The future is African: Investing in youth, innovation and sustainability

0

As Ghana joins the rest of the continent to mark African Union Day, we are reminded of how far we have come and how much potential still lies ahead.

This year’s commemoration should not only honour the vision of African unity but also sharpen our focus on the continent’s greatest assets – its people, its ideas and its resilience.

In recent years, the phrase “The Future is African” has grown in popularity. Beyond the slogan lies a compelling truth. Africa is young, dynamic and increasingly self-determined.

From the energy of her youth to the creativity of her innovators and the urgency of her sustainability journey, the future of Africa will be shaped by young Africans, and that journey has already begun.

A youthful continent on the rise, Africa is home to the world’s youngest population. With a median age of just under 20, our continent is bursting with ambition, talent and creativity.

Here in Ghana, the energy of our young people pulses through every corner of the economy, from bustling tech hubs in Accra to farms in the Upper East, from digital content creators to fashion entrepreneurs carving out a name for themselves on the global stage.

Yet, the promise of a youthful population is not guaranteed. It demands deliberate investment in education, skills development, mentorship, and opportunity. It requires both the public and private sectors to create pathways where talent is not only discovered but nurtured and empowered.

In communities where young people are given the tools to lead, they do not wait for change, they become it. The future of Africa will be written by the hands of its youth. But we must give them pens, not just paper.

Innovation is our inheritance

Africa is not new to innovation. Long before the word became a buzzword, African communities had their own systems of problem-solving rooted in adaptation, community, and resourcefulness.

Today, that spirit of innovation has only been amplified with technology. In Ghana, we are witnessing a generation that is leapfrogging limitations. Mobile money has revolutionized financial inclusion. Agritech solutions are helping farmers improve yield and access markets.

Healthtech platforms are closing the gap between rural communities and quality care. These innovations are not imported; they are African-born, designed for African realities.

But innovation requires an enabling environment: access to capital, mentorship, digital infrastructure and policies that encourage experimentation.

If Africa is to compete globally, we must treat innovation not as a luxury but as a necessity, especially for young people whose ideas often emerge from lived experiences.

Sustainable Africa is a stronger Africa

Perhaps the most urgent opportunity and challenge facing the continent today is the need for sustainable development.

Climate change, environmental degradation, and resource scarcity are not distant threats; they are present realities, especially for those whose livelihoods depend directly on the land and the sea.

Yet in adversity lies opportunity. Across Africa, young leaders are driving green innovation, from renewable energy start-ups to eco-friendly fashion, sustainable farming to recycling ventures.

These are not fringe movements, they are the foundations of a new African economy, one that is both forward-looking and planet-conscious.

In Ghana, the rise of green entrepreneurship and climate advocacy among the youth signals a shift in how we think about progress.

Sustainability is no longer just about conservation; it’s about survival, dignity, and building an Africa that will thrive for generations.

Building the future we want, African Union Day should be more than a celebration. It ought to be a moment of reflection and responsibility. It invites us to ask the question, “What kind of Africa are we building? And who are we building it for?”

The answers lie not in distant capitals or borrowed models, but right here, in the ideas of a young innovator in Tamale, in the voice of a climate activist in Ada, and the determination of a woman-valued enterprise in Kumasi.

The answers lie in our classrooms, our communities, and in the everyday choices we make as citizens. The future is African. Not because the rest of the world says so, but because we are shaping it ourselves with urgency, with hope, and with a deep, unwavering sense of purpose.

On this African Union Day, let us recommit to investing in what truly matters: our people, our ideas, and our planet. Because the future isn’t just coming. It is already here. And it is African.

Posting your child online without consent could breach Ghanaian laws – Lawyer warns influencers

Boakye stated that doing so could be in violation of several laws protecting minors in the country Boakye stated that doing so could be in violation of several laws protecting minors in the country

Legal practitioner Abena Boakye has issued a strong caution to parents, particularly influencers and content creators, on the legal and ethical dangers of posting their children online without proper consent.

Speaking at the ‘A Convergence of Mothers’ event in Accra, during a session focused on the legalities of raising children in Ghana, Boakye emphasized that while many parents enjoy sharing milestones of their children, doing so could be in violation of several laws protecting minors in the country.

She cited key legal frameworks that guide child protection in Ghana, including the 1992 Constitution, the Children’s Act, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, the Labour Law, the Data Protection Act, and the Cybersecurity Act.

“Children cannot give legal consent to be posted online,” she stated plainly. “They are not 18 yet. So, as a mother, you have to put yourself in the shoes of your child. Imagine that child at age 10 or 18 stumbling on a picture or video of themselves as toddlers, perhaps half-naked in diapers. How would that feel?”

The lawyer stressed that uploading videos or pictures of children, especially in ways that could be considered humiliating, overly commercialized, or invasive, violates their rights to privacy and dignity. This, she warned, could invite legal consequences from state institutions, including Social Welfare.

Boakye referenced a recent case she handled where two children were removed from their mother by Ghana’s Social Welfare Department due to online privacy violations. She used this to illustrate that “Social Welfare in Ghana actually works.”

For parents and influencers who wish to involve their children in brand or advertising deals, she advised following due process by first seeking approval from the Labour Department and obtaining permits from the Ghana Standards Authority.

“If you get a contract to advertise your child, the government must protect that child. You don’t know if the money from that campaign is even going into an account for the child’s future,” she explained.

Abena Boakye also raised concerns about the risks of artificial intelligence in an era where images of children can be easily manipulated. “AI can remove a diaper and expose a baby. Even if it’s not their private parts, it is still illegal and punishable,” she warned.

She concluded with a set of practical recommendations for modern parents, urging them to avoid posting their children online, especially when the children are in vulnerable states. If they must post, she advised that the content should be carefully censored, with comments either limited or turned off entirely.

She encouraged the use of private platforms like WhatsApp or controlled Snapchat stories to share such moments selectively.

Above all, she emphasized the need for parents to reflect on the long-term psychological impact such posts might have on both themselves and their children.

The legal session formed part of the broader event themed “Yesterday’s Daughters, Today’s Mothers” a forum designed to bridge generational insights into motherhood.

Hosted by media personality MzGee, the event brought together mothers across generations to share lessons, challenges, and evolving approaches to parenting in today’s digital world.

Other speakers at the gathering included Alberta Mensah (mother of Richie Mensah of Lynx Entertainment), gospel artiste Piesie Esther, broadcaster Whitney Boakye-Mensah, Dr. Jemima Nunoo, and social entrepreneur Afia Akoto, among others. Topics discussed spanned maternal mental health, adolescent parenting, special needs care, and nutrition.

NSB staff, ‘errand boy’ file witness statement against Adu-Boahene

Kwabena Adu-Boahene has been slapped with charges for allegedly transferring GH¢49m to his account Kwabena Adu-Boahene has been slapped with charges for allegedly transferring GH¢49m to his account

The Office of the Attorney General has reportedly filed witness statements in the case against former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau, Kwabena Adu-Boahene, who has been slapped with 11 charges for allegedly transferring GH¢49 million (approximately $7 million) from the bureau’s account to his personal account.

According to a report by citinewsroom.com, the state has filed at least three witness statements against Adu-Boahene and his co-accused – his wife, Angela Adjei-Boateng; their associate, Mildred Boateng and a company jointly owned by Adu-Boahene and his wife, Advantage Solutions Limited.

The report indicated that the media house has sighted three witness statements of the state which were submitted by Frank Marshall Crowell, the case investigator; the Director of Finance at the National Signals Bureau, Edith Ruby Adumuah and Frank Anane Dekpey, an errand boy for the accused persons.

The NSB Director of Finance’s statement is reported to have alleged that her former boss, Adu-Boahene, engaged in a lot of shady transactions.

These suspicious transactions, she claimed, correspond to the amount allegedly misappropriated.

The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, disclosed that Kwabena Adu-Boahene, the former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), had been arrested in connection with the alleged diversion of public funds meant for a cybersecurity defence system.

Addressing the press on Monday, March 24, 2025, Dr Ayine stated that Adu-Boahene was implicated in the unauthorised transfer of $7 million, originally allocated for cybersecurity infrastructure, into his private accounts.

“In his capacity as Director of the National Signals Bureau, Mr Adu-Boahene, on January 30, 2020, signed a contract on behalf of the Government of Ghana and the National Security on the one hand, and on the other hand, an Israeli company named RLC Holdings Limited. The contract was for the purchase of a cyber defence system software at a price of $7 million,” the Attorney General said.

Adu-Boahene (L) and his wife

Providing further details, Dr Ayine disclosed that just days after signing the agreement, Adu-Boahene initiated a suspicious transaction.

“On February 6, 2020, he then transferred an initial amount of GH¢27,100,000 from the National Signals Bureau account at Fidelity Bank to a private BNC account at UMB. Official documentation on the transfer reveals that the amount was for the payment of cyber defence system software. He transferred the money to his private company,” he told the media.

According to Dr Ayine, investigations further uncovered that the former NSB boss allegedly channelled the funds not only into his personal account but also into accounts belonging to his wife.

He subsequently filed 11 corruption-related charges against Adu-Boahene and three other accused persons – the wife of Adu-Boahene, Angela Adjei-Boateng; his company, Advantage Solutions Limited; and a banker, Mildred Donkor.

‘One of us was in trouble’ – Bryan Acheampong explains Wontumi bail support

0

Former Minister for Food and Agriculture and Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has explained his decision to stand as surety for Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

Dr. Acheampong submitted documents to support the bail requirements, helping secure Wontumi’s release from the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Monday, June 2, 2025.

Speaking to journalists shortly after the release, Dr. Acheampong said his action was driven by a sense of solidarity and responsibility towards a party member in distress.

“It serves us no good. What is important is that one of us was in trouble. He was arrested, and we needed, as part of the legal process, to provide surety for bail, which has been done. He has been released, and now we wait for the next steps,” he said.

Chairman Wontumi had been in EOCO custody since May 27, under investigation for alleged offences including fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state. His release followed the fulfilment of a GH¢50 million bail condition, which required two justified sureties.

Although his legal team reportedly met the bail conditions by May 30, his release was delayed due to a pending High Court motion seeking a review of the terms. That motion was withdrawn on June 2, clearing the path for his release.

Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem-Sai had earlier indicated that investigations could potentially link Wontumi to a broader international organised crime network.

Chairman Wontumi is expected to cooperate fully with authorities as investigations continue.

Education Minister orders IGF audit in public universities

0

The Ministry of Education has directed the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to demand accountability from public universities regarding the utilisation of their internally generated funds (IGFs).

According to the Ministry, there is an urgent need to assess how these funds are contributing to access to quality education and the development of educational infrastructure.

Speaking at the commissioning of the Dr. Paul Effah Conference Hall for the Ghana Tertiary Education sector on Tuesday, June 3, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu emphasised that while the government continues to support public universities, it is equally critical for the institutions to demonstrate prudent use of their own generated revenues.

“We must shine the light on the universities’ utilisation of their IGF and how that benefits expanding access to quality higher education, particularly the provision of residential halls and, more importantly, lecture theatres.”

The Minister also tasked the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to develop a comprehensive blueprint for the establishment of polytechnics in every region.

He emphasised that these regional polytechnics will serve as transitional institutions, equipping students with hands-on competencies needed for the job market.

“…Don’t you think that another layer is for us to have a polytechnic in each region in Ghana to provide a link between senior high school and the university? What do we do to improve the industry connection?

“So maybe your council would want to look into this and give the president a blueprint, but it is a possible pursuit in expanding access to higher education that government will think ahead and see if we can have a polytechnic in each of the 16 regions of Ghana to expand, increase access to higher education that still focuses on employability and industry.”

Mahama commends Otumfuo’s efforts towards resolving Bawku conflict

0

By Iddi Yire

Accra, June 3, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama has commended Otumfuo Osei Tutu, the Asantehene, for his efforts towards resolving the Bawku conflict.

The President gave the commendation during Otumfuo’s courtesy call on him at the Presidency in Accra.

The Otumfuo and his retinue were at the Presidency to congratulate President Mahama on his election victory in the December 7, 2024, general election and to return the President’s visit to Manhyia within the first two weeks of his assumption of office.

He lauded the Otumfuo for consistently using his platform not only to uphold cultural heritage, but also to address the most urgent challenges facing the nation in education, health, justice, and above all, peace.

He said among Otumfuo’s greatest national contributions was his successful mediation of the long-standing Dagbon Chieftaincy crisis.

He said through Otumfuo’s steady hand and moral authority as Chair of the Committee of Eminent Chiefs, he led Dagbon from years of painful division into an era of reconciliation and renewed leadership.

“Today, the Kingdom of Dagbon stands united and strong thanks to your tireless commitment and your unifying spirit,” the President stated.

“Once again, at a critical time of our nation’s history, you’ve stepped forward to assist our nation in another moment of great need.

“Your Majesty’s ongoing efforts to mediate the Bawku conflict, though complex and challenging, offer our country a renewed sense of hope.”

President Mahama said through quiet diplomacy and cultural sensitivity and unwavering resolve, the Asantehene was helping to pave the way towards enduring peace in one of the most fragile areas of the Republic.

“I wish you well in this endeavour and we all have confidence that lasting peace will come to Bawku.”

These contributions, the President said, were not just acts of service, they were acts of nation-building, adding that they reflected the Otumfuo’s deep understanding that Ghana’s progress depended on the ability to live together in unity, mutual respect, and justice.

“As President of the Republic, I want to assure you and all traditional authorities of this government’s commitment to work in full partnership with the Institution of Chieftaincy,” President Mahama said.

“We do not see traditional leadership as relics of the past, but as essential partners in shaping our nation’s future.”

The Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu hailed President Mahama for his humility and further urged him to keep it up.

He said as a traditional ruler, he supported whoever the Ghanaian people chose to be President, and he extended his support to President Mahama.

He urged the President to be bold to perform what he could, and not to disappoint Ghanaians, who voted him into office.

Present at the meeting was Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.

Nations FC allege men with knives and guns arrived in a bus, forcing match abandonment

0

Players of Nations FC abandoned the game against Holy Stars Players of Nations FC abandoned the game against Holy Stars

Nations FC have made explosive allegations following their decision to abandon their Ghana Premier League Week 33 clash against Basake Holy Stars, claiming their safety was compromised at the Ampain AAK II Sports Arena.

The high-tension fixture, played on Sunday, June 1, 2025, was halted in the first half after Nations FC walked off the pitch in protest.

The decision came moments after a second penalty was awarded against them, with the visitors already trailing 1-0 following a 32nd-minute spot kick converted by Holy Stars.

In a post-match statement, Nations FC cited poor officiating and severe lapses in security arrangements as the reasons for their decision to withdraw from the game.

However, the situation has taken an even more serious turn following fresh allegations from the club’s Brands Manager, Kennedy Boakye Ansah.

Speaking on the Luv Sports Blitz Xtra, Ansah accused Basake Holy Stars of orchestrating a hostile and unsafe atmosphere, claiming that armed individuals were transported to the venue using a bus provided by the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

“My biggest disappointment is with the head of the Western Regional Association, who is the owner of Basake. He came to the stadium in a pick-up that was given by the GFA. The bus the GFA gave them when they qualified to the Premier League was the bus that was used to bus the macho men on two occasions into the stadium,” he said.

Ansah further alleged that the men held knives and guns, and as such, the team had to abandon the game.

“The Machomen were holding knives and guns. It was our safety and security officer who saw them. That is why we decided not to play the game. At that point, we realised that those three points would not amount to a life being lost, so the most important thing was that we needed to save our lives. That is why we asked the supporters and players not to play the game,” he added.

The Ghana Football Association have yet to issue an official response regarding the incident. The result of the match, as well as any potential disciplinary action from the GFA’s Disciplinary Committee, remains pending.

Investigations turning into political retribution

0

Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party(NPP), Kwabena Agyapong has raised alarm over what he calls a growing culture of political retribution, following recent actions by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) against former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.

This follows a ‘wanted’ notice reactivated by the Office of the Special Prosecutor for Ken Ofori-Atta.

At a press conference on Monday, June 2, Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng declared that the office had exhausted its patience with Ofori-Atta, citing what it described as persistent delays and failure to comply with ongoing criminal investigations.

“This office has always requested his attendance, and we have indicated clearly to him that we are unwilling to waive it. If we were amenable to taking any statement from Ken Ofori-Atta in absentia, we would have done so in February, and not waited till June 2, 2025.

“We want him here physically, and we insist on it. A suspect in a criminal investigation does not pick and choose how the investigative body conducts its investigations and the methods suitable to him and his convenience. We will not countenance this conduct, not in this case.”

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, Mr. Agyapong reacted to what he described as a ‘public’ prosecution of the former finance minister, saying that such actions blur the lines between legitimate prosecution and political persecution.

“What is happening is becoming a very dangerous cycle of retribution and vengeance, which makes it difficult for people to distinguish what is a proper course of investigation and political prosecution. It has got muddied,” he stated.

In his argument, he stated that with access to all state intelligence and prosecutorial tools, the OSP should focus on building a solid case rather than resorting to public declarations.

“The government has control of all the state security intelligence agencies. If you are building a case against someone, it should be easy with all these institutions available to the government and the attorney general to make the right decision.

“So, if the special prosecutor wants to prosecute someone, you are the prosecutor, and you build your case. After you are done and you believe in the evidence you have gathered, you proceed to court. You are not a judge to declare someone a fugitive, just because you cannot have access to the person,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Frank Davies, a member of the legal team representing former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, in an interview on Citi Eyewitness News on Monday, June 2, emphasised that Mr. Ofori-Atta is not evading justice but is currently unwell and undergoing medical treatment abroad.

“I want to understand that the Special Prosecutor knows what he is doing because the justice delivery system is not to be treated casually, especially when you are dealing with the fundamental human rights of a suspect or an accused person at this stage,” he said

In an Instagram post on Tuesday, the actress extended warm birthday wishes to her ex-husband, publicly acknowledging their separation, which took place in April 2024.

She wrote, “Happy birthday to my ex-husband and my baby daddy. I pray that grace will abound unto you, I pray you find peace in all your ways. May God continue to light your path and bless you beyond your expectations, in Jesus’ name.”

Adebayo also shared the emotional toll the past year has taken on her, admitting that despite maintaining a strong public image, she has endured many nights of quiet sorrow.

“While I go about making other people happy during the day, my pillow is drenched with my own tears almost every night for the past 14 months,” she wrote. “But I gain strength from Christ, who loves me eternally and gave Himself for me.

“Let’s learn to be kind to people; you have no idea what others are going through until they say it. Say unto the righteous, all is well.”

Fans, colleagues, and well-wishers flooded her comment section with supportive messages, praising her courage and maturity in navigating this deeply personal chapter of her life.

Nollywood actress Regina Chukwu wrote, “Biola… it’s well.”

Other comments included heartfelt expressions of sympathy and encouragement, reflecting the public’s admiration for her strength.

In 2023, PUNCH reported that Adebayo explained why she and her husband had a brief courtship before marrying in April 2021. On her YouTube channel, she said, “I realised that we had a lot in common. We did not court for long. We got married in less than six months after we started dating because I knew what I wanted.”

The couple welcomed their first child, a boy, in April 2023 via a surrogate mother.

Finance minister warns SSNIT board against politicians Finance minister warns SSNIT board against politicians

The Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has issued a stern warning to the newly inaugurated Board of Trustees of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), urging them to resist any pressure to sell state assets to politically exposed persons.

Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony in Accra, Dr. Forson cautioned the board to uphold the public interest in all investment decisions and avoid repeating past mistakes that have raised concerns about the stewardship of pension funds.

“Please do not sell state assets to politicians,” the minister said emphatically.

“The President will not accept it, and as your sector Minister, I will be the first to oppose it.”

His comments come at a time when scrutiny has intensified over SSNIT’s investment decisions, including attempts to divest stakes in key national assets. The finance minister stressed that such actions must be guided strictly by value for money, transparency, and the long-term interest of pension contributors.

Dr. Forson reminded the board that SSNIT is a national institution that every Ghanaian worker will depend on during retirement, and therefore, its leadership must be accountable to the public.

“The people of Ghana have entrusted their pension investments into your care. Be mindful that you are investing our future, our monies, and our everything,” he said.

He further encouraged the board to diversify its investment portfolio, noting that SSNIT was “too heavy on real estate” and needed to explore alternative, profitable sectors.

The new Board of Trustees, chaired by Nana Ansah Sasraku III, pledged to manage the Fund’s resources with integrity and foresight.

At just 17, South Africa’s Mongiwa Hazel Ntuli completes actuarial science degree

South Africa’s Mongiwa Hazel Ntuli South Africa’s Mongiwa Hazel Ntuli

South Africa’s Mongiwa Hazel Ntuli has made history as one of the University of Pretoria’s youngest-ever graduates, earning a degree in Actuarial Science. She completed her degree at age 17 at a time when most of her peers were still in high school.

Originally from Rosettenville, Johannesburg, Ntuli began her university studies in 2022 after accelerating through primary and secondary school, the University of Pretoria said on May 28 ahead of her graduation.

“When I was in Grade 3, I mistakenly wrote a Grade 4 mathematics paper and scored the highest of all the actual Grade 4 students,” Ntuli said of how her academic talents were recognised early. “My teacher identified this and allowed me to write more Grade 4 papers, and saw that I performed exceptionally well.”

By 2022, Ntuli had enrolled at the University of Pretoria after an amazing academic leap that placed her ahead of her peers. Despite Ntuli’s brilliance, being younger than her classmates came with its own challenges.

“Many students treated me like the little sister they never had,” she said. “There were a lot of expectations of me, and it got difficult to meet those expectations.”

Ntuli however succeeded thanks to the support of lecturers, friends, and mentors including her house mother, Zamile, her departmental mentor Refilwe Lehobo, and the Vice-Chancellor’s Distinguished Merit Awards team.

“I always reminded myself of why I’d started, and made sure that my ‘why’ was strong enough,” she said.

“Having multiple vision boards kept me on track, and of course, prayer.”

Ntuli is now the first in her family to graduate from university. “My parents will have their much-deserved bragging rights,” she said. “It will alleviate a lot of pressure and burdens that my family has been carrying for so long.”

Ntuli is currently pursuing an honours degree and has no plans to slow down.

“After this, I’m planning to both work and further my studies. I’ve always wanted an MBA.”

Looking ahead, she also hopes to qualify as an actuary and enter the business world.

This is her advice to young people who would like to follow in her footsteps: “Be teachable. You don’t know everything. Learn how to fail forward. Take your losses, mix them up with perseverance and grit. Be like a baby when taking on a challenge – ready to receive all the knowledge and wisdom you can.”

You’ve blocked me and so what? – Appiah-Kubi questions Gary Nimako

0

Andy Appiah-Kubi, lead counsel for Ashanti Regional New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, says he is unperturbed by the decision of the Director of Legal Affairs, Gary Nimako, to block his phone number.

In an interview on Adom News, Mr Appiah-Kubi dismissed the significance of Mr Nimako’s action, stating that he has no interest in maintaining personal communication with him.

“He is not someone I call. I don’t need his chats for anything. If he has blocked me, so what?” he said firmly.

Mr Nimako, who is also a lawyer, had accused Mr Appiah-Kubi of throwing him under the bus.

He made the disclosure on Asempa FM’s , expressing concern over Mr Appiah-Kubi’s public claim that he was unaware of a variation application Mr Nimako had filed, which allegedly frustrated the bail process for Chairman Wontumi.

However, Appiah-Kubi admitted that Mr Nimako had previously called to criticise him for not communicating a key decision beforehand.

“He did not inform me that he was going to take another decision,” he stated, adding, “I am a senior to him, and he should take his time.”

Quoting Proverbs 4:7, the former Asante Akyem North MP emphasised the importance of wisdom and understanding in professional and personal conduct.

“Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting, get understanding,” he said, stressing that there is no basis for comparison between the two of them in terms of academic qualifications.

“He cannot challenge me on my academic affairs. I can publicly advertise my results and let him come and publish his own. He is not someone I call. In fact, he would rather call me. He should never call me,” he declared.

Wontumi visits NPP head office after release, expresses gratitude to party supporters

0

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, made a dramatic appearance at the party’s national headquarters in Accra on Tuesday, June 3, a day after his release from brief detention.

Wontumi was released from the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) after successfully meeting his bail conditions.

Wontumi, who spent a week in detention, was greeted by scores of jubilant supporters as he arrived at the premises, where he publicly expressed his appreciation to the party leadership and grassroots members for their unwavering support during his time in custody.

Contrary to his earlier appearance on the day of his release, where observers said he was unwell, Wontumi, in all-white apparel, was beaming with smiles and exchanging pleasantries.

He even raised one of his legs to prove that he was okay, although he limped on the day of his release.

In an address, Chairman Wontumi singled out the NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, for special appreciation, praising his leadership throughout his ordeal.

“I had to come and show how grateful I am. May God bless you. Everything will be fine,” Wontumi said.

Chairman Wontumi was granted bail to the tune of GH₵50 million with two sureties to be justified following his arrest on Tuesday, May 27, in connection with ongoing investigations into alleged fraud and money laundering.

It is not clear yet when the government will conclude investigations into the allegations and bring charges against the NPP firebrand.

UN Peacekeeper Day: Championing Partnership, Shaping a Peaceful Future

0

UN Peace Keeper

The International Day of UN Peacekeepers is an annual observance dedicated to honoring all men and women who have served and continue to serve in United Nations peacekeeping operations.

It acknowledges their high level of professionalism, unwavering dedication, and profound courage, and pays solemn tribute to the memory of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the cause of peace.

The first UN peacekeeping mission, the UN Truce Supervision Organization, began operations in Palestine on 29 May 1948. In 2002, the UN General Assembly, in its resolution 57/129, designated 29 May as the International Day of UN Peacekeepers.

Since then, UN offices, alongside Member States and non-governmental organizations, have held solemn ceremonies to honor the service and sacrifice of peacekeepers.

Over the years, more than two million peacekeepers have served with unwavering commitment to guiding war-torn societies toward peace.

Today, over 76,000 military and police personnel from around the world serve in 11 UN missions, working to uphold security, dignity, and hope amid global crises, ranging from terrorism and climate change to displacement and human rights challenges.

Ghana is the 7th largest contributor of uniformed personnel to UN Peacekeeping.

It currently deploys more than 2,600 military and police personnel to the UN peace operations in Abyei, the Central African Republic, Cyprus, Lebanon, the Middle East, Somalia, South Sudan, West Africa, Western Sahara, and Yemen.

This year, Peacekeepers Day in Ghana is on the theme: “The Future of Peacekeeping: Strengthening Partnership and Multilateralism in Ghana and Beyond,” signaling a forward-looking approach to tackling evolving global challenges.

It also suggests that for UN peacekeeping to be successful in addressing future global conflicts, member states must improve and deepen collaboration between all relevant actors (partnerships) and reaffirm their commitment to countries working together through established international frameworks (multilateralism).

Indeed, Ghana serves as a notable example of these principles in action. Ghana has a proud and longstanding legacy of contributing personnel to UN peacekeeping operations, spanning troops, police, immigration, and prison officers, since the late 1960s.

This enduring commitment reflects Ghana’s deep-rooted dedication to multilateralism and international partnership.

Ghana was among the first nations to respond to the UN’s call for peacekeeping forces in the Congo, deploying troops just 48 hours after the Security Council passed the resolution establishing the mission.

In 2004, Ghana further demonstrated its leadership in peacekeeping by establishing the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre, a key institution for sharing Ghana’s decades of experience and learning from the expertise of other nations.

Ghana’s active role in UN peacekeeping extends to championing the participation and leadership of women in peace operations.

Ghanaian women peacekeepers have not only increased their representation in missions but have also achieved historic milestones.

Notable examples include Captain Cecilia Erzuah, who received the 2022 UN Gender Advocate Award; Major General Anita Asmah, currently serving as Force Commander of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) in Syria.

Others are the late Brigadier General Edjeani-Afenu, who served as Deputy Force Commander of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), Commodore Faustina Boakyewaa Anokye, who served as Deputy Force Commander of MINURSO.

Continuing this tradition of excellence, the United Nations has named Squadron Leader Sharon Mwinsote Syme of Ghana the 2024 Military Gender Advocate of the Year, as announced in a recent UN press release.

These female peacekeepers, the thousands of peacekeepers before them, and those still serving have earned global respect for their professionalism and dedication. Ghana’s story will undoubtedly serve as an inspiring example during the upcoming observances taking place all Over the world.

Sadly, where the UN flag was once a symbol of security, it now risks making peacekeepers a target, some killed in hostile incidents.

The evolving nature of these conflicts demands innovative solutions and, crucially, strengthened alliances.

This involves renewed commitment to collaboration between member states, the United Nations, regional organizations like the African Union and ECOWAS, and a diverse range of stakeholders, including civil society and local communities.

Insights from the “Future of Peacekeeping” report will likely underscore the need for more proactive, responsive operations, embracing technology, enhancing communication, and ensuring inclusive participation, especially by women.

Beyond ending conflict, peace operations play a vital role in protecting vulnerable populations, rebuilding institutions, restoring the rule of law, and supporting demo cracy, foundations for lasting development and human potential.

On May 29th, we call for renewed global commitment, urging nations to invest in both political will and the resources needed to support brave peacekeepers.

It is a moment to reaffirm our collective resolve to pursue a future where partnership and multilateralism lead the way to enduring peace, from Ghana to every corner of the world.

Wontumi is faking stroke for sympathy – Dr Anabah calls for accountability

Member of Parliament for Garu, Dr Thomas Anabah
Member of Parliament for Garu, Dr Thomas Anabah

The Member of Parliament for Garu, Dr Thomas Anabah, has strongly criticized the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, accusing him of feigning illness to evade justice.

Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana and monitored by GhanaWeb, Dr Anabah dismissed claims that Wontumi had suffered a stroke following his recent arrest.

“Wontumi has proven to be someone who believes the country belongs to him. Now, after a common arrest, he’s suddenly limping. He hasn’t seen anything yet,” Dr Anabah said, insisting that the NPP regional chairman must be held accountable for his alleged illegal mining activities and environmental destruction.

Images from Wontumi’s mining sites, which have sparked public outrage, were described by Dr Anabah as clear evidence of “environmental devastation,” reducing forests to the level of the Sahara.

He emphasised that such acts must not be overlooked simply because of political influence.

The Garu MP further warned against behind-the-scenes political negotiations aimed at shielding Wontumi.

“There shouldn’t be any sympathy. There is no stroke in him. He’s just pretending,” he claimed, referencing public appearances where Wontumi appeared physically well shortly after his alleged hospital admission.

He concluded by urging law enforcement agencies to take legal action and retrieve funds from Wontumi if corruption or illegal gains are proven against him.

“Let’s take him to court and retrieve the money. We need that money,” he added.

Ghanaian musicians who have had prison encounters

0

The lives of musicians may often seem glamorous and carefree, but behind the fame and flashing lights, they are human like everyone else.

Fame does not exempt them from the law, when they break it, they face the same legal consequences as any ordinary citizen.

Over the years, several Ghanaian musicians have found themselves on the wrong side of the law, resulting in arrests, court cases, and even prison time.

Below, let’s take a look at some well-known Ghanaian musicians who have served jail time for various offenses:

Gemann

Nana Kwasi Agyemang, popularly known as Gemann, was once a celebrated musician and dancer in Ghana.

However, his life took a tragic turn in 1995 when he shot and killed a taxi driver during an altercation.

He was sentenced to death by hanging but later had his sentence commuted. After serving 14 years in prison, Gemann was granted a presidential pardon in 2009. Following his release, he turned his life around and is now a pastor.

Kwaw Kese

In 2014, rapper Kwaw Kese was arrested in Kumasi for publicly smoking a substance believed to be Indian hemp.

He spent time at the Kumasi Central Prison before being granted bail.

Eventually, the court sentenced him to one day in jail and imposed a fine of GH₵1,200, which he paid.

Though his jail time was brief, the incident was a major talking point in the media and marked a significant moment in his life.

Showboy

Sam Safo, known in music circles as Showboy, was sentenced to six years in prison in the United States for his role in a violent altercation in 2016.

During a fight in an apartment in Lawrenceville, Georgia, Showboy was caught on video stabbing the victim multiple times, in the chest, armpit, and behind the ear, and biting his face.

He was convicted of aggravated battery by the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office.

After serving his sentence, Showboy was released in 2023 and deported to Ghana.

Medikal

Rapper Medikal, born Samuel Adu Frimpong, faced legal trouble in October 2021 after he posted a video on Snapchat showing a Ruger 9mm pistol while sitting in his car.

He was arrested and charged with the unlawful display of arms and ammunition. Medikal was remanded into prison custody for five days before being released.

Shatta Wale

In October 2021, dancehall artiste Shatta Wale was arrested for spreading false news about his own death, claiming he had been shot.

This claim, according to the police was said to have intended to cause fear and panic.

Shatta was held in custody for a week before being granted bail. Later, he pleaded guilty to publishing false information and was fined GH₵2,000.

Mona4Reall

Ghanaian socialite and musician Mona Montrage, popularly known as Mona4Reall, was arrested in the UK in November 2022 in connection with an $8 million romance scam.

She pleaded guilty in February 2024 to conspiring to receive stolen funds, with reports indicating that over $2 million in fraudulent proceeds had passed through her accounts.

On June 28, 2024, Mona4Reall was sentenced to 12 months and one day in prison, along with three years of supervised release. She completed her sentence and was released on May 22, 2025.

Ghana’s gold production to surge 6.25%

0

Ghana’s gold production is poised for a significant increase in 2025, with the Ghana Chamber of Mines projecting a 6.25 per cent growth to approximately 5.1 million ounces.

This upward trend is driven largely by increased production from artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) operations and the entry of new large-scale mines, which have collectively offset declining output from mature assets.

According to the chamber’s latest annual report, gold output surged by 19.3 per cent in 2024, solidifying Ghana’s position as Africa’s top gold producer, ahead of South Africa and Mali.

The report forecasts gold output to range between 4.4 and 5.1 million ounces in 2025, buoyed by increased contributions from Newmont’s Ahafo South Mine and Shandong’s Namdini Mine.

Small-scale mining

Small-scale miners played a crucial role in Ghana’s gold production in 2024, accounting for a record 39.4 per cent of total gold production. The chamber forecasts small-scale production to range between 1.5 million and two million ounces in 2025, compared to 1.9 million ounces in 2024.

To support artisanal producers and address potential regulatory disruptions, the government has introduced initiatives such as the GoldBod programme to formalise gold purchases and curb smuggling.

Challenges ahead

Despite the positive outlook, several key mines are expected to experience output declines, including Perseus’ Edikan Mine, Gold Fields’ Tarkwa and Damang operations and Zijin’s Akyem Mine. The chamber cautions that Ghana needs to strengthen its pipeline of exploration projects to sustain long-term production.

Positive outlook

Beyond gold, the chamber forecasts a positive outlook for other mineral exports. Manganese production is expected to rise to 8 million tonnes in 2025 from 5 million tonnes in 2024, while bauxite output is projected to increase to 2 million tonnes from 1.7 million tonnes. Diamond production is set to rise to 400,000 carats from 330,000 carats last year.

LatexFoamPromo

The growth in mineral production is expected to have a positive impact on Ghana’s economy, with rising global prices for precious metals and increased production volumes improving export earnings and supporting the cedi’s stability.

This, in turn, will provide a boost to the country’s ongoing economic recovery.

The country’s gold production is set to surge in 2025, driven by increased production from small-scale mining operations and new large-scale mines.

While challenges lie ahead, the country’s mineral sector is poised for growth, with a positive outlook for gold and other minerals expected to drive economic benefits and support the country’s economic recovery.

Newly recruited Jurors defy strike directive, sit in Abesim murder trial

0

Some newly recruited jurors have joined proceedings at Criminal Court 1 of the High Court in Accra, despite an ongoing strike by their senior counterparts over unpaid allowances, Citi News can confirm.

According to Citi News sources, the jurors are reportedly newly recruited and were engaged less than a month ago to strengthen the existing panel and address gaps in the judicial system.

The jurors present on Tuesday, June 3, sat through the high-profile case involving the alleged murder of two children in Abesim, Bono Region, in 2021.

Jurors at the Accra High Court announced the withdrawal of their services effective Monday, June 2, citing the non-payment of their allowances for the past eight months.

According to the group, several attempts to retrieve their payments have yielded no results. Despite formally notifying the Acting Chief Justice of their intended absence, they said they have not received any concrete assurance regarding when the arrears will be settled.

In an interview with Citi News on Tuesday, June 3, one of the striking jurors, Joshua Alorgbey, maintained that their return to duty hinges on a satisfactory response from the authorities.

“Because they know what they are doing, while recruiting new jurors secretly from us, they separated them from our main platform so they wouldn’t know the reality of what is happening at the court.

“As we speak now, the new ones are also agitating about what is happening, asking whether they will be treated the same way the others are being treated.

“You cannot be coming there with your own money. So the new jurors, as we speak now, we will hear from them also. The treatment they are giving us is very unfair,” he added.

President of the GCM, Michael Edem Akafia, disclosed this at the 97th Annual General Meeting in Accra. He said the increase in total gold output was primarily driven by a significant rise in attributable production from small-scale gold miners.

He stated, “The small-scale gold sector recorded a 70.1% increase in attributable output, from 1.1 million ounces in 2023 to 1.9 million ounces in 2024 – the second-highest level since the sector’s formalisation.”

He also reported that manganese production surged by 66.9%, bauxite by 76.5%, and diamond exports rose by 63.9%. These increases were similarly driven by the small-scale mining sector, which offset near-stagnation in production from large-scale gold producers.

“The contrasting performance led to a decline in the large-scale sector’s contribution to national gold output – from 72.3% in 2023 to 60.6% in 2024. Conversely, the share of the small-scale gold sector rose from 27.7% to 39.4% over the same period,” he added.

He noted that members of the Chamber of Mines accounted for 59.4% of national gold output, with mineral revenue rising by 19.8% to US$7.1 billion year-on-year.

He attributed the modest overall growth to the pause in operations at Future Global Resources’ Bogoso Mine and widespread declines across most large-scale producers.

He also mentioned that output from large-scale mines not affiliated with the Chamber fell by 8.3%, dropping from 60,419 ounces in 2023 to 55,425 ounces in 2024.

The Chamber added that, apart from a few mining companies, nearly all other operations recorded year-on-year declines in output due to production-related inefficiencies.

“On the other hand, the output growth of the small-scale gold sector was due to a combination of supportive government policies and favourable price dynamics,” he noted.

Acting Chief Executive of the Chamber of Mines, Ahmed Nantogmah, urged the government to continue prioritizing policy credibility and consistency. He cautioned that sudden changes in fiscal regimes, licensing processes, or regulatory requirements create uncertainty for investors and reduce Ghana’s attractiveness as a mining destination.

He assured the public of the Chamber’s commitment to working toward a consultative, transparent, and predictable policy environment that honours the sanctity of contracts and supports long-term planning and investment. He also called on the government to be transparent in the management and utilization of mineral resources.

State submits witness statements in GH¢49m fraud case against Adu Boahene

0

The State has filed witness statements in the ongoing prosecution of the former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), Kwabena Adu-Boahen, his wife Angela Adjei-Boateng, their associate Mildred Boateng, and their jointly owned company, Adantage Solutions Limited.

The four are standing trial for multiple counts including stealing, causing financial loss to the state, and conspiracy.

Citi News has sighted three of the witness statements submitted to the court. These statements were made by lead investigator Frank Marshall Cromwell, Director of Finance at the NSB Edith Ruby Opokua Adumua, and Frank Anane Dekpey, a self-described errand assistant to the accused persons.

According to the statement by Cromwell, the accused persons conspired to divert GH¢49.1 million in state funds under the pretense of purchasing a cybersecurity defense system. He noted that investigations revealed the scheme was masterminded by Adu-Boahen (referred to as A1), who colluded with his wife (A2), their associate (A3), and a private company (A4).

Cromwell stated that A1, acting in his capacity as Director of the Bureau of National Communications (BNC), signed a contract with Israeli firm ISC Holdings Limited on January 30, 2020, for the supply of a cyber defense system valued at US$7 million—equivalent to GH¢49.1 million at the time. The amount was drawn from a government account at Fidelity Bank and transferred via three cheques labeled “BNC Operations” into an account at UMB Bank. That account, named “BNC Communications Bureau – Operations,” was allegedly controlled by A1 and A2.

However, only GH¢9.5 million of the funds was actually transferred to ISC Holdings, Cromwell said. He further revealed that on March 2, 2023, A1 and A2 co-signed a letter instructing UMB Bank to close all accounts held in the name of BNC Communications Bureau Limited and to transfer the remaining funds to another account owned by A4.

In her testimony, Edith Ruby Adumua, Director of Finance at the NSB, corroborated several aspects of the financial transactions. She explained that the Bureau operated three main bank accounts: two at the Bank of Ghana—“Bureau of National Communications” and “BNC 2”—and one at Fidelity Bank titled “The Director BNC.”

These accounts were signed by the then National Security Coordinator, the late Joshua Kyeremeh, A1, and the Director of Finance at the Ministry of National Security, Mr. Seth Kwadwo Danso. While the main account followed a rigorous approval process involving documentation and audit verification, the operational accounts were under the direct control of A1 and oversight of the National Security Coordinator.

Ms. Adumua recounted how A1 would verbally instruct her to prepare cheques, which he and the late Kyeremeh would then sign. She specifically cited an incident on February 6, 2020, when she was instructed to issue a GH¢27.1 million cheque payable to “BNC Operations.” Believing it to be an official Bureau transaction, she later discovered the money was deposited into a UMB Bank account belonging to a private company allegedly owned by A1 and his wife. Additional cheques totaling GH¢22 million were also issued under similar instructions and deposited into the same private account.

She noted that while she had concerns over these irregular transactions, she felt restricted by the NSB’s rigid “need-to-know” protocols. She added, however, that she had seen a US$7 million invoice from ISC Holdings and confirmed that US$3.11 million was paid from the Fidelity Bank account to the company—although she emphasized that this transaction was unrelated to the charges currently before the court.

The third witness, Frank Anane Dekpey, a church member of A1 and a self-described errand assistant, provided further insight into the alleged financial scheme. Dekpey testified that he frequently carried out cash withdrawals and deposits at UMB Bank and Stanbic Bank on the instructions of A3. He said he typically delivered the funds to A1’s office in Labone, near Metro TV.

Dekpey added that he was rarely informed of the amounts involved, as the cheques were sealed in envelopes and bank staff were pre-informed of his arrival. He revealed that he often used large “Ghana Must Go” bags to transport the cash and was required to sign and provide his contact details at the banks. However, he claimed he never knew the exact sums he handled.

Proper state arrangements must be made for Ghanaian pilgrims

Chairman of the Chieftaincy, Culture, and Religious Affairs Committee, Dr Fred Kyei Asamoah Chairman of the Chieftaincy, Culture, and Religious Affairs Committee, Dr Fred Kyei Asamoah

The Chairman of the Chieftaincy, Culture, and Religious Affairs Committee of Parliament, who also serves as the MP for Offinso North, Dr Fred Kyei Asamoah, has appealed to the state and the president to consider taking responsibility for the travel arrangements of various religious bodies, particularly Christians and Muslims, during their pilgrimage seasons.

He explained that 71.3% and 19.9% of the country’s population are Christians and Muslims, respectively.

This, he noted, clearly indicates that the country is largely religious, and there is a need for the authorities to prioritize arrangements for travel outside the country to ensure absolute peace and safety for citizens embarking on these journeys.

Dr Kyei Asamoah expressed his satisfaction with the existing arrangements for Muslims traveling to Mecca to pray for themselves and the country at large but believes these arrangements could be improved to prevent unfortunate incidents, as reported in the media.

He emphasized that such state travel arrangements should also include Christians traveling to Israel for a peaceful and safe journey to and from these pilgrimage destinations.

The committee chair, Dr Fred Kyei Asamoah, speaking to the media in Parliament, concluded that his committee will engage the Hajj Board for a proper briefing and inquire about what happened during this year’s (2025) travels of Muslim citizens to Mecca so that appropriate decisions can be made for the country.

Dr Abubakari Sidick Ahmed to be honoured with grand retirement celebration

Dr Abubakari Sidick Ahmed has dedicated over two decades to building talents at Radio Univers Dr Abubakari Sidick Ahmed has dedicated over two decades to building talents at Radio Univers

A group of past volunteers of Radio Univers, the University of Ghana’s campus-based radio station, is set to honour the station’s long-serving manager, Dr Abubakari Sidick Ahmed, with a grand retirement celebration on Friday, June 6, 2025.

The event, themed “The Touchdown”, will take place at the Great Hall of the University of Ghana at 6:00 PM, and is strictly by invitation.

It will bring together dignitaries, mentees, colleagues, friends, and family — all united by one purpose: to celebrate a man whose leadership and mentorship have shaped countless lives in Ghana’s media space and beyond.

Affectionately known as Alhaji, Dr Sidick Ahmed has served at Radio Univers for over two decades, rising from a student reporter to Station Manager.

Throughout his journey, he has nurtured talent, built confidence, and transformed Radio Univers into a respected training ground for young broadcasters.

Speaking ahead of the event, Albert Quashigah, Esq, Chairperson of the Central Planning Committee, reflected on the purpose and emotion behind the celebration:

“When people, despite the odds, dedicate themselves to influencing their communities as did Alhaji, we, those he directly impacted, have to recognise him, while it is still possible.

“We, volunteers old and new, do not believe in deferring this. We either do it now or we lose the opportunity. Under his embracing arms, we learnt, built our confidence,” he added.

Lawyer Quashigah concluded his remarks by expressing deep appreciation for the team and reflecting on the broader significance of the occasion. According to him, “It is an honour to be part of this planning and to be the Central Planning Committee Chair.”

“This single act of recognition would encourage others to shine in their respective little or big corners. My sincerest gratitude to the 16-member planning committee that worked tirelessly to make this day possible.”

As the curtain draws on an era, The Touchdown promises not just to mark a retirement, but to enshrine a legacy — that of a mentor, visionary, and selfless servant whose impact will echo far beyond the walls of Radio Univers.

Military air strike kills at least 20 people in northwest Nigeria

A military air strike in northwest Nigeria has killed at least 20 people, according to the military and local residents, prompting calls from human rights groups for an investigation into the attack.

The strike occurred over the weekend in Zamfara state, one of the regions worst worst-affected by violence from armed groups, commonly referred to as “bandits”.

Nigerian Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame said the strike followed intelligence that “a significant number of terrorists were massing and preparing to strike unsuspecting settlements”.

“Further intelligence confirmed that the bandits had killed some farmers and abducted a number of civilians, including women and children,” Ejodame said in a statement, adding that two local vigilantes were killed and two others injured in the crossfire.

However, according to residents cited by the AFP news agency, a group of local vigilantes pursuing a gang was mistakenly bombed by a Nigerian military jet.

The air force had been called in by villagers who had suffered an attack earlier in the weekend. Locals said an unknown number of people were also wounded in the strike.

“We were hit by double tragedy on Saturday,” said Buhari Dangulbi, a resident of the affected area. “Dozens of our people and several cows were taken by bandits, and those who trailed the bandits to rescue them were attacked by a fighter jet. It killed 20 of them.”

Residents told AFP that the bandits had earlier attacked the villages of Mani and Wabi in Maru district, stealing cattle and abducting several people. In response, vigilantes launched a pursuit to recover the captives and stolen livestock.

“The military aircraft arrived and started firing, killing at least 20 of our people,” Abdullahi Ali, a Mani resident and member of a local hunters’ militia, told the Reuters news agency.

Another resident, Ishiye Kabiru, said: “Our vigilantes from Maraya and nearby communities gathered and went after the bandits. Unfortunately, a military jet struck them.”

Alka Tanimu, also from the area, added: “We will still have to pay to get those kidnapped back, while the cows are gone for good.”

Amnesty International condemned the strike and urged a full investigation.

“Attacks by bandits clearly warrant a response from the state, but to launch reckless air strikes into villages – again and again – is absolutely unlawful,” the rights group said.

Nigeria’s military has previously acknowledged mistakenly hitting civilians during air operations targeting armed gangs.

In January, at least 16 vigilantes were killed in a similar strike in Zamfara’s Zurmi district.

In December 2022, more than 100 civilians were killed in Mutunji village while pursuing bandits. A year later, an attack on a religious gathering in Kaduna state killed at least 85 people.

President Mahama assures Otumfuo/Asanteman of more development projects

By Iddi Yire

Accra, June 3, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama has assured the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and Asanteman of more development projects.

The President said his vision for the Ashanti Region was to complete the dualisation of the Accra-Kumasi road and expand all key road infrastructure projects.

Also, the completion of the Afari Military Hospital, the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital Maternity Block and Phase 2 of the Kejetia Market project.

He said feasibility studies would soon be carried out on the dualisation of the Accra-Kumasi Road, and that sod cutting for the construction works would be done early next year.

President Mahama said this during a courtesy call on him by Otumfuo Osei Tutu at the Presidency in Accra.

The Otumfuo with his retinue was at the Presidency to congratulate President Mahama on his election victory in the December 7, 2024, general election and to return the President’s visit to Manhyia within the first two weeks of his assumption of office.

The President said Otumfuo’s presence at the Presidency with his beautiful and large retinue brought to bear the timeless wisdom of the Golden Stool, the integrity of his reign, and the collective dignity of the Asante Kingdom and the entire Chieftaincy Institution.

“We are deeply honoured to welcome you here today. Since your installment in April 1999, Your Majesty has distinguished yourself as a national icon of wisdom, of peace, and visionary leadership,” President Mahama said.

He said during his previous administration, they worked together to build the iconic Kejetia Market Phase 1, and other several satellite markets in the greater Kumasi area.

He said they expanded and upgraded the Kumasi International Airport and that they also started construction of several hospitals in Ashanti, including Sewua and Afari Ministry Hospitals, which sadly were abandoned by the previous administration over the last eight years.

President Mahama said his previous administration constructed several community day senior high schools in various parts of Ashanti, completed the 3K water project, which gave Konongo and Kumawu water, and reconstructed several roads in the Kumasi Metropolitan and surrounding districts.

The President said under the Big Push Infrastructure Programme, they were once again about to start investments in major infrastructural projects across the country.

“And as the second most populous region in Ghana, Ashanti will not be left out. Your Majesty, I’m happy to report to you that we will soon undertake the feasibility study and design of the new Accra-Kumasi Expressway,” the President said.

“We hope to be able to cut the sword early next year for work on this transformational project to commence.”

He told Otumfuo that their intention to continue and complete the Phase 2 of the Kejetia market project, which had been affected by the debt exchange programme.

He said the Government would also commence construction of the Kumasi Outer Ring Road project, a project that takes a road around Kumasi through Ejisu and appears on the Mampongten and Techiman roads.

He said they would start the first quadrant to take big trucks through Ejisu to come out at Mampongten and onto the Techiman road, so that they don’t go through Kumasi City, thereby reducing the volume of traffic in the city.

President Mahama said work would soon start on extending the runway of the Prempeh International Airport in Kumasi to allow bigger wide-bodied aircrafts to land and take off.

He said they would also undertake the Kumasi City traffic improvement programme, which would include completion of the Suame interchange and associated bridges.

On his part, the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu hailed President Mahama for his humility, and he further urged him to keep on being humble.

He urged President Mahama to be bold and to do what he could to fulfill the mandate that the people of Ghana gave him.

Present at the meeting was Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.
