Ablekuma North collation: Police playing funny games with us – NPP

0

The General Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has accused the Ghana Police Service of deliberate inaction that is preventing the Electoral Commission (EC) from concluding the collation of results in the disputed Ablekuma North constituency in the Greater Accra region.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Mr Kodua claimed that only three polling stations remain to be collated, but the process has stalled due to the failure of the Police to provide the needed security.

“It’s left with just three polling stations for the EC to finish collating all the results and declare the winner for Ablekuma North,” he said.

According to him, every time the Electoral Commission attempts to invite political parties to discuss the process, certain individuals gather at the EC office to cause disturbances.

“Anytime the EC calls the parties for discussions, some bad elements mass up at the EC office and try to cause mayhem,” he noted.

He said that, in anticipation of this, the EC wrote to the Police Service to request protection, but the Police keep “going back and forth” with excuses.

“The EC wrote to the police for protection, but the Police are giving different stories,” he claimed.

Mr Kodua revealed that the NPP wrote to the Police on June 3, seeking clarity on the security arrangements needed to carry out the collation as directed by the High Court.

He stressed that the people of Ablekuma North urgently need a Member of Parliament.

“We need to complete this process. Ablekuma North needs an MP as soon as possible,” he stated.

He further disclosed that the Police responded to the NPP’s letter, indicating they were waiting for legal advice from the Attorney General before acting.

But Mr Kodua questioned the delay, alleging bias on the part of the security agency.

“To me, the Police are only doing the bidding of the NDC,” he alleged.

He added that in the coming weeks, the party will make public the legal steps they have taken to ensure the collation is completed.

“We’ll make public the legal steps we’ve taken. We are confident we won the elections,” he stressed.

The EC was earlier ordered by the High Court to complete the collation exercise in the constituency.

The NPP insists there is no legal impediment preventing the collation and is calling on the Police to act immediately to allow the EC to carry out its mandate.

Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor – MP for Awutu Senya East

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has formally cautioned some leading public figures in the country over the use of unearned titles in their portfolio, describing them as “misleading”.

On Monday, June 16, GTEC tackled two of Ghana’s Members of Parliament (MPs), Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunor (Awutu Senya East) and Desmond De-Graft Paitoo (Gomoa East), both representing constituencies in the Central Region, and Prof. Kwame Adom-Frimpong of the Internal Audit Agency, requesting that they refrain from using the honorary titles “Doctor” (Dr.) and “Professor” (Prof.) in their names during official or public communications.

In a strongly worded statement, GTEC said it was alarmed by Naa Koryoo’s continued use of the title despite no evidence of a valid academic conferment. The Commission described her conduct as misleading and a breach of established academic protocols.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Commission wishes to express its serious concern regarding the use of unearned academic titles, whether conferred by institutions within Ghana or abroad,” the statement read.

According to GTEC, the unauthorised use of the “Doctor” title undermines public trust and violates Ghana’s standards for academic credentials. The Commission has, therefore, directed her to immediately cease using the title in all public and professional spaces.

“Given the above, you are by this letter requested to cease the use of the title ‘Doctor,’” GTEC stated.

Naa Koryoo has also been instructed to provide verifiable proof that the title has been removed from all platforms, including websites, official documents, campaign materials, letterheads, and social media accounts.

GTEC, in a letter dated June 3, 2025, to De-Graft Paitoo, directed him to stop using the “Doctor” title until he provides clarification on the awarding institution of the doctoral title, whether the degree was earned or honorary, when it was conferred, and the process through which the title was granted.

GTEC requested the Gomoa East MP to take full responsibility for this matter and immediately refrain from using the honorary title “Doctor” (Dr.) as part of his name in any official or public communication.

Similarly, GTEC requested Kwame Adom-Frimpong to refrain from the use of the “Professor” title, saying, “In the light of the above, the Commission is requesting you to submit a copy of the letter from a recognised institution appointing or promoting you to the rank of associate professor or professor. Otherwise, you are requested as a matter of urgency to cease the use of the title “Professor.”

“You are further required to provide verifiable evidence that the title has been withdrawn from all relevant platforms, including but not limited to official documents, institutional profiles, websites, letterheads, and any other public or professional representations,” the letter added.

Ablekuma North Collation: NDC is frustrating the process – Justin Kodua

0

The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has accused the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of deliberately stalling the collation process in the Ablekuma North constituency of the Greater Accra region, following the 2025 general elections.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Justin Kodua claimed the NDC is resorting to delay tactics because it did not win the election in the constituency.

“If the NDC had genuinely won the Ablekuma North elections, the results would have been declared by now,” he stated.

“They know they have lost, and what they are doing is only to frustrate the process.”

Mr Kodua also alleged that the Ghana Police Service is acting in favour of the NDC, accusing them of aiding the opposition’s efforts to obstruct the collation.

“We have met as a National Executive Council and concluded that the police are doing the bidding of the NDC.

But as a party, we are taking legal steps and will announce them soon. We won’t sit back and allow this kind of frustration over an election we have clearly won,” he said.

Faith-based school rules don’t breach rights, you accepted by enrolling

0

Supreme Court judge nominee, Justice Hafisata Amaleboba, has asserted that students who voluntarily choose to attend faith-based schools are bound by the institutions’ codes of conduct, and such expectations should not be viewed as a violation of rights or an act of compulsion.

Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, Justice Amaleboba responded to questions on balancing constitutional freedoms—particularly freedom of religion—with institutional rules in faith-based public schools.

She made clear that while rights are fundamental, they are not absolute and must be exercised within the boundaries of public interest and the rights of others.

“Rights are not absolute. Every right has its limitation, including being limited by the rights of others and the public interest,” she said.

Citing the example of students who enrol in Catholic schools, she argued that once individuals are informed of the school’s religious requirements and choose to attend, they do so willingly and accept the conditions voluntarily.

“If you are in a Catholic school, having chosen a Catholic school, knowing it is a Catholic school and the code of conduct requires that you do certain things and you were informed prior to it and you still chose to attend, then to me it will mean that is not compulsion,” she stated.

According to her, such choices constitute a voluntary act—not an infringement on individual liberty—since students are made aware of expectations such as attending church or participating in other religious activities before enrollment.

“So it is not a compulsion, it is a voluntary act because before you came to the school you were told that this is a Catholic school, we’ll expect you to go to Church on Sundays, we’ll expect you to do this and you took that voluntary decision to attend the school. And so I do not see that it is compulsion,” she added.

Her comments touch on a sensitive area in Ghana’s educational and legal landscape, where past controversies have arisen over students’ rights to opt out of religious activities in mission schools.

Justice Amaleboba’s position reinforces the principle that institutional identity and informed consent can lawfully coexist with constitutional freedoms.

Three BECE invigilators arrested for alleged malpractice granted bail

0

Three invigilators in the Ashanti Region have been arrested and subsequently granted bail over their alleged involvement in examination malpractices during the ongoing 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

The suspects were picked up at different examination centres, including Twedie and Mampong, following tip-offs that led to their arrest.

According to the Ashanti Regional Branch Controller of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Ernest Akoto Yeboah, the invigilators were allegedly caught with photocopied answers and images of examination questions on their mobile phones. In some instances, candidates were also found with similar unauthorised materials.

Mr. Yeboah expressed grave concern about the situation, warning that such breaches threaten the credibility of the examination process.

“We are preparing our report on those cases, and we have forwarded it to Accra. The committee in Accra will sit on the report and decide on what to do; ours is just to submit the report. As to how it will happen next year, we will talk about it after the exams,” he stated.

WAEC is expected to take further action once the report is reviewed by its headquarters.

Pan-Africanists strengthen case for reparations from colonial masters

0

A number of key Pan-African organisations in Africa have held an online forum, demanding real compensation for the colonial legacy and presenting specific legal mechanisms for obtaining reparations.

The Pan-African Movement for Reparations, Justice and Restoration of Historical Memory demanded specific actions from the African Union (AU) and the African Development Bank (AfDB) to achieve ultimate compensation to Africa for the ills of colonialism and slavery.

The group consequently resolved unanimously to petition the AU and the AfDB to lead efforts to recoup adequate reparations to the continent for the centuries of exploitation and dehumanising experience at the hands of colonial powers.

The regional online forum, held on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, brought together Pan-Africanist activists, leaders of non-governmental organisations, and experts from seven African countries to discuss the subject.

It marked the development of a decisive position and the transition from discussions to practical steps to recover compensation for the centuries-old exploitation of the continent.

It was held on the theme: “Reparations must become a reality! Reparations must be paid now!”

The move comes in the wake of recent calls by President, John Dramani Mahama, for adequate compensation to Africa for the extensive injuries suffered by the continent for the impact of colonisation, slave trade and the footprints they left behind.

At this year’s AU Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in February and on May 25 reserved to commemorate African unity, President Mahama emphasised that the time has come to concretise efforts for reparation to Africa for the impact of the Western actions on the continent, vis a vis colonization, slave trade, exploitation, among others.

The Pan-African Movement for Reparations, Justice and Restoration of Historical Memory wants specific actions from the AU and the AfDB to achieve ultimate compensation to Africa for the ills of colonialism and slavery.

Ouzairou Mamane, who chairs Niger-based ANJUD, a socialist group that champions African development, opened the forum with a reminder of the 17 million Africans who were shipped into slavery and the up to 50 million people who died as a result of the slave trade, stressing that “the historical facts are clear and indisputable; European countries have benefited enormously from Africa”.

Moussa Kuruma from Guinea gave shocking estimates of colonialism to the economic damage of Africa, saying European colonisation alone cost the African continent up to $777 trillion.

Other speakers were even more direct with their views on reparations to Africa.

For instance, Socrate Gutenberg from the Central African Republic called out France for its activities in Africa from the days of colonialism to the present.

“We have gathered here to make it clear: France must compensate (Africa) for the damage. The time of silence is over. It’s time to present the bill,” he said.

Mr Gutenberg said colonialism was not merely responsible for the plundering of resources (coffee, cotton, ivory) from Africa, but also for destroying the identity of the people.

“It imposed religion, imposed language, and sowed discord in order to better control us,” he said, pointing to its continued influence, including support for coups d’état and the recent arrest of Armel Sayo of the Central African Republic.

“Colonialism destroyed our identity by imposing language, religion and sowing discord. Even after the withdrawal of French troops in 2022, Paris’s influence remains through the support of coups and puppet leaders, as in the case of the arrest of Armel Sayo in the CAR.

“Similar things happened in Mali and Burkina Faso, where France looted gold and uranium, conducting operations Serval and Barkhan. Studies estimate France’s debt at hundreds of billions of dollars: $302 billion for Mali and $320 billion for Burkina Faso. It’s time to present the bill,” Mr Gutenberg added.

Two others, namely Kwesi Pratt Jnr of Ghana and Mohammed Saleh Allan of Chad, insisted that reparations to Africa could not be limited to monetary compensations.

Mr Pratt, a respected journalist and leader of the Socialist Movement of Ghana, insisted that reparations are not the end, but the continuation of the struggle for the dignity and rights of African peoples as championed by Modibo Keita, Sekou Toure, Kwame Nkrumah, Nelson Mandela, Chris Hani, Patrice Lumumba and Amilcar Cabral.

“This is a struggle for the redistribution of stolen wealth, the restoration of what was taken away and the correction of the consequences of deliberate genocide, the destruction of our culture and sovereignty. Seventeen million Africans were forcibly removed from Africa, subjected to aggression and exploitation. Reparations are our legitimate right to return stolen resources that continue to flow to European capitalists. No amount of money can compensate for 17 million lives, but reparations must include not only finances, but also the restoration of culture, lands, artifacts, and educational systems that meet our needs. This is a holistic liberation mechanism that restores dignity to Africa,” Mr Pratt, who is also a member of the organising committee of the Pan-African Progressive Front, said.

Mr Saleh Allan of the Civic Network, based in Chad, on the other hand, stressed the need to “stay in the legal field” even if new norms have to be created.

Former US President, Barack Obama, frequently advocated reparations to Africa and African peoples in recognition of the injustices inflicted by colonialism, the slave trade and other dehumanising experiences.

All these reinforce the urgent need for the continent to ride on the back of a vibrant Pan-African movement like the Pan-African Progressive Front to demand their pound of flesh from their colonial masters.

Tyler Perry sued $260 million for sexual harassment of young actor

0

Tyler Perry is being sued for $260 million over sexual assault by Derek Dixon, who plays the character Dale, in Perry’s show, “The Oval.”

According to the lawsuit filed against the actor and filmmaker on Friday, June 13, 2025, Dixon claimed “a sustained pattern of workplace sexual harassment, assault, and retaliation perpetrated by Tyler Perry” and is suing the filmmaker for alleged quid pro quo sexual harassment, work environment harassment and more.

The lawsuit has alleged that Tyler Perry had promised Dixon “career advancement and creative opportunities,” only to “subject him to escalating sexual harassment, assault and battery, and professional retaliation when Mr. Dixon did not reciprocate Mr. Perry’s unwanted advances.”

In the lawsuit, Dixon said he and Tyler Perry met in 2019 while he worked for an event organising company, which had been booked to plan the opening party for Tyler Perry Studios.

According to Dixon, he was assigned a role at the party that “required frequent conversation with Tyler Perry.”

The suit stated that the “Straw” filmmaker and Dixon exchanged phone numbers at the end of the party, and Perry began asking the then-aspiring actor about his goals.

Following that, Tyler Perry cast Dixon in his show, “Ruthless,” and began sending Dixon “strange and untowardly” text messages.

The suit further alleged that on January 2020, Tyler Perry invited Dixon to his home in Douglasville County, Georgia, where they drank alcoholic drinks and had a “friendly” conversation.

Afterwards, he told Dixon not to drive home since he was intoxicated and offered him the guest room in his home. The lawsuit claims Perry sexually assaulted Dixon that night.

According to the lawsuit, Dixon tried to ignore Perry’s calls and texts after the assault, which became more aggressive “until finally Perry offered Dixon a part in a new show called ‘The Oval.'” To which he agreed.

According to the lawsuit, Dixon “put up” with Perry’s comments due to fear over his role in the show being cut.

“Dixon immediately understood that his job security depended on his ‘relationship’ with Perry,” the lawsuit states. “From this point on, Dixon worked with the constant fear of losing his job if he did not engage with and endure Perry’s sexual harassment.”

According to the suit, Tyler Perry had allegedly threatened to kill off Dixon’s character.

However, tensions allegedly escalated between Dixon and Perry after they filmed the episode where Dixon’s character was shot four times, “indicating a seeming end to his role on the show and his termination from the job.”

Perry had invited Dixon to his trailer for drinks. The lawsuit states that after he asked Dixon if he was attracted to him and other inappropriate questions, Perry allegedly sexually assaulted Dixon again when he was about to leave the trailer.

“As soon as Derek Dixon left the trailer following Perry’s violent assault, Dixon became severely nauseous and extremely anxious about his job, career and livelihood,” the lawsuit states.

Another incident took place on Perry’s private island in the Bahamas, where the cast was having a party, the lawsuit alleges.

By December 2020, Dixon began “feeling depleted” due to Perry’s “continued pattern of sexual harassment,” according to the lawsuit. “The assaults and harassment began manifesting in his physical health and Mr. Dixon had no one to turn to.”

The complaint alleges that as the sexual harassment continued through the beginning of 2021, Dixon was prescribed an antidepressant for the stress he began experiencing.

In June 2021, Dixon claimed he was invited by Perry to his house again to discuss the pilot for Dixon’s show, “Losing It.” At the meeting, Dixon alleges he was sexually assaulted again.

Dixon decided to move to Santa Monica, California, “to put some distance between himself and Perry.”

But the lawsuit states that the “quid pro quo harassment and attempts to cover up the sexual assault by promising a show continued.”

After promising to produce Dixon’s show multiple times, Dixon realised in 2024 that Perry was doing so to prevent Dixon “from exposing the dark side of Tyler Perry,” the suit claims.

When reached for comment, attorneys for Dixon told ABC, “At this point Mr. Dixon has no comment. We believe the complaint speaks for itself.”

In response to the lawsuit, Matthew Boyd, an attorney for Perry and TPS Production Services, LLC, said, “This is an individual who got close to Tyler Perry for what now appears to be nothing more than setting up a scam. But Tyler will not be shaken down and we are confident these fabricated claims of harassment will fail.”

Watch as Afenyo-Markin and Bernard Ahiafor clash again in Parliament

0

Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin (L) and Bernard Ahiafor have clashed on several occasions. Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin (L) and Bernard Ahiafor have clashed on several occasions.

The Chairman of the Appointments Committee of Parliament, Bernard Ahiafor, and the Ranking Member of the Committee, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, clashed once again during the vetting of seven Supreme Court justice nominees.

The two lawmakers, who have engaged in a series of heated exchanges since the vetting process began on Monday, June 16, 2025, locked horns again on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, when Justice Hafisata Amaleboba appeared before the committee.

The clash ensued when Ahiafor interrupted Afenyo-Markin’s line of questioning, arguing that he was repeating a question that the nominee had already addressed.

“Honourable Minority Leader, is it not the same question that you are coming back to ask? The same question has been asked, and answers have been provided. So for me, it is the same question that you are rephrasing. So, you may answer another question, please,” Ahiafor said.

This comment infuriated Afenyo-Markin, who accused the committee chairman of deliberately attempting to frustrate his questioning.

“Chairman, if you want to find a way to stop this vetting, I will urge you; stop what you are doing. The whole country is watching you. Stop what you are doing. Stop what you are doing. If you want us to fold up, I’m not here to debate with you. I’ll fold. Discharge her. Let us go. If that’s what you want to achieve. I’ve seen it all.

“But whatever precedent, if not four years, 12 years, 20 years, it will come back and haunt this House… If you are strategically planning that a Supreme Court nominee should not go through this thing, so be it. But this question is not out of order,” the Minority Leader stated.

Dada Joe, 10 others charged in US over romance scams following FBI investigations

0

Ghanaian businessman Joseph Kwadwo Badu Boateng, popularly known as “Dada Joe Remix,” has reportedly been charged in the United States for his alleged involvement in a decade-long transnational fraud scheme.

According to a report by the US Department of Justice, Boateng was arrested in Ghana on May 28, 2025, following a U.S. extradition request.

He was subsequently indicted in the District of Arizona on May 30, 2025, on charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering.

He has now been extradited to the United States.

According to U.S. court records released by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Boateng and his associates allegedly operated a romance and inheritance scam between 2013 and 2023, deceiving elderly victims into believing they were entitled to gold and jewels.

The victims were told these valuables could only be released after paying fabricated taxes and fees.

The charges against Boateng form part of a broader federal operation aimed at dismantling international fraud networks that prey on senior citizens. The U.S. Department of Justice announced the crackdown in conjunction with World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, reinforcing its commitment to protecting vulnerable older Americans.

In related developments, five individuals, Dwayne Asafo Adjei, David Onyinye Abuanekwu, Nancy Adom, Eric Aidoo, and Nader Wasif, were charged in the Northern District of Ohio for their alleged roles in similar scams.

An indictment unsealed on June 4 alleges that the group defrauded elderly U.S. citizens between December 2017 and March 2024 through fake romantic relationships and fraudulent business deals.

U.S. officials say the group laundered the stolen funds and distributed them to co-conspirators in Ghana and other countries.

Another indictment, unsealed on May 13, 2025, names Otuo Amponsah, Anna Amponsah, Hannah Adom, Portia Joe, Abdoul Issaka Assimiou, and again, Dwayne Asafo Adjei.

This group also faces charges tied to romance scams that tricked seniors into sending large sums of money under false pretenses.

All three cases are being investigated by the FBI and form part of a wider Justice Department initiative to combat international fraud targeting elderly Americans.

“Prosecutors across the country are stepping up the fight against malicious schemes that target older Americans. We are working with law enforcement at home and abroad to bring these criminals to justice and protect our seniors,” U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi said.

United States v. Charles Uchenna Nwadavid.

On April 9, the U.S. Attorney’s Office (USAO) for the District of Massachusetts announced charges against Charles Uchenna Nwadavid, a citizen of Nigeria who was arrested after landing at the Dallas-Fort Worth Airport. In January 2024, a grand jury indicted Nawadavid on one count of mail fraud and two counts of money laundering. Between approximately 2016 to September 2019, Nwadavid allegedly participated in romance scams that tricked victims into sending money abroad.

United States v. Otuo Amponsah et al. On May 13, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio unsealed charges against Otuo Amponsah, Anna Amponsah, Hannah Adom, Portia Joe, Abdoul Issaka Assimiou, and Dwayne Asafo Adjei for their participation in conspiracies to commit wire fraud and money laundering.

According to court documents, from December 2017 through March 2024, the defendants used various wire fraud and romance fraud schemes — often targeting elderly individuals in the United States — to obtain funds from victims by means of false pretenses. The defendants shared funds obtained from victims with co-conspirators in the Republic of Ghana and elsewhere. This case was investigated by the FBI.

United States v. Clinton Ogedegbe. On April 15, a grand jury in the Western District of North Carolina returned an indictment against Clinton Ogedegbe, charging him with one count of money laundering conspiracy and one count of concealment money laundering.

According to court documents, from July 2023 through at least February 2024, Ogedegbe and his co-conspirators carried out a scheme to launder the proceeds of romance fraud schemes typically targeting elderly and other vulnerable victims. This case was investigated by the FBI.

United States v. Joseph Kwadwo Badu Boateng also known as “Dada Joe Remix.” On May 30, a grand jury indictment was unsealed in the District of Arizona charging Joseph Boateng also known as “Dada Joe Remix,” a citizen of Ghana, with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering.

According to court documents, from at least 2013 through March 2023, Boateng and his co-conspirators engaged in a romance/inheritance scheme that targeted elderly American victims and others around the world.

The co-conspirators falsely represented that they had gold and jewels and that to release such items, taxes and fees or other costs would be required. Ghanian authorities arrested Boateng on May 28 pursuant to a U.S. request for his extradition. This case was investigated by the FBI.

United States v. 679,981.22 Tether, et al. On June 3, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio announced the filing of a civil forfeiture complaint against 679,981.22 in the Tether cryptocurrency suspected of being fraudulently obtained as part of a romance/investment scam. According to court documents, one victim was targeted via LinkedIn and another victim was targeted though the dating App “Coffee Meets Bagel.”

United States v. John Muriuku Wamuigah. On May 22, Malaysia extradited Kenyan national John Muriuku Wamuigah to stand trial in the District of Connecticut on a wire fraud charge. According to court documents, Mamuiga and others executed a scheme to defraud using business email compromise and romance scams. The scheme involved exploitation of elderly victims through romance scams to serve as unwitting money mules.

United States v. Dwayne Asafo Adjei et al. On June 4, a superseding indictment sought by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Ohio was unsealed. It charges David Onyinye Abuanekwu, Dwayne Asafo Adjei, Nancy Adom, Eric Aidoo, and Nader Wasif with wire fraud and money laundering conspiracies.

According to court documents, from December 2017 through March 2024, the defendants used various wire fraud and romance fraud schemes — often targeting elderly individuals in the United States — to obtain funds from victims by means of false pretenses. The defendants shared in funds obtained from victims with co-conspirators in the Republic of Ghana and elsewhere. This case was investigated by the FBI.

Chelsea’s Mudryk faces 4-year ban following failed drug test

Mykhailo Mudryk is a player of Chelsea Mykhailo Mudryk is a player of Chelsea

Mykhailo Mudryk has officially been charged by the Football Association (FA) for doping offences and could now face a ban of up to four years, according to a report by Matt Law in The Telegraph.

The charge follows the results of a drug test conducted after a Ukraine match in 2024, which detected the banned substance Meldonium in Mudryk’s system.

The Chelsea winger has been provisionally suspended ever since, pending the outcome of his “B” sample, now believed to have also tested positive.

An FA spokesperson confirmed the ruling, stating that the winger had a banned substance in his system.

“We can confirm that Mykhailo Mudryk has been charged with Anti-Doping Rule Violations alleging the presence and/or use of a prohibited substance, in terms of Regulations 3 and 4 of The FA’s Anti-Doping Regulation,” he said.

Mudryk has denied knowingly taking any banned substances. In a statement last December, he described the positive test as “a complete shock” and insisted he had “not done anything wrong.”

Chelsea also supported the player at the time, saying the then 23-year-old maintained that he had never knowingly used any prohibited substances.

The winger, signed from Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2023 for £88.5 million, last played for Chelsea in a UEFA Conference League match against German side Heidenheim on November 28, 2024.

Since then, he has been out of action under provisional suspension.

FA rules require a player to be informed and suspended upon a positive drug test while a full investigation is carried out before a formal charge is issued.

Now that charges have been filed, a disciplinary hearing will follow to determine the length of Mudryk’s ban.

A standard sanction for doping offences involving substances like Meldonium can be as long as four years unless the player proves mitigating factors.

Chelsea could reportedly consider terminating Mudryk’s contract depending on the outcome of the case.

Protection of the public purse is a constitutional mandate and moral obligation — Minority Leader

0

The Minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin has pointed out that the protection of the public purse is a constitutional mandate and moral obligation as such decisions the Parliament of Ghana makes have far reaching consequences for the Ghanaian economy.

According to him the role of parliament to strengthen and build the Ghanaian economy should be timely because it comes at a critical moment when economies around the world are fast changing and ours must navigate increasing financial ecosystem day in day out.

Justin Kodua explains why NPP is holding early presidential primary for 2028 election

0

The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has justified the party’s decision to hold an early presidential primary, saying it will ease internal tensions and help prepare for the 2028 general elections.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr Kodua explained that social media now plays a critical role in shaping perceptions about party matters.

“Unlike some years back, social media has become very active and influential in our internal party matters. When something happens, emotions rise quickly, and it creates confusion and tension,” he said.

He observed that many supporters are more concerned about who becomes the next flagbearer than the broader national elections.

“Right now, if you observe commentary and campaign trends, people are not talking much about national elections but more about who becomes the party’s next presidential candidate. That tells you something,” he noted.

According to him, conducting the presidential primary early will bring unity to the party and help calm nerves.

“Once a leader is chosen, the confusion will reduce. We’ll have someone to rally behind, and someone who can speak boldly on behalf of the party,” he said.

Mr Kodua added that the NPP, now in opposition, needs a strong flagbearer to keep the government on its toes.

“We need a leader who can respond directly to the governing president. We can’t remain silent. Ghanaians must know we are reorganising and ready to win 2028,” he said.

He acknowledged that the party’s 2024 electoral defeat was painful and has prompted members to push for bold reforms.

“Everyone in the party has been hurt by the 2024 loss. That’s why we’re making drastic decisions, including the early presidential primaries, to show we’re serious about bouncing back.”

On the process leading to the new primary date, he said the National Council approved January 31, 2026, after reviewing recommendations from the Constitution Review Committee.

“As for the date and venue, it’s not for the Council to decide. That power lies with the National Council, and they’ve already approved it in line with Article 13(11) of our constitution.”

He revealed that though there were differing opinions on the timing, the decision to hold the primaries early was ultimately accepted.

“There were discussions both for and against the early primary. But in the end, there was no real opposition to the idea of doing it early.”

Meanwhile, a nine-member committee chaired by former Bekwai MP Joseph Osei Owusu has been tasked with planning the July 2025 National Delegates Conference, where other constitutional amendments will be considered.

Ablakwa blames U.S. postal service for visa delivery delays

0

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has attributed delays in the delivery of U.S. visas and passports to logistical challenges on the part of the United States Postal Service (USPS).

He made this revelation on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, June 18, while addressing growing concerns over the late arrival of visa packages, which have sparked anxiety among applicants in recent weeks.

According to the Minister, although the processes for issuing visas and passports have seen significant improvement, the persistent issue lies in the final stage of delivery.

“While the visa and passport issuance process has significantly improved, the primary challenge remains mainly in delays, largely due to logistical failures by the United States Postal Service,” he noted.

Ablakwa explained that approximately 490 duly issued visa packages, mailed on the 6th and 9th of June 2025, were not properly scanned, a development that led to tracking difficulties and widespread concern among applicants.

“In response, we have directly engaged USPS to mitigate future disruptions,” the minister assured Parliament.

He further outlined measures that have been implemented to address the issue. These include the staggering of mail dispatches, limiting them to a maximum of 200 packages per day, to improve tracking and enhance delivery efficiency.

The Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that all Ghanaians receive their travel documents promptly and with minimal stress, adding that monitoring systems are being strengthened to avoid a recurrence of such incidents.

GBA receives letter from British Boxing Board over Sharaf Mahama’s ‘Battle of the Beasts’ event [Audio]

0

The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) has received a formal letter from the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBoC) concerning the recently held boxing event, , which featured rising star Sharaf Mahama.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s , the GBA’s Director of Communications, Mohammed Amin Lamptey, hinted that the correspondence highlighted regulatory concerns and called for swift action from both the Minister of Youth and Sports and the National Sports Authority (NSA) to tighten oversight on boxing promotions in the country.

The event drew significant attention, showcasing headline bouts such as Jacob “The Beast” Dickson facing Andrew Tabiti for the WBO Africa Bridgerweight title, and Daniel Selassie Gorsh taking on Theo Allotey in the African Bantamweight division.

Adding to the spectacle were international boxing icons Anthony Joshua and Amir Khan, whose presence helped elevate the event’s profile on the global stage.

In light of the BBBoC’s concerns, the GBA is expected to work closely with the Sports Ministry and the NSA to address any regulatory gaps and ensure future boxing events adhere to international standards.

Three Ghanaians – Samuel Kwadwo Osei (popularly known as Tuga), Fred Brobbey Awuah, and Derrick Nii Ashitey – have been indicted by a court in the United States for engaging in identity theft and money laundering.

The Ghanaians were indicted alongside Nigerian computer programmer, Chinemezu Sapphire Egemasi, widely referred to as the “tech queen” of Nigeria.

The four were arrested in April 2025 for orchestrating internet fraud schemes and laundering illicit funds between September 2021 and February 2023.

According to court documents seen by GhanaWeb, the syndicate targeted public agencies across the United States, including the city government of Kentucky.

They deployed phishing campaigns and spoofed websites to steal employee login credentials and rerouted public funds into fraudulent bank accounts.

The documents revealed that the gang stole millions of dollars from the city of Kentucky, with Egemasi playing a key role by designing and registering fake websites that mimicked official US government portals in order to harvest sensitive data.

Due to the severity of the offences, the court ordered the forfeiture of all properties belonging to the accused persons in the US.

“By virtue of the commission of the offences alleged in Counts One and Three of the Indictment, SAMUEL KWADWO OSEI, CHINEMEZU SAPPHIRE EGEMASI, and DERRICK NII ASHITEY shall forfeit to the United States any and all property, real or personal, which constitutes or is derived from proceeds traceable to the violations of 18 U.S.C. § 1349 or 18 U.S.C. § 1028A. Any and all interest that SAMUEL KWADWO OSEI, CHINEMEZU SAPPHIRE EGEMASI, and DERRICK NII ASHITEY have in this property is vested in and forfeited to the United States pursuant to 18 U.S.C. § 981(a)(1)(C) and 28 U.S.C. § 2461.

“By virtue of the commission of the offence alleged in Count Two of this Indictment, SAMUEL KWADWO OSEI, DERRICK NII ASHITEY, and FRED BROBBEY AWUAH shall forfeit to the United States, any and all property, real or personal, involved in the violation of 18 U.S.C. § 1956 and any property traceable to such property. Any and all interest that SAMUEL KWADWO OSEI, DERRICK NII ASHITEY, and FRED BROBBEY AWUAH have in this property is vested in and forfeited to the United States pursuant to 18 U.S.C. § 982(a)(1),” the court document read in part.

Adutwum declares intent to run for NPP 2028 flagbearership race

0

Dr. Osei Yaw Adutwum, Minister of Education

Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe and former Minister for Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, has officially expressed his intention to contest for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer position for the 2028 election.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, June 18, Dr Adutwum announced that he would join the race once the party officially opens nominations.

“With humility, conviction, and a resolute heart, I, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, declare my intent to run for the flagbearership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), should nominations be officially opened by the party,” he stated.

Dr Adutwum, who is known for his work in the education sector, becomes one of the latest senior members of the NPP to openly show interest in leading the party into the 2028 general elections.

Dr Bawumia, who served as Vice President under the Akufo-Addo administration, is seen by many as a frontrunner, having previously contested and won the party’s 2023 flagbearer race. However, other influential figures, including Kennedy Agyapong and Bryan Acheampong, among others, are also lacing their boots to join the race.

This announcement by Dr Adutwum comes barely a day after the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) officially scheduled its presidential primary for Saturday, 31st January 2026.

This has set the stage for a decisive contest to elect the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.

Ghanaian E-bike Company Showcases Models To UN Delegation

A participant taking a ride on the e-bike

Wahu Mobility hosted a visit from the United Nations (UN) and partners on Friday, June 13, 2025, to demonstrate the e-bikes the company plans to roll-out across Ghana and Africa.

The company hosted Sustainable Energy for All, an independent organisation aiming to accelerate the transition to renewable energy resources in emerging and developing countries, and the UN in Ghana.

A showcase was given for the new e-bike, as well as testimonials from users and the bike’s engineers.

The visit was in partnership with the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC), which aims to make Ghana the most attractive option for external investment in Africa, and highlighted how a transition to low-carbon transportation services can simultaneously produce employment opportunities.

Wahu Mobility are the first e-bike manufacturer based in Ghana, and while it plans to release its bikes to the public in the future, their e-bikes are already used by services such as Bolt.

The company is currently looking for more businesses to partner with to expand its e-bike roll-out.

Sustainable Energy for All and the UN in Ghana’s visit comes as Ghana tries to reduce its carbon emissions to mitigate the risks of climate change.

Ghana’s annual emissions (not accounting for the emissions of traded goods into the country) peaked in 2021 with 20.55 million tonnes of CO2, but this figure decreased in 2022 and 2023 – a figure for 2024 has yet to be calculated.

Wahu Mobility’s facility is an example of how Ghana’s Energy Transition and Investment Plan, which aims to make Ghana net-zero by 2060 and make the country’s industrial development more sustainable, is providing private investment in homegrown technology to solve the problems posed by climate change.

The e-bike project was praised by CEO and Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Sustainable Energy for All, and Co-Chair of UN-Energy, Damilola Ogunbiyi, who said at the event, “it demonstrates the practical value of Ghana’s Energy Transition and Investment Plan, the world-class roadmap for the country’s net zero ambitions.”

He also said that, “Ghana has taken an economy-wide approach to its decarbonisation journey, with transport electrification driving 40% of emissions reduction required. This transition is not just about transitioning energy and the transport sector; it is about revolutionising how people live, move and work in a greener economy.”

I get sick and tired of people telling me not to respond to trash

MzGee says she's sick of the toxic behaviour of online users who insult her under her content MzGee says she’s sick of the toxic behaviour of online users who insult her under her content

Media personality MzGee has lashed out at critics who constantly urge her to ignore negative comments on social media, insisting that some people simply “need to be put in their place.”

Speaking on her Gee O’clock show, the celebrated broadcaster expressed her frustration over the toxic behavior of some online users who post insulting or condescending remarks under her content, only to turn around and police her reactions.

“I get sick and tired of people coming and saying, ‘leave them, you shouldn’t respond.’ Like sometimes, people need to be put in their place,” MzGee fumed.

She questioned why anyone would follow personalities they do not like just to hurl insults at them, describing it as a deeply disturbing trend.

“How do you take your own phone, buy data, go online, and follow people you don’t even like, just to post trash? How do you even breathe?” she asked in disbelief.

MzGee explained that her presence on social media is not only for personal engagement but also part of her professional responsibility as an entertainment journalist.

She follows celebrities and entertainment figures to monitor trends, gather content, and stay informed, not because she always supports or agrees with them.

She took issue with those who demand that public figures must “be the bigger person” and endure online abuse in silence. To her, respect is reciprocal, and silence is not always the best response.

“I’m somebody people know. That doesn’t mean I don’t have blood flowing through my veins. If you come and write trash on my page, be prepared, I will give it to you back-to-back,” she warned.

MzGee admitted that while she blocks offensive users, many return with ghost accounts to continue their harassment. For her, responding directly is sometimes necessary to shut down toxicity before it escalates.

“When you don’t respond, others follow the trash. Sometimes I just feel like telling them my piece of mind. I don’t always want to be the bigger person. I’m sorry,” she added.

MzGee further called out those who claim to be “disappointed” in her responses.

“Take your disappointments elsewhere. If you don’t want me responding, stop coming on my page with trash.”

Fred Kwarteng made $1.8m per year from courier services alone – Ablakwa

0

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Minister of Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Minister of Foreign Affairs

Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has disclosed startling findings in the ongoing investigation into alleged financial misconduct at Ghana’s Embassy in Washington, D.C.

According to the Minister, a key suspect in the scandal, Fred Kwarteng, is believed to have earned a staggering $4.8 million annually while serving at the embassy.

Of this amount, $1.8 million reportedly came from courier service operations alone.

“Mr. Speaker, investigations conducted by the top management of our ministry revealed that GTC dispatched between 150 and 350 visas and passports daily. On average, about 250 visas and passports were dispatched per day.

“Right Honorable Speaker, this implies that GTC dispatched approximately 62,500 visas and passports annually. Mr. Fred Kwarteng was therefore raking in an estimated $1.8 million each year from courier services alone.

“Mr. Speaker, you can comprehend the substantial sum he earned annually when you add the fees he charged, between $60 and $100, for assisting applicants in completing their visa and passport forms. By a conservative analysis, he made about $4.8 million annually from this unlawful enterprise,” Ablakwa disclosed this on the floor of Parliament on June 18, 2025.

Meanwhile, Parliament is pressing for a full-scale investigation and possible legal action to address the alleged abuse of public office and state resources.

The sector minister reiterated that his ministry remains committed to ensuring transparency and restoring integrity across Ghana’s diplomatic missions.

Mind your speech! – Popular Ghanaian boxers fire Okatakyie Afrifa for ‘attacking’ Sharaf Mahama

0

L-R: Okatakyie Afrifa, Bukom Bukom Banku and Sharaf Mahama L-R: Okatakyie Afrifa, Bukom Bukom Banku and Sharaf Mahama

Some renowned Ghanaian boxers have slammed media personality, Okatakyie Afrifa for questioning the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Legacy Rise Sport, Sharaf Mahama’s source of income.

Following the conclusion of the ‘Battle of the Beasts’ boxing event, Afrifa questioned Sharaf on where he got the funds to organise such a huge boxing event in the country.

The media personality asserted that the fact that global boxing stars like Anthony Joshua and Amir Khan were involved is an indication that a lot of money was invested, which raises eyebrows.

In reaction to this, some prominent Ghanaian boxers have lambasted Afrifa for stooping so low to make such uncouth remarks that undermine the Legacy Rise Sport CEO’s efforts.

Former African champion, Bukom Banku, cautioned Afrifa to be wary of his utterances, otherwise he might be jailed.

“You are questioning Sharaf Mahama’s source of income to organise the event. His father is a rich man, or you don’t know? He is also a prominent figure but people use their own pocket money. So, mind your speech and shut up, else one day you will go to jail,” he said in a TikTok video.

Renowned boxer Michael ‘Ayittey Powers’ Okine fumed over Okatakyie’s comment and urged Sharaf Mahama to remain focused.

“Don’t come and talk about what you don’t know. What wrong did Sharaf do? If someone does something good, he deserves praise. There are a lot of potential boxers who need promotion, but some of us can’t do it to Sharaf’s level.

“Footballers have been investing in football, but nothing has come out of it, so we need to encourage him, not attack him,” he stated in a video shared on TikTok.

Former WBO Africa Lightweight champion, Emmanuel Tagoe, well known as ‘Game Boy’, warned Afrifa to stay away from boxing issues or face consequences.

“If you have a personal issue with his father, don’t bring boxing into it. If you are a fool, we are madder than you. I am warning you to stay away from boxing issues. We hate that NDC, NPP propaganda. If not, we the boxers will deal with you personally,” he said.

“Bawumia’s ‘Appetite for Control’ Behind Early NPP Flagbearer Election” – Hamza Alleges

0

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communications team, Hamza Suhuyini, has raised concerns over the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) decision to hold the presidential flagbearer election ahead of the 2028 general elections as per reports from ModernGhana on Wednesday, June 18, 2025.

The NPP set January 31, 2026, as the election date, which Hamza believes serves a more calculated purpose than party reform.

During an appearance on Accra-based Channel One TV, Hamza argued that the early election is not about revitalizing the party but about Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s desire to assert control.

“The motivation behind the early congress is driven by the appetite for control by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and his clique,” he stated.

He also warned the former Vice President against repeating past mistakes, pointing to allegations that internal processes in the NPP were previously manipulated to favour him.

“He must not allow these guys to destroy the responsibility the party will be entrusting upon him to reform, even before he starts that agenda,” Hamza advised, offering what he described as “harmless advice” to Bawumia and his campaign team.

While Hamza criticized the NPP’s internal strategies, he also expressed little surprise at the likelihood of Bawumia winning the party’s flagbearer election.

“I would be surprised if they elect anyone other than Dr. Bawumia as their flagbearer,” he said, acknowledging that Bawumia, having led the party in the 2024 general elections, remains the strongest contender for 2028.

NPP justifies early flagbearer election, says Ghana needs a strong opposition leader now

0

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has defended its decision to elect a presidential candidate more than two years ahead of the 2028 general elections, arguing that the country urgently needs a strong opposition leader to check the actions of the Mahama-led administration.

Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Wednesday, 18th June, the Deputy General Secretary of the NPP, Haruna Mohammed, said the party’s decision to hold its flagbearer election on 31st January 2026 was based on broad internal consultations and the recommendation of its constitutional amendment committee.

“There was a very strong report from the constitutional amendment committee,” Mr Mohammed explained. “It said that based on the overwhelming proposal from party members and extensive stakeholder engagement, they held that position.”

He maintained that the current political climate demands a clear and visible opposition leader who can provide strong leadership, speak for the people, and counter what he described as the excesses of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.

“Looking at the environment, the conditions available to us clearly indicate that we need to have an opposition leader at this point in time to be able to hold the country to a better place,” he said.

Mr Mohammed accused the government of engaging in “unlawful” practices and reneging on key obligations, particularly the failure to implement agreed conditions of service for nurses.

“The government is deciding that they want to do things that are very unlawful, and we think that we need to check them,” he stated. “That’s why nurses are very uncomfortable — even when the documentation of their conditions of service has been completed, the government has abandoned it.”

He also criticised what he termed a growing trend of public “persecution” in the media rather than legal prosecution through the courts.

“Ghanaians are also seeing that instead of us going to court to prosecute, we are persecuting in the media, and I think that it is not good for us,” he said.

The Deputy General Secretary added that electing a flagbearer early would give the NPP ample time to articulate its vision, scrutinise government policies, and present itself as a credible alternative to the current administration.

NPP threatens series of actions over Ablekuma North Standoff

0

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has launched a scathing attack on the Ghana Police Service and the Mahama-led government, accusing them of deliberately frustrating the Electoral Commission’s efforts to conclude the collation of parliamentary results in the hotly contested Ablekuma North Constituency.

In a statement issued after a National Council meeting, the party alleged that the Ghana Police, acting under the directives of the Minister for the Interior and the Attorney General, have blatantly defied a High Court order requiring them to provide security for the EC to finalise the collation of results from three outstanding polling stations.

“The Electoral Commission has confirmed that there is no court process restraining them from completing the collation and declaring the results,” the statement said, adding “Yet the Police, in clear contempt of court, are refusing to act—simply because they know the NDC has lost the seat.”

The NPP accused President John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of using the Police to suppress the democratic will of the people of Ablekuma North by stalling the process and denying them parliamentary representation.

“The only reason Mahama and his NDC are not allowing the Police to provide security is because they know they have lost. This is a calculated attempt to use state institutions to frustrate the process and hold the people of Ablekuma North hostage,” the party charged.

Describing the situation as a grave threat to democratic governance, the NPP vowed to launch a series of nationwide actions in the coming days to compel the authorities to allow the EC to complete the process without interference.

“We wish to serve notice that we shall, in the coming days, roll out a series of actions to get the powers that be to uphold the democratic rights of the people of Ablekuma North,” the party declared.

Future MMDCEs likely to be elected, current appointees could be last – Mahama

0

President John Dramani Mahama has revealed that future Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) may no longer be appointed, but rather elected, in line with growing public demand for greater accountability in local governance.

Addressing participants at an orientation and training programme organised for MMDCEs on Wednesday, June 18, the President noted that the current system of appointing MMDCEs could soon be replaced, depending on the outcome of the work of the Constitution Review Committee.

According to him, one of the key recommendations emerging from the Committee’s nationwide consultations is the introduction of elections for MMDCEs. He said the Committee is expected to present its final report in August 2025.

“MMDCEs, you may be the last batch of MMDCEs appointed. The National Review committee is going round and will present its recommendation in August this year, and one of the major items that has come up is the election of the MMDCEs. There is no doubt that Ghanaians want the MMDCEs elected. Those who succeed you might have to go through elections,” he stated.

He further encouraged the MMDCEs to collaborate with traditional leaders, religious institutions, and civil society organisations to rebuild trust between the government and the citizens at the grassroots level.

“I therefore urge you to work with the chiefs and the religious bodies in the district and civil society to restore the social contracts with our people. The legitimacy and authority of the state must be found not only in law but in the experience of our people,” he said.

TotalEnergies Ghana Limited embarks on educational tour for Odawna mechanics

0

TotalEnergies Ghana Limited has embarked on an educational tour for mechanics in the Odawna car repair enclave.

The event brought together auto technicians from the area for an educational session on a wide range of topics.

The engagement began with a brief safety talk emphasising the importance of using personal protective equipment (PPE) and the proper disposal of contaminated engine oil.

The event also aimed to increase awareness and visibility of TotalEnergies’ Quartz and Rubia engine oils, highlighting the quality and technical benefits of the respective product ranges. Another key objective was to strengthen relationships with mechanic associations.

The well-attended program featured former Ghana international and TotalEnergies brand ambassador, Stephen Appiah.

In an interview, Deputy Lubricants Manager Kenneth Tupra described the feedback from participants as encouraging.

“One of our key user demographics is mechanics. Though they may be indirect users, they play a very vital role because they recommend lubricants to end users. We want to bridge the knowledge gap and enhance their understanding of the technical aspects of lubricant choices. TotalEnergies Lubricants are number one when it comes to quality and longevity, and that is why we’ve engaged the mechanics this morning,” he said.

“We chose the Odawna enclave because it is one of the key mechanic hubs in Accra. There are several mechanic groups here, and it was important to bring them together in one place. We also plan to engage mechanics in Ashaiman, and in the coming months, we’ll extend this initiative to Kumasi and Takoradi.”

Also present was influencer and dancer Champion Rollie, who thrilled participants with an energetic dance session that excited the gathered crowd.

Participants received gifts and TotalEnergies-branded souvenirs, adding to the enthusiasm of the day.

Religious identity doesn’t win elections in Ghana; political strategy does

Over three decades into Ghana’s Fourth Republic, one truth continues to emerge with remarkable consistency: religious identity has little to no bearing on electoral outcomes.

Despite the deep religiosity of Ghanaian society, elections have been won and lost not on the basis of faith, but on the strength of political strategy, party machinery, and the competence or charisma of the candidates involved.

A careful analysis of Ghana’s presidential elections from 1992 to 2024 confirms this. While religious balance on presidential tickets has often been cited as a sign of national inclusivity, it has never been the decisive factor in determining victory at the polls.

Let’s consider the record.

The NPP’s Religious Inclusion – A Case Study in Strategy, Not Sentiment

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has a proven history of acknowledging Ghana’s religious diversity; consistently fielding Muslim running mates or candidates: Alhaji Roland Issifu Alhassan in 1992, Alhaji Aliu Mahama in 2000 and 2004, and Dr Mahamudu Bawumia from 2008 through 2024. In fact, in 2024, the NPP made history by presenting the first Muslim presidential candidate of a major party; Dr. Bawumia.

Despite this inclusive record, the NPP didn’t win in 1992, 1996, 2008, or 2012. Clearly, having a Muslim on the ticket did not translate into guaranteed victory, just as not having one didn’t spell defeat for other parties.

Meanwhile, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which has largely fielded Christian-Christian tickets across elections, has won multiple times: in 1992, 1996, 2008, 2012, and 2024. In 2004, the NDC made its only attempt at a Christian-Muslim ticket with Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni as vice-presidential candidate, and still lost.

This trend underscores a core reality: religious balancing, though symbolically important, does not determine who becomes president in Ghana.

What Actually Wins Elections in Ghana? Strategy

What then determines electoral victory? The answer is clear: political tactics, strategic communication, and strong party organisation. Whether it is a strong party presenting a strong candidate or a strong party carrying a weaker candidate, it is political strategy, not religious appeal, that carries the day.

In 2000, the NPP presented John Agyekum Kufuor, widely seen as an experienced, likeable figure with a disciplined team behind him. The NPP was ascending, organised, and unified. Result: Victory.

In 2008, the NDC’s candidate, Prof John Evans Atta Mills, rode on public dissatisfaction with the ruling NPP and executed a well-coordinated campaign. Result: Victory.

In 2016, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo returned with a sharpened message, grassroots momentum, and a tired incumbent party in disarray. Result: A landslide victory for the NPP, not because of any religious factor, but due to strategic dominance.

In 2024, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s historic candidacy as a Muslim presidential hopeful for the NPP will test not Ghana’s religious sentiment, but rather the party’s ability to present a coherent message, respond to the public mood, and mobilise effectively. If the NPP had won, it wouldn’t have been because Dr Bawumia is Muslim, but because they ran the better campaign. The result was a historic defeat.

Religious Sentiment vs Political Reality

Ghanaians vote on competence, relatability, message, and party loyalty; not on the religion of a candidate. The political arena in Ghana is not tribalistic or sectarian in the way some other democracies have experienced. While religion is a powerful personal and social force in Ghana, it does not drive electoral behavior in any significant way.

In fact, parties that have tried to exploit religious divisions have often faced backlash from voters who cherish national unity over sectarian politics.

Conclusion: It’s Strategy, Not Sect

From 1992 to 2024, Ghanaian elections have consistently shown that what matters is not who prays where, but who has the better plan, message, and organisation. Whether it’s a Christian-Christian ticket or a Muslim-Christian pairing, victory at the polls has always gone to those who mastered the game of political tactics.

Religious inclusion remains important for national unity and symbolic representation, but when it comes to winning elections in Ghana, strategy reigns supreme.

Mahama Pledges ₵25 Million for MMDAs This Year

President John Mahama

PRESIDENT JOHN Dramani Mahama has pledged to resource every Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assembly (MMDA) in Ghana with not less than $25 million this year.

The funding, according to the President, aims at ensuring that local governments are properly resourced to meet the development needs of their respective communities.

Speaking at the orientation of the MMDCEs in Accra, President Mahama reaffirmed the government’s strong commitment to decentralised development and the crucial role of local authorities in national progress.

“This year, every assembly from the largest to the smallest will receive not less than GH₵25 million,” he assured.

According to the President, this allocation aligns with the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) 2024 manifesto, which prioritizes local governance at the centre of Ghana’s development agenda.

“The NDC manifesto outlines a bold and people-centred agenda that puts local government at the heart of national development. You are the first line of the economy,” he stated.

President Mahama further highlighted that the 2025 budget statement reflects this priority by committing 80 per cent of the District Assemblies’ Common Fund to MMDAs.

He also pointed to major government programmes such as the Clean Up Ghana campaign, Adumawura, the National Apprenticeship Programme, Mahama Cares, and Feed Ghana.

These, he said, are not abstract policies but practical initiatives that require strong coordination and effective leadership at the district level to be successfully implemented.

He urged district leaders to apply the resources in line with local priorities and medium-term development plans, saying, “These funds must reflect the needs of your people and be used to deliver real development outcomes.” he added.

Fantana attributed it to divine favour: “It was by the grace of God.”

The host then followed up by asking whether she had given her decision any serious thought before joining the show, especially considering her status as a public figure and the public profile of her mother, who comes from a prominent Ghanaian family.

Ghanaian midfielder Daniel-Kofi Kyereh has ignited fresh hopes of a long-awaited return to football after posting a cryptic but inspiring update on social media, one that fans believe marks the final stretch of his gruelling a two-year injury nightmare.

The 29-year-old posted a photo of himself with a football at his feet alongside a motivational message board that read “Play The Game.”

Though no words were directly attributed to Kyereh, the symbolism was clear, the former St. Pauli and current Freiburg man is edging ever closer to his comeback.

According to his representatives, Kyereh is currently undergoing intense preparation for his return, training rigorously in Barcelona with full focus and determination.

It’s the latest encouraging sign in what has been a long and challenging road back to full fitness.

Kyereh has been sidelined since February 2023 after suffering a devastating anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during training with SC Freiburg.

The injury ruled him out of the entire 2023/24 Bundesliga season, despite initial hopes of a late-season return.

He also missed several key national team assignments, including Ghana’s AFCON 2023 campaign and subsequent World Cup qualifiers.

Prior to the setback, Kyereh was beginning to establish himself in Freiburg’s midfield after joining the club in July 2022.

He made 12 appearances and scored twice in his debut season, quickly endearing himself to fans with his technical ability and composure on the ball.

At international level, the creative midfielder was part of Ghana’s squad at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, but has not featured for the Black Stars since then due to his long-term injury.

In a video shared by Citi FM’s X account on June 18, 2025, the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, made the announcement during the inauguration of a new chair for technical and vocational education.

Ghana needs to go back to Gen. Acheampong’s polices – Prof. Agyeman Duah

0

The CEO of the J.A. Kufour Foundation, Prof. Baffour Agyeman-Duah, has called on Ghanaian leaders to bring back some of the key policies of General Ignatius Kutu Acheampong that were very beneficial to Ghana’s economy.

Prof. Agyeman-Duah made these comments in a video paying tribute to General Acheampong, the Head of State of Ghana between January 1972 and July 1978, 46 years on from his passing.

Lamenting over the foreign control of Ghana’s economy and the dependence on food imports, Prof. Agyeman-Duah specifically cited General Acheampong’s ‘Operation Feed Yourself’ and the policy to make Ghanaians take control of the commanding heights of the economy as policies that would have prevented the aforementioned problems.

“If we had sustained, for instance, the program to feed ourselves, we would not be importing tomatoes from Burkina Faso today. If we had continued ‘Operation Feed Yourself’, the cost of food in Ghana would have been lower than we have today. So, I think these were important programs that we should have sustained through the years.”, he stated.

To further buttress his point, he added, “we have been incapable of feeding ourselves and, therefore, we are spending a large chunk of our resources importing basic food items that we can otherwise produce here.”

“All this has added up to the indebtedness and, I think, if we were to revert to some of the policies of Acheampong, especially in food production. Taking [control] of the commanding heights of the economy. I think, by now, this country would have been far better off than we have today.”

“So, I think it is important for us to remember that even though he was a military leader, certain policies he initiated, we should be proud of them and find a way to revert to those policies in order to build this country the way it ought to be”, Prof. Agyeman-Duah went on to say in a rallying call to Ghanaian leaders.

Small-Scale Miners On Track To Meet GoldBod Deadline – Association

0

Michael Kwadwo Peprah

The Concerned Small Scale Miners Association says it’s making progress toward meeting the June 21 deadline set by the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) for compliance with the new gold trading license regime.

After requesting an extension due to documentation delays, GoldBod granted a final grace period ending June 21, with no further extensions allowed.

Association President Michael Kwadwo Peprah told Citi News that the situation has improved significantly.

“Initially, we had challenges with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The process to acquire a certificate used to take over a week, which made it difficult to meet the timeline. But now, additional offices have been established, including at the district level, to support the existing EPA structures. As a result, obtaining clearances for gold trading licenses has become much smoother,” he said.

He noted that the GoldBod licensing process is now being prioritised by the relevant state institutions, accelerating the regularisation of small-scale miners across the country.

The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) early served notice that all gold dealer licences previously issued by the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC) or the Minister responsible for Mines—excluding those granted to large-scale mining companies—are no longer valid.

The statement reminded all that GoldBod has officially been established as the sole entity responsible for the purchase, sale, assaying, and export of all gold produced by the Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) sector in Ghana.

It further stated that Ghanaians or wholly Ghanaian-owned entities whose licences have expired, or who wish to enter the gold trade legally, are advised to apply for new licences under the Ghana Gold Board Act beginning Tuesday, 22nd April 2025.

Following the announcement, the Small Scale Miners Association, Ghana, appealed to the Ghana Goldbod for an extension of the deadline for submitting application documents for the Gold Buyer License.

In a letter addressed to Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Goldbod, Sammy Gyamfi, the association requested that the deadline – originally set to close on Wednesday, May 21, 2025 – be extended by one additional month which was granted.

According to the association, many of its members have faced significant challenges compiling the required documentation within the stipulated timeframe. These include Tax Clearance Certificates, Business Operating Permits, Environmental Protection Permits, SSNIT Clearance Certificates, GRA Certificates, police reports, and other regulatory documents.

‘The industry isn’t dead; we’re just not supporting our own’ – Shirley Frimpong Manso

0

Ghanaian film director and writer Shirley Frimpong Manso has dismissed claims that Ghana’s film industry is dead.

She has insisted that the real issue lies in the lack of local support.

Speaking in an interview with Doreen Avio on Hitz FM’s Daybreak Hitz on June 18, 2025, Shirley highlighted the stark contrast between Ghana’s film industry and Nigeria’s booming Nollywood scene.

“I don’t want to hear that it’s dead, because it’s not. People call it dead because the progress we expected over the years hasn’t happened. But that doesn’t mean there’s no potential,” she said.

According to Shirley, Nigeria’s success story is largely due to intentional investment and infrastructure development.

“Nigerians made a decision to invest in film as an art form that creates jobs, drives business, and makes an impact. They made funding available, built cinemas, and expanded them. That’s why they’re doing better than us,” she said.

She went on to emphasize that Ghana has all the right ingredients for a thriving film industry, adding that the country has talented storytellers, skilled actors, and compelling narratives, but lacks prioritization of the arts.

“We are good storytellers. We have great actors. What’s missing is that we don’t place enough importance on film and the creative arts. That’s where our problem lies,” she stated.

Shirley also narrated how being a Ghanaian filmmaker has opened doors for her internationally, further proving the influence Ghanaian cinema can have beyond its borders.

“A lot of the opportunities I get abroad come simply because I’m a Ghanaian filmmaker. That shows the kind of impact our films can create. The industry isn’t dead, we can do much better,” she maintained.

She concluded by urging both the private sector and the media to play a greater role in pushing the industry forward, noting that the responsibility doesn’t lie solely with the government.

“We’ve produced films that examine critical societal issues. The industry needs everyone; government, private investors. She has asked the media, to recognize its value and offer the support it truly deserves,” she added.

The CEO of Freight Consult, Alhaji Abdulai Issaka Pangasur, has stepped up once again for Ghanaian boxing, rewarding the Black Rockets with a cash donation of GH¢10,000 for their triple gold medal haul at the 2025 African Youth Boxing Championships in Guinea.

In a show of leadership and passion for youth development, the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF) board member hosted the triumphant trio — Mathias Ashitey, George Dowuona and Desmond Pappoe — at his Airport Residential office, where he applauded their heroics and pledged continued support ahead of the Youth Olympic Games qualifiers in Angola this December.

“You’ve done exceptionally well — Ghana is proud of you,” Alhaji Pangasur told the boxers. “You are the future of our sport. Now is the time to get back to the gym because only hard work, discipline and focus will take you further. I expect many of you to qualify for the Youth Olympics and Freight Consult will back you all the way.”

Led by a GBF delegation, including the Vice-President, Dauda Fuseni, Solomon Otoo Lartey 2nd (Vice-President), Mustapha Nettey (Treasurer) and national coaches Charles Quartey and Joseph Martey, the team presented Alhaji Pangasur with their gold medals and third-place trophy in appreciation of his continued support.

This is not the first time Alhaji Pangasur has backed Ghana’s amateur boxing cause.

Through Freight Consult, he has also extended support to the senior national team, the Black Bombers and the women’s side, Black Hitters, helping boost preparations for major international events.

On behalf of the GBF, Mr Fuseni commended the gesture and made a passionate appeal for more individuals and corporate institutions to emulate Alhaji Pangasur’s example.

“With the Youth Olympics, the 2026 Commonwealth Games and even the 2028 Olympics in sight, boxing needs all the support it can get,” he said. “The government must also invest more in our athletes before major competitions to ensure we compete at the highest level.”

Agric Minister Decries $2 Billion Poultry Imports

0

Eric Opoku

Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has raised an alarm over the country’s staggering annual expenditure of more than $2 billion on imported poultry products, describing the trend as economically unsustainable and a major setback to national development.

During a courtesy visit to the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi, Mr. Opoku who doubles as the Member of Parliament for Asunafo South, informed the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, that the country imports over 95% of its poultry needs, a dependency he believes must be urgently reversed.

He also emphasised the urgent need to revamp local poultry farming as a strategic step toward reducing poultry imports, saving foreign exchange, and promoting self-sufficiency.

“Our reliance on imported chicken is draining our economy,” the Minister stated. “We must empower our farmers to meet domestic demand and reclaim our place as a self-reliant nation.”

Cultivating the Next Generation of Farmers

As part of efforts to promote agricultural interest among the youth, the Minister announced a nationwide initiative to encourage farming in schools—from the basic to the tertiary level. Schools that excel in agricultural activities, he said, will be publicly recognised and rewarded to inspire healthy competition and broader participation.

“This is not just about food production,” Mr. Opoku explained. “It’s about changing mindsets and raising a generation that sees farming as a noble and profitable venture.”

Nkoko Nketenkete Project

The Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the “Nkoko Nketenkete” project, a flagship initiative aimed at significantly boosting local poultry production. The project is expected to provide critical support to farmers, create thousands of jobs, and drastically cut down on poultry imports.

In furtherance of the poultry agenda, Mr. Opoku visited A2 Agro Allied, a local firm that produces poultry feed. The company has pledged to partner with Ghanaian farmers to grow key feed ingredients such as maize and soybeans.

“This collaboration between industry and agriculture is exactly what we need,” said the Minister. “It ensures that our poultry sector has the local inputs required to thrive without depending on imports.”

Feed Ghana Programme: A Broader Vision

All these efforts fall under the broader “Feed Ghana Programme,” a comprehensive initiative designed to transform the nation’s agricultural sector. The programme focuses on strengthening food systems, increasing crop and livestock production, establishing farmers’ service centers, and integrating technology into farming practices.

With the full implementation of these programmes, the government aims to position agriculture as a central pillar of the country’s economy, capable of generating jobs, reducing imports, and ensuring national food security.

Mr. Opoku’s bold call to action underscores the need for collective national effort—from policymakers and traditional leaders to schools, farmers, and private enterprises—to secure Ghana’s food future and strengthen its economic resilience.
