impression that he is working. For me, I don’t trust him, he doesn’t want other investigative bodies to take up the case. He is an NPP member, who doesn’t know this in Ghana? Why didn’t he investigate Ofori-Atta for corruption during the previous administration?” he quizzed.

Ken Ofori-Atta is currently under investigation by the OSP for alleged corruption and procurement breaches during his tenure.

The OSP has re-declared him a wanted person and a fugitive from justice after he failed to appear for a scheduled investigative interview on Monday, June 2, 2025.

EOCO and the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) have reportedly launched separate, active investigations into Ofori-Atta’s financial dealings during his tenure as Minister of Finance.

A police officer in Algeria (L) stopped Wode Maya's car A police officer in Algeria (L) stopped Wode Maya’s car

Asamoah Gyan’s name has once again commanded respect far beyond the pitch, this time around, in unexpected places like Algeria.

Popular Ghanaian YouTuber Wode Maya shared a remarkable encounter during his travels in North Africa, revealing that he and his driver were stopped by Algerian police.

But once he mentioned he was from Ghana, the officer reportedly smiled and let them go, name-dropping none other than Asamoah Gyan, Ghana’s all-time top scorer.

“Be Bold, But Not a Bully” – Ahiafor Drops Cryptic Post After Tense Vetting Session

0

Bernard Ahiafor, First Deputy Speaker of Parliament and Chairperson of the Appointments Committee, has stirred public interest with a cryptic social media post after a heated series of exchanges with the committee’s Ranking Member, Alexander Afenyo-Markin as reported by Ghana Web.

The tension started during the vetting of seven Supreme Court nominees put forward by President John Dramani Mahama.

The three-day vetting session, held between June 16 and June 18, 2025, was marred by frequent clashes between the two MPs.

Disputes often erupted when Ahiafor, wielding his authority as chairman, halted what he considered “inappropriate” lines of questioning from Afenyo-Markin.

Though the Minority Leader occasionally accepted the rulings, he was visibly frustrated, accusing the chairman of bias.

Their disagreements reached a peak on the final day of the vetting when Afenyo-Markin cautioned Ahiafor that he would eventually face similar treatment when political dynamics shift.

“I pray for patience,” Afenyo-Markin stated, voicing his dissatisfaction with what he viewed as partial conduct by the committee chair.

In what appears to be a subtle response to the friction, Ahiafor took to Facebook after the vetting session, sharing a quote by motivational speaker Jim Rohn:

“The challenge of leadership is to be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not a bully… be confident, but not arrogant.”

The post was accompanied by an image of him at the committee hearing.

Ahiafor remained resolute throughout the sessions, asserting that he is “a man of indomitable spirit and cannot be intimidated”.

Bibiani Goldstars celebrate their league win

ALL 42 registered players of the Bibiani Goldstars, following their victory as the newly crowned Ghana Premier League champions, have received a bonus payout from betPawa.

This payout, renowned as the Locker Room Bonus, is a direct mobile money payout that typically goes only to players in the match-day squad.

The gesture, announced during the club’s Coronation match against Medeama SC, marked the first time in the initiative’s history that the entire team was honoured, regardless of who featured in the final game.

The match ended in a 0-0 draw, but the celebrations began long before the final whistle, as fans filled the stands of Bibiani Park to witness their team crowned league champions after an extraordinary campaign.

“This is a powerful symbol of recognition,” said Nii Armah Ashong-Katai, Regional Manager – CSR & Sports Development, West & Southern Africa at betPawa. “Every player in a squad plays a role in a season-long campaign. By rewarding all 42, we are honouring the idea that champions are not just made on matchday, but every single day in training, preparation, and sacrifice.”

Speaking with the players and technical team, many of them shared how the consistent bonuses motivated them to push harder and stay focused.

The Locker Room Bonus initiative has become a staple of betPawa’s partnership with the Ghana Premier League, providing players with instant financial rewards after each match.

The coronation also marked the continued dominance of the Western Region in Ghanaian football, as Bibiani Goldstars followed Medeama SC and Samartex in claiming top honours in recent seasons.

The Executive Director of Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG), Dr. Peter Kwame Yaboah, pledged to collaborate with the government to post qualified health practitioners to the facility to ensure quality health care delivery to the people of the region and beyond.

The Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri, in a speech read for him, expressed gratitude to the church of Pentecost for choosing to establish the hospital in Bolgatanga. She added that the government is collaborating with key stakeholders like the missionaries to deliver quality health, education, and other life-transforming infrastructure to the people of the Upper East Region.

US resumes student visas but orders enhanced social media vetting

0

The US State Department says it will resume scheduling appointments for international student visas, but will ask all applicants to make their social media accounts public for enhanced screening.

Officials have been instructed to expand social media vetting of applicants and search for “any indications of hostility toward the citizens, culture, government, institutions, or founding principles of the United States”.

The Trump administration had halted the scheduling of student visa appointments in late May as it prepared to step up measures to restrict applicants deemed hostile to the US.

The guidelines will impact all applicants who apply for F visas, which are primarily used by students.

Applicants for the M visas, used for vocational students, and the J visas, used by exchange students, will also be impacted, a State Department spokesperson said.

Those who keep their social media accounts private may be deemed as trying to hide their activity, the department added.

“It is an expectation from American citizens that their government will make every effort to make our country safer, and that is exactly what the Trump Administration is doing every single day,” a senior State Department official said.

Officers have also been instructed to screen for those “who advocate for, aid, or support designated foreign terrorists and other threats to national security; or who perpetrate unlawful anti-Semitic harassment or violence”.

LatexFoamPromo

The move is part of a broader crackdown by the Trump administration against America’s most elite universities.

President Donald Trump has deemed these institutions too left-wing, and has accused them of failing to combat antisemitism when pro-Palestinian protests have unfolded on campuses.

Trump’s crackdown has also included the freezing of hundreds of millions of dollars in funding for universities, as well as moving to deport students or revoking visas for others. Many of those actions have been blocked by US courts.

Among the institutions scrutinised by the president is Harvard University, which had $2.65bn (£1.96bn) in federal grants frozen.

Trump has also tried to revoke Harvard’s ability to enrol international students, though that move has been temporarily blocked by a federal judge while the matter is being heard in court.

More than 1.1 million international students from over 210 countries were enrolled in US colleges in the 2023-24 school year, according to Open Doors, an organisation that collects data on foreign students.

Social media influencer, Seyram Adablah Social media influencer, Seyram Adablah

Former National Service personnel, Deborah Seyram Adablah, whose legal battle with her sugar daddy captured massive attention, is once again making waves on social media, this time following her release from a 45-day jail sentence.

On Tuesday, May 6, 2025, reports emerged that Seyram Adablah had been sentenced to 45 days in prison for contempt of court.

The ruling stemmed from her open criticisms about the court’s handling of her case, questioning the integrity of Ghana’s judiciary and warning the judge to be fair in his rulings.

Her comments, which were played in open court, influenced the judge’s decision to issue a bench warrant for her arrest.

Subsequently, after serving the 45-day jail sentence, Deborah Seyram Adablah has posted a video on social media on June 19, 2025, announcing her return.

In the video, which quickly went viral, she boldly declared,”Back like I never left. I am back. All of you will go on low battery. You said I don’t look like I’ve been in prison, right? Oh my God! God is the greatest, and I will be back.”

Her statement has since triggered a flurry of reactions online.

While some netizens mocked or criticised her for the perceived lack of remorse, others suggested that she might need psychological support.

The video has sparked debate around accountability, media sensationalism, and mental health.

Background

Seyram Adablah first made headlines when she filed a lawsuit against her ‘sugar daddy’ Ernest Kwasi Nimako, alleging that he had breached several promises made to her during thier romantic relationship.

Among her demands were financial compensation and ownership of a Honda Civic, which she claimed he had gifted to her.

However, on May 16, 2023, the court ordered Adablah to hand over the vehicle, registered GC 7899-23, to the court registrar for safekeeping until a final judgment could be made.

Reports emerged that she had failed to comply with the court’s order.

Ablakwa details how Fred Kwarteng made $4.8m yearly by ‘illegally’ redirecting clients

0

Foreign affairs minister Samuel Ablakwa has accused a sacked embassy staff member of corruption Foreign affairs minister Samuel Ablakwa has accused a sacked embassy staff member of corruption

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, appeared before Parliament on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, over the alleged corruption scandal at Ghana’s embassy in Washington, DC, which led to the closure of the embassy for days.

Addressing the Members of Parliament, Ablakwa disclosed that an investigation into the scandal has shown that the main suspect in the scandal, Fred Kwarteng, earned a staggering $4.8 million annually at the expense of the state while serving at the embassy.

The minister, who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for North Tongu, disclosed that Fred Kwarteng, who was a contract staff member at the Ghana Embassy, made millions of dollars by illegally diverting clients of the embassy to his company, GTC, for delivery services.

“This dual role as IT contract staff and at the same time service provider, where he illegally redirects applicants to his own company (GTC), created a criminally unacceptable situation where personal interest was clearly prioritised over official duties, to the detriment of the Mission’s objectives and public’s trust.

“Investigations have revealed that on November 19, 2019, Mr Fred Kwarteng was issued a formal query when the then Head of Chancery, H.E. Genevieve Akpaloo, who is now the Head of Mission in the Ghana embassy in Tokyo, Japan, first discovered this illegal link on the website. It is curious that not much appeared to have happened after that query, as shockingly, Mr Kwarteng became bolder with his unlawful activities, which continued after more than six years,” he added.

The foreign affairs minister went on to give a breakdown of the amount of money the accused person, whom he indicated will be investigated by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), was making.

He said that from 2019, Kwarteng delivered an average of 250 visas and passports daily, charging about $30 per delivery.

He added that GTC was also charging clients of the embassy for assisting them in filing their visa application forms.

“Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the Mission adopted a fully online mailing system for visa and passport dispatch, managed by Fred Kwarteng. Under this arrangement, applicants were offered delivery options via FedEx and USPS, for which they were charged a whopping $29.75 each. Additionally, GTC also aids applicants in completing visa and passport forms, for a fee of $60.00 to $100.00 per applicant. Mr Speaker, it will interest you to know that 99% of all applicants utilised the services of GTC, meaning 99% of all applicants paid an extra $29.75. Investigations reveal that GTC dispatched between 150 to 350 visas/passports daily. Therefore, on average, about 250 visas/passports were dispatched daily by GTC.

“This implies that, on average, yearly, GTC dispatched approximately 62,500 visas/passports. Fred Kwarteng has therefore been raking in an estimated $1,859,375.00 annually for courier services alone. Therefore, Mr Speaker, you can comprehend the substantial sum he earns annually after adding fees for assisting applicants in completing their visa and passport forms, for which he charged between $60 and $100. By conservative analysis, Mr Fred Kwarteng was making about $4.8 million annually from his unlawful enterprise. It is important to emphasise that there was no share of this amount to the ministry,” the MP said.

CLGA applauds EU for funding PFM Compliance League Table initiative

Ms. Sanderine Coet delivered remarks on behalf of the European Union Delegation to Ghana Ms. Sanderine Coet delivered remarks on behalf of the European Union Delegation to Ghana

The Centre for Local Governance Advocacy (CLGA) has commended the European Union (EU) for its instrumental role in funding the 2024 edition of the Public Financial Management Compliance League Table (PFMCLT) and other governance-related initiatives.

The PFMCLT serves as a vital accountability tool for assessing the financial management practices of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs). It was officially launched at a high-level event attended by key stakeholders in Ghana’s governance and decentralisation space.

The launch was officiated by Dr Eric Oduro Osae, a United Nations Audit Advisor, who underscored the importance of transparency, accountability, and evidence-based policy interventions in strengthening local governance.

This year’s league table ranked La Dade-Kotopon Municipal Assembly as the top-performing district in public financial management compliance.

However, notably, none of the Metropolitan Assemblies made it into the top 30, highlighting persistent challenges in urban fiscal governance. Agona East District ranked last, placing 258th out of 261 districts assessed, while three districts could not be evaluated due to prevailing security concerns.

Delivering remarks on behalf of the European Union Delegation to Ghana, Ms. Sanderine Coet highlighted the PFMCLT as a critical instrument for promoting accountability and improving financial governance.

She emphasised that the league table provides a structured mechanism for identifying weaknesses, offering data-driven insights, and informing targeted support to elevate standards across all districts.

“This initiative underscores our shared vision with Ghanaian institutions to strengthen fiscal discipline, advance fiscal decentralisation, enhance domestic revenue mobilisation, and promote efficient expenditure management,” Ms. Coet stated.

“These are essential steps towards reducing financial leakages, curbing corruption, and maximising the impact of public resources for improved service delivery,” she added.

The Centre for Local Governance Advocacy reaffirmed its commitment to working with both national and international partners to promote transparent, responsive, and accountable governance at the local level.

Ronwen Williams becomes first goalkeeper to get penalised under FIFA’s new 8-second rule

0

Ronwen Williams (L) getting instructions from the referee Ronwen Williams (L) getting instructions from the referee

Ronwen Williams has made an unexpected bit of football history at the ongoing FIFA Club World Cup, but not for a clean sheet or a heroic save.

The Mamelodi Sundowns and South Africa No.1 became the first goalkeeper to be penalised under FIFA’s newly enforced eight-second rule for ball handling.

The incident occurred during Sundowns’ Group F clash against Ulsan Hyundai on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, when Williams held onto the ball for 14 seconds, well over the new eight-second limit introduced by FIFA to discourage time-wasting.

As a result, the referee awarded a corner kick to Ulsan, a first since the new regulation was put into effect.

While the moment sparked confusion on the pitch, it was quickly clarified by officials and broadcast analysts, highlighting FIFA’s shift toward stricter enforcement of time-related infractions in an effort to speed up the game.

Despite the blunder, Williams and Sundowns held their nerve and went on to win the match 1-0, securing a crucial three points and climbing to the top of Group F at the tournament.

The incident didn’t prove costly, but it did leave Williams with a rather unusual claim to fame.

Williams wasn’t the only goalkeeper caught off-guard by the new rule. Yassine Bounou also exceeded the limit during Al Hilal’s 1-1 draw with Real Madrid on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, though his infraction drew less attention and impact.

The new rule, which awards a corner kick to the opposition if a goalkeeper holds the ball for more than eight seconds, replaces the previous six-second guideline, one that was rarely enforced.

FIFA has introduced this change to help reduce time-wasting and keep matches more fluid.

I want to ‘kill’ all television stations showing unauthorised movies – Shirley Frimpong-Manso

0

Ghanaian film producer Shirley Frimpong-Manso has strongly condemned television stations that air unauthorised films, describing the act as not only criminal but deeply hurtful to filmmakers.

Speaking on with Doreen Avio, the award-winning filmmaker expressed frustration over the widespread disregard for copyright laws in Ghana’s media landscape.

“I want to kill all of them. I have a personal concern and I do not watch pirated stuff — I don’t care,” she said passionately. “People have said, ‘Oh, have you seen it?’ I said no. They said, ‘Oh, use this link and you can watch it.’ I never do because I know how much it hurts to spend.”

Frimpong-Manso highlighted the intense labour and financial cost involved in producing films, stressing that each production is a demanding endeavour requiring significant resources.

“Movie making is excruciating — the money, having to have 30, 40-plus people on set every day, feeding them — it’s a lot,” she explained. “Even a five or ten-day production involves feeding everyone breakfast, lunch, and sometimes dinner. The emotional, financial, and logistical investment is massive.”

She described the emotional devastation of having those efforts undermined by piracy.

“To be able to put that movie out and have somebody just take it and show it… I can’t begin to describe it. It hurts more than anything in the world.”

Frimpong-Manso also questioned the lack of accountability and enforcement despite clear evidence of wrongdoing by media houses that air pirated content.

“I don’t understand why we know who the culprits are, and somehow they’re still out there doing it,” she said. “This is something we can’t keep warning people about — it’s a criminal offence. There’s evidence. I don’t understand why we’re babysitting this kind of thing.”

Her comments have sparked renewed calls within the industry for stricter enforcement of intellectual property laws and greater respect for the work of Ghanaian creatives.

“With Just 13% More, Kennedy Will Cross the Line” – Campaign Team Sparks MP Support Row

0

Tensions are mounting within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the camps of Kennedy Agyapong and former Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia jostle for dominance ahead of the party’s 2026 flagbearer election as per reports from ModernGhana on Thursday, June 19, 2025.

The two frontrunners are now locked in a fierce contest over who commands the most support from the party’s Members of Parliament (MPs).

A member of Kennedy Agyapong’s campaign, Dr. Palgrage Boakye-Danquah, has claimed that at least 50 MPs are backing the former Assin Central legislator.

Speaking on Accra-based AsaasePa FM, he said internal projections showed that Agyapong had already secured 37% of grassroots support. According to him, “With just 13% more, he will cross the line.”

He further suggested that the Vice-President’s influence is waning, pointing to emerging contenders like Bryan Acheampong and Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum as signs of fragmentation within Bawumia’s base.

However, in a swift rebuttal, Dr. Bawumia’s camp rejected the claims. Krobea Kwabena Asante, an aide to the Vice-President, posted on Facebook that 67 out of the approximately 88 NPP MPs are aligned with Dr. Bawumia.

He added that only a handful are neutral or supporting other candidates.

The party’s leadership recently announced January 31, 2026, as the date for the presidential primaries, setting the stage for months of intense internal campaigning.

In addition to Bawumia and Agyapong, others such as Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Bryan Acheampong, and Kwabena Agyei Agyapong are reportedly considering a run for the flagbearer position, indicating a competitive race ahead for the ruling party.

I Haven’t Retired From Int’l Football – Baba Rahman

0

Baba Rahman

Ghana defender, Baba Rahman, has clarified that he has not retired from international football despite his long absence from the Black Stars.

The former Chelsea left back has been out of the senior national team since November 2023 after he was subjected to boos by fans during the last round of games of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against the Central African Republic at the Baba Yara Stadium.

After the barbaric act, the POAK defender took a break from the national team, citing both emotional and physical reasons.

Speaking to Joy Sports, Baba Rahman opened up about his decision and reaffirmed his commitment to a return.

“The booing didn’t affect me during the match, as a professional, you learn to deal with that. But after the final whistle, as I walked to the team bus, it really sank in,” he said.

“We had just won, so naturally, I expected some joy or support, but instead, I was still being booed. That part was tough to take.”

Baba Rahman explained that the decision to step away wasn’t only emotional but also necessary for his physical well-being.

“I hadn’t been fully fit for a while, and I felt it was the right time to focus on my body and recover properly. As for the incident at the stadium, I’ve moved on. It’s part of football, and I understand.”

He also confirmed his intentions to return to the national team.

“I’ll be back soon, God willing. I’ve stayed in regular contact with the coach. It’s just been unfortunate timing at every international break, something seems to come up with my fitness. But I’m working hard, and I’ll be ready.”

Sunyani Traditional Council suspends Queenmother over disputed enstoolment

0

The succession dispute in the Sunyani Traditional Area has taken a dramatic turn with the indefinite suspension of the Paramount Queenmother, Nana Akosua Duaa Asor Sika Brayie II.

The Sunyani Traditional Council, which announced the suspension with immediate effect, has also barred the Queenmother from performing any public duties on behalf of the council.

Her suspension follows her alleged involvement in the enstoolment of Dr Osei Tutu as Omanhene of the Sunyani Traditional Area to succeed the late Nana Bosoma Asor Nkrawiri II, who passed away in July 2022 and was buried in April 2024.

Caution to the public

At a press conference, the Acting President of the Sunyani Traditional Council, Nana Kwaku Sarbeng Ababio II, cautioned the public and all institutions—especially the media—against engaging the Queenmother in any official capacity.

“The Nananom of the Sunyani Traditional Area/Council hereby inform all state institutions, the media, and the general public that Nana Akosua Duaa Asor Sika Brayie II has been suspended indefinitely from her position as the Paramount Queenmother of Sunyani,” he stated.

Nana Ababio, who also serves as Akwamuhene, urged stakeholders to treat the communiqué with urgency and seriousness, emphasising the Council’s commitment to preserving the integrity of traditional leadership.

Monday incident

It was alleged that in the early hours of Monday, the suspended Queenmother used some “mecho men” in an attempt to overpower private security personnel at the Sunyani Old Palace, in a bid to install her preferred candidate—despite the Traditional Council having already enstooled Odeefuo Ogyeamansan Boahen Korkor II as the legitimate successor.

However, private security reportedly thwarted the attempted takeover after an exchange of gunfire. When the plan to seize the palace failed, the Queenmother allegedly conducted a separate installation ceremony at her private residence in Baakoniaba.

LatexFoamPromo

Dr Osei Tutu, a 63-year-old US-based Doctor of Physical Therapy, was reportedly given the stool name Ofentemfrem Omenasono Dr Bosoma Asor Nkrawiri III.

Council’s position

Nana Ababio described the Queenmother’s actions as an affront to the customs and traditions of the Traditional Council.

“What transpired is a clear affront to our customs and traditions, bringing public ridicule upon the Boahen Korkor Stool,” he said.

He added that her conduct was not only disrespectful but also a threat to the dignity of traditional leadership.

“This behaviour undermines the integrity of our leadership and affects the very fabric of our community,” he noted.

Only one recognised Chief

Nana Ababio emphasised that Odeefuo Ogyeamansan Boahen Korkor II remains the only legitimate chief of the Sunyani Traditional Area.

“There is no other chief in the Sunyani Traditional Area other than Odeefuo Ogyeamansan Boahen Korkor II,” he said.

“This has been affirmed by the Bono Regional House of Chiefs, which dismissed the interlocutory injunction filed by the Queenmother on April 8, 2025.”

He described the enstooled chief as a unifier and a peacemaker who had made efforts to reconcile all factions, including those who initially opposed his installation.

Installation ‘illegal’

Commenting on the purported installation of Dr Tutu, Nana Ababio described it as illegal and baseless.

He revealed that Dr Tutu had been one of seven aspirants for the stool but was rejected by the Kingmakers for failing to prove his lineage.

“The Queenmother has no authority to appoint anyone as chief,” Nana Ababio stressed.
