The donation, which was made on Tuesday in Accra, is part of the MP’s pledge to annually support the Christian community, mirroring the support given to the Muslim community.

Govt sued over COP(Rtd) Kofi Boakye’s Police Council appointment

0

A Ghanaian citizen and gender activist, Henritta Nana Yaa Simpson, has invoked the original jurisdiction of the Supreme Court in a lawsuit challenging what she describes as the unconstitutional appointment of COP (Rtd.) Nathan Kofi Boakye to the Police Council.

In the writ filed at the Supreme Court, Ms. Simpson is asking the court to declare the appointment null and void, arguing that the slot designated under Article 201(f) of the 1992 Constitution for a representative of retired senior police officers was illegally filled without recourse to the association’s elected leadership.

She contends that the legitimate nominee of the National Association of Retired Police Officers (NARPO) was ACP (Rtd.) Ms. Florence Arthur, the first female to be elected president of the association. Her nomination, submitted through formal correspondence by her predecessor, was allegedly ignored by the Presidency without acknowledgment or explanation.

Simpson’s suit describes the move as a “naked usurpation” of the Association’s rights and claims it undermines longstanding practice and convention whereby the president of the association automatically represents it on the Police Council. She also alleges the decision to bypass ACP (Rtd.) Florence Arthur may have been influenced by discriminatory views about her rank and gender.

The suit, filed under Articles 2, 130, 17(1), 201, and 296 of the Constitution, seeks multiple declarations, including a clarification that retired senior police officers, as referenced in the Constitution, include those who retired at or above the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police. It also asks the court to rule that the President has no authority to unilaterally appoint a representative for the association without its input.

The plaintiff is further requesting the court to order the removal of Nathan Kofi Boakye from the Council and the installation of ACP (Rtd.) Florence Arthur in his stead.

The suit lists the Police Council and the Attorney-General as co-defendants alongside Mr.  Kofi Boakye, and it argues that the conduct of the Presidency in this matter undermines constitutional principles of consultation, institutional autonomy, and non-discrimination.

Even if you praise Mahama, we will collect our money – Prof Gyampo boldly tells Gabby

Professor Ransford Gyampo, the CEO of the Ghana Shippers Authority, has boldly told Gabby Otchere-Darko, a leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ghanaians will still collect their money even if he praises John Mahama.

He asserted that whether John Mahama is praised or not, stolen government money under the erstwhile Akufo-Addo government will be recovered.

GTEC has treated us unfairly

0

The Tertiary Education Workers’ Union of Ghana (TEWU-GH) has accused the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) of treating them unfairly.

This comes on the heels of GTEC’s decision to recognise the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU-TUC) as the official representative of non-teaching staff on university governing councils.

Speaking on Channel One Newsroom on Tuesday, June 24, the National Chairman of TEWU-GH, Sulemana Abdul Rahaman, noted that the move defies logic and undermines democratic labour representation, given that TEWU-TUC lacks membership in institutions it is now expected to represent.

According to him, GTEC had previously pledged to meet both unions for consultations before any decision on which of the unions that represent the workers would be made. However, the meeting has not taken place.

He demanded the immediate withdrawal of the letter from the GTEC Director-General, calling it premature and disrespectful to the union’s majority standing.

“Just last week, we met with the GTEC and his team, and he promised to engage the two unions on June 25, which is in two days to come. That meeting has not been organised yet, and you went ahead to issue a letter asking our members not to go to the university councils. We see this as very unfair. The GTEC director must withdraw this letter with immediate effect,” he said.

Meanwhile, TEWU-GH has issued a seven-day ultimatum to GTEC to rescind its decision.

UG cautions against fresh resurgence of COVID-19

0

The University of Ghana Health Services Directorate has notified the general public, especially the university community, of the resurgence of COVID-19 after a few suspected and confirmed cases in recent times.

UG noted that these cases have been recorded “in the immediate vicinity” of the university.

In a notice issued on June 23, 2025, it said “all staff, students, and visitors are strongly advised to remain vigilant and strictly adhere to the health protocols to reduce the risk of infection and community spread”.

It also cautioned the community to follow the following guidelines to curb any spread:

1. Wear face masks properly, especially in enclosed or crowded spaces.

2. Wash hands frequently with soap under running water or use alcohol-based hand sanitizers.

3. Maintain physical distancing of at least one metre where possible.

4. Avoid large gatherings unless absolutely necessary.

5. Ensure good ventilation in offices, lecture halls, and meeting rooms.

6. Stay at home if you experience any flu-like symptoms and seek prompt medical attention.

The Health Services Directorate said it has reactivated its COVID-19 Response Protocols, including screening and triage measures at health facilities.

“We are also monitoring the situation closely and will provide regular updates,” it said.

We’re ready to call off strike if govt pays allowances

0

The National Chairman of the Public Services Workers’ Union (PSWU), Ken Tweneboah Koduah, has disclosed that the union is ready to call off its ongoing indefinite strike if the government takes steps to restore and pay all outstanding allowances.

The industrial action, which began on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, has disrupted operations at regional, district, and premium centres of the National Identification Authority (NIA), leaving many of them deserted and halting all NIA-related services across the country.

In an interview with Citi News on June 24, Mr. Koduah stressed that the strike will be suspended once the government shows commitment by rectifying the issue and providing a clear payment timeline.

“Their allowance must be restored. The government must give direction. If he is not ready to restore today, when does he intend to restore it? If the government is talking about budget constraint, the mid-year review is just a few months away, the government must show commitment because what has happened is an error, and the poor worker should not suffer for the error”, he said.

Kwame Dadzie: Why Creative Arts Federation of Ghana is a needless formation

0

On 6th June 2025, a new body called the Creative Arts Federation of Ghana (CAFOG) was inaugurated at the National Theatre in Accra.

This federation is said to be a coming together of all associations, unions and guilds within the seven economic sectors of Ghana’s creative industry: film, fashion, music, performing arts, visual arts, literary arts and media.

According to its President, Richard Yaw Boateng, CAFOG was formed on 13th May 2020 in Accra. After five years of groundwork, a Governing Board has now been constituted, with executives duly elected.

“The vision of the Federation,” Richard explains, “is to unify all the stakeholder associations, unions and guilds in the creative arts industry in Ghana to form an apex or umbrella body to foster the development and prosperity of the creative arts industry.”

The Board comprises the three Executive members: President, Vice President and Secretary General, and two representatives from each of the seven domains of the creative sector. The elected Executives are Richard Yaw Boateng as President, David Dontoh as Vice President and Lilian Sally Addo as Secretary General.

Each of the seven domains also has its own committee, made up of representatives from the various groups within that domain.

All that sounds nice. But in my honest view, this federation is not needed, and here are my reasons.

Duplication of mandates

Some have argued that since there is the Ghana Tourism Federation (GHATOF) for the tourism sector and the Ghana Culture Forum (GCF) for the culture front, we automatically need a body to represent creatives. But that argument collapses when you consider the composition of the Ghana Culture Forum, which already includes representatives from all the domains that CAFOG now claims to unify.

Here is a snapshot of the current leadership of the Ghana Culture Forum: Nana Otuo Owoahene Acheampong, Chairperson (Visual Arts), Ahuma Bosco Ocansey, Vice-Chairperson (Literary Arts/MUSIGA), Edwina Assan, General Secretary (Visual Arts) and Makeba Boateng Utip, Treasurer (Fashion/Textile).

Others are Samuel Dodoo, Executive Member (Visual Arts/Textiles), Kenneth (Ken) Fiati, Executive Member (Audio-Visual/Actors Guild) and Samuel Gyandoh, Executive Member (Audio-Visual/Film Crew).

Clearly, the Ghana Culture Forum is a cultural representation of the very same creative domains. The misconception that culture is only about traditional rites might be the reason CAFOG’s founders believe creatives need a separate platform. But the arts form part of culture. And the Culture Forum is already doing the job.

In fact, the GCF played a significant role in the review of the Culture Policy, which directly addresses creatives and their work in Ghana’s cultural framework. CAFOG, in this context, is redundant.

Our wanton love for forming associations

We seem to have an uncontrollable urge to form associations, even when we lack the discipline to make them functional. Look around. Apart from the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), which at the very least shows some signs of life, most creative associations in Ghana are either dormant or dead.

Where is the Ghana Actors Guild? How active is the Film Producers Association of Ghana (FIPAG)? How many remember the last time the Film Crew Association of Ghana (FCAG) made a meaningful impact? What about the Ghana Association of Writers (GAW) or the Models Union of Ghana (MODUGA)?

Some may call it a chicken-and-egg situation: do we need a federation first to function, or must we function first to create a federation? To me, it should be a bottom-up approach.

I was even surprised to learn that many of these groups were not consulted before CAFOG was launched. They probably just handpicked individuals they wanted to form part of the sub-committees and went ahead with the inauguration.

Here is an excerpt from a notice circulated by some major industry stakeholders of the creative arts:

“It has come to our notice that Mr. Bessa Simons was not consulted or involved in the formation of this federation. Proper consultation was not done and we question its legitimacy. We, the undersigned – GAFTA, ARSOG, MUSIGA, GAG, Crew Association, Women in Film and Television, FIPAG and the Ghana Culture Forum – wish to dissociate ourselves from this federation and clarify that we are not part of it, despite any claims to the contrary.”

There is nothing inherently wrong with forming associations. But let’s be honest. The Ghana Culture Forum already exists and is doing what CAFOG says it wants to do. Instead of dividing attention and confusing stakeholders, it would be more productive for CAFOG’s leaders to throw their weight behind the existing structure.

Dear CAFOG, I am not being cynical. But the future looks foggy for your venture. For the sake of unity and progress, just support the Ghana Culture Forum and help strengthen what is already in motion.

NPP invites presidential hopefuls, directs cessation of meetings with party executives

0

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is set to meet with all presidential aspirants who have publicly declared their intention to contest the party’s 2026 flagbearer slot, in a bid to address growing tensions and reinforce internal discipline ahead of the primaries.

A statement signed by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, and released on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, noted that the party’s National Steering Committee had resolved to invite all aspirants to a joint meeting with the Steering Committee and the National Council of Elders.

It said the meeting is scheduled for Thursday, July 3, 2025.

According to the statement, the meeting aims to “discuss matters of mutual interest” and ensure unity as the party prepares for the crucial presidential contest.

In a related development, the Steering Committee has referred the Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye, to the National Disciplinary Committee.

Mr Abronye is accused of breaching party directives by making “unguarded public comments,” despite prior warnings from the National Council.

The party has also issued a directive for the immediate cessation of all caucuses or meetings by current or former party executives and government appointees with presidential hopefuls, which it says violates party regulations.

“The Party wishes to once again remind members of their constitutional obligation to protect party unity, to abide by and publicly support the Party’s decisions, and to refrain from engaging in acts that threaten party cohesion,” the statement read.

NPP calls meeting with presidential hopefuls, refers Abronye to disciplinary committee

0

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced plans to convene all declared presidential aspirants for a joint dialogue with the party’s Steering Committee and National Council of Elders on July 3, 2025.

The initiative is aimed at fostering unity and alignment ahead of the party’s presidential primaries.

In a statement issued from its Accra headquarters, the NPP said the meeting will address “matters of mutual interest” among aspirants, amid growing concerns over factionalism and rule breaches within the party.

The statement also revealed disciplinary action against Bono Regional Chairman, Mr. Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye, who has been referred to the National Disciplinary Committee.

He is accused of violating a directive from the National Council by making unguarded public statements.

Additionally, the party directed an immediate halt to all informal caucuses and associations involving current or former executives and government appointees holding meetings with presidential aspirants in defiance of party rules.

General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong reiterated the NPP’s constitutional call for members to uphold unity, support party decisions, and refrain from actions that could threaten internal cohesion.

Parliament grants approval to seven judges despite Minority dissent

0

Despite strong opposition from the Minority caucus, Parliament has confirmed all seven of President John Dramani Mahama’s Supreme Court nominees.

Following a contentious plenary debate and a resounding voice vote, the decision paves the way for the nominees to be formally sworn into the highest court.

The Majority side prevailed after the Appointments Committee’s final report was presented.

The Minority had earlier expressed strong objections to the nominations, arguing that the appointments raised constitutional concerns and were inconsistent with the recent suspension of the Chief Justice.

They also accused the Supreme Court of abdicating its responsibility by remaining silent on recent judicial developments, which they described as violations of natural justice.

“All Minority members opposed and voted against the nomination of the seven judges. Mr. Speaker, based on the meeting we had this afternoon, the recording will show that everyone on the Minority side said ‘no’,” said First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor.

Despite the Minority’s objection, the Majority’s support secured the approval of the nominees.

The newly confirmed justices are:

1. Justice Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei

2. Justice Gbiel Simon Suurbaareh

3. Justice Senyo Dzamefe

4. Justice Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo

5. Justice Philip Bright Mensah

6. Justice Janapare Bartels-Kodwo

7. Justice Hafisata Amaleboba

President Mahama is expected to conduct their swearing-in in the coming days.

NPP Primaries: You can be an old guy, but if you’re incompetent, you won’t win – Asah-Asante

0

Political Scientist, Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante, says competence and a strong understanding of Ghana’s challenges, particularly on the economy, must be the deciding factors in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2026 presidential primaries, not popularity or experience alone.

Speaking on JoyFM’s Top Story on Tuesday, June 24, Dr. Asah-Asante dismissed arguments that a candidate’s longevity or familiarity in the political space gives them an automatic edge.

“You can be an old guy who has contested many times and is well known, but if you are incompetent, you are incompetent,” he stated. “If you don’t have the support of the people, you don’t have them.”

He was responding to the argument made by some within the Bawumia camp that it is easier to market a candidate who has already “tested the waters.”

Dr. Asah-Asante, however, countered that political success is not built on repetition but on relevance, strategy, and credibility.

“What the people want is somebody with the knowledge, with the understanding of the economy and how it works, not any propagandist style of positioning,” he added. “We want people who are the real men and understand the real issues confronting this country.”

He acknowledged that the leading contenders, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong, Dr Bryan Acheampong, and Dr Yaw Adutwum, all bring unique attributes to the race, but ultimately, it is their grasp of Ghana’s problems and ability to propose credible solutions that will determine who emerges victorious.

Dr. Asah-Asante also stated that records, strategy, and messaging that resonate with the electorate will be the major factors that “separate the chaff from the real input.”

NPP summons flagbearer hopefuls, disciplines Bono Chairman over “unguarded comments”

The decisions were announced in a statement dated June 24, 2025, by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong following a National Steering Committee meeting on Tuesday.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has summoned all flagbearer aspirants for a crucial meeting on July 3, 2025, while referring its Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe (alias Abronye), to the disciplinary committee for violating party directives.

Supreme Court vetting report approved despite Minority pushback

0

Parliament has approved the controversial Supreme Court vetting report, paving the way for the confirmation of President John Mahama’s judicial nominees, despite strong objections from the Minority caucus.

The decision came after a heated debate and a decisive voice vote that saw the Majority carry the day.

Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, mounted a spirited opposition to the report, arguing that the Majority was prioritising “political convenience over constitutional principle.”

He warned that the move could set a dangerous precedent for future judicial appointments.

Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, countered these claims, insisting that all seven nominees were thoroughly vetted and found competent to serve on the nation’s highest court.

Speaker Alban Bagbin had earlier ruled that the Appointments Committee’s report was properly constituted, dismissing the Minority’s claims that their inputs were excluded.

Speaker Bagbin stressed that parliamentary procedure allows for Minority concerns to be raised during floor debates.

“You will not be prevented from saying what you want to say. But the report captures the decision of the whole committee.”

The session culminated in a voice vote, with the Speaker declaring: “The ayes have it!” before pronouncing the justices duly confirmed.

The ruling clears the path for the new justices to assume their positions on the Supreme Court bench.

The approval follows days of tension after Mr Afenyo-Markin initially blocked the report’s presentation, claiming the Minority had not endorsed it.

The Appointments Committee Chairman, Bernard Ahiafor, had revealed that while the Minority’s comments were incorporated, last-minute demands could not be accommodated.

Journey to the West: A Struggle through Ghana’s deteriorating roads

0

Adjoa A. Amoakwa, the writer, is a student of Achimota SHS

Last weekend, my family and I embarked on what was supposed to be a smooth trip to attend my late grandmother’s memorial service in Winneba. What should have been a straightforward one-and-a-half-hour journey from Sakumono turned into a frustrating three-hour ordeal — all due to the terrible condition of the road from Budumburam to the Ayensu River bridge.

Our vehicle, a Land Cruiser, bounced violently over deep potholes and makeshift gutters. At several points, we were forced to slow down to a walking pace. On two occasions, we even had to turn around and approach the oncoming lane, improvising with different driving tactics just to move forward.

The stretch from Budumburam to Winneba is currently under reconstruction — which, in theory, should be a step in the right direction.

Unfortunately, the situation on the ground tells a different story. There were no road signs to direct traffic, no visible indicators showing which routes to avoid or follow. Drivers were left to navigate blindly, creating confusion and congestion.

Even Google Maps, which we relied on for real-time directions, was unaware of the recent roadblocks. It continued to guide us along paths that were either inaccessible or completely blocked by construction trucks and heaps of sand. With no accurate information available, we had no choice but to depend on instinct and observation — and in some cases, sheer luck.

We hit that stretch of road at around 3:45 a.m., only to be caught in an unbelievable traffic jam caused by long-haul trucks and buses.

To make matters worse, it had rained earlier that night, worsening already treacherous road conditions. At one point, we were forced to divert through narrow roads in nearby settlements, as the main route was entirely obstructed.

Beyond the physical discomfort and risk of vehicle damage, the psychological stress was overwhelming. It was heartbreaking to see drivers of commercial vehicles stranded, arguing in frustration as nothing moved. Everyone was simply trying to make it through.

The state of the road is more than a personal inconvenience — it is a serious public safety and economic issue. Traders lament the loss of business. Parents fear sending their children to school through such dangerous routes. Health workers face delays in reaching those in need. These ripple effects stretch far and wide.

This situation demands immediate and serious attention from our leaders and the Ministry of Roads and Highways. Road travel remains the dominant means of transportation in Ghana, and when major routes like this become nearly impassable, entire communities suffer.

As a concerned citizen, I appeal to the relevant authorities to prioritise the completion of road reconstruction, especially in such critical areas. Travel should be a joy, not a trial. I hope that sharing this experience echoes the voices of many Ghanaians who face similar struggles daily — and spur the action we so urgently need.

Ashanti Regional Minister hails new era for film industry as KAFA is born

Dr Frank Amoakohene is the Ashanti Regional Minister Dr Frank Amoakohene is the Ashanti Regional Minister

A new era for the Ashanti Region’s film industry, popularly known as Kumawood, has begun with the formation of the “Kumawood Ashanti Film Association” (KAFA). The announcement came from Dr Frank Amoakohene, the Ashanti Regional Minister, who oversaw the establishment of the organisation.

The formation of KAFA follows an official report from a committee established by Dr Amoakohene to assess the state of the Kumawood film industry.

The report highlighted the urgent need for a unified, well-structured, and officially recognized body to represent the industry.

“Following the official report, it became clear that there was an urgent need to organize the industry under a single, well-structured, and recognized body,” Dr Amoakohene stated.

In a peaceful and democratic process, various sector players within Kumawood participated in elections to choose their representatives for a new governing board.

The board will be responsible for commissioning a management team to oversee the day-to-day operations of KAFA’s secretariat.

The process was well participated by key actors, directors, crew members, the media amongst others.

Dr Amoakohene expressed his commitment to supporting KAFA in implementing the other recommendations outlined in the assessment report, emphasizing the full backing of both President John Dramani Mahama and the Minister for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Abla Dzifa Gomashie.

“This marks a major step forward in repositioning Kumawood for growth, unity, and sustainability,” Dr Amoakohene affirmed. “I remain committed to supporting them as we work together to implement the other recommendations in the report with the full backing of H.E. the President and the Hon. Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture.”

He concluded with an optimistic outlook for the future of Kumawood, stating, “Kumawood will rise again”.

Dr Yaw Adutwum is the best person to lead NPP to victory in 2028

0

Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum is a former Minister of Education Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum is a former Minister of Education

Former Eastern Regional Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), David Prah, has rallied support for the former Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, describing him as the most competent and visionary leader to take the party forward.

He indicated that Dr Adutwum, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr Bryan Acheampong, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, and other aspirants are all qualified to lead the NPP to victory in 2028.

However, he is rallying support for the former minister to become the presidential candidate for the NPP in 2028 and eventual president of the Republic of Ghana.

He appealed passionately to the NPP delegates to consider Dr Adutwum’s exceptional leadership record, transformative achievements, and global perspective as they weigh their options for the party’s future.

“The New Patriotic Party has reached a turning point. And what we need now is not another career politician, but a man of competence, character, and performance. That man is Yaw Osei Adutwum,” he declared

.

The former Communications Director emphasised that Dr Adutwum’s time at the Ministry of Education was marked by bold and practical reforms that impacted lives across the country.

Under his stewardship, the education sector experienced a renewed focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), with several modern STEM-focused senior high schools constructed nationwide.

“Let’s look at what he did in just a few years. He led the expansion of STEM education across the country. These schools are equipped with robotics, coding labs, and engineering workshops. It wasn’t politics—it was progress.

“He brought energy and focus to a ministry that had become predictable. He introduced STEM boarding schools in underserved communities and rolled out free robotics and coding programs—things never seen before in our public schools,” he noted.

According to Prah, Dr Adutwum’s leadership is grounded not only in experience but also in world-class education and international exposure that few Ghanaian politicians possess.

Before entering public service in Ghana, he founded and served as CEO of the New Designs Educational Group in California, USA—an institution that served thousands of students and employed hundreds of professionals.

“This is a man who built an education system in the US from the ground up. He wasn’t just teaching—he was creating jobs and shaping future leaders,” Prah emphasised.

Highlighting the former minister’s governance approach, he stressed that Dr Adutwum was not the kind of leader to be boxed into Accra offices. Instead, he was known for unannounced school visits to monitor real-time classroom performance.

Beyond policy, Dr Adutwum is recognised for his personal investments in education. According to Prah, he has single-handedly sponsored over 150 students from his Bosomtwe Constituency to pursue engineering and medicine across various universities in Ghana.

His expertise and credibility have earned him international recognition. He is currently the Chairman of the Ghana Commission for UNESCO and a member of the UN High-Level Advisory Group for Mission 4.7, which supports the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Education).

He also serves on the Advisory Board of the Capacity Building Centre at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and is the Patron of the Africa Curriculum Association (ACA).

He holds a PhD in Educational Policy and Administration from the University of Southern California (USC), a Master’s degree in Educational Management from the University of La Verne, and a Teaching Diploma from Chapman University, California.

He is also an alumnus of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

As the New Patriotic Party begins to chart its path toward future elections, David Prah’s early endorsement highlights a growing movement within the party calling for transformational leadership.

With Dr Adutwum’s impeccable credentials, international respect, and grassroots dedication, his name is quickly emerging as one to watch.

Lionel Messi is set to face former club Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup Lionel Messi is set to face former club Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup

Lionel Messi is set for a fated reunion with his former club Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the Club World Cup round of 16, after both teams progressed to the knockout stage on Monday, June 23, 2025.

Inter Miami secured their spot by finishing second in Group A following a 2-2 draw with Palmeiras. The Brazilian side came back from two goals down to top the group.

As a result, Inter Miami will now face an all-Brazilian clash with Botafogo, who finished second in Group B despite a 1-0 loss to Atletico Madrid, eliminating the Spanish side.

Meanwhile, European champions PSG topped their group with a 2-0 victory over Seattle Sounders, setting up a high-profile showdown with Messi and Inter Miami.

Goals from Tadeo Allende and Luis Suárez had put Miami on course for their second win of the tournament, following their shock victory over Porto.

The match will reunite several former Barcelona stars, as Messi, Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba, and Miami head coach Javier Mascherano prepare to face their former coach Luis Enrique, who led them to a historic treble in 2015.

Speaking to beIN Sports on June 24, 2025, Alba said:

“We’re talking about the champions of Europe. We know many of their players and their coach, who I was lucky enough to have. I’ve always said he is the best in the world. I will reconnect with good friends there, but once the game starts, we will compete, try to beat them—and why not? This is football.”

Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano praised the achievement in his post-match interview with beIN Sports on June 23, 2025, saying:

“It is a historic night for MLS because we are among the best 16 teams in the world. All of MLS should be proud of Inter Miami.”

Inter Miami and PSG will face off in their round of 16 fixture on June 29, 2025.

Why Bawumia deserves a second chance – Nana Akomea [Audio]

0

The Vice Chairman of the 2024 Bawumia Campaign Team, Nana Akomea says former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia deserves another opportunity to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

While acknowledging the party’s poor performance in the 2024 general election, Nana Akomea admitted that Dr. Bawumia must bear some responsibility — but insists that should not disqualify him from leading the NPP again.

In an interview on Asempa FM’s , Nana Akomea argued that Dr. Bawumia gave his all during the campaign and deserves a second chance.

“We all worked and supported him to become the presidential candidate through to the general election, and I know the kind of work he did. He toured all 275 constituencies, and I don’t believe any flagbearer has done that,” he said.

“If you don’t work hard, that’s when we say you didn’t perform. But if you give your best and it doesn’t go well, you deserve a second chance,” he added.

The former Managing Director of the State Transport Corporation (STC) also dismissed claims that Dr. Bawumia contributed to the party’s defeat in the 2024 election. Citing the report from the Prof. Mike Oquaye-led review committee, he said the document did not apportion blame to Dr. Bawumia.

His comments come weeks after former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, argued that the NPP does not offer second chances to underperforming candidates. As Dr. Bawumia’s main contender in the 2024 NPP presidential primaries, Kennedy insisted that the party traditionally supports candidates with strong electoral results.

Dr. Bawumia lost the 2024 election to President Mahama, who secured an overwhelming 6,328,397 votes (56.55%) compared to Dr. Bawumia’s 4,657,304 votes (41.61%).

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) not only reclaimed the presidency but also won a commanding majority in Parliament, capturing over 180 seats, including several traditional NPP strongholds.

Since the defeat, the NPP has largely attributed its loss to voter apathy and low turnout among its support base.

Nana Akomea’s appeal adds to the growing internal debate over the party’s leadership direction ahead of the next electoral cycle.

This Is Still One of the Best Sci-Fi Action Movies of All Time (Even Though Its Sequels Failed)

0

Dutch filmmaker Paul Verhoeven did a great job of making a name for himself in Hollywood. With seven films released throughout the course of 15 years, he established a unique voice and type of film that no other director of his time was capable of providing. First was the erotic adventure film Flesh and Blood, starring Rutger Hauer and Jennifer Jason Leigh. But it was after that movie that he would set the true blueprint of what a Verhoeven Hollywood film looked like. That movie would be 1987’s RoboCop, which displayed the ultra-violence and razor-sharp wit that would be as much a trademark of a Verhoeven Hollywood film as Flesh and Blood‘s eroticism. After RoboCop, the director had a few more hits with Total Recall and Basic Instinct, but then he helmed Showgirls, which in spite of its cult following, was rightly deemed a huge misstep at the time.

The production of Verhoeven’s most recent domestic film, Hollow Man, was difficult enough to make him return to Europe. But, while the sci-fi genre was present in that Kevin Bacon-led Invisible Man movie, as were the eroticism and ultra-violence, they were watered down, making it a disappointing Hollywood swan song for Verhoeven. It’s enough to make one wish he had gone out on the film he made between Showgirls and Hollow Man, Starship Troopers, which is about as fantastic a companion piece to RoboCop as he could have made.

What Makes Starship Troopers One of Verhoeven’s Best Films?

casper van dien in starship troopers

As we’ll cover to a more in-depth extent in the next section, Starship Troopers was not a film that was properly appreciated when released in 1997. Some found it dull, others found it gratuitous, more still found it poorly acted, and a surprisingly large number thought it was endorsing fascism.

But the Starship Troopers film is far from an endorsement of fascism. The book it was based on, by Robert A. Heinlein, however, is. Those who grew up with the film who then picked up a copy of the book were in for a severe disappointment and a tough, occasionally upsetting read.

Now, though, people see Verhoeven’s movie as what it is: a scathing indictment of fascism. The fact it manages to feature some truly compelling action sequences while also conveying its message is just a plus.

What Makes Starship Troopers‘ Sequels So Disappointing?

casper van dien in starship troopers 3: marauder

The answer to the question “Why are Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation (2004) and Starship Troopers 3: Marauder (2008) so awful?” is a simple one. Money.

The original Starship Troopers, while fairly well-reviewed by critics and audiences in subsequent decades, simply wasn’t for late ’90s audiences. It was ahead of its time. The movie opened well enough, but poor word of mouth ultimately resulted in steep declines throughout subsequent weeks.

It gained an audience thanks to rentals and home media, but it was still a film produced on a $110 million budget that only netted $121 million. In other words, it didn’t make money. It’s only because of the growing cult following and critical re-evaluation that it received sequels at all. The issue is, given the money loss the first time out, the subsequent films were direct to video. Outside the second Tremors film, it’s hard to imagine a direct to video sequel film that’s serviceable, much less good.

Worse yet, the reason Starship Troopers‘ budget was so high was because it required a major investment in special effects. Direct to video sequels can’t invest a ton of capital into special effects, and it shows. Even with the return of Casper Van Dien’s Johnny Rico in Marauder, there just wasn’t enough on visual display to make the film worth watching. That would be fine if the movie had anything compelling to say, but it didn’t.

That said, Marauder at least somewhat feels like Starship Troopers. Not just because of Van Dien’s return, but also because Hero of the Federation is a perpetually dark (literally), straightforward actioner. Marauder at least attempts to bring some of the satirical edge back. But, as the RoboCop remake showed, it’s mighty hard to replicate Verhoeven’s particular satirical style, even when there’s a budget helping the project pull it off.

SHS students to debate Copyright Issues at 2025 Ghana Book Fair

0

A group photo of Management of GPA and Afram Publications after the balloting session.

“God holds the copyright, as the sole author of life” so says Dr Gift Gugu Mona, a South African poet and Philosopher.

The truism in this quote makes it imperative that every author of any literary work must hold the sole right to the copies.

Also, the message in the above quote underscores the mission of the Ghana Publishers Association (GPA), which is to improve and protect by all lawful means the interest of Ghanaian publishers.

It is in line with this that the leadership of the Ghana Publishers Association (GPA) and Afram Publications Ghana Limited have teamed up to rope the country’s future leaders (students of selected secondary schools) into the fight against copyright infringements.

The task is for representatives of students at the identified schools to debate a copyright-related and two other topics as part of activities marking the 22nd Ghana International Book Fair (GIBF) slated for August 20-23, 2025 at the National Theatre in Accra.

The fair is under the theme: “Inclusive Publishing, Celebrating Accessible Literature.”

The competing schools for the 5th GPA–Afram Publications Inter-Schools’ Debate are; Tema, Okuapeman, Swedru and Winneba Senior High schools.

The objective is not far-fetched. As key stakeholders and future leaders, the debate aims to afford five students (Debaters) from each of the four schools named above, to pitch ideas that would help address the pertinent issues identified in the selected topics.

It is also aimed at building their communication skills as well as giving them an avenue to exchange knowledge. As Board Chairperson of Afram Publications Limited, Professor Esi Sutherland-Addy puts it, “The idea is that we will have well-rounded personalities who are not just passing exams, but who have an interest in a wide range of topics and are able to contribute to society and take action based on strong ethical principles. The idea also is that we need to have a population that appreciates fun and are able to compete fairly and learn to accept both victory and defeat.”

The stage is set

After a balloting session on June 23, 2025, the four schools were grouped into A and B. Swedru Senior High School and Winneba Senior High School found themselves in Group A.

The debaters from these renowned schools are the ones who have been charged with the responsibility of proffering out-of-the-box suggestions to help curb the galamsey menace, which is destroying the environment.

In this regard, the team from Swedru SHS has been given the responsibility to argue against the motion- The devastating effect of illegal mining (galamsey) on the environment is due to non-implementation of appropriate policies, whereas their counterparts from Winneba SHS will argue for the motion.

On the other hand, the debaters from Tema Senior High School and Okuapeman Senior High School, who form Group B, have the mandate to evolve strategies for dealing with indiscipline in schools as they argue respectively, for or against the motion- ‘Indiscipline in schools is a result of deficiencies in the school curriculum. Do you agree with this statement?’

Subsequently, the winning school from Group A will battle it out with the winner from Group B on the main topic- The publishing industry has been adversely affected by the lack of copyright enforcement: Are authors and publishers deserving of copyright protection?

Clearly, it promises to be a battle of brains as representatives of the schools who were present during the balloting were upbeat about the event once the topics were made known.

“We believe the topics selected would influence decision making. As John F. Kennedy (former US President) said, without debate, without criticism no administration and no country can succeed,” the Managing Director of Afram Publications Limited, Ms. Harriet Adelaide Tagoe recalled during the brief but exciting balloting session.

She encouraged all participating schools to “prepare very well, so we can have an interesting and thought-provoking debate on the 20th of August, 2025.”

The reward

Up for grabs are plaques and books for all participating schools, Writing and Reading workshops and desktop computers.

Board Chairperson of Afram Publications, Prof Esi Sutherland-Addy had some words of encouragement for the competing schools.

“We will continue to encourage schools as well as student-led clubs to develop the great skills inherent in debating, because debating requires that you search for knowledge, that you have the ability to analyse this knowledge, that you have the ingenuity of developing an argument, that you are able to work in a team, that you have the ability to participate in healthy competitions,” she noted.

The Chairman of the GIBF Planning Committee and President of the Ghana Publishers Association (GPA), Mr Asare Konadu Yamoah, could not hide his appreciation of the sponsorship offered by Afram Publications Limited for the debate.

He charged the participating schools to “bring this competition to the attention of their old students and rally them around for a successful programme.”

August 20 is barely 2 months away, and the balloting for the 5th GPA-Afram Publications Limited Inter-Schools’ Debate has set the tone for a solution-finding mental battle.

Small-scale miners accuse Anti-Galamsey Taskforce of harassment, equipment seizures

Michael Kwadwo Peprah, President of National Concerned Small Scale Miners Association Michael Kwadwo Peprah, President of National Concerned Small Scale Miners Association

The National Concerned Small Scale Miners Association has expressed concern over what it describes as targeted harassment and the unlawful seizure of equipment by the government’s anti-galamsey taskforce.

In a statement issued by its President, Michael Kwadwo Peprah, on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, the association accused the John Dramani Mahama-led government of engaging in actions that undermine small-scale mining operations in the country.

“We have credible reports that the government’s anti-galamsey taskforce has been engaged in unlawful activities, including the unwarranted seizure and destruction of excavators belonging to our members, many of whom operate within the legal framework,” the statement said.

It further claimed that in several communities, equipment has been forcibly taken from miners’ homes, where the machines were not in active use—an action that raises serious legal and ethical concerns.

“We do not seek favouritism or protection for illegal operations,” Peprah added. “Instead, we advocate for a transparent, inclusive system that allows all legitimate actors in the sector to operate without fear or victimization.”

The association cautioned that the current trajectory risks repeating the failures of the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government’s anti-galamsey campaign, which also faced criticism for human rights violations and lack of transparency.

“The current approach by the NDC administration risks repeating the failed anti-galamsey strategies of the previous NPP government. Harassment and destruction of legally acquired mining equipment are not sustainable solutions to the challenges facing the industry,” the statement noted.

The association further reminded the government of its 2024 campaign pledge to support small-scale miners with modern technology and capacity-building programs to promote responsible and sustainable mining.

“During the 2024 election campaign, the then-opposition NDC made a clear promise to support and equip small-scale miners with modern technology and skills to streamline our operations,” it indicated.

It urged authorities to pursue reforms that enable safe, lawful, and environmentally sound mining rather than resorting to what they describe as “harassment and destruction of legally acquired mining equipment.”

$70,000 Hearts of Oak Debt: ‘We owe Colts club $24,000’

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) imposes a transfer ban on Hearts of Oak The Ghana Football Association (GFA) imposes a transfer ban on Hearts of Oak

The CEO of New Edubiase United, Alex Ackumey, has revealed that out of the $70,000 transfer fee owed by Hearts of Oak for midfielder Salim Adams, $24,000 is due to the Colts club where Adams was developed.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) imposed a transfer ban on Hearts of Oak for failing to pay the full transfer fee to New Edubiase by the May 31, 2025, deadline, as per Article 15(1)(c) of the GFA Disciplinary Code [1].

Speaking to Max FM on June 24, 2025, Ackumey explained the financial breakdown of the $70,000 debt owed by Hearts of Oak.

“We need to pay the Colts club, where we bought the player from. They are taking $24,000 out of the $70,000. We as a club must go and settle that debt,” he decried.

According to JoySports reports on June 24, 2025, he also noted that although Hearts made attempts to resolve the matter, those efforts were deemed unsatisfactory.

Due to the transfer ban, Hearts have been banned from registering new players both locally and internationally until the debt is fully paid.

Continued non-compliance could result in stiffer penalties, including points deduction or even relegation, as outlined in the GFA’s disciplinary regulations.

“Taken Out of Context’ – Boakye-Danquah Responds to Backlash Over Dr. Amoah’s Remarks on NPP’s Loss

0

Former Government Spokesperson on Governance and Security, Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, has defended Nhyiaeso MP Dr. Stephen Amoah, who has faced backlash over alleged comments linking the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) loss in the 2024 general elections to the Muslim identity of their flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as reported by Ghana Web.

Dr. Amoah’s comments, which sparked outrage among NPP members and the Muslim community, were seen as controversial. Some have called for an apology, believing the remarks perpetuate religious bias.

However, Dr. Boakye-Danquah contended that the comments had been taken out of context.

“I was in Kumasi, I was at the programme where Honourable Dr. Stephen Amoah made those comments, and I think that his remarks have been taken out of context, absolutely,” Dr. Boakye-Danquah stated.

He further clarified that the focus should be on the data from the 2024 elections, which indicated that the NPP lost the majority of votes in Zongo communities, areas predominantly inhabited by Muslims.

“In 2024, the NPP’s flagbearer lost all the Zongos across the country except Winneba,” he stated, comparing this with the NPP’s performance in 2020, when President Akufo-Addo, a southerner, had gained significant support from northern and Zongo communities.

Dr. Boakye-Danquah emphasized that such data should guide the party’s future strategies, rather than assumptions about religion.

He also pointed to the NPP’s commitment to inclusivity, citing Dr. Bawumia’s historic nomination as the first Muslim flagbearer in the Fourth Republic.

The police confirmed that the victim has since received medical attention and has been reunited with his father.

Superintendent Olivia E. T. Adiku, Head of the Public Affairs Unit in the Western Region, assured the public of the police’s commitment to public safety and urged citizens to report any suspicious or harmful behaviour to the nearest police station.

In 2021, Catherine revealed both Carys and Dylan are determined to get into acting.

Catherine said on The Drew Barrymore Show: ‘Their love of the craft of acting is so strong that even when their brains are doing politics and history in school, their passion is acting.

‘And they’ve never done anything professional, but they would like to go into acting.’

Carys has even been warned by her father that if she pursues a career in Hollywood she will always be referred to as ‘the daughter of.’

The mother-of-two said: ‘In fact one has to prove oneself more, so even with that deterrent my kids are like, ‘No, sorry we still want to do it.”

Minority demands immediate reinstatement of dismissed BoG Staff

0

The Minority in Parliament is demanding the immediate reinstatement of about 100 staff members dismissed by the Bank of Ghana.

The caucus contends that the termination of the appointments, without appropriate justification, constitutes a violation of Ghana’s labour laws and undermines the rights of the affected workers.

Addressing journalists on Tuesday, June 24, the Member of Parliament for Savelugu, Hajia Fatahia Abdul-Aziz, described the move by the Central Bank as unjust and unacceptable.

She further outlined a series of steps the Minority intends to take if the dismissed employees are not reinstated promptly.

“The Bank of Ghana must restore every single dismissed worker to their rightful position without any further delay. Their appointments were lawful; their dismissals were not,” she stated.

Hajia Abdul-Aziz also called for accountability from the Bank’s leadership, saying, “The Governor of the Bank of Ghana must face Parliament and explain this heartless abuse of power. You are not above the law, and you must answer to the people.”

Family traumatised as fire destroys home at Ayigboe

By Opesika Tetteh Puplampu

Ayigboe-Ada, June 24, GNA – A devastating fire has rendered Mr Akli Seth Tetteh and his family homeless after their home was completely razed at Ayigboe, a fishing community in the Ada East District of the Greater Accra Region.

The fire entirely destroyed the family’s belongings, leaving them with no shelter.

Mr Tetteh, who sustained an electric shock during the fire from a fallen power cable, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that he and his family were having dinner when his younger brother shouted from a distance that their house was on fire.

“I rushed to douse the flames but was overpowered. I cried out for help, and neighbours came to assist, but it was too late,” he recounted.

Items destroyed in the fire included television sets, mattresses, clothing, cash, uniforms for students, books, and other valuables.

Mr Isaac Akli, brother of the victim, said the family currently had no shelter and appealed for urgent support to accommodate them and their families.

“My wife has travelled, and I am here with the children. We don’t know where to sleep. We spent the night outside,” he said.

Ms Bernice Amanartey, an eyewitness, told the GNA that the fire was intense, but the community members did their best to extinguish it.

She recounted, “There was a Bible in the room, and it was the only item not consumed by the inferno. It was surprising,” she disclosed.

Mr Lawer Armah, the Assembly Member for the area, revealed that the Ada East District Command of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), had launched an investigation into the cause of the fire.

He added that efforts by the GNFS to respond to the fire were hampered by the low-lying and waterlogged terrain, which made it difficult for the fire tender to access the property.

He said he had since supported the victims with various relief items, including donating a new school uniform to a pupil who lost hers in the fire.

“I have contacted the Ada East District Office of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the District Chief Executive, and the Member of Parliament to seek assistance for the family. In the meantime, I am arranging temporary shelter for them,” he stated.

Family members are appealing to the public, government institutions, and benevolent individuals to assist them in rebuilding their lives.

“There were other clubs interested, but the stature of Asante Kotoko and the fact that we’ll be competing in the CAF Confederation Cup played a big role in my decision,” said Acquah. “I’ve always heard about the passion and support this club receives in continental football, and I’m eager to be part of it for as long as I’m here.”

Ghanaian TikTok star and music promoter Ananzo Official (Eugene Ananzo Junior) has confirmed that he has yet to spend the $5,000 gifted to him by Nigerian superstar Davido, following a viral video that caught the Afrobeats icon’s attention.

In a recent feature on Joy Prime with Asieduwaa Akumia, Ananzo shared how the token of appreciation was delivered through Davido’s representatives. However, he emphasized that the funds are untouched:

“I have not touched the $5,000 Davido gave me. It is there,” he stated.

Ananzo expressed deep gratitude, remarking, “I believe God transformed himself into Davido to come and bless me and my team.”

The money stemmed from Davido’s promise after resharing Ananzo’s electrifying cover of “With You” by Davido and Omah Lay—a performance originally recorded at a car wash in Takoradi that went viral in April 2025.

Thanks to the viral exposure and Davido’s validation, Ananzo’s TikTok following soared from around 91,000 to over 600,000, and his video has since amassed more than 16 million views and 2 million likes.

Recognising the moment’s significance, he said, “It will come in the media soon,” when asked about his plans for the money.

Despite his boosting fame and windfall, Ananzo said he remains grounded as he continues to work at the washing bay that propelled his online persona while laying groundwork for his upcoming career as a music promoter.

CBOD accuses NPA of flouting President Mahama’s berthing directive

CBOD has accused NPA of flouting the president's berthing directives CBOD has accused NPA of flouting the president’s berthing directives

The Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors (CBOD) has noted that the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has violated a presidential directive regarding the berthing and discharge of petroleum products at the Tema Port.

According to a statement issued by the chamber, the persistent disruption of the Laycan import schedule imposes significant financial burdens on Bulk Import, Distribution, and Export Companies (BIDECs).

The Laycan schedule, developed through multi-stakeholder consultations and published by the NPA, provides a framework for the efficient and orderly importation of petroleum products.

However, in 2025 alone, the schedule was revised more than four (4) times in the first quarter (Q1) and amended seven (7) times in the second quarter (Q2), arbitrarily and without consultation with the industry.

CBOD stated, “These frequent and unilateral changes have severely undermined operational predictability and imposed significant financial burdens on Bulk Import, Distribution, and Export Companies (BIDECs).”

Additionally, it noted that each revision affects up to ten cargoes, causing cumulative delays of approximately thirty days per incident.

“Between January and June 2025, BIDECs incurred over forty million United States dollars (USD 40 million) in demurrage and other associated costs. These unnecessary costs were unfortunately filtered into fuel prices at the pump, further burdening Ghanaian consumers,” CBOD said in the statement.

The chamber described as “alarming” the increasing violation and repeated breach of the Laycan protocol, where BIDECs without assigned slots, often citing vaguely defined “emergency” needs, are being permitted to berth outside the established schedule.

“This practice has severely compromised transparency and fairness in the sector. Alarmingly, for the first time, a second-quarter (Q2) Laycan schedule has been extended into the third quarter, up to September 2025, further escalating uncertainty within the industry.

“Despite CBOD’s engagements and repeated proposals to the NPA to restore order and accountability to the Laycan system, no concrete action has been taken. The situation continues to deteriorate,” CBOD noted.

Ban rapper V12 Origenator’s ‘TONGA’ music video – DKB fumes [Video]

0

Celebrated Ghanaian stand-up comedian DKB is fiercely advocating for the ban of the music video for “Tonga,” a track by budding Ghanaian rapper Swaletz Oppong Kontoh, better known as V12 Origenator.

The single, “Tonga”, which was meticulously engineered at the pre-eminent HUSTLE HARD studio in Tema, has become a mega-hit.

Its accompanying music video, shot in America, features a predominantly bright theme with video vixens creating a vibrant and engaging viewing experience.

The video is structured with two beautifully orchestrated scenes that seamlessly coordinate to convey the song’s story and message.

Since the video was released a week ago, it has created enormous controversy on social media. It has also pitted entertainment figures against each other.

While popular social media personality Code Micky has endorsed the video and even urged the public to support V12 Origenator for being a great rapper, DKB holds a starkly different view.

In a video shared on his social media, the celebrated comedian minced no words in expressing his disapproval.

In his characteristic style, DKB, known in real life as Derrick Kobina Bonney, labelled V12 Origenator a “porno” artiste.

According to him, “Ladies and gentlemen, we have another porno artiste in town… Lord Paper, who has now repented – there is a new Lord Paper.”

“Eii, Ghana artistes, if you want to enter the industry with controversy, come and let me show you how to enter with controversy…But no Porno…V12, if you want to enter industry come and let me show you tactics”. He added

GTEC declares TEWU-TUC sole representative on governing councils of public universities

0

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has formally declared the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU-TUC) as the rightful body to represent workers on the Governing Councils of Public Traditional Universities across the country.

This decision, communicated in a statement issued on Tuesday, June 24, follows a series of engagements and consultations with both the Tertiary Education Workers’ Union (TEWU-GH) and TEWU-TUC, amid ongoing confusion over which group had legitimate representation.

According to GTEC, the final decision was reached after seeking legal advice, which confirmed TEWU-TUC as the appropriate union to serve on the Councils.

“The Teachers’ and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU-TUC) has the rightful representation on the Governing Councils of the Traditional Universities,” the statement affirmed.

In line with this directive, the Commission has instructed all affected universities to immediately take steps to swear in TEWU-TUC representatives and grant them all privileges associated with their position on the Council.

On the other hand, GTEC has directed members of the Tertiary Education Workers’ Union (TEWU-GH) to desist from holding themselves as Council members, even in cases where they may have already been sworn in.

“The Commission hopes that this directive will bring finality to the impasse. We count on your usual cooperation,” the statement signed by GTEC’s Director-General, Professor Jinapor Abdulai, concluded.

Minority opposes Mahama’s nomination of seven Supreme Court Justices

0

The Minority in Parliament has opposed the nomination of seven justices to the Supreme Court by President John Dramani  Mahama.

The caucus contends that the nominations undermine constitutional order and judicial independence, particularly given the Supreme Court’s failure to act during earlier breaches of natural justice, including the suspension of the Chief Justice.

Addressing Parliament during the debate on the Appointments Committee’s report on Tuesday, June 24, Ranking Member on the Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee, Kwame Anyimadu-Antwi, warned that the development sets a dangerous precedent for future judicial nominations.

“It’s not that the justices are not competent, we do not doubt their competence, but Mr Speaker, it’s flooding the box. This is the first time we are having 7 justices at a time. … This is unprecedented, it has never happened in the country, and this must not be allowed…”he said.

Dr Bryan Acheampong begins NPP flagbearer journey with prayer

0

Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Dr Bryan Acheampong, began his journey toward the NPP flagbearership with a solemn visit to the Presbyterian Church of Ghana on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, where he received prayer and anointing, reaffirming the spiritual foundations that anchor his leadership and decision to contest in the 2028 elections.

In a post shared on his X page, he wrote, “Today, I visited the Moderator and some members of the General Council of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana. I reaffirmed the spiritual roots that have shaped my values, my leadership, and my sense of purpose. It was a deeply moving encounter filled with reflection, prayer, and anointing. Faith is not just a part of my story; it is the foundation on which it stands.”

The former Minister of Food and Agriculture has officially declared his intention to join the party’s flagbearership race, following extensive nationwide consultations conducted by an exploratory team over the past month.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, after a meeting with the leadership of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, the lawmaker said his decision followed extensive nationwide consultations conducted by an exploratory team over the past month.

He explained that informing the General Council and Moderator of the church was a matter of principle and respect for his Christian upbringing, adding that he was also seeking divine guidance.

“…A decision has been made that I will contest when the party opens nominations, but to do that, as a product of the church, it will be a disappointment per my tradition, if the Moderator of the church hears it for the first time on the radio,” he stated.

“So, before the formal announcement is made, I thought it wise to inform the General Council and the Moderator of the Presby Church. Most importantly, I am here to also seek the blessings of God,” he noted.

The NPP is expected to elect its next flagbearer at its presidential primaries scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 2026.

EXCLUSIVE: GhanaWeb investigation uncovers far worse environmental scare than digging for gold

“You disrespected me and my people repeatedly while having sodomic relationships with women behind my back”

0

Big Brother Naija, Zion Edet, has broken his silence following the explosive reunion episode where his ex-girlfriend, Chinwe, accused him of exploiting her financially and abandoning her after he collected money.

In a lengthy statement posted on social media, Zion clarified the situation and defended himself against what he described as “twisted narratives.”

Zion acknowledged that he usually keeps quiet, but he said, “Enough is enough.” He disclosed that when he and Chinwe started dating, he had just returned from studying overseas and was still attempting to establish his brands.

According to him, Chinwe was aware of his situation and initially respected his hustle, but later began to “broke shame” him publicly despite their differences in lifestyle and values.

“You make money through means I could never and would never pursue yet I never judged you,” he wrote. “Because I chose a clean, slower path, I deserve to be disrespected?”

He also responded to allegations that he was never fair to Chinwe. Zion enumerated his activities with her, including organizing a spa day, purchasing presents, and even cooking her birthday dinner.

“You claim I never took you out? I gave gifts, planned a spa day, hosted your birthday dinner with friends… but none of that matters without respect.”

Regarding the notorious N270k he asked for on his birthday, which Chinwe brought up at the reunion, Zion clarified that their club bill exceeded N1 million and that he had only asked her to contribute a portion of it. He now says that he regrets relying on someone who “didn’t have his back” to help him.

But Zion didn’t end there.

He disclosed that her team still owes his team N1 million, a debt he claims he instructed them to disregard “out of care” for her.

Regarding Chinwe’s claims of being unfaithful, Zion retorted bluntly that she, too, lacked loyalty.

“You disrespected me and my people repeatedly while having sodomic relationships with women behind my back. Now you’re shocked that I left?”

He concluded the statement with a pointed closing:

“Like you said, ‘Good riddance.’ So be it. Spin your narrative however makes you sleep at night. I’m focused, I’m grinding, and I’m winning regardless.”

‘Tarnishing Reputation’ – Barker-Vormawor Criticizes OSP for Misinterpreting Gyampo’s Message

0

Activist Oliver Barker-Vormawor has criticized the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) for the handling of a message sent by Professor Ransford Gyampo during an investigation into Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML) as per reports from MyNewsGH on Tuesday, June 24, 2025.

The OSP had implied that Gyampo interfered with a search warrant by sending a WhatsApp message to Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng.

Barker-Vormawor took to Facebook to share the contents of the message, which read, “Your shut down of the SML Server would rather cause financial loss to the State.

He expressed disappointment in the OSP’s interpretation of the message, calling the press statement issued by the office “bad faith.”

He further stated that the office’s response was aimed at tarnishing Gyampo’s reputation.

Barker-Vormawor stated that the Special Prosecutor’s office should have exercised greater maturity in handling the matter.

“Let’s be circumspect in public office,” he advised, adding that public criticism should not lead to personal attacks.

In his defense, Prof. Gyampo clarified that his message was intended to express concern, not interfere with the investigation.

“I only expressed the hope that your intentions are patriotic and not personal,” Gyampo explained, asserting that the OSP’s insinuations were unwarranted.

Barker-Vormawor concluded by urging the public to make their own judgments on the issue, pointing at the need for restraint in sensitive investigations.
