The State Housing Company Limited (SHCL) has officially handed over a newly-completed four-storey, 24-unit apartment complex to the Ghana Immigration Service at Savelugu in the Northern Region.
The facility, commissioned by the Minister of the Interior, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, is a major milestone in SHCL’s ongoing commitment to support national security through sustainable and dignified housing.
This project, initiated in 2016 under an agreement between SHCL and the Ghana Immigration Service, was designed to provide modern residential accommodation for junior-ranked officers stationed at the Tamale International Airport and within the northern security corridor.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Muntaka commended SHCL for delivering a high-quality facility that does not only meet housing needs, but also enhances the morale and welfare of security personnel.
He emphasised the government’s belief of providing secure and comfortable housing for officers, which is geared towards enabling them to serve the nation more efficiently and with greater dedication.
Speaking at the event, the Acting Comptroller-General of the Immigration Service, Samuel Basintale Amadu, expressed appreciation to government and the State Housing Company for the much-needed intervention.
He highlighted the severe accommodation challenges faced by the Service in the region and noted that this project brings welcome relief to officers and their families.
Managing Director of State Housing Company Limited, John Bawah, reaffirmed SHCL’s dedication to delivering affordable and durable housing solutions across the country, especially for frontline workers and essential service personnel.
This project, according to the MD, stands as a testament to SHCL’s capacity to execute quality government-led housing interventions that promote national development.
In a further demonstration of the government’s housing agenda, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka also performed a sod-cutting ceremony for a new 24-unit housing complex.
The second project is targeting senior officers of the Ghana Immigration Service, which will also be built at the same location.
SHCL has also been tasked to execute this second phase, which will include added amenities to serve the unique needs of senior staff.

The Ghana Audit Service has refuted claims made by the University of Ghana chapter of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG-UG) regarding a recent audit report, defending the integrity of their findings.
The response addresses UTAG-UG’s press conference held on May 20, where the union disputed the audit report’s claim that the University of Ghana overstated employee compensation by GH¢59.2 million between 2022 and 2024.
The Audit Service maintains that their audits are conducted according to international standards and applicable laws, and their reports aim to help institutions correct financial deviations, not malign their reputation.
According to a statement issued by the Audit Service, the publication and subsequent statements by UTAG-UG misrepresented the contents of a recent Special Audit Report titled “Recoveries Made from Disallowed Expenditure in the Auditor-General’s Reports from 2020–2023 and Payroll Savings as at 31st December 2024.”
The report, the Service clarified, was not meant to accuse the university of financial misconduct but rather to highlight recoveries and savings made through routine verification processes.
“The public should disregard such calls by UTAG-UG. Our audits are conducted in accordance with internationally recognized standards, including the International Standards for Supreme Audit Institutions (ISSAIs), and applicable laws such as the 1992 Constitution, the Public Financial Management Act (2016), and the Audit Service Act (2000),” part of the statement read.

The Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev John Ntim Fordjour, has urged the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, to resign from his position as Minister for Foreign Affairs, in line with a vow he made to resign immediately should his government engage a private jet for use by the President or Vice President.
Ablakwa, who while in opposition led a campaign to expose President Akufo-Addo’s global travels aboard private jets, vowed in 2022 that he would resign from government if an NDC President or Vice President ever used a private jet.
“I will resign from government if we come to power and our leader patronizes a private jet. I will resign. Why should I stay there? What I do is based on principle. It is not personal. It’s not that I hate President Akufo-Addo or love him — that’s not the point. It’s about the principle, about protecting the public purse. …I will resign; I once resigned from the Appointments Committee,” Ablakwa said during a radio interview.
Rev. Ntim Fordjour, who is the Ranking Member on the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament, stated in a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that politics must not degenerate into populist stunts. He said that while in opposition, Ablakwa ridiculed the Presidency, publicized presidential travels involving private jets, and demonized the practice, which earned him applause from his party supporters.
He added that the Foreign Affairs Minister, caught up in the excitement of opposition politics, may have forgotten that exigencies could require the President or Vice President to use private jets from time to time in the course of their legitimate official duties.
Rev Ntim Fordjour urged the Minister to do the honourable thing and resign to demonstrate that he is a principled politician.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially ended its broadcast partnership with StarTimes following the expiration of their agreement at the end of the 2023/24 football season.
Talks to renew the contract, which had been ongoing since the season’s conclusion, have broken down, with both parties unable to reach a consensus on new terms. The GFA confirmed that all negotiations were brought to a close in March 2025.
StarTimes, a Chinese pay-TV broadcaster, entered the Ghanaian market in 2016 and became the GFA’s official broadcast partner in 2017. Over the years, the partnership provided coverage for the Ghana Premier League and other domestic competitions.
However, the end of the deal has also revealed financial disagreements. The GFA is now seeking to recover an outstanding debt of USD 842,173.36, which it claims StarTimes owes under the previous agreement. Legal counsel has been retained, and formal proceedings have begun to reclaim the sum.
In a statement, the GFA said it remains committed to finding a new media partner that can offer a fair, transparent, and beneficial arrangement that serves the interests of clubs, fans, and the broader football community.
The Audit Service has dismissed suggestions of tarnishing the image of the University of Ghana (UG), insisting that it delivered a professional assessment of the books of Ghana’s premier tertiary institution, cited for overstating employee compensation by GH¢59.2 million.
The response from the Audit Service, mandated by law to audit public institutions, therefore, upholds a news article published by MyJoyOnline from the same report, which did not go down well with the University of Ghana Chapter of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG-UG), despite clarifications by UG’s acting Deputy Internal Auditor, Prof. Samuel Simpson, captured in subsequent publications.
In a detailed press release on Friday, May 23, the Ghana Audit Service addressed concerns raised by UTAG-UG.
At a press conference on Tuesday, May 20, the Secretary of the University of Ghana Chapter of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG-UG), Dr Jerry Joe Harrison, faulted the Auditor-General over claims of irregularities in a recent payroll audit report.
The report had indicated that the university overstated employee compensation by GH¢59.2 million, an assertion that the university management had debunked.
According to Dr Harrison, the initial audit report was not shared with them for clarification and/or comments, if any, before the report was made public.

“This is a serious breach of the ethical standards required for this profession. For such a basic ethical ethos to be ignored clearly smacks of incompetence and/or mischief,” he stated, adding, “We therefore call for the Auditor-General to resign honourably, or we will petition the President for his removal.”
Additionally, he requested punishment for all individuals involved in the audit in accordance with the ethics of the profession.
“We also want to state that the situation where auditing has been used as a tool to disallow payments of legitimate claims from sub-vented institutions must stop with immediate effect,” he added.
However, the Audit Service has pointed out that, “Throughout the process, the audit team engaged the entity concerned, raising any deviations with them for their response before the final certificate was signed. It is therefore erroneous for UTAG-UG to assume otherwise.”

Legal practitioner Kwame Jantuah has strongly criticized the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, for what he described as an “immature” response to the arrest of former NPP parliamentary candidate for Adenta, Alfred Kumi.
Speaking on Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey, Jantuah took issue with Kodua’s call for party supporters to gather at Kumi’s residence following the arrest, urging a more responsible approach.
“That advice is immature because what the General Secretary should have said and done is, ‘NPP loyalists, meet the gentleman where they have taken him and defend him,’” Jantuah said.
“It should not be at his house. You don’t have the power to stop that kind of thing. Just because they did it the last time doesn’t mean it should be done every time someone is arrested. It is very wrong.”
He emphasized that party supporters should focus on ensuring legal representation for Kumi rather than engaging in potentially chaotic gatherings.
“If nothing else, you meet him where he’s been taken and get lawyers to defend him,” he advised.
Jantuah also questioned the nature of the arrest, particularly the involvement of national security rather than the police.
“Is this not a national security issue? If national security has gone to arrest him, they have reasons to arrest him. Why wasn’t it the police who arrested him, but national security?” he asked.
While expressing some reservations about the method used in the arrest, Jantuah was unequivocal in his disapproval of how the party leadership reacted.
“What I wasn’t in favor of is the mode they used to arrest him, but it’s an allegation. However, I don’t understand why the General Secretary would say NPP people should go and mass up at the place. We have laws in this country, and a political party cannot decide to be unruly—and he’s been unruly,” he concluded.
The Ministry of Education is implementing a series of measures to address the growing rate of indiscipline in Senior High Schools (SHSs) across the country.
The Deputy Minister of Education, Dr Clement Apaak, revealed in a social media post on Friday that the government will empower Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) to help schools address disciplinary issues.
He also noted that the Mahama administration intends to reintroduce routine searches of students’ belongings, a practice that was discontinued after the New Patriotic Party (NPP) assumed office in 2017.
“The Hon. Minister of Education has, through the Ghana Education Service [GES], authorized the management of secondary schools to conduct searches on students—something that was not permitted under the previous government. In addition, PTAs have been restored to their status prior to 2017. These are just two of many policy measures currently in the pipeline,” he stated.
Dr Apaak said the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, had directed the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service to begin implementing further interventions aimed at achieving holistic reforms in the near future.
He described the issue as “worrying,” and cited it as justification for the need to review the Free SHS policy in order to “improve and sustain it.”
In recent times, there have been several reports of misconduct by students in Senior High Schools. Last week, a 16-year-old student of Osei Kyeretwie Senior High School (SHS) in the Ashanti Region was arrested for possessing a locally manufactured gun without lawful authority.
Earlier this week, a video circulated widely on social media showed a student refusing to tuck in his shirt despite being reprimanded by a teacher.

Large quantities of cannabis set to be smuggled out of the country were intercepted
The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has detained four individuals at Kotoka International Airport following separate attempts to smuggle large quantities of cannabis out of the country.
The arrests, made on Sunday, May 18, 2025, were the result of routine profiling and intelligence-led operations by NACOC officers.
One of the suspects, 23-year-old British citizen Jada Chyna Brown-Frater, was stopped during pre-boarding checks for a British Airways flight to Gatwick.
A search of her luggage revealed 32 slabs of cannabis, weighing a total of 17.72 kilograms. She was taken into custody and is expected to face prosecution.
In a related operation on the same day, NACOC officers intercepted another British national, 19-year-old Christian Williams Owusu, who had just arrived from Dubai on an Emirates flight. Two suitcases in his possession were found to contain 92 slabs of cannabis, amounting to 53.60 kilograms.
Further investigations linked two additional individuals to Owusu’s smuggling attempt. They have also been arrested and are currently assisting with ongoing inquiries.
The Acting Director of Public Affairs and International Relations, Francis Opoku Amoah, reaffirmed the Commission’s resolve to crack down on drug trafficking networks.
He noted that NACOC would continue to enhance surveillance and intelligence gathering to protect Ghana’s borders from the narcotics trade.
Ghana’s mobile money sector reached an all-time high in April 2025, with transactions totaling GH₵365 billion, according to the latest Bank of Ghana report.
This marks a 3.8% increase from March’s GH₵351.7 billion and reflects growing confidence in and usage of digital financial services across the country.
The sharp rise follows the repeal of the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy) in March, which experts believe played a major role in encouraging more high-value transfers.
The total number of transactions also rose from 764 million in March to 778 million in April, signaling sustained user activity and trust in the platform.
April also saw an increase in active mobile money accounts to 24.2 million, while registered accounts grew to 75.2 million. Interoperability transactions—transfers across different networks—climbed to GH₵4.0 billion, up from GH₵3.2 billion the previous month.
Analysts point to expanding mobile penetration, user convenience, and improved digital literacy as key drivers.
With its growing reach, mobile money is increasingly seen as a tool for deepening financial inclusion, especially in rural and underserved areas.

Naval Captain Harriet Manu, Officer-in-Charge of Public Health at the 37 Military Hospital, has disclosed that the hospital’s Tuberculosis Unit recorded 144 cases of TB in 2024, with an impressive 80 percent recovery rate attributed to the dedication of the staff.
Captain Manu highlighted that the facility’s solid team provides professional care for those infected.
She made this known during the handing over of a Ghana Armed Forces TB Control Programme Office to the hospital, sponsored by the PK Foundation, on Thursday, May 22, 2025.
She expressed concern that many cases referred to them often reach an advanced stage, emphasizing the need for early detection, treatment, and counseling.
The hospital not only treats TB patients but also conducts contact tracing to prevent the spread of the disease.
Captain Manu thanked the Foundation for its support, stating that it will enhance advocacy and campaign efforts against TB.
She added that the Department of Health Promotion regularly conducts public education on TB and other infectious diseases, stressing that TB is preventable and curable with early treatment.
“People usually come here with TB at an advanced stage, but I can confidently say that last year, we recorded almost 144 cases with about 80 percent recoveries. The team we have is solid. When you test positive for TB, we embark on contact tracing to ensure the disease has not spread to others. TB is preventable, which is why the Department of Health Promotion conducts public education activities in schools, barracks, and other places to educate people on TB and other diseases,” she said.

Former Deputy Finance Minister and Nhyiaeso MP, Stephen Amoah, has questioned the credibility of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government’s claims of economic improvement just four months into its tenure.
Speaking on Wontumi Radio’s morning show, Amoah cast doubt on the NDC’s ability to effect significant economic progress in such a short time, suggesting that any perceived gains were likely the result of initiatives and policies left behind by the previous administration.
“How could the NDC have improved the economy within four months of coming into power?” he asked.
“The government needs to showcase the independent variables that have generated economic growth in the country over the past three months in 2024,” he added.
He further criticized the government for what he described as minimal economic expenditure, arguing that there hasn’t been enough public spending to drive genuine growth. In his view, this undercuts any claims of rapid recovery or transformation.
Amoah also took aim at the NDC’s apparent focus on forming boards rather than outlining a clear economic direction. “The government’s recent focus on commissioning boards indicates a lack of preparedness to manage the country’s economy effectively,” he said.

Deputy Minister for the Interior, Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi, has justified the presence of armed security personnel at the residence of Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, during an operation on Friday morning in Kumasi.
In an interview with Citi FM, Terlabi stated emphatically that the security services acted on intelligence and had no intention of harming the politician.
“The security services are on top of their job; they know what they are about, and there is nobody in this country who is above the law,” he said.
“When you fall foul of the law, the law will come for you,” he added, defending the rule of law and the authority of security institutions to act when necessary.
According to the deputy minister, the operation was intelligence-led. “Yes, the information is that the security team went there. I am yet to get the details, but what I am saying is that they did not go to Wontumi’s house without intel, and I don’t think I can share all those details on air,” he disclosed.
Responding to concerns raised by Wontumi about the heavy security presence and the use of armed personnel for what he claimed should have been a mere invitation, Terlabi said such precautions were necessary given the public conduct of the NPP chairman.
“My brother, I am sure you and I would call the security services names if they went there unprepared. The kind of things he [Wontumi] says on air—to the extent that there was a time he even challenged the security personnel and the sitting President—if he was trying to do something untoward, the security services must be prepared. That is not to say they were going there to shoot him down,” he clarified.
He further emphasized the seriousness of the situation, likening the approach to the caution taken when dealing with a dangerous animal.
“Because the gentleman in question has made all manner of statements, if you are to go and catch a wild dog, you don’t go there without arming yourself,” he said.
Terlabi also revealed that, although the initial intent was to invite Wontumi, the decision was later made to reschedule the engagement.
“They did not go there to kill him; they went there to invite him. So, if at the end of the day they decided otherwise—that he should be brought in on Monday—so be it,” he concluded.
The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed eight new cases of monkeypox (Mpox), sparking renewed concerns about the spread of the viral disease across the country.
Dr. Dennis Odai Laryea, Consultant Public Health Physician and Deputy Director of Surveillance at the GHS, disclosed the development during an interview on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Friday, May 23.
“Currently, we have eight confirmed cases. Cumulatively, for this year, we have nine. We had one case earlier in the year, which was quickly contained. This current outbreak, as of yesterday, has resulted in eight confirmed cases across two regions, Greater Accra and Western. Four cases have been recorded in each region.”
According to him, the Ghana Health Service has investigated over 100 suspected Mpox cases across the country as part of ongoing surveillance efforts. Although all 16 regions have reported suspected infections, confirmed cases have so far been recorded in only two regions, Greater Accra and Western.
“This is the essence of our surveillance system, identifying and responding to suspected cases before confirmation,” Dr. Laryea explained.
Mpox is a viral disease that spreads through close contact with an infected person, animal, or contaminated objects. Symptoms typically include fever, rash, swollen lymph nodes, back pain, muscle aches, headache, and general fatigue.
In response to the outbreak, the GHS urged the public to take preventive measures seriously. These include practising regular hand hygiene, avoiding physical contact with individuals showing symptoms such as rashes, and reporting any suspected cases to the nearest health facility immediately.
Health authorities are on high alert and have intensified public education and disease monitoring efforts in all regions to curb any potential spread.
The woman, identified as Selina Kuma Kle, sold kenkey at Ho Bankoe Sorkode Station
A 35-year-old woman has died at Adzimakorfe (SDA Down), a suburb of Ho in the Volta Region, after she was allegedly struck by lightning.
The incident occurred near her house at about 6 p.m.

An eyewitness, Christopher Ametefe, told Class News he was staking lotto when the woman also arrived.
“I came to stake lotto, and she also came to stake her own. I had a conversation with her, and she said there’s too much gossiping in this area. I told her that gossiping is everywhere, so she should focus on her life,” he said.
“I staked my lotto and left. Upon reaching home, I realized the agent had made a mistake with the numbers, so I returned to the lotto agent to correct it. Less than five minutes after the rain started, we heard a loud thunderclap with lightning, which struck her down and ended her life,” he recounted.
Ametefe said he was left in shock.
A family member also disclosed that she received a phone call from her sister-in-law breaking the news to her.
“I had a call from my brother’s wife asking if I had heard about the death of my cousin. I told her I hadn’t heard anything. I quickly rushed to the scene to see for myself, and truly, she was dead,” she said.
Meanwhile, Ruddy Kle, alias Paka, an elder brother of the deceased, expressed the belief that, apart from walking in the path of lightning, an individual could be struck if they had an issue with someone and were cursed by that person.
“I know my sister was a quiet person who wouldn’t have issues with anyone, but what I know about a thunder strike is that if you are cursed with it or you walk in its path during the rain and it strikes, you will be a victim,” he said.
Given his sister’s peaceable nature, he believed something was amiss and stated that the issue would be investigated.
Meanwhile, traditional leaders from Ho Bankoe performed rituals to allow Selina’s body to be removed from the scene.
After the rites, the family said they reported the matter to the police for assistance in conveying the body, but their efforts yielded no positive results, resulting in them transporting the deceased to the Ho Teaching Hospital morgue themselves.
Residents remain in a state of fear and panic, as they said such an incident had never happened in their area before.

A violent clash between youth groups in Nsawam Adoagyiri, located in the Eastern Region, has resulted in two deaths and several injuries, according to the Ghana Police Service.
Police investigations indicate that the incident began with a shooting on May 20, 2025, in Adoagyiri, which left one person dead and another injured.
According to a police statement dated May 23, 2025, this incident triggered a reprisal attack involving approximately 300 youths. They blocked roads, burned tyres, and vandalized shops and vehicles in the area.
The retaliation led to three additional injuries, with the victims rushed to the hospital for treatment. One of the injured, Isaah Masawudu, later succumbed to his injuries, further escalating tensions.
Following his death, youths from Adoagyiri Zongo went on a rampage, intensifying the disturbances.
A reinforcement team from the National Police Headquarters and the National Formed Police Unit was deployed to the area and successfully restored calm.
The police stated that efforts are ongoing to apprehend all individuals involved and ensure they face legal consequences.
The Ghana Police Service has urged the public to remain calm, assuring residents that measures have been put in place to maintain law and order in Adoagyiri and its surrounding communities.

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah has raised concerns over mounting land-related issues in the Western-North region, driven by increasing investment interest in its rich natural resources.
The Minister noted that while cocoa farming, timber, mining, and agriculture remain key economic drivers, land disputes and unauthorized development are threatening the region’s growth prospects.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the Western-North Regional Commission Board, Hon. Buah emphasized that the Region’s abundance of natural resources has made it a prime destination for investors. However, the resulting land rush has sparked a surge in ownership conflicts, with multiple claims from stools, families, and individuals creating a web of disputes.
This, he said, has deterred many potential investors and stalled key development initiatives.
“Unauthorized land sales, boundary disputes, and the lack of coordinated land planning are undermining investor confidence and leading to haphazard community expansion,” he noted. “The situation is particularly dire in farming and mining zones where tensions are escalating.”
The Minister also sounded the alarm on illegal mining, known locally as galamsey, which continues to ravage arable lands and pollute vital water bodies, including the Tano and Bia rivers. He revealed that in many cases, farmers and landowners are pressured into surrendering their lands to illegal miners—a practice that jeopardizes food security and ecological stability.
Compounding the issue is the rise in activities of unlicensed surveyors and estate agents, as well as encroachments on public lands, sometimes carried out in collusion with traditional authorities.
To curb these practices, the Hon. Minister called for strict enforcement of the Land Act, 2020 (Act 1036), which introduces severe penalties for unlawful land transactions. He tasked the Lands Commission with leading the charge to restore order and trust in the land sector.
Hon. Armah-Kofi Buah laid out key priorities for the Commission, including:
1. Reducing land registration turnaround time to 30 working days.
2. Decentralizing land services to make them accessible at the district level within two months.
3. Preventing the unlawful conversion of stool lands into family lands where it contradicts customary law.
4. Combating encroachment on public lands, including forests and water bodies.
5. Enforcing strict supervision and ethical standards among Lands Commission staff.
Acknowledging the challenges faced by the Commission, he stressed that the Board’s effectiveness will be judged by results. “Your mandate is crucial to the region’s development agenda. Land is the foundation upon which our economic revival and job creation efforts rest. The public and Government are counting on your dedication.”
Hon. Wilbert Petty Brentum, the Northern Regional Minister indicated that members have been carefully nominated or selected by their respective Assemblies and institutions due to their vast experience in land administration and are hopeful that they would demonstrate commitment, professionalism, fairness, and hard work in the discharge of the commission’s functions.
The Western North Regional Co- ordinating council will work in collaboration with Nanamo and the Regional Lands Commission to ensure smooth land administration in the region, he added.
Mr. George Kobina Richardson the chairman of the board expressed gratitude to the government for the opportunity and pledged the Board’s commitment to ensuring effective and transparent land administration in the region.
At 88, Cameron Duodu stands tall—not just in stature, but as a towering figure in the annals of Ghanaian and international journalism.
His name is woven into the fabric of the profession; his voice still resonates, and his pen remains potent. As this veteran journalist, novelist, broadcaster, and relentless social critic marks his 88th birthday, I am honoured—both personally and professionally—to reflect on a life lived with uncompromising integrity, intellectual depth, and an enduring sense of mission.
Born on May 24, 1937, in Asiakwa in eastern Ghana, Cameron’s rise was not forged by privilege but by perseverance. Financial limitations meant he missed out on formal secondary and university education. Yet, driven by determination and a voracious appetite for knowledge, he charted his own path. Starting as a pupil teacher, he pursued his education privately, enrolling in a correspondence course through Rapid Results College in London. Remarkably, he passed his O-Level and A-Level examinations in just 15 months—a feat that underscored his intellectual drive and passion for reading.
“I never thought of myself as handicapped because of the lack of formal classroom education,” he once said. “Reading helped me in my work as a journalist. I just had the urge to read—and I read everything.”
That relentless habit of reading became the bedrock of an extraordinary career. Cameron began at New Nation, a general-interest magazine in Ghana, before joining the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), where he rose to editor of radio news. His return to magazine publishing as editor of the Ghana edition of Drum—the iconic pan-African magazine—marked a turning point. He became the first African to hold that editorial position, giving voice to a continent on the rise.
In the 1960s, Cameron reached national prominence as editor of the Daily Graphic, Ghana’s most widely circulated newspaper. His incisive editorials and fearless commentary earned him admiration—and resistance. His influence quickly extended beyond Ghana. As a freelance journalist, he wrote for The Guardian, The Observer, The Economist, Financial Times, The Sunday Times, and De Volkskrant (Amsterdam). His work featured in South and Index on Censorship magazines, and he became a regular voice on BBC World and the BBC World Service, where he helped global audiences make sense of African politics, economics, and culture.
Today, he continues to write for New African (London), City Press (Johannesburg), and the Ghanaian Times (Accra), proving that neither age nor time has dulled his pen or dimmed his passion.
The Writer and the Word
Beyond journalism, Cameron is a literary force. His 1967 novel The Gab Boys—published by André Deutsch and later translated into German as Flucht nach Akkra—is a coming-of-age story that probes post-colonial identity, ambition, and moral compromise. Now a staple of African literature, it anticipated the literary activism that would later define a generation of writers. He has also written poetry and plays, enriching the African literary landscape.
Asked what his best-ever articles were, Cameron smiled shyly and asked: “How much space are they giving you? Because I nearly lost my life sometimes, chasing stories in foreign countries. I was… look you need a follow-up piece, I am afraid!”
A Family Tapestry, A Personal Connection
My connection to Uncle Cameron runs deep. Two of his children—Kofi and Yvonne—were my classmates in the 1980 year group. I attended St. Augustine’s College (APSU), Kofi went to Mfantsipim School, and Yvonne to Wesley Girls’ High School—all three of us schooled in Cape Coast, the cradle of Ghanaian academic excellence.
Our familial bonds were further strengthened in Burma Camp. My best friend, Robert Wilson, is the son of Major Letitia Reindorf (Rtd.), and the Duodu children are his cousins. Through that link, our paths crossed early and have remained intertwined. Over the years, I have come to know Cameron’s other children—Yaw, Akwasi, Korieh, Maureen—and admire the close-knit, accomplished family he and his wife raised.
The Beer and the Thinkers
I have had the pleasure of many long, illuminating conversations with Cameron. He fondly recalls spirited intellectual exchanges with the late Prof. Kofi Awoonor—poet, diplomat, and former UN ambassador—and my late father, Col. Peter Mama Agbeko (Rtd.), a lawyer and army officer who served as the first Director of Legal Services of the Ghana Armed Forces. Their friendship, often accompanied by “some very cold and refreshing beer,” was a meeting of great minds who debated politics, literature, and the human condition with relentless passion.
Still Speaking Truth to Power
Even as an octogenarian, Cameron remains deeply engaged in national discourse. One issue that grips him is galamsey—the scourge of illegal mining that threatens Ghana’s environment and future. He has written compellingly about its dangers, calling it “an existential threat.” On more than one occasion, he has urged me personally to “keep writing on galamsey,” determined to keep the issue in the public consciousness until real solutions emerge.
Faith and the World
Though not born Catholic, Cameron holds a deep admiration for the late Pope Francis, whom he sees as a beacon of humility, moral clarity, and courage—qualities he holds dear. This admiration has shaped a thoughtful and more positive view of the Catholic Church, a perspective he shares with sincerity and reflection.
Recognition from Home
It was fitting that at this year’s Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) World Press Freedom Day and Honours Awards Night, Cameron was formally recognised for his outstanding contributions to journalism. The GJA tribute honoured his pioneering work, moral compass, and decades-long influence on generations of journalists.
Indeed, when my APSU/GIJ classmate and friend Kobby Asmah served as Editor of the Daily Graphic, Uncle Cameron and other distinguished veterans provided invaluable behind-the-scenes guidance and support. Their quiet mentorship helped uphold the values of professionalism and truth that remain essential to journalism today.
A Living Legacy
Cameron Duodu’s legacy is not confined to newspaper bylines or literary pages. It lives on in the people he has inspired, the ideas he has shaped, and the standards he has set. He reminds us that journalism is not just a job—it is a calling. His values—truth, justice, courage, and intellectual curiosity—continue to guide many, myself included.
As he turns 88, we celebrate more than a birthday—we celebrate a purposeful life that has enriched Ghana, Africa, and the world. Cameron Duodu is still writing, still challenging, still thinking—and still calling us all to do better.
Happy birthday, Uncle Cameron. You are, and will always be, a national treasure.

Alfred Ababio Kumi has been released unconditionally from NIB custody
Alfred Ababio Kumi, popularly known as Adenta Kumi, a former NPP parliamentary aspirant for Adenta, has been released unconditionally by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) on the evening of Friday, May 23, 2025.
His release follows his arrest by the NIB in the early hours of the same day. He was officially charged with making a false publication.
In a petition, Kumi cited allegations of misconduct that he believes could undermine the integrity of the inquiry being conducted by the Pwamang Committee into the removal of the Chief Justice.
Kumi alleged that on May 15, 2025, after the committee’s inaugural sitting, Justices Pwamang and Adibu-Asiedu, along with Supreme Court Justice Yonni Kulendi, were seen dining with Thaddeus Sory, counsel for petitioner Daniel Ofori, at Santoku Restaurant in Accra’s Airport Residential Area.
He claimed they were overheard discussing matters related to the petition.
However, CCTV footage from the restaurant, which captures the presence of the individuals mentioned, does not appear to fully support Kumi’s claims.
In a video shared by Asaase Radio on social media, Alfred Ababio Kumi is seen in a vehicle with the Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, who confirmed the young politician’s release.
“So, I am with Adenta Kumi. He is a free man. We just picked him up from NIB custody; he has been given an unconditional release. I pray that democracy prevails. This so-called ‘reset,’ where everyone is being frustrated, harassed, and intimidated using state security to attack citizens, must stop. It is unfortunate, but at long last, there is some common sense,” the Minority Leader stated.
The recently appointed advisor to the Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Professor John Gartchie Gatsi, who is also Dean of the University of Cape Coast Business School, is leading a team to help drive the introduction of Islamic Banking in Ghana, Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Asiama , has said.
Islamic banking is defined as a banking system which is in consonance with the spirit, ethos and value system of Islam and governed by the principles laid down by Islamic Shariah. Interest-free banking is a narrow concept denoting a number of banking instruments or operations which avoid interest.
Answering questions during the 124th MPC press conference in Accra on Friday, May 24, Dr Asiama stated emphatically that the Bank of Ghana has the internal capacity to handle Islamic Banking.
He said, “Professor Gatsi is purposely here to help drive this introduction. Let me say that we have internal capacity, we have some people who know what it takes and what to do. However, we need a few steps. The head of banking supervision has gone through a lot of programmes, he is very comfortable with them. The current banking law, which is Act 930, which we passed in 2016, provides for it. However, there were some lapses. For example, the establishment of the Sharia supervisory boards and the like. Those were not captured in Act 930, so Prof Gatsi and his team will be doing some work in that regard to ensure that we are able to operationalise Islamic financing, especially Islamic banking. Remember, it goes just beyond Islamic Banking, there are other aspects of financing involved. So we are working on it, hopefully very soon, when we are ready, we can consider licenses to establish an Islamic Bank.”
In other areas, Dr Johnson Asiama assured Ghanaians and the general public that they will soon see adjustments in prices of goods and services so long as there is competition.
This follows the appreciation of the Cedi against the Dollar.
Asked when Ghanaians are to expect price predictions on the market following the stability of the local currency, Dr Asiama answered that “You can understand that some people stock their goods at a higher exchange rate, and so naturally, even with the appreciation, it takes a while for you to see that adjustment.
“However, rest assured that you will see the adjustment certainly so long as there is competition, so long as it is not a monopoly, and we will see that kind of phenomenon very soon.”
Asked again whether the appreciation is sustainable, he answered, “The Cedi appreciation has to be put into proper context. Much as you want to have Cedi stability in nominal terms, the important thing here is to ensure that in real terms, the Cedi is not appreciating persistently. And so the MPC went into a lot of deliberations, looked at the real movement of the exchange rate, and we think that where we are now, we don’t have that problem of real appreciation that would adversely impact our competitiveness.
“So, for now, we think that the trend is in line; we are observing it continuously, though. But the appreciation is largely driven by the markets, it is not something that the central bank is using its reserves for. If you look at the data pack we have put out, you can see that our reserve programme is growing, so we are not using our reserves to intervene in the market, therefore, the appreciation you are seeing is driven by economic policy stance of the monetary policy, by international flows. So yes, it is appreciation; however, for us, it is about maintaining exchange rate stability .”
Prior to his answers, Dr Asiama had announced at the press conference that the MPC has maintained the Policy Rate at 28 per cent.
Dr Asiama stated, among other things, that headline inflation has declined consecutively in the first four months of the year, driven by both food and non-food inflation.
“The external sector has continued to improve, with a record provisional current account surplus of US$2.1 billion in the first quarter of 2025, driven mainly by higher prices and increased production volumes of gold and cocoa, and strong remittance inflows. The current account surplus, together with net outflows in the capital and financial account, resulted in an overall Balance of Payments surplus of US$1.1 billion. The strong external performance resulted in significant reserve accumulation. Gross International Reserves (GIR) amounted to US$10.7 billion in April 2025, equivalent to 4.7 months of import of goods and services. Broadly, the external sector outlook remains favourable, largely anchored on expectations of increased gold and cocoa export receipts, as well as inflows from remittances.
“The cedi has rebounded strongly against the major trading currencies driven by a combination of factors, including tight monetary policy stance, ongoing fiscal consolidation, record reserve accumulation, strict enforcement of foreign exchange market rules, and improved market sentiment. In the year to May 21, 2025, the cedi had appreciated against all the major currencies – 24.1 percent against the US dollar, 16.2 percent against the British pound, and 14.1 percent against the euro.
“The latest forecast points to continued easing of inflationary pressures on the back of tight monetary policy stance, exchange rate stability, and fiscal consolidation. Inflation is expected to ease faster towards the medium-term target in the first quarter of 2026 as opposed to the second quarter as earlier envisaged, barring unanticipated shocks. Despite these positive developments, the Committee observed that the current level of inflation remains high relative to the medium-term target and will require maintaining the tight stance to reinforce the disinflation process. Under the circumstances, the Committee, by a unanimous decision, maintained the policy rate at 28 percent,” he said.

He attributed this to a tight monetary stance, ongoing fiscal consolidation, record reserve accumulation, and strict enforcement of the forex market rules.
“The external sector has continued to improve, with a record provisional current account surplus of US$2.1 billion in the first quarter of 2025, driven mainly by higher prices and increased production volumes of gold and cocoa, and strong remittance inflows. The current account surplus, together with net outflows in the capital and financial account, resulted in an overall Balance of Payments surplus of US$1.1 billion. The strong external performance resulted in significant reserve accumulation. Gross International Reserves (GIR) amounted to US$10.7 billion in April 2025, equivalent to 4.7 months of import of goods and services. Broadly, the external sector outlook remains favourable, largely anchored on expectations of increased gold and cocoa export receipts, as well as inflows from remittances.
“The cedi has rebounded strongly against the major trading currencies driven by a combination of factors, including tight monetary policy stance, ongoing fiscal consolidation, record reserve accumulation, strict enforcement of foreign exchange market rules, and improved market sentiment. In the year to May 21, 2025, the cedi had appreciated against all the major currencies – 24.1 percent against the US dollar, 16.2 percent against the British pound, and 14.1 percent against the euro.
“The latest forecast points to continued easing of inflationary pressures on the back of tight monetary policy stance, exchange rate stability, and fiscal consolidation. Inflation is expected to ease faster towards the medium-term target in the first quarter of 2026 as opposed to the second quarter as earlier envisaged, barring unanticipated shocks. Despite these positive developments, the Committee observed that the current level of inflation remains high relative to the medium-term target and will require maintaining the tight stance to reinforce the disinflation process. Under the circumstances, the Committee, by a unanimous decision, maintained the policy rate at 28 percent,” he said.

Basintale criticised the longstanding remuneration structure, describing it as outdated and unjust.

He described the existing contract as both unfair and exploitative, vowing not to renew it in its current form.

The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has dismissed reports of operational and safety lapses at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA).
It follows widespread reportage suggesting a series of allegations regarding equipment shortages, staff safety and restricted access protocols.
But management of GACL in a statement rebutted and described the reports as not only misrepresented but also false and misleading because they undermine the reputation of the aviation industry.
While warning that individuals spreading false information or defamatory content will face disciplinary and legal action, it added that it will continue to maintain world-class safety and operational standards at its facilities.

“The attention of Management of GACL has been drawn to a publication in the Herald Newspaper of Friday, May 23, 2025 on various media platforms.
GACL wishes to respond as follows:
The article alleges that there is only one operational vehicle. On the contrary the Airside Operations Section has two dedicated vehicles to support the airside operations, in addition to a fleet of operational vehicles available for round the clock use.
The assertion that only three pairs of wands are currently operational is false. The number of marshalling wands used depends on aircraft movement. Currently there is a surplus of marshalling wands in stock for operations at the company’s central stores.
Staff of Airside Operations Section have been provided with the required quantity of Personal Protective Equipment (i.e reflective vests, wellington boots, raincoat, safety boots, hand gloves, ear defenders, googles & safety blankets). This assertion is categorically false. PPE’s were distributed in Accra and the regional airports as well.
The claim that Motorola radios used for coordinating operations are mostly unserviceable is false. The Airside Operations section has been provided with adequate handheld and base radios for effective communication between the Airside Operations and Air Traffic Control.
Regarding access to some restricted areas of the airport, there is a protocol where Aviation Security grant staff access to restricted areas as and when necessary. This is to enhance security while maintaining safety standards, therefore the allegation of airside staff unable to access certain restricted areas to carry out inspections is false.
There is currently no agitation amongst staff of Airside operations as a few bad nuts would want. Staff found complicit in fabricating and spreading malicious lies about the organization to put the image of the company, the management and the government’s image into disrepute emanating from their own parochial interest will be dealt with severely.
Media houses who accept to disseminate defamatory articles without researching the facts will also be dealt with according to the full rigors of the law.

Ranking Member of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour
Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, former Deputy Minister of Education and Ranking Member on Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, has called on Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa to resign immediately following reports that Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang returned to Ghana aboard a private jet.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, Ntim Fordjour invoked Ablakwa’s past comments and vows made while in opposition, insisting that the Minister must now live up to his own standards.
“Okudzeto Ablakwa… do the noble thing and resign with immediate effect,” the former deputy minister stated. “You hang yourself with your words!”
Ntim Fordjour’s comments reference Ablakwa’s well-known stance against the use of private jets for presidential and vice-presidential travel.
While in opposition, Ablakwa publicly criticised such travel arrangements as wasteful and unnecessary, often publishing detailed accounts of costs and raising concerns over government expenditure.
According to Ntim Fordjour, these past remarks were “populist stunts” which earned Ablakwa applause within his party but failed to acknowledge the reality that certain official exigencies might necessitate the use of private jets.
“You were categorical in your vow. You dared Ghanaians that you would immediately resign as Minister if your Presidency used a private jet in their regime,” Fordjour asserted in his post.
He added that the current situation involving Vice President Opoku-Agyemang, whose flight was reportedly paid for with public funds, represents a clear breach of the principles Ablakwa claimed to uphold.
“Be a man of PRINCIPLES and RESIGN!” he urged. Fordjour also clarified that using private jets is not inherently criminal or inappropriate when the official Presidential jet is unavailable.
As of the time of reporting, Mr Ablakwa has not publicly responded to Rev. Fordjour’s demand.
However, the issue has already sparked political debate and renewed scrutiny over government expenditure and accountability.

Alfred Ababio Kumi, a former NPP parliamentary aspirant for Adenta has been officially charged with making a false publication.
This update follows his earlier arrest by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) in the early hours of Friday, May 23, 2025.
Speaking to the media at the NIB headquarters in Kawukudi, Clement Opoku Gyamfi, legal counsel for Alfred Ababio Kumi, provided details regarding the charges against his client.
He explained that the charge of false publication relates to an interview Kumi granted.
Gyamfi further noted that a post made by Kumi on his X account, as well as a petition he submitted to the President, are also among the actions forming the basis of the charges.
“He’s been charged with false publication in relation to an interview he granted on a traditional media and then something he posted on his X account and then a petition he wrote to the President. These three,” he said.
Kumi’s legal representative further stated that his client has been officially cautioned by the NIB and added that steps are currently being taken to secure bail on his behalf.
“They cautioned and then they charged him, so as far as the process is concerned, we are almost through because once there is an interrogation, you are cautioned first and then they press charges against you. Technically, I’m sure the next should either be in courts but we’ve put in a bail application,” he added.
Gyamfi had earlier reported that his client was in good condition following a visit he was permitted to make in his capacity as legal counsel.
“I’ve been giving access to him. I went in there and saw him. He is okay except that ordinarily a married man and family person shouldn’t come out in that nature of outfit. I didn’t like it. I’ve spoken to him. He’s in good condition from my perspective,” he said earlier.
Meanwhile, the NPP has condemned the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, for what it termed as a deliberate abuse of power to silence dissenting voices and undermining democratic principles in Ghana after recent raids.
In a press statement signed by NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, the party warned that such actions threaten transparency, justice, and equality before the law.

Alfred Ababio Kumi has been released unconditionally from NIB custody
Alfred Ababio Kumi, popularly known as Adenta Kumi, a former NPP parliamentary aspirant for Adenta, has been released unconditionally by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) on the evening of Friday, May 23, 2025.
His release follows his arrest by the NIB in the early hours of the same day. He was officially charged with making a false publication.
In a petition, Kumi cited allegations of misconduct that he believes could undermine the integrity of the inquiry being conducted by the Pwamang Committee into the removal of the Chief Justice.
Kumi alleged that on May 15, 2025, after the committee’s inaugural sitting, Justices Pwamang and Adibu-Asiedu, along with Supreme Court Justice Yonni Kulendi, were seen dining with Thaddeus Sory, counsel for petitioner Daniel Ofori, at Santoku Restaurant in Accra’s Airport Residential Area.
He claimed they were overheard discussing matters related to the petition.
However, CCTV footage from the restaurant, which captures the presence of the individuals mentioned, does not appear to fully support Kumi’s claims.
In a video shared by Asaase Radio on social media, Alfred Ababio Kumi is seen in a vehicle with the Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, who confirmed the young politician’s release.
“So, I am with Adenta Kumi. He is a free man. We just picked him up from NIB custody; he has been given an unconditional release. I pray that democracy prevails. This so-called ‘reset,’ where everyone is being frustrated, harassed, and intimidated using state security to attack citizens, must stop. It is unfortunate, but at long last, there is some common sense,” the Minority Leader stated.

The arrest this morning after he submitted a petition to President John Mahama, calling for the dissolution of a committee investigating the removal of the Chief Justice.
Mr Kumi, a former New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary aspirant in Adentan, alleged misconduct on the part of the committee members that, he claimed, could compromise the credibility of their inquiry.

President John Dramani Mahama has refuted former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s assertion that the current administration lacks specific policies impacting the performance of the currency by attributing the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi to good leadership and governance.
Speaking to the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference on Friday, May 23, President Mahama said that intentional leadership decisions, not sporadic policy implementations, are what have led to the economic stabilization and misery reduction gains.
“Somebody says, point to one policy that you have implemented to make the cedi appreciate, and I said it’s not about one policy. The answer is effective leadership,” President Mahama said.
“With effective leadership, we can turn this economy around and create a better life for our people, and that is what I’m committed to.”
Dr Bawumia challenged the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to pinpoint a specific policy that was responsible for the improvement in the cedi’s performance during a meeting with Young Executive Forum (YEF) members in London.
“If you are to ask the NDC to point out exactly what policy they have implemented that has resulted in the appreciation of the cedi, they cannot tell you one,” Dr. Bawumia said.
He ascribed the currency’s stability to long-standing programs like the NPP’s gold buyback scheme.
Responding to Dr Bawumia’s assertion, President Mahama emphasized the significance of leadership in reviving public trust and promoting economic recovery.
“Ghanaians had bought into the message, and they believed that I would be able to reset things in order to build the confidence of our people in our democracy again,” he noted.
“Every step I’ve taken is meant to restore the faith of our people in our democracy and let them know that we can lead this country in a way different from what has been done in the past.”

Specifically, he claimed that on May 15, 2025, after the committee’s inaugural sitting, Justices Pwamang and Adibu-Asiedu—along with Supreme Court Justice Yonni Kulendi—were spotted dining with Thaddeus Sory, counsel for petitioner Daniel Ofori, at Santoku Restaurant in the Airport Residential Area of Accra.
Kumi further alleged that the group was overheard discussing matters related to the ongoing petition.
The case has stirred political attention due to its implications for judicial independence and freedom of expression, with Kumi’s supporters arguing that his arrest was politically motivated.

The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Bank of Ghana is set to announce its decision on the policy rate, a key determinant of lending costs for the next two months.
The policy rate dictates the interest rate at which banks lend to businesses and the private sector, significantly influencing economic activity.
During its 123rd meeting in 2025, the MPC raised the policy rate by 100 basis points, from 27 percent to 28 percent, citing inflationary risks in the economic outlook.
At the opening of the 124th MPC meeting on Wednesday, March 21, 2025, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Asiama, stated that Ghana’s economy is showing early signs of stabilisation, supported by recent policy measures and improving economic fundamentals, both domestic and external.
However, he was quick to caution that “the path ahead remains complex and fraught with risks, both global and domestic.”
The Governor also highlighted recent positive developments in the economy, including a notable decline in inflation and a strong appreciation of the cedi.

Members of Parliament’s gender committee with staff and residents of the Echoing Hills Village
Members of the Gender Committee of Parliament led by their Ranking Member and Member of Parliament for Nsuta Kwaman Beposo, Ntim Adelaide, has committed individual donations to the Echoing Hills Village in the La Nkwantanang Municipal Assembly.
During a visit by the committee on Friday, May 23 2025, the Ranking Member donated a sum of GH¢5,000 towards the surgery of one of the indwellers.
The Member of Parliament for Dormaa East, Owusua Amma Rachel also pledged to construct a borehole for the village upon hearing of their challenges with accessing water and paying their bills.
Other members of the committee also pledged various donations towards the operation of the home.
Echoing Hills Village, located in Madina, Accra, is a non-profit care facility and orphanage founded by American missionaries including Rev. Cordell Brown with a mission to support vulnerable children and individuals with disabilities.
Established around the 1990s, it provides a home for orphans, abandoned children, victims of abuse and those with special needs such as down syndrome, autism, cerebral palsy and mental health conditions.
Addressing the delegation from Parliament, the administrator of Echoing Hills Village, Reverend William Okyere, revealed that the home currently cares for about 50 persons including some 53 residents.
He disclosed that the facility relies heavily on donations of food, sanitary products and funds from individuals, organisations and groups.
He stated that the village is faced with various challenges, ranging from inadequate operational funding and appealed to the committee to advocate for support for the village.
The visit by the committee forms part of its ongoing tour of orphanages and care homes to acquaint themselves with the operations and challenges of such facilities.

President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to building a legacy of effective governance that, he says, no future administration will be able to undo.
Speaking at a meeting with members of the clergy on Friday, May 23, Mahama emphasized his determination to revive Ghana’s economy and strengthen democratic principles through decisive and principled leadership.
“With effective leadership, we can turn this economy around and create a better life for our people, and that is what I’m committed to,” Mahama said.
He further stressed the importance of long-term reforms that would set a new benchmark for governance in the country.
“We want to make sure that by the time we finish these four years, we will set such a standard in government that whichever party or whichever people come into governance cannot reverse the gains that we have made in restoring our people’s confidence in our democracy,” he added.
Mahama also addressed recent comments by former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who had questioned the NDC’s claim to credit for the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi. During an interaction with the Young Executive Forum (YEF) in London, Dr. Bawumia challenged the NDC to name a specific policy responsible for the cedi’s improved performance.
“If you are to ask the NDC to point out exactly what policy they have implemented that has resulted in the appreciation of the cedi… they cannot tell you one,” Bawumia said, attributing the cedi’s strength to legacy initiatives such as the NPP’s gold purchase programme.
In response, President Mahama dismissed the idea that a single policy could be credited for the cedi’s recovery, instead attributing the gains to overall leadership.
“Somebody says, point to one policy that you have implemented to make the cedi appreciate, and I said one policy? It’s not about one policy. The answer is effective leadership,” he stated.
