What Does Fernandez Bring to Chelsea’s Midfield? Tactical Analysis of Enzo Fernandez

After all the transfer drama and saga, finally Chelsea has landed her dream signing in Enzo Fernandez.

A late negotiation and agreement were made on the deadline day for the World Cup winner to switch his allegiance to the London-based club as Chelsea’s assistant captain Goginho was allowed to cross over to North London rivals Arsenal.

It’s very clear why Chelsea broke the British transfer record for the Argentine star after rising to the occasion a couple of months ago during the World Cup and playing a huge role in Benfica’s midfield in his first campaign.

However, just how good is Enzo Fernandez and how does he fit into this Chelsea side? After making just 17 appearances for Benfica this term, Chelsea is banking on the Worlds best young player who promises to be a sensational signing to take Chelsea’s game to the whole next level.

With six assists from the base of midfield for Benfica this term, it’s pretty clear that this is a significant upgrade for Goginho. Fernandez is having some impressive attacking stats from midfield which will significantly improve Chelsea’s midfield as he’s averaging 98 passes per 90 this season which points to his importance to build up play. The interesting part is that Fernandez averages almost 10 progressive passes per 90 which are almost double Goginho’s tally.

It may not be a significant conversation comparing Fernandez to Goginho but we can freely do that as it’s like a like-to-like replacement in Chelsea’s midfield, honestly, Fernandez may have to up his game in order to fully fill Goginho’s defensive boot as the Italian is an underrated reader of the game which you can see in the number of interceptions he’s historically clocked up.

However, Enzo is just physically so much more capable and it will be silly to think that he will not make it to the first eleven considering his good numbers in Benfica’s midfield as well as the Argentine national team. It will be interesting to see how Potter will be fielding his first eleven with many problems now rising up for players like Mason Mount who has greatly underwhelmed this term.

We can imagine an Enzo Kante partnership but this will be more unlikely considering the latter’s fitness issues leaving us with two options in Zakaria and Kovacic. Two decent players that have shown great quality and will of course benefit from playing alongside the World Cup winner.

Enzo’s arrival and other players like Mudryk put a lot of pressure on the manager to make every soul happy at the Bridge to have his dressing room under control as more big names are expected to accept a place for them on the bench.

Let me know in the comment section what you think of Enzo’s arrival as the Blues are completing the post-Abramovich rebuild.
