One person is dead and several others injured following an accident in Nyeri involving a matatu known as Uppercut.

The young man explained that the road trip had been organised by a travel group who hired him to work as the photographer for the day.
He revealed that the driver had been drinking alcohol even before they set out for the trip and was already drunk by the time they arrived in Nyeri.
“We arrived at the falls around 6pm. After the activities, we left the venue at around 8pm. The incident occurred at approximately 8:30pm,” he said.

How did the Uppercut matatu crash?
Nickie said that while they were heading back to Nairobi, the driver—though drunk—was not swerving recklessly, but he was speeding.
He noted that they approached a sharp corner, and it was at that point the driver lost control of the vehicle, resulting in the tragic crash.
According to Nickie, the owner of the matatu could also share in the blame. He explained that the owner had been alerted via social media about the driver’s reckless behaviour and decided to intervene.
“He got wind of information that the matatu was being driven recklessly and followed us. He found us near Weitethie in Thika. He stopped the vehicle, said the organisers should be refunded, and ordered that the matatu be returned to the parking yard,” Nickie shared.
Despite this, the driver resumed the journey back to Nairobi from Thika, following his boss’s orders, but made another stop at Kenyatta Road.
“I don’t know what they discussed, but the journey to Nyeri continued with the same driver. We thought he would be replaced, but he wasn’t,” he said.
Nickie revealed that he lost all his work equipment in the crash but is grateful to be alive. He added that two other people were in critical condition, and one person lost their life.
“The police said it seems locals who were at the scene may have made away with my camera and other equipment,” he stated.
