Alcaraz made to suffer in four-set win over Dzumhur

0

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz was forced to fight for his place in the French Open fourth round with a testing victory over a dogged Damir Dzumhur.

The second seed had looked to be making light work of his opponent with a two-set lead, before a revival from the Bosnian pushed their encounter into a fourth set under the lights on Court Philippe Chatrier.

Spaniard Alcaraz, seeking to becoming the first man since compatriot Rafael Nadal in 2020 to retain the Roland Garros title, eventually ground out a 6-1 6-3 4-6 6-4 success.

“I didn’t enjoy it too much,” said the 22-year-old. “I suffered quite a lot but I’m happy to have played a good match with Damir.

“That’s why it’s difficult to win Grand Slams because you have to maintain your focus over three or four hours.

“The first two sets were under control and then he decided to play deeper and more aggressive. My energy went down and it was hard to push, but I had to give everything I had inside. I’m proud to get the win in the end.”

Alcaraz will face 13th seed Ben Shelton next after the American beat Italy’s Matteo Gigante 6-3 6-3 6-4 earlier on Friday.

Alcaraz’s form during his second-round win over Fabian Marozsan had been patchy and Friday’s first meeting at ATP Tour level against Dzumhur looked set to be a much smoother affair.

Having shrugged off two early break points, he reeled off five successive games to wrap up the opening set inside 30 minutes, with his opponent looking exasperated at times as he struggled to contain the man seen as the one to beat on the Paris clay this year.

The second set followed in much the same fashion, and while Dzumhur, 33, did have his chances with break points in the second and sixth games, he lacked the weapons to cause Alcaraz any concern.

A double fault sealed the two-set lead for the Spaniard, but then the errors started to creep into his own game in the third as Dzumhur found another gear on the other side of the net.

After a brief pause to receive treatment on a knee injury, the Bosnian – seeking to reach the fourth round of a Slam for the first time – finally got the break he had been fighting for.

Alcaraz wasted three immediate chances to break back at 4-3 down, and a further two as his opponent served out the set.

Dzumhur’s resurgence continued into the fourth as he broke the frustrated Spaniard at the first time of asking, and Alcaraz was forced to watch more break points of his own come and go unconverted.

But Dzumhur was only ever going to hold him off temporarily.

Alcaraz, starting to show glimpses of the clinical form on show in the opening two sets, won four successive games, and while he was broken back when serving for the match, he again broke Dzumhur to close the tie as the clock neared midnight in the French capital.

Rune to face Musetti next but injured Fils withdraws

Danish 10th seed Holger Rune also reached the fourth round by beating France’s Quentin Halys in five sets.

Rune, who stunned Alcaraz in the final to win the Barcelona Open last month, had to come from two-sets-to-one down in a 4-6 6-2 5-7 7-5 6-2 victory.

Rune will next face Italian eighth seed Lorenzo Musetti, who beat Argentine Mariano Navone in four sets.

Elsewhere, 12th seed Tommy Paul won his second five-set match in a row to set up a fourth-round tie with Australian 25th seed Alexei Popyrin.

The American, 28, ousted Russian 24th seed Karen Khachanov 3-6 6-3 7-6 (9-7) 3-6 6-3, while Popyrin recorded a 6-4 7-6 (13-11) 7-6 (7-5) win over Portugal’s Nuno Borges.

American 15th seed Frances Tiafoe beat compatriot and 23rd seed Sebastian Korda 7-6 (8-6) 6-3 6-4 and will face unseeded German Daniel Altmaier next.

Altmaier reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time by defeating Serbia’s Hamad Medjedovic 4-6 6-3 6-3 6-2.

French 14th seed Arthur Fils, who overcame injury to beat Jaume Munar on Thursday, has pulled out of Saturday’s third-round tie with Russian 17th seed Andrey Rublev.

Rublev will face Italian top seed Jannik Sinner or Czech Jiri Lehecka in the fourth round, with the pair due to meet on Saturday.

Dr Bawumia describes GH 50 million bail bond for Wontumi as ‘onerous’

The 2024 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed disappointment after efforts to meet the bail conditions of GH¢50 million for the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, proved unsuccessful. Wontumi is currently in custody at the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) in connection with an ongoing criminal investigation.

Addressing the press on Friday, May 30, 2025, Dr Bawumia revealed that arrangements to visit Chairman Wontumi had failed.

“We had made arrangements to come and see our Chairman Wontumi, who was arrested and has been held in custody by EOCO. We wanted to check on him and see how he was doing. All necessary preparations were made,” he stated.

Dr Bawumia also criticised the bail conditions imposed on Wontumi.

“I must put on record that the bail conditions set for Chairman Wontumi, GH¢50 million, are very onerous. I don’t know how many people in Ghana own property worth that amount. It appears designed to delay his release,” he remarked.

He further expressed dissatisfaction over being denied access to Wontumi despite prior notice.

“We are very disappointed in our inability to see him, especially after making the necessary arrangements. We’ve communicated our disappointment and will continue efforts to ensure we get to see him,” he added.

The former Vice President also appealed for calm among party supporters.

“I want to plead with all of you to remain calm as we work behind the scenes to ensure his release. I believe we will succeed, but we must remain peaceful and not take the law into our own hands. It’s important that we follow due process and ensure Chairman Wontumi is released safe and sound,” he urged.

Chairman Wontumi was taken into custody by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) after undergoing interrogation by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Tuesday, May 27, 2025.

He is currently under investigation for alleged involvement in multiple criminal offences, including fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.

Deputy Attorney General, Justice Srem-Sai, has disclosed that a second phase of the investigation reportedly links Wontumi to a broader international organised crime syndicate.

Although EOCO granted him bail of GH¢50 million, his legal team has yet to meet the conditions required for his release.

Wontumi’s lawyers meet bail conditions

0

The legal team of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has successfully met the bail conditions set by the Economic and Organised Office (EOCO).

However, a pending court motion is reportedly preventing his immediate release.

Speaking to journalists on Friday, May 30, lead counsel Andy Appiah-Kubi assured party supporters and the public that Chairman Wontumi was in good health and stable condition while in custody.

“He is good, he is healthy, and there is nothing to worry about,” Appiah-Kubi said, calming concerns that had grown since Wontumi’s arrest.

The NPP stalwart had been granted bail by EOCO on Wednesday, May 28, to the tune of GHS 50 million with two justified sureties. According to Appiah-Kubi, those bail conditions have now been fully met.

“We have been able to provide the sureties. That one, I can assure you,” he confirmed. He went on to express his heartfelt appreciation to Abetifi MP and former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong, whose intervention helped secure the necessary documentation to satisfy the bail terms.

“I am very grateful to Honourable Bryan Acheampong, who has supported me in providing the documents. He has brought documents that are over and above the value of the money required,” Appiah-Kubi added.

Despite fulfilling the bail conditions, the legal team encountered an unexpected legal hurdle. Appiah-Kubi disclosed that a court motion had been filed—unknown to him at the time—which has complicated the process of securing Wontumi’s release.

“Unknown to me, an application was filed that prohibits us from securing his release,” he revealed.

The motion in question, filed by Marfo & Associates at the High Court in Accra, seeks a review of the bail conditions and may be aimed at either altering or suspending the terms previously set by EOCO. The exact content and legal grounds of the motion are yet to be made public, but sources close to the case suggest it could delay Wontumi’s release for several more days.

Chairman Wontumi was initially arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Tuesday, May 27, before he was picked up by EOCO for further investigation. He is currently under investigation for alleged financial misconduct, including possible links to financial losses to the state.

The case has sparked significant political and public interest, with top NPP figures, including former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, visiting the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) in a bid to check on his welfare.

As of Friday evening, heavy security remained stationed around the NIB premises, and party supporters continued to gather in solidarity as legal proceedings unfolded.

Parliament recommends ratification of WTO agreement on fisheries subsidies

0

By Elsie Appiah-Osei

Accra, May 30, GNA- The Committee on Food, Agriculture, and Cocoa Affairs and the Committee on Trade, Industry, and Tourism of Parliament has recommended that Ghana ratifies the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies.

This move, according to the Committee, aims to promote sustainable marine resource management and curb harmful fisheries subsidies that contribute to overcapacity, overfishing, and Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing.

Moving the report of the Committee on the Floor of Parliament for the adoption  of the House on Friday, Dr Godfred Seidu Jasaw, Chairman of the Committee on Food, Agriculture, and Cocoa Affairs, said the Committee considered the Agreement a significant step in global efforts to curb harmful fisheries subsidies that contributed to overcapacity, overfishing, and IUU fishing, promoting sustainable marine resource management.

“Mr Speaker, the ratification would also highlight Ghana’s commitment to global cooperation, aligning with its roles as host of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and as a founding member of the African Union (AU),” he said.

Dr Jasaw, noted that the implications of the ratification included enhancing measures against IUU fishing and other unsustainable fishing practices; improving data collection and reporting on fisheries indicators; increase transparency among WTO members and supporting global efforts to sustainably manage fisheries resources.

The others he noted were the benefit from fair trade practices in both domestic and international markets; contributing to job creation, poverty alleviation, national food security, and good foreign exchange earnings

Among the challenges and concerns the Committee’s report enumerated were potential impact on local fishing communities, particularly small-scale and artisanal fishers who relied on government support such as subsidies on premix fuel, outboard motors, and fishing gear.

“There is the need for careful consideration of domestic implications and mitigating measures to protect vulnerable fishing communities,” the report said.

The Committee recommended that the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture finalised a new Fisheries Bill, which will incorporate the provisions of the WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies.

“The Committee will closely monitor the drafting and passage of the new legislation to ensure it reflects Ghana’s international commitments and socio-economic realities of fishing communities,” the report said.

Some Members of Parliament (MPs) who contributed to the debate on the adoption of the Committee’s report called for sustainable practices with an emphasis on environmentally friendly practices, reduction of plastic waste, and promotion of local materials for fishing gear.

Mr Habib Iddrisu, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP for Tolon, seconding the Motion raised concerns about potential effects on fishermen’s livelihoods, with plans to mitigate adverse effects.

Mr Murtala Mohammed, a National Democratic Congress MP for Tamale Central, and the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, called for investing in infrastructure and equipment to support fishing communities as well as the improvement of working conditions and resources available to officials in these areas.

Madam Emelia Arthur, the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, said the WTO agreement prohibited subsidies to vessels engaged in IUU fishing, relevant to Ghana’s current “yellow card” status from the European Union.

She told Parliament that the expected outcomes of the ratification would include improved sustainability, efficiency, transparency, and cooperation among WTO members, potentially boosting Ghana’s fishing industry.

“Mr Speaker, potential outcomes will improved Industry Sustainability that will enhance measures against IUU fishing and unsustainable practices economic benefits where fair trade practices and sustainable fishing may lead to economic gains and increased Transparency for better data collection and reporting among WTO members,” she said.

Wontumi meets EOCO’s GH₵50m bail conditions

0

Chairman Wontumi has been in custody since Tuesday Chairman Wontumi has been in custody since Tuesday

The legal team of the embattled Ashanti Regional Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, has confirmed that they have fulfilled the GH₵50 million bail conditions set by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

In an interview on Friday, May 30, 2025, lead counsel Andy Appiah-Kubi told JoyNews that all necessary documentation for the two sureties has been completed, with significant assistance from former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong.

“We have been able to provide the sureties, that one, I can assure you, and I’m very grateful to Honourable Bryan Acheampong, who has supported me to file the documents,” Appiah-Kubi said.

He added, “He has brought his documents, which go over and above the value of money that is required. So I thank you very much.”

Chairman Wontumi was granted bail on Tuesday, May 27, requiring GH₵50 million with two justified sureties, following his arrest by EOCO on suspicions of fraud, money laundering, and other financial crimes. Until Friday, his team had only secured one surety.

However, Appiah-Kubi revealed that despite meeting the bail conditions, Wontumi’s release is stalled due to a fresh legal application filed earlier in the day.

“My client is not going home tonight. We encountered a challenge that needs to be addressed before we can go forward,” he explained.

“Unknown to me, there was an application to frustrate what we are doing, so we will deal with it on Monday. It is an application that was not filed by my good self, but that prohibits us,” Appiah-Kubi noted.

He disclosed that EOCO officers were prepared to inspect the properties listed by the sureties, but the pending court application legally prevents them from proceeding until the issue is resolved.

“They had agreed to do the inspection tonight, so all the officers are there, but the challenge that I faced is legal. We can’t do it,” he said.

Appiah-Kubi also addressed confusion over Wontumi’s whereabouts, contradicting earlier claims by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

Regarding Wontumi’s health, he dismissed rumours of a hunger strike and confirmed that Wontumi is receiving medical attention.

“We had brought him to meet with the former Vice President, but the situation we saw was difficult—to arrange this meeting, to pass through the crowd, to get the Vice President to see him and talk to him. So we had to take him back,” he recounted.

“I told you that his condition of health requires attention. So he’s receiving attention, and there’s nothing to worry about in respect of his health,” Appiah-Kubi assured.

The lawyer remains optimistic that once the court matter is resolved, Chairman Wontumi will be released by Monday, June 2.

Black Stars Lose To Nigeria, Eyes Third Place

0

THE BLACK Stars of Ghana succumbed to a 2-1 loss to their fierce rival NIgerai in the 2025 Unity Cup at Brentford’s GTech Stadium in Londn on Wednesday night.

The much changed Ghanaian side which lacked its main starters, with key players like Mohammged Kudus missing, showed resielience and promise but those were not enough to secure them the much-needed victory to play in the final.

The first half of the game started a bit slow as both sides tested out each other’s strength although Nigeria showed more willingness which resulted in their goals in the first 20 minutes.

The game eventually picked pace and the Nigerians grabbed the opening goal of the game through Cyrill Dessers in the 14th minute before Richard Simpson put the ball in his own net in the 19th minute to give the Nigerians a two-goal lead.

The Black Stars picked up form in the second half that saw the team create more chances and pin Nigeria into their half for a significant part of the half.

Ghana eventually pulled one goal back through substitute Brandon Thomas-Asante in the 70th minute but the Stars failed to find a second goal to force the game into extra time.

The result means the Black Stars will settle for a third-place finish if they win Against Trinidad and Tobago who also lost their opening game to Jamaia in a 3-2 thriller the previous night.

Head Coach Otto Addo speaking after the game said his side’s lack of aggression and cohesion in the first half was the decisive factor to their loss.

“Nigeria had a more mature team that could adapt faster, and we struggled with duels, pressing, and defensive structure,” he added.

Bawumia disappointed after failed attempt to visit Wontumi in custody

0

The 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed disappointment after he and other party officials were unable to visit the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, who is currently in custody.

Dr. Bawumia addressed the media outside the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) headquarters in Accra on Friday, May 30, 2025.

Wontumi’s lawyer reacts to claims of hunger strike

0

The lawyer for embattled Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has dismissed claims that his client is on a hunger strike in protest of his detention conditions.

According to Andy Appiah-Kubi, Chairman Wontumi is currently receiving medical attention at a clinic while in the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Friday, May 30, he confirmed that Wontumi has not been well since his detention began but rejected claims that he is refusing food.

His clarification follows comments by the Majority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyire, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, who alleged that Chairman Wontumi had refused to eat as a form of protest.

Describing the situation as “shocking,” Mr. Annoh-Dompreh said Wontumi was on a hunger strike and that there was a lack of official communication regarding his welfare.

However, Mr. Appiah-Kubi stated that he had not received any such information, revealing that he had shared a meal with his client just days ago.

“Two days ago in the evening, I had dinner with him. I’m going to see him now at EOCO. After that, he will respond whether this happened today or yesterday,” the lawyer said.

Chairman Wontumi is under investigation for alleged involvement in fraud, money laundering, and other financial crimes. He was granted bail set at GH₵50 million with two sureties, both to be justified.

So far, his legal team has secured only one of the required sureties, leaving him unable to meet the bail conditions for release.

Ghana secures $80m education boost through landmark partnership with SCALE consortium

0

Ghana’s education sector is set for a major transformation following the signing of a groundbreaking partnership agreement by the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, that brings in US$80 million in new funding to improve foundational learning and school quality across the country.

The agreement, formalised at a high-level ceremony at the Embassy of Switzerland in Accra on 28 May, brings together the System Change Architecture for Learning Excellence (SCALE) consortium—comprising three major philanthropic organisations, 10 cocoa and chocolate industry leaders, and the Global Partnership for Education (GPE).

With US$40 million raised by SCALE and an equal match from GPE’s Multiplier Fund, the total financing package now stands at US$80 million, aimed at driving improvements in literacy, numeracy, teacher training, and emotional and social wellbeing in schools nationwide. Combined with an additional US$38.8 million in supplementary grants, the new investment raises the total extra funding for the Ghana Accountability for Learning Outcomes Project (GALOP) to US$118.8 million.

“This is an opportunity for us—a shared vision and innovative financing for education that comes at a crucial time,” Minister Iddrisu stated during the event. “SCALE is an extension of the successes we’ve already achieved through GALOP, and Ghana has every reason to celebrate.”

Driving Systemic Change

SCALE is designed to overhaul how education is delivered and measured in Ghana, prioritising child-centered learning and evidence-based interventions. The new funding will support an expansion of GALOP’s reach from 10,000 to 16,000 schools, with over 14,700 kindergartens also set to benefit. The initiative will also launch the Ghana Education Evidence and Data Lab (GEEDLab) within the Ministry of Education, to improve decision-making and policy design.

Importantly, the funding targets cocoa-growing regions, where child labor remains a concern. Research from the International Cocoa Initiative (ICI) shows that quality education can significantly reduce child labor rates. SCALE’s Communities of Excellence programme will empower local districts to take an active role in shaping educational outcomes.

A Global Collaboration

The SCALE consortium includes philanthropic leaders such as the Jacobs Foundation, Fondation Botnar, and the UBS Optimus Foundation, alongside major industry partners including Nestlé, Mars, Ferrero, and Mondelez. The initiative builds on successful models like Côte d’Ivoire’s Child Learning and Education Facility (CLEF).

“SCALE offers not just funding, but access to a wide pool of expertise to transform how we apply evidence in education,” said Simon Sommer, Co-CEO of the Jacobs Foundation. “We expect more than 2 million children in over 100 cocoa districts to benefit.”

UBS Optimus Foundation CEO Tom Hall added, “This is a model of how collaborative giving can deliver impact at scale, by aligning the strengths of all partners.”

Andrea Studer, CEO of Fondation Botnar, emphasized the importance of holistic development: “Education must go beyond academics. It must foster empathy, resilience, and critical thinking—values that SCALE is championing.”

A Timely Investment

At a time when international aid to education is shrinking, Ghana’s innovative financing model stands out. With a global education funding gap estimated at US$100 billion, the SCALE initiative demonstrates how public-private partnerships can fill critical gaps and deliver long-term impact.

About SCALE:
SCALE (System Change Architecture for Learning Excellence) is a multistakeholder initiative co-designed with Ghana’s Ministry of Education, aimed at transforming educational systems for better learning outcomes, with support from leading foundations, global education partners, and cocoa and chocolate companies.

About GALOP:
GALOP is the Ministry of Education’s flagship programme to improve learning outcomes in underperforming basic schools across Ghana. Since 2020, it has directed over US$218 million toward improving education equity and accountability.

The application, filed on May 30, 2025, challenges the GHS 50 million bail, which his legal team argues is excessive and intended to prevent his release.

Wontumi was reportedly transferred to the NIB following his detention by the Economic and Organised Office (EOCO) as part of an ongoing criminal investigation.

Women’s participation in political leadership must go beyond mere rhetoric

Liberian Ambassador to Ghana, Her Excellency Musu J. Ruhle Liberian Ambassador to Ghana, Her Excellency Musu J. Ruhle

Liberian Ambassador to Ghana, Her Excellency Musu J. Ruhle, has emphasised that women’s participation in peace and political processes must transcend mere symbolism.

Speaking at the Conflict Prevention and Sustainable Peace Forum at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre in Accra on May 28, 2025, Ambassador Ruhle declared, “Representation alone does not equate to transformation. We must ask: whose voices are amplified, and whose remain silenced? Are we dismantling power structures or merely embellishing them?”

She cautioned, “While women are increasingly visible in peace processes and frameworks, their presence is often symbolic—prioritising appearances over substantive influence.”

The forum, convened to explore pathways for conflict prevention and sustainable peace, centered on women’s leadership during a high-level panel on democratic transitions.

Ruhle’s address grounded the discussion in pressing regional challenges: democratic erosion, political instability, and rising violent extremism.

Drawing on Liberia’s experience, she noted, “We take pride in electing Africa’s first female president, Her Excellency Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.” However, she stressed that such milestones are insufficient without systemic change. “True empowerment requires structural reform in political parties, electoral financing, customary law, and transitional justice.”

Her remarks urged the dismantling of entrenched barriers to women’s empowerment, ensuring their transition from the margins to the core of political power.

Ambassador Ruhle emphasised that women’s voices must resonate not only in formal power structures but also from grassroots communities.

“We must embrace radical inclusion, amplifying not only educated women or those in leadership but also women in markets, refugee camps, and informal settlements. These women bear the heaviest burdens and often possess the most profound insights.”

Addressing the region’s persistent conflicts and political volatility, she asserted, “Peace is not merely the absence of conflict; it is the presence of justice and dignity. Security means women living free from fear, exclusion, and economic disadvantage.”

The Ambassador also highlighted Liberia’s campaign for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for 2026–2027 under the theme “Towards a Just and Peaceful World.” She pledged that, if elected, “Liberia will leverage this platform to champion inclusive peace and gender-responsive leadership through our proposed Feminist Foreign Policy.”

About the Forum

The 2025 Conflict Prevention and Sustainable Peace Forum, themed “Amplifying Women’s Voices in Democratic and Political Transitions,” brought together political leaders, diplomats, civil society representatives, and regional experts from Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Australia. The event was organized by the Australian High Commission in collaboration with the Embassy of Liberia in Ghana, the High Commission of Sierra Leone in Ghana, the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP), and the West Africa Democracy Solidarity Network (WADEMOS).

‘I will defend my statements vigorously in court’

Vice President of IMANI Africa, Bright Simons has been sued by Ibrahim Mahama Vice President of IMANI Africa, Bright Simons has been sued by Ibrahim Mahama

Vice President of IMANI Africa, Bright Simons, has pledged to vigorously contest a GH¢10 million defamation lawsuit filed against him by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Engineers & Planners (E&P).

Bright Simons described the lawsuit as a Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation (SLAPP), aimed at stifling scrutiny of powerful individuals and their businesses.

The lawsuit, filed at the Accra High Court on May 28, 2025, stems from an April 19 article by Simons titled “Ghana Provides a Lesson in How Not to Nationalise a Gold Mine,” published on his website and shared on his X account.

Ibrahim Mahama in his lawsuit, claims that Bright Simons’ assertions about E&P’s financial struggles, including reduced operations at Gold Fields’ Damang mine and creditors being “up in arms” over delayed payments, were false and damaging to his reputation and business.

Mahama is seeking GH¢10 in damages, a public apology, and an injunction to prevent further statements.

However, in a statement issued on May 29, 2025, Bright Simons rejected the allegations, insisting that his article was based on factual industry data, including Gold Fields’ reports on production declines at Damang.

“There is nothing in the comments complained of that can remotely be described as defamatory,” he said, dismissing the claims as baseless.

He argued that the phrase “up in arms” was a common expression for dissatisfaction, not defamatory, and vowed to subpoena creditors to testify about their demands if necessary.

He also labelled the lawsuit an attempt to intimidate analysts and activists from examining companies like E&P, particularly those linked to public resources or political figures.

“It is designed to scare away analysts and activists from even the most basic scrutiny of Mr. Ibrahim Mahama and his company,” he stated, emphasising the need for accountability in such cases.

He added, “The fear of lawsuits has created an atmosphere of censorship in Ghana whenever the interests of powerful and wealthy companies are placed in the spotlight. I for one do not intend to honour this tradition.”

Simons affirmed his commitment to defending the case, stating, “Accountability, as I like to say, is a marathon,” and promised to prove in court that his statements were justified and in the public interest.

Bawumia and Afenyo-Markin granted access to Wontumi [Video]

Former Vice President and 2024 NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, along with the Majority Leader, has been granted access to the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

Chairman Wontumi was recently transferred to the custody of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) following his detention by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) as part of an ongoing criminal investigation.

The transfer has heightened political tensions and attracted public attention. Dr. Bawumia is reportedly leading efforts to satisfy EOCO’s bail conditions, which include a GH₵50 million bond with two justified sureties. These conditions remain unmet.

Following his transfer, several NPP Members of Parliament, senior party officials, and a large number of supporters have converged at the NIB premises to show solidarity. Security in the area has since been intensified.

Wontumi was initially arrested on Tuesday, May 27, by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service and later handed over to EOCO. Though granted bail on Wednesday, May 28, his continued detention has sparked public outcry and political mobilisation.

On Thursday, May 29, Minority MPs staged a protest march from Parliament to EOCO headquarters in Accra, demanding Wontumi’s immediate release. The protest caused significant traffic disruptions and prompted an increased police presence. It ended on Friday, May 30, when the Minority returned to parliamentary proceedings.

As developments unfold, growing calls for due process, transparency, and restraint continue to shape the political and legal discourse surrounding the case.

Chelsea Make History With Comeback Win Over Betis In Conference League Final

Chelsea produced a stunning second-half comeback to beat Real Betis 4-1 in the UEFA Conference League final, becoming the first club to win all five major UEFA trophies.

The Blues trailed at the break in Wroclaw after Abde Ezzalzouli fired in a deserved opener for Betis, assisted by the ever-influential Isco. But with 25 minutes remaining, Chelsea turned the game on its head.

Cole Palmer was the catalyst, delivering two pinpoint crosses from the right. Enzo Fernandez nodded in the equaliser from Palmer’s inswinger, before Nicolas Jackson bundled home at the near post just five minutes later.

Substitute Jadon Sancho made it 3-1 with a sublime curling finish following a clever pass from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. Moises Caicedo sealed the win in stoppage time, his long-range effort taking a deflection before finding the net.

The victory not only handed Chelsea their first Conference League title but also completed their sweep of European honours—the Champions League, Europa League, Conference League, Super Cup, and the now-defunct Cup Winners’ Cup.

It also marked a bold reward for head coach Enzo Maresca, who fielded his strongest XI in the final despite criticism earlier in the campaign.

Remarkably, Chelsea also ended a long-standing Spanish dominance in European finals, becoming the first foreign side to beat a Spanish team in a final since 2001. Spanish clubs had won 27 consecutive European or international finals involving one of their teams.

Revoking Nyaho-Tamakloe’s ‘founding member’ status likely to be considered at NPP NEC meeting – JFK

0

The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has publicly distanced the party from recent remarks made by Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, warning that the former diplomat could face disciplinary action, including the possible revocation of his status as a founding member.

This comes after Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, criticised the party’s leadership over its handling of the arrest of Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

Reacting to how the arrest of the Chairman has been handled so far, he declared that the party currently “has no leadership.”

Speaking in an interview on JoyNews on Friday, Mr Kodua expressed disappointment over Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe’s conduct, arguing that his recent commentary does not reflect the principles and values expected of a founding figure within the party.

“As a founding member of our party, we expect him to be part of the National Council of Elders, providing wise counsel to the rank and file—not becoming a disruptive voice,” Mr Kodua said.

“That is not the hallmark of a founding member of a political party.”

The NPP’s leadership, he noted, considers Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe’s public posture to be unhelpful at a time when the party is focused on internal reorganisation and national cohesion ahead of the 2024 general elections.

“We have several founding members, and none behave in this manner. At this critical moment, we need positive energy,” he added.

Mr Kodua revealed that the issue would be raised at the party’s upcoming National Council meeting, where disciplinary actions, including the possibility of stripping Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe of his founding member status, may be considered.

“This is something I intend to pursue at our next National Council meeting. If it involves removing his founding member status, because as a party we don’t need this type of behaviour at this material moment,” he stated.

$58m National Cathedral pit must be investigated – Dormaahene

0

Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Dr. Nana Freduah Agyemang Badu II, the Dormaahene and President of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to launch an investigation into the controversial National Cathedral project.

His remarks follow widespread public concern over the project’s financial management, particularly the reported $58 million allocated to its development.

Speaking during Mahama’s ‘Thank You’ tour on Friday, May 30, the Dormaahene underscored the need for justice and transparency in national governance.

“Don’t fear anyone in your pursuit of justice. If you are afraid and fail to do what is required, Your Excellency, it will not be beneficial,” he emphasized.

While expressing uncertainty over the full details of the project, he insisted that the matter deserved a thorough probe.

“Regarding the National Cathedral and the $58 million—whether the person involved is a pastor, a chief, or whoever they may be—As for that pit. I don’t understand the entire situation, but it must be investigated,” he stated.

He further warned Mahama against ignoring public outcry and urged him to ensure accountability, regardless of who might be implicated.

“Don’t let anyone convince you that it’s not worth investigating. If you ignore it, Ghanaians will be disappointed in you,” the traditional leader cautioned.

The Ghana National Association of Farmers and Fishermen (GNAFF) has paid a courtesy visit on the Comptroller-General of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), signalling a renewed commitment to inter-agency collaboration aimed at safeguarding national food security.

Led by GNAFF’s Greater Accra Regional Chairman, Vincent Mensah, the delegation introduced the association’s newly elected regional executives and explored areas for strategic partnership.

Discussions focused on addressing challenges in the agricultural and fisheries sectors, particularly those related to illegal food exports, border enforcement, and immigration issues affecting rural livelihoods.

Key topics included the need for stronger border controls to prevent food smuggling, enforcement of immigration policies that protect the economic interests of farmers, and the development of initiatives to support agricultural sustainability.

Mensah also proposed the establishment of a dedicated GIS hotline for GNAFF members to report illegal activities and access timely, community-relevant information.

In response, GIS Comptroller-General Samuel Basintale Amadu welcomed the engagement and emphasized the importance of enhanced coordination on labour migration.

He highlighted the need for improved data integration to ensure that farmers and fisherfolk are accurately represented in national employment statistics.

Regarding the proposed hotline, Amadu confirmed its readiness and assured the association it would be made available.

He also encouraged GNAFF to collaborate closely with traditional leaders—chiefs and queen mothers—recognizing their influential role in grassroots agricultural development.

The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to ongoing dialogue and inclusive policymaking.

Both institutions affirmed the importance of collaborative efforts to strengthen food systems and advance Ghana’s sustainable development goals.

This engagement marks a significant step forward in aligning institutional leadership with grassroots stakeholders to address food security and economic challenges within Ghana’s agricultural landscape.

NPP has no leadership; where is Chairman Wontumi? – Nyaho-Tamakloe questions amid arrest

Dr Nyaho-Nyaho Tamakloe/Source: Myjoyonline

A founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has criticised the party’s leadership for what he describes as poor handling of the arrest and detention of Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

Speaking on JoyNews on Friday, Dr. Tamakloe expressed disappointment over the silence and inaction of the party’s national executives following Wontumi’s detention by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). According to him, the NPP “has no leadership” in its current state.

Wontumi was arrested on Wednesday and remains in custody after failing to meet bail conditions set at GH₵50 million with two sureties to be justified. Supporters of the party have described the bail terms as politically motivated and excessive. His arrest has triggered protests, including a demonstration at EOCO’s headquarters on Thursday, where party faithful demanded his release.

Dr. Tamakloe, a former chairman of the Ghana Football Association and a respected political voice, warned that the absence of strong leadership is deepening internal divisions within the party and weakening its cohesion.

His comments come at a time of rising tension in the NPP. While some members see the EOCO action as politically charged, others, including Dormaahene Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II, have urged respect for due process.

Meanwhile, security has been tightened at the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) headquarters, where Chairman Wontumi has been transferred.

We’ll work to ensure Wontumi’s release

Former Vice President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has assured party supporters that the party’s leadership will work to secure the release of the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

Speaking to party faithfuls at the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) office in Accra on Friday, May 30, Dr. Bawumia expressed concern over the GHS50 million bail condition imposed on Wontumi by the Economic and Organised Office (EOCO), describing it as a deliberate obstacle.

“I believe that this was just set to prevent his release,” he said.

He, however, emphasised the importance of following the legal process and urged supporters to remain calm while steps are taken behind the scenes.

“We are going to follow the due process, the legal process, to make sure that he is released as soon as possible. I want to plead with all of you to remain calm as we work behind the scenes to make sure that he is out.

“I believe that we will be successful. But we have to be calm to make sure that we do not take the law into our own hands,” Dr Bawumia stated.

Bawumia, Afenyo-Markin granted access to Wontumi at NIB Headquarters

We don’t know Chairman Wontumi’s whereabouts

0

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) says it does not know the current location of its Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

This follows the party’s inability to meet with Wontumi at the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) headquarters in Accra on Friday, May 30.

Wontumi was reportedly transferred to the NIB after being detained by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) as part of an ongoing criminal investigation.

Despite being granted entry to the NIB premises at Ridge, former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin confirmed after exiting the facility that they were unable to see Wontumi.

Speaking on Channel One Newsroom on Friday, May 30, Deputy General Secretary of the NPP, Haruna Mohammed, expressed concern about the development, describing the situation as “very surprising.”

He drew comparisons with a past incident involving former Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidohu, who was detained by the then Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) on treason charges.

Mohammed pointed out that at the time, then President John Dramani Mahama and NDC leadership were granted access to meet with Anyidohu during his detention.

“No, we have not been able to find Chairman Wontumi. This is something that is very surprising to all of us,” Mohammed said.

“I can remember that when Koku Anyidohu, who was a deputy general secretary of the NDC, was arrested and sent to the BNI cells for treason charges, former President John Dramani Mahama and the party leadership were granted access to go in and meet with him. I don’t know what has changed now.”

He further criticised the current government’s approach to handling such high-profile cases, stating, “This government is interested in persecution, and I don’t know what they want this country to end up.”

Chairman Wontumi transferred to NIB; NPP supporters storm office

0

Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako—widely known as Chairman Wontumi—has been transferred to the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) after being held at the headquarters of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

The transfer comes amid growing public and political interest in the case. Reports indicate that NPP flagbearer for the 2024 elections, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is actively leading efforts to meet the GHS 50 million bail conditions imposed by EOCO.

Several Members of Parliament and senior NPP officials have visited the NIB facility, where Chairman Wontumi is currently held. A large crowd of party supporters has gathered, and security at the NIB premises has been significantly increased.

Wontumi was first arrested on Tuesday, May 27, by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service. After his release by the CID, EOCO immediately took him into custody.

Although EOCO granted him bail on Wednesday, May 28, the conditions—GHS 50 million with two justified sureties—have not yet been met.

On Thursday, May 29, Minority Members of Parliament marched from Parliament to EOCO headquarters to protest his continued detention, demanding his immediate release. The protest caused traffic disruptions and attracted a strong police presence. The MPs returned to Parliament the following day, ending their boycott.

Meanwhile, Deputy Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Justice Srem-Sai, confirmed that Wontumi is under investigation for multiple serious offences, including fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.

In a statement posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Justice Srem-Sai said EOCO is leading the investigation and has begun asset recovery efforts related to suspected proceeds of crime.

“Suspect Bernard Antwi Boasiako, a.k.a. Chairman Wontumi, is under investigation for various criminal offences, including fraud, causing financial loss to the State, and money laundering,” the Deputy Attorney General stated.

Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has criticised the bail conditions imposed on Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, describing them as deliberately excessive and aimed at frustrating his timely release.

Addressing party supporters and the media at the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) premises in Accra on Friday, May 30, Dr. Bawumia expressed serious concern over the GHS50 million bail bond with two justified sureties set by the Economic and Organised Office (EOCO), which remains unmet.

“The bail condition that has been set for Chairman Wontumi’s bail of 50 million is very onerous. I do not know how many people in Ghana have property worth GHS50 million. I believe this was just set to prevent his timely release,” Bawumia stated.

He further assured party faithfuls of his commitment to pursuing legal avenues to secure Wontumi’s release, while urging calm among supporters.

“We are going to follow the due and legal process to make sure that he is released as soon as possible. I want to plead with all of you to remain calm as we work behind the scenes to make sure that he is out, and I believe that we will be successful. We have to be calm and not take the laws into our own hands,” he added.

The former Vice President’s comments come amidst heightened political tension surrounding Wontumi’s arrest and continued detention.

Several NPP Members of Parliament, senior party executives, and supporters have been gathering at the NIB in a show of solidarity since his transfer from EOCO.

Chairman Wontumi was first arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Tuesday, May 27, and subsequently picked up by EOCO, which granted him bail the following day.

However, the strict conditions have prevented his release, drawing criticism from various quarters of the political spectrum.

The situation escalated on Thursday, May 29, when Minority Members of Parliament staged a protest march from Parliament to EOCO headquarters demanding Wontumi’s immediate release.

Meanwhile, Deputy Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Justice Srem-Sai, confirmed in a statement that Chairman Wontumi is under investigation for serious criminal charges, including fraud and money laundering.

Extend trainee allowances to engineering students – IET President tells gov’t

0

At the induction ceremony of new engineering professionals in Kumasi, the President of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, Ghana (IET-GH), Engr. Henry Kwadwo Boateng, delivered a powerful and urgent message highlighting a significant gap in national policy—the exclusion of engineering students from trainee allowance programs recently restored for nurses and teachers.

While the restoration of training allowances for nurses, announced by President John Dramani Mahama during his visit to Bono East Region, was a positive development for the healthcare sector, it raised an important question: why are engineering students not included in this vital support?

Engr. Boateng challenged the belief that trainee allowances are only necessary for professions facing personnel shortages.

In today’s Ghana, the greatest shortage is in engineering, technology, and skilled trades, key sectors driving industrialisation, infrastructure development, and innovation.

Despite their crucial role in building roads, power plants, factories, and digital systems, engineering students at Ghana’s technical universities, vocational institutes, and polytechnics receive no allowances, little formal recognition, and no policy-backed motivation.

This neglect has consequences: many skilled artisans and technicians at Ghanaian job sites come from neighbouring countries, not due to a lack of Ghanaian interest or talent, but because of insufficient support for local trainees.

Engr. Boateng’s message is clear: engineering students and trainees deserve equity. For Ghana to achieve industrialisation and self-reliance, trainee allowances must be extended beyond nurses and teachers to include engineering students, technologists, and technicians. This is about national progress and ensuring the future workforce is motivated and supported.

He called on President Mahama and policymakers to broaden trainee allowances to cover the engineering sector, stating that empowering these future engineers is essential to building a “Ghana Beyond Aid” based on local expertise and innovation.

To the newly inducted engineers, Engr. Boateng urged them to see themselves not just as professionals, but as changemakers and innovators. Their role includes leadership and advocacy, championing engineering and influencing policies that will shape the sector’s future.

This moment marks more than a professional milestone; it is a pivotal point in Ghana’s development. Providing trainee allowances to engineering students is key to equity, motivation, and building a stronger, self-sufficient nation.

Wontumi arrest: JFK condemns Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe’s ‘Where is NPP Chairman’ comments

0

The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Justin Frimpong Kodua, has condemned founding member Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe over his recent remarks about the party’s leadership and the handling of the arrest of Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

Responding to Dr. Tamakloe’s claim that the party “currently has no leadership,” Mr. Kodua expressed deep surprise and disappointment.

“I am very surprised that Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, a founding member of our party, chose not to criticize the manner in which Chairman Wontumi was arrested,” Mr. Kodua said.

“He saw nothing wrong with the rough and romble way our Chairman was taken into custody. That in itself is troubling.”He asked.

According to Mr. Kodua, the party is struggling to meet the harsh bail conditions set for Chairman Wontumi.

“As I speak, they have imposed unreasonable bail conditions which we are finding very difficult to meet,” he explained.

Mr. Kodua said he was shocked that Dr. Tamakloe did not sympathize with the challenges the party is facing.

“It’s surprising that a founding member of the party does not sympathize with the trauma, the issues, and the challenges that the party is going through, but instead chooses to criticize the very party he helped to establish.”

He also took issue with Dr. Tamakloe’s remarks about former party leaders.

“I’m even more surprised that he refers to former chairpersons as though they would have done the same,” Mr. Kodua said.

“If those people truly respected the rule of law—most of them being constitutional lawyers—they wouldn’t have stayed silent. They would have spoken out and supported our members who have been taken to the NIB and EOCO,” he said.

Mr. Kodua described the ongoing situation as deeply concerning and unacceptable.

“We have detained a citizen of this country from Tuesday to Friday, and he’s facing outrageous bail conditions. If this is not political persecution, then what else is it?”

He concluded by affirming the party’s right to protest and demand justice.

“We want the world to know what is happening in Ghana and what is happening to our Chairman. We have every right to demonstrate our displeasure,” he said.

“Yes, we can go to court as an option but nothing also stops us from going to the EOCO headquaters to solidarize with our Regional Chairman “He asserted.

I wasn’t happy with Afenyo-Markin sitting on the floor at EOCO – Dormaahene

The Dormaahene and President of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs, Osagyefo Dr. Fredua Agyemang Badu II, has taken a light-hearted jab at Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin over his dramatic protest at the headquarters of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra.

Reacting to the sit-in staged by Minority MPs demanding the release of New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako—popularly known as Chairman Wontumi—the Dormaahene expressed his disapproval of Afenyo-Markin’s conduct during the protest.

“I’m not saying Ghanaians shouldn’t support him, but the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, going to EOCO and sitting on the floor—I wasn’t happy with it. He’s an honourable man. He should let me know next time he wants to go to such a place so I can send someone to follow him with a seat,” the Dormaahene quipped, lacing his critique with humour.

While expressing admiration for Chairman Wontumi, the chief stressed that no one is above the law and that due process must take its course.

“Chairman Wontumi—I really like him. But even though I like him, I’m not saying the law should not take its course. If I’ve done something wrong, I must be investigated. That’s what the law says,” he stated.

His remarks came in the aftermath of a highly publicised protest on Thursday, May 29, when Minority MPs marched from Parliament to EOCO’s offices to protest what they called the political persecution of Wontumi and the misuse of state institutions.

The demonstration caused a major disruption, blocking traffic and attracting a heavy police presence.

Wontumi was arrested on May 27 in connection with alleged financial misconduct involving the Ghana Export-Import Bank (EXIM BANK). Though he was granted bail by EOCO, the conditions—set at GH₵50 million with two sureties to be justified—had not yet been met at the time of the protest.

Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine

Ghana’s Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, took center stage at the 34th session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ), held in Vienna, Austria, from May 19–23, 2025.

Other members of Ghana’s delegation included Matilda Alomatu Osei-Agyeman, Ambassador and Permanent Representative to Austria and the United Nations, alongside officials from the Office of the Attorney General, Ministry of Justice, and the Embassy of Ghana in Vienna.

In a pivotal address under the theme, “Advancing sustainable, inclusive, science- and evidence-based solutions for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals for leaving no one behind,” Dr Ayine reaffirmed Ghana’s dedication to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the principle of “leaving no one behind.”

He detailed how Ghana is mainstreaming the SDGs into national policy, prioritising energy and education, and focusing on marginalised groups, including youth, persons with disabilities, and those in the northern regions.

Dr Ayine highlighted flagship initiatives such as the “Adwumawura,” a national apprenticeship program, and the “One Million Coders” project, both designed to equip youth with digital skills and foster entrepreneurship. These efforts, he emphasised, not only promote economic inclusion but also serve as preventive strategies against youth involvement in crime.

Regarding women, he projected the creation of the Women’s Development Bank and dedicated funding in the 2025 budget aimed at empowering female entrepreneurs.

Dr Ayine also emphasised Ghana’s increasing focus on environmental protection, calling for stronger international cooperation to combat environmental crimes.

Thematic discussions focused on addressing new, emerging, and evolving forms of crime, including crimes that affect the environment, smuggling of commercial goods, trafficking in cultural property, and other crimes targeting cultural property.

In a statement delivered on behalf of the Vienna-based African Group, Ambassador Matilda Alomatu Osei-Agyeman reaffirmed the continent’s commitment to the full implementation of the Kyoto Declaration and preparations for the 15th UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice. She stressed the need to address both the effects and root causes of transnational organized crime, linking crime prevention to sustainable development in line with Agenda 2030 and the African Union’s Agenda 2063.

On the margins of the CCPCJ, Dr Ayine held a meeting with the UNODC Executive Director, Ghada Waly. They focused on enhancing collaboration to combat corruption and strengthen criminal justice systems, discussing strategies such as leveraging technology, improving cross-border cooperation, and building capacity through partnerships, in line with UNODC’s priorities to address corruption, organized crime, and promote accountability and robust legal frameworks, particularly within African contexts.

Other bilateral meetings included those with officials from strategic countries and groups, such as Japan, the UK, the European Union, South Africa, and the USA, to enhance collaboration in the areas of crime prevention and criminal justice.

Ghana co-organised a strategic side event with the UNODC on enhancing good governance and the use of evidence in policymaking, presenting the evaluation of the Ghana National Anti-Corruption Action Plan (NACAP). Dr Ayine and Ambassador Osei-Agyeman shed light on Ghana’s experience in the fight against corruption.

Other side events that Ghana’s delegation actively participated in focused on the United Nations Convention Against Cybercrime, torture investigations and oversight, the Bangkok and Nelson Mandela Rules, and operational networks against links.

Ghana’s active participation, led by Attorney General and Minister for Justice Dr Ayine and the collective efforts of the African Group, underscored the importance of inclusive, evidence-based, and technology-driven approaches to crime prevention. As preparations begin for the 15th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, the outcomes of this session set the stage for deeper cooperation and stronger institutions worldwide.

Ghana remains steadfast in its commitment to peace, justice, and the rule of law, working hand-in-hand with the United Nations and the international community to build a safer, more just world for all.

The Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, established by the United Nations Economic and Social Council, serves as the UN’s principal policymaking body on crime prevention and criminal justice. Its annual sessions foster dialogue, policy formulation, and the exchange of best practices among member states.

Media personality and gender advocate, Josephine Oppong-Yeboah, has urged female appointees in the Mahama government to exhibit exemplary leadership and demonstrate that women are equally capable of holding high public offices in Ghana.

She said the appointment of women into significant government positions was a positive step towards gender inclusivity, but noted that these appointments must be backed by competence, integrity, and a commitment to national development.

Oppong-Yeboah, who has long championed women’s empowerment and good governance, called on the female appointees to shun all forms of corrupt practices and focus on delivering on their mandates to the benefit of all Ghanaians.

“This is a great opportunity for women to prove that we are not only capable but also ethical and competent leaders,” she said, adding “let this be a moment of pride for all Ghanaian women, and let the performance of our sisters in government inspire many more to aim high.”

Oppong-Yeboah encouraged the appointees to remain focused, work diligently, and uphold the trust reposed in them by the President and the people of Ghana.

According to her, the growing number of women in key leadership roles across Africa signals a gradual shift in traditional gender roles and expectations.

She stressed, however, that such progress must be consolidated by positive results and not be marred by scandals and underperformance.

“Leadership is about service. It’s about putting the needs of the people above personal interests. I urge our women in leadership to be the difference Ghana needs,” Oppong-Yeboah added.

She also appealed to the general public, especially the media, to support female leaders with constructive criticism and encouragement, noting that inclusive governance requires collective effort.

Better working conditions key to productivity gains

Good working conditions lead to productivity Good working conditions lead to productivity

The National Project Manager of the ILO’s Productivity Ecosystems for Decent Work initiative, David Macos, has emphasised the need to ensure proper remuneration for work as a key driver of productivity.

He noted that better working conditions and increased productivity are interconnected and often reinforce each other.

Speaking on the sidelines of a roundtable discussion on Productivity, Jobs, and Growth, held under the theme Productivity Ecosystems for Decent Work Project, Macos highlighted the shared understanding among stakeholders, Organised Labour, the Government, and the Ghana Employers’ Association, regarding the link between decent work and productivity.

“I think the solution lies in making our sectors more productive, but at the same time, more decent,” Macos stated.

“The conversation is about how social partners are trying to find a nexus between productivity and decent work. Unions and employers concluded that while productivity leads to better working conditions, improved working conditions are equally necessary to achieve higher productivity.”

Macos also disclosed that the ILO is collaborating with government agencies to develop policies aimed at creating systems that enhance productivity.

“We are working with the Ghana Statistical Service to generate productivity data for different sectors. This will support the government in crafting policies aligned with sectors that show high potential for productivity growth, such as extractives.

“However, sectors like manufacturing and agro-processing also stand out, not only for their productivity potential but also for their capacity to create decent jobs and foster linkages across the economy,” he added.

Bawumia calls for calm amid Wontumi’s detention

0

Former Vice President and 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has called for calm among party supporters following the continued detention of the NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi.

Dr Bawumia made the appeal during a visit to the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) premises, where he and other senior party figures were denied access to the detained party official.

Despite what he described as prior arrangements, the delegation was unable to see Wontumi, a development that has drawn sharp criticism from the NPP leader.

“We are very, very disappointed in our inability to see him. We had made prior arrangements, and we’ve expressed our disappointment,” Dr Bawumia told journalists.

He also criticised the bail terms set by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), describing the GH¢50 million requirement—backed by two justified sureties—as unnecessarily harsh and deliberately obstructive.

“I must put on record that the bail conditions set for Chairman Wontumi are very onerous. I don’t know how many people in Ghana have property worth GH¢50 million. I believe this was just set to prevent his timely release,” he stated.

Despite his frustration, Dr Bawumia reaffirmed the party’s commitment to due process, promising to pursue all legal avenues to secure the Chairman’s release.

“We are going to follow the due process, the legal process, to make sure that he is released as early as possible,” he said.

He concluded with a strong appeal to NPP supporters to exercise restraint and avoid any form of unlawful behaviour in response to the situation.

“I want to plead with all of you to remain calm as we work behind the scenes to ensure that he is out. I believe he will be successful. We must be calm and not take the law into our own hands.”

The continued detention of Chairman Wontumi has sparked political tension and drawn widespread attention.
