The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has alleged that the recent National Security raid on his home was an attempt to frame him.
According to him, credible sources have informed him that the security operatives planned to plant cocaine, marijuana, or gold in his home to falsely implicate him.
He made these claims in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, asserting that the operatives would have succeeded if they had managed to enter his residence.
The raid occurred around 9:00 a.m. on Friday, May 23, 2025, involving about 20 heavily armed police officers who arrived in five vehicles.
Chairman Wontumi recounted that despite being unwell, he had to physically block the officers at the gate as they attempted to force their way into the house.
He criticized the approach taken by the security forces, arguing that even if he were guilty of any wrongdoing, the appropriate step would have been to invite him for questioning.
“I am not someone who is hard to find or would ignore an invitation, so why would they do that? President Mahama should speak to his appointees about how they’re going about their duties,” he said.
Chairman Wontumi also confirmed a statement made by his aide, Oheneba Nana Asiedu, regarding a previous police invitation. He assured that he intends to honour it and will report to the authorities on Monday, May 26, 2025.
The Deputy Minister for Education, Dr. Clement Apaak, has welcomed the Canadian International Development Scholarships team to the Ministry of Education in Accra.
The Canadian Consortium of Colleges and Institutes Canada and Universities Canada, responsible for the implementation and administration of the Canadian International Development Scholarships 2030 (BCDI 2030) program, will be holding its program steering committee meeting in Accra on May 20 and 21.
The Association of African Universities, a strategic partner of this program, will host the event at its secretariat in Accra.
The Canadian International Development Scholarships 2030, which is funded by Global Affairs Canada (GAC), BCDI 2030, aims to strengthen the social and economic development of women and men, particularly women, from eligible Francophonie and Commonwealth countries, as well as other Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
The eight-year, CAD 80 million program aims to strengthen the strategies of 26 eligible partner countries to develop leaders who will influence their communities through knowledge, skills, and attitudes that promote active citizenship.
In his remarks, Dr. Apaak stated that the Canadian International Scholarships 2030 initiative aligns with the 2024 Manifesto of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“I believe that the program, as designed including its thematic areas, project focus, and overall direction is in line with my party’s manifesto. If you review the education section of our manifesto, particularly the parts concerning post-secondary and tertiary education, you’ll see a strong emphasis on STEM,” he said.
He further noted that the current administration is introducing STEM education at the lower levels of the educational system.
“We are placing a high premium on technical and vocational education and training (TVET) because we believe it is key to accelerating our national development and producing the kind of manpower needed in the 21st century. Unemployment is a global issue, and Ghana is no exception,” Dr. Apaak added.
For her part, Julia Scott, Vice President of Member Services at Universities Canada, explained that the Canadian International Development Scholarship program represents 97 universities and all higher education institutions in Canada.
She noted that the organisation also represents the collective voice of college and university presidents across the country.
According to her, the Canadian International Development Scholarship initiative is involved in higher education research and provides a platform for universities to share ideas and manage scholarship programs.
Ms. Scott added that the scholarships cover various fields, including vocational, technical, and technological education, extending up to degree-level studies at Canadian institutions.
The lawyer further noted that unless new footage clearly shows improper conduct — such as the judges and a party to a case sitting and conferring together — the existing clips do not support claims of ethical breaches
Lawyer Kwame Adofo has dismissed allegations of judicial misconduct following the circulation of CCTV footage showing three superior court judges entering Santoku Restaurant in Accra — footage which has fuelled claims of impropriety in a high-profile petition seeking the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

Four new cases of the Monkeypox virus have been confirmed, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the country to nine.
This was disclosed by the Ghana Health Service (GHS), which indicated that the four confirmed cases were recorded as of May 21, 2025.
The Ghana Health Service noted that it is still monitoring the situation to update the public on any new cases that may be detected.
The service, however, indicated that no deaths have been recorded, per the updates shared on May 23, 2025, via the GHS official Facebook page.
Health authorities have consequently assured the public that there is no cause for alarm.
The Ghana Health Service on May 15, 2025, confirmed the first two cases of Monkeypox in Ghana, in the Accra Metropolitan area of the Greater Accra Region.
As of May 18, 2025, two additional cases were confirmed following its detection in the Western and Greater Accra Regions, respectively.
Mpox is a viral disease transmitted through close contact with infected individuals, animals, or contaminated materials. Common symptoms include rash, fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, low energy, and swollen lymph nodes.
The Health Service has advised the public to remain vigilant and observe the following precautions:
Practice regular hand hygiene, avoid close contact with individuals showing symptoms, particularly those with rashes, and report suspected cases to the nearest health facility without delay.

Alfred Ababio Kumi, a youth activist of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former parliamentary aspirant, has been charged with publication of false news following his arrest by operatives of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) on Friday.
Adenta Kumi, as he is widely known, has been accused of making false claims both on his X (formerly Twitter) account and during a radio interview, in connection with a petition he submitted to the President.
He is at the centre of a petition calling for the dissolution of the committee investigating the Chief Justice.
In the petition, Kumi alleges misconduct that he believes could compromise the integrity of the inquiry.
Specifically, he claims that on May 15, 2025, following the committee’s inaugural sitting, Justices Pwamang and Adibu-Asiedu, along with Supreme Court Justice Yonni Kulendi, were seen dining with Thaddeus Sory, counsel for petitioner Daniel Ofori, at Santoku Restaurant in Accra’s Airport Residential Area.
He further alleged that the group was overheard discussing matters related to the petition.
Meanwhile, the NPP has raised concerns over the arrest and detention of Adenta Kumi.
The party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, speaking on Citi Prime News expressed outrage over the handling of Kumi’s arrest.
“Well, certainly we think it is linked to the petition until the NIB comes out with a different reason because that is what we all know—that he has petitioned the President this week and is yet to receive an acknowledgment of it,” he stated.
‘Barbaric and Unlawful’: NPP slams NIB over arrest of Adenta Kumi
In what many are calling a life-restoring breakthrough for maternal health in Ghana, free obstetric fistula surgeries are now being offered across five regional hospitals—signaling a powerful national commitment to restore dignity and hope to thousands of women who have silently suffered the shame and pain of a preventable childbirth injury.
The launch, which coincided with the International Day to End Obstetric Fistula on May 23, was announced by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Country Representative, Dr. Wilfred Ochan, at the Ho Teaching Hospital.
“This year, we are not just talking about fistula—we are healing it, one woman at a time,” he said.
The designated hospitals providing the free surgeries include:
Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (Ashanti)
Ho Teaching Hospital (Volta)
Tamale West Hospital (Northern)
Mercy Women Catholic Hospital (Central)
Upper West Regional Hospital
A Silent Crisis Finally Addressed
Obstetric fistula, a childbirth injury caused by prolonged or obstructed labour, leaves women incontinent, isolated, and often abandoned by their families and communities. Many lose their babies and are forced to live in shame due to the persistent smell of urine or faeces.
“These are not just patients; they are mothers, wives, daughters—left to suffer in silence,” Dr. Ochan said.
Until now, thousands of women in rural and low-income communities have been unable to access surgery due to cost, stigma, and limited availability. The average cost per surgery—including transportation, medical care, and two weeks of post-operative support—is approximately $700, far beyond the reach of most patients.
National Unity Behind a Life-Changing Campaign
The free surgery campaign is spearheaded by the Partnership to End Fistula in Ghana (PEFIC), a growing coalition launched in December 2023 by former First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo. What began with seven partners and $60,000 has now grown into a national movement involving 18 institutional partners.
It is a rare example of successful multi-sectoral collaboration:
Fidelity Bank, Access Bank, and AT (formerly AirtelTigo) are contributing financial and logistical support.
Qatar Charity is building a dedicated shelter for fistula patients in Yendi.
The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection is constructing a state-of-the-art surgical theatre in Tamale.
NGOs like MCAM are leading grassroots awareness campaigns.
The Ghana Health Service is providing facilities and expert personnel.
The World Health Organization (WHO) is ensuring global best practices.
“This is how you change a country—when ministries, hospitals, banks, NGOs, and international partners rally around a single mission: to give women their lives back,” Dr. Ochan declared.
From Stigma to Strength
Behind every surgery is a woman reclaiming her voice. Dr. Ochan emphasized that ending fistula isn’t just about stitching wounds—it’s about mending lives broken by trauma, neglect, and silence.
“These women have been shunned from dinner tables, from beds, from society. Today, Ghana is saying: you matter, and you deserve healing,” he said.
Access Points for Free Surgeries
Women in need of help can now directly contact any of the participating hospitals:
Ho Teaching Hospital (Volta Region) – 027 939 0179
Tamale West Hospital (Northern Region) – 027 701 3270
Mercy Women Catholic Hospital (Central Region) – 027 523 2127
Upper West Regional Hospital – 055 849 6307
Toward a Fistula-Free Ghana by 2030
With 87–88% of births now occurring in health facilities, Ghana has made notable progress in maternal health. Yet, the country continues to grapple with a maternal mortality rate of 310 per 100,000 live births—alongside thousands of debilitating birth complications like fistula.
But the tide is turning.
“Ghana has moved from donor dependence to national ownership of the fight against fistula,” Dr. Ochan said. “This is no longer just an intervention—it is a promise.”
By 2030, Ghana hopes to eliminate obstetric fistula entirely. But for the women who walk into these hospitals with pain and leave with renewed hope, that future has already begun.
Ho (V/R), May 23, GNA – A Ho High Court has sentenced eight individuals for their involvement in the murder in 2020, of Marcus Mawutor Adzahli, the former Assembly Member for the Sogakope South Electoral Area in the Volta Region.
Mr Justice John Ekow Mensah, who presiding over the case, handed a life sentence to Richard Adikyere, a mason, the identified ringleader of the group, and convicted him on charges of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, possession of firearms without lawful authority and robbery.
Adikyere in addition received 47 years for robbery, which runs concurrently after pleading not guilty, but the court found him guilty.
Two of his accomplices, Emmanuel Hedzro and Stephen Adzibolo, were each sentenced to 47 years in prison in hard labour.
Four other accused persons—Obed Ayornu, Michael Sam, Samuel Kofi Zotorvi, and Christian Zotorvi—accepted plea bargains during the trial and were each sentenced to 15-years imprisonment.
This was after they had entered plea deals with the court but pleaded guilty for their complicity in the case.
According to the prosecution, the crime occurred on March 1, 2020, at approximately 0130 hours, when Adikyere and his accomplices forcibly entered Mr. Adzahli’s residence in Sogakope using cement blocks to break down the doors.
Armed with a pump-action shotgun and two pistols—one of which had been stolen in a prior robbery—the assailants shot Mr. Adzahli at close range.
A post-mortem examination conducted at the Sogakope District Hospital confirmed he died from severe gunshot wounds to the head and chest.
The attackers fled the scene after stealing a significant amount of cash.
Investigators later discovered that one of the convicts, Emmanuel Hedzro, used part of the stolen money to purchase a motorbike valued at GH¢4,800.
The suspects were eventually arrested at various locations, including Ashaiman, following a coordinated police investigation.
During interrogation, Adikyere admitted to firing the fatal shots.
Giving judgement, the court said it took into consideration the heinous and barbaric circumstances of the offences by the convicts killing a productive human being.
The court described the evidence presented by the prosecution as overwhelming and conclusive.
Tensions briefly flared after the verdict, as Adikyere, in handcuffs, attempted to attack journalists, who were photographing him outside the courtroom.
Speaking to the press, Geoffrey Adzahli, father of the deceased, described his son’s death as a profound loss, noting that Marcus had been the family’s primary provider.
Despite the emotional toll, he expressed gratitude to the investigative team and the Ghana Police Service for their efforts in securing justice.
“They did an excellent job. This is a victory for justice, and I thank everyone who contributed to this outcome,” he said.
Andrews Dodzi Adugu, a Senior State Attorney praised the verdict and reaffirmed the state’s commitment to upholding the rule of law.
He also urged Ghanaian youth to shun criminal activity and pursue productive endeavors.
Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has accused President John Dramani Mahama of political persecution, claiming his businesses and financial operations have been deliberately targeted since Mahama assumed office.
Speaking after the attempted raid on his house on Friday May 23, Wontumi questioned the fairness of his treatment under the current administration.
“Am I not a Ghanaian anymore? Now that you’ve won the election and become President, does that mean I’m no longer a Ghanaian?” he asked, expressing deep frustration over the alleged suppression.
Chairman Wontumi urged NPP supporters and all Ghanaians to rise against what he perceives as political oppression. “Ghanaians, rise! Arise, Ghanaians! All NPP supporters should rise. It is because of you that Mahama is treating me this way,” he declared, rallying support.
He went on to refute any notion that he held a privileged political or governmental position, emphasising his role as a party chairman dedicated to campaigning for his political party.
“Was I ever a Vice President? Have I ever chaired a board? Have I ever been a CEO? Was I ever a minister?” he questioned.
Wontumi further alleged that Mahama’s administration had intentionally crippled his financial standing.
“You collapsed my business back in 2013. Since you assumed office, you’ve halted all my operations. Even the bank account I rely on has been frozen,” he claimed, suggesting that his economic woes are politically motivated.

Ghanaian Afrobeat singer, Wendy Asiamah Addo, popularly known as Wendy Shay, has revealed that her mother once urged her to quit music due to intense online bullying.
Speaking on a podcast, the ‘Stevie Wonder’ hitmaker shared how the early days of her music career were marred by harsh criticism and trolling on social media.
She noted that the pressure did not only affect her personally but also took a toll on her family, especially her mother, who suggested she return to Germany and leave music behind.
“My mum told me to quit and go back to Germany because it was crazy. It affected everyone in my family. Even some of my relatives were embarrassed to be associated with me at that time,” she said.
Wendy recounted how critics accused her of trying to replace the late Ebony Reigns, with some even altering her images online to mock her appearance.
“My face was literally turned into an old woman on the internet. They laughed at me, said I wasn’t talented. It was brutal. I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy, but in a strange way, it built me,” she reflected.
Despite the backlash, Wendy Shay said she persevered and eventually turned the negativity into motivation.
She then went on to become one of Ghana’s most-streamed female artistes and amassed numerous accolades.
“Even in all that heat, I still had people who loved my music. Every time they ranked the most-streamed female artistes, I was number one. That’s why I kept dropping hits and winning awards. I won about 14 awards in just six months. So, the pressure came with success,” she added.
The suspect, Joshua Arthur allegedly hit the lecturer with a heavy metal, rendering him unconscious
John Quaye, a resident of Gyahadze, a community in Winneba in the Central Region, where the gruesome murder of the Senior Lecturer at the University of Education, Winneba, Prof Mawuadem Koku Amedeker, occurred, has shared details of the unfortunate incident.
In an interview with Accra-based Adom FM on May 23, 2025, Quaye revealed that rumours had circulated about the lecturer’s disappearance, with some speculating that he had been kidnapped.
According to Quaye, this wasn’t surprising, given that the lecturer had been receiving threats from unknown individuals in the community.
However, Quaye stressed in the video that the lecturer is known to be very cautious and circumspect in all his dealings, making the circumstances of his death shocking.
He also noted that the suspect has been identified as an actor popularly known as Fii.
“We heard rumours that he had been kidnapped, which isn’t surprising given that he has been receiving death threats from unknown persons. Recently, we learned that a certain actor allegedly planned to harm him.
“However, Prof is known for being cautious and self-sufficient, making it puzzling how the suspect managed to gain access to his room. Based on the evidence, it appears the suspect used a hard and blunt object to render Prof unconscious before later slashing his throat,” he narrated.
According to John Quaye, the suspect, identified by the police as Joshua Karry Authur, allegedly hit the lecturer with a heavy metal object, slashed his throat and removed his intestines.
He reportedly hid the removed intestines in a location that was difficult to access for unknown reasons.
Quaye also revealed that the police faced significant challenges to gain access to the deceased’s room.
“The suspect allegedly dug a hole and buried him after slashing his throat and removing his intestines, which were hidden elsewhere for unknown reasons. When the police were informed and arrived at the scene to investigate, they reportedly had difficulty navigating the gate, so they broke portions of the entrance, damaging part of the gate in the process to enter the compound,” he added.

Ghana’s preparations for the much-anticipated Unity Cup showdown against Nigeria could be hampered by the absence of several key players due to injuries and club commitments, according to Black Stars Management Committee chairman, Dr. Randy Abbey.
The Black Stars will begin preparations for the four-nation tournament on Sunday, May 25, ahead of their match against long-time rivals Nigeria on May 28 in London.
The Unity Cup also features Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica, forming part of Ghana’s broader build-up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers scheduled for September and October.
However, in an interview with 3Sports, Dr. Abbey revealed that the team may be forced to do without a number of its top talents.
“There are quite a number of players who are injured. There are a few players who are also engaged in qualifying games for Europe, and so their clubs won’t release them. Mind you, this period is outside the FIFA free period,” he said.
He further revealed that in addition to those unavailable due to club commitments, several injured players can’t participate.
“And so, for those whose leagues will still be in session, and they are still in contention, they might not be available, plus the injured players,” he added.
With the match falling outside FIFA’s official international window, clubs are under no obligation to release their players, a challenge that could heavily impact the strength and cohesion of the squad Head Coach Otto Addo is able to assemble for the clash.

Agather Atuhaire, centre, of Uganda receiving the International Women of Courage (IWOC) Award
A Ugandan human rights activist, arrested in Tanzania after travelling to the country to support an opposition politician at a trial for treason, has been tortured and dumped at the border, according to an NGO.
Ugandan rights group Agora Discourse said on Friday that activist and journalist Agather Atuhaire had been “abandoned at the border by Tanzanian authorities” and showed signs of torture.
The statement echoes reports regarding a Kenyan activist detained at the same time and released a day earlier, and supports complaints of a crackdown on democracy across East Africa.
Atuhaire had travelled to Tanzania alongside Kenyan anticorruption campaigner Boniface Mwangi to support opposition leader Tundu Lissu, who appeared in court on Monday.
Both were arrested shortly after the hearing and held incommunicado.
Tanzanian police had initially told local rights groups that the pair would be deported by air. However, Mwangi was discovered on Thursday on a roadside in northern Tanzania near the Kenyan border.
Agora Discourse said it was “relieved to inform the public that Agather has been found”. However, the rights group’s cofounder Jim Spire Ssentongo confirmed to the AFP news agency on Friday that there were “indications of torture”.
‘Worse than dogs’
Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has been accused of increasing authoritarianism, amid rising concerns regarding democracy across East Africa.
Activists travelling to Lissu’s trial accused Tanzania of “collaborating” with Kenya and Uganda in their “total erosion of democratic principles”.
Several high-profile political arrests have highlighted the rights record of Hassan, who plans to seek re-election in October.
The Tanzanian leader has said that her government is committed to respecting human rights. However, she warned earlier this week that foreign activists would not be tolerated in the country as Lissu appeared in court.
“Do not allow ill-mannered individuals from other countries to cross the line here,” Hassan instructed security services.
Several activists from Kenya, including a former justice minister, said they were denied entry to Tanzania as they tried to travel to attend the trial.
Following his return to the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, Mwangi said that he and Atuhaire had suffered a brutal experience.
“We were both treated worse than dogs, chained, blindfolded and underwent a very gruesome torture,” he told reporters.
“The Government of Tanzania cannot hide behind national sovereignty to justify committing serious crimes and human rights violations against its own citizens and other East Africans,” the International Commission of Jurists in Kenya said in a statement.

A senior member of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Lawyer Kwame Jantuah, has strongly refuted claims that President John Dramani Mahama is behind the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Esaaba Torkonoo as reported by ModernGhana.
Jantuah described such assertions as politically charged and misleading, emphasizing that the President’s actions followed constitutional protocols after receiving petitions from private individuals.
This clarification comes amid accusations from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its supporters, who allege that President Mahama is orchestrating the Chief Justice’s ouster through politically motivated petitions.
Speaking on Joy Prime, Jantuah urged the public to distinguish facts from partisan rhetoric, stating, “Who brought the petition? There were individuals. Was it the President? No.”
He further explained that the President’s response aligns with Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution, which sets out the procedures for handling petitions against the Chief Justice, including suspension based on the advice of the Council of State.
Jantuah questioned why the NPP blames the President, asking if ignoring the petitions would have been acceptable.
“If the President had left the petition, did nothing about it, wouldn’t we have blamed him for not taking action?” he remarked. “The Constitution is clear. The President has only followed due process.”
Chief Justice Torkonoo, who has been suspended since April 22, has since initiated legal action seeking to overturn her suspension.
She has also requested an interlocutory injunction against the committee investigating the petitions and called for a public hearing on the matter.
Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Wontumi, has condemned a National Security raid on his residence, describing it as political witch-hunting and unlawful.
Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, the outspoken politician questioned the basis for the raid.
“Was I ever a Vice President? Have I ever chaired a board? Have I ever been a CEO? Was I ever a minister?” he asked. “I am only the chairman of a political party, and it is my duty to campaign for my party. So why are you coming after me?”
The raid reportedly took place around 9:00 a.m. on Friday, May 23, 2025, with about 23 heavily armed police officers arriving in five vehicles.
Wontumi disclosed that he had been invited for questioning by the police on Monday, May 19, but could not honour the invitation due to ill health. He assured the police he would report on Monday, May 26, at 10:00 a.m.
Despite earlier claims that the operatives had an arrest warrant, Wontumi disputed the reports.
“They couldn’t provide any warrant when I asked. What I was told was that they had been asked to bring me to Accra. Over 20 people with five vehicles. I struggled at the gate for over 30 minutes, and they couldn’t get hold of me,” he said.
He called on Ghanaians to speak out against what he described as a growing wave of intimidation targeting political opponents.
The Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has commenced a controlled spillage of excess water from the Weija Dam as a precautionary measure in response to the onset of the rainy season.
In a press statement issued on Friday, May 23, the utility company cautioned residents living downstream of the dam to prepare for potential flooding.
GWL explained that the spillage is essential to safeguard the structural integrity of the dam and to avert any possible disaster.
According to the statement, the current water level at the dam stands at 45 feet, just two feet below the maximum safe operating limit of 47 feet. With water levels continuing to rise, GWL urged residents in vulnerable areas to evacuate in order to avoid a repeat of previous flood incidents.
“The Management of GWL is by this release sounding a word of caution to inhabitants downstream to evacuate the area to forestall any eventuality,” the statement said.
“Additionally, the Ga West Municipal Assembly has been advised to desilt the estuary to facilitate the smooth flow of excess water into the sea and to clear accumulated refuse along the course of the river.”
GWL further stressed the importance of following guidance from disaster management authorities: “Residents downstream must heed all warnings from NADMO and other agencies mandated to manage disasters.”
Communities at risk of flooding include Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach, Adakope, and surrounding areas.
GWL concluded by calling for public cooperation to prevent a recurrence of past disasters and to protect lives and property.
The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has accused President John Dramani Mahama’s administration of unfair treatment and political persecution.
This follows an attempted raid on his house by officers from the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) and the Ghana Police Service on Friday, May 23, 2025.
Speaking on Asempa FM on Friday, May 23, Chairman Wontumi called on NPP supporters and Ghanaians to rise against what he describes as deliberate suppression.
“Am I not a Ghanaian anymore? Now that you’ve won the election and become President, does that mean I’m no longer a Ghanaian?” Wontumi questioned, expressing frustration over the government’s alleged targeting of his businesses and personal assets.
Addressing party supporters, he rallied them to stand firm. “Ghanaians, rise! Arise, Ghanaians! All NPP supporters should rise. It is because of you that Mahama is treating me this way,” he declared.
Wontumi dismissed any suggestion that he held a privileged political or governmental position, emphasising that he was merely a party chairman fulfilling his duty to campaign for the NPP.
“Was I ever a Vice President? Have I ever chaired a board? Have I ever been a CEO? Was I ever a minister?” he asked rhetorically, reinforcing his claim that his persecution is unwarranted.
He further alleged economic sabotage against him by the Mahama-led administration, accusing the government of crippling his businesses.
“You collapsed my business back in 2013. Since you assumed office, you’ve halted all my operations. Even the bank account I rely on has been frozen,” he lamented.

‘Barbaric and Unlawful’: NPP slams NIB over arrest of Adenta Kumi
The Youth Wing of the People’s National Party (PNP) has condemed the arrest of Mr Alfred Ababio Kumi, popularly known as Adenta Kumi, a former parliamentary candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the Adenta Constituency in the Greater Accra Region.
In a statement released by the PNP’s National Youth Organiser, Muniru Muhammed, the arrest, allegedly executed by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) during a dawn raid—was described as a troubling development that undermines democratic engagement, particularly among Ghana’s youth.
“This arrest sends a worrying signal to the youth of Ghana who are increasingly finding their voices and speaking out against injustice, corruption, and the misuse of public office,” Muniru said.
Mr Muhammed asserted that such acts not only intimidate but could also suppress a generation that must be encouraged, not silenced, for holding public institutions to account.
He emphasised that Ghana’s progress hinges on the full participation of its young people in governance and national development. “Ghana needs jobs, opportunities, and hope for its youth, not fear, intimidation, and arbitrary arrests,” he said.

The Youth Wing of the PNP has called for Mr Kumi’s immediate release should it be established that due process was not followed, demanding full transparency from the NIB concerning the basis for the arrest.
“All state institutions must operate within the confines of the law and uphold the rights and dignity of every citizen,” Mr Muhammed insisted.
Reaffirming the PNP’s commitment to democratic freedoms, the Youth Organiser said that the party remains resolute in defending the rights of young Ghanaians and ensuring the country continues to shine as a beacon of democracy on the African continent.

‘Please help me’ – Wontumi cries on live radio as national security officers storm his residence (video)
Ashanti Regional Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako popularly known as Chairman Wontumi has made an emotional appeal to Ghanaians, particularly NPP supporters, to speak out against what he describes as politically motivated persecution.
Clement Opoku Gyamfi, the lawyer for Alfred Ababio Kumi, also known as Adenta Kumi, has stated that his client has been charged with publication of false news by the National Investigations Bureau (NIB).
His lawyer confirmed this on Asempa FM’s ‘Eko Sii Sen’ programme on Friday, May 23.
Mr Kumi was arrested by NIB operatives on Friday, an arrest the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially condemned and accused the NDC government of intimidating opposition elements.
According to the lawyer, his client was interrogated by NIB officials in his presence and that his arrest has to do with some comments he made in media interviews and on his X account, as well as a petition he reportedly forwarded to the presidency regarding the committee set up to probe the possible removal of the Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkonoo.
The lawyer confirmed that his client’s caution statement has been taken, while he has also officially put in a bail application awaiting response from the NIB.
He says he expects that his client would be granted bail since the matter at stake warrants a bail and is merely a misdemeanor.
The arrest of Mr Kumi comes shortly after he submitted a petition to President John Mahama, calling for the dissolution of a committee investigating the removal of the Chief Justice.
Kumi, a former New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary aspirant in Adentan, alleged misconduct on the part of the committee members that, he claimed, could compromise the credibility of their inquiry.
In his petition, Kumi accused Justices Pwamang, Adibu-Asiedu, and Supreme Court Justice Yonni Kulendi of meeting with Thaddeus Sory—legal counsel for the petitioner Daniel Ofori—at Santoku Restaurant in Accra’s Airport Residential Area after the committee’s first hearing on May 15, 2025.
Kumi claims the judges were overheard discussing issues related to the petition during the dinner.
A video of the supposed meeting has since gone viral online with many questioning the credibility of the content.

Dancehall musician Samini (L) and deputy CEO of GTA Abieku Santana (R)
Some netizens, particularly grassroots members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), have called on the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) to withdraw any partnership with dancehall artiste Samini, citing his public support for the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
On May 22, 2025, Samini shared photos on his X page with Abeiku Santana and other GTA officials, captioned with the hashtags #TheHomecoming and #SafariFest.
Chancing on the post, several netizens have taken to social media to express displeasure, calling on the GTA Deputy CEO, Abeiku Santana, to cancel any collaboration with Samini.
They argued that the artiste had openly campaigned against the NDC during the 2024 general elections, hence does not merit any support now that they are in power.
Critics referenced a campaign song Samini released in support of the NPP, in which he allegedly claimed that former President John Dramani Mahama was unfit to return to office.
Some even compared the situation to the NDC’s decision to exclude Stonebwoy from the party’s “Ghana Victory Concert,” suggesting that similar action should be taken against Samini.
“Hello @AbeikuSantana, the Samini you’re entertaining once described Mahama as incompetent, lazy, and allergic to good governance, even before the elections. Drop that partnership now,” one X user posted.
Read the post below:
It’s a pity to see you go for a partnership. I thought the NPP had milked your account enough to not seek partnership with anything NDC.
Maybe next time, have foresight to see how the optics would play out.
Okay so stonebwoy never openly supported the npp but was not allowed to perform at an ndc event and Samini who openly supported the npp and campaigned for them get gigs as big as this ? Wow
🚨Hello @AbeikuSantana, the samini that you are entertaining, described Mahama as incompetent, Lazy, and allergic to good governance even before elections
The Member of Parliament for Ketu North, Eric Edem Agbana
The Member of Parliament for Ketu North, Eric Edem Agbana, has expressed his disapproval of calls for the disclosure of medical conditions of government officials.
He argued that such information should only be disclosed if it directly affects their ability to perform official duties.
Agbana stated that while transparency in governance is important, there must be a clear distinction between private and public matters.
“I do not subscribe to the proposition that the health conditions of government officials should automatically be made public. Unless it has a direct impact on the discharge of their duties, their medical status should remain a private matter,” he said.
Speaking on Metro TV’S Good Morning Ghana on May 23, 2025, he stressed the need for public officials to prioritise their personal health to ensure they can effectively serve the people of Ghana.
“You must be in good health to deliver on your mandate. That is why officials should take their health seriously,” he added.
Agbana also called for significant investments in Ghana’s healthcare system, urging authorities to upgrade health facilities to better serve Ghanaians.
“Our citizens deserve quality healthcare, and we must ensure our facilities meet high standards,” he said.

play videoAbdul Aziz Issah is a player of Barcelona Athletic
Abdul Aziz Issah arrived in the city of Barcelona with quiet promise. A silky, intelligent midfielder with leadership in his veins, he stepped into the famed La Masia corridors in September 2024 with hopes as bright as the Catalan sun.
He wasn’t alone. Alongside him was fellow countryman David Oduro, who inked a permanent deal until 2027. For Issah, the story was different, a loan move from Dreams FC, a foot in the door of European football’s elite.
In the 2023/24 season, the attacking midfielder was one of the breakout performers in the CAF Confederation Cup, playing for Dreams FC.
At just 18, he was central to the club’s historic run to the semi-finals, contributing four goals and two assists in ten matches.
His most iconic moment? A long-range goal from the center circle against Lobito, a strike so stunning it was shortlisted for CAF Goal of the Year 2024.
His consistency and flair didn’t go unnoticed, earning him nominations for Young Player of the Year, Interclub Player of the Year, and Goal of the Year at the 2024 CAF Awards. Recognition that ultimately prompted Barcelona to make a move for him.
In September 2024, Issah completed a dream move to Barcelona Atlètic, the B team of the Spanish giants, a calculated test of his potential at a higher level.
Under newly appointed manager Hansi-Dieter Flick, Issah was invited to train with the first team. Expectations were high.
Issah had proven himself in African club football and was now entering European development, a natural next step. But that step never materialised.
Issah featured for only 16 minutes against Real Sociedad B and another 10 minutes against Nàstic. After that, he disappeared from selection completely.
Neither Albert Sanchez nor Sergi Milla, coaches of Barcelona Atlètic, called on him again, not even when the squad lacked numbers.
There were no injury updates, no formal disciplinary issues. He simply vanished from the football radar, an unused talent on a team that had once welcomed him with open arms.
In April 2025, he rejoined the Ghana U-20s for the Africa Cup of Nations as the team sought qualification for the 2025 U-20 World Cup. He won the Man of the Match in a group-stage win over the Central African Republic.
Ghana were eliminated in the quarter finals against Egypt, but he showed glimpses of the form that convinced Barcelona to sign him. But upon returning to Spain, nothing changed; he remained sidelined and didn’t feature again.
Now, as the season ends, Issah will leave Barcelona Atlètic without the club triggering the purchase option.
They may assist him in finding another opportunity in Europe, but the experience at Barcelona, from arrival to exit, feels like a chapter that was never written.
For a player whose performance at Dreams FC earned him continental recognition and a ticket to Spain, his time at Barcelona has been defined by silence.

Ghanaian artiste Gyakie has opened up about the altercation involving her manager, Electro Mirror, and security personnel at the 2023 AfroNation festival in Portugal.
Speaking to Doreen Avio on on Friday, May 23, 2025, she described the incident as one she finds difficult to revisit due to the unpleasant memories it evokes.
“I really wish I was able to answer this particular question at the time, because it’s like anytime I have to talk about it, it kind of opens wounds that have already been healed,” she said.
She added, “What happened, and the fact that I actually had a performance on that day, is not something I would wish on anyone. I had to prepare for the stage, and I had to experience all that happened.”
The hitmaker said the incident triggered a flurry of calls. “It made me see things differently,” she noted.
Gyakie further advised that the entertainment business comes with challenges, urging industry players to exercise more caution in how they navigate it.
In June 2023, a video that went viral on social media showed Gyakie’s manager, Electro Mirror, being manhandled by some uniformed security personnel, to the horror of onlookers.
The video, shared by George Britton, featured George’s panicked voice in the background as he reproached the security officers for their actions.
Mirror was seen pinned to the floor while about five security men held him in a chokehold as he gasped for air.
Meanwhile, Gyakie is preparing to release her debut album after previously dropping two EPs. She has already released the first single titled , off the upcoming album .
The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has sharply criticised the arrest of Alfred Ababio Kumi—popularly known as Adenta Kumi—calling the incident a “disgrace” to the rule of law and a “shame” to the nation.
Mr Kodua said he received a distress call from Mr Kumi in the early hours of Friday, alerting him that around 20 armed men had besieged his residence in Adenta, demanding that he come outside. According to Mr Kumi, who was speaking from inside his house, the men did not identify themselves.
“On my way to his residence, I received another call—this time from his wife—saying he had been taken away and that they told her he was being sent to an office,” Kodua recounted in an interview with Joy News. By the time he arrived at the property, Kumi had already been removed.
The NPP General Secretary expressed outrage at the state in which he found the home. He described the front door as having been destroyed and alleged that a woman in the house had been assaulted with the butt of a rifle.
“It’s appalling that officers, whoever they may be, would act in this manner. What crime has Adenta Kumi committed?” Kodua asked. “This is someone who, acting as a responsible citizen, submitted a petition to the President after observing what he believed to be wrongdoing. He never received a response—only to be forcibly picked up without explanation.”
He condemned the arrest as an act of intimidation, criticising the absence of due process. “Are they trying to put fear into him? Are they trying to intimidate him? If someone has filed a petition, the right course of action is to invite them—not to storm their home without a warrant.”
Mr Kumi’s location was still unknown as of Friday morning, but Kodua confirmed that they had noted the registration number of the vehicle involved—WE 323-11—and had taken photographs of some of the individuals who participated in the arrest. “We are now on our way to the National Security office to confirm whether he is being held there,” he added.
The arrest comes days after Mr Kumi submitted a petition to President John Dramani Mahama calling for the dissolution of a committee investigating the potential removal of the Chief Justice.
In his petition, Kumi accused Justices Pwamang, Adibu-Asiedu, and Supreme Court Justice Yonni Kulendi of holding an inappropriate meeting with Thaddeus Sory, legal counsel for petitioner Daniel Ofori, at Santoku Restaurant in Accra after the committee’s first hearing on 15 May 2025.
Kumi claimed that issues relating to the petition were discussed during the dinner, a meeting he says compromises the credibility of the committee’s work. A video of the alleged gathering has since gone viral, sparking public debate over its authenticity and implications.
Kumasi, May 23, GNA – Supporters of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Kumasi have strongly criticised the government over what they described as targeted harassment of the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Mr. Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
The supporters alleged that since the National Democratic Congress (NDC) assumed office on January 7, 2025, Mr. Boasiako has faced a pattern of politically motivated intimidation.
They claim that such actions undermine democratic principles and are calling on President John Mahama to intervene and ensure the rule of law is upheld.
Their comments follow a raid by National Security operatives on Mr. Boasiako’s private residence at Paraku Estate in Kumasi in the early hours of Friday.
The incident drew a large crowd of NPP supporters, leading to a tense standoff between them and the security personnel, which was defused after the intervention of senior party officials.
According to sources close to Mr. Boasiako, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service had officially invited him to report for questioning on May 21.
However, the Regional Chairman responded in writing, requesting a rescheduled appearance for Monday, May 25 on health grounds.
Despite this, National Security officers proceeded to his residence this morning, days before the agreed date.
The NPP supporters insist that if the government had legitimate concerns or charges against Mr. Boasiako or any other party member, it must pursue the matter through appropriate legal channels.
They warned against the use of force or intimidation to silence dissent, stressing that such conduct poses a threat to the nation’s democratic dispensation.

The Interior Ministry called for peaceful coexistence between asylum seekers, particularly those fleeing instability in Burkina Faso, and their host communities in Ghana.
This appeal was made during the launch of the Border Project by World Vision Ghana, an initiative aimed at supporting communities in the Upper East and Upper West regions that are accommodating these displaced persons.
Deputy Minister for the Interior, Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi, affirmed that the government has reinforced early warning security systems to safeguard the country’s borders and maintain national security.
“We are committed to ensuring that early mechanisms are strengthened and that our border communities remain secure and that the human rights and dignity of all persons, including asylum are upheld,” he stated.
Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Education, Dr. Clement Apaak, has pledged to streamline local education interventions aimed at improving learning outcomes within host communities.
“Many children, especially those in refugee and host communities, face severe barriers. These include inadequate infrastructure, lack of water and sanitation facilities, food insecurity and in some cases, instability that disrupts learning and attendance.
“Ghana’s Ministry of Education stands ready to collaborate with World Vision and its partners to ensure that the gains of this project translate into improved learning outcomes,” he said.

Bibiani (WN/R), May 23, GNA – The Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipal Assembly has begun desilting storm drains in some parts of the municipality to prevent incidents of floods during the peak of the rains.
Mr Sebastian Obeng, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), explained to the Ghana News Agency during the exercise that part of the municipality, particularly Bibiani, sometimes experienced issues of flooding anytime it rained heavily.
He expressed worry that flooding had become an annual ritual in some areas, partly due to the poor drainage system which submerge houses and caused extensive damage to properties.
The MCE stated: “We are making all efforts as an Assembly to ensure our Municipality is ready to receive any impending rain and to also not cause too much havoc.”
Mr Obeng advised the people to refrain from dumping refuse into gutters in and around their residence to prevent flooding during heavy rainfall.
Ghana’s local currency, the cedi, continues its upward momentum on the interbank market, registering notable gains against major trading currencies, particularly the US dollar.
According to Bloomberg data sighted by GhanaWeb Business on Friday May 23, 2025, the cedi is currently selling at GH¢10.83 to the dollar on the interbank market as of 12:25 GMT, an appreciation that reflects growing market confidence in Ghana’s recent economic reforms and improved foreign exchange management.
This marks the first time in two years that the local currency has traded below GH¢11 to the dollar.
The Bank of Ghana, in its daily interbank FX update, reported the cedi trading at a buying price of GH¢11.62 and a selling price of GH¢11.63 to the dollar.
This development represents a continued narrowing of the spread between buying and selling prices, suggesting greater stability in forex markets.
The local currency is also firming up against the British pound and the Euro. The pound is being bought at GH¢15.60 and sold at GH¢15.62, while the Euro is trading at GH¢13.11 (buying) and GH¢13.12 (selling).
On the retail market, where rates tend to be higher due to overhead costs and margins, GhanaWeb Business checks as of 9:00 AM on May 23, 2025, revealed that the cedi is exchanging at GH¢12.50 to the dollar at some forex bureaus.
Additionally, the pound is being sold at GH¢17.20, while the Euro is going for GH¢14.50.
Meanwhile, the continued appreciation of the cedi is being viewed as a positive sign by market watchers, especially in light of last year’s volatility, when the currency depreciated to nearly GH¢17 to the dollar.
With inflationary pressures easing and investor confidence on the rise, the currency’s performance is seen as a critical indicator of Ghana’s ongoing economic recovery.
Ghanaian singer Gyakie has opened up for the first time about the traumatic incident involving her manager, Electro Mirror, during the AfroNation Portugal festival in June 2023.
In an interview on Hitz FM on May 23, 2025, she described the experience as deeply distressing, revealing that it left lasting emotional scars.
The incident occurred when Mirror was involved in a confrontation with security personnel at the festival.
A video that circulated online showed him being pinned down and restrained by multiple guards, prompting widespread concern and outrage.
Mirror was subsequently taken to the hospital and later reported to be in stable condition.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Gyakie said, “Anytime I have to talk about it, it kind of opens wounds that have already been healed. The only thing I’ll probably say is God is real, because what happened and the fact that I actually had a performance that day is not something I would wish on anyone, because I had to also prepare for stage and I had to experience all that.”
She added that the incident made her realize the unpredictable nature of the music industry, where “anything can just go wrong.”
“I think that’s the first negative thing that has happened in my career. It made me see things differently. That this job that we’re doing, we really have to walk like we’re on needles. We have to be very careful because anything can just go wrong in a flash and everything can crumble. But again, I just thank God that we were able to come through that victorious,” she said.
Despite the challenges, Gyakie expressed gratitude for overcoming the incident, stating, ” I would say it’s one of those things that the devil kind of puts in your way, and you have to make sure you jump over it. It is either you jump over it or you fall into that trap. But I’m very happy that we’ve been able to pass that trap. And we’re here in 2025 dropping bangers and about to drop a big album.”
The AfroNation Portugal festival, held from June 28 to 30, 2023, featured performances by several Ghanaian artistes, including Gyakie, Black Sherif, and Camidoh.
Kwasi Asante was appointed as Director of Passports in December 2024
The High Court in Accra, which issued an arrest warrant for the Director of Passports, Kwasi Asante, over the issuance of multiple passports to a suspect who was being prosecuted, has withdrawn the warrant.
This is according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday, May 22, 2025.
The ministry stated that Kwasi Asante has been cleared of any wrongdoing in relation to the matter.
It was earlier reported by GhanaWeb and other media platforms that the individual who is accused of acquiring multiple passports, one Dominic Williams, acquired his last passport way before Asante was appointed as the Director of Passports.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to inform the general public that the High Court has formally withdrawn the arrest warrant previously issued against the Director of Passports in relation to the alleged issuance of multiple passports to an individual identified as Mr Dominic Williams.
“The Ministry wishes to confirm that the matter has been fully resolved and that the Director of Passports has been cleared of any wrongdoing. It is important to emphasised that the incident in question predates the Director’s assumption of office on 19th August 2024,” parts of the statement read.
“Records available to the Ministry show that Mr Dominic Williams acquired his first Ghanaian passport over twelve (12) years ago, with his most recent passport issued on 16th January 2024 – a full eight (8) months before the current Director assumed leadership of the Passport Office,” it added.
The ministry has expressed appreciation to the court for the professional manner it handled the issue.
Background:
The High Court in Accra issued a bench warrant for the arrest of the Director of Passports on Friday, May 16, 2025, in relation to a case it was hearing.
According to court documents sighted by GhanaWeb, although the accused person had been discharged following the withdrawal of the case by the Attorney-General, the presiding judge still requested that the Director of Passports appear before the court to explain how a single individual was issued more than eight passports.
The documents indicated that the bench warrant was issued during court proceedings on Friday, May 16, 2025, after the director failed to honour the court’s directive.
The documents further indicated that although Asante had been duly served, he had failed to appear before the court.
Kwasi Asante was appointed Director of Passports by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in December 2024.

On May 22, 2025, Assafuah took to Facebook to share details of Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang’s journey, including the aircraft’s origin, schedule, and duration.
He claimed that the flight, operated by VistaJet 836, took off from Farnborough in the UK and landed in Accra later that day.

“Let the NPP that suffered the most humiliating defeat in recent memory in both the Presidential and Parliamentary elections know this: Akufo-Addo’s administration rundown the Presidential jet. Among others, its fuel tank is even corroded,” he said.
Dr. Boamah explained that the aircraft has since been taken abroad for comprehensive maintenance and is currently out of service.
He indicated that the repair work is extensive and may take up to three months before the plane is ready for any official assignments.
The Vice President returned to Ghana after a period of medical leave in the UK.
Her arrival was marked by a warm reception at the airport, led by President John Dramani Mahama and First Lady Lordina Mahama.

Upon clearing the sand, a body believed to be that of the missing lecturer was found buried. The body was recovered and deposited at the morgue for preservation and autopsy,” the statement read.
A suspect, Joshua Karry Arthur, is currently in police custody, assisting with the investigation, and will be arraigned before the court.

Ghanaian singer and songwriter Gyakie has returned with a stirring new single, “Sankofa,” a reflective and emotionally charged track that sets the tone for her highly anticipated debut album, After Midnight.
Co-written with longtime collaborator Eyram Gbewonyo (Afrolektra), the single delves into themes of reconnection, closure, and emotional honesty, signaling a new chapter in Gyakie’s artistic evolution.
Rooted in the profound Ghanaian adinkra symbol “Sankofa” — which translates to “go back and retrieve what has been lost” — the track explores the power of introspection. With its stripped-down production and raw, expressive delivery, Gyakie opens a deeply personal window into her soul, inviting listeners to pause, reflect, and reconnect with their own emotional truths.
“Sankofa” marks the beginning of what Gyakie describes as her most vulnerable and inward-looking work yet. It also serves as a prelude to After Midnight, a debut album shaped by solitude, reflection, and the quiet magic of nighttime creativity.
“Almost all the songs on the album were recorded after midnight,” Gyakie reveals. “It’s within those hours that I find my best inspiration to write. The peace and quiet, the sounds from the birds, the serenity — everything about that time fuels my creativity.”
Beyond the music, After Midnight is also a reflection of Gyakie’s emotional journey. She candidly shares moments of grief, solitude, and healing, noting: “I’ve done a lot of crying after midnight too. When I’m in my down moments, I schedule my tears for when I get home from work, then I let it all out.”
The album draws on childhood memories as well, particularly a nightly family ritual of her mother praying for her and her siblings after midnight — a tradition that continues today. “That time of the night holds so much meaning for me,” she adds.
With this album, Gyakie not only opens up emotionally but also pushes musical boundaries. Known for her seamless blend of Afro-fusion, R&B, hip-hop, and highlife, she continues to redefine the soundscape of contemporary African music. Her previous EPs — SEED (2021), which featured the breakout hit Forever, and MY DIARY (2022), which included a collaboration with Nigerian superstar Davido — marked her as a rising force in global music.
Her momentum hasn’t gone unnoticed. In 2025, Gyakie was a featured speaker at the prestigious Forbes Summit, where she offered insights into her genre-blending artistry and global ambitions.
As After Midnight approaches, Gyakie invites fans into a world where silence speaks, vulnerability thrives, and music becomes a mirror to the soul. For those ready to listen, she suggests pressing play at 12:01 AM — the hour when honesty flows most freely.
Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has accused the John Mahama-led administration of political witch-hunting and economic sabotage following a search conducted at his residence by a combined team of police and National Security operatives.
The operatives, armed with a search warrant sighted by JoyNews, stormed his premises to conduct what they described as a lawful operation.
But speaking to journalists after the incident, Chairman Wontumi decried what he believes is a targeted attack rooted in politics. “Am I not a Ghanaian anymore? Now that you’ve won the election and become President, does that mean I’m no longer a Ghanaian?” he questioned, directing his frustration at President Mahama.
He called on NPP supporters and concerned Ghanaians to speak out against what he described as abuse of power. “Ghanaians, rise! Arise, Ghanaians! All NPP supporters should rise. It is because of you that Mahama is treating me this way.”

Chairman Wontumi, known for his fiery political rhetoric, defended his role in national politics and questioned the justification for the government’s actions.
“Was I ever a Vice President? Have I ever chaired a board? Have I ever been a CEO? Was I ever a minister?” he asked. “I am only the chairman of a political party, and it is my duty to campaign for my party.”
He went on to accuse the Mahama administration of deliberately collapsing his businesses and freezing his bank accounts.
“You collapsed my business back in 2013. Since you assumed office, you’ve halted all my operations. Even the bank account I rely on has been frozen,” he alleged.
Chairman Wontumi’s comments have sparked fresh political debate about the use of state power and the treatment of opposition figures under the current administration.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has issued a strong condemnation of what it describes as politically motivated intimidation and harassment of its members by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, through the alleged misuse of state security institutions.
In a press release issued on Friday, May 23, the NPP called for an immediate end to these actions, labeling them a direct attack on Ghana’s democracy and the rule of law.
Arrest of Adenta Kumi Sparks Outrage
On the morning of Friday, May 23, 2025, heavily armed operatives, believed to be from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), reportedly stormed the residence of Alfred Ababio Kumi, popularly known as “Adenta Kumi.”
According to the NPP, six masked officers wielding AK-47 rifles forcibly arrested him in a manner they described as “Rambo-style intimidation.”
Kumi, a known party activist, had recently petitioned President John Dramani Mahama to dissolve the committee investigating petitions related to the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. His petition cited alleged misconduct within the investigative body.
The NPP claims his sudden arrest is an attempt to silence him and obstruct justice.
“The response of the state should have been to address the concerns raised in the petition through due process, not through intimidation and force,” the party stated. “This is a clear affront to democratic accountability.”
Raid on Chairman Wontumi’s Residence
The NPP also raised concerns over the alleged harassment of Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi.
Armed men reportedly stormed his residence despite prior communication between him and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
The chairman had previously informed authorities of his inability to appear for questioning due to medical reasons but assured them of his availability on May 26, 2025. The party labeled the raid as “nothing short of political harassment.”
Calls for Public Action
The NPP has called on Ghanaians, civil society organizations, and democratic institutions to condemn what it perceives as a deliberate attempt to weaken opposition voices and undermine the nation’s democratic values.
“These actions violate the fundamental rights of citizens and threaten transparency, justice, and equal protection under the law. We urge all defenders of democracy to speak out against this political persecution,” the statement concluded.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, has revealed the severe difficulties he is facing after his bank accounts were frozen as reported by ModernGhana.
The Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) took this action in April following allegations that his company, Akonta Mining, was involved in illegal mining in the Tano Nimiri Forest.
Wontumi disclosed that the freeze on his accounts has left him struggling to meet basic needs, including feeding himself and paying his children’s school fees.
Speaking on his radio station, he questioned the basis of the government’s actions, saying, “What state money came to me that justifies this harassment?”
He claims that the freeze and ongoing pressure are politically motivated, targeting him unfairly despite not holding any government office in the previous NPP administration.
“I have never been a Vice President, a Minister, a CEO, or a board member of any state institution. I was only a Chairman with the mandate to campaign for my party,” he explained.
Chairman Wontumi also highlighted that his business was affected back in 2013 but maintained his loyalty when the NPP came to power.
He now feels victimized by the current government, led by President John Dramani Mahama, stating that even with a change in administration in 2025, the targeting of his companies continues.
Recently, a team of police and security personnel surrounded his residence, demanding access, which he viewed as further intimidation.
He called on Ghanaians and NPP supporters to stand strong, asserting that the government’s actions are politically driven and aimed at punishing party members.
