The conference aims to strengthen partnerships between the United States, Caribbean governments, and regional and multilateral institutions to address pressing issues such as cybersecurity, climate change, and transnational crime.

During her visit to Spot Valley High School on June 6, 2023, US Army General Laura Richardson, the Commander of US Southern Command (SOUTHCOM), announced the donation of three state-of-the-art multifunction printers and three advanced-technology interactive whiteboards to Jamaica’s Ministry of Education.

These equipment were valued at nearly J$2.4 million and were delivered during General Richardson’s visit to the school. The donated equipment will support the educational program and learning activities of over 1,000 students at Spot Valley High School.

General Richardson was joined by Rear Admiral Antonette Wemyss Gorman, the Chief of Defense Staff of the Jamaica Defense Force (JDF); Amy Tachco, the Chargé d’Affaires of the US Embassy; and Dr. Michelle Pinnock, the Regional Director of the Ministry of Education, during the handover of the equipment.

This donation is part of SOUTHCOM’s efforts to assist Jamaica in its community service, disaster resilience, and security initiatives. It reflects the ongoing support provided by SOUTHCOM to the JDF and the Jamaican Government.

The donation of the printers and interactive whiteboards is in line with General Richardson’s participation in the Caribbean Nations Security Conference. The conference serves as a platform to strengthen partnerships and collaboration between the United States, Caribbean governments, and regional and multilateral institutions.

By addressing critical issues like cybersecurity, climate change, and transnational crime, the conference aims to enhance regional security and promote the well-being of the Caribbean nations.

Overall, the game-changing donation from the US Southern Command to enhance education in Jamaica demonstrates the shared commitment of both countries to foster educational development, empower students with the latest technology, and build lasting partnerships.

Through this collaboration, Jamaica’s Ministry of Education and the US Southern Command are making significant strides to provide quality education and equip students with the necessary skills for a successful future
