Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja has reiterated that President William Ruto and Opposition leader Raila Odinga should hold talks with a view to ending the ongoing streets protests.
Speaking at City Hall on Tuesday, Governor Sakaja condemned the Azimio protests that occurred on Monday, March 20, 2023, saying the county lost half of its daily revenue.
“We collected half of our daily revenue, Sh30.3 million, due to Azimio protests and we cannot sustain it should it be weekly,” he said.
Sakaja also called for the prosecution of protesters who vandalized public property.
“We need to avoid what we saw yesterday. We saw some of the protesters taking advantage to vandalize infrastructure within the city center. Some of them were captured on camera doing it. If you were seen specifically on camera vandalizing public property, you must be persecuted,” the Nairobi county boss added.
“Those who took advantage and uprooted public infrastructure, I saw someone carrying the Tom Mboya Street signage, those who were captured must be charged,” he insisted.
Governor Sakaja at the same time called for a truce between President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga.
“I do not want to sound political but I still stand for what I said previously. That the leaders from both Azimio and Kenya Kwanza should meet and have a dialogue for the benefit of the citizens,” he said.
