Dave Coulier Finally Reacts to Alanis Morissette’s “You Oughta Know”: She’s Really Mad at Me!

For decades it’s been one of the great nuggets of pop music trivia.

And the fact that it remained unconfirmed by any of the principal players involved granted it a sort of urban legend status:

In 1995, Alanis Morissette released her breakthrough single “You Oughta Know.”

The song became an instant classic and helped to turn Alanis into a household name overnight.

And to the utter shock of millions of fans, the aggro breakup anthem was rumored to have been inspired by the singer’s breakup with Dave Coulier, who’s best known for his role as the Bullwinkle-quoting comic Joey on the nineties sitcom Full House.

The fellow Canadians dated and broke up not long before the release of Alanis’ iconic Jagged Little Pill album, and clearly, the split made quite an impression on the singer.

Understandably, Coulier has been reluctant to discuss his surprising role in rock history.

But he broke his self-imposed silence this week to discuss the song during an interview with fellow comic Jim Norton on the latter’s SiriusXM radio show.

“I’m driving in Detroit and I’ve got my radio on, and I hear the hook for ‘You Oughta Know’ come on the radio,” Coulier recalled.

“And I’m like, ‘Wow, this is a really cool hook.’ And then I start hearing the voice. I’m like, ‘Wow, this girl can sing.’ And I had no idea that this was the record.”

Coulier said he was less than thrilled by the slow realization that he’d inspired such an angry song, and he later learned that he was referenced throughout Morissette’s most famous album.

“I’m listening to the lyrics going, ‘Ooh, oh no. Oh, I can’t be this guy.’ And I went to the record store, bought the CD and I went and I parked on a street and I listened to the whole record,” he told Norton.

“And there was a lot of familiar stuff in there that her and I had talked about. Like (the lyric) ‘Your shake is like a fish.’ I’d go, ‘Hey, dead fish me,’ and we’d do this dead fish handshake.”

“I started listening to it and I thought, ‘Ooh, I think I may have really hurt this woman.’ And that was my first thought,” Coulier explained.

“And so years later we reconnected, and she couldn’t have been sweeter. And I said, ‘What do you want me to say when people ask me about this relationship?’” the comic recollected.

“And she said, ‘You can say whatever you want.’ So, she was really sweet about it. She was kind.”

Dave Coulier: I'm NOT Alanis' 'You Oughta Know' Inspiration!

Yes, sadly for those who were hoping for high drama, it seems that these two handled the situation in the most Canadian way possible and have remained close friends.

In fact, Coulier concluded the Alanis portion of the interview by sharing evidence of what kind person she is.

“When my sister Sharon was dying with cancer, Alanis was living in Toronto. My sister was in Detroit,” he said.

“She actually drove to Detroit with her guitar and sat with my sister playing songs and singing to my sister in the hospital. That’s the kind of human being she is. So, I’ve never had anything bad to say about her. She’s lovely.”

Coulier was asked to spill the tea about his ex, and instead, he talked about what a wonderful person she is.

Isn’t ironic? Dontcha think?
