Erling Haaland wins both young player of the season & EPL player of the season award

In his first season with Manchester City, Erling Haaland became the first player in history to win both the Premier League Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year awards.

The Norwegian broke the record for the most goals in a Premier League season by 29 years after scoring 36 league goals in just 35 matches. In addition to helping City win the Premier League for a third straight year and advance to the FA Cup and Champions League finals in June, he has also provided eight assists. Haaland’s 44 total goals-related contributions are tied for the most all-time, breaking the mark set by Thierry Henry, a former Arsenal forward, in the 2002–03 campaign.

The trophy has now been won by a City player for four straight years, with Ruben Dias winning it in 2020–21 and Kevin De Bruyne in 2019–20 and 2021/22. In 2011–12, Vincent Kompany also received the honour. De Bruyne received a second nomination for the trophy this year after maintaining his lead in the assists leaderboard with 16 overall so far.

The short list also included the Arsenal teammates Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard, Marcus Rashford of Manchester United, Harry Kane of Tottenham, and Kieran Trippier of Newcastle.

With more than 80% of the vote, Haaland has already won the 2023 Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year award. Additionally, he is a candidate for the PFA Player of the Season honour.
