Bawumia calls for support for Asantehene-led mediation to end Bawku crisis

0

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has called for the full cooperation of all parties involved in the protracted Bawku conflict with the mediation team led by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, in a bid to restore lasting peace to the troubled town in Ghana’s Upper East Region.

Speaking during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) national “Thank You” tour in Bolgatanga on Monday, Dr. Bawumia expressed profound sadness over the decades-long conflict between the Kusasi and Mamprusi ethnic groups, which has recently flared up with deadly consequences.

“I feel so sad about this conflict and the killing of innocent people. Mamprusis and Kusasis are one people and this should not be happening. We understand each other’s language and we have intermarried so we are one people,” he said.

Dr. Bawumia appealed to all stakeholders and factions to support the ongoing mediation led by the Asantehene, describing the monarch’s efforts as crucial to achieving sustainable peace in the area.

“I pray the mediation team being led by the Asantehene, Otumfuo II, will be able to bring much-needed peace in Bawku. I want to urge the factions and all stakeholders to cooperate with the mediation team led by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II,” he said.

The former Vice President also condemned the politicisation of the conflict, accusing some politicians of fuelling the tensions for selfish purposes. “The politicisation of the crisis in Bawku is very unfortunate because some people do that for their own parochial interests, not the peace and stability of the area,” Dr. Bawumia stated.

He alleged that falsehoods had been spread about his involvement in the conflict for political gain, including accusations that he was arming one side of the feud. “They played politics with the situation and went round lying to the people that I was behind it. They said I was buying guns for Mamprusis to kill Kusasis. These were the lies they spread against me and I was so sad when I heard it,” he lamented.

Dr. Bawumia further claimed that members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) spearheaded the misinformation, some of which, he noted, had unfortunately been believed even within his own party. “Furthermore, the events in Bawku now have clearly demonstrated that the NDC lied to the people of Bawku for political advantage and today, everyone has seen their lies,” he added.

“By the grace of God, many people have now seen their lies and the truth. Those who peddled these lies have now been exposed. This should be a lesson that nobody should play politics with the Bawku issue,” he cautioned.

Dr. Bawumia reiterated his call for unity and the depoliticisation of chieftaincy matters, stating, “As politicians, let us be careful in using chieftaincy issues to do politics. The NDC have done it and it is now hanging around their neck. I want peace in Bawku more than anybody.”

The Bawku conflict, rooted in a longstanding chieftaincy dispute, has claimed numerous lives and displaced many residents over the years. The government and traditional authorities, including the Asantehene, continue to explore avenues for lasting resolution.

Declare assets by May 7 or be dismissed- President to appointees

0

By Iddi Yire

Accra, May 05, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama has given his appointees, who failed to meet his March 31st deadline to declare their assets up to Wednesday, May 7, or consider themselves dismissed.

The Public Office Holders (Declaration of Assets and Disqualification) Act, 1998 (Act 550) mandates public officials to declare their assets and liabilities upon their assumption of office.

The law aims to prevent corruption, detect illicit enrichment, and address conflicts of interest by requiring public officials to disclose their assets and liabilities.

President Mahama gave the firm directive when he unveiled a Code of Ethics and Conduct for his Ministers and appointees, charging them to abide by it.

The Code is to regulate the conduct of the President’s appointees, thereby ensuring transparency and accountability in Government.

He noted that the Code of Ethics was more than a code and that it was a declaration of intent.

“It is the foundation of a new ethos in public service, one that values ethics over expediency, duty over indulgence, country over self. We are here to serve and will serve with honor,” the President stated.

He recalled that on the 18th of February, he set a deadline of 31st of March, for all appointees who were taking office or being nominated at the time to declare their assets.

He said an update provided by the Auditor General to his office indicates that some of them failed to meet that deadline.

“For all those who were appointed or nominated before 31st of March 2025 and failed to meet the deadline, you are to forfeit three months of salary to be donated to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, named after me, Mahama Cares,” he said.

He said this was in addition to one month’s salary, that he had asked all appointees to donate to the Mahama Cares Trust Fund.

He noted that this means that those who omitted to declare assets by the date would be paying four months’ salary to Mahama Cares.

“However, if by close of day Wednesday, 7th of May 2025, any of you still fails to declare your assets, count yourself automatically dismissed,” he said.

The President said the assets declaration regime was an important mechanism to check corruption and abuse of office, and it must be respected by all.

“Strict compliance with this code will restore confidence in the political elite and help to consolidate our democracy.”

Mr Julius Debrah, the Chief of Staff at the Presidency, urged Ministers of State and other appointees of the President to abide by the Code of Ethics and Conduct.

Ghana is under siege, help us defend it – Afenyo-Markin tells Parliament

0

Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has called on Members of Parliament to set aside partisan loyalties and unite in defence of Ghana’s democratic institutions, particularly the independence of the judiciary.

His remarks were made on Monday, May 5, during a protest by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) against the recent suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo by President John Dramani Mahama.

The protestors presented a petition to Parliament, which was received by Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror.

Describing the current political climate as a threat to the country’s constitutional order, Mr. Afenyo-Markin pointed out, “Ghana is under siege. This is a call to all of us, regardless of political affiliation, to defend the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary.”

He denounced what he called politically driven interference in the judiciary and urged Parliament to assert its constitutional mandate as a vital check on executive overreach.

“We cannot allow institutions of state to be undermined under the guise of accountability. Parliament must act as the last line of defence for our democracy,” he emphasised.

President Mahama donates two cars to the State

0

By Iddi Yire

Accra, May 5, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama on Monday donated to the State two cars he had received as gifts from two car manufacturing companies.

Mr Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Presidential Spokesman and Minister of State in-charge of Government Communications, on behalf of President Mahama, presented the two cars to Mr Julius Debrah, the Chief of Staff at the Presidency, to be added to the Government pool of vehicles.

The two cars were received jointly by Mr Debrah and Dr Valerie Sawyerr, Senior Presidential Advisor, Governmental Affairs.

The presentation took place during the unveiling of the Code of Ethics and Conduct of Minister by the President at the Presidency in Accra.

Mr Ofosu reiterated that President Mahama was leading the nation by example.

President Mahama in his remarks during the unveiling of the Code of Ethics and Conduct, said the Code represented a bold declaration of the standards appointees must uphold as servants of the public.

He said it reflected the commitment to build a government that was ethical, responsive, and worthy of the people’s trust.

“Let me be clear. This document is not a ceremonial one. It is a living and enforceable framework that outlines what is expected of every individual appointed under this administration,” he said.

The President reiterated that although the document often used the term Minister, it applied broadly to himself, the President, the Vice President, Ministers of State, Deputy Ministers, Members of the Council of State, Presidential Staffers, Chief Executive Officers and their Deputies, Board Members, and other political appointees within the Executive Arm of Government.

“This is a government of shared responsibility, and there will be no sacred cows. Why do we need a Code of Conduct? Because we must build a new political culture, one that is rooted in transparency, humility, and ethical leadership,” the President said.

“Ghanaians deserve leaders who serve with honour and put the public interest ahead of their personal gain.”

President Mahama said the Code was designed to guide the office holders actions and decision-making, and to make clear the consequences that would happen when they fall short.

He said his appointees were prohibited from accepting gifts or favours, especially from companies or individuals with interest in governmental decisions.

“If a gift is received during an official engagement and its estimated value exceeds GH¢20,000.00, it must be declared,” he said.

The President said upon leaving office, the gift must be surrendered unless expressly permitted to retain it by the President.

President Mahama said: “Strict compliance with this code will restore confidence in the political elite and help to consolidate our democracy.

“And so I expect all of you to do your best to abide by the code. Let us walk this path together with discipline, with humility, and with an unyielding commitment to the people of Ghana.”

Mr Julius Debrah, the Chief of Staff at the Presidency, urged Ministers of State and other appointees of the President to abide by the Code of Ethics and Conduct.

“An aspect of governance is like running a boarding school. There needs to be checks and balances, rules and regulations that tell you don’t walk around during prep hours. The same thing applies to what we’re doing here,” the Chief of Staff said.

“And so, I will encourage each and every one of you, once you get your copy, to study it just like your Bible. Because there shall never be any excuse for whatsoever when you cross the line.”

Ghanaian rapper M.anifest paid a visit to West Ham star Mohammed Kudus on Sunday, May 5, 2025, as the Hammers drew 1-1 with Tottenham Hotspur in a London derby at the London Stadium.

The award-winning rapper was captured in a warm exchange with the Ghanaian international after the match, showing his support for Kudus in a video shared on his Instagram page.

“Love to the bro @kudus_mohammed. Keep soaring. Thank you for your hospitality, @westham,” M.anifest wrote, alongside footage of the two embracing and chatting.

In a show of appreciation, Kudus presented M.anifest with a customised West Ham jersey after the match.

On the pitch, West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen scored his 10th league goal of the season, cancelling out an early strike from Spurs’ Wilson Odobert.

President Mahama praises Bishop Agyinasare for speaking truth to power in challenging times

President John Dramani Mahama and Archbishop Charles Agyinasare President John Dramani Mahama and Archbishop Charles Agyinasare

President John Dramani Mahama has lauded Archbishop Charles Agyinasare as the only courageous spiritual leader who spoke truth to power during some of Ghana’s most challenging moments.

Speaking at the Supernatural Empowerment Summit 2025 at Perez Chapel International in Accra, Mr Mahama described the founder of the Perez Chapel as a “lone voice” who stood firm when others remained silent.

“The good thing about the Archbishop is that I believe the work of a man of God is not only to preach the word. When God gives you a prophetic gift, you exercise it; if He gives you the gift of speaking in tongues, you exercise it. But most of all, what God expects from men of God is the courage to tell the truth at all times. And not many people have that courage. When times were tough in this country, he was a lone voice who stood out and had the courage to speak up,” Mr Mahama said during the summit’s grand finale on Sunday.

“I know what he went through because of that, but God will always protect His own,” the president added, drawing applause from a packed auditorium of thousands, including political, business, and faith leaders from over 45 countries.

The week-long summit brought together high-profile figures, including Dr Satish Kumar, pastor of one of the world’s largest churches, and members of Ghana’s political elite.

The Archbishop’s keynote sermon, titled “The Divine Mandate for Increase,” challenged believers across all spheres—ministry, marketplace, and government—to embrace spiritual empowerment for national transformation.

He called on politicians to see their public office as a divine altar and urged leaders to govern with wisdom and righteousness.

Archbishop Agyinasare also encouraged political leaders to take a rest when fatigued in order not to take decisions that could prove disastrous.

President Mahama, who attended the summit’s climax service, said the Archbishop’s message on “Managing the Anointing” spoke directly to him, especially the call for leaders to value rest and spiritual renewal.

Archbishop Agyinasare, known for his unapologetic sermons on governance and morality, has previously drawn public attention for his outspokenness on national issues—a trait Mr Mahama said deserves recognition.

The summit also marked a generational shift within Perez Chapel International, as the church inducted Rt Rev Raymond Kumah Acquah as its new Presiding Bishop and Rt Rev Dr Selaise Agyinasare, son of the Archbishop, as its new Administrative Bishop.

On the final night, representatives from across the nations gathered on stage with their national flags as Archbishop Agyinasare, draped in the Ghanaian flag, led prayers for global peace and national unity.

As the curtains fell on the high-profile summit, delegates departed Accra with renewed spiritual fervour and a call to transform their communities—echoing the Archbishop’s rallying cry for bold, faith-filled leadership across all sectors of society.

The PSP Steering Committee will be chaired by Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor, Minister for Energy and Green Transition, with Hon. Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, Minister of Finance, serving as co-chair.

He explained that the Steering Committee would provide strategic direction for the PSP rollout, gather baseline data including auditing the PSP deal, coordinate with ECG, NEDCo, regulatory bodies, and transaction advisors, as well as monitor progress across critical milestones.

“The Committee will also be responsible for reviewing and advising on transaction documents, procurement frameworks, draft agreements, risk mitigation strategies, regulatory compliance, and stakeholder communications,” Hon. Jinapor said.

He added that the PSP Implementation Unit within the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition would serve as the Secretariat to the Committee, offering administrative and technical support throughout the implementation process.

Hon. Jinapor charged the Committee to ensure that the procurement of technical, financial, and legal transaction advisors is completed by May 31, 2025, to facilitate the commencement of detailed implementation.

“By September 2025, we anticipate issuing the first phase of the competitive bidding documents for private concessionaires,” he stated.

Three sub-committees; Technical, Governance & Regulatory, and Stakeholder Management have also been established to support the process.

Mr. Jabesh Amissah-Arthur, Chair of the Technical Sub-Committee, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and called on Ghanaians to support the Committee as it undertakes its critical mandate.

“The road will be challenging and difficult but I have confidence in the members that we will be able to live up to expectation by providing guidance to the re-structuring of the power distribution sector to ensure customer service satisfaction,” he said.

Acting Chief Justice Baffoe Bonnie (L) and suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo

In an interesting move, Paul Adom-Otchere of Metro TV, one of the leading media houses in Ghana has petitioned the acting Chief Justice to grant permission to media houses more specifically, Good Evening Ghana of Metro TV, to provide live coverage of the proceedings of the Supreme Court in the case of Vincent Ekow Assafuah v The Attorney General, on the 6th of May, 2025.

He urged the Acting Chief Justice to do this citing former conventions and practices more particularly, the administrative fiat of the then Chief Justice, Georgina Wood which granted permission to the media to cover the proceedings of the 2012 election petition.

In his request he noted thus; “In line to foster transparency and interest in judicial processes by the common man, it is the humble prayer of my production team and myself to be granted the permission to cover the proceedings of the Supreme Court on the 6th of May, 2025.”

Declare your assets or be dismissed – Mahama warns appointees

0

President John Mahama has issued a strong warning to government appointees who failed to declare their assets by the 31st March 2025 deadline. He announced that any appointee who still fails to comply by Wednesday, 7th May, will be automatically dismissed.

Speaking at the Jubilee House on Monday, May 5 during the launch of a new Code of Conduct for government appointees, the President also revealed financial penalties for those who missed the initial deadline.

“On the 18th February 2025, I set a deadline of 31st March 2025 for all appointees who are taking office or being nominated at the time to declare their assets. An update provided by the Auditor General to my office indicates that some of you failed to meet that deadline,” he said.

“For all those who were appointed or nominated before 31st March 2025 and failed to meet the deadline, you are to forfeit three months of salary to be donated to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, named after me, Mahama Cares, in addition to one month’s salary that I have asked all appointees to donate,” he added.

“In effect,” the President stressed, “those who omitted to declare assets by the date are paying four months’ salary to Mahama Cares. However, if by close of day, Wednesday, 7th May 2025, any of you still fails to declare your assets, count yourself automatically dismissed.”

President Mahama emphasised that asset declaration is a key anti-corruption tool and must be respected. “The assets declaration regime is an important mechanism to check corruption and abuse of office and it must be respected by all,” he noted.

The new Code of Conduct, launched at the same event, also bans the acceptance of gifts or favours by appointees from individuals or companies with an interest in government decisions.

“We all know our cultural fondness for gifts, but we must now draw a clear line between appreciation and influence. Appointees are prohibited from gifts or favours especially from companies or individuals with interest in governmental decisions. If a gift is received during an official engagement and its estimated value exceeds 20,000 cedis, it must be declared,” the President said.

He explained that such gifts must be surrendered when leaving office unless the President gives permission to retain them.

He further cautioned that no government funds, including internally generated funds, should be used to buy or distribute hampers except modest gifts for staff as rewards for excellence or retirement. Entities that need to give gifts as part of their commercial policy must first get approval from the Chief of Staff.

President Mahama also gave a firm directive on the handling of state assets.

“No political appointee under this administration is permitted to purchase state assets whether lands, vehicles, shares or buildings directly or indirectly. If you attempt to do so and you are found out, your appointment will be terminated. We are here to protect the national interest, not to help ourselves to the national purse.”

On the issue of disciplinary measures, the President laid out clear sanctions for breaches of the Code. “Sanctions for violation: the code sets out consequences for breach, from public apology to reprimand, to suspension, to resignation or ultimately termination. Let me assure you that these sanctions are not cosmetic they will be enforced. I will not hesitate to act firmly and decisively no matter who is involved,” he said.

He called on citizens to actively help enforce the new standards, revealing plans to launch a public reporting portal.

“Accountability does not end at the walls of this room. I invite the citizens of Ghana to play a role in monitoring compliance of this code. A portal will be created for the public to report suspected breaches with guarantees of confidentiality and impartial investigation.”

“What we have launched today is more than a code. It is a declaration of intent. It is a foundation of a new ethos in public service one that values ethics over expediency, duty over indulgence, country over self. We are here to serve, and we will serve with honour,” the President added.

Goosie Tanoh unveils vision for Ghana’s export transformation at presidential committee launch

0

At the inauguration of the Presidential Committee on Accelerated Export Development (PCAED) on Monday, May 5, at the Jubilee House, Presidential Advisor Goosie Tanoh articulated a comprehensive vision for Ghana’s economic transformation through an intensified focus on exports.

Addressing President John Dramani Mahama, ministers, and industry leaders, Mr. Tanoh emphasized that the Accelerated Export Development programme, intertwined with the President’s 24-Hour Economy initiative, aims to create a resilient, self-reliant, and globally competitive economy benefiting all Ghanaians.

He highlighted that the programme rests on three pillars: production transformation, market systems efficiency, and human capital development. He stressed the urgent need to move Ghana beyond raw commodity exports towards value-added products, reduce logistics costs, improve trade facilitation, and cultivate a skilled workforce.

The President’s 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development programme is Ghana’s strategy for structural transformation… The programme envisions a resilient, self-reliant, and globally competitive economy that optimises asset utilisation and creates value for all its citizens, especially the most vulnerable,” Tanoh stated.

He acknowledged the current underwhelming annual non-traditional export earnings of $3.5 billion, underscoring the necessity to assist local producers in expanding and diversifying their production for both regional and continental markets. Tanoh pinpointed regulatory hurdles, port inefficiencies, and a deficit in accredited laboratories as key challenges hindering export growth.

Despite these obstacles, Tanoh emphasized Ghana’s strategic advantages, including its coastal location, peaceful environment, English-speaking status, strong continental relations, expanding infrastructure, and youthful workforce, as well as hosting the AfCFTA Secretariat.

He expressed confidence that with strategic investments, quality adherence, efficient logistics, and a well-defined market strategy, Ghana can become a central production and export hub in West Africa.

Tanoh commended President Mahama for establishing the PCAED, recognizing its strategic importance in driving export transformation through the collaboration of business leaders, trade experts, and regulators.

He urged committee members to convey the needs of Ghanaian industries to the President to facilitate accelerated export development, ultimately aiming to create wealth and meaningful work for Ghanaians and elevate the nation in global trade.

Some female artistes go half-naked on Tiktok to get noticed

Traditional musician, Sherifa Gunu Traditional musician, Sherifa Gunu

Ghanaian musician Sherifa Gunu has expressed her concerns about social media in the music industry, calling it both a blessing and a curse.

In an interview with Graphic Showbiz, she lamented the growing pressure on female artistes to compromise their dignity in search of clicks.

According to her, many musicians now feel compelled to post revealing content on platforms like TikTok to gain attention, overshadowing raw talent.

“Social media is a blessing and a curse. Even if you’re the most talented artiste, you won’t get noticed unless you’re half-naked on TikTok. Sadly, talent alone isn’t enough anymore,” she lamented.

Despite these challenges, Sherifa remains committed to using her platform to promote authentic music.

“I still use my page to remind fans that real music exists,” she added.

She also highlighted the lack of recognition for veteran artists in Ghana, contrasting it with other nations that celebrate their cultural icons while they are still alive.

Sherifa criticised the trend of honouring legends only after their passing or after they gain international acclaim, stressing the need for greater appreciation of Ghana’s pioneering musicians.

Post-election forum demands reforms, pushes for Affirmative Action law backing

Participants at a post-election forum have renewed calls for sustained electoral and institutional reforms, with particular emphasis on gender inclusion and the active involvement of community influencers such as traditional and religious leaders.

Speaking at the forum organised by IDEG and NORSAAC with funding from the European Union, a women’s rights advocate and Executive Director of SWIDA, Hajia Alima Sagito, emphasised the importance of opportunity over prejudice in leadership spaces.

She challenged the persistent narrative that women lack the capacity to lead, asserting that given equal access to opportunities and resources, women can deliver results and will actively seek support to succeed.

“It is not about whether the woman has the quality. Give her the opportunity and the right support systems and she will deliver. Women will pull their weight if they are given the chance,” she stated.

According to Hajia Alima, the role of community leadership is crucial in advancing the implementation of the Affirmative Action (Gender Equality) Law 2024.

She noted that while traditional leaders have long been gatekeepers in local governance, religious leaders, particularly Imams and pastors, hold immense influence and must use their platforms to champion gender equity.

“Our traditional leaders are essential, but our religious leaders are revered. If they go to the mosque or church advocating for the Affirmative Action Law, it will greatly increase public awareness and acceptance,” she added.

The forum, held at UDS Tamale Campus, was part of post-2024 election reviews, bringing together civil society, traditional leaders, and development partners from Ghana’s five northern regions to assess progress and chart a forward path for inclusive governance.

The event concluded with a strong consensus on the need for broad-based advocacy, early reform implementation, and grassroots engagement to ensure that the gains made through legislation translate into real representation and impact.

Ghana vs Senegal (U-20 AFCON)

0

Players of the Black Satellites Players of the Black Satellites

Ghana’s Black Satellites take on defending champions Senegal this evening in a high-stakes Group B clash at the ongoing U-20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

The match, which kicks off at 6:00 PM GMT at the New Suez Stadium, is a must-watch as both teams search for their first win of the tournament following opening-day stalemates.

Ghana drew 1-1 with DR Congo, while Senegal was held by the Central African Republic.

Desmond Ofei’s men aim to bounce back strongly and are expected to maintain much of the squad that faced DR Congo. Jerry Afriyie could be handed a start after his lively cameo off the bench, while Abdul Sulemana, who was named Man of the Match in the opener, will marshal the midfield.

Musibau Aziz, Ghana’s goal scorer last time out, could lead the attack once again, with Gidios Aseako in goal and a familiar back four of Adjabeng, McCarthy Ofori, Aaron Essel, and Dacosta Antwi providing defensive cover.

Senegal, on the other hand, is expected to stick with the same lineup, including goalkeeper Mouhamed Sissokho, midfielder Cheikh Thiam, who scored against Central African Republic, and striker Ibrahim Dieng.

This is only the second-ever U-20 AFCON meeting between these two West African giants. Senegal won the first in 2019, but Ghana will take confidence from their 1-0 win over the Young Lions of Teranga in the 2023 African Games semi-final—a tournament Ghana went on to win.

A win for either side today would significantly boost their chances of progressing to the knockout rounds and could play a crucial role in determining the group’s pecking order.

We’re on the right track – Joyce Bawah

Senior Presidential Advisor and Special Aide to President John Dramani Mahama, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, has expressed strong confidence in the government’s early performance, asserting that the administration is on the right path.

In a Facebook post on Monday, May 5, Mogtari pointed to rising approval ratings and the decisive electoral mandate secured by the government as key indicators of progress and public confidence.

“So far, so great. I have been closely following the approval ratings of President John Dramani Mahama’s administration, and like many Ghanaians, I am confident that we are on the right track. With 57% of the popular vote, this government was given a clear and historic mandate, and 120 days in, the signs of progress are undeniable,” she said.

She also underscored the government’s efforts to build public trust through institutional reforms, including the recent launch of a new Code of Conduct and Ethics, aimed at promoting accountability and integrity within the public service.

“Today, [May 5], President Mahama takes a bold step forward. He will formally launch the Code of Conduct and Ethics, which is a framework that will be binding on all public office holders, government officials, politically exposed persons and their close associates. Why is this necessary?

“The answer is simple: it is to send a clear and unambiguous message that there is no room for conflicts of interest. That this government will not tiptoe around corruption. That we are here to draw a hard line between public trust and private gain,” he stated.

Acting Chief Justice Baffoe Bonnie (L) and suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo Acting Chief Justice Baffoe Bonnie (L) and suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo

The Chief Justice’s suspension follows the establishment of a prima facie case based on three separate petitions seeking her removal from office.

Minority Leader Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin (with a white paper) at the #SavetheJudiciaryDemo play videoMinority Leader Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin (with a white paper) at the #SavetheJudiciaryDemo

The Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, went in hard at President John Dramani Mahama during the #SavetheJudiciaryDemo on Monday, May 5, 2025.

Reading from the petition, which he described as ‘respectful and decent’, Afenyo-Markin heavily criticised almost every action of the Mahama government, using very strong words against the president and his party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Afenyo-Markin claimed that the democratic principles of the country are under attack, saying that “there is a frightening and ominous cloud now looming over our republic as we march today.”

He said that the 1992 Constitution of Ghana was under threat, with institutions mandated to safeguard the country’s liberties being infiltrated by “a ruthless cabal who are determined to cling to power at all cost — a third term agenda.”

He listed the supposed wrongdoings of the Mahama government as follows:

Establishing an unconstitutional ORAL:

The Minority Leader accused Mahama of starting his attack on Ghana’s democracy even before being sworn into office by establishing the ‘unconstitutional’ Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) preparatory committee.

He accused the president of using ORAL to target appointees of the previous New Patriotic Party government while freeing his appointees who were being prosecuted.

“Even before the NDC under President Mahama could assume the reins of government, we saw a violent attack on our constitutional order.

“They established a so-called ORAL, a committee without any legal basis or constitutional backing, which engaged in flagrant illegalities. That was the opening salvo in what has now become a full-blown campaign to dismantle our sacred democratic foundations,” he said.

Using mercenaries to prevent declaration of Ablekuma North parliamentary election results:

Afenyo-Markin also accused President Mahama of preventing the declaration of the Ablekuma North parliamentary election results, which he claims was won by the NPP candidate.

“Under candidate Mahama’s leadership, the NDC deployed mercenaries and thugs to polls across the country, and we all know what happened late last year. Honourable Akua Afriyie has won the Ablekuma North seat, the EC is asking for security to enable them to declare, NDC is saying they are not going to provide security.

“What is preventing the IGP — the previous IGP and the current IGP — from providing security for the Electoral Commission to complete its mandate?” he said.

Weaponising the security services:

The Effutu legislator also accused Mahama of weaponising the nation’s security services by deploying them to the homes of their political opponents.

He said that President Mahama’s government has used security operatives to ransack the homes of his political opponents, including former Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Ernest Addison, and former Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta.

He accused the government of running “a tyranny clothed in robes of democracy.”

An autocrat arbitrarily dismissing senior military officers:

Afenyo-Markin accused President Mahama of becoming autocratic.

He said that the president’s dismissal of senior military officials and invitation of military dictators to his inauguration are signs of an autocratic leader who wants to rule for life.

“Our military, once revered for its non-partisanship, is now being painted in NDC colours. This is a dangerous betrayal of the republic.

“…President Mahama no longer sees himself as a president; he fancies himself as an autocrat and ruler for life.”

Mahama relentlessly attacking the judiciary:

The Minority Leader also accused the president of attacking the judiciary, with the Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, being his latest target.

He claimed that the president wants to have a judiciary that bows to the will of a “dictator”.

GHS reassigns Programme Managers, Deputy Directors in major reshuffle

0

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has announced a significant reshuffle affecting several senior personnel, including Programme Managers and Deputy Directors across the country.

The reassignments, which take effect from May 19, 2025, were outlined in an official notice signed by the Acting Director-General of the GHS, Professor Samuel Kaba Akoriyea.

The GHS said the changes are intended to improve efficiency and ensure a responsive and well-coordinated health system nationwide.

“This reassignment is part of a broader national strategy to strengthen the health system. You are therefore requested to supervise the proper handing over and release the Managers and Deputy Directors concerned to their new stations by the given date and communicate dates of assumption of duty to this Office,” he stated.

The reshuffle affects 13 senior officials, including regional directors, programme managers, and medical superintendents.

“Private citizens, including former Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Ernest Addison, and former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, have had their properties seized, their rights violated, and their dignities stripped,” he added.

He also accused the government of hypocrisy, noting that while it had previously criticised the expansion of the Supreme Court, it had now appointed seven new judges under questionable circumstances.

“You know the process of appointing judges to the Supreme Court is not what has been used. So this reset is a negative reset,” he said, urging judicial staff not to remain complacent.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin further cautioned against political vengeance.

“I also want to take this opportunity to draw the attention of the nation to come to terms with the fact that there must be an end to bitterness. If this vicious cycle of ‘you did it to me; I will do it to you’ continues, there will be no hope for our democracy,” he said.

He warned that such partisan actions could have future consequences for current judicial staff, especially with the possibility of a new government in 2028.

“I am humbly calling on all Judicial Service staff to think deeply about tomorrow. Don’t be too comfortable because today some government officials are promising you promotions, so you don’t want to speak out. We will speak up for the sake of posterity,” he added.

The NPP was joined by several allied political parties, including the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), National Democratic Party (NDP), People’s National Party (PNP), and the Ghana Union Movement (GUM).

Nothing will break in Ghana if CJ remains at post – Ahiagbah

0

The Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has cautioned President John Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) against interfering with the judiciary.

He warned that any attempt to remove the Chief Justice could destabilise the foundation of Ghana’s democracy.

Speaking on JoyNews‘ The Pulse on Monday, May 5, Mr Ahiagbah said: “Nothing will break in this country if the Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkonoo, remains.

“If the President cannot strengthen the judiciary, he should leave it alone.”

Mr Ahiagbah accused the NDC of exploiting weaknesses in the legal framework to carry out a politically motivated campaign against the Chief Justice. According to him, the move is not based on any breach of the law but is a calculated political agenda disguised as a legal process.

“This whole agenda has been cooked,” he said. “The law is only being used to give effect to their politics. It’s not about legality — it’s about politics. And that’s what makes it dangerous.”

He emphasised that Ghana’s democratic structure is built on three equal arms of government — the executive, legislature, and judiciary — each designed to act as a check on the others. Undermining one, especially the judiciary, threatens the entire system.

“If you touch the judiciary, you unravel the democracy. The judiciary is the guardian of the rule of law,” he asserted. “Any attempt to politically influence or remove the Chief Justice should be treated as taboo. It’s a line that must not be crossed.”

Some of the cars the president donated Some of the cars the president donated

On Monday, May 5, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama formally declared two vehicles he had received as gifts and immediately handed them over to the state.

The declaration took place at the Jubilee House during a brief moment following the official launch of the Code of Conduct for Political Appointees, a new policy framework aimed at reinforcing ethical standards and combating corruption within the government.

The code outlines clear guidelines on gift declarations, conflict of interest, asset disclosures, and the use of public resources, marking a significant step in the Mahama administration’s drive to promote integrity and accountability in public office.

The handover was witnessed by a small group of senior government officials and presidential staff. The two gifted vehicles were seen being driven and inspected within the Jubilee House grounds before being officially transferred.

This move forms part of a broader effort by President Mahama to enforce strict asset declaration protocols.

Earlier in the day, the President issued a stern warning to political appointees who had failed to declare their assets, stating that they risk immediate dismissal if they do not comply by Wednesday, May 7, 2025.

Under the new directive, defaulting appointees will forfeit three months’ salary and will also be required to contribute one month’s salary to the MahamaCares Trust Fund, a newly established initiative aimed at providing financial assistance to individuals living with chronic diseases across the country.

‘Come to my house and take it’ – Abdul Razak dares Mohammed Polo over 1978 award

0

The 1978 African Footballer of the Year award and Abdul Razak The 1978 African Footballer of the Year award and Abdul Razak

Abdul Razak has launched a scathing attack on fellow Ghanaian football legend Mohammed Polo after the latter cast doubt on his 1978 African Footballer of the Year award.

In a fiery interview with Kessben TV, Razak laughed off Polo’s suggestion that he didn’t deserve the continental honor, bluntly telling his former teammate to come and retrieve the trophy himself if he believes it’s rightfully his.

According to Razak, Polo is not among the greatest Ghanaian players and should leave that judgment to the public. He also dared Polo to come for the award if he truly believes he deserved it.

“Polo talks as if he’s the best, but in the history of Ghanaian football, he does not come close to the GOAT level. He must understand that greatness is not self-proclaimed; it is earned, and the people will decide. The award is in the house, he should come for it or report it to CAF,” Razak stated.

This comes after Polo, in a separate interview, hinted that Razak didn’t deserve the African Footballer of the Year award in 1978.

Nonetheless, Razak maintains that while his decisive role in Ghana’s victorious 1978 Africa Cup of Nations campaign was crucial in earning him the prestigious award, he does not claim to be the greatest footballer in Ghana’s history.

“I don’t blow my own horn, I leave that to the public and the journalists to judge. The records are there. Let people decide who was the best,” he added.

Mahama gov’t to table bill reversing renaming of public universities by Akufo-Addo

0

The Mahama administration is set to introduce a bill in Parliament to rename the C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (CKT-UTAS) and several other public universities across Ghana.

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu made the announcement during the swearing-in of the Governing Council of CKT-UTAS in Accra, stating that the move is part of a broader review of university naming policies—particularly institutions established or renamed under former President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration.

CKT-UTAS, founded in 2021 to offer practical and technical education, has faced ongoing infrastructure challenges. Its name has also sparked debate, with some stakeholders questioning the rationale behind naming the school after C.K. Tedam.

“We’ve held consultations with the academic community, traditional leaders, alumni, students, and civil society. Based on those discussions, the name C.K. Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences may change, potentially aligning with the institution’s original vision,” Haruna Iddrisu stated.

He clarified that the renaming initiative is not meant to disregard the contributions of individuals after whom the schools were named, but rather to restore institutional identities rooted in their historical and educational missions.

“This is about preserving the foundational ethos of our universities, not erasing legacies,” he added.

Other universities likely to be affected include the University of Mines and Technology and Abdulai Salifu University. The Education Ministry is expected to lay the bill before Parliament in the coming weeks to formalize the proposed name changes.

The 7th UDS Africa Leadership Lecture Series featured Her Royal Highness Queen Nozizwe Mulela, wife of His Majesty King Misuzulu KaZwelithini of the Zulu Nation in South Africa and Managing Director of Eswatini Bank in the Kingdom of Eswatini as the Guest Speaker.

Her Royal Highness Queen Nozizwe Mulela, the first woman to be invited to speak at the UDS Africa Leadership Lecture Series since its establishment, presented a lecture on the theme: “Redefining Leadership for Africa’s Future: Ethics and Transformation.”

She noted the critical importance of ethical and transformative leadership among African leaders to foster sustainable and inclusive development.

According to her, the significant challenge facing Africa today is the lack of ethical leadership, both on the continent and across the world.

She urged African leaders to be willing to serve and to prioritise the interest of the ordinary people.

“This is the continent rich in everything that mankind needs, we need good leaders to exploit the advantages we have in Africa to better our lives,” she stated.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University for Development Studies, Professor Seidu Al-Hassan, thanked Her Royal Highness Queen Nozizwe Mulela for honouring the invitation of the university.

“Your Majesty’s stirring words called us to action and to uphold integrity, champion inclusivity, and reimagine leadership for a new Africa. Your message echoes deeply in the hearts of every listener, and for that, we are forever grateful,” he added.

IDEG backs electoral reforms to support women’s participation in local government

2 minutes read

The Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG) has called for the introduction of a mixed-member proportional representation system to help implement the Affirmative Action (Gender Equality) Law, 2024.

In a press statement issued after a forum held at the University for Development Studies on May 2, 2025, Mr Kwesi Jonah, a Research Fellow for Advocacy and Institutional Relations at IDEG, said changes to the electoral system were necessary to increase the number of women in local government.

He noted that women currently make up only four per cent of district-level representatives.

“With the law aiming for 30 to 35 per cent women’s representation in 2026 and 2027, we must move beyond our current electoral system to get real results,” Mr Jonah said.

He explained that under a mixed-member proportional representation system, political parties would be able to nominate women through proportional lists, giving them a better chance of being elected.

The Chief of Gukpegu, who also addressed the gathering, praised IDEG and NORSAAC for their engagement with local communities.

He said gender inequality was often shaped more by social attitudes than by cultural traditions, and called for continuous public education to help address the problem.

“We support the programmes run by IDEG and NORSAAC,” the chief said. “Through them, people at the grassroots level are learning more about governance.”

Participants at the forum called on political leaders to demonstrate the will to fully implement the law and push for reforms that would help Ghana achieve its gender equality targets.

“If a gift is received during an official engagement and its estimated value exceeds GH¢20,000, it must be declared. Upon leaving office, the gift must be surrendered unless expressly permitted by the President to retain it,” he stated.

He further added, “As for hampers and gift items, no government funds, including internally generated funds, are to be used to purchase or distribute hampers. The only exception is modest gifts given to staff as a reward for excellence or retirement.”

The President also noted that for government institutions that distribute hampers or gifts as part of their corporate or commercial policy, express approval for the budgeted expenditure must first be obtained from the Office of the Chief of Staff.

“All official or unofficial travel outside Ghana must receive prior approval from the Chief of Staff’s office. After each official trip, a report must be submitted, and any imprest retired within 14 days of return,” he added.

President Mahama also issued a stern warning regarding the acquisition of state property by government appointees.

“No political appointee under this administration is permitted to purchase state assets, whether land, vehicles, shares, or buildings, directly or indirectly. If you attempt to do so and are found out, your appointment will be terminated,” he warned.

Mahama is not a retaliatory president – Stan Dogbe

0

Deputy Chief of Staff Stan Dogbe has dismissed accusations that President John Dramani Mahama is engaging in retaliatory politics following the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

His response comes after Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin alleged that the President was using his authority to settle political scores—claims made during a protest organized by the “Save the Judiciary” coalition, which presented a petition at the Jubilee House on Monday, May 5.

Addressing the group after receiving the petition, Mr. Dogbe strongly refuted the claims, stating that all actions taken by President Mahama are grounded in the 1992 Constitution.

“We are happy that your process started this morning [Monday, May 5] and ended very peacefully. That in itself is a very strong message about the democracy that President Mahama wants to instil,” Dogbe said.

He rejected the notion that the President harbours a retaliatory agenda, emphasizing Mahama’s longstanding reputation as a unifying leader.

“If it were the case, like over the past 8 years, I am sure that the retaliatory politics that we talk about wouldn’t have been the case. Your referencing retaliatory politics is an admission that the 8 years of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo were not the best,” he added.

“You are assured that President Mahama, as every Ghanaian knows, is not one of those politicians; he doesn’t believe in retaliatory politics. He is described as ‘too much father for all persons’. Whatever decisions that are being taken now are in line with our 1992 Constitution,” Dogbe stated.

The demonstration, which saw the participation of five opposition parties, was organized in protest of what the coalition describes as a politically motivated attempt to undermine the independence of the judiciary.

Appointees who breach Code of Conduct to face strict sanctions – Mahama

0

President John Dramani Mahama has issued a stern warning to political appointees, declaring that his administration will not hesitate to apply strict sanctions to anyone who violates the newly launched Code of Conduct, regardless of their status or influence.

The Code, officially launched on Monday, May 5, sets clear ethical boundaries for public officials. It prohibits, among other things, the awarding of government contracts to oneself, family members, or close associates—actions President Mahama described as a betrayal of public trust.

Addressing the matter, President Mahama underscored the seriousness of the new policy.

“Coding in state companies that deal with government or with your ministries, using insider knowledge for personal benefit, awarding contracts that are connected to yourselves or your close family,” he cautioned.

He emphasized that consequences for such breaches would be non-negotiable, stating that sanctions could include reprimands, suspensions, or even dismissals.

The President also highlighted the need for full transparency and disclosure from all appointees.

“If you are a dormant partner in any business engaging with any business even outside your ministry, you must disclose it in writing to this office.

“Not through a telephone call, not through a relative, but you must submit an official declaration. Failure to do so will result in disciplinary action,” he warned.

The new Code of Conduct is part of the Mahama administration’s broader efforts to improve accountability, integrity, and ethical governance across public service institutions.

2.4 million Ghanaians vulnerable to food insecurity – Report

0

More than 2.4 million Ghanaians representing 7.4 per cent of the population between March and May this year are currently classified as vulnerable to food insecurity, a new report has revealed.
The number is projected to slightly decrease by two million people (6.3 per cent) from June to August owing to ongoing government interventions in agriculture and health sectors.
The Food and Agriculture Organisation defines food insecurity as “A situation where people lack access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and preference for an active and healthy life.”
The report titled March 2025 Food and Nutrition Security Situation Ghana: A Cadre Hormonise Analysis was developed by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture’s Statistics, Research, and Information Directorate (SRID), in collaboration with the World Food Programme (WFP) and the Permanent Interstate Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel (CILSS).
The report with the objective to evaluate the impact of factors causing food and nutrition insecurity, including the dry spell in the eight regions of the country in 2024, attributed the problem to climate change and economic pressures on vulnerable communities.
It used the Cadre Harmonisé (CH) analytical framework, a widely used tool in West Africa for assessing acute food and nutrition insecurity.
“Within the West Africa Sub-region, Ghana fared better than all her neighbours except Cote d’Ivoire and Benin,” the report released in March stated.
The report emphasised the urgent need for expanded social protection and targeted interventions to protect the most vulnerable populations.
The report said the food insecurity situation was particularly dire in the northern regions, which experienced prolonged dry spells in 2024, affecting food production and livelihoods.
“Although Ghana has fared better than most countries in the sub-region, this figure is still concerning,” the report states.
It said urgent action was needed to link those vulnerable groups to existing social protection programmes to buffer the effects of economic and environmental shocks.
The report said despite the challenges, Ghana’s performance compared favourably to other West African nations.
The report revealed that only Côte d’Ivoire and Benin had lower proportions of vulnerable populations.
Nonetheless, it warns that complacency could reverse the progress made.
“The government must continue and expand resilience-building efforts to ensure long-term food security,” the report recommends.
“Projects such as the Feed Ghana Programme and the Aqua-Cage Fish Project should be scaled up, especially in districts identified as being in crisis or emergency conditions,” it added.
The report called for increased investment in early warning systems, climate-resilient agriculture, and community-based nutrition programmes to prevent further deterioration.
It also emphasised the importance of data-driven policymaking and inter-agency coordination to tackle the root causes of hunger.
The report expressed government’s commitment to food security as a national priority aligned with regional and global development goals.

Watch as Afenyo-Markin lists the ‘sins’ of President Mahama, NDC

Bawku Conflict: God has exposed those who peddled ‘wicked lies’ against me

0

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President of Ghana Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President of Ghana

Former Vice President of Ghana and 2024 NPP presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, says God has exposed those who, during the 2024 elections campaign, peddled lies about him regarding the Bawku crisis.

The age-long Bawku conflict escalated few weeks to last year’s elections following accusations by opponents of the New Patriotic Party that its presidential candidate, Dr Bawumia who is a Mamprusis, was supporting Mamprusis against the other faction, the Kusasis.

This led to the Kusaug Traditional Area banning the NPP from engaging in any political campaign in the area.

However, despite the National Democratic Congress’ accusations and its pledge to end the conflict if elected into government, the conflict continues resulting in the death of a number of people.

Speaking in Bolga in the Upper East Region, during the NPP thank you tour, Dr Bawumia decried the unfortunate politicisation of the crisis and fatalities.

“The politicisation of the crisis in Bawku is very unfortunate because some people do that for their own parochial interests, not the peace and stability of the area.”

“They played politics with the situation and went round lying to the people that I was behind it. They said I was buying guns for people to fight. These were the lies they spread against me.”

“By the grace of God, many people have now seen their lies and the truth. Those who peddled these lies have now been exposed. This should be a lesson that nobody should play politics with the Bawku issue”, Dr Bawumia said.

He called for a collective effort to restore lasting peace in Bawku saying “the peace of the area should be the paramount interest of all of us, not personal ambitions”.

“As politicians, let us be careful in using chieftaincy issues to do politics. The NDC have done it and it is now hanging around their neck. I want peace in Bawku more than anybody and I pray the mediation team being led by Otumfuo will be able to bring much-needed peace in Bawku”, he added.
