“I Don’t See Any Problem With Ruto Taking Control in IEBC” Azimio MP Faults Raila

The Azimio coalition led by Raila Odinga held a mega rally at Jacaranda grounds on Sunday 29. The coalition continued with the onslaught against the Kenya Kwanza government.

Odinga also lamented that president William Ruto has captured the 13 parliament, and that he is using it to pass punitive laws.

He cited the IEBC selection panel bill which was recently signed by president William Ruto into law. According to the Azimio leader, president William Ruto signed the bill as a way of trying to take control over the next phase of IEBC commissioners. Raila said that Ruto must be stopped by all means.

However, Jubilee party lawmaker, Kwenya Thuku, has said that he doesn’t see any problem with president William Ruto taking control of IEBC.

Speaking during a political interview at Inooro TV on Sunday night, the Kinangop MP said that all presidents have been seeking control over powerful commissions but the rule of law has always prevailed.

He cited a few cases during president Uhuru’s tenure where he noted that despite the president having participated in the appointment of the Supreme Court judges, the same judges went ahead to overturn his win in 2017.

He also cited the appointment of the 4 IEBC commissioners who has been frequently referred as Cherera 4. Kwenya noted that despite the handshake government having participated in their appointment, they still couldn’t be able to overturn Ruto’s win in the last election.

“I don’t know why Raila is bothering Kenyans with the issue of IEBC law. The law was passed by the previous parliament under the regime of Uhuru Kenyatta. Ruto has found the law in place and it was remaining only for the Senate to debate which they did and passed it,” said the Jubilee lawmaker.

“It’s obvious that when the president takes power, he must try to take control of major institutions. It has happened in Kenya with all the presidents and that’s why they have been trying to persuade the parliament. I see absolutely nothing wrong with Ruto trying to take control of IEBC. The good thing is that we have a constitution which has a natural way of healing things,” added the legislator. (Watch video from 35 min).

“Despite Uhuru having participated in the appointment of Maraga, he went ahead to nullify his win. The handshake partners participated in the appointment of Cherera 4 but still couldn’t manage to favor them in the election. It won’t be different with Ruto,” stated Kwenya.

The lawmaker argued that even if Ruto was to control the IEBC, he would still not be able to influence the outcome of the election. He faulted Raila asking him not to worry about the recently signed law.
