Ghanaian Afrobeats artiste King Promise has expressed gratitude to fans and promised to return to the stage to pick up more awards after winning his first award at the ongoing 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs), currently being held at the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre.

The “Terminator” hitmaker was awarded Best Afropop Song of the Year, marking his first win out of ten nominations on the night.

Taking to the stage, King Promise thanked his supporters and acknowledged their vital role in his success.

“Super, super thankful for this award. Shoutout to the whole fans. It’s because of you people we dey here. Big love, big love. I will be back,” he said.

The award is a step in what many believe could be a big night for the Afrobeats musician, who is also in the running for the Artiste of the Year title, arguably the most anticipated category of the night.

He faces stiff competition from Stonebwoy, King Paluta, Kweku Smoke, Team Eternity Ghana, and Joe Mettle.

Jerry Afriyie scored a late goal to help CD Lugo rally from two goals down to secure a 2-2 draw against Gimnàstic in the Primera Federacion on Saturday.

The Black Satellites forward left camp in Egypt to rejoin Lugo following a mutual agreement between the club and the Ghana Football Association.

His return was vital and decisive as he delivered a Man of the Match performance to lead CD Lugo from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw to boast their chances of survival in the Primera Division.

The 18-year-old was handed a starting role despite arriving barely 48 hours before the match.
Gimnastic, who were playing at home, dominated the game initially, opening the scoring in the 28th minute.

Things went from bad to worse for Lugo just before half-time after Joan Oriol doubled the advantage for the hosts.

However, Afriyie inspired his teammates to a comeback, setting up Lizancos with 23 minutes left on the clock.

The Ghana international transitioned from provider to scorer, snatching a late equalizer in injury time for the visitors.

The U20 star has now scored three goals and delivered two assists in eight league games for Lugo.

After 36 games, Lugo now lies in 15th position with 43 points, just one point above the relegation zone.
With just two games to end the current campaign, the Ghanaian international’s performance will be a welcome boost as his side aims to avoid the drop zone.

His goals, assist, and skill set will be of great benefit to the Spanish side.

As part of its ongoing efforts to improve healthcare in the community, the Anyako Youth Association has donated a range of essential medical equipment to the Anyako Health Centre, marking Phase II of its commitment to strengthening local health delivery.

The items – presented during the 2025 Anyako Youth Summit – include a refrigerator, washing machine, infrared thermometer gun, blood pressure apparatus, glucometers with strips, and a carton of surgical gloves. These, according to Association President, Sergeant Unity Fiagbedzi, will help meet the facility’s immediate needs and improve service delivery.

He expressed deep appreciation to all donors and singled out contributors such as Mr. Samuel Nyadroh and Children, Madam Ruby Dzade, Madam Catherine Dzakpasu, Mr. Prudence Amegah, and Mr. Mawuli Dogbatse for their support.

However, he emphasized that the journey is not over. AYA has launched a self-help initiative to raise funds for a Hematology Analyzer (Full Blood Count Machine) – a crucial piece of equipment still needed.

Beyond healthcare, the Association is also focusing on other development areas including education, water, sanitation, and security. Educational interventions rolled out include the Anyako Basic Schools Quiz Competition, BECE Best Student Awards (Male & Female), Best Performing Students Awards from Basic 1 to JHS 3, and plans to launch a Best Teacher Award.

“We cannot do it alone. Our vision is collective,” said the AYA President. “We invite all hands on deck to build a stronger, healthier, and more prosperous Anyako.”

The items were formally handed over to the Health Centre by Togbi Aposa VI, Fia of Anyako-Lashibi, who commended the youth for their leadership in community development.

“The youth are the lifeline of every community,” Togbi Aposa VI noted. “Let’s rise beyond individual interests and unite for the development of Anyako.”

He was joined by National Secretary of the National Organisation of Anyako Konu Union (NOAKU), Mr. Bone Dzakpasu, who pledged the Union’s continued support and emphasized the need for unity.

Receiving the items, Physician Assistant in charge of the health centre, Madam Caroline Tomefa, expressed heartfelt thanks and made a passionate appeal for further assistance. She noted the urgent need for:

• A 20-bed admission ward for male, female, and pediatric patients
• A Hematology Analyzer to boost diagnostic capabilities
• Renovation of staff accommodation, including her bungalow and the nurses’ quarters, which she described as unsafe and demoralising.

“We often have to refer patients to Sacred Heart Hospital at Weme due to limited space,” she said. “We need help to serve our people better.”

Head of Public Relations Officer for Burniton Music Group, Vida Adumtwumwaa Boateng has reiterated her support for Stonebwoy to win the Artiste of the Year at the 26th TGMAs.

Vida claimed that the ‘Jejereje’ hit maker will set a record tonight by winning the Artiste of the Year for the third consecutive time.

Interacting with Regina Van Helvert, host of the TGMA red carpet on the night of the event, Vida underscored the need for the music industry to recognize hard work and consistency by artistes and award them accordingly.

“We are poised for victory tonight…We are preaching the fact that we need to protect consistency and hard work in the game and that is the reason why it is okay to win and win and win again,” she said.

Vida emphasized that Stonebwoy’s third win of the award will be an inspiration to up and coming musicians to work hard to achieve their dreams.

“So Stonebwoy is going to set that record tonight and give hope to the youngsters that you can win and always win. There’s nothing wrong with that,” she added.

Stonebwoy won the Artiste of the Year award back to back in 2023 and 2024. After fierce contest from King Promise in 2024, the ‘Ekelebe’ crooner took home the award to make it his second.

However, King Promise has returned in the category this year, with many tipping him to take the covetous prize. Other artistes nominated for the Artiste of the Year includes; King Paluta, Black Sherif, Kweku Smoke, Team Eternity and Joe Mettle.

On Friday, May 9, 2025, the heart of Kumasi pulsed not with chants of rivalry or competition, but with solemn remembrance and unity. Thousands of Ghanaians from Accra, Kumasi, and beyond gathered for the 24th annual walk to honor the 126 football fans who lost their lives in the tragic Accra Sports Stadium disaster of 2001. The streets, usually filled with the bustling rhythm of everyday life, became a moving tribute to the departed.

What made this year’s remembrance especially powerful was the remarkable unity across sporting communities. Executives and national team players from the Ghana Rugby Football Union walked shoulder-to-shoulder with football fans, students from KNUST, the Ashanti Regional Directorate of the National Sports Authority, various keep fit clubs, and even the bereaved family of recently murdered football enthusiast “Pooley.” It was a striking moment of solidarity—a symbolic handshake between sports, grief, and national healing.

Herbert Mensah, former Asante Kotoko chairman and now President of Rugby Africa and member of the executive board of World Rugby, once again led the walk, just as he has done every year since that fateful day in 2001. Through the May 9 Foundation, he has ensured the memories of the fallen are never forgotten. The walk concluded with heartfelt donations of food items, products, and financial aid to families of victims—acts of compassion that echo the mission of the Foundation.

Speaking to the media, Mr. Mensah emphasized the significance of the event:

“We have done this for 24 years because of the relevance of the day and the respect we have for the departed souls. We will continue to observe it so long as God gives us life.”

This year’s observance carried a heavier burden, following the recent stabbing of “Pooley,” a devoted Kotoko supporter, during a league game in Nsoatre. It was a chilling reminder that while the 2001 disaster may be behind us, violence in sports remains a present threat. Mr. Mensah called on fans to cultivate greater tolerance, urging them to remember that “we are brothers and sisters off the field” and to channel the passion of sport into positive energy.

He further appealed to government and sports administrators to invest equitably in all sports, not just football. “The tragedy,” he said, “should inspire broader change—compassion, inclusion, and commitment to safety and development across all sporting disciplines.”

The participation of the Ghana Rugby Football Union underscored that spirit. As national team players and executives walked alongside football fans, they not only honored those who died but also made a powerful statement: true sportsmanship transcends the game. It unites, uplifts, and heals.

Supported by companies like Sunda International, Kivo Gari, and Interplast Ghana Ltd, this year’s remembrance walk was a testament to the resilience of Ghanaians—and a promise that the lives lost will never fade from memory.

May 9 is no longer just a date. It is a movement. A memorial. A message.

Bebe (Afua Asantewaa Aduonum) as l fondly refer to you, to say you have demonstrated bravery in your two successive Guinness World Records (GWR) attempts is an understatement.

The recent results- GWR citing failure to adhere to the five minutes break as the reason for not handing you them certification notwithstanding, I still consider you as my heroine.

Indeed, embarking on such an audacious attempt speaks volumes.

I salute you, and always will, taking into account what we both as well as the team went through before during and after the attempt.

And to capture what I deduce from the verdict from GWR in the local palance- de3 ode nade3 de benkum na 3gye, literally meaning; the owner of an item decides which hand he or she uses to receive it.

That is not to undermine the verdict by GWR, but for a woman, and a mother of three for that matter to embark on such a herculean task deserves a pat on her shoulder.

Sincerely, the enormity of the attempt had a toll on me and has still not recovered from the sleepless nights.
I made sure, what she will eat, drink, wear as well bathing was done within the limited five minutes- imagine the time she spends moving from the box to the tent and back to the box again all in five minutes- it was a ‘Serious Reggae Business’ as Lucky Dube of blessed memory captured in one of his albums.

Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) president Kwesi Nyantakyi and Kennedy Agyepong (Kenpong) two of the many friends who followed the attempt keenly at a point advised that we stopped the attempt midway saying, “… Kofi a friend denied himself sleep for two days and he forgot where he parked his car at the airport from a trip. Your wife has done so well, don’t let her continue, I beg you. Whether the Guinness World Records guys rule in her favour or not, we consider her a winner already.”

STARTED TIRED

Coming from a background of events-Ghana Outstanding Women Awards (GOWA), Miss Kidi Ghana, Africa Outstanding Women Awards, and Global Outstanding Women Awards, we ensured that although it was a World record attempt, we invested heavily by way of organization.

We had countless meatings-in person and virtual ahead of the attempt-deciding on where exactly to carry it out after GWR had done an internal application for her after the first attempt
Venues like the Times Square in New York, Dubai among other places emerged.
Some of the meetings ended without solutions; leaving the entire team living on the urge coupled with limited time ahead of the attempt.
Indeed, that had a toll on the team and the main character (Asantewaa).

RECCE/ MEDIA TOUR

Again to make sure that the attempt is executed successfully after we decided to roll it out in Kumasi, the Accra-Kumasi stretch became a regular route. There were days we plied the road twice in a day, all to make sure everything was in place.

Even the issue of where exactly in Kumasi to host it was an issue-thankfully the Ashanti Region National Sports Authority (NSA) jumped in and offered the Heroe’s Park Annex.

We squeezed water from stone by using the limited time at our disposal ahead of the attempt to embark on media tours, and Kumasi Media platforms like Akoma FM, Sika FM, Kesben FM, Y-FM, Pure FM and other media organizations were of great help.

MEETING OTUMFOU

As tradition and courtesy demands, we decided to seek blessings and approval of the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and officially announce the attempt to him and his council of elders.

But that did not happen a silver platter (Started tired). We faced a lot of impediment- l believe it happened on the blind side of the highly respected king.

Thankfully, Gladys Owiredu, Asantewaa’s manager succeeded in reaching out to an official at the Manhyia palace, who arranged for the meeting with the great Ashanti King.

And when we finally did meet with the Asantehene, it was worthwhile.He encouraged and adviced us.

SUPPORT

Event organizers will bear me witness that securing sponsorship lately is no joke,-we combed everywhere; moving from one office to the other.
Some like Nasco Electronics, Perla Mineral Water, Essential Cosmetics, Ike’s Cafe (Kumasi) among others, however, responded positively.

INGRATITUDE

My wife and family have come under intense social media attack after the first attempt which I personally don’t have a problem with probably because of my collected self.
Unfortunately, our critics saw nothing wrong with that until the infamous interview that the writer decided to highlight on the portion that stoked the public debate, reducing the former Vice President’s kind gesture to a common lozenges.

Ingratitude is foreign to my family’s nature, our presence at Dr Bawumia’s house after the first attempt to say thank you was enough evidence of how grateful we were.

The former Vice President reaching out to offer support, taking time off his busy schedule to show up at the venue was commendable and shows how proactive he was.

Unfortunately, my wife came under intse cyber bully and was tagged a word I don’t want to use. From my personal investigations, a lot of the comments was a calculated attempt to drug her name into the mud.

May be she didn’t communicate the way she should have on the said show. I want to use this platform to apologize profusely on her behalf.

Some of the attacks were people who enjoyed their sleep in the comfort of their homes only to wake up to see her still singing (without sleep).

Indeed, Ghana has shown us massive support and love, and we would eternally be grateful for that.

Lower-tier side Golden Kick FC have reached the final of the MTN FA Cup for the first time following their win over Attram De Visser on Saturday, May 10.

The Accra-based Division One side recorded a 3–1 win in a spirited semifinal clash at TNA Stadium in Tarkwa.

The breakthrough came in the 16th minute when Attram De Visser’s goalkeeper, Dawuud Ishaque, accidentally turned the ball into his own net. Golden Kick capitalised on the momentum just seven minutes later, with David Amuzu doubling the lead

After the break, substitute Bless Ege sealed the win with a sharp finish early in the second half. Attram De Visser, who had famously eliminated Hearts of Oak in the quarterfinals, managed a late goal in the 87th minute through Precious Yaw Gyimah, but it was too little, too late to spark a comeback.

This remarkable victory places Golden Kick among a rare group—only the third Division One club to reach the FA Cup final since 2011. They join FC Nania, Okwahu United (2016), and Bofoakwa Tano (2021) in this feat.

Golden Kick will face the winner of the other semifinal tie between nine-time champions Asante Kotoko and Berekum Chelsea, scheduled for Sunday, May 11, 2025, at the same venue.

Kickoff is at 15:00 GMT.

Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu

The Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has disclosed that out of close to 25,000 applications received by the Operation Recover All Loot Committee, (ORAL) 280 applications were found to have merit and from this number, 65 individuals have so far been investigated in connection with allegations of corruption and misappropriation of state resources.

Speaking on TV3 Keypoints and monitored by GhanaWeb on Saturday May 10, 2025, he disclosed that approximately 2,500 of the total applications were formally processed, and from that figure, 280 submissions were deemed to have merit.

He noted that those that were deemed to have merit were subsequently passed on to the president, who forwarded them to the Attorney General, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, for appropriate legal consideration.

“280 of the applications were found to have some merit and so they were submitted to the president who gave it to the Attorney General.

“If you look at the report, they have what they call persons of interest, persons they believe should be spoken to understand what happened. That has been done,”, he stated.

He continued,”… (Sic) 65 people have been invited, they’ve been interrogated, questioned. Some of them have been granted bail, and some of them actually are on trial on a number of the cases.”

Kwakye Ofosu emphasised that ORAL’s core mandate was not to prosecute but to serve as a channel for receiving complaints, evidence that could potentially trigger formal investigations.

He also defended the Attornet General’s regular updates on ongoing investigations.

“Some have asked why the Attorney General gives updates. But this is important. The fight against corruption should not be shrouded in secrecy. ORAL was a specific campaign promise. Like all promises, its delivery must be accounted for,” he added.

The ORAL Committee, which was formed on December 18, 2024, was tasked with identifying and retrieving looted state assets.

International credit rating agency S&P Global Ratings has upgraded Ghana’s sovereign credit rating from ‘Selective Default’ (SD) to ‘CCC+’, citing progress in the country’s debt restructuring efforts under President John Mahama’s administration.

The upgrade, announced on Friday, comes just 122 days after Mahama assumed office following the December 2024 elections. S&P attributed the decision to Ghana’s advancing negotiations with commercial creditors, including the successful Eurobond exchange in October 2024, and nearing completion of loan restructuring talks with external lenders.

Stable outlook

The agency maintained a stable outlook for Ghana’s foreign and local currency ratings, highlighting “supportive economic growth, ongoing fiscal reforms, and improved external position” as key factors. However, it cautioned that high debt servicing costs and weak public financial management during election cycles remain risks.

“The upgrade reflects authorities’ recent steps to restructure remaining commercial debt,” S&P stated. “We understand the government is nearing completion of its offers to restructure loans to external creditors, primarily commercial banks.”

Economic recovery and challenges

Ghana’s external metrics have strengthened, with gold export earnings rising by 53.2 per cent in 2024 and foreign exchange reserves recovering to nearly $4.6 billion. Inflation, though still high at 21.2 per cent, is declining due to a stronger cedi and energy prices.

Yet, challenges persist. S&P noted that Ghana’s debt sustainability remains vulnerable to exchange rate fluctuations, with external debt making up 62% of government liabilities. Tax administration weaknesses and spending overruns, particularly in election years, also pose fiscal risks.

Mahama’s reform agenda

Since taking office, President Mahama’s government has prioritised expenditure cuts, IMF-backed fiscal reforms, and legislative changes, including amendments to the Public Financial Management Act. The administration has also committed to clearing arrears uncovered after the 2024 elections, though an official audit is still underway.

S&P acknowledged Ghana’s resilient growth—5.7 per cent in 2024—driven by industrial and services sector rebounds. However, it warned that cocoa production faces long-term threats from illegal gold mining, which degrades farmland and diverts labour.

Future risks and opportunities

While the stable outlook suggests cautious optimism, S&P warned that ratings could be downgraded if fiscal discipline weakens or debt servicing pressures rise. Conversely, faster reserve accumulation or stronger public finance management could lead to further upgrades.

The upgrade marks a milestone for Ghana’s economic recovery, but as S&P noted, “the road ahead remains fraught with challenges.”
