LaLiga: Barcelona in race against time; fans worried

Agency Report

Barcelona are in a race against time to register their new signings for the opening weekend of the LaLiga season.

When Rayo Vallecano come to town on Saturday night, it is entirely plausible that none of the big-money transfers the Catalans worked so hard to bring in this summer will be eligible to play.

LaLiga will only let Barcelona register Robert Lewandowski, Andreas Christensen, Jules Kounde, Franck Kessie and Raphinha once they are satisfied that the club adheres to its strict salary cap structure.

Furthermore, the contract renewals of Ousmane Dembele and Sergi Roberto are also not yet registered.

Each club’s wage allowance is measured against its revenue, hence the selling of off various assets, including future TV rights, as financial ‘levers’.

In theory, between the fourth economic lever and the two salary adjustments they have in hand with Sergio Busquets and Gerard Pique, it should be enough.

The fact is that the date for registration is approaching and the issue is still not resolved.

Although the club are calm, it is not surprising that fans are beginning to be nervous about the situation.

They understand that they are on time, in spite of this atmosphere of haste. Between Thursday and Friday there should be news on the matter.

The club hope to announce the registration of all players. Anything less would indicate a major crisis within the Camp Nou.

And the fact is that, as happened last year, if an extreme case were to occur, which is not even contemplated by the club, the players who are not registered once the market is closed, could be released.
