The Government and the Hospital Pharmacists Association of Ghana (GHOSPA) have issued a public warning against excessive alcohol consumption and drug abuse during the Christmas season, cautioning that such practices pose serious health risks.
According to the Association, the festive period often comes with an increased tendency for people to abuse alcohol and misuse medications, driven by celebrations and social gatherings.
GHOSPA says this trend can lead to severe health complications if not checked.
Speaking to Channel One News on Friday December 26, President of the Association, Dr. Emmanuel Owiafe, urged the public to exercise restraint and be mindful of the impact of alcohol and drugs on the body.
He explained that excessive use of these substances can adversely affect vital organs, including the lungs, heart, and other parts of the body.
Dr. Owiafe further advised individuals to seek professional guidance before taking any medication. “If you need medication, you should speak to the appropriate prescriber or pharmacist so that the right medicine is given in the correct quantity and taken according to the prescribed regimen,” he said.
The Association encouraged the public to prioritise their health during the festivities by drinking responsibly, avoiding drug misuse, and seeking expert medical advice when necessary.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has called on all school staff to uphold integrity and responsibility in the management of public resources following the arrest of two staff members at Awaso STEM Senior High School in the Western North Region.

Veteran French coach Jean Louis Gasset, who was fired at the last Africa Cup of Nations by Ivory Coast before they went on to win the trophy, has died aged 72, his former French club Montpellier announced on Friday.
Hosts Ivory Coast were sensationally beaten 4-0 by minnows Equatorial Guinea in their last group game at the 2023 edition in the biggest upset in tournament history, finishing third in their group.
Gasset was dismissed after the shock defeat, but the Ivorians earned a reprieve as one of the best third-placed finishers to qualify for the knockout rounds and eventually won the title under Gasset’s assistant, Emerse Fae.
One month after returning to France, Gasset was appointed coach at Olympique de Marseille but stayed for only four months.
He went back to Montpellier last season, but when they were headed for relegation, he was sacked in April.
Gasset spent most of his playing career at Montpellier, where his father had been one of the club’s founders.
The cause of death was not given.

A Ghanaian delegation made up of family members, friends, business associates and staff of the Executive Chairman and President of Sentuo Group in Ghana, Mr Xu Ningquan, has accompanied him to China to attend the wedding ceremony of his daughter.
The delegation showcased Ghana’s rich cultural heritage throughout the ceremony, highlighting the strong personal and professional ties Mr Ningquan has built with Ghana over the years.
Also in attendance was a delegation from the Fujian Association, an organisation of Chinese businesspeople based in Ghana. The wedding ceremony, which took place in Changle, Fuzhou, in China’s Fujian Province, was described as one of the high-profile society events in the area.
The visit, which doubles as a two-week vacation for members of the Ghanaian delegation, will also include tours of several popular tourist destinations across China.
Speaking on the significance of the gesture, a close friend and business associate, Dr Mohamed Raii, described Mr Ningquan’s decision to sponsor his Ghanaian family and friends to China for his daughter’s wedding as thoughtful and symbolic of his deep connection to Ghana.
“Mr Ningquan has made Ghana his home and acknowledges that much of his business success is owed to the support he has received from staff, friends and business associates in Ghana, whom he now considers family,” Dr Raii said.
He added that Mr Ningquan’s decision to share such a significant family milestone with members of his Ghanaian community reflected how deeply rooted his affection for the country had become.
“For many of us who travelled from our countries of birth to Ghana, our achievements there have been a source of pride and loyalty. Whenever we can, we want to share that story and what Ghana has enabled us to achieve,” he noted.
Dr Raii further said the gesture demonstrated a love for Ghana that went beyond sentiment, describing it as a sense of belonging that had translated into tangible actions aimed at the country’s advancement and progress.
He congratulated Mr Ningquan on the successful wedding ceremony of his daughter, saying he deserved all the joy and pride that accompanied such an important family milestone.
Police in the Volta Region have arrested 10 suspects in connection with the shooting incident at the Ho Central Mosque that left several people injured.
The arrests mark a major step in ongoing investigations into the violent attack, which occurred amid heightened tensions at the mosque on the morning of Friday, December 26.
Speaking to Citi News, the Volta Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Chief Inspector Francis Gomado, confirmed that all 10 suspects are currently in police custody, assisting with investigations.
Chief Inspector Gomado explained that although the suspects arrested are helping police with their inquiries, investigations remain active as some individuals believed to have played key roles in the attack fled the scene in a pickup vehicle.
He noted that efforts are underway to locate and arrest them to complete the probe.
Police have also begun examining the broader circumstances surrounding the shooting, including a long-standing leadership dispute within the mosque, which investigators believe may have contributed to the violence.
Assuring residents of calm, Chief Inspector Gomado said the situation in Ho is under control, with police working closely with other security agencies to maintain peace and prevent any further disturbances.
He urged the Muslim community and the general public to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement as investigations continue.
“10 persons have so far been arrested in connection with the attack, while those who arrived in a pickup vehicle fled the scene. Efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest the remaining suspects to assist with police investigations.
“The 10 individuals arrested are currently in police custody. We urge the Muslim community to remain calm and allow the police to handle the matter,” he said.

Ghana has been ranked 61st out of 163 countries in terms of peace, dropping six places from its previous position. The country has also fallen from 4th to 7th most peaceful in Sub-Saharan Africa, reflecting concerns over rising security issues, governance, and localized tensions.
This development has raised concerns among stakeholders, prompting the Universal Friendship Organisation (UFO) to take a bold step in championing peace development through friendship globally.
The President of UFO, Samuel Adobah, has been at the forefront of promoting peace and stability through friendship for years. The organisation’s mission is to promote peace, understanding, tolerance, and unity among diverse communities. Through his tireless efforts, Adobah has drawn attention from organisations worldwide, culminating in his recent recognition at the Global Peace Ambassadors Awards.
The organisers of the Global Peace Ambassadors Awards have taken notice of Adobah’s dedication to promoting peace and unity, awarding him the Youth Peace Advocacy of the Year award. This recognition is a testament to his leadership and commitment to creating a more peaceful world.
In a congratulatory message, Adobah reiterated the importance of collective efforts in promoting peace and unity, emphasizing that peace is a shared responsibility that requires the commitment of all. He also expressed concern about the Bawku conflict and its devastating impact on the nation, calling for a more sustainable and inclusive approach to peacebuilding.
The Global Peace Ambassadors Awards ceremony celebrated individuals and organizations making a positive impact on global peace and development. Other notable awardees included former Black Stars player Samuel Nkum, renowned musician Madam Akosua Agyapong, and Member of Parliament for Okaikwei South Constituency, Hon. Ernest Adomako, who were recognized for their contributions towards peacebuilding.
The Universal Friendship Organisation’s efforts to promote peace and unity have been commendable, and Adobah’s recognition at the Global Peace Ambassadors Awards is a testament to the organisation’s impact. As the organisation continues to champion peace development through friendship globally, we look forward to seeing the positive impact of its work.
Comoros played out a goalless draw with Zambia in the Africa Cup of Nations finals, but the small Indian Ocean island nation came close to an upset win in their Group A clash on Friday.
Comoros had the ball in the net in the 19th minute, but Myziane Maolida’s attempt was ruled out after a VAR review for a foul in the build-up to the goal.
Maolida had tapped in the ball from close range after a mazy run down the left flank by Rafik Saifi, who played in a pinpoint cross.
But possession was won in a dangerous tackle by Yacine Bourhane on Owen Tembo, and after consulting the sideline VAR screen, the referee annulled the goal.
Comoros also had a late chance when Faiz Selemani headed over the top of the Zambia goal after being set up by captain Youssouf M’Changama’s hanging chip.
—- NIGERIA ONLY —-
Zambia, the 2012 winners, put up a laboured showing.
The draw at Stade Mohammed V left Comoros, the smallest nation in the tournament’s 24-team field, with a single point from their opening two matches, after they were beaten by hosts Morocco in last Sunday’s opening match. Zambia have now drawn both their opening fixtures.
Both countries will have a tough last group match on Monday, which, if they lose, will almost certainly see them eliminated.
Comoros must beat Mali in Casablanca on Monday to stand any chance of progress, while Zambia are up against Morocco and in need of at least a draw.
Morocco and Mali are meeting in Rabat later on Friday in the last of four Cup of Nations matches played on Boxing Day.

Japhet Festus Gbede is an NDC communications member
Fri, 26 Dec 2025 Source: Koku Agbenaza, Contributor
A communication team member of the ruling National Democratic Congress, Japhet Festus Gbede has strongly condemned the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) recent criticisms of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Communications Director, who doubles as the CEO of Goldbod, Sammy Gyamfi, describing them as a display of “economic amnesia, intellectual bankruptcy, and political desperation.”
In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, Gbede dismissed the NPP’s claims regarding the alleged $214 million GoldBod loss as “laughably incompetent, flagrantly misleading, and absurdly shallow.”
According to him, the opposition party’s characterisation of valuation adjustments as a “loss” shows a fundamental misunderstanding of sovereign financial management.
“Calling valuation adjustments a ‘loss’ is clueless, reckless, and embarrassingly misinformed, a spectacle that insults the intelligence of every Ghanaian,” the statement reads.
Gbede added that the attacks on Sammy Gyamfi are politically motivated and rooted in envy and desperation rather than fact or principle.
He did not spare the NPP from criticism, highlighting what he called the party’s disastrous economic record.
“This is the same NPP that supervised the most catastrophic economic mismanagement in Ghana’s history, ballooned public debt to obscene levels, collapsed the cedi, strangled businesses, destroyed livelihoods, and finally dragged a proud nation to the IMF in humiliation,” Gbede stated.
The NDC communicator further argued that the NPP lacks moral authority and credibility to lecture anyone on governance, accountability, or economic management.
He described their sudden focus on fiscal prudence as “convenient, insincere, and utterly fraudulent,” pointing out that the party had previously presided over failed programs, reckless borrowing, and policy confusion.
Gbede concluded by asserting that Ghanaians deserve serious opposition that values intelligence, integrity, and honesty, rather than “recycled propaganda from those who nearly wrecked the republic.”

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei-Tutu II, on Christmas Day hosted a durbar in honour of traditional rulers, palace officials, courtiers, and subjects at Afia Kobi Park within the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.
The details of the event were shared by Opemsuo Radio on December 26, 2025.
“Otumfuo Osei-Tutu II, Asantehene, hosted a Christmas durbar for Nananom, his staff, courtiers, and subjects at Afia Kobi Park, Manhyia Palace in Kumasi on December 25, 2025,” the post read.
The durbar was part of activities marking the Christmas festivities at Manhyia Palace and brought together traditional leaders, political figures, and institutions affiliated with the Asantehene.
Why the Asantehene cannot be called ‘Nana Otumfuo’
Present at the durbar was the Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Ofori Agyeman-Boadi, who attended on behalf of the Ashanti Regional Minister. He was joined by a former Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah, and a former Mayor of Kumasi, Sam Pyne.
The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, was also in attendance, alongside a representative of the Tuareg Chief in Ghana and other dignitaries.
Several institutions and groups under the Manhyia umbrella also paid homage to Otumfuo Osei-Tutu II. Union Berlin defender Derrick Kohn is embracing the unique opportunity to face his birth nation when Ghana meets Germany in a March friendly. The recently capped Black Stars player views the Stuttgart encounter as a compelling chapter in his international career, having spent his entire life in Germany before switching allegiance to represent his ancestral homeland.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirmed the fixture for March 30, 2026, at 8:45 pm local time. The match forms part of both teams’ final preparations ahead of the FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. For Kohn, the occasion carries personal significance beyond standard international duty.
Despite possessing Ghanaian heritage through his parents, Kohn grew up immersed in German football culture. He developed through Bayern Munich’s youth system and represented Germany at under 19 level in 2017. His professional journey took him through Bundesliga sides including Werder Bremen before his current position at Union Berlin, where he completed a permanent four million euro transfer from Galatasaray this summer.
The 25 year old finally made his Black Stars debut in November against Japan after prolonged documentation delays. He had received his first Ghana call up in September for World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Mali but could not participate due to incomplete FIFA clearance. When the paperwork resolved ahead of the Asian tour, Kohn started at left back in the 2-0 defeat to Japan at Toyota Stadium.
Ghana head coach Otto Addo expressed enthusiasm about testing his squad against elite opposition. The Hamburg born coach, himself a former Bundesliga professional who won the German championship with Borussia Dortmund in 2002, understands the value of facing his former nation. Addo noted the fixture provides an excellent benchmark for measuring Ghana’s progress against one of football’s traditional powerhouses.
Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann welcomed the challenge from a tactical perspective. He indicated Ghana’s transition play would offer preparation for facing Ivory Coast in Germany’s World Cup group. The four time world champions view the friendly as an opportunity to refine strategies against African opposition known for pace and directness.
The Stuttgart fixture marks the fourth meeting between the nations. Germany claimed a commanding 6-1 victory in their first encounter in Bochum in 1993, a result Ghanaian supporters remember as the Bochum Disaster. The teams later met twice at World Cups, with Germany securing a narrow 1-0 group stage win in South Africa 2010 through Mesut Ozil’s strike, before both sides played out a thrilling 2-2 draw in Brazil 2014.
Kohn’s club manager at Union Berlin, Steffen Baumgart, praised the defender’s adaptability and work ethic during his initial Bundesliga appearances this season. Those qualities attracted Otto Addo’s attention when seeking solutions to Ghana’s persistent left back vacancy. Many observers believe Kohn can provide long term stability in a position that has remained unsettled for years.
Former GFA Vice President George Afriyie endorsed the strategy of arranging high profile friendlies before the World Cup. Speaking on Asempa FM, Afriyie described such matches as essential preparation tools that will help players when the tournament begins. GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum confirmed Ghana plans additional friendlies against top opposition before their June opener.
Ghana qualified for the World Cup as Group I winners and will compete in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama. The Black Stars begin their campaign against Panama on June 17 in Toronto, face England on June 23 in Boston, and complete the group stage against Croatia on June 27 in Philadelphia. Success in those fixtures could send Ghana beyond the group stage for the first time since their memorable 2010 quarter final run.
For Kohn, the Germany match represents both homecoming and statement. The opportunity to perform against the nation where he built his career offers validation of his decision to represent Ghana. His unique perspective as someone straddling two football cultures could prove valuable as the Black Stars prepare for their fifth World Cup appearance.
Hearts of Oak got back to winning ways in the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League with a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Samartex at the University of Ghana Stadium on Friday, December 26, 2025, a result that lifted the Phobians to second place on the league table.
The match sprang into life almost immediately, with both sides settling quickly after kickoff.
Hearts found the breakthrough when Hamza Issah struck in the sixth minute to send the home supporters into raptures, putting Hearts of Oak ahead and setting the tone for an intense contest.
Buoyed by the lead, Hearts nearly doubled their advantage in the 19th minute when Martin Karikari, picking up a fine pass from Hamza, curled a shot goalwards, only for the Samartex goalkeeper to parry it out for a corner.
Samartex grew into the game and threatened an equaliser, but goalkeeper Solomon Agbasi produced a series of timely interventions, including another crucial save around the 35th minute to preserve Hearts’ slender lead.
‘You ain’t my daddy’ – Deontay Wilder recalls heartbreaking moment with step son
After the break, Samartex won the first corner of the second half, but the danger was cleared by Ali Mohammed, keeping the Phobians in control.
Hearts continued to press for a second goal, and in the 66th minute, a slick exchange between Hamza and Karikari released George Paaku, whose effort narrowly missed the target.
As the clock ticked down, Hearts maintained their intensity, with Paaku again involved during the five minutes of added time.
Hearts held on for a vital win and now move onto 28 points after 16 games, level with leaders Aduana Stars, who have played a game less, as the title race continues to gather momentum.

A drone attack killed two Chadian soldiers at a military camp near the Sudan border before dawn on Friday, local authorities and a security source said, adding it was not immediately clear who was behind the strike.
Two people were killed and one seriously injured in the attack on the border town of Tine, said Hamit Hassan, prefect of the department that includes Tine. He said he had no information on who was responsible.
A Chadian military intelligence officer told Reuters the drone came from Sudan but it was unclear whether it was launched by the country’s army or paramilitary Rapid Support Force.
“We are still in the process of confirming the origin of this drone. If it is a Sudanese military drone, we will exercise our right to retaliate,” the officer, who asked not to be named because he wasn’t authorized to speak on the record, told Reuters.
“The air force base in (the eastern city) Abeche is already on high alert, and ground reinforcements are already in Tine.”
Sudan’s army and the RSF did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Tine serves as a transit camp for Sudanese refugees who later move on to safer camps away from the border, though humanitarian sources say a lack of funds to provide water, sanitation, and shelter at inland camps has slowed relocation efforts.
More than 12 million people have already been displaced by the ongoing war in Sudan, according to the International Rescue Committee (IRC).
Basake Holy Stars FC welcome Hohoe United for the final Ghana Premier League fixture of 2025, with both sides targeting a strong first-round finish.
Holy Stars come into the encounter in encouraging form, unbeaten in their last five matches. Their home record has been a key strength this season, having suffered just one defeat at the AAK II Sports Arena. That consistency has kept them firmly in contention for a top-half position.
Hohoe United, meanwhile, sit just above Holy Stars on goal difference, underlining how finely balanced this contest is. However, their away form remains a concern. They have managed only three goals in seven road matches and have conceded in each of their last six away outings, leaving little margin for error.
Basake Holy Stars were held to a draw by Medeama in their previous match and will be keen to turn home advantage into maximum points. Hohoe United arrive under pressure after back-to-back defeats against Bibiani Gold Stars and Berekum Chelsea, results that exposed defensive frailties.
With both teams level on points and separated only by goal difference, Sunday’s clash carries significant weight. A positive result could shape their momentum heading into the second phase of the season, making this a contest neither side can afford to approach cautiously.
Legendary Nigerian musician 2Face Idibia, also known as 2Baba, has made a candid admission about his personal life.
Speaking at a recent event in Edo State on December 26, 2025, the music icon declared, “I have a confession, and I make this confession everywhere I go to set the record straight,” he stated.
He added, “I have stopped impregnating women casually.”
This statement immediately ignited social media and sparked intense public discussion.
Delivered with his characteristic bluntness, this comment is seen by many as a significant personal announcement, signaling a new chapter for the artiste.
“Ask anyone; they’ll tell you I’m an innocent man now,” he shared.
This declaration comes amidst ongoing conversations about responsible fatherhood and the impact of public figures’ personal lives on their careers.
2Face, known for his numerous hit songs and long-standing presence in the Nigerian music scene, has often been the subject of media attention regarding his family life.
“It’s all love to everyone who made it to this event; I see you all,” he continued, welcoming his fans.
His latest statement suggests a deliberate effort to redefine his public image and personal conduct.
The implications of 2Face’s statement are far-reaching, opening up dialogues about personal responsibility, public accountability, and the evolving dynamics of relationships in the spotlight.
Fans and critics alike are eager to see how this declaration will influence his future actions and the narrative surrounding his personal life.
He concluded, “I’m not going to entertain all those internet people here. We’ve already provided content for two years; there’s no need to go further. We’re here to just enjoy ourselves and network. One love to everyone present today.”
Kwesi Pratt Jnr has reacted to Randy Abbey’s new role at COCOBOD
The Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, has commented on the appointment of Randy Abbey as Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), highlighting the difficult circumstances surrounding the role.
Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on December 24, 2025, Pratt recalled his initial reaction when Abbey informed him of his decision to accept the COCOBOD leadership position.
“When Randy was appointed as Chief Executive of COCOBOD, he told me, and I said, ‘Randy, what are you going to do there? You are making a significant contribution as a media person and so on. Why are you going there? What is the motivation?’ And so yesterday, I felt vindicated,” Pratt said.
His remarks followed Abbey’s public defence of COCOBOD’s recent decision to suspend cocoa road projects nationwide, citing the board’s heavy financial burden.
According to Abbey, COCOBOD signed cocoa road contracts worth GH¢26 billion.
He revealed that in some years, particularly between 2018 and 2019, the Public Procurement Regulatory Commission (PPRC) made no allocation for road projects, yet COCOBOD proceeded to award contracts valued at GH¢220 million and US$99 million.
He noted that the situation deteriorated further between 2019 and 2020, when additional contracts worth GH¢231 million and US$1.157 billion were approved, again without budgetary provision.
COCOBOD seeks regional security support to fight cocoa smuggling
“So, within a space of three years, COCOBOD awarded road contracts valued at about GH¢21.5 billion. The question is: how were these contracts going to be paid for based on COCOBOD’s revenue? This is the problem,” Abbey stated.
He explained that the unfunded contracts have worsened COCOBOD’s financial challenges, contributing to losses from rollover arrangements and a growing debt stock estimated at GH¢33 billion.
COCOBOD sensitises farmers on producer price for 2025/26 cocoa season
“How do you award contracts when there is no allocation? This is why the government has asked COCOBOD not to embark on road projects,” he added.

Christmas Festivities: Avenor traders, buyers speak on livestock sales
The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has reinforced Ghana’s standing as a leading force in global anti-corruption efforts after the country spearheaded the adoption of a historic resolution at the world’s largest anti-corruption summit in Doha, Qatar.
Addressing the 11th Session of the Conference of States Parties (CoSP 11) to the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC), Speaker Bagbin announced that Ghana, working in partnership with Norway, Albania and Mongolia, successfully led negotiations for the first-ever UNCAC resolution on transparency in political party financing, election campaigns and candidatures for public office.
The resolution, adopted by consensus, affirms citizens’ right to know who funds political activity and marks a significant step toward curbing corruption at its political roots.
Describing corruption as both a constitutional issue and a shared national responsibility, the Speaker said Ghana’s anti-corruption strategy is driven by strong political leadership, preventive reforms, asset recovery and robust institutions.
He pointed to the National Anti-Corruption Action Plan (NACAP) as the backbone of the country’s efforts, complemented by reforms in public procurement, the digitalisation of public financial management systems and enhanced oversight mechanisms.
Speaker Bagbin further highlighted the role of state institutions such as the Office of the Special Prosecutor and the Economic and Organised Crime Office in strengthening asset recovery and accountability, while calling for deeper international cooperation to address cross-border corruption.
On prevention, which he described as central to Ghana’s approach, the Speaker said corruption must be tackled at its source by promoting ethical values, closing systemic loopholes and limiting opportunities for abuse of power.
He noted that ongoing reforms in the public service, procurement and financial management, alongside expanded citizen participation, are aligned with the 2025 Code of Conduct for Government Officials.
Supporting Ghana’s delegation, the Chief Justice, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, acknowledged progress under NACAP but cautioned that challenges remain in translating national reforms into tangible impact at the local level.
He stressed the importance of evidence-based policymaking and sustained international collaboration to consolidate gains.
Ghana’s Ambassador to the United Nations in Vienna, Matilda Alomatu Osei-Agyeman, also underscored the benefits Ghana has derived from UNODC technical assistance, particularly in legal reforms, asset recovery and the evaluation of anti-corruption strategies, and appealed for expanded support for developing countries.
The Doha conference ended with the adoption of the Doha Declaration 2025, which reaffirms global commitment to international cooperation, technical assistance and the responsible use of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, in the fight against corruption.
Ghana’s leadership at CoSP 11 places the country at the forefront of global efforts to advance transparency, accountability and integrity in democratic governance.

His message is both personal and public-spirited, reflecting concern for families who have lost loved ones to avoidable accidents during past festive seasons.
“Joy should never turn into regret. Arrive alive every life matters.”
Beyond business and public safety, Dr. Despite places strong emphasis on the spiritual meaning of Christmas, urging Ghanaians to look beyond material celebration.
“In all the excitement, let us not lose sight of the true meaning of Christmas,” he says quietly. “Let Jesus Christ be our ultimate focus His life teaches humility, compassion, and service.”
He adds that faith has remained a steady anchor throughout his entrepreneurial journey, especially during challenging times.
“When faith leads, success follows with humility.”
As the New Year approaches, Dr. Despite expresses optimism for 2026, calling on leaders, workers, and young people to embrace discipline, innovation, and integrity.
“The future belongs to those who prepare for it with character and hard work,” he notes. “If we remain focused, united, and God-fearing, 2026 will be a year of growth and renewed opportunity.”
He reiterates his commitment to job creation, responsible enterprise, and national development through the Despite Group’s expanding footprint.
In closing, Dr. Despite offers a simple but powerful message: “To our staff, our customers, and all citizens: I wish you a Merry Christmas and a prosperous, peaceful New Year. Take care of yourselves and one another.”
The former Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central Rachel Appoh has shared deep personal reflections on her marital experiences saying she will no longer post anything about her family online.
Drawing from what she described as “terrible experiences” with marriage and social media, the former Minister for Gender Children And Social Protection announced a firm decision to completely keep her family life off online platforms.
“I have a terrible experience with marriage and social media posts, so I will never post my marriage on social media again,” she said. “I won’t post anything about my family, my husband or my children on social media — not at all.”
Speaking on a wide range of issues on Adom FM’s Work and Happiness, the former Legislator disclosed that she has been married twice, following a difficult first marriage that ended in divorce.
In her view, her earlier marriage was particularly painful because her former partner remarried before their divorce was finalized, an act she described as bigamy.
She said the experience left lasting emotional scars and shaped her current views on marriage and public exposure.
“Yes, I am married. I have remarried after my earlier divorce. I have been married twice,” she stated during the interview.
Hon. Appoh also confirmed that her current husband is not a politician, but a private individual, a decision she said was deliberate given her past experiences in public life.
While acknowledging that social media has both positive and negative sides, Hon. Appoh noted that public reactions to personal posts can be damaging, especially for public figures.
She explained that the impact of social media often depends on how people choose to interpret and react to what is shared, adding that negative commentary and scrutiny can take a serious toll on individuals and families.

Christmas Festivities: Avenor traders, buyers speak on livestock sales
By publicly cooperating with the United States on Christmas Day airstrikes, Nigeria’s government may have averted humiliating unilateral military action threatened a month ago by President Donald Trump.
But security experts say it is unclear whether such strikes can do much to hinder Islamist militants who have long menaced communities in the area.
Trump announced on Truth Social on Thursday that U.S. forces had launched a strike against Islamic State militants in northwest Nigeria at the request of Nigeria’s government.
Local media reported loud explosions in the village of Jabo in the evening of Christmas Day. Reuters has not been able to confirm whether there were casualties.
Abuja confirmed it had approved the operation. Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar said on Friday Nigeria had acted jointly with the U.S., but not targeting any specific religion.
“Nigeria is a multi-religious country, and we’re working with partners like the U.S. to fight terrorism and protect lives and property,” Tuggar told Nigeria’s Channels Television.
TRUMP THREATENS ACTION TO PROTECT CHRISTIANS
Nigeria’s population of over 230 million people is roughly evenly divided among Christians, who predominate in the south, and Muslims who predominate in the north.
Last month, Trump threatened to order his forces to take military action in Nigeria unless the authorities there acted to stop what he described as the persecution of Christians.
While Nigeria has had persistent security challenges, including violence and kidnappings by Islamist insurgents in the north, it strongly denies that Christians are subjected to systematic persecution.
Its government responded to Trump’s threat by saying it intended to work with Washington against militants, while rejecting U.S. language that suggested Christians were in particular peril.
“After Trump threatened to come guns-blazing in Nigeria, we saw a Nigerian delegation visit the U.S.,” Kabir Adamu, managing director of Abuja-based Beacon Security and Intelligence Limited, told Reuters.
“The Attorney General was involved, and agreements were signed. Then we learned of U.S. surveillance missions mapping terrorist locations.”
Participating in the strikes could raise a risk that the government could be perceived as endorsing Trump’s language on wider sectarian strife, a sensitive issue throughout Nigeria’s history.
“Trump is pandering to domestic evangelical Christian objectives with his ‘Christian genocide’ narrative,” Adamu said.
The northwestern area where Thursday’s airstrikes took place has been plagued since 2024 by increasing violence from members of the Lakurawa sect, a strict Sunni Islamist movement that claims affiliation with the Islamic State group.
Formed as a vigilante outfit, the group evolved into a jihadist movement enforcing strict Islamist rule across hundreds of villages in the area. Nigeria declared the group a terrorist organisation early this year.
“It’s very likely this is the group Trump referred to when mentioning U.S. military strikes in Nigeria,” said Confidence MacHarry, senior analyst at Lagos-based SBM Intelligence. “They’ve also been linked to widespread cattle theft, with most of the stolen animals ending up in markets along the Nigeria-Niger border.”
But Adamu questioned whether the strikes would do much to counter the insurgents, noting that the particular village hit was not previously known for harbouring militants.
“We were told the Nigerian government okayed the attack, but why Jabo when there is no record of any group there?” he said.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Export–Import Bank (Ghana EXIM Bank), Mr Sylvester Mensah, says the Bank has rolled out a comprehensive five-year export-led growth strategy aimed at driving trade expansion, strengthening domestic value chains and repositioning the institution as a disciplined development finance engine for national growth.
Addressing Ghanaian journalists at the Bank’s end-of-year gathering on Tuesday, December 23, Mr Mensah provided a detailed account of the state of the Bank when the new administration assumed office and outlined the reset underway to restore confidence, improve governance and deliver measurable economic impact.
He disclosed that as of December 31, 2024, Ghana EXIM Bank was grappling with serious structural and operational challenges, including high inflationary pressures, exchange rate volatility and weak macroeconomic conditions, which had placed significant strain on its balance sheet.
These difficulties, he said, were worsened by what he described as “dysfunctional management decisions,” leading to elevated risk exposures, weak internal controls and high levels of non-performing loans (NPLs).
According to Mr Mensah, the Bank’s gross loan portfolio stood at about GH¢1.5 billion, with severe concentration risk. Thirty borrowers alone accounted for nearly 80 per cent of total NPLs. Of these, 18 borrowers were fully disbursed but had refused to repay, while 12 were partially disbursed.
He attributed the situation to weak collateral arrangements, breaches of loan terms and poor repayment discipline, noting that the impact of EXIM financing had been significantly eroded by weak execution rather than a lack of mandate.
“The core challenge was not the absence of a mandate, but weak execution,” he stated.
To address these issues, Mr Mensah said management introduced a Reset Agenda to reposition Ghana EXIM Bank as a focused, disciplined and impact-driven development finance institution. The reset, he explained, seeks to strengthen governance, improve loan quality, fix legacy weaknesses and align the Bank with Ghana’s national economic priorities.
The Reset Agenda is anchored on Ghana’s Export-Led Growth Strategy for the period 2025–2030, which provides the framework for the Bank’s newly developed five-year strategic plan.
As part of the strategic refocus, the CEO said Ghana EXIM Bank has narrowed its lending priorities to high-impact sectors critical to import substitution, export growth and job creation. These include rice, poultry, apparel and selected non-traditional exports such as oil palm, cashew, shea and cocoa processing.
He noted that the Bank has moved away from ad-hoc lending and is now guided by data, sector studies and international best practices, with a strong emphasis on discipline in execution.
“Lending is now aligned with sector calendars, and funds are released in line with production cycles to ensure better utilisation, stronger repayment performance and improved sustainability,” Mr Mensah explained.
On legacy loans, he said the Bank has introduced new policy guidelines and a Code of Ethics, restructured partially disbursed facilities, pursued recovery of fully disbursed loans through legal means, and referred criminal matters to relevant state agencies where necessary. Senior staff have also been appointed to the boards of legacy loan companies to strengthen oversight.
Reviewing progress made in 2025, Mr Mensah said management and operational reforms had been rolled out, including organisational restructuring, stronger internal controls and the establishment of Sustainability and Strategic Impact Departments to ensure value-for-money and environmental, social and governance (ESG) compliance.
Cost-discipline measures were also introduced, including a contributory staff welfare scheme and the migration of vehicle loan financing to a commercial banking arrangement, freeing resources to support productive enterprises.
Looking ahead, the CEO said that from 2026, Ghana EXIM Bank expects stronger governance and policy alignment through deeper collaboration with the Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Ghana, as well as legal reforms to place the Bank under dual oversight by the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry and the Ministry of Finance.
Key targets under the five-year export-led growth strategy include reducing rice and poultry imports by 40 to 50 per cent within five years, achieving more than 50 per cent growth in domestic food production, and generating over US$1 billion annually in agro-export earnings from non-traditional exports.
The strategy is also expected to create more than 100,000 jobs across agribusiness, agro-processing, rice, poultry and garment value chains, improve rural incomes, boost foreign exchange inflows and gradually reduce non-performing loans.
Mr Mensah concluded that through the Reset Agenda, Ghana EXIM Bank is now better positioned to strengthen SMEs, boost exports and deliver lasting national economic impact.
“These efforts will enhance food security, reduce food inflation, improve foreign exchange inflows to support cedi stability, and strengthen Ghana’s global competitiveness,” he said.

China unveiled three venture capital funds on Friday, December 26, to invest in advanced technology sectors as Beijing intensifies its push for technological self-reliance. State broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV) reported that each fund exceeds 50 billion yuan, bringing total planned capital to more than 150 billion yuan (approximately $21.4 billion).
The funds will target early stage startups valued below 500 million yuan, with individual investments capped at 50 million yuan. This structure aims to spread support across multiple emerging companies rather than concentrating resources in a few large ventures.
Priority sectors include integrated circuits, quantum technology, biomedicine, brain computer interfaces, aerospace and other strategically important technologies. The initiative deliberately excludes “soft” technologies such as consumer internet services, marking a clear shift in government investment priorities.
An official speaking on Friday confirmed the investment parameters, emphasizing the focus on early stage companies operating in capital intensive fields. These sectors typically face difficulty attracting private funding due to high risk profiles and extended development cycles.
The launch reflects Beijing’s response to United States led export controls and growing competition in advanced technologies. China seeks to strengthen domestic innovation in areas critical to national security, industrial upgrading and long term economic resilience.
Hard technology refers to sectors requiring substantial research and development investment, advanced manufacturing capabilities and extended timelines before commercialization. Semiconductors represent a prime example, contrasting sharply with internet platforms that dominated Chinese venture capital over the past decade.
The shift away from consumer technology toward hard tech signals government determination to address vulnerabilities exposed by international technology restrictions. Recent years have seen China face increasing barriers to accessing cutting edge chips, manufacturing equipment and specialized software from Western suppliers.
State backed venture capital represents a tested approach in China’s economic toolkit. Previous government led investment vehicles have helped nurture industries including renewable energy, electric vehicles and telecommunications equipment. Success rates vary, with some initiatives producing global leaders while others struggled with inefficiency.
The funds are expected to begin deploying capital within coming months. Early investments will likely concentrate on semiconductors and advanced manufacturing, sectors where China faces the most acute technology gaps. Performance will be closely monitored as a test of whether state capital can successfully foster innovation in high risk technologies.
Private investors and venture capital firms typically follow signals from government backed funds. The launch may trigger additional private sector investment in hard technology startups, multiplying the initiative’s total impact beyond the direct government contribution.
Chinese technology startups operating in target sectors stand to benefit from improved funding access. Many have faced capital constraints as private venture firms grew cautious about long development timelines and uncertain returns characteristic of hard technology ventures.
Global technology competitors will monitor the initiative as they assess China’s advancing capabilities in strategic sectors. The combined funding exceeds annual venture capital deployment in many developed economies, underscoring the scale of China’s technological ambitions.
Further policy support may follow as Beijing seeks to accelerate breakthroughs in vital sectors. Potential measures include tax incentives for investors, government procurement guarantees for successful startups, or regulatory easing to speed commercialization of new technologies.
The exchange rate stands at approximately 7.0070 Chinese yuan per United States dollar, making the total commitment roughly $21.4 billion across the three funds. This substantial allocation demonstrates the priority leadership places on achieving technological self sufficiency.
According to INTERPOL, hackers reportedly stole over $100,000 from a Ghanaian financial institution
INTERPOL has disclosed that a ransomware attack on a Ghanaian financial institution led to the theft of about US$120,000, highlighting the growing financial toll cybercrime is taking on banks and other financial institutions across the continent.
The incident came to light during Operation Sentinel, a coordinated cybercrime operation carried out in 19 African countries.
According to INTERPOL, the attackers encrypted an estimated 100 terabytes of data, severely disrupting operations and cutting off access to critical systems.
Although Ghanaian authorities later managed to recover nearly 30 terabytes of data through advanced malware analysis, the financial loss underscored how lucrative such attacks have become for cybercriminals.
Promoted female police officer recounts going undercover as club girl to arrest suspect
The Ghana case formed part of a wider crackdown that revealed the scale of losses suffered by financial institutions and businesses across Africa.
INTERPOL said total losses linked to the investigated cases exceeded US$21 million, with hackers exploiting ransomware, business email compromise, and digital extortion schemes.
INTERPOL’s Director of Cybercrime, Neal Jetton, warned that attackers are increasingly targeting sectors that hold large volumes of sensitive data and financial assets.
He said the outcomes of Operation Sentinel demonstrate both the scale of the threat and the importance of coordinated responses.
“The scale and sophistication of cyberattacks across Africa are accelerating, especially against critical sectors like finance and energy. The outcomes from Operation Sentinel reflect the commitment of African law enforcement agencies, working in close coordination with international partners,” he said.
According to the report, 574 arrests have been made, and about US$3 million has been recovered.

Officials count votes at a polling station in Yopougon as polls close during the elections
In Ivory Coast, the opposition PDCI-RDA is accusing supporters of the ruling RHDP of carrying out a fraudulent collection of voters’ personal data ahead of legislative elections.
According to the party, individuals claiming to belong to the RHDP have been gathering names, phone numbers, voter card details, and polling station information. The PDCI-RDA says these actions are allegedly accompanied by promises of cash payments of up to 300,000 CFA francs and the distribution of motorcycles, with the aim of influencing the vote.
The ruling party has declined to comment on the accusations.
The Independent Electoral Commission, or CEI, says it does not intervene in disputes between political parties and advises anyone who feels wronged to seek legal action through the courts.
The PDCI has also raised concerns about the disappearance of more than 25,000 voter cards in the Port-Bouët constituency. The head of the CEI has dismissed the fears, saying the cards have been identified, reissued, and will be available on election day.
More than 8.7 million voters are expected to cast their ballots this Saturday, December 27, to elect 255 members of parliament.

Nyame Somafo Yaw is the Founder and Leader of Asomdwee Ntonton Som
The Founder and Leader of Asomdwee Ntonton Som, Nyame Somafo Yaw, has claimed that over 30 percent of Ghanaian prisoners are innocent and called on the government to grant a mass amnesty to ease the hardship in the country.
Addressing attendees at the 2025 Asomdwee Ntonton Som convention, Nyame Somafo Yaw stressed that many prisoners have been jailed for crimes they did not commit, saying their “souls are haunting the country.”
He further alleged that some judges were influenced by complaints when sentencing innocent individuals and emphasized that this issue needs urgent attention.
The leader urged the government to review minor cases that have resulted in imprisonment and consider granting amnesty to free those wrongly jailed.
He added that such a move would also help reduce congestion in prisons across the country, creating more space and improving conditions for those incarcerated.
A policy group has called on the Bank of Ghana (BoG) to withdraw its draft guidelines on non-interest banking, warning that the proposed framework is “not fit for implementation” due to legal, regulatory and prudential weaknesses.
In a formal submission to the central bank, Advocates for Christ Ghana – Economy, Business and Finance Gate (A4CG) said the draft guidelines contain internal contradictions and structural flaws that could undermine regulatory credibility, consumer protection, and market confidence if implemented.
“The exposure draft, in its current form, is not fit for implementation,” the group stated, adding that proceeding with the guidelines “poses material risks to the integrity of the regulatory framework and the stability of the financial system.”
The submission, dated December 23, 2025, was made in response to the Bank of Ghana’s call for public comments on the draft regulatory and supervisory framework for non-interest banking.
According to A4CG, the guidelines raise serious legal concerns, particularly around constitutional neutrality and equal treatment under the law, while also presenting supervisory and prudential challenges that could complicate enforcement.
“The draft guidelines suffer from internal inconsistencies and legal vulnerabilities that expose the Bank of Ghana to regulatory and constitutional risk,” the group said.
A4CG stressed that its position was not rooted in opposition to faith-based or alternative banking models, but in concerns over governance, consumer safeguards, and policy coherence.
“We are not opposed to innovation in financial services,” the group noted, “but such innovation must be grounded in clear legal authority, prudential soundness, and strong consumer protection.”
The group urged the central bank to withdraw the draft and re-issue a revised framework after a comprehensive technical review and broader stakeholder engagement.
“The safest and most responsible course of action is to withdraw the draft guidelines and re-issue them only after the identified defects have been fully addressed,” the submission said.
The Bank of Ghana has not yet publicly responded to the concerns raised.

Alfred Kotey Ashie, Member of Parliament (MP) for Odododiodoo Constituency, has instituted an annual amateur and juvenile boxing event aimed at discovering talents for Ghana’s national boxing teams. The inaugural showdown, dubbed “The MPs Punch,” takes place Thursday evening at Bukom Square Park.
The event, organised in collaboration with the United Coaches Association of Ghana, celebrates Boxing Day and begins at 7pm. It is open to the public and targets young boxers seeking to showcase their abilities before scouts and coaches.
In an exclusive interview, Hon. Kotey Ashie described his constituency as a major producer of Ghanaian boxing champions. However, he emphasised that talent exists nationwide and urged Ghanaians to avoid injecting politics or tribalism into sports.
“Though the Greater Accra Region has produced most of the world champions for Ghana, we see ourselves as Ghanaians first,” the lawmaker stated. He referenced the recent bout between Freezy Macbones and Jonathan Tetteh, saying it should unite rather than divide the nation.
The MP observed that both fighters appeared tired and lacked stamina, suggesting inadequate training. He praised promoters for raising organisational standards in boxing shows. Boxers who deliver exciting performances at “The MPs Punch” will receive Christmas presents as rewards.
Hon. Ashie advised young participants to arrive punctually and maintain discipline throughout the competition. He stressed that such values remain crucial for success in professional boxing.
The Odododiodoo legislator also extended greetings to the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF) ahead of its elections scheduled for Saturday, December 28. He expressed hope that winning candidates would advance the sport as Africa prepares to host the Youth Olympic Games in Senegal and eyes the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Hon. Ashie congratulated four young Ghanaian boxers who recently competed at the African Youth Games in Angola, where all returned with medals. Their achievement demonstrates the potential within Ghana’s youth boxing programme.
Bukom Square Park, located in the heart of Accra’s boxing community, has historically served as a training ground for numerous national and world champions. The venue’s selection for “The MPs Punch” reflects its significance in Ghana’s boxing heritage.
The event represents part of broader efforts to identify and nurture athletic talent at grassroots level. With proper support and training, organisers believe many young boxers can progress to represent Ghana at continental and global competitions.
Aspiring boxers and boxing enthusiasts are encouraged to attend the evening showdown, which promises competitive bouts and an opportunity to witness emerging talent in Ghanaian amateur boxing.
Hackers reportedly stole over $100,000 from a Ghanaian financial institution

Engineers And Planners Donates To Disabled Christian Fellowship And The Accra Rehabilitation Centre
Engineers and Planners Corporate Ltd has donated food items to the Disabled Christian Fellowship International and the Accra Rehabilitation Centre as part of Christmas outreach efforts. The presentation took place on Wednesday, December 24, 2025.
The company, led by Ibrahim Mahama, provided 100 bags of rice, 20 cartons of corned beef, 20 cartons of mackerel, and 20 cartons of cooking oil to support persons with disabilities during the festive season.
Francis Adjetey Sowah, Executive Director of the Disabled Christian Fellowship International and immediate past President of the Amputee Football Federation of Africa (AFFA), received the items on behalf of beneficiaries. He expressed deep appreciation for the gesture, particularly highlighting Ibrahim Mahama’s consistent generosity.
“For him to remember persons with disabilities at this crucial period of joy and merriment is commendable and should be emulated, more so because of their vulnerability,” Sowah stated. He noted that many persons with disabilities struggle to access essential commodities during festive celebrations.
Sowah described the donation as providing hope and reinforcing a sense of inclusivity for the disability community. He said the gesture would remain memorable for beneficiaries who often feel overlooked during holiday celebrations.
Rafiq Mahama, representing Engineers and Planners, presented the items on behalf of his brother and the company. He expressed enthusiasm about the timing of the donation and revealed that the organisation is planning capacity building initiatives and innovative programmes for the disability community in the near future.
The ceremony drew attendance from key figures in Ghana’s disability advocacy sector. Seth Dzidzornu, Centre Manager of the Accra Rehabilitation Centre, attended alongside his management team. Elvis Alipui and James Borteye of the Ghana Society of the Physically Disabled also participated, along with other members of the disability community.
Engineers and Planners Corporate Ltd has maintained a reputation for supporting vulnerable groups across Ghana. The company’s Christmas donation reflects ongoing efforts to include persons with disabilities in national development and social welfare initiatives.
The Disabled Christian Fellowship International works to promote the rights and welfare of Christians with disabilities, while the Accra Rehabilitation Centre provides essential services to persons requiring physical rehabilitation and support.
Both organisations serve critical roles in supporting Ghana’s disability community, which continues to face accessibility challenges and limited access to resources. Corporate donations like this help bridge gaps in support systems, particularly during periods when household expenses increase.
The beneficiaries expressed hope that more corporate entities and individuals would follow Engineers and Planners’ example by extending support to marginalised groups, especially during festive seasons when the cost of living rises significantly.
Agriculture remains the backbone of Ghana’s economy, employing a significant portion of the population and contributing meaningfully to GDP, exports, and food security. Yet, Ghana’s agribusiness landscape is undergoing a profound transformation—one driven by climate pressures, rising food demand, youth participation, technology adoption, and global market access.
The High Street Business have examined Ghana’s agribusiness ecosystem through multiple lenses: production, processing, value addition, exports, sustainability, and disease management. This consolidated editorial brings together twelve critical agribusiness themes into one comprehensive narrative—offering farmers, investors, policymakers, and entrepreneurs a panoramic view of where Ghana’s agribusiness sector stands today and where it is heading.
Agribusiness as Ghana’s Most Strategic Economic Opportunity
Ghana’s agribusiness potential goes far beyond subsistence farming. Today, agriculture is increasingly viewed as a commercial value chain, linking production to processing, logistics, exports, and retail markets.
Key drivers of agribusiness growth include:
Rising urban food demand
Import substitution policies
Youth entrepreneurship
Climate-smart agriculture
Export market opportunities
These forces cut across every subsector discussed in this editorial.
Poultry, Fish, and Livestock: Protein Demand Driving Agribusiness Growth
Protein consumption in Ghana continues to rise, making poultry farming, aquaculture, and livestock trading central to food security and income generation.
While feed costs and disease remain challenges, efficient management and local feed alternatives continue to improve profitability.
Vegetable Farming and Greenhouse Agriculture: Feeding Urban Ghana
Vegetable production has emerged as one of Ghana’s most resilient agribusiness segments.
Open-field vegetable farming supports local markets
Greenhouse farming enables year-round production of tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, and lettuce
Urban and peri-urban farming reduces transport losses
Greenhouse agriculture, in particular, represents the future of commercial vegetable farming—allowing farmers to manage climate risks while targeting premium buyers such as supermarkets, hotels, and export markets.
Rice Production and Milling: Reducing Import Dependence
Rice has become a staple food across Ghana, yet rice and milling local production continues to lag behind consumption.
Opportunities exist across the value chain:
Irrigated and rain-fed rice production
Aggregation of paddy rice
Modern rice milling and branding
Challenges such as inconsistent quality, high production costs, and limited irrigation persist. However, value-added milling and packaging have significantly improved the competitiveness of Ghanaian rice in recent years.
Cocoa Farming: Disease Challenges and Sustainability
Cocoa remains Ghana’s most important export crop, but productivity is under constant threat from disease.
Key cocoa disease challenges include:
Black pod disease
Cocoa swollen shoot virus
Vascular-streak dieback
Solutions lie in:
Farm sanitation
Improved disease-tolerant varieties
Pruning and shade management
Early detection and removal of infected trees
Long-term sustainability depends on rejuvenating old farms and strengthening farmer education.
Organic Fertiliser Production: Profitable and Climate-Smart
Soil degradation and rising fertiliser costs have accelerated demand for organic fertilisers.
Organic fertiliser production offers:
Low startup costs
Abundant raw materials
Strong demand from vegetable and greenhouse farmers
Compost, poultry manure processing, and vermicomposting are becoming profitable agribusiness niches while supporting environmental sustainability.
Beekeeping and Honey Production: High Value, Low Land Use
Beekeeping stands out as one of Ghana’s most underutilised agribusiness opportunities.
Advantages include:
Minimal land requirements
Low operational costs
Multiple income streams (honey, beeswax, pollination)
With rising demand for natural honey and cosmetic-grade beeswax, apiculture offers strong opportunities for youth and small-scale entrepreneurs.
Youth Agribusiness and Low-Cost Entry Models
Youth participation is reshaping Ghana’s agribusiness future.
Low-capital agribusiness opportunities include:
Vegetable farming
Snail farming
Egg distribution
Agro-input retail
Farm service provision
These models emphasise skills, discipline, and market access rather than large landholdings.
Agro-Processing: Value Addition as the Profit Engine
Processing is where agribusiness margins expand.
Key processing opportunities include:
Gari and cassava products
Rice milling
Fish smoking
Fruit drying and juice production
Value addition reduces post-harvest losses and improves income stability.
Agro-Exports: Ghana’s Gateway to Global Markets
Ghana’s agro-export sector extends beyond cocoa.
High-potential export products include:
Pineapple, mango, banana
Cashew and shea
Spices and vegetables
Processed foods
Export success depends on quality control, certification, packaging, and logistics. Agro-exports represent Ghana’s strongest pathway to foreign exchange earnings outside minerals.
Challenges Across Ghana’s Agribusiness Value Chain
Despite the opportunities, systemic challenges remain:
Limited access to affordable finance
Climate variability
High input costs
Weak infrastructure
Market volatility
Addressing these challenges requires private investment, policy consistency, and farmer–market linkages.
Technology and the Future of Agribusiness in Ghana
Technology is reshaping agriculture through:
Adoption remains uneven, but technology-driven agribusinesses will dominate the next decade.
The High Street Business Perspective
At The High Street Business, agribusiness is viewed not merely as farming, but as a multi-billion-cedi economic system linking food, trade, technology, employment, and sustainability.
The head of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Election Observation Mission (EOM), Abdoulie Janneh, participated in a briefing session on December 25, 2025 for observers deployed ahead of Guinea’s presidential election scheduled for December 28.
The session, held in the Guinean capital Conakry, brought together 133 short-term observers dispatched by the regional body to monitor the electoral process. Senior ECOWAS officials attended the briefing, including Deputy Head of the EOM Senator Lawan Gana Guba, ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs Ambassador Abdel-Fatau Musah, ECOWAS Resident Representative in Guinea Louis Blaise Aka Brou, and Director of Cabinet to the President of the ECOWAS Commission Abdou Kolley.
The briefing also drew representatives from the ECOWAS Parliament, the ECOWAS Court of Justice, and the Committee of Permanent Representatives of Member States, reflecting the significance attached to the election by the 15-member regional bloc.
Following the session, the ECOWAS delegation paid a courtesy visit to the General Directorate of Elections to evaluate readiness for the poll. Director General of Elections Djenabou Touré Camara assured the delegation that all preparations would be completed ahead of election day on December 28.
Speaking during earlier engagements this week, Janneh emphasized the regional body’s commitment, stating that ECOWAS was there to offer full support and solidarity to Guinea for peaceful, free and transparent presidential elections. He commended Guinean authorities for their commitment to organizing successful elections and their efforts to fully reintegrate into the ECOWAS community.
About 10,000 election observers from ECOWAS, the European Union, the United Nations, the International Organisation of the Francophonie and several other organizations are expected to monitor the vote. The substantial international presence underscores the weight of this electoral moment for Guinea’s political trajectory.
The election marks a crucial milestone for the West African nation as it moves to conclude a transition period that began following the September 2021 military coup led by Colonel Mamady Doumbouya, who deposed then-president Alpha Condé. Doumbouya initially promised to return the country to civilian rule but later declared himself a candidate under a new constitution that permits military leaders to contest for office.
Nine candidates are running in Sunday’s vote, though Doumbouya is widely considered the clear favorite, with key opposition figures barred from participating. Former Prime Minister Cellou Dalein Diallo, once viewed as Doumbouya’s most formidable challenger, was excluded from the race and has since gone into exile.
Guinea’s relationship with ECOWAS has been tested since the 2021 coup. Following the military takeover, ECOWAS suspended Guinea from the bloc’s decision-making bodies while maintaining sustained diplomatic engagement with authorities in Conakry. The regional organization has pressured Doumbouya to present a swift transition timeline, though he missed two deadlines.
Unlike the military rulers in Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso, who left ECOWAS earlier this year to form a rival alliance, Doumbouya has remained engaged with the bloc. The election was formally scheduled for December 28, 2025 by a decree read by Doumbouya on national television on September 27, 2025.
The deployment of ECOWAS observers is being carried out in compliance with the ECOWAS Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, which mandates the Commission to provide technical assistance and observation support to Member States during major electoral exercises.
The 133 short-term observers join a 15-member medium-term technical team that arrived in Conakry on December 18, 2025. The medium-term mission, approved by ECOWAS Commission President Omar Touray and led by Serigne Mamadou Ka, Acting Head of the ECOWAS Electoral Assistance Division, includes specialists in electoral administration, constitutional affairs, conflict prevention, gender mainstreaming, and media monitoring.
About 6.7 million eligible voters are registered for the elections across the resource-rich nation, which holds some of the world’s largest deposits of iron ore and is the leading exporter of bauxite. Polling stations nationwide will open from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on December 28.
The election is being held under a new constitution that extends the presidential mandate from five to seven years. Opposition parties and activists have criticized the vote, describing it as a power grab by Doumbouya to legitimize his continued rule. Campaign activities officially ended at midnight on December 25, two days before the poll.
ECOWAS’ engagement in Guinea’s electoral process reflects the regional body’s broader commitment to supporting member states through democratic transitions and reinforcing confidence in electoral procedures across West Africa.
