President Mahama appoints Said Sinare as Ghana’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

In a bold and strategic diplomatic move, President John Dramani Mahama has nominated Alhaji Said Sinare, former National Vice Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), as Ghana’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The appointment, which was officially communicated in a letter dated July 21, 2025, and signed by the Secretary to the President, Dr Callistus Mahama, forms part of a broader reshuffle in Ghana’s diplomatic front aimed at deepening bilateral relations and strengthening the country’s international presence.

Alhaji Sinare, a seasoned diplomat and respected statesman, previously served Ghana as Ambassador to Egypt and Saudi Arabia during the earlier administration of President Mahama.

His reappointment to Saudi Arabia is seen by political analysts and observers as a clear endorsement of his competence, vast diplomatic experience, and commitment to national service.

The letter, addressed to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, directs the ministry to take the necessary steps to facilitate the appointment processes for Alhaji Sinare and seven other distinguished individuals named as ambassadors and high commissioners to various countries, including Namibia, South Korea, Italy, Hungary, Burkina Faso, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Kenya.

Alhaji Sinare’s return to Riyadh as Ghana’s top envoy comes at a crucial time when Ghana seeks to expand its diplomatic and economic engagements with Saudi Arabia and the broader Gulf region.

His vast experience in Arab geopolitics and international diplomacy positions him as the right man to drive Ghana’s interests in the oil-rich Kingdom.

The presidency also announced a replacement in the Vatican diplomatic mission, with Benedict Batabe Assorow designated to replace Satireh Dorcas Ocran as Ambassador to the Vatican City State.

As the Ministry of Foreign Affairs moves to finalise the formalities, supporters of the NDC and members of the diplomatic community have welcomed the appointments, especially that of Alhaji Sinare, which they say reflects the president’s confidence in tested hands who can deliver results on the global stage.

Alhaji Said Sinare’s wealth of experience, Pan-African credentials, and loyalty to Ghana’s democratic and development agenda are expected to bring renewed vigor to Ghana-Saudi relations under the Mahama administration.

A staunch supporter of President John Dramani Mahama, Appiah Stadium, sparked controversy on July 24, 2025, during the 13th Wreath Laying Ceremony to honour the memory of former President John Evans Fiifi Atta Mills.

Appiah Stadium, born Frank Kwaku Appiah, staged one of his famous political spectacles when he interacted with President Mahama on the dais.

A viral video shows him sitting on the dais and having a hearty chat with the president, during which he pulled out his phone, seemingly to ask for the president’s contact information.

The president’s gesture of rubbing Appiah Stadium’s shiny bare head has been interpreted as a sign of their strong bond and friendship.

Since switching from the NPP to the NDC, Appiah Stadium’s relevance has centred around creating attention-grabbing scenes with high-profile personalities, including President Mahama.

NGO launches sanitary pad banks in five schools

0

The Community Aid for Rural Development (CARD-Ghana) has launched sanitary pad banks in five Junior High Schools (JHS) in the Wa municipality.

The banks aim to promote menstrual hygiene, reduce absenteeism, and empower young girls.

The initiative by CARD-Ghana with funding support from Plan International Ghana, sought to ensure that no girl missed school due to the lack of access to sanitary pads.

The pad banks were installed at the Chegli Islamic, Sagu R/C, Kperisi M/A, Nyagli M/A, and Nakori/Chansa M/A JHSs as part of the implementation of the She Leads project.

The intervention was a build-up on the successful installation of a sanitary pad bank at the Wa Methodist school for the Blind to ensure more girls could safely manage their menstruation with dignity and stay in school.

In a message on the intervention, Mr Constant Tchona, the Country Director of Plan International Ghana, indicated that his organisation was proud to support the initiative, ensuring no girl missed school because of her menstrual period.

“This adds up to many interventions we continue to implement and fund across the country to ensure that girls are empowered to learn, lead, decide and thrive,” he stated.

Speaking at the launch at the Chegli, Ms. Ernestina Biney, the Executive Director of CARD-Ghana, described the intervention as a proactive response to the challenges girls faced during menstruation, which often hindered their education.

She said: “When girls have access to sanitary products, they stay in school, gain confidence, and become leaders.

“This Pad Bank initiative is a step towards breaking barriers in girls’ education.”

Ms Biney urged the government to institutionalise the pad bank model within the national sanitary pad policy to ensure the policy’s sustainability and wider impact.

On her part, Madam Nafisah Yahaya, the Upper West Regional Director of the Department Community Development, expressed concern over the vulnerability of girls due to lack of access to menstrual products.

She said: “Parents, especially fathers, must see sanitary pads as a basic necessity, not just a woman’s responsibility.”

Pognaa Amamata Mumuni, the Wa Municipal Girl-Child Coordinator, appealed to fathers to play active roles in supporting their daughters’ menstrual hygiene needs.

Mr Mark Abu Momori, the Headmaster of Chegli Islamic JHS, said the pad bank would enhance girl-child education, indicating that some girls could not track their menstrual cycle and ended up soiling themselves in class, which affected their participation in teaching and learning.

He assured the benefactors that the school would take initiative to support the sustainability of the pad bank by encouraging community members and other stakeholders to donate sanitary pads to the pad bank.

Some parents at the event expressed appreciation to the benefactors, noting that the intervention would not only support menstrual hygiene management, but also safeguarded the girls’ education.

Chelsea ‘change tune’ on Alexander Isak transfer after two developments | Football | Sport

0

Chelsea have been no stranger to a big-money transfer move since Todd Boehly and Co. took charge of the London side. It’s a trend that has continued this summer, with Joao Pedro, Jamie Gittens and Liam Delap having penned deals with the capital club.

But eyebrows were raised when news that Alexander Isak wanted out of Newcastle broke earlier this week, with the Swede having established himself as one of Europe’s most coveted strikers. Chelsea have previously been linked with a move for Isak, who netted 27 goals and registered six assists across all competitions for Newcastle last season.

But, there appears to have been a change of tact following the news that Isak wants to leave, with The Athletic reporting Chelsea are no longer interested in a move. It’s claimed that the recently crowned world champions are content with their forward line and don’t view Isak as a necessary signing.

Chelsea took advantage of Delap’s £30million relegation clause earlier in the summer, fending off interest from the likes of Manchester United and Newcastle for his signature. Whereas Pedro made an immediate impact at the Club World Cup following his £60m move from Brighton.

For the latest breaking stories and headlines, sign up to our Daily Express transfer newsletter.

That doesn’t mean to say Chelsea have shut up shop for the summer transfer window though, with the Blues rumoured to be in the market for several players between now and the September 1 deadline. Chelsea are reportedly in talks for promising defender Jorrel Hato, who is expected to leave Ajax this summer.

Hato, who doesn’t turn 20 until March next year, was left out of Ajax’s squad for their pre-season friendly against Celtic on Tuesday night. It’s claimed that Chelsea and Ajax boast a strong working relationship and personal terms between the player and club won’t be an issue.

And then there’s a move for Xavi Simons, who Chelsea have identified as a prospective midfield addition. Simons is expected to leave RB Leipzig after the Bundesliga club failed to finish inside the European positions for the first time since 2016.

Chelsea are rumoured to be closing in on an agreement with Simons surrounding personal terms, with their next step to be negotiating a fee with Leipzig. The German side are believed to be interested in a move for Carney Chukwuemeka, but only on a short-term loan basis. Chelsea would instead prefer to cash in on the player they spent £20m on three years ago.

Any police officer sent to Akwatia by-election without a weapon is at risk – Oko Boye warns

Former Minister of Health, Dr Bernard Oko Boye, has warned officers of the Ghana Police Service who will be deployed to the Eastern Region for the upcoming Akwatia by-election following the death of the sitting Member of Parliament Ernest Yaw Kumi.

According to the former Member of Parliament for the Ledzokuku Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, if the police service fails to provide officers with weapons for their protection during the election, their lives will be at risk.

Speaking in an interview on Wontumi TV, which has been shared widely on social media, Oko Boye, who is also a key member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), said the party was putting security measures in place ahead of the by-election, citing the violence that marred the Ablekuma North election rerun.

“What I will say is that all of us love Ghana, and if God does not grant wisdom to the Ghana Police and they follow the same path as what is happening in the country, it will not be proper. In fact, if you are a police officer listening to me, and the IGP sends you to Akwatia to work without a weapon, just know that your life is at risk,” he stated.

He further recounted the Ablekuma North election violence, explaining that police officers were overpowered because they had no weapons for protection.

“A police officer without a gun… look at what happened at Ablekuma North; they pushed the police officers away,” he added.

His comments come in the wake of the Ablekuma by-election, which was marred by violence and assaults.

Several people were injured, including the former Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Mavis Hawa Koomson, who was physically assaulted during the chaos.

Medikal makes sure you eat

Media personality and podcaster David Germain Portfolio has taken to Facebook to shower praise on Ghanaian rapper Medikal, describing him as one of the few artistes who never forget those who help him secure show deals.

In a post sighted by MyNewsGh that has since attracted wide engagement, Portfolio wrote:

“If you are sitting in any board meeting as an artiste’s lobbyist, one of the few artistes who cares about you when you give him a show deal is MEDIKAL! Ask everyone who has linked MDK to a show and they tell you! That guy makes liaisons eat goo.”

His remarks underscore a longstanding conversation in Ghana’s entertainment industry about the often-thankless job of artist lobbying, the behind-the-scenes negotiation and networking that gets artistes onto big stages.

David Portfolio, who also led a grassroots campaign for King Paluta in the 2024 Artiste of the Year race, noted that Medikal’s loyalty and financial appreciation for showbiz intermediaries sets him apart.

“Many artistes take the deals and forget who made the call,” he remarked in a follow-up comment. “MDK is not like that.”

No agreement with StarTimes – GFA President Kurt Okraku

Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku

Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku has dismissed claims that the Association has reached a new five-year broadcast agreement with pay-TV network StarTimes for the Ghana Premier League.

StarTimes Public Relations Officer (PRO) Eli Kondoh, speaking on Sporty FM, had stated that both parties had resolved outstanding issues and agreed on a fresh deal.

According to Kondoh, the agreement followed a payment plan to clear debts from a previous contract, and the new deal would run from the upcoming season.

“So yes, there was an agreement to clear all of that debt. And then, there was also another plan for how the new payment for the upcoming deal would be handled. Both parties have agreed on the new broadcast deal, but the GFA is yet to sign,” he said.

However, Okraku responded via Facebook, insisting no agreement has been reached. He described the claims as false and urged the public to disregard them.

The GFA and StarTimes previously had a strained relationship, with the FA opting to allow multiple broadcasters last season following unresolved issues. With the new season kicking off in September, the GFA is yet to confirm an official broadcast partner for the league.

Otumfuo expresses interest in attending Sarkodie’s Rapperholic Concert in Kumasi

0

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, has expressed his willingness to attend Sarkodie’s much-anticipated Rapperholic Concert scheduled for September this year in Kumasi.

During a courtesy call at the Manhyia Palace on Friday, July 18, 2025, the King told Sarkodie and his team that he would be pleased to witness the event in person.

“They don’t allow me to go out often but this one, I will like to attend and watch the event myself,” Otumfuo said.

The visit was to officially inform the Asantehene about the upcoming concert and to seek his blessings and consent. Sarkodie, born Michael Owusu Addo, was accompanied by his manager Angel Town and Nabil Alhassan of Event Factory.

They presented their plans and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to engage with the royal household.

The King offered words of advice to Sarkodie and his team, encouraging them to remain humble and focused in their pursuits. He also assured them of his support, including his readiness to attend the show.

Sarkodie’s Rapperholic Concert, traditionally held in December in Accra, is one of Ghana’s most prominent annual music events. Hosting the event in the Ashanti Region marks the second time the show will take place in Kumasi, following a successful edition previously held there.

The 2025 concert is expected to draw thousands of fans and industry stakeholders, making it a significant cultural and entertainment event for the region.

‘I saw you taking her number; she is not in the market so don’t attempt’ – Bagbin warns MPs eyeing Ewurabena

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has cautioned Members of Parliament (MPs) not to make advances toward the newly sworn-in MP for Ablekuma North, Ewurabena Aubynn of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking during her swearing-in on July 22, 2025, the Speaker jokingly warned some MPs whom he claimed were already showing interest in the new legislator.

“The House is now blessed with a new member, a female, bringing the number of women in the House to 41. If this is not a blessing, then what else is?

“I saw some of you taking her telephone number. Please, Honourable Members, she is not in the market, so don’t attempt,” Bagbin said, drawing laughter from the House.

According to the Speaker, Aubynn, who entered Parliament after a rerun of election in her constituency, is “off the market,” hence MPs should desist from making romantic advances.

The swearing-in ceremony was preceded by a walkout by the Minority Caucus.

The protest followed the Speaker’s decision to deny a request from Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, to deliver a statement before the ceremony commenced.

Ewurabena Aubynn’s swearing-in comes after a fiercely contested parliamentary rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency.

The rerun was held in 19 polling stations after the Electoral Commission (EC) nullified the results of the original December 2024 election.

The decision followed widespread concerns over electoral irregularities, including unsigned result forms, discrepancies in vote tallies, and procedural violations during the collation process.

Following the rerun conducted earlier this month, Aubynn secured a narrow victory with 34,090 votes, defeating the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Akua Afriyie, who polled 33,881 votes.

I won’t boast like Bawumia – Ato Forson distances himself from cedi ‘arrest’ politics

0

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson says he will not follow in the footsteps of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia by claiming to have “arrested” the Ghana cedi.

The Minister, who presented the 2025 Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review to Parliament earlier in the day, appeared on PM Express on JoyNews, where he took a direct swipe at what he described as past fiscal recklessness.

“I can’t say I have arrested the cedi, the cedi has appreciated, that is what I can say,” Dr. Forson stated in response to suggestions that the government had finally achieved stability for the local currency. When pressed further, he added pointedly, “I’m not a policeman.”

The Finance Minister rejected Bawumia’s assertion that the recent appreciation of the cedi was not the result of any specific policy by the current administration but rather due to global trends, including U.S. tariff changes and the weakening dollar.

“So first of all, let me name one policy. Number one, they [Akufo-Addo administration] were indisciplined. We are disciplined. That is the bottom line. They were spending recklessly when the central bank was printing money as if there was no tomorrow.

“At one point, they printed until inflation reached 54%. You know, when that happens, you deplete your reserves. It is not happening now. The central bank is not printing. The Government of Ghana has been disciplined. The fiscal consolidation is happening. So why won’t you build reserves?”

Dr. Forson turned his attention squarely on Bawumia, questioning why the man who had touted himself as an economic saviour could not deliver on his promises during his tenure.

“If, for example, he knows that he could do this, why didn’t he do it during the 8 years of office. He was there as Vice President and chairman of the economic management team.”

When host Evans Mensah pointed out that Bawumia wasn’t the boss, Forson countered, “He was the chairman of the economic management team. Remember, he touts himself as the Messiah and he said he was going to fix it.

“He had eight years in office, why couldn’t he do what we are doing. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia had eight years in office. There was a time he said that he has arrested the cedi. Why couldn’t he do it?”

Despite the host citing data showing a 42.6% appreciation of the cedi and urging the minister to lay claim to success, Forson maintained a cautious stance.

“Let me say that I’m very focused. We want to ensure that we’ll end the year with the same level of appreciation. We want to make sure that this level of appreciation and the stability we are seeing is sustained. That is where my focus is.”

Ghana’s Dirty Energy & Caffeine Drinks Business Uncovered

The Dirty Business Of Caffeine In Ghana Report By Accra Street Journal
The Dirty Business Of Caffeine In Ghana Report By Accra Street Journal

This investigative research by Accra Street Journal’s Team, Samuel Kwame Boadu and supported by the SKB Journal Team revisits the rise of caffeine consumption in Ghana and unpacks how a lack of oversight from both health authorities and import systems is putting thousands of lives—especially youth—at risk in the name of convenience and energy

Caffeine is no longer just your morning pick-me-up as research by the Accra Street Journal Team led by Samuel Kwame Boadu. In Ghana, it has quietly morphed into a booming — and often unregulated — industry. Beneath the glossy marketing of energy drinks and so-called herbal tonics lies a concerning public health blind spot: excessive caffeine consumption, aggressive imports, and a weak regulatory framework that is allowing a potential crisis to brew.

Caffeine’s Hidden Footprint

Energy drinks — from international giants like Monster and Red Bull to local brands such as Rush, Storm, and Run — now line almost every kiosk shelf in Accra and Kumasi. These products are aggressively marketed, particularly to young adults, drivers, sports athletes and students. Yet many Ghanaians remain unaware of the caffeine content in each bottle or sachet as researched by SKB Journal with our team. Perhaps you should read an article published by SKB JOURNAL titled “How Unhealthy Are Energy Drinks in Ghana? A Look Behind the Buzz”

A 2017 paper by the African Journal of Food, Agriculture, Nutrition and Development sighted by Samuel Kwame Boadu highlighted that energy drink consumption among Ghanaian youth was becoming a growing public health concern due to high caffeine levels and lack of consumer knowledge. According to their findings per given to Accra Street Journal Team, some local energy drinks contain up to 160mg of caffeine per serving — more than a double espresso.

Who Is Importing It?

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) classifies most energy drinks and caffeine-containing products under general beverages, making it difficult to track caffeine imports specifically. However, market research by Euromonitor International estimated Ghana’s energy drink market to be worth $56 million in 2023, a significant rise from under $10 million in 2015.

Much of the caffeine consumed in Ghana is imported, either as an ingredient in energy drinks or as part of dietary supplements. Importers range from registered beverage companies to independent traders using informal supply chains. This makes enforcement of dosage standards and labeling even more difficult.

Is It Regulated?

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) Ghana requires registration of all caffeinated beverages, but experts say enforcement is spotty. While the FDA mandates labeling, there is no upper limit for caffeine content in energy drinks, unlike the EU which caps it at 320mg per litre, or the US FDA which requires clear disclosure above 200mg per serving.

In 2018, the FDA briefly suspended the licenses of several herbal drinks after they were found to contain caffeine and sildenafil (Viagra) without proper labeling. Yet the products quietly returned to market, repackaged and rebranded, raising concerns about loopholes in enforcement.

What Health Experts Are Saying

Dr. Paul Nsiah, a clinical pharmacologist at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, warns of caffeine dependence in Ghana’s youth. “We are seeing more young adults coming in with symptoms of insomnia, palpitations, and even anxiety — all linked to chronic energy drink consumption. It’s not just coffee anymore. It’s a culture of chemical performance.” he briefly told a reporter of Accra Street Journal

A 2021 review published in The Pan African Medical Journal found that in several African countries, including Ghana and Nigeria, there was a spike in emergency cases involving elevated heart rate and high blood pressure directly linked to caffeine overdose, particularly from energy drinks.

The Influence of Culture and Misconceptions

Caffeine has also become entangled with social myths. Taxi drivers are known to drink multiple bottles during night shifts, believing it will “boost virility” or “keep the body warm,” as captured in a 2022 informal study by University of Ghana sociology students. The report noted that over 68% of surveyed drivers consumed more than one energy drink per night, unaware of its cumulative effects.

What Needs to Change

The Ghanaian government, through the Ministry of Health and the FDA, must begin by tightening caffeine labeling laws. Every beverage, tonic, or supplement with caffeine must disclose the exact amount per serving — in bold — with accompanying health warnings.

Secondly, importers and local manufacturers must be held to global caffeine limits. This will require an overhaul of beverage classification systems at the ports and consistent post-market surveillance.

Lastly, the Ghana Education Service (GES) and Ghana Health Service (GHS) should launch targeted public awareness campaigns on the risks of excessive caffeine use, especially in schools and lorry stations.

Conclusion by Samuel Kwame Boadu (Founder & Editor-In-Chief)

Caffeine is legal. But legality doesn’t mean safety — especially when it’s sold in unregulated volumes, marketed to the most vulnerable, and imported under broad beverage codes. Ghana needs a clearer caffeine policy before its casual consumption becomes a national crisis.

‘We will not default’ – Ato Forson assures bondholders as GH¢20bn DDEP payment plan unfolds

0

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has assured Ghanaians that government remains fully committed to honouring all its domestic debt obligations under the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP).

He was emphatic in vowing that “we will not default.”

Delivering the 2025 Mid-Year Budget Review on Wednesday, July 24, Dr. Ato Forson disclosed that in just the first half of the year, the government had already paid GH¢9.8 billion in coupon payments to DDEP bondholders, of which GH¢3.6 billion was capitalised as part of restructuring agreements.

Additionally, GH¢1.1 billion was disbursed to non-tendered bondholders—those who did not participate in the debt exchange—settling all outstanding debt service arrears from 2024.

“For the second half of 2025, an amount of GH¢10.2 billion is due as coupons on the DDEP bonds and GH¢724.1 million as debt service for the non-tendered bondholders,” Dr. Forson noted.

In what appeared to be a direct response to growing anxieties among investors and analysts, the Finance Minister said the Mahama administration was committed not only to fulfilling these obligations but also to restoring trust in Ghana’s fiscal credibility.

“It is important to note that government remains committed to honouring its debt service obligations and has therefore made adequate preparations towards full settlement of all debt service in 2025 and beyond,” Dr. Forson declared.

The government’s DDEP, launched in 2022 as part of its broader IMF-backed economic reform agenda, was a difficult but necessary step to restructure Ghana’s unsustainable debt burden.

Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II, President of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs and Paramount Chief of the Dormaa Traditional Area, has been appointed Chairman of the Governing Council of the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), Sunyani.

Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II, known in legal circles as Justice Daniel Mensah, currently serves as a High Court Judge.

The Dormaahene was officially sworn into office by the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, at a ceremony held on July 23, 2025.

The Paramount Chief has earned nationwide respect for his ability to balance his traditional leadership role with his judicial duties.

Speaking at the inauguration, Haruna Iddrisu conveyed President Mahama’s congratulatory message to the Dormaahene.

“On behalf of President Mahama and my good self, I convey hearty congratulations to you. Your stature and integrity are well-recognized across the country,” he said.

Commending UENR for its achievements, the minister noted, “I recognize you as the Chairman of the University of Energy and Natural Resources. I commend the institution for its aggressive infrastructure drive over the years, including the multi-purpose Bank of Ghana Auditorium, the State-of-the-Art Administration Block, the sports complex, lecture pavilions, and laboratories.

“I am also aware of a proposal to fund additional infrastructure through partnerships. However, due to IMF limitations, the Republic of Ghana is restricted from borrowing. That said, I am reviewing a proposal to secure over €200 million to support further infrastructure development at the university.”

He further urged the new Chairman to help address governance issues, particularly the legal challenges surrounding the office of the Pro-Vice Chancellor.

“Nana, I have known you since my early years of legal practice. I know your values, and it is in recognition of your integrity that the President has appointed you to chair this Council. You are expected to bring discipline to the governance of the institution.”

In his acceptance speech, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II assured the Minister and the university community of his commitment to effective leadership.

“Together with other Council members, we will address the petitions and litigation currently facing the university. We will ensure these matters are resolved within the shortest possible time, so we can focus on advancing the university’s work.

“In conclusion, I reiterate our commitment to working collaboratively with all stakeholders to achieve the university’s goals. Together, we can achieve greatness and cement UENR’s position as a leader in higher education.”

Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama, exercising his constitutional mandate under the 1992 Constitution of Ghana is expected to submit a list of 21 High Court judges to the Judicial Council for consideration and possible appointment to the Court of Appeal which includes Dormaahene.

The Government of Ghana is set to boost tourism along the Volta Lake with the introduction of “Show24,” a key pillar of the Volta Economic Corridor project under the 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Programme.

The Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, revealed this during the presentation of the 2025 Mid-Year Budget Review in Parliament on Thursday, July 24, 2025.

According to the minister, Show24 will focus on developing tourism clusters and hospitality hubs around the Volta Lake, positioning the area as a significant attraction to drive economic growth through tourism and service-oriented investments.

“Show24 will develop tourism clusters and hospitality hubs along the lake,” parts of the minister’s report read.

The initiative forms part of a broader strategy to unlock the vast economic and environmental potential of the Volta Lake and its surrounding lands through the Volta Economic Corridor.

The project also aims to revive and expand Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s original vision of the Volta Project as a hub for agro-industry, trade, and transport.

In addition to Show24, other components of the Corridor Project include Grow24, which will irrigate over two million hectares of farmland for year-round farming, Make24, for establishing agro-industrial parks, and Connect24, which will transform the lake into a major inland transport route linking all parts of the country.

Dr. Forson assured Parliament that the Ministry of Finance will outline further support for this transformative programme in the 2026 budget.

“This year has been difficult; maybe we are not saying it. It has been difficult for us, the economic managers,” he said. “It’s only that we’re focused and we are dealing with the situations.”

His comments come as the Mahama-led administration continues efforts to stabilise the economy, improve public financial management, and build on recent gains in key macroeconomic indicators.

Despite the ongoing hardships, Dr. Ato Forson reiterated the government’s resolve to steer the nation toward recovery and long-term stability.

GIHOC launches reset agenda to tackle GH¢427m debt

0

The Chief Executive Officer of GIHOC Distilleries Limited, Jones Borteye Applerh, has committed to clearing the company’s over GH¢427 million legacy debt as part of a sweeping industrial recovery and transformation agenda.

Addressing journalists during a media tour of the company’s factory on July 24, 2025, Borteye Applerh said GIHOC is undergoing a reset that will be anchored on discipline, efficiency, and delivery.

“This is not just a change in management. This is a call to integrity, discipline, and above all, delivery. GIHOC must rise again,” he declared.

He revealed that the company is currently operating at less than 40 percent efficiency, with some of its equipment dating as far back as 1964.

He described the financial situation as dire, with debts exceeding GH¢427 million, including unpaid taxes to the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), pension arrears, loans, and obligations to suppliers, MASLOC, and other creditors.

He noted that the lack of raw materials had stalled production for months, resulting in the near disappearance of GIHOC’s flagship brands from the market.

“Let me be frank, GIHOC is facing its own challenges just like other SOEs; but they are not insurmountable.”

In just under three months of assuming office, the new CEO says the tide has begun to turn. GIHOC has procured 2.6 million bottles and reversed the “no bottle return” scheme introduced by his predecessor.

The company has also resolved its ethanol supply crisis, thanks to what he described as “the kind benevolence of a traditional ethanol supplier of GIHOC,” and repaired aging equipment — including machines that had been idle for years.

He further highlighted internal reforms, noting that “internal controls have been tightened, we are plugging every leak.”

Production has also resumed in full force. The sachet line, G Tot, is currently operational 24/7, positioning the company as a prime player in the government’s 24-hour economy initiative.

“We are poised for the charge given by H.E the President under Ghana’s 24-hour economy Policy. As you all acknowledge, GIHOC is an easy candidate.”

Looking ahead, Applerh outlined a three-horizon strategy. In the short term, the company will stabilise operations through full audits, strict cost controls, and renegotiation of debts with GRA, SSNIT, MASLOC, and other creditors.

The medium-term plan focuses on growth through rebranding of key products such as Takai, Sorento Wine, and Chevalier, reactivation of exports across ECOWAS, and revamping of the Kumasi bottling water plant.

In the long term, the CEO hinted at transformative projects such as the possible construction of a new ultra-modern plant in the Volta Region, revival of the Aboso Glass Factory to ensure local bottle production, and establishment of a dedicated logistics fleet to control distribution.

He also highlighted the corporate values that would underpin this transformation:

“We will be transparent. We will be merit-driven. We will value dialogue over confrontation. We will promote gender equity and youth inclusion. We will be aligned with the RESET agenda and the national industrialisation plan.”

He concluded by rallying all stakeholders to get involved in the company’s revival.

“GIHOC is not one person. It is not for the Board Members alone. It is all of us—staff, investors, suppliers, distributors, and customers. We invite scrutiny. We welcome partnerships. We need your trust.”

SIGA to reshape performance contracts in support of 24-Hour economy

0

The State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA) has signaled plans to review and realign the performance contracts of specified entities under its oversight, in line with the government’s 24-hour economy initiative.

According to SIGA, the goal is to ensure public sector workers have a clear understanding of their work schedules—paving the way for more job opportunities and improving overall productivity.

Speaking to the media after a leadership dialogue held on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, on Ghana’s 24-hour economy—organised by BERKH Africa in partnership with the Institute of Directors-Ghana—SIGA Director-General Prof. Michael Kpessa-Whyte emphasised the need to adapt performance contracts to reflect the goals of the initiative.

“One of the ways we can track the impact of the 24-hour economy is by monitoring the performance and productivity of specified entities under SIGA. These entities already operate under performance contracts with defined Key Performance Indicators (KPIs),” Prof. Kpessa-Whyte stated.

“To align with the 24-hour economy, we must tweak the framework of these contracts—ensuring that where feasible, entities operate beyond the traditional 9-to-5 schedule, potentially extending work hours into the evening.”

Meanwhile, Executive Secretary of the National Labour Commission, Dr. Bernice Anowa Welbeck, called for enhanced collaboration with capacity-building institutions to support businesses transitioning to the 24-hour model. She also highlighted the need for better resourcing of the Labour Department to enable effective supervision of its implementation.

“When labour inspections are conducted, findings related to worker exploitation can be reported. If unresolved after advisory, the matter can be escalated to the Commission for action,” she explained.

Abdul Nasser Alidu, Head of Strategy and Programmes at the 24-Hour Secretariat, identified agriculture as a key pillar of the initiative—particularly under the Grow 24 programme. He noted that value chains such as rice, maize, tomatoes, onions, oil palm, and soybeans are being prioritised due to their influence on food inflation.

He also revealed plans to establish agro-industrial parks along the Volta Economic Corridor to bolster productivity in the sector.

In her opening remarks, Lizzy-Ann Kwaggbedzi, Country Lead for BERKH Africa, emphasized that the 24-hour economy extends beyond simply extending business hours.

“The idea of a 24-hour economy is not just about keeping businesses open longer; it challenges us to innovate business models, expand market access, leverage digital transformation, and build resilient supply chains,” she said.

The theme for the event was: “Innovating for Growth: Adapting Business Models to Ghana’s 24-Hour Economy”.

Debt restructuring programme was a betrayal of pensioners – Dr Ato Forson

0

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has criticised the previous administration’s handling of Ghana’s debt crisis.

He accused the Akufo-Addo-led government of not only mismanaging the economy but also stripping pensioners of both their life savings and their dignity.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on Thursday, July 22, just hours after presenting the 2025 Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review to Parliament, Dr. Forson rejected suggestions that the current government’s progress should be attributed to the fiscal space created by the NPP administration’s debt restructuring.

“First of all, the debt restructuring for me was not well structured, it was very badly structured,” he said in response to a question about whether the debt exchange program had given the government breathing room.

“I say so in the sense that, you would ask, why do you restructure your debt and create such a hump?”

The Minister questioned the logic behind the debt profile created under the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP), describing it as reckless and cancerous.

“Are you setting someone up to fail? No one restructures a debt like this. Because restructuring a debt by creating this kind of humps can be cancerous. It can set the country back to another economic disaster like we saw in 2022,” he warned.

But it was his comments on how pensioners were affected that carried the most emotional weight.

“In fact, you do a debt restructuring to the extent that you deny pensioners of their savings and their dignity cannot be said to be a good debt restructuring,” Dr. Forson declared.

He blamed the previous government’s excessive borrowing for pushing Ghana into a financial corner that left citizens and creditors on a collision course.

“Why is it that government of Ghana should have gone into debt restructuring when it was avoidable in the first place. It is because the Akufo-Addo government borrowed and borrowed until Ghana could not pay its debt.

“They borrowed and borrowed until the needs of the citizens and then the needs of the creditors collided,” he said.

“That is not the kind of governance we want to do,” Dr. Forson concluded, distancing the current administration from the economic policies of its predecessor.

Former head of Central African football body jailed for war crimes

0

Edouard Ngaïssona was elected to the executive committee of the Confederation of African Football in February 2018.

The former head of the Central African Republic (CAR) football federation, Patrice-Edouard Ngaïssona, has been found guilty of committing 28 war crimes and crimes against humanity by judges at the International Criminal Court (ICC).

He was accused, alongside Alfred Yekatom, of coordinating attacks against the country’s Muslim population in 2013-14.

Yekatom, nicknamed Rambo, was found guilty of 20 charges. The judges gave their verdict after a trial lasting almost four years involving more than 170 witnesses and nearly 20,000 items of evidence.

Ngaïssona was sentenced to 12 years, and Yekatom to 15 years.

Violence has gripped the CAR for much of the past decade, but a recent peace deal led to the dissolution of two rebel groups this month.

CAR was plunged into turmoil in 2013 when predominantly Muslim rebels from the Séléka group seized power in the majority Christian country.

A band of mostly Christian militias, called the anti-Balaka, rose up to counter Séléka after then-President François Bozizé was ousted.

Ngaïssona and Yekatom were convicted of numerous crimes, including murder, torture and persecuting a religious group.

Ngaïssona was acquitted of rape, while Yekatom was cleared of enlisting children as soldiers.

Both men had denied all charges.

The prosecution set out the alleged system of command, saying Ngaïssona provided funds and instructions to anti-Balaka groups in 2013 and 2014.

Yekatom was a commander who allegedly led fighters into the capital, Bangui, on 5 December 2013, where civilians were slaughtered.

The prosecution said the pair’s strategy was to make all Muslims their target, describing them as “enemies of the nation”.

Yekatom authorised his fighters to attack Muslim civilians, including to slit throats, cut off ears and bury people alive, the prosecution alleged.

Asked to enter a plea at the start of the trial, both men rejected all the charges.

Media reports at the time indicate that at least 1,000 people were killed in tit-for-tat clashes in Bangui in December 2013, and half the city’s population fled in that month alone.

Who is Patrice-Edouard Ngaïssona?

He was the self-declared political co-ordinator of anti-Balaka forces.

Ngaïssona was barred from running for CAR president in 2015 because of his alleged role in the atrocities.

He is a former head of the CAR’s football federation and briefly served as sports minister before being elected to the executive committee of the Confederation of African Football (Caf) in February 2018.

His appointment was criticised by several human rights groups.

“If the allegations were true, I wouldn’t be here today,” he told AFP news agency at the time. “[I don’t] mix politics and sport – everything I’ve done has been for the good of my country.”

French authorities arrested him in December 2018 and he was transferred to the ICC in January 2019.

Who is Alfred Yekatom?

Yekatom was elected as an MP in 2016, despite being subject to UN sanctions.

He was arrested in October 2018 after he fired a gun in parliament, then ran away, after a row with a fellow MP.

His extradition to the ICC was the first from CAR.

The International Federation for Human Rights (known by its French acronym FIDH) said it signalled the authorities there were committed to fighting impunity.

Female exec captured in viral Coldplay concert clip resigns

0

A US tech company’s chief people officer, who was apparently caught on a big screen at a Coldplay concert embracing the company’s CEO, has resigned.

Kristin Cabot, Astronomer’s chief people officer, is no longer with the company and has resigned, the firm told the BBC in a statement.

Her departure follows that of Andy Byron, the company’s former CEO, who left last week after the company announced he would be placed on leave and investigated.

The BBC has been unable to independently confirm the identities of either person in the clip.

It shows a man and a woman, who were identified by US media as co-workers, embracing on a jumbo screen at the arena before they abruptly ducked and hid.

After seeing the pair abruptly try to hide from the camera, Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin said to the crowd: “Either they’re having an affair, or they’re just very shy.”

The video, which showed the pair swaying to music at the concert before trying to hide, gained millions of views on social media. It was then shared across platforms, turned into memes and made fun of on television programmes.

As internet sleuths attempted to identify the pair and fake statements surfaced about the incident, Astronomer put out a statement announcing an investigation into the matter, without specifying the video, and said its CEO would be placed on leave.

The following day, the company announced that Mr Byron had resigned.

The company, which deals with data, analytics and artificial intelligence, announced that co-founder and chief product officer Pete DeJoy was appointed interim CEO.

“The events of the past few days have received a level of media attention that few companies – let alone startups in our small corner of the data and AI world – ever encounter,” Mr DeJoy said in an update after taking the reins.

He noted the company became a “household” name almost overnight and would continue on its path forward, and “commitment to building something great”.

Sule Binchera dumps Ken for Bawumia ahead of NPP primaries

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and Alhaji Sule Binchera Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and Alhaji Sule Binchera

In a significant shift within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alhaji Sule Binchera, former constituency coordinator for Kennedy Agyapong in the Yendi Constituency, has officially joined the campaign of former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the party’s presidential elections in January.

The seasoned grassroots organiser, known for his longstanding loyalty to the Kennedy Agyapong camp, made the announcement on Wednesday, describing the move as a call to duty in the interest of party unity and Ghana’s future.

“This is not about personal loyalty. It’s about the survival and success of our great party,” Binchera said. “Bawumia has shown the readiness, maturity, and vision to lead the NPP into the next chapter. I am proud to be part of that journey.”

Binchera’s defection is seen as a strategic blow to Kennedy Agyapong’s internal campaign and a boost to Bawumia’s growing influence in the northern region.

His credibility and mobilising power in Yendi and its surrounding areas have made him a respected voice among the party’s rank and file.

Bawumia, who is currently touring parts of the Northern Region, expressed gratitude for the endorsement.

“We welcome Alhaji Binchera and commend his courage. This is the time to come together and consolidate our strength as a party. Breaking the eight is not a slogan—it’s a mission we must all take seriously.”

As the race for the NPP flagbearer intensifies, defections such as this may prove pivotal.

With Binchera now in his corner, Bawumia continues to cement his image not only as the establishment’s candidate, but as a bridge-builder capable of bringing all factions under one umbrella ahead of the 2025 general elections.

Michael Nyinaku cleared of all charges in high-profile Beige Bank case

Former CEO of the defunct Beige Bank, Michael Nyinaku Former CEO of the defunct Beige Bank, Michael Nyinaku

Former CEO of the defunct Beige Bank, Michael Nyinaku, has been acquitted of all 43 criminal charges leveled against him, including stealing, money laundering, and fraudulent breach of trust, in a landmark ruling delivered by the Accra High Court.

This decision marks a dramatic turning point in one of the most watched financial cases following the 2018 banking sector clean-up.

The court ruled that Nyinaku had no case to answer, effectively ending a years-long legal battle that placed him at the center of alleged financial misconduct.

Beige Bank, one of several indigenous banks affected by the central bank’s reforms, had its license revoked in August 2018 by the Bank of Ghana over what the regulator described as severe irregularities and non-compliance.

Following the revocation, the institution was placed under receivership, leading to a detailed investigation and subsequent charges by the Office of the Attorney-General.

The prosecution claimed that Nyinaku diverted over GH¢1.2 billion of depositor funds between 2015 and 2018, using various entities he owned or controlled.

These included transfers from customer fixed deposit accounts to Beige Capital Asset Management, the creation of a fictitious savings and loans account to facilitate transactions, and other alleged manipulations involving companies within the Beige Group.

However, the court found that the prosecution had failed to provide compelling evidence to back its claims. Despite the scale and seriousness of the accusations, the judge determined that the facts presented did not warrant a conviction.

England international, Marcus Rashford has broken an impressive 39 years old record after joining Barcelona on a season-long loan move from Manchester United.

The move, which will see the 27-year-old attacker stay with the La Liga giants till 2026, makes Rashford the first English player to sign for Barcelona since Gary Lineker in 1986.

Per the details of the loan deal, the Catalan giants have the option of signing the England international on a permanent basis for £30.3m (35m euros) in 2026.

This move marks a significant milestone for Rashford, who will be playing outside the English Premier League for the first time in his professional career.

Rashford fell out of favour with manager Ruben Amorin at Manchester United and was dropped since December 2024, a situation that forced him to spend the second half of half of the 2024-25 season at Aston Villa on loan.

BBC quoted him as saying, “I’m very excited,” …“It’s a club where people’s dreams come true, they win big prizes.”

“What the club stands for means a lot for me. I feel like I’m at home and a big factor in my choice to come here is because it is a family place and a good place for good players to showcase their skills. I’m eager to learn the Barcelona way.”

After dropping his iconic Man United number 10 jersey at Old Trafford, Rashford has been offered the jersey number 14 at his new club.

Ofori-Atta’s understanding of economic management was reckless borrowing

Policy Analyst, Steve Manteaw Policy Analyst, Steve Manteaw

Policy Analyst Steve Manteaw has described Ken Ofori-Atta as Ghana’s most incompetent finance minister.

He says in Ghana’s economic history, he will go down as the worst to have managed the country’s economy.

To Steve Manteaw, Ofori-Atta’s only understanding of the management of an economy was reckless borrowing and nothing else.

But for Ken Ofori-Atta’s recklessness, the country would not have found itself in the dire economic situation it is in.

“You mean the most incompetent finance Minister in the economic history of Ghana, who’s only understanding of economic management was reckless borrowing? It is his mismanagement that led the country into the DDEP in the first place,” he said in a post on social media.

Steve Manteaw used the opportunity to hail Cassiel Ato Forson’s management of the economy in six months indicating that “The macro data have exceeded most IMF programme targets. And all it took was fiscal prudence and efficient spending.

Ato toaso!!!“.

Crop Tops for Ladies: A Bold Fashion Statement

0

Crop tops have become an essential piece in many women’s wardrobes, transcending seasonal trends to become a staple in casual, chic, and even formal fashion. Originally gaining popularity in the 1980s and 1990s, crop tops have made a significant comeback in recent years, offering endless styling possibilities for women of all body types and fashion preferences.

A crop top is a short top that typically exposes the midriff, although variations exist that show more or less skin depending on the cut and design. They come in a wide range of styles, including off-shoulder, sleeveless, long-sleeved, knotted, and wrap tops. Because of this variety, crop tops can be worn for a casual day out, a beach trip, a night party, or even paired with a blazer for a semi-formal look.

One of the biggest appeals of crop tops is their versatility. They pair effortlessly with high-waisted jeans, skirts, shorts, or palazzo pants. High-waist bottoms, in particular, can provide a more balanced look by offering coverage and elongating the legs. For a more layered appearance, crop tops can be worn under overalls, dungarees, or paired with a kimono or jacket.

In terms of fabric, cotton crop tops are great for everyday comfort, while silk or satin versions offer a more polished look for evening wear. Statement crop tops with ruffles, sequins, or bold prints can elevate a simple outfit into a fashion-forward ensemble.

Importantly, crop tops are not limited by age or size. Modern fashion encourages women to embrace their bodies and wear what makes them feel confident. The rise of body-positive fashion has contributed to more inclusive designs that cater to diverse body shapes and sizes.

In conclusion, crop tops for ladies are more than just a trend—they are a symbol of modern, expressive fashion. With the right styling, anyone can incorporate a crop top into their wardrobe to reflect personal style, comfort, and confidence.

Gov’t asking Ghanaians to tighten belts while living large – Sammi Awuku

Member of Parliament for Akwapem North, Sammi Awuku Member of Parliament for Akwapem North, Sammi Awuku

Member of Parliament for Akwapem North, Sammi Awuku, has accused the current government of engaging in superficial governance, prioritising public relations over genuine economic relief.

In an interview on Channel One’s Newsroom, Awuku launched a blistering critique of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), suggesting that its governance model thrives on “P.R., optics and settings.”

“I see a trend. We have said that this government is a government of three things: P.R., optics and settings,” he said. “So, anything that positions them as doing something, but in actual fact, the pocket economy speaks for itself.”

The former National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) said the government has failed to back its rhetoric with real change, particularly on cost-saving measures.

Citing an example, he pointed to the supposed cancellation of fuel allocations for government appointees. But according to him, this commitment exists more in announcement than in action.

“The same government says they were scrapping the fuel allocation for appointees of the government,” Awuku recalled, before exposing what he claims is the current reality.

“Today, we are at Jubilee House, and you can see that the fuel depot was functioning. The depot at Castle Osu, where you have several appointees and these National Security operatives and people who do not even qualify to even draw fuel from this vending point are actively still drawing fuel.”

He said the government’s messaging on sacrifice contradicts its own indulgences. “It is like the Ghanaian is being asked to tighten her belt, and the government is using elastic around the waist,” he quipped.

Old video of Mustapha Hamid promising to rescue Ghana resurfaces amidst GH₵280m extortion scandal

0

An old video of former Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Dr Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, has resurfaced online amidst allegations of extorting GH₵280.51 million from oil marketing companies.

The video, popularized ahead of the 2016 general elections when he was spokesperson for then-candidate Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, features his catchphrase “We need to rescue this country, walahi.”

Dr Abdul-Hamid coined this mantra to urge Ghanaians to vote out the NDC, then in power, citing economic mismanagement, corruption, and insensitivity to Ghanaians’ plight.

However, he now faces accusations of massive extortion, starkly contrasting his anti-corruption stance prior to the 2016 general elections which his party eventually won.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has alleged that Dr Abdul-Hamid masterminded a GH₵280 million extortion scandal when he headed the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) as its Chief Executive.

The news of his alleged scandal has generated huge interest among many Ghanaians especially the youth and social media users.

Online commentators have criticized him, suggesting his purported “rescue” mission while his party was in opposition was nothing than a political ploy strategically engineered to hoodwink the people.

Meanwhile, Dr Abdul-Hamid has pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy, extortion, and using public office for profit.

He was granted bail in the sum of GH₵2 million with two sureties when he appeared before the court on Wednesday, July 23, 2025.

No government contract should be awarded in foreign currency from July 24

0

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

President John Mahama has ordered that effective Thursday, July 24, 2025, no government contract should be awarded in any foreign-denominated currency.

According to the Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, the pricing of goods and services and the award of contracts in foreign currency pose significant risk to fiscal management with severe implications for the stability of the local currency.

During the presentation of the 2025 Mid-Year Budget Review, he said, “Unfortunately, foreign currencies are becoming the means of transacting business in Ghana. This trend, if not checked, will erode the confidence in our currency, drive inflation, and result in the loss of value in the symbol of our sovereignty.

“To curb this unfortunate development, President John Dramani Mahama has directed that, beginning today, 24th July 2025, no contract awarded by the government irrespective of the source of funding should be denominated in foreign currency.”

He added that; “We also want to use this opportunity to remind the public that per the Foreign Exchange Act, 2006 (Act 723), companies, institutions and individuals are prohibited from pricing, advertising, receiving or making payments for goods and services in foreign currencies in Ghana without written authorisation from the Bank of Ghana.”

The Bank of Ghana has also warned against transacting any form of business in foreign currencies in Ghana.

According to the Central Bank, this is illegal.

It’s been difficult changing the mindset of my appointees – President Mahama

0

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has expressed his frustration in altering the mindset of some of his appointees and even the Ghanaian people.

However, the president has indicated that he will not relent in his drive to reset Ghana and help strengthen Democracy.

He made this known when investigative journalist, Manasseh Azure, visited his office to appreciate him for the decision to end the government’s contract with Zoomlion.

During the visit, the president indicated that the District Assembly Common Fund will be sent to the Assemblies as against giving them 43% while the DACF keeps the remaining which is mostly used for shady procurement deals.

“President Mahama also stated that his government had decided to ensure the District Assemblies Common Fund is distributed to the assemblies, instead of the money being spent in Accra. In the past, the assemblies got only 43% of the Fund, while the remainder was used for shady procurements and contracts at the DACF in Accra. Of course, a chunk (if not all) of those procurements went to Zoomlion and its subsidiaries,” he wrote.

The investigative journalist also stated that; “While acknowledging the difficulty in changing the mindset of Ghanaians, including some of his appointees, President Mahama said he was focused on resetting Ghana and helping to strengthen our democracy.”

Meanwhile, a team is said to be working on a document to guide the government’s decision to give MMDs the power to manage their sanitation.

Read Manasseh’s post on his visit to Mahama

Yesterday, I had the honour of meeting the President of the Republic, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, at the Jubilee House. We discussed governance and accountability, and he encouraged me to keep up with my accountability journalism, a job he described as very difficult.

I took the opportunity to thank him for the bold decision he took to discontinue the 19-year fraudulent Zoomlion-YEA contract. I also asked for an update on this and the reform of the sanitation management he had promised, and he responded.

A team is working on a document to guide the government’s decision to give the metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies (MMDAs) the power to manage their sanitation.

President Mahama also stated that his government had decided to ensure the District Assemblies Common Fund is distributed to the assemblies, instead of the money being spent in Accra. In the past, the assemblies got only 43% of the Fund, while the remainder was used for shady procurements and contracts at the DACF in Accra. Of course, a chunk (if not all) of those procurements went to Zoomlion and its subsidiaries.

While acknowledging the difficulty in changing the mindset of Ghanaians, including some of his appointees, President Mahama said he was focused on resetting Ghana and helping to strengthen our democracy.

I wished him well, and I pray he succeeds. For if he succeeds, Ghana prospers.

Ghana Spends US$400M Annually on Tomato Imports Despite Farming Potential

Ghana imports over $400 million worth of tomatoes yearly from Burkina Faso despite abundant agricultural resources, Food and Agriculture Minister Eric Opoku has revealed.

The disclosure came during Adom TV’s investigative documentary “Hunger After Plenty,” exposing systemic failures in Ghana’s food supply chain.

According to Minister Opoku, the nation’s fertile lands and extensive farmer base contrast sharply with recurring shortages that force massive imports. “It is heartbreaking that despite our blessings, we face seasonal hunger,” Opoku stated in the documentary, which highlights vast tomato and yam surpluses left rotting in fields due to inadequate preservation infrastructure.

The film documents severe post-harvest losses between March and July annually, triggering nationwide price spikes. Experts interviewed propose urgent investments in cold storage, processing facilities, and buffer stock systems to bridge seasonal gaps. A cited UN report indicates over 40% of Ghana’s 34 million population experience food insecurity.

Scenes show market traders discarding unsold produce while consumers struggle with unaffordable prices. “Hunger After Plenty” questions how an agriculturally endowed nation faces such contradictions, urging policy reforms and infrastructure modernization to harness domestic potential.

‘Let President Mahama govern for a year before judging him’ – Former Ledzokuku MCE to NPP

0

President John Dramani Mahama President John Dramani Mahama

Former Ledzokuku Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) and member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mordecai Abusuayedom Quarshie, has called on members of the party to allow President John Dramani Mahama to govern for at least one year before subjecting his administration to criticism or comparison.

According to a report by starrfm.com.gh on July 23, Quarshie appealed to members of the NPP to exercise restraint and give the president space to implement his vision for the country.

He emphasised that history has shown how public perception of leadership can shift over time, citing the case of former Head of State, General Ignatius Kutu Acheampong.

“Even General Acheampong, who Ghanaians vilified so much and eventually tied him to a stake and shot him, now attracts positive reviews from some quarters. Today, you hear comments about him and you wonder if it’s the same person being talked about,” he said.

The former MCE encouraged the NPP to prioritise internal reorganisation, party unity, and a recommitment to the principles of public service.

“What is important is that the NPP unites, come together, and commit to service to humanity and not just to ourselves,” he stated.

He noted that the party is undergoing a period of reflection and preparation, and expressed confidence that when completed, the NPP would be well-positioned to present a renewed and appealing message to the Ghanaian electorate.

“We are in the process of preparing, and I believe firmly that when we finish and come back, we can present something that Ghanaians will find wholesome and attractive again,” he added.

One of the most unforgettable moments in professional wrestling history occurred on March 29, 1987, when Hulk Hogan faced André the Giant in the main event of WrestleMania III at the Pontiac Silverdome. Before a crowd of over 93,000 fans, Hogan stunned the world by lifting the 7-foot-4, 520-pound André and slamming him to the mat—a feat that had never been accomplished in WWE’s spotlight.

The move, now known as “the body slam heard around the world,” marked the climax of their David vs. Goliath storyline and symbolized a seismic shift in the popularity of wrestling. Hogan followed the slam with his signature leg drop to secure the victory, solidifying his status as the face of the sport.

Years later, Hogan reflected on the moment with awe. “I was worried because I didn’t know if I could get him up,” he said in a 2023 interview. “It was different than anything that’s ever happened… the greatest moment ever in my life as far as my career”.

The match remains a defining chapter in WWE history, credited with propelling wrestling into mainstream pop culture and showcasing the spectacle that WrestleMania would become.

Hulk Hogan’s health battles and multiple surgeries

Hulk Hogan’s medical history reflects the tough physical toll decades of professional wrestling had on his body.

Over the course of his career and retirement, he underwent more than 25 major surgeries, including extensive work on his back, neck, hips, shoulders, and knees.

As a result, Hogan struggled with nerve damage and chronic pain, which led to an extended battle with addiction to prescription painkillers and alcohol. He later spoke candidly about overcoming these addictions, crediting CBD use and total sobriety for his improved health and mental clarity.

“There was a period of time, about five or six years ago, where I was in crazy pain to the extent I couldn’t even function. When you have back surgery, it takes a good year for your body to recover, yet they were cutting on me every four months,” Hogan told People magazine in 2023.

He said that while he needed the pain medication then, once things started to get better, he was still taking the drugs.

“Once things started to wind down, they continued giving me the same meds. It got to a point where I’d recovered from the tenth back surgery, and the pharmacy would call me and say, ‘Your prescription’s ready,’ and like a dog chasing a bone, I’d go pick it up,” he said.

He said that he finally had a reckoning with himself and said, ” ‘I’m not in pain. I don’t need this. My body hurts from all the wrestling injuries, but I’m not in this excruciating pain that I can’t live with.'”

Hogan said he’d also given up drinking at the end of 2022 for his health.

In early 2025, he had a four-level cervical spine fusion procedure to address chronic neck pain and nerve issues. While this surgery led to temporary mobility concerns—reportedly requiring a cane—Hogan continued to make public appearances and remained active in media engagements.

Hogan passed away from cardiac arrest at his home in Clearwater, Florida, on Thursday at the age of 71.

Inside Hulk Hogan and Donald Trump’s lengthy friendship

Hulk Hogan and Donald Trump have shared a long-standing public association dating back to the 1980s, when Trump hosted WrestleMania IV and V at his Trump Plaza in Atlantic City.

Hogan was the headliner at both events, and the partnership helped elevate WWE’s mainstream appeal. The two men, both larger-than-life showmen, developed a mutual admiration, frequently appearing together in media and promoting each other’s ventures. Their relationship reflected a blend of wrestling spectacle and business glamor.

In the 2000s, both transitioned into reality television—Hogan with Hogan Knows Best and Trump with The Apprentice—further cementing their status as household names. Though Hogan didn’t participate in Trump’s famous “Battle of the Billionaires” match at WrestleMania 23, he supported Trump’s involvement in WWE, which culminated in Trump being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2013. Hogan himself had been inducted in 2005, and both were seen as symbols of Americana in the entertainment world.

Politically, Hogan flirted with support for Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign, even joking about being his running mate.

In 2024, during Trump’s presidential campaign, Hogan appeared at the RNC where he called Trump a “hero” and “gladiator.”

“Let Trump-a-mania run wild, brother,” he said before ripping off his shirt off in an unforgettable moment.

There were rumors in the early 1990s and again in the 2010s, that Hogan might try to run for public office—particularly Governor of Florida, where he resides. These never materialized, and Hogan himself usually dismissed them as media speculation or fan chatter.

Hogan’s Hollywood career: From Rocky III to Mr Nanny

Hulk Hogan was one of the first wrestling to make the jump from WWE to Hollywood.

Hogan’s first major film role came in “Rocky III” in 1982, where he played the character Thunderlips, a flamboyant wrestler who takes on Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky Balboa in a charity bout. The role was brief but memorable, launching Hogan into mainstream film consciousness and opening doors in Hollywood.

He went on to star in a number of films throughout the late ’80s and ’90s, typically in action-comedy roles tailored to his all-American strongman image.

Among his most famous works was “No Holds Barred” (1989), produced by WWE (then WWF), in which he starred as Rip, a wrestling champion standing up to corruption. Though critically panned, the film developed a cult following and became a quintessential example of Hogan’s brand of over-the-top heroism.

In the 1990s, Hogan leaned heavily into family films. Notable entries include “Suburban Commando” (1991), where he played an intergalactic warrior stranded on Earth, and “Mr. Nanny” (1993), where he portrayed a former wrestler turned childminder. These roles, while often met with lukewarm reception from critics, contributed to Hogan’s status as a beloved figure among younger audiences. He also starred in “Santa with Muscles” (1996), a holiday-themed film that has since become infamous for its campy charm.

Television was another platform where Hogan maintained a presence. He starred in the action series “Thunder in Paradise” (1994), playing a former Navy SEAL piloting a high-tech boat while battling crime. Though the show was short-lived, it enjoyed reruns and VHS success and became a cult favorite among Hogan’s fans.

In the 2000s, Hogan’s Hollywood relevance shifted more toward reality TV with “Hogan Knows Best” (2005–2007), a VH1 series that followed his family life and introduced viewers to his children, Brooke and Nick. The show became a hit and reignited interest in his public persona, leading to various spin-offs and appearances.

While he was never a critically acclaimed actor, Hogan’s Hollywood legacy is characterized by his larger-than-life presence, wholesome (albeit exaggerated) screen roles, and his ability to maintain crossover fame between wrestling and entertainment. His films, often kitschy and formulaic, nonetheless became part of the cultural fabric for a generation who saw Hulk Hogan not just as a wrestling icon, but as a bona fide movie star.

Debt restructuring programme was poorly structured – Finance Minister Ato Forson says

0

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has criticised the debt restructuring programme undertaken by the Akufo-Addo administration, describing it as poorly designed, cancerous, and fundamentally unfair.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on Thursday, July 22, just hours after presenting the 2025 Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review to Parliament, he questioned the very architecture of the debt overhaul he inherited.

“First of all, the debt restructuring for me was not well structured, it was very badly structured,” he told host Evans Mensah.

“I say so in the sense that, you would ask, why do you restructure your debt and create such a hump?”

The Finance Minister did not mince words, suggesting the design of the restructuring raised suspicions about the intent behind it.

“Are you setting someone up to fail? No one restructures a debt like this. Because restructuring a debt by creating this kind of humps can be cancerous.”

He said the consequences of such a fiscal approach could be devastating, reminiscent of the economic turmoil that rocked the country in recent years.

“It can set the country back to another economic disaster like we saw in 2022.”

Dr. Forson rejected any suggestion that the previous government’s restructuring gave his administration fiscal room to manoeuvre.

“So the debt restructuring that they [NPP] did, I can’t give them credit,” he stated.

He further condemned the controversial decision that saw pensioners being forced to forgo their returns during the process.

“You do a debt restructuring to the extent that you deny pensioners of their savings and their dignity, cannot be said to be a good debt restructuring.”

Taking aim at the root cause, the Minister blamed reckless borrowing under Akufo-Addo’s watch.

“Why is it that government should have gone into debt restructuring when it was avoidable in the first place. It is because the Akufo-Addo government borrowed and borrowed until Ghana could not pay its debt.”

He painted a dire picture of the moment fiscal irresponsibility collided with the needs of the people.

“They borrowed and borrowed until the needs of the citizens and then the needs of the creditors collided. That is not the kind of governance we want to do for you.”

Govt to introduce new road maintenance trust fund to cater for better roads

The government is set to introduce a new Road Maintenance Trust Fund aimed at improving how roads are maintained across the country.

This was announced by the Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, during the presentation of the 2025 Mid-Year Budget Review in Parliament.

According to him, the new trust fund will replace the current Ghana Road Fund, as part of efforts to reorganize and refocus government’s approach to road maintenance.

Dr. Forson stated that the Minister for Roads and Highways will soon lay the road maintenance trust fund bill before Parliament for approval.

“The Road Maintenance Trust Fund will come with a new governance structure, a fairer formula for allocating funds, and greater transparency in how the road fund levy and other resources are used,” he explained.

He added that the government has identified 166 constituencies that are in dire need of road infrastructure.

To address this,he noted that the plan was to rehabilitate 10 kilometres of roads every year in each of these constituencies.

“This means about 5,000 kilometres of roads will be reconstructed over the next three years,” Dr. Forson said.

He underscored the importance of the initiative saying, it will improve road conditions, enhance transportation, and benefit both commuters and businesses across the country.

The Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, took to the streets in Accra to celebrate his victory when the Supreme Court ruled in favour of an application, he filed challenging a court order that cast doubt on his legitimacy.

In a unanimous decision, the Supreme Court has overturned a Kumasi High Court order—which was upheld by the Kumasi Court of Appeal—that sought to reinstate Nii Tackie Adama Latse II into the National House of Chiefs’ register as the Ga Mantse in a legal battle in which Nii Tackie Adama Latse II challenged Teiko Tsuru II for the Ga Mantse throne.

Videos of the Ga Mantse and his kingsmen jubilating on the streets of Accra after the Supreme Court’s judgment have gone viral.

King Teiko Tsuru II is seen waving a white cloth to a cheering crowd while sitting in his vehicle.

All the vehicles in the Ga Mantse’s convoy were blaring their horns as their occupants could be heard singing the appellations to the king.

Some men, who were accompanying the convoy on foot, could also be seen jubilating.

About the case:

King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II filed an application at the Supreme Court challenging the ruling of a High Court in Kumasi that the name of Nii Tackie Adama Latse II be reinstated in the records of the National House of Chiefs as Ga Mantse.

This came after the Court of Appeal in Kumasi threw out an appeal challenging the High Court, which was filed by the National House of Chiefs and one other party.

King Tsuru II, in his application, which was dated June 18, 2025, asked the Supreme Court to nullify the ruling of the High Court.

The Ga Mantse, through his lawyer Prof Atudiwe Atupare, also asked the apex court of the land to overrule the ruling of the Court of Appeal, which affirmed the judgment of the High Court that Nii Adama Latse II should be re-entered into the register of Ga Mantse.

Prof Atudiwe Atupare also argued that the Court of Appeal made “an error of law patent on the face of the record” in upholding the High Court ruling despite the fact that it (the High Court) lacked jurisdiction.

NPP’s Gold-for-Oil was just cash payments, not barter

0

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has strongly criticised the Gold-for-Oil policy introduced by the Akufo-Addo administration, describing it as ineffective and misleading.

Speaking in an interview with Joy News on Thursday, July 24, shortly after presenting the 2025 Mid-Year Budget Statement to Parliament, Dr. Ato Forson said the policy did not operate as a true barter system, contrary to claims by the former government.

The policy, championed by former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, had been credited by the previous administration as a major contributor to the cedi’s stability.

However, Ato Forson dismissed those claims, insisting the gold was never exchanged directly for oil.

According to him, while the Bank of Ghana did purchase gold, it was merely added to the country’s reserves.

Dr. Ato Forson’s comments cast fresh scrutiny on the Gold-for-Oil initiative, which was launched to reduce pressure on foreign exchange reserves and stabilise fuel prices during a period of economic turmoil.

“I’m not aware that there was a direct barter. Gold-for-Oil didn’t work properly. BoG was paying the suppliers of the crude oil and petroleum products with cash. That is what they were doing; they never paid them with gold. It was pure trade, nothing more than what they were touting. Nothing, it was far from what they were touting. It was nothing; there was no barter where gold was going to change for oil.

“No, nothing of the sort happened. I’m telling you for a fact, there was no barter. They were keeping the gold. You could see that the gold reserves increased; that was a fact. They were keeping the gold they were buying,” He stated.
