Residents of Central Market, Kinyasano ward in Rukungiri District in western Uganda were on Wednesday left in shock after a 24-year-old man was stabbed to death when a gambling game turned violent.

Ronald Akandwanaho, a resident of Rugomera cell, Kazindiro parish in Buganagari Sub-county, together with four colleagues, are said to have been playing cards for money at a shop when he got stabbed.

A fight broke out after the suspect (name withheld) reportedly failed to pay Shs1500 as a stake for the game in which Akandwanaho emerged as a winner.

According to eyewitnesses, the scuffle ensued when Akandawanaho demanded that the suspect honours the rules of the game by paying his brother Shs1500 but all in vain.

The eyewitnesses added that the persistent demand for the said money angered the suspect who engaged Akandawanaho and his brother in a quarrel but was over-powered.

The suspect who felt double-cheated, picked a knife and stabbed Akandwanaho in the neck, killing him instantly.

The Rukungiri District police commander Moses Nanoka, said police rushed to the scene and arrested three people including the owner of the shop at which they were playing cards, the deceased’s brother Ivan Ainebyoona.

He identified the arrested as Richard Mwesigye the owner of the shop, Ivan Ainebyoona the brother to the deceased and Asuman Mugisha, the brother to the shop owner.
“The deceased and the key suspect were released from prison barely two weeks ago. They are serial criminals. They have even started killing each other but we shall arrest the others,” he said.

He said Akandawanaho’s body was taken to Rwakabengo health center II mortuary for a post-mortem.
