Many Nigerians are waiting for Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the National Leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), to publicly declare his intention to run for President.

Tinubu, according to Babatunde Fashola, Minister of Works and Housing, may do so in January. However, there are reports that Tinubu informed President Muhammadu Buhari of his alleged presidential ambitions in 2023. Tinubu would have thought it was proper to inform Buhari ahead of others since the President is a friend and political ally who could be of assistance to him.
Tinubu’s response to Buhari
Tinubu was reportedly told by the President to go ahead. This was his straightforward response. While Go Ahead is not a terrible film, it does not reveal or explain anything in terms of politics or the question of sponsorship.

It’s evident from Buhari’s statement that he hasn’t decided whether or not to support Tinubu. He merely responds with a neutral tone. Tinubu, or anyone else, cannot rely on Buhari’s promise to support or oppose his presidential bid.It implies that he may work his way out to determine whether or not he will succeed.

This situation may be better appreciated if Buhari’s previous position on the 2023 Presidential election is revisited. It should be noted that Buhari has stated unequivocally that he has no preferred successor. In fact, he stated unequivocally that he is unconcerned about who will succeed him as President. With that, he attempted to separate himself from the politics of determining who will be the APC presidential candidate and the ensuing controversy.

While some may believe Buhari would support Tinubu on the matter, it appears that the President is adamant about not interfering in the election of the next President, as he promised. However, it remains to be seen how Buhari will genuinely be apathetic and distant on this crucial question of who will succeed before 2023. For political reasons, many governors and presidents labour hard to develop their successors. It would be beneficial if Buhari could change the narrative in Nigeria. However, since 2023 politics dominates many discussions in Nigeria, only time will tell if Buhari will keep his word.
