Meghan Markle: Are the Royals Using Her Bullying Scandal to Distract From Their Own Bad News?

These are tough times for the royal family.

The Queen and company are obviously no strangers to scandal, but over the course of the past two years, they’ve encountered more criticism from the press and public than at any other time in recent history.

There was a time when Prince Andrew paying off his sexual assault victim with money borrowed from the Crown would have been the sort of thing that made headlines for years.

These days, stories of that magnitude are often overshadowed by new royal scandals within a week.

The latest controversy involving the Windsor clan stems from allegations that Prince Charles accepted a suitcase containing one million euros as a pay-off from a former prime minister of Qatar.

Those rumors come on the heels of financial reports that reveal the royals are spending far more than they bring into their country’s coffers via tourism.

Despite all of that, for most of this past week, the majority of the media coverage of the royals has had to do with bullying allegations against Meghan.

The allegations are old, but palace officials raised the issue again this week by announcing that they had concluded their investigation into Meghan’s alleged misconduct.

The palace did not publish the details of their findings, however — thus ensuring that the British tabloid press would have a field day rehashing the claims that Meghan had mistreated staff during her time at Kensington Palace.

Now, royal journalist Omid Scobie is alleging that the timing of the royals’ announcement was carefully planned to distract from larger issues.

“The coverage was no coincidence,” Scobie wrote for Yahoo News.

“Never complain, never explain may slowly be becoming a thing of the past at the palace (well, according to Prince William at least), but a different order of the day has quickly risen within the institution of the monarchy: deflect and distract.”

Scobie noted that the Windsors’ vague announcement regarding the bullying investigation was “suspiciously timed.”

“In an era where transparency is vital for any public officials to survive, the days of the royal family being able to hide transgressions or mistakes are long gone,” Scobie continued.

“A free and fearless press makes sure of that. Which is why the institution has instead resorted to activating distractions in times of crisis.”

The journalist, who has been accused, in the past, of demonstrating bias toward Harry and Meghan went on to say that he believes the royals’ distraction campaign has been unsuccessful.

“I’m just not sure who it is they think they are fooling? The public aren’t stupid,” Scobie wrote.

“And a brief look at social media shows that a large majority of individuals can see straight through the smoke and mirrors.”

Indeed, it does seem that quite a few people have seen through the royals’ ploy.

But it’s important to bear in mind that Scobie is writing from a Brit’s perspective.

On this side of the pond, folks are generally less aware of the scandals that have beset the royals in recent weeks, and as a result, Americans might be less likely to recognize what’s really going on here.

But the important thing is that Meghan and Harry are not bothered.

They’re focusing on bigger issues, with Meghan speaking out against the reversal of Roe v. Wade and assuring the public that Harry shares her views.

So let the figureheads in London fixate on their petty personal problems.

The real power couple is too busy changing the world for the better!
