NPP supporters mass up at Wontumi’s residence as NIB withdraws officers

0

Supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) thronged the residence of the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, following an attempted arrest by officers from the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) and the Ghana Police Service on Friday, May 23, 2025.

The crowd, which steadily grew throughout the morning, gathered in protest against the presence of heavily armed security personnel who had earlier surrounded the property.

The motive behind the operation remains unclear. Chairman Wontumi, who was reportedly inside the house during the raid, assured officers that he would respond to their invitation on Monday, May 26, 2025.

As tensions escalated and party loyalists chanted slogans in defiance, the NIB reportedly ordered the immediate withdrawal of all officers from the scene.

While the atmosphere has since calmed, a strong contingent of NPP supporters continues to maintain a presence around the residence.

Addressing journalists, the party’s regional secretary, Kwame Adom-Appiah—who also serves as a member of Chairman Wontumi’s legal team—condemned the operation, describing it as unnecessary and poorly handled.

“When you are going to arrest someone and arrive with about 20 vehicles, when the person is neither a coup plotter nor has any intention to overthrow the government, I don’t think it is appropriate,” he said.

“Deploying that many cars is not only excessive but also a burden on the state. A simple invitation would have sufficed. And even if he failed to honour it, there are proper, lawful ways to effect an arrest.”

My husband is sleeping with his boss, I’m scared to lose him

File photo of a worried woman File photo of a worried woman

Dear GhanaWeb,

I’ve been married for over four years now. When we got married, things were difficult financially. At one point, my husband was unemployed, and I stood by him through it all. I even spoke to one of his friends to help him find a job because he was too shy to ask for help himself.

Eventually, his friend came through, and my husband landed a well-paying job. I was overjoyed. We have two children, and during the hard times, I was the one providing for our family. My husband is very hardworking, and I’ve always admired his dedication to his job.

But things started to change when his female boss entered the picture. She insists he accompany her everywhere, even though he’s not a driver or her personal assistant. He travels constantly with her, and anytime I express discomfort, he brushes it off, saying it’s because he’s smart and hardworking. He also tells me she pays him for the extra hours, so it’s worth it.

Still, something didn’t sit right with me. Then, I found a photo of the two of them at a pool—he was shirtless, and she was right beside him. When I asked about it, he casually said he had only taken her there and decided to swim too.

I tried to believe him, until a few days ago when I saw their chats.

What I found broke me. Photos of them in hotels—some where they were naked, others kissing, and several in pools and on beaches. Their messages were intimate and explicit. She had even sent him large sums of money, supposedly for him and the family. But I never saw any of that money. He continued to act like he was still struggling financially.

To make things worse, I found out he was recently promoted, something he never told me about. The messages made it clear: he’s in love with her. He’s not just with her for financial gain—he’s emotionally invested. He even talked about starting a family with her.

He has travelled with her to Dubai, lied to me about it, saying he was going to Kumasi for a new branch opening. He’s staying nights away, keeping secrets, and pushing us aside. I’m heartbroken.

I’m currently three months pregnant with our third child, and I don’t know what to do. Should I stay in this marriage for the sake of our children, or walk away with whatever dignity I have left? Is there still hope that I can be loved and happy again?

I’m lost, scared, and deeply hurt.

Armed security officials, purported to be officials of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), reportedly stormed the home of New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, on Friday, May 23, 2025.

Viral videos of the incident showed armed men at the entrance of the Ashanti Region NPP chairman’s home in Kumasi.

One of the videos showed security officials, some in police uniforms and others in plain clothes, alighting from white pick-up trucks.

Another video showed the supposed security officials knocking and banging at the main entrance gate of Wontumi’s home.

A report by Citi FM on Friday indicated that the security team was demanding access to the premises, which was locked on their arrival.

It is not clear why the security officials were at Wontumi’s home, but the government recently suspended the mining licence of his company, Akonta Mining, accusing it of engaging in illegal mining activities in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve in the Western Region.

Chairman Wontumi has refuted the accusation, stating that he is being targeted because of his bid to run for the National Chairmanship position of the NPP.

Government to borrow GH¢5.54 billion in May 23 auction

The government aims to raise GH¢5.54 billion in its treasury bills auction on May 23, 2025 The government aims to raise GH¢5.54 billion in its treasury bills auction on May 23, 2025

The government aims to raise GH¢5.54 billion in its treasury bills auction today, May 23, 2025.

This target is GH¢1.14 billion lower than the previous week’s.

In its last treasury auction, the government rejected more than GH¢2.59 billion in bids, despite falling short of its GH¢6.68 billion target, deepening concerns over waning investor appetite for domestic debt.

Total bids submitted for the short-term instruments amounted to GH¢5.35 billion, falling GH¢1.33 billion short of the auction target. This marked the third consecutive week of undersubscription.

The auction was heavily skewed toward the 91-day treasury bill, which received GH¢4.36 billion in bids. However, only GH¢2.09 billion was accepted.

Investor demand for the 182-day and 364-day tenors also remained weak, with the government accepting GH¢513 million and GH¢154 million, respectively, out of the GH¢731 million and GH¢270 million tendered.

Yields on all three tenors eased modestly, reflecting recent monetary policy trends.

The 91-day bill declined by six basis points to 15.10%, the 182-day slipped to 15.68%, and the 364-day bill dropped to 16.78%.

Kurt Okraku has cautioned people against defaming his personality Kurt Okraku has cautioned people against defaming his personality

Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku has warned that he will take on individuals who make disparaging and false claims about his personality to tarnish his image in public.

He stated that people are at liberty to criticise his administration regarding happenings in Ghana football when there are setbacks or challenges.

However, he abhors the act where some individuals resort to raining insults on his personality, accusing him of thievery allegations in an attempt to air their grievances to the football governing body.

Speaking in an interview with GhOne TV, Okraku cautioned that those who dent his reputation in the public domain with false allegations will be dealt with appropriately.

“When I’m asked this question, sometimes I try to be sarcastic, sometimes I try to be very nice, and sometimes I try to joke. Normally, I only want to react to be honest with you, especially in public.

“But every Black Stars player has a Ghanaian account. If you insult me, okay. But if you defame me, I will not take it lightly. So if I’m not a thief and you’re calling me a thief, then we will have problems,” he said.

The GFA boss has been at the center of vehement public criticisms regarding issues with the Black Stars, Ghana Premier League, and other footballing activities.

DR Congo strips ex-leader of immunity over treason charges

Joseph Kabila did not appear before the senate to defend himself Joseph Kabila did not appear before the senate to defend himself

The Democratic Republic of Congo’s senate has stripped former President Joseph Kabila of his immunity, paving the way for his prosecution over his alleged backing of rebels in the east.

Authorities have accused him of treason and war crimes, saying there was a “substantial body of documents, testimony and material facts” linking Kabila to the M23 armed group, which has taken control of several towns in the mineral-rich east.

Kabila, 53, has not commented on the accusations but has in the past denied any connection with the insurgents.

Nearly 90 senators on Thursday voted in favour of his treason prosecution, while five opposed it.

“The senate authorises the prosecution and lifting of Joseph Kabila’s immunity,” declared senate Speaker Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde after Thursday’s vote.

The former president, who led the country between 2001 and 2019, did not appear before the senate to defend himself.

After stepping down, he was given the title of “senator for life”, which gives him legal immunity.

In order to pursue the charges against him, DR Congo’s military prosecutor had asked the senate to lift this privilege.

Kabila has been living outside the country, in South Africa, for the past two years. But at the beginning of last month he said he would be returning to help find a solution to the conflict in the east.

A few weeks later, there were reports that the former president had come back and was in Goma, one of the cities captured by the M23.

But these were denied by his political party, the People’s Party for Reconstruction and Democracy (PPRD).

Last month, the authorities banned the PPRD because of its “ambiguous attitude” to the occupation of Congolese territory by the M23.

Ordering the seizure of Kabila’s assets, Justice Minister Mutamba said the former president should return to the country and “face justice… and present his defence”.

Analysts say any trial of Kabila could further destabilise the country, which has been battling the M23 rebellion since 2012.

Kabila’s party termed his prosecution “pure theatre” aimed at distracting Congolese people from the main challenges facing the country, AFP news agency reported.

Kabila, a former military officer, took over leadership of the country in 2001 at the age of just 29, after his father Laurent Kabila, was assassinated.

While Kabila supported Tshisekedi’s rise to power, they later fell out and relations between their parties’ coalition formally ended in December 2020.

Kabila has retained significant power through his political party and his influence within the ruling coalition, potentially undermining Tshisekedi’s presidency.

Kabila left DR Congo in 2023, officially to study in South Africa.

Fighting between the M23 and the Congolese army and allied militia has continued in the east as the rebels attempt to expand their territory.

DR Congo and Rwanda, which denies accusations it backs the M23, may be edging towards a peace deal to end the fighting, which has seen hundreds of thousands of civilians forced from their homes in recent months.

The two countries signed a preliminary agreement in Washington last month and said they had agreed on a pathway to peace.

Last year, three M23 leaders were prosecuted in absentia by a military court and given death sentences for treason.

The government in March offered a reward of $5m (£4m) for help arresting the rebel leaders – Corneille Nangaa, Sultani Makenga and Bertrand Bisimwa.

Scores of New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters thronged the Kumasi residence of Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Wontumi, on Friday morning following reports that the premises had been surrounded by armed National Security operatives and police officers.

The development sparked tension, prompting several senior regional party officials to visit in a show of solidarity.

According to his aide, Oheneba Nana Asiedu, Chairman Wontumi was home with his wife and a domestic staff member when the security personnel arrived.

While the motive behind the operation remains unclear, Asiedu confirmed that Wontumi had been invited by police earlier in connection with ongoing investigations into the operations of Akonta Mining.

Eduwatch calls for legal backing of National Apprenticeship Programme

0

Africa Education Watch (Eduwatch) has called for the legalisation of the National Apprenticeship Programme to ensure its continuity and prevent future governments from abandoning it.

This call was made during a young people’s forum on Thursday, May 22, which seeks to address youth unemployment and close the skills gap.

EDUWATCH believes legal backing will help ensure proper funding, monitoring, and results.

In an interview with the Executive Director of EDUWATCH, Kofi Asare, he underscored the failure of numerous apprenticeship programmes in the past due to a lack of support and strong policy to influence their sustainability.

“One challenge has to do with sustainability. It’s always been a struggle. We’ve seen a tendency to do a legal and policy framework. If they remain in conventions, they will not be sustainable. But if we put them into law and then also develop different budgets to finance them consistently, then we have a structured model as well.

“We must institutionalise apprenticeship programmes. And we must do so at the law, policy, and also at the budget level, so that consistently we have funding, we can monitor progress, and also we have knowledge to guide competition”.

Organised by Eduwatch with support from Oxfam and FOSDA, the forum focused on making apprenticeships more inclusive, environmentally sustainable, and digitally forward.

Kofi Asare, highlighted critical challenges within Ghana’s apprenticeship system.

“Youth unemployment stands at 14.7%, and our current apprenticeship models remain disconnected from the digital and green sectors,” he stated.

The forum highlighted that only 20% of TVET students feel digitally ready, and a mere 25.6% are aware of green skills despite growing labour market demands in sectors like solar energy, sustainable agriculture, and recycling.

In terms of inclusivity, statistics show that 74% of TVET enrolments are male, revealing a persistent gender gap. Participants discussed the need for disability-responsive training, gender-neutral campaigns, and accessibility improvements in training centres.

Young attendees also proposed forward-thinking solutions, such as integrating digital marketing, AI, and robotics into trade training.

The association also urged the youth to contribute ideas for a reimagined apprenticeship framework.

Defence Minister accuses NPP gov’t of neglecting Presidential jet

0

Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah has taken a swipe at the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, accusing it of running down Ghana’s Presidential jet and leaving it in a deplorable state.

Addressing recent concerns about the condition of the aircraft, Dr. Boamah reminded the NPP of what he described as its poor stewardship of the jet while it was under the care of the Ghana Armed Forces.

Governor explains economic gains – MyJoyOnline

0

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama, has asserted that the early signs of macroeconomic stabilisation are largely the results of recent policy actions by the central bank as well as improvement in external and domestic fundamentals.

He said the decline in inflation to 21.2 per cent last month had been shaped by a combination of monetary tightening, relative exchange rate stability, and easing of non-food inflation.

“In March this year, the committee responded decisively to the inflation by raising the policy rate by 100 basis points to 28 per cent.

“Preliminary evidence suggests that this action has contributed to dampening inflation momentum and, importantly, the cedi has appreciated by nearly 19 per cent between April and May, helping to ease imported inflation pressures and restoring public confidence,” Dr Asiama said.

Again, the Governor stressed that the appreciation of the cedi reflected a combination of factors that included prudent monetary policy, improved market sentiments and external sector gains.

MPC meeting

Dr Asiama stated this at the opening of the 124th Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting in Accra yesterday.

Apart from the mandated members of the MPC attending the meeting, four advisors appointed by the central bank, as well as the President of the Ghana Union of Traders’ Associations (GUTA), Joseph Obeng, participated in the meeting.

The three advisors are the Director of Research at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), Dr John Kwakye; the Dean of the University of Cape Coast Business School, Professor John Gatsi; a former International Monetary Fund (IMF) Resident Representative, Dr Francis Kumah; and a director at the central bank, Franklin Belnye.

The MPC meeting is expected to, among others, assess monetary policy outcomes and impact on the markets over the previous quarter and assess the outlook.

The members would ascertain whether the observed rate of change in the exchange rate appreciation is sustainable; how durable the return of market confidence could be, and the implications of those dynamics on inflation forecast over the medium term.

Dr Asiama also said there were encouraging signs of macroeconomic progress that needed to be sustained going forward.

For instance, the country had reached a staff-level agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on the fourth review of the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) programme, he said.

The Governor added that although some prior actions remained outstanding under the ECF key performance indicators, the trajectory was positive.

Additionally, he said, the recent S&P Global Ratings upgrade of Ghana’s sovereign rating from selective default to CCC+ further affirmed the progress that had been made so far in managing the economy.

“External reserves have strengthened, the trade balance has improved, and consumer and business confidence indices are rising steadily. However, significant challenges persist,” he added.

Dr Asiama said although there had been stabilisation in macroeconomic conditions, the path ahead remained complex and fraught with risks, both global and domestic.

He said it was in that regard that the MPC meeting needed to make far-reaching decisions to consolidate the gains made thus far.

The Governor said the current format of the MPC, which included both internal advisors and external MPC members, had significantly sharpened the focus of the bank on key policy issues.

More work

Dr Asiama said in spite of the gains that had been made in terms of the macroeconomic environment, more work needed to be done to improve upon the situation.

He said while the inflation outlook was improving, the situation remained vulnerable to second-round effects, including food supply constraints, especially from northern Ghana and the Sahel, as well as external price shocks, particularly given the volatile global commodity markets.

Again, Dr Asiama said geopolitical tensions and evolving global trade dynamics, including the recent United States-led tariff disputes, had heightened market uncertainty and could affect commodity prices, exchange rates and financial flows in emerging markets such as Ghana’s.

Monetary policy review

Dr Asiama said it was in that regard the central bank had commenced a comprehensive review of its monetary policy implementation framework “to transition from reliance on the unremunerated cash reserve ratio to a more active open market operation regime, including the use of longer-tenor BoG instruments.”

He said the monetary policy review was intended to enhance policy transmission, improve liquidity management, and allow greater room for credit expansion to the private sector.

“As we approach our deliberations, we must carefully assess whether the current monetary policy stance remains adequate to drive disinflation without undermining the fragile growth momentum,” Dr Asiama charged the team.

He stressed that the credibility of the MPC depended on the committee’s ability to respond decisively and proportionately to evolving economic realities.

Context

The Ghana cedi extended its upward momentum against major trading currencies into the third week of May, showing significant appreciation since March this year.

Data from the Bank of Ghana showed that the cedi strengthened from GH¢15.53 to GH¢13.09 per dollar on the buying rate between March 12 and May 12, 2025, while the selling rate improved from GH¢15.55 to GH¢13.10.

Similar gains were recorded against the pound sterling, with the buying price rising from GH¢20.09 to GH¢17.42 and the euro from GH¢16.96 to GH¢14.74 over the same period.

NPP did the heavy lifting to stabilise economy – Amin Adam fires back at Isaac Adongo

0

Ranking Member of Parliament’s Finance Committee and former Finance Minister, Dr Mohammed Amin Adam, has refuted claims by Hon. Isaac Adongo that Ghana’s current economic stability is the result of policies by the new NDC-led government.

Responding to Adongo’s recent statement attributing the appreciation of the cedi and other macroeconomic gains to the Mahama administration’s alleged “reset agenda,” Dr Adam stressed that the foundations for the current stability were laid long before the new government took office in January 2025.

“Economic recovery is a continuum, not a reset,” he stated. “The macroeconomic gains we are seeing now—cedi appreciation, reduced inflation, and improved investor confidence—are fruits of tough policy decisions made between 2022 and 2024.”

Dr Adam cited official data and reports from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to reinforce his claims. According to him, the IMF’s April 2025 review clearly acknowledged Ghana’s recovery efforts under the previous NPP administration. “The IMF confirmed that growth in 2024 exceeded expectations and reserves accumulation far outpaced programme targets. These are not partisan soundbites but objective assessments by an independent body,” he added.

On the issue of debt sustainability, Dr Adam revealed that critical milestones, including the restructuring of over $18 billion in external debt, were achieved under the previous government.

“The October 2024 Eurobond exchange, domestic debt restructuring, and bilateral deals secured debt cancellations and service relief totalling over $12 billion,” he explained. “These achievements brought our debt-to-GDP ratio down to 53.7% by January 2025, but unfortunately, it is already ticking up under this new administration.”

He also dismissed suggestions that the new administration had influenced Ghana’s recent credit rating upgrade. “S&P’s May 2025 rating uplift was based on gains made before the NDC took office—particularly the comprehensive debt restructuring and strengthened reserves. The real work was done before January.”

Dr Adam further emphasised that strong export performance, FX reserves, and improved trade balances were results of consistent policies pursued by the NPP over several years.
“You cannot erase years of hard work with four months of governance,” he argued. “We recorded consistent trade surpluses since 2018, built reserves to $8.98 billion by end-2024, and laid the groundwork for monetary stability.”

He also warned against premature celebrations, noting that inflation remains high at 21% as of April 2025 and the policy rate is still elevated at 28%. “Stability on paper must translate into real economic relief—lower prices, affordable credit, and job creation. We are not there yet,” he cautioned.

Dr Adam concluded by calling for an end to what he described as “political credit wars,” urging the government to focus on delivering its own initiatives rather than claiming ownership of inherited progress.

“Ghanaians need sustainable progress, not applause built on the foundation of others,” he said. “Let the government now prove its own competence by clearing arrears, designing a growth strategy, restoring access to finance, and being transparent with the people.”

Neglected Sunyani Children’s park sparks renewed calls for redevelopment

0

Public pressure is mounting for the rehabilitation of the Sunyani Children’s Park, with calls directed at the Bono Regional Minister to prioritise its redevelopment.

Currently, the only children’s park in Sunyani is in a deplorable condition, overrun by waste and reportedly serving as a haven for individuals experiencing mental health issues.

Lawrence Yeboah Gyan, a broadcast journalist based in Sunyani, has launched a campaign on social media, urging authorities to restore the long-neglected facility.

“In the 90s, people used to come here to read and borrow books, but the place has been left to deteriorate, the place has become the abode for persons with mental challenges. I am urging the Regional Minister and the Municipal Chief Executive to ensure the place is redeveloped,” he told Channel One News.

Once a bustling hub for recreation and learning, the Sunyani Children’s Park has deteriorated into a shadow of its former self. The park’s library, once a centre of curiosity and education, now lies abandoned and unused.

The grounds are littered with refuse, and the space has become an informal shelter for vulnerable individuals. Despite repeated calls over the years, tangible steps toward redevelopment have not been taken.

Pupils from various basic schools in Sunyani have shared their dismay over the park’s condition and voiced a desire to see it restored.

Godfred Frimpong, a pupil of Ridge Experimental, said in an interview, “People are now using the place as a refuse dump. I want the authorities to redevelop the place for us.”

“I did not know this place is Children’s Park because of the state of the place. This place needs to be developed.”

Valice Boahene of Police Experimental School, on his part, said, ” The park needs to be redeveloped so that we can get a place to play.”

Parents have also weighed in, expressing both concern and hope for the park’s future.

Osei Laar noted, ” We can not allow this to continue; something urgently needs to be done to redevelop it to serve its intended purpose.”

Mark Abisa express his thoughts on the issue.

” When we were kids, that is where we used to play, however, the current of the park is uncalled for, the authorities need to do something urgently about the place.”

Vincent Antwi Agyei, the Municipal Chief Executive for Sunyani East, has responded by outlining proposed plans for the park’s redevelopment.

“I am considering collaborating with the Sunyani Traditional Council so that we can get a private developer to develop the place, which the law allows.”

He disclosed, ” It is my wish that by the time I leave office as MCE, the park would have received a facelift.”

Enough of the political dimensions to CJ’s removal proceedings – Appiah Danquah

0

Spokesperson for the Movement for Change, Andrew Appiah Danquah Spokesperson for the Movement for Change, Andrew Appiah Danquah

Private legal practitioner and spokesperson for the Movement for Change, Andrew Appiah Danquah, has criticised what he describes as a growing politicisation of the ongoing processes aimed at the removal of the Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo from office.

Speaking on the JoyNews AM Show on May 23, 2025, Danquah stated that the issue is not being allowed to take due course because of unnecessary political interference.

He said the CJ’s case is sinking because of the numerous political inferences drawn into the matter, stressing that it is undermining the rule of law in the country.

“The CJ’s issue is not taking due course; it is sinking because of the political dimensions,” he said.

Danquah urged political actors to refrain from interfering in judicial matters, noting that a continued politicisation could erode public confidence in the country’s legal institution.

“Politicians should not destroy the rule of law. Enough of the politics. Let the process move on so that other equally important issues the country is grappling with can be resolved,” he stressed.

His comments come amid increased public debate over the conduct and possible investigations involving the Chief Justice’s removal process, with various political groups weighing in on the matter.

On April 22, 2025, Justice Torkornoo was suspended as Chief Justice by President John Mahama, citing a preliminary investigation that found sufficient grounds for an inquiry into her conduct in consultation with the Council of State as provided for by Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution.

NewGas secures $18.2m debt facility from Africa Go Green and Spark+ Funds

0

Africa Go Green Fund (“AGG”), managed by Cygnum Capital (“Cygnum”), and Spark+ Africa Fund (“Spark+”), managed by Enabling Qapital (“EQ”), have disbursed a USD 18.2m Senior Debt Facility to NewGas Cylinder Bottling Ltd (“NewGas”), an affiliate of The Quantum Group Limited (“Quantum”) and a subsidiary of Arch Holdings Limited (“Arch”).

The syndicated loan will be used to finance investments made in the engineering, construction and commissioning of NewGas’ LPG Bottling Plant in Tema and the procurement of cylinders required for LPG distribution.

In Ghana, 67% of the population still relies on harmful cooking fuels like wood and charcoal. Expanding clean cooking gas distribution and driving education are key to accelerating the transition to LPG nationwide. Beyond its health and environmental benefits, LPG is a cheaper energy source, offering 25% savings from a traditional fuel source like charcoal.

NewGas is transforming Ghana’s cooking fuel landscape with its newly developed LPG bottling plant and a robust distribution network. With funding from AGG and Spark+, NewGas is well-positioned to facilitate widespread access to cleaner, more affordable cooking energy.

Hatch and EBS Advisory (now EY) provided technical and ESG-related advice, ensuring that investments made are aligned with the highest international standards of environmental and social responsibility and that the technology being deployed is fit-for-purpose and best in market.

Legal advice was provided to AGG and Spark+ by Hunton Andrews Kurth and Morgan Lewis Bockius, respectively, and both were advised by Keystone Solicitors in Ghana. NewGas was advised by A&O Shearman and Senet Corporate Solicitors in Ghana.

Emmanuel Egyei-Mensah, Chief Executive Officer, NewGas, commented: “We are deeply grateful to Africa Go Green Fund and Spark+ Africa Fund for their partnership and shared vision for a cleaner, healthier, and more energy-resilient Ghana. This investment marks a major milestone in our journey to transform access to safe and affordable LPG across the country.

With this facility, NewGas is not just building infrastructure — we’re building the foundation for a cleaner way of life for millions of Ghanaians. Together, we are igniting a new era of sustainable cooking and energy access.”

Laurene Aigrain, Managing Director, Cygnum / AGG, commented: “Big moves for a cleaner future! We are proud to back NewGas in helping 3 million households in Ghana transition to cleaner cooking fuels. Expanding LPG access is more than just a fuel switch— it’s an investment in public health, environmental sustainability, and economic affordability for families. With better infrastructure and bold action, NewGas is leading the charge for a sustainable energy future in Ghana. Let’s make the switch happen!”

Brian McConnell, Vice President – Africa Region, EQ / Spark+, commented: “We are pleased to support NewGas, a leader in expanding consumer access to LPG in Ghana. Our funding will expand access to a high-quality, cleaner and more efficient cooking option for clients under the Cylinder Recirculation Model (CRM). NewGas is a natural expansion of Arch’s business lines, generating positive environmental, social and financial returns.”

Real Madrid to offer Rodrygo plus cash in bid to sign Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez

Spanish giants Real Madrid are plotting to sign Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez to bolster their midfield following their struggles last season.

According to RM Confidencial, Los Blancos view Fernandez as the ideal player to fit their midfield profile, box-to-box ability, and incredible aggressive pressing skills.

It was indicated that the club plans to offer Brazilian attacker Rodrygo and add some funds to bankroll the move in their attempt to snatch the World Cup winner from the Blues.

Despite the rumours, Real Madrid are yet to submit an official bid to commence negotiations as they look for midfield options after Luka Modric announced his departure from the club at the end of the 2024/2025 season.

Meanwhile, Chelsea are understood to sanction any sale of the Argentine midfielder, whom they bought for over €100 million from Benfica.

Real Madrid have been active in the transfer window, having signed Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold and Bournemouth youngster Dean Huijsen.

Madrid’s trophyless season after 2024/2025 has prompted the club to sign players to augment the squad, especially to fill the void left by German player Toni Kroos in midfield following his retirement from football.

US says Sudan used chemical weapons in war as it issues new sanctions

0

A Sudanese man displays unexploded munitions found at a school in Khartoum A Sudanese man displays unexploded munitions found at a school in Khartoum

The US will impose new sanctions on Sudan after finding it used chemical weapons last year in the ongoing civil war against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), the state department has said.

US exports to the country will be restricted and financial borrowing limits put in place from 6 June, a statement from spokesperson Tammy Bruce read.

Both the Sudanese military and the paramilitary group the RSF have previously been accused of war crimes during the conflict.

The BBC has contacted Sudan for a response to the US’s latest actions. Sudanese officials say they do not yet have a statement.

More than 150,000 people have been killed during the conflict, which began two years ago when Sudan’s army and the RSF began a vicious struggle for power.

In recent months, Sudan’s military has recaptured the capital of Khartoum, but fighting continues elsewhere.

No detail was provided about which chemical weapons the US said it found, but the New York Times reported in January that Sudan used chlorine gas on two occasions, which causes a range of painful and damaging effects and can be fatal.

“The United States calls on the government of Sudan to cease all chemical weapons use and uphold its obligations under the CWC,” the statement read, referring to the Chemical Weapons Convention under which signatories have committed to destroy their stockpiles of the weapons.

Nearly every country in the world – including Sudan – has agreed to the CWC, apart from Egypt, North Korea and South Sudan according to the Arms Control Association, a US-based non-partisan membership organisation. Israel has signed the agreement but not ratified its signature, meaning it has not legally confirmed its involvement in the treaty, the ACA adds.

“The United States remains fully committed to hold to account those responsible for contributing to chemical weapons proliferation,” Bruce added.

This is not the first time the US has imposed sanctions in Sudan. In January, they were issued against leaders of both parties embroiled in the conflict.

Sudan’s military leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan was accused of “destabilising Sudan and undermining the goal of a democratic transition” by the US, which the country’s foreign ministry condemned as “strange and troubling”.

Meanwhile, the head of the RSF Mohammed Hamdan Daglo, also known as Hemedti, was determined to have perpetrated genocide in the country by former secretary of state Antony Blinken. The RSF has denied these charges.

The rival forces have been struggling for power for the past two years, displacing around 12 million people and leaving 25 million needing food aid, more than double the population of London.

New sanctions will have little effect on the country as a result of these prior measures, according to the AFP news agency.

This latest US move comes amid tensions over the alleged involvement of the United Arab Emirates in the conflict. The UAE and Sudan had maintained diplomatic ties until earlier this month when the Sudanese government alleged the UAE provided arms to the RSF, an allegation the UAE denies.

Following US President Donald Trump’s warm reception in the Gulf state last week, Democrats in Congress sought to block the sale of arms from the US to the UAE in part due to its alleged involvement in the conflict.

A Sudanese diplomatic source told news agency Reuters that the US had imposed the new sanctions “to distract from the recent campaign in Congress against the UAE”.

Earlier this month, a top UN court rejected Sudan’s bid to sue the UAE for genocide.

Minority accuses government of withholding statutory funds

0

The Minority in Parliament has accused the government of deliberately withholding statutory payments owed to key national institutions and district assemblies, despite enjoying what it describes as “overwhelming goodwill” from the Ghanaian public.

Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Thursday (May 22), the Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh alleged that the government had failed to disburse a single cedi of the GH₵7.1 billion allocated to the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), as required by the Local Governance Act, Act 936.

“Not a dime has been paid,” he declared, stressing that the delay is in clear breach of the law and is starving the assemblies of the “oxygen they need to function.”

Mr Annoh-Dompreh said the failure to honour these statutory obligations is undermining institutions such as the National Health Insurance Authority, the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund)—which he said is owed GH₵4.1 billion—and Parliament itself, which is yet to receive second quarter payments.

The Minority expressed scepticism over a recent assurance by Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson that payments would commence in June. “If the government does not have the funds, it should communicate to Ghanaians and not attempt to take undue advantage of the goodwill given them,” Mr Annoh-Dompreh stated.

He further suggested that the delay in payments might be a strategy to create the impression that the government’s financial books are in good shape. “As I speak, contractors and other legitimate payments are not being made and it could be one of the reasons why the cedi is performing well against the United States dollar,” he alleged.

The Minority warned that if the finance minister fails to act by Tuesday, when Parliament reconvenes, they will escalate the matter. “It is strange that the government has been collecting taxes over the last six months, yet has failed to build the financial muscles of the assemblies to bring development to the local people,” Mr Annoh-Dompreh said.

He painted a grim picture of inaction at the Common Fund Secretariat, describing the administrator as “just idling around because nothing was happening.” According to him, “The ruling government is doing all the evil things under its first year just because of the goodwill it is enjoying.”

LatexFoamPromo

At the passage of the last budget, Dr Forson had pledged to pay 80 per cent of releases directly to the assemblies, bypassing MPs. However, the Minority claims no such payments have been made so far.

“This is a slap in the face of the people of Ghana,” Mr Annoh-Dompreh concluded.

Infrastructure key to success of ‘Black Star Experience’ – Tourism Analyst

0

By Hafsa Obeng

Accra, May 22, GNA – Mr. Emmanuel Frimpong, a Tourism Consultant and Analyst, says the success of the newly launched ‘Black Star Experience’ would depend on strong infrastructure development.

He said urgent investments were needed in transportation, energy, utilities, and digital systems to fully realise the initiative’s potential.

“Investments in infrastructure development will contribute to sustainable tourism by creating lasting attractions and facilities that benefit both locals and visitors,” he said in an interview with the Ghana News Agency.

“We need to lay the groundwork for this experience to thrive including digital infrastructure to ensure seamless booking and promotion globally,” he added.

Mr. Frimpong described the Black Star Experience as a transformative initiative that could boost Ghana’s position as a global travel destination.

He said the Experience, anchored on seven pillars—cinema, audio, cuisines, aesthetics, style, literature, and heritage—offered a comprehensive platform to showcase Ghana’s cultural diversity in modern contexts.

Mr. Frimpong noted that the initiative would generate economic opportunities for creatives and preserve traditional cultural practices.

He stressed the importance of tourism policies, public-private partnerships, and international collaborations—such as with the African Development Bank—in driving long-term success.

“The engagement with the diaspora will also strengthen cultural ties and encourage diaspora communities to contribute to the preservation and promotion of Ghanaian heritage,” he said.

Mr. Frimpong called for collaboration across the tourism and hospitality sectors to maximise benefits from the Experience.

“Stakeholders must establish regular stakeholder engagement platforms, develop integrated cultural and tourism packages, empower local communities and promote inclusivity, and align with national tourism strategies,” he said.

Mr. Frimpong urged the industry to leverage digital tools for promotion and booking, invest in training, promote Ghana as a Meetings Incentive Conferences and Exhibition (MICE) destination, and foster public-private partnerships.

He said collaboration between government agencies and the private sector would boost tourism infrastructure, improve services, and enhance marketing.

“By embracing these collaborative strategies, stakeholders can collectively enhance the Black Star Experience, positioning Ghana as a vibrant, inclusive, and sustainable tourism destination,” he said.

Mr. Frimpong also highlighted the potential of using influencers and celebrities with African heritage to promote the Beyond the Return initiative.

“A strong online presence is also crucial for reaching international audiences. Ensuring that information about Black Star Experience is easily accessible and engaging to drive interest and participation,” he said.

He called for travel packages tailored to the African diaspora, including heritage tours and community engagement opportunities.

Mr. Frimpong urged the diaspora to invest in Ghana through clear pathways for community involvement and economic participation to deepen connections beyond tourism.

He called on President Mahama to personally support and lead the marketing of the initiative abroad.

Security Operatives storm Chairman Wontumi’s house [Listen]

0

A joint team of National Security operatives and policemen stormed the residence of Ashanti Regional New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

His aide, Oheneba Nana Asiedu, confirmed the development in an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem.

He said the heavily armed operatives, comprising about 23 policemen, arrived at the house around 9:00 a.m. on Friday, May 23, 2025.

Oheneba confirmed that Chairman Wontumi was present with his wife and a domestic helper when they arrived, creating tension.

He noted that the motive behind the operation remains unclear; however, Chairman Wontumi had been invited by the police a few days earlier.

“Some of them were masked and they attempted to break into the house. On Monday, we received a letter at Wontumi Radio in Kumasi for Chairman to appear for questioning as part of investigations into the Akonta mining issue. He assured that he will honour the invitation on Monday, May 26, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. because the letter was served in Kumasi, but he has been asked to come to Accra,” he stated.

Oheneba said that although Wontumi initially gave his assurance, he later received a call from the Ashanti Regional Police Command to arrange a meeting for Wednesday, May 21, 2025 — but no one showed up.

“This operation has therefore come as a surprise because all parties are aware an agreement has been reached, so they are the only ones who can explain the motive for the operation,” he noted.

The aide further stated that after a series of deliberations, the majority of the security operatives left, but six still remained.

“For those of us close to him, we know what is happening and are not shaken, but party members are agitated and some even trooped to the house,” he added.

This follows the dawn arrest of NPP member Alfred Ababio Kumi, popularly known as Adenta Kumi, which has raised concerns among the party’s rank and file.

A life penned with purpose

At 88, Cameron Duodu stands tall not just in stature but as a towering figure in the annals of Ghanaian and international journalism. His name is woven into the fabric of the profession; his voice still resonates, and his pen remains potent.

As this veteran journalist, novelist, broadcaster, and relentless social critic marks his 88th birthday, I am honoured both personally and professionally to reflect on a life lived with uncompromising integrity, intellectual depth, and an enduring sense of mission.

Born on May 24, 1937, in Asiakwa in eastern Ghana, Cameron’s rise was not forged by privilege but by perseverance. Financial limitations meant he missed out on formal secondary and university education. Yet, driven by determination and a voracious appetite for knowledge, he charted his path.

Starting as a pupil teacher, he pursued his education privately, enrolling in a correspondence course through Rapid Results College in London. Remarkably, he passed his O-Level and A-Level examinations in just 15 months, a feat that underscored his intellectual drive and passion for reading.

“I never thought of myself as handicapped because of the lack of formal classroom education. Reading helped me in my work as a journalist. I just had the urge to read, and I read everything.”

That relentless habit of reading became the bedrock of an extraordinary career. Cameron began at New Nation, a general-interest magazine in Ghana, before joining the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), where he rose to editor of radio news.

His return to magazine publishing as editor of the Ghana edition of Drum, the iconic pan-African magazine, marked a turning point. He became the first African to hold that editorial position, giving voice to a continent on the rise.

In the 1960s, Cameron reached national prominence as editor of the Daily Graphic, Ghana’s most widely circulated newspaper. His incisive editorials and fearless commentary earned him admiration and resistance. His influence quickly extended beyond Ghana. As a freelance journalist, he wrote for The Guardian, The Observer, The Economist, Financial Times, The Sunday Times, and De Volkskrant (Amsterdam).

His work featured in South and Index on Censorship magazines, and he became a regular voice on BBC World and the BBC World Service, where he helped global audiences make sense of African politics, economics, and culture.

Today, he continues to write for New African (London), City Press (Johannesburg), and the Ghanaian Times (Accra), proving that neither age nor time has dulled his pen or dimmed his passion.

The Writer and the Word

Beyond journalism, Cameron is a literary force. His 1967 novel The Gab Boys, published by André Deutsch and later translated into German as Flucht nach Akkra, is a coming-of-age story that probes post-colonial identity, ambition, and moral compromise. Now a staple of African literature, it anticipated the literary activism that would later define a generation of writers. He has also written poetry and plays, enriching the African literary landscape.

Asked what his best-ever articles were, Cameron smiled shyly and asked: “How much space are they giving you? Because I nearly lost my life sometimes, chasing stories in foreign countries. I was… look, you need a follow-up piece, I am afraid!”

A Family Tapestry, A Personal Connection
My connection to Uncle Cameron runs deep. Two of his children, Kofi and Yvonne, were my classmates in the 1980-year group. I attended St. Augustine’s College (APSU), Kofi went to Mfantsipim School, and Yvonne to Wesley Girls’ High School All three of us were schooled in Cape Coast, the cradle of Ghanaian academic excellence.

Our familial bonds were further strengthened in Burma Camp. My best friend, Robert Wilson, is the son of Major Letitia Reindorf (Rtd.), and the Duodu children are his cousins. Through that link, our paths crossed early and have remained intertwined. Over the years, I have come to know Cameron’s other children, Yaw, Akwasi, Korieh, Maureen and admire the close-knit, accomplished family he and his wife raised.

The Beer and the Thinkers
I have had the pleasure of many long, illuminating conversations with Cameron. He fondly recalls spirited intellectual exchanges with the late Prof. Kofi Awoonor, poet, diplomat, and former UN ambassador and my late father, Col. Peter Mama Agbeko (Rtd.), a lawyer and army officer who served as the first Director of Legal Services of the Ghana Armed Forces. Their friendship, often accompanied by “some very cold and refreshing beer,” was a meeting of great minds who debated politics, literature, and the human condition with relentless passion.

Still Speaking Truth to Power
Even as an octogenarian, Cameron remains deeply engaged in national discourse. One issue that grips him is galamsey, the scourge of illegal mining that threatens Ghana’s environment and future. He has written compellingly about its dangers, calling it “an existential threat.” On more than one occasion, he has urged me personally to “keep writing on galamsey,” determined to keep the issue in the public consciousness until real solutions emerge.

Faith and the World
Though not born Catholic, Cameron holds a deep admiration for the late Pope Francis, whom he sees as a beacon of humility, moral clarity, and courage, qualities he holds dear. It was fitting that at this year’s Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) World Press Freedom Day and Honours Awards Night, Cameron was formally recognised for his outstanding contributions to journalism. The GJA tribute honoured his pioneering work, moral compass, and decades-long influence on generations of journalists.

Indeed, when my APSU/GIJ classmate and friend Kobby Asmah served as Editor of the Daily Graphic, Uncle Cameron and other distinguished veterans provided invaluable behind-the-scenes guidance and support. Their quiet mentorship helped uphold the values of professionalism and truth that remain essential to journalism today.

A Living Legacy
Cameron Duodu’s legacy is not confined to newspaper bylines or literary pages. It lives on in the people he has inspired, the ideas he has shaped, and the standards he has set. He reminds us that journalism is not just a job, it is a calling. His values, truth, justice, courage, and intellectual curiosity continue to guide many, myself included.

As he turns 88, we celebrate more than a birthday; we celebrate a purposeful life that has enriched Ghana, Africa, and the world. Cameron Duodu is still writing, still challenging, still thinking, and still calling us all to do better.

Happy birthday, Uncle Cameron. You are, and will always be, a national treasure.

Tema residents react to President Mahama’s free sanitary pad initiative.

0

Tema, May 22, GNA — Residents of Tema have expressed mixed reactions to the free sanitary pad initiative for basic and secondary school girls, spearheaded by President John Dramani Mahama.

The distribution of the pad initiative aims at addressing period poverty and ensuring girls’ continued access to education.

The residents expressed the belief that providing free sanitary pads would alleviate financial burdens on families, improve hygiene and better health outcomes, and help girls overcome some challenges they face during their periods, such as school absenteeism, especially in the rural areas.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr Nana Junior Mensah, an environmental officer, said that the sanitary pads should be easily accessible through schools, community centres, or healthcare facilities and ensure that distribution would be efficient to address any potential logistical problems.

Mr Mensah noted that “the programme must ensure that the sanitary pads meet hygiene standards and are comfortable for girls. The quality of the pad is very important,” he said.

He suggested that the sanitary pad should be produced in Ghana to prevent excessive use of money on imported sanitary pads.

Miss Adwoa Amissah, a food vendor, mentioned that the initiative should include educational components like menstrual hygiene

management workshops to help reduce stigma, provide essential knowledge, and empower girls.

“The programme should not be only about distribution of sanitary pads; the girl child must be educated on menstrual hygiene,” she said.

Miss Amissah emphasised that boys must also be educated about menstruation to reduce stigma, promote empathy and encourage them to support their female peers.

Madam Elegance Acheampong, a hairstylist, suggested that the programme’s effectiveness should be monitored through data collection, surveys, and feedback from girls and the community to help improve its implementation.

“We are hopeful that the initiative will make a significant difference in the lives of schoolgirls,” she said.

Government is not happy penalising businesses – GRA

0

By Elizabeth Larkwor Baah

Tema, May 22, GNA - Assistant Commissioner Mr Joseph Asare, the Accra East Area Director of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), has said the government does not take pride in penalising businesses for non-compliance with tax regulations.

Assistant Commissioner Asare said the government’s primary goal was to support businesses to comply voluntarily with tax obligations, not to burden them with penalties, saying that the application of sanctions was required by law and not a deliberate attempt to frustrate businesses.

He made this known during an engagement with the business community on Sustainability Growth Levy Compliance at Tema Community-Nine, Presbyterian Church of Ghana.

He said the penalties served as a deterrent to prevent late payments and ensured that all eligible businesses contributed their fair share to the national purse and therefore urged businesses to promptly honour their tax obligations to avoid unnecessary charges.

Assistant Commissioner Asare said the GRA had introduced an online portal system to make tax filing and payments more accessible and efficient, saying that this system eliminates the need for physical visits to tax offices and simplifies the entire tax process, although they could visit the offices when they faced challenges.

He encouraged businesses to be proactive and not wait until the deadline before making payments, adding that even though the law required quarterly payment, they could also consider paying monthly to better manage their finances and avoid last-minute delays.

“The fact that it is quarterly payments does not mean waiting until the end of the quarter; you can further break it into months,” he stated.

Assistant Commissioner Asare noted that businesses often incur additional costs simply by delaying their payments and cautioned them against the tendency to wait until the end of the financial year to settle tax obligations, as this often leads to accumulated interest and penalty fees.

He gave an assurance that the GRA was fully committed to helping taxpayers navigate the new system, while encouraging businesses to seek assistance where necessary and keep their tax records up to date.

He reiterated that the government’s focus was on building a strong and self-reliant economy through efficient tax mobilisation, not by levying punitive fines on struggling businesses.

Alleged Secret Meeting: ‘There are more videos’

File photo of Alfred Ababio Kumi, a former NPP parliamentary candidate hopeful File photo of Alfred Ababio Kumi, a former NPP parliamentary candidate hopeful

The former New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate hopeful, Alfred Ababio Kumi, who petitioned President John Dramani Mahama to dissolve the committee probing petitions for the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo over an alleged secret meeting, has reportedly been arrested.

Hours before his arrest, which reportedly happened on Friday, May 23, 2025, Alfred Kumi reacted to a video shared by Godwin Edudzi Tamaklo, the acting Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority, purportedly showing the secret meeting between the justices on the committee and a lawyer of one of the people who petitioned for Chief Justice Torkornoo’s removal, he based his petition on.

In a post shared on X, on May 22, 2025, Alfred Kumi indicated that he was under threat following the release. He hinted that he had more videos of the so-called secret meeting.

He went on to caution security officials against any attempt to arrest him because he petitioned the president on the matter and not the officials.

“I said it that if I have to run for my life, someone will release the video! There are more videos, please any state agency that does not allow the president @JDMahama to respond to the petition, but rather want to pick me up, will cause more harm to our state than picking me.

“I petitioned the president, not BNI or national security. Leave me the hell alone!!” he wrote on X.

Kumi alleged that on May 15, 2025, after the committee’s inaugural sitting, Justices Pwamang and Adibu-Asiedu, along with Supreme Court Justice Yonni Kulendi, were seen dining with Thaddeus Sory, counsel for petitioner Daniel Ofori, at Santoku Restaurant in Accra’s Airport Residential Area.

He claimed they were overheard discussing matters related to the petition.

“The meeting between Justices Pwamang, Kulendi, and Asiedu with Thaddeus Sory clearly has tainted the integrity of the process and reduces public confidence in the process,” a report by asaaseradio.com quoted Kumi’s petition.

However, the CCTV footage of the restaurant shared online, which has no sound, appears to completely contradict the claims made by the petitioner, Alfred Kumi.

Thaddeus Sory, a legal representative for one of the petitioners seeking the removal of suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, was seated at the restaurant with Kotei Dzani, a former Council of State member, talking and eating together at a table.

Sory appeared unaware of the presence of one of the judges implicated in the petition until his attention was drawn to it.

After a brief conversation, they each continued with their separate business. It appears there was no such meeting to discuss the petition.

Latest Hair Braids for African Women: Embracing Style and Heritage

0

Hair braiding has always been an essential part of African culture, offering a rich tapestry of styles, traditions, and identity. Today, hair braids continue to be a powerful symbol of heritage while also evolving to suit modern aesthetics. African women are embracing new braiding trends that fuse history with contemporary flair, allowing them to express their personalities, cultural pride, and fashion sense.

One of the most popular braiding styles is Box Braids. These versatile braids remain timeless, offering a protective style that can be customized in various lengths and thicknesses. In 2025, box braids have become even more creative with bold color choices and intricate parting patterns, such as geometric or zigzag designs. The addition of beads and charms further enhances the overall look, giving it an edgy, modern twist while still honoring its cultural roots.

Ghana weaving has also made a resurgence, thanks to its neat, flat, and intricate appearance. Traditionally associated with elaborate designs, today’s Ghana weaving includes asymmetrical styles and the blending of different braid sizes, offering a fresh yet respectful take on the classic. This style is especially popular for formal events or daily wear, as it balances sophistication with practicality.

Another exciting development is the return of Tribal Braids, inspired by various ethnic groups across the African continent. These braids are often adorned with accessories such as beads, feathers, and metallic threads, which reflect the diverse heritage of Africa. Tribal braids are gaining momentum because of their bold, artistic nature, allowing women to celebrate their roots while showcasing personal creativity.

Finally, Senegalese Twists are another staple, offering a sleek, elegant, and low-maintenance option. These twists, made from synthetic hair, are ideal for women who seek a refined and stylish look without sacrificing comfort. They are also incredibly versatile, with many choosing to wear them long, short, or in various colors to suit different occasions.

In the ever-evolving world of hair fashion, African braids are more than just a trend—they are a celebration of identity, culture, and creativity. As African women continue to embrace new braiding techniques, they honor their heritage while pushing the boundaries of style, ensuring that braids remain a timeless and powerful expression of individuality.

Bomfeh cautions public against over-reliance on audio and video recordings in public discourse

0

Chief Executive Officer of the Centre for Citizenship, Constitutional and Electoral Systems (CenCES), James Kwabena Bomfeh, has urged the public to be cautious about the growing emphasis placed on audio and video recordings in national discussions.

His comments follow the emergence of CCTV footage purportedly capturing a brief meeting between lawyer Thaddeus Sory and some Supreme Court judges at the Santoku Restaurant in Accra’s Airport Residential Area.

The footage, reportedly only a few seconds long, has stirred public speculation and media debate.

Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show, Mr Bomfeh stressed the importance of a measured response to such materials. “We need to be very careful, as a country, about the emphasis we place on audio and video recordings in this day and age,” he said.

He referenced a similar situation that occurred months ago involving an audio recording which made serious allegations against the Attorney-General. “At that time, some of us chose to let the legal process take its course rather than rushing to judgment,” he recalled.

According to him, if any conduct or statement contravenes the law, it must be addressed through appropriate legal means. “Let’s use the process of the law to address it, rather than rushing to the public and dealing with it that way,” he added. “I stand by that decision.”

Mr Bomfeh also criticised the inconsistency of individuals who quickly condemned others based on previous recordings, but appear to have changed their tune in the current matter. “Those who have shifted their position should be asked what has changed. This is something we must reflect on and be mindful of,” he concluded.

He called on the public to adopt a cautious and responsible approach in the face of the ongoing controversy, urging all to allow the legal system to take its course before drawing conclusions.

Adenta Kumi’s wife allegedly suffers miscarriage over his arrest [Audio]

0

The wife of New Patriotic Party (NPP) member Alfred Ababio Kumi has reportedly suffered a miscarriage following his arrest in the early hours of Friday, May 23, 2025.

Kumi’s mother, Nana Ama Owusu, disclosed the incident during an interview on , adding that he has since been hospitalised.

According to Nana Ama, her daughter-in-law was four months pregnant, and the family is devastated by the loss.

She recounted that at around 5:30 a.m., about eight armed men stormed her son’s house. The raid followed Kumi’s public comments on the controversy surrounding the potential removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

“Two men said they were from the CID and I told them they could speak with me, but one just pushed me aside. Only one wore a police uniform; the rest were in plain clothes. They forced their way into my room,” she recalled.

She narrated that the armed men struck the gate with the butts of their rifles in an attempt to enter the house.

“Kumi’s wife rushed to see what was happening, but upon seeing the security operatives, she panicked and struggled to open the gate. One of them ordered a shot to be fired. While running away, she fell and began bleeding profusely,” she said.

The distressed mother added that the family’s pleas to accompany the security officers were ignored. They were later informed that Kumi had been taken into custody at the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).

The arrest follows Kumi’s recent petition to President John Mahama, in which he called for the dissolution of the committee investigating the possible removal of the Chief Justice.

In his petition, Kumi alleged misconduct involving members of the committee.

He claimed that on May 15, 2025, following the committee’s inaugural sitting, Justices Gabriel Scott Pwamang and Samuel Kwame Adibu-Asiedu—both members of the committee—and Supreme Court Justice Yonny Kulendi were seen dining at Santoku Restaurant with Thaddeus Sory, counsel for petitioner Daniel Ofori.

Kumi alleged the group was overheard discussing matters related to the petition. It is believed that the arrest is linked to this allegation.

GHS confirms eight new Mpox cases, urges public vigilance

0

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed eight new cases of Mpox (formerly monkeypox), raising the total number of infections in 2025 to nine and heightening concern over the spread of the viral disease.

Dr. Dennis Odai Laryea, Deputy Director of Surveillance at the GHS and Consultant Public Health Physician, shared the update in an interview on Channel One TV on Friday, May 23.

“Currently, we have eight confirmed cases. Cumulatively for this year, that makes nine. One case was recorded earlier in the year and was quickly contained. The latest outbreak has produced eight confirmed cases—four each in the Greater Accra and Western Regions,” he revealed.

As part of its surveillance efforts, health authorities have investigated over 100 suspected cases of Mpox across the country. While all 16 regions have reported suspected cases, confirmed infections have so far been limited to the Greater Accra and Western Regions.

Dr. Laryea assured the public that the GHS’s surveillance system is designed to quickly identify and respond to suspected infections, thereby minimizing the risk of widespread transmission.

Vivo Energy pledges commitment to safety across its operations

0

Accra, May 22, GNA-Mr. Christian Li, Managing Director of Vivo Energy Ghana, has pledged the company’s commitment to upholding the highest standard of safety in its operations.

Having achieved 5,249 (about 14 years) Goal Zero days without any significant safety or environmental incident, he said it was a reflection of the organisation’s strong safety culture.

Mr Christian Li made this remark at the launch of this year’s Vivo Energy Ghana’s Safety Day and Awards ceremony at its Tema depot.

The event, which brought together employees, partners, and stakeholders of the company marked the beginning of a year-long drive to strengthen workplace safety across all levels of operations.

Highlighting this year’s theme, ‘Growth Mindset – Competent and Committed’, Mr. Li stated that building a strong safety culture required more than compliance.

It said it required commitment, interest, and continuous learning, adding that the company’s focus for 2025 was to empower every individual to take ownership of safety, reinforcing competence at all levels, and creating a work environment, where proactive behaviour and generative culture becomes second nature.

He stated: “At Vivo Energy, we have made significant investments in safety technologies including In-Vehicle Monitoring Systems (IVMS), in-cab cameras, anti-rollover systems, Vehicle Health Assessments (VHA), and engineering controls, all aimed at making road transport and workplace environments safer.”

However, people make the real difference. Safety requires people who are competent and committed to protect themselves and those around them”.

Representing Vivo Energy Group at the launch, Rob Foyle, Group Head of Communications, commended the Ghana team’s commitment to safety, and highlighted the importance of personal accountability and shared responsibility.

“As we launch this year’s safety campaign and present awards to employees and contractors who have demonstrated an outstanding safety culture, let us remember that while systems and procedures can guide us, it is our mindset that makes us safe. Let us speak up, look out for one another, and build a safety culture, where every action counts,” he said.

He stressed that safety at Vivo Energy was a foundational value, embedded across its operations on the continent.

“At Vivo Energy, safety isn’t just a box to tick; it is our absolute priority, and a core value. Achieving and maintaining world-class health, safety, security, environment, and quality standards differentiates us in every market- from Tema to Takoradi, and from Tunisia to Tanzania,” he added.

The emphasis on mindset and safe behaviour was brought to life through a powerful skit performed by staff during the launch, vividly demonstrating how individual choices can either prevent or lead to workplace incidents.

The performance served as a visual and impactful reminder of the critical role behaviour plays in maintaining a safe work environment.

The event also recognised individuals and teams who have demonstrated exceptional dedication to safety. Awards were presented to outstanding employees, contractors, and transporters, with the Best Haulier going out to J. K Hogle Transport & Co. Ltd, Best Bulk Vehicle Operator, Ernest Ofoe, Most Potential Incidents Reporter, Michael Oppong and the Best Quality Potential Incidents Reporter, Raphael Oduro.

A viral video of the incident showed armed men at the entrance of the Ashanti Region NPP chairman’s home in Kumasi.

More investment coming for basic schools

0

Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced a policy direction by the government, signalling a shift in focus towards increased investment in basic education over senior high schools.

He observed that, over the years, government spending has been heavily tilted in favour of senior high schools, while basic education, particularly in infrastructure, has suffered neglect.

Mr. Iddrisu made this announcement at the 21st Annual Education World Forum (EWF) in London on Thursday, May 22, held under the theme “Building Stronger, Bolder, and Better Education Together.”

In his address, he emphasised that strengthening basic education is now a critical priority for the government.

“Access to quality education with improved learning outcomes, that is the vision of the new government, and to invest more in basic education. If we review an assessment of our education funding regime in the last decade, you will find proportional expenditure weighted in favour of free senior high school against basic education and tertiary education. But now there is a shift, and that shift is to prioritise basic education.”

This forum serves as a crucial platform for enhancing international collaboration and strengthening partnerships in education.

Haruna Iddrisu also seized the opportunity to engage with numerous donor partners who are making significant contributions to the Ministry of Education, reinforcing the government’s commitment to advancing educational initiatives.

Former Greater Accra Regional Minister Henry Quartey has been exonerated

Popular Ghanaian journalist Afia Pokuaa, also known as Vim Lady, has come out to defend former Greater Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey, over his past efforts to prevent flooding in Accra.

In a post on her Facebook page on Thursday, 22nd May, 2025, Afia Pokuaa said that many Ghanaians misunderstood Quartey’s work when he was in office, but recent events have proven that he was right all along.

BoG Governor warns of risks despite signs of macroeconomic stability

0

Dr Johnson Asiama, Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), says Ghana’s macroeconomic conditions are showing early signs of stabilisation, but significant risks remain.

He said that although the inflation outlook was improving, it remained vulnerable to several factors.

“These include potential second-round effects, constraints on food supply, especially from northern Ghana and the Sahel, and external price shocks, particularly given the volatility in global commodity markets,” he said.

Dr Asiama was addressing the 124th Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) Meetings in Accra.

Inflation declined to 21.2 per cent in April 2025 but remained above the central bank’s medium-term target of 8 ± 2 per cent and the upper tolerance band of 19 per cent.

He cited geopolitical tensions and evolving global trade dynamics, including recent US-led tariff disputes, as developments that have increased market uncertainty.

These global trends could affect commodity prices, exchange rates, and financial flows in emerging markets like Ghana.

Dr Asiama emphasised the importance of MPC deliberations, stating the Committee would assess whether the current policy stance was sufficient to drive disinflation without hindering fragile economic growth.

Key focus areas, he noted, include the sustainability of the recent exchange rate appreciation, the durability of returning market confidence, and their implications for the medium-term inflation outlook.

Despite challenges, Ghana has secured a Staff-Level Agreement with the IMF on the Fourth Review of the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) Programme.

Standards and Poors, a rating agency, had upgraded Ghana’s sovereign rating from selective default to CCC+.

External reserves have also improved, the trade balance has strengthened, and consumer and business confidence indices continue to rise.

Nana Ama Owusu, the mother of Alfred Ababio Kumi, a former NPP parliamentary aspirant for Adenta, has confirmed that her son has been arrested by individuals believed to be officials from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).

Alfred Kumi, who is currently involved in a petition to President John Dramani Mahama, seeking the dissolution of the committee investigating the removal of the Chief Justice over an alleged secret meeting, shared a post on his social media that he was receiving threats from national security operatives.

Confirming the incident in an interview with Asaase Radio on Friday, May 23, 2025, Nana Ama Owusu recounted that the officials arrived at their residence to carry out the arrest of her son.

She stated that the officials forcibly broke down his door after he informed them that he was preparing to wash up.

“NIB officials came to our house. He was bathing when they broke down his door which is now destroyed. The residence is two apartments and I live on the same compound with him,” she said.

Nana Ama Owusu, who appeared visibly shaken by the experience, further disclosed that the officials, numbering eight, arrived armed and in possession of documents she believed to be arrest warrants authorising them to detain her son.

“They [officials] were 8 in number who came to the house wielding guns. They [officials] came along with a document which I didn’t get the opportunity to see claiming it’s a warrant and identifying themselves as NIB. When they came, they said they wanted to have a conversation with my son only for them to arrest him and take him away. They arrived at the house around 5:30am and picked him up around 6 am,” she continued.

Also known as Adenta Kumi, his mother added that she has not heard from her son since he was taken away by the officials in the early hours of Friday.

“I haven’t heard from him since they took him away so I’m heading there right away. My son told the officials to give him some time to dress up since he was bathing but they did not allow him, breaking down his door with their gun.”

In a Facebook post on Friday morning, the Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, Vincent Ekow Assafuah revealed that Kumi was picked up about three hours earlier from his residence by eight armed men believed to be operatives of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).

Alfred Kumi, in his petition, cited allegations of misconduct which he believes could undermine the integrity of the inquiry being conducted by the Pwamang Committee into the removal of the Chief Justice.

Government Statistician Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu underscored the significance of interventions such as the Gold Board initiative and Agriculture for Transformation Agenda, stressing their importance in enhancing economic stability and reinforcing the downward trend in inflation.

This call comes on the back of a 5.9 percentage point drop in year-on-year producer price inflation from 24.4percent in March 2025 to 18.5 percent in April 2025 – marking the third consecutive month of decline.

According to the Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu, this slowdown provides a unique policy window for government to act decisively in strengthening the industrial base and stimulating economic growth.

“Now is the time to fast-track targetted interventions that will reinforce the downward trend in inflation and build a more resilient economy,” the Government Statistician advised following release of the latest Producer Price Index (PPI) data.

Beyond these flagship policies, GSS has also encouraged government to make better use of sector-specific inflation data in shaping effective industrial, trade and inflation control policies.

The PPI data for April 2025 provides a breakdown of price movements across key economic sectors including mining, manufacturing, construction and services. For instance, easing inflationary pressures in mining and manufacturing accounted for 94.5% of the inflation decline in April – signalling areas where government policy can be further calibrated to maintain stability.

“Detailed sub-sector data should be used to guide policy decisions. Understanding where inflation is cooling or persisting allows for more targetted and impactful responses,” he emphasised.

In addition, he called for intensified public education around producer price inflation and its economic implications, saying transparency and proactive communication with businesses, consumers and policymakers are crucial to building confidence in the economy’s direction.

Government also cautioned that “while a falling rate of price increases helps, it can also mean people are not buying as much”, hence government must be alert and ready to intervene if businesses or employment levels come under pressure.

Businesses

Businesses were also urged to take advantage of easing inflation by re-evaluating their cost structures and pricing models. With the rate of increase in prices of domestically produced inputs slowing, companies now have a chance to offer more competitive prices and attract new customers.

The GSS further encouraged the private sector to resume paused investment plans and cautiously explore expansion noting that stable factory gate prices reduce input cost unpredictability and make it easier to plan medium- to long-term projects.

In addition, the Service advised businesses to shift toward local sourcing, pointing out that locally sourced inputs have become relatively cheaper and offer a buffer against exchange rate fluctuations and import-related shocks. This strategy, GSS explained, not only improves cost efficiency but also supports domestic industries.

GSS further urged business owners to initiate discussions with financial institutions for improved loan terms, citing the declining inflation trend as a favourable context for negotiating better interest rates.

Households

At the household level, GSS recommended a more cautious and informed financial approach – encouraging consumers to save more and avoid panic-buying, given the increasing price stability.

Consumers were also encouraged to “speak up about unfair prices if shops keep raising prices even when the rate of increase in producer prices is going down”, as GSS believes transparency and accountability across the value chain is critical.

“Avoid High-Interest Loans since prices are stabilising; invest in small side jobs or farming. This is a good time to start small income activities like farming, petty trading or home-based services,” it added.

Fiscal

These calls come at a time when inflation rate continues on a downward trajectory, with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) report for April 2025 revealing year-on-year (y-on-y) inflation of 21.2 percent, a decline of 1.2 percentage points from the 22.4 percent recorded in March 2025 – making it the fifth consecutive month of easing.

And also the cedi staged a remissive bout against the dollar and other major trading currencies – appreciating about 16 percent against the dollar, according to Bloomberg.

The cedi was named ‘best performing currency in the world’ for the month of May by Bloomberg.

On the interbank market at close of business on Wednesday, May 20, 2025, the cedi was trading at GH¢11.85 to US$1, GH¢15.85 to £1 and GH¢13.32 to €1.
