Spotlight: UK hip-hop artist Jordan Adetunji on all things ‘Kehlani’

UK hip hop artist Jordan Adetunji, 24, broke out with a single that became an instant hit, leading to a music video and a major feature on the remix. He’s not new to the music industry but this viral hit gave him just the perfect recognition.

Released on May 19, 2024, ‘’Kehlani’’ went viral on TikTok breaking out with a dance tutorial that had most of TikTok users dancing up a storm.

The song is inspired by singer Kehlani and for Jordan Adetunji, dropping her name on the song was a no brainer as he’s always wanted to write a song about someone of high calibre and Kehlani was just the perfect person.

‘’It was always a risk for me but I ended up just doing it anyway. I just decided to post and see what happens and she took to it really well which was a big win for everybody,’’ he says.

US platinum selling and Grammy nominated R&B singer Kehlani heard the song as it went viral on TikTok and reached out to Adetunji for a copy while he was on a night out.

Fortunately he had a file on his phone, which already included an open verse, and sent it straight away. And that ladies and gentleman is how the ‘’Kehlani’’ remix was born.

The songstress recorded two different verses for the remix as well and sang on the chorus, the remix has since hit 15,893,479 streams on Spotify with one verse making it.

Since the success of the song, Adethunji tells IOL that he has received a larger audience and he is ready to let everyone into his world and music, ‘’I can now deliver the creativity that I have in my mind to a larger mass of people,’’ he adds.

The TikTok dance gained traction on the popular app in June after two users created it using the ‘’Kehlani’’ song. Many others joined in even creating a tutorial on how to do it. They were not the only ones – celebrities such as Kim Kardashian and Savannah James also participated.

R&B singer Summer Walker’s ‘’Potential’’ was sampled on the song, her soulful harmonies blending in nicely with the beat. The sampling is inspired by the producer’s girlfriend who recommended that the song be used for the beat since she loved it.

When it comes to South African artists, Adetunji has pop songstress Tyla on his collaboration wishlist. He shares that Amazwe by Kabza De Small is his favourite amapiano song at the moment.
