Two gunmen who killed 15 people at Bondi Beach in Sydney on Sunday, December 14, have been identified in local media as father and son Sajid Akram, 50, and Naveed Akram, 24. Police confirmed the relationship, reporting that the older man died at the scene, while his son remains in critical condition in the hospital.
Authorities say the men had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State (IS) group, and IS flags were reportedly found in their vehicle. The attack specifically targeted Jewish people attending a Hanukkah event. Among the victims are a 10-year-old girl, a British-born rabbi, a retired police officer, and a Holocaust survivor.
During the attack, bystander Ahmed al Ahmed was filmed wrestling a gun from one of the attackers. His parents say he was shot four or five times in the shoulder. New South Wales Premier Chris Minns visited him in hospital to check on his condition.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has promised to push for tougher gun laws following the attack. Reports indicate that the older attacker held a firearms licence for recreational hunting.
