JoySports Invitational Tournament set for August 9, 2025, at University of Ghana Stadium

0

The JoySports Invitational Tournament is set to return on Saturday, August 9, 2025, at the University of Ghana Stadium, Legon.

Following a successful comeback in 2024, this year’s edition promises another thrilling day of corporate sports, networking, and healthy competition.

Companies interested in participating can secure their slots by contacting Sleven on 054 010 6466, either via WhatsApp or direct phone call. Registration forms are also available at the front desk of Joy FM or can be downloaded from myjoyonline.com.

The 2025 edition will begin with an energetic early morning aerobics session. This session will provide the perfect opportunity for participants to warm up and set the tone for the day’s activities, encouraging physical readiness and team spirit among all organisations.

Throughout the day, participating companies will compete in a wide variety of events carefully designed to promote endurance, teamwork, and corporate pride. The CEO’s Penalty Shootout will return as a key attraction, following Divine Teyi’s remarkable win in the 2024 edition.

Last year, the football tournament produced a thrilling climax as Cosa-Bright Company Limited, a newcomer in civil engineering and electrical works, clinched victory in their debut appearance.

The 2025 tournament will also feature several exciting competitions such as the Women’s Penalty Shootout, the Mixed 4×100m Relay, the Basketball Shooting Contest, Mixed Volleyball, the Women’s 50m Dash, the Men’s 100m Dash, the Mixed Sack Relay, the Lime and Spoon Relay, Scrabble, and a range of board and E- games.

These competitions are expected to draw high participation from corporate teams across the country.

The 2024 edition of the JoySports Invitational produced outstanding moments and fierce competition, setting the tone for an even bigger event this year.

The NPA emerged as the overall champions after a commanding performance, while debutants ARB Apex Bank made a significant impression.

With an impressive national presence of over 147 branches and a customer base of over eight million, ARB Apex Bank secured three gold medals in the women’s Tug of Peace, the women’s 5km walk with a time of fifty minutes and thirty-four seconds, and chess.

They also captured a silver medal in the men’s table tennis and a bronze medal in the men’s race walk, completing their debut with five medals that signal a bright future in the competition.

Sapholda Ventures also delivered a spectacular performance, winning gold in the women’s one hundred metres final, the women’s sack race, and the women’s penalty shootout.

They further claimed silver in the women’s table tennis and bronze in the women’s one hundred metres final with a time of fifteen point two two seconds.

The versatile Belinda Ntiamoah was a standout performer, securing bronze in the women’s one hundred metres and winning the women’s penalty shootout.

Jetlink Flight Support dominated the Scrabble competition, while the Multimedia Group excelled in Armwrestling.

Escort Security showcased their strength in the swimming event, followed closely by Multichoice Ghana, who also demonstrated their competitive edge by winning the E-sports competition.

McDan Group delivered an impressive showing in Volleyball, and Piwak Natural Health claimed victory in the men’s 5 km race walk.

Adansi Travels provided one of the most memorable highlights of the tournament with their infectious enthusiasm and unwavering support throughout the event. Their extraordinary energy earned them the prestigious Team Spirit Award, reaffirming their reputation as one of the most spirited teams.

The Jama contest, a signature attraction of the JoySports Invitational Tournament, will once again feature prominently.

The team that demonstrates the most creativity, coordinated chants, and vibrant display of support will receive special recognition, adding a cultural vibrancy to the competitive environment.

The JoySports Invitational Tournament remains a leading platform for advancing corporate wellness, strengthening workplace relationships, and building lasting professional networks in a friendly but highly competitive atmosphere.

Companies are encouraged to assemble their teams and begin preparations for what promises to be a memorable and impactful event.

Amend anti-corruption laws to close loopholes – gov’t urged

0

By Juliet ETEFE ([email protected])

Renowned tax and legal expert Professor Abdallah Ali-Nakyea has called for urgent amendments of Ghana’s anti-corruption laws to close longstanding legal loopholes that continue enabling impunity and eroding national development efforts.

Speaking at a multi-stakeholder forum in Accra organised by the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), Prof. Ali-Nakyea emphasised that although Ghana boasts a wide range of anti-corruption institutions and legal frameworks, the fight against graft remains weak due to fragmented implementation, institutional under-resourcing and outdated legislation.

The forum was themed “Hidden Riches, Hollow Laws: Dissecting the Loopholes that Fuel Corruption in Ghana”.

“Corruption undermines democracy, violates human rights, distorts markets and allows organised crime and terrorism to flourish. It is not just a legal issue; it is a developmental crisis,” he stated.

He highlighted alarming statistics, such as Ghana losing approximately GH¢13.8billion (US$3billion) annually to corruption – a figure that, if curbed, could build 12 facilities equivalent to the 430-bed Ridge Hospital in Accra.

He juxtaposed this with the country’s request for a US$3billion IMF loan over three years, underscoring that internal leakages outstrip external aid.

Prof. Ali-Nakyea cited numerous cases, including the GYEEDA and recent National Service Scheme scandals, as evidence for the enduring scale of public sector corruption.

He noted that corruption disproportionately affects the poor by diverting resources meant for development, deepening inequity and poor service delivery.

Failures

The tax and anti-money laundering specialist outlined several deficiencies in the anti-corruption laws, especially the Criminal Offences Act which only addresses bribery when it involves public officers – leaving out private sector actors and indirect benefits.

He also criticised the Public Procurement Act, stating that while it includes provisions on private sector bribery, its scope is limited to procurement processes and does not criminalise broader unethical corporate practices.

“In any procurement, there is both demand and supply. We keep prosecuting the public officers, but the private actors – those who offer the bribes – go untouched. That has to change,” he stressed.

Prof. Ali-Nakyea also decried the misuse of sole-sourcing in public procurement, which he said defeats the very essence of competitive and transparent contracting.

Institutional weaknesses

Despite Ghana having numerous anti-corruption institutions – including the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), EOCO, CHRAJ, Financial Intelligence Centre and Auditor-General – many remain underfunded and understaffed.

“These institutions are always broke,” he remarked. “How are they expected to investigate, prosecute and recover stolen assets without the needed resources?”

He called for enhanced collaboration among these bodies, especially in tracking beneficial ownership under the Companies Act, 2019 (Act 992).

He also lamented the low compliance with requirement for companies to disclose true, individual owners to prevent politically exposed persons from hiding behind anonymous corporate structures.

He also questioned the capacity and independence of internal audit systems and expressed concern over the safety and protection of whistleblowers, calling for a review of the Whistleblower Act to guarantee confidentiality and relocation support where necessary.

Recommendations

To this end, he recommended: Amendment of anti-corruption and procurement laws to explicitly cover third-party beneficiaries and private sector bribery; Strengthening institutions like the OSP, Auditor-General, and CHRAJ with adequate funding and autonomy; Criminalising conflict of interest and establishing clearer penalties for non-declaration of assets by public officials; Ensuring that findings from the Public Accounts Committee are enforced, including recovery and prosecution.

Enhancing access to public information for journalists and civil society, while protecting whistleblowers more robustly; Blacklisting companies found engaging in unethical practices from public procurement opportunities; Promoting public transparency through technology and reducing manual interference in financial transactions.

He further urged international partners to focus support on institutional capacity building rather than aid handouts.

“We don’t need loans. Help us plug the holes and we’ll have enough to develop,” he said, further stressing that the country must make corruption an uncomfortable venture.

For his part, Dr. Kojo Impraim, Programme Director (MFWA), noted that corruption and illicit financial flows are undermining Ghana’s democracy, national security and development financing.

He called for a united front and stronger accountability measures, urging government and stakeholders to allow the law to work without political interference.

Nkrumah and co were pioneers without predecessors, and it shows – Yaw Nsarkoh

0

Former Executive Vice President of Unilever Ghana and Nigeria, Yaw Nsarkoh, says Africa’s democratic dysfunction is not merely a policy failure.

According to him, it’s a historical inevitability rooted in the continent’s tragic starting point.

In an interview on JoyNews’ PM Express following his provocative lecture “Iniquities of Iniquity in Our Santa Claus Democracy,” he argued that many of Africa’s leaders inherited broken structures, faced uncharted terrain, and became pioneers without predecessors, and it shows.

“You take someone like Nkrumah, who was he learning from?” Yaw Nsarkoh quizzed.

“Whose mistakes could he study? These people were pioneers. They were navigating terrain with no compass, no predecessors, and no playbook. And we’re still paying for that.”

He said the failure of post-colonial democracy in Africa stems from this fundamental void—an elite class forced to construct nations from the ruins of colonialism, while simultaneously battling for survival in a global order already stacked against them.

“Our democratic project started not with the control of sovereign productive forces but with a flag, an anthem, and a dark-skinned president,” he said sharply, referencing Kabral Blay-Amihere. “That is not independence.”

For Yaw Nsarkoh, the rot is systemic and historic. “The colonial hangover is real,” he said.

“The post-colonial elite simply took over the levers of the state and became new colonialists. They built nothing for the people—they just inherited power and used it to look after themselves.”

Yaw Nsarkoh said African democracies were built on “distorted realities.”

Unlike Western democracies that emerged after centuries of capital accumulation and institution building, Africa was asked to adopt a system without the economic and historical foundations to sustain it.

“The West started modern democracy when they already had wealth to distribute. Africa was forced into a democracy while still crawling from under the wreckage of colonialism. It’s not the same conversation.”

He dismissed attempts to compare Ghana with countries like Singapore as disingenuous.

“The starting points were different,” he said. “Singapore didn’t have to carry the same weight of colonial distortion. They weren’t starting with GDPs below $3,000 per capita and broken institutional memory. We were.”

He lamented that local government in Ghana has effectively collapsed, and that what passes for democracy is little more than “a public auction for the highest bidder.”

“What we have is not participation—it is transaction,” Nsarkoh said. “Citizens are no longer participants in democracy. They are ballots, bought and sold.”

At the heart of his critique is a deep disillusionment with the elite consensus and how it perpetuates the illusion of progress.

“We celebrate elections like they are proof of democracy. But what we have is Santa Claus democracy—a system of gifts and giveaways, not accountability,” he said.

RICS Ghana members to convene for landmark seminar on professional standards in real estate

0

A group of Ghanaian professionals affiliated with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) is organising a landmark seminar focused on ethical real estate practice and professional transparency.

The seminar, scheduled for Thursday, July 3, 2025, at Dynaspace, The Signature Apartment, East Legon, is themed “Professional Ethics and Transparency in Real Estate.”

The event will bring together RICS members, real estate developers, valuation experts, quantity surveyors, other built environment professionals, and students from top academic institutions for a half-day of thought leadership and networking.

Key speakers include Bonface Waweru, RICS Sub-Saharan Africa Market Development Lead, and Surveyor Rosemagaret Esubonteng, past President of Ghana Institution of Surveyors, who will chair the event.

The seminar will also feature a goodwill message from the GhIS President and several presentations aimed at shaping professional values and mentorship for future practitioners.

Beyond the day’s presentations, the event will provide valuable guidance for professionals and students aspiring to join RICS, the global gold standard for built environment professionals.

Participants will learn about the benefits of membership and how to begin the journey toward internationally recognized qualifications in real estate and surveying.

Lead sponsors include Orient Property Consulting, Broll Ghana, Property Datahub, and Stratigiko—firms committed to raising ethical standards and encouraging youth leadership in the sector.

Organisers say the event is also part of an effort to revitalise the engagement of RICS members in Ghana and increase visibility of the profession locally.

Ghana’s democracy is built on a distorted reality, not true independence, says Yaw Nsarkoh

0

The former Executive Vice President of Unilever Ghana and Nigeria, Yaw Nsarkoh, says Ghana’s democracy was never built on genuine independence; it is, instead, a grand illusion rooted in a distorted reality.

“Our democratic project didn’t begin from a position of real sovereignty,” he told JoyNews’ PM Express.

“What we called independence was, at best, symbolic. It wasn’t backed by control over our productive forces. You had a flag, an anthem, and a dark-skinned president, but that doesn’t make you truly independent.”

Drawing from his widely discussed lecture at the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences — ‘Iniquities of Iniquity in Our Santa Claus Democracy’ — Yaw Nsarkoh described Ghana’s political space as a dangerous parody of democracy: one that functions more like a “public auction for the highest bidder” than a participatory governance system.

“The electorate,” he said, “has been reduced to ballots. Not citizens. Just ballots.”

He dismissed comparisons with thriving democracies like Singapore as intellectually lazy. “People keep saying, look at Singapore. But Singapore didn’t start modern democracy at GDP per capita levels of $3,000.

“Their context was different. They had centuries-old institutions, strong traditions. We, on the other hand, were dealing with colonial hangovers — no capital accumulation, no institutional depth.”

Quoting political thinkers like Claude Ake and citing texts like Return to the Source by Kabral Blay-Amihere, Yaw Nsarkoh laid bare a searing critique of Ghana’s post-colonial elite.

“They simply replaced the colonialists,” he said. “They took over the state apparatus and looked after themselves. They didn’t liberate us — they inherited the machinery of control and became its new masters.”

His dissection of the failures went beyond philosophy. Yaw Nsarkoh zeroed in on what he called the collapse of Local Government as evidence of a hollow democracy.

“There is no meaningful devolution of power,” he argued. “The institutions closest to the people are broken. You can’t talk about a functioning democracy when Local Government has essentially collapsed.”

According to him, the consequences are now playing out in real time.

“What we’re seeing is the erosion of public trust, the commodification of politics, and a creeping cynicism among the youth. They’re not apathetic because they’re lazy. They’re disillusioned. They know this isn’t what democracy is supposed to be.”

Yaw Nsarkoh didn’t spare Ghana’s intellectual class either.

“We’ve failed to create a truly indigenous intellectual tradition to interrogate our own political evolution. Instead, we copy frameworks that don’t fit and wonder why they break.”

Yaw Nsarkoh concluded with a warning: “We are not dealing with cosmetic dysfunction. We are dealing with foundational cracks. If we don’t confront this distorted reality, we risk institutional collapse under the weight of our delusions.”

‘Wahab is not a fugitive’ – Minority blasts dramatic arrest of ex-NAFCO boss and wife

0

The Minority Caucus has blasted the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), condemning the arrest and bail conditions imposed on Abdul Hannan Wahab, former CEO of the National Food Buffer Stock Company.

The Caucus says, “Mr Wahab is not a fugitive.”

In a press statement issued on June 29, Deputy Minority Leader Patricia Appiagyei described EOCO’s actions as political persecution and a blatant abuse of power, warning that “justice must not depend on political colours.”

The 2024 NPP parliamentary candidate for Pusiga and his wife were picked up by EOCO in what the Minority called a “coordinated arrest operation” in both Accra and Tamale on Wednesday, June 25.

“They were picked up as though they were fugitives,” the statement read, insisting that “he is a family man, not a criminal.”

The former CEO is under investigation for alleged tax evasion, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state, but the Minority says these remain unproven allegations.

What has shocked Parliament’s Minority side even more, they say, are the excessive bail conditions imposed.

Mr. Wahab was granted bail of GH¢50 million with two sureties, both of whom must justify their worth in assets. His wife was granted GH¢30 million bail with similar conditions.

“We find this unacceptable,” the Minority declared. “Bail is not supposed to be a punishment or a pre-conviction sentence. These conditions, by all standards, are excessive.”

They cited Section 96 of the Criminal and Other Offences (Procedure) Act and the Supreme Court ruling in Kpebu No. 2 v Attorney-General to argue that bail must be reasonable and take into account a person’s financial capacity.

“What is the justification for bail conditions that amount to financial punishment before trial?” they asked.

“Where in our laws does it say someone must risk bankruptcy just to secure their freedom while under investigation?”

They described the treatment of Mr. Wahab and his wife as “harsh” and “humiliating,” warning that it “sends a worrying signal that people who have served under a past administration will be targeted once power shifts.”

The Minority accused the current NDC administration of weaponising state institutions, saying, “This is not about justice, it is political persecution. It is part of a broader pattern to intimidate perceived political opponents.”

The statement also had stern words for EOCO’s Acting Executive Director.

“We urge Mr. Raymond Archer to act with integrity. How he handles this will define his legacy. Posterity is watching.”

While acknowledging that accountability is essential, the Minority warned against turning legal processes into political tools.

“When institutions are weaponised to settle political scores, we damage the foundations of our democracy.”

They called on civil society, religious leaders, the media, and the general public to speak up.

“Let us demand that our justice system be fair, not fearful… Enough of the political harassment, persecution and intimidation!”

The Minority concluded by demanding “the immediate review of the bail conditions imposed on Mr Wahab and his wife,” insisting that “he must be released on terms that uphold both his dignity and the principles of justice.”

The Boakyewaa Glover Show – MyJoyOnline

0

Boakyewaa Glover, organisational psychologist and author, has quietly launched one of the most authentic and raw YouTube series in Ghana. The Boakyewaa Glover Show focuses on topics related to life, health, and relationships, with a heavy emphasis on mental health. What makes the show different is Boakyewaa’s directness, realness, and vulnerability. She goes there—openly discussing topics that are often unspoken or taboo, candidly and openly.

The show’s first episode is titled Brilliance Interrupted – The Story of James Amoako Glover and sets the tone for everything else that follows on the show. Boakyewaa’s father, James Amoako Glover, was a prominent lawyer who worked with former President Nana Akufo-Addo.

He suffered from schizophrenia and lived on the streets for decades, resisting help until later in life when he finally accepted treatment. Sadly, he passed away less than a year after getting healthy. Boakyewaa shares this story with such strength and resolve, though traces of emotional pain are evident in her voice.

She says she’s sharing her lived experiences to help break the stigma of mental illness, which has pervaded Ghanaian culture for decades. At 46, this is her first time telling her father’s story publicly, and she often wishes she had done so sooner. It is a very poignant and deeply touching episode, showing directly, the impact of mental illness on loved ones.

Boakyewaa has been in consistent therapy for over two years. As an organisational psychologist with a family history of mental illness and a neurodivergent child, the psychological landscape is familiar to her. But in 2023, while juggling a new demanding job, a challenging relationship, and multiple court cases, she reached her limit and sought help for herself.

“When you have a family history of medical conditions like diabetes, hypertension, or cancer, most people get screened early, recognising the risk that family history presents. I decided to take the same approach to my mental health. 2023 was a very difficult year, everything felt heavy. I was afraid that with stress and genetics, schizophrenia could happen to me too. So I got help.”

She was not diagnosed with schizophrenia, but she is in treatment for other equally difficult challenges. During the 2025 Mental Health Forum, she gave a powerful speech on generational mental health, tracing her father’s story, her son’s ADHD and PTSD (from a gas explosion and attempted kidnapping), and then opening up about her own experiences, including a PTSD diagnosis following a helicopter crash (a national incident involving a military helicopter that crashed with the remains of former chief of defense staff, Air Marshall M. A. Otu, her grandfather), persistent depressive disorder, borderline personality disorder, and a devastating heartbreak that landed her in the ER.

That traumatic heartbreak is a recurring theme on The Boakyewaa Glover show, weaving its way through multiple episodes. It’s the story she shared on both The Super Morning Show and the AM Show on Joy News Network.

In 2024, while still grappling with her diagnoses, her boyfriend left her via text, an incident that torpedoed and deeply destabilized her mental health progress and remains a source of excruciating pain and trauma.

In one episode, she discusses it with her therapist, Dr. Paul Kumi, a trauma specialist. Dr. Kumi notes that heartbreak can be deeply traumatic, akin to the death of a loved one for people who are already vulnerable. Yet in our culture, heartbreak is often seen as a normal rite of passage. Boakyewaa’s episode titled The Trauma of Heartbreak explores just how life-threatening heartbreak can be, backed by research and medical literature, including broken heart syndrome, a form of cardiomyopathy that can lead to death.

“It’s been over 10 months since the breakup, since the text that changed my life dropped onto my phone, and I am still struggling, every single day. Healing isn’t linear and this is a really tough one for me. This breakup has shattered my self-worth and I am trying hard to rebuild. What I ask myself is—how can someone who knows me so well, knows my heart, the depth of my love, my loyalty and commitment, my challenges, including my mental illness and my insecurities, walk away just like that? Because I’m too much? Because I don’t trust easily? I admit that I can be intense and mistrustful, because of my traumas, my sensitivities, my insecurities. But I had hoped to be a problem worth fighting for. It’s still so painful. It will take a very long time to get over.”

One of her most raw episodes is on weight. In The Stigma of Obesity, she opens up about her greatest insecurity—her body. She wonders if that was part of why her ex walked away so easily. She speaks about her weight with startling honesty and bluntness. She admits that she doesn’t like her body, but she respects what it can do, as she constantly strength trains, and has discipline and focus that many people do not have. She is a beast in the gym, but somehow does not love her looks, perhaps due to the many hurtful comments and stigma, some of which she speaks about on the show. They have all taken a toll on her.

Boakyewaa embraces her unconventional looks – natural cornrows, no makeup, and loosely fitted clothes. She’s accepted her nontraditional aesthetic, though this acceptance hasn’t yet extended to her body.

What sets The Boakyewaa Glover Show apart is the raw honesty and vulnerability. Boakyewaa is intense, troubled, and highly self-aware—but also incredibly resilient and hopeful. Her authenticity is refreshing and rare. Her laughter with guests is infectious. She’s giddy in Dating for Love or Provision with Sid, in awe of Agyeiwaa in Strong is the New Skinny, and deeply reflective with Linda in The Strong Woman Burden.

“I am a high functioning person with challenges, and that is exactly why I’m doing the show and my mental health advocacy. I want to show that mental illness is not just about psychosis, delusions and crippling functionality. Most people with mental illness look like me – we go to work, we parent, we socialize, and we function, but inwardly, internally, there is chaos and struggle, and without help, without addressing it, it can bubble over to something worse. It is so important to me to showcase that facet of life – to have someone like me, articulate, successful, a published author, be on screen and admit to my challenges and insecurities, and show that mental illness is not just reserved for those on the streets, or in mental institutions. Mental illness can look like me or you. People really need to understand that, to get help.”

The Boakyewaa Glover Show sets a new standard for honest, necessary conversations. The host bares her soul, bravely and courageously, risking judgment and stigma, all to share and showcase the importance of authentic conversations, and to help others feel seen.

Season One is currently streaming on YouTube, with new episodes released each weekend.

Boakyewaa is also the author of six books: The Anatomy of a Breakup, Commitment, Love You More, The Justice, Tendai, and Circles (available on Amazon).

0

Keyime Dam collapses for the second time

0

Keyime Dam in the Agortime-Ziope District of the Volta Region collapsed on Monday evening, following a downpour at its source.

It is the second time the dam, constructed in 1963, has collapsed. It collapsed in October 1995 under similar circumstances.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) about the incident, Torgbui Satsi III, Chief of Adzonkor, a farming community close to the dam site, told GNA that they detected a defect in the canal and spillage areas some four years ago.

However, they did not have the necessary funds to repair it, as a few individuals had hijacked the dam’s proceeds.

He said rehabilitation work was done in 2016, and expressed doubt if the government would be interested in helping to repair it again.

Mr. Moses Awaga, the Assemblyman for Adzonkor Electoral Area, also confirmed the incident to the GNA.

Mr. Alfred Odikro Klu, the District Chief Executive for Agortime-Ziope District, also confirmed the devastating situation to the GNA, stating, “I am currently at the dam site”, when reached by the GNA at 0700 hours on Tuesday, June 24, 2025.

Keyime Dam, located in the Ziope Traditional Area, served over 42 towns and villages.

It collapsed in October 1995, but the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) awarded the project for its reconstruction in December 2014, with work starting in January 2015.

The Dam served as the main source of drinking water for the people and promoted economic activities, as the residents engaged in fishing activities, which led to the development of a vibrant fishing industry in the area.

The dam also enhanced farming activities, as the people used it as source of water for irrigation during the off-farm season.

They cultivated lands in the catchment area of the dam, particularly growing vegetables such as tomatoes, okro, and pepper, which are in high demand.

The residents appealed to the government to help rehabilitate the dam.

Yahaya Alhassan, President of the New Ghana Social Justice Forum, has issued a direct appeal to foreign ambassadors in Ghana to visit the nation’s notorious witch camps, calling international attention to the systemic abuse of women accused of witchcraft.

The appeal coincided with Italy’s National Day celebrations at the Italian Ambassador’s residence, where Alhassan denounced the camps as relics of superstition and gender-based persecution.

Targeted diplomatic missions include those of Canada, Switzerland, the U.S., France, the UK, Lebanon, the EU, Italy, and Denmark. Alhassan emphasized that accused individuals—primarily widows, elderly women, and single mothers lacking social protection—face isolation and violence based on false beliefs. “Life’s misfortunes or illnesses are wrongly blamed on witchcraft,” he stated, noting many victims suffer from dementia or mental health conditions requiring care, not condemnation.

Alhassan’s advocacy previously contributed to Ghana’s 2022 Criminal Offences (Amendment) Bill, which criminalized witchcraft accusations and banned witch doctors. However, he stressed that legislation alone is insufficient, urging Parliament to prioritize closing all camps. He cited the 2020 lynching of 90-year-old Akua Denteh as evidence of deadly consequences when accusations escalate unchecked.

The activist outlined a six-year plan to replace camps with modern housing offering rehabilitation and mental health support. “No greater legacy exists for diplomats than liberating innocent women and children—some as young as seven—from these conditions,” he declared, framing the issue as a humanitarian imperative requiring global solidarity.

The Member of Parliament for Manhyia South Constituency in the Ashanti Region, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, has called for strict adherence to due process and the rule of law amid ongoing discussions surrounding a potential impeachment or removal process targeting the suspended Chief Justice.

In a statement issued on the matter, Baffour Awuah stressed the need for transparency, fairness, and respect for legal procedures in any such undertaking.

He emphasised that the rights of the suspended Chief Justice must be fully protected throughout the process, cautioning against political expediency or public pressure compromising the integrity of legal institutions.

“Regardless of the personalities involved, we must uphold the principles of justice and fairness,” the MP stated.

“Due process is not a luxury—it is a constitutional requirement, especially in matters as sensitive and consequential as this.”

While the specifics of the case remain unclear and further clarification is expected, the Suame legislator’s remarks serve as a timely reminder of the constitutional safeguards designed to protect both the accused and the integrity of the Judiciary.

Baffour Awuah urged all stakeholders—parliamentarians, the media, and the public—to allow the legal processes to unfold objectively and without interference, reaffirming his commitment to upholding the democratic tenets of Ghana’s governance system.

Lebron James extends Lakers stay for record 23rd NBA season

0

LeBron James is set to play in a record 23rd NBA season after his agent said the 40-year-old has exercised an option to extend his contract with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Rich Paul said James, the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, was targeting a fifth Championship after activating a $53m (£41m) player option for the 2025-26 season.

“He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all,” he told ESPN.

“We understand the difficulty in winning now while preparing for the future. We do want to evaluate what’s best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career. He wants to make every season he has left count, and the Lakers understand that, are supportive and want what’s best for him.”

James currently shares the NBA season record with eight-time All-Star Vince Carter. His tally of 1,562 regular-season appearances is just 50 short of breaking former Boston Celtics star Robert Parish’s NBA record.

In 2023 he broke Lakers icon Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s long-standing points record of 38,387 to become the NBA’s all-time leading scorer. His current tally stands at 42,184.

James’ NBA career began in 2003 when he was drafted first overall by hometown team, the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The forward joined the Miami Heat in 2010, winning two titles, before returning to lead Cleveland to their only NBA title with a 2016 success.

He has been with the Lakers since 2018 and helped them win the 2020 title, which was also the fourth time James was named NBA finals MVP.

His 20-year-old son Bronny was drafted by the Lakers in the summer of 2024 and they became the first father-son duo to share the court in an NBA game in October.

‘I’m the real father of Kumawood, stop the lies!’

Rev. Samuel Nyamekye is the CEO of Miracle Films Rev. Samuel Nyamekye is the CEO of Miracle Films

Veteran filmmaker and CEO of Miracle Films, Samuel Nyamekye, has fired shots at Samdakus for claiming he coined the term “Kumawood.”

Recently, Samdakus appeared on Seancity TV, boldly stating he was the originator of the popular label for movies made in Kumasi. But Miracle Films isn’t having it.

In a fiery interview on the same platform with blogger Busumuru Sean Kingston and Obaapa Ruthy Mummie, he called Samdakus’ claim false and historically inaccurate.

“Sammadakus didn’t create the name — I did! In 2008, at actor Kwame Owusu Ansah’s funeral in Accra, we Kumasi filmmakers, were sidelined. Out of anger, I said, ‘We, the Kumawood people, are leaving!’ That’s how the name started,” Miracle revealed.

He insisted that though Samdakus helped popularise the name through the Kumawood Awards, he cannot claim ownership.

“Creating the name and pushing it are two different things. I gave birth to Kumawood — others only helped raise it.”

He ended with a warning, “No one should ever claim they created Kumawood. Everyone knows I’m the father of Kumawood. Let’s speak the truth!”

The battle over the origins of Kumawood is on! Who do you believe?

AG discloses Akufo-Addo-era national security bank records

In a dramatic courtroom development, the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has submitted classified bank records from the Akufo-Addo administration’s National Security Secretariat as part of an ongoing criminal trial—while hesitating to release similar records from the Mahama era, citing national interest concerns.

The disclosures were made in the high-profile case of The Republic vs. Kwabena Adu-Boahene, where the former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau (NSB) faces charges of financial misconduct.

The NSB, previously known as the Bureau of National Communications, operates under Ghana’s National Security Council.

The documents tendered include detailed bank statements and international transfer records from what the prosecution described as the “Government BNC account”—a suspected special operations account allegedly used for covert transactions.

These records, submitted without redaction, have drawn widespread attention in legal and security circles due to revelations of multi-million-dollar dealings between Ghana’s National Security outfit and foreign intelligence and cyber-defense contractors, including firms based in Israel.

Notably, some transactions were said to have been approved or supervised by the late National Security Coordinator, Joshua Kyeremeh, the accused, Kwabena Adu-Boahene, and other senior officials.

Edith Opokua Adumuah, former Director of Finance at the Secretariat and now a prosecution witness, is also prominently mentioned in the filings.

During a Case Management Conference held on Thursday, June 26, lead defence counsel Samuel Atta Akyea pushed back strongly against what he described as the Attorney-General’s “selective disclosure of evidence.”

In a motion backed by an affidavit, he asked the court to compel the state to release all financial records from National Security’s special operations accounts, spanning every government in Ghana’s Fourth Republic since 1992.

“The Attorney-General has unreservedly filed National Security’s special operations accounts from the Akufo-Addo presidency before the whole world,” Akyea told the court.

“We cannot accept cherry-picking. The prosecution is duty-bound to disclose all material uncovered during investigations—not just what supports their case.”

Akyea argued that the requested disclosures could reveal operational precedents or patterns that might exonerate his client or provide crucial context for his actions.

Responding on behalf of the Attorney-General’s office, Deputy A-G Justice Srem Sai rejected the defence’s call for historic disclosures as “overly broad and irrelevant” to the specific charges facing Adu-Boahene.

“The request is not only impractical but also borders on compromising national security,” Sai contended. “The current charges are linked to specific financial transactions during a defined period under one administration.”

The Deputy A-G insisted that the prosecution has complied fully with its disclosure obligations relating to the charges and accused the defence of attempting to turn the trial into a political inquisition.

The court is expected to rule on the defence’s motion for further disclosures on Thursday, July 3, 2025. Until then, whether records from the Mahama era and potentially even earlier administrations will be released remains unresolved.

Meanwhile, Kwabena Adu-Boahene maintains his innocence and has denied any wrongdoing. Observers say the case could set significant precedents regarding transparency, accountability, and evidentiary disclosure in prosecutions involving national security finances.

The greatest betrayals in Ghana’s history

0

Ghana has seen many great leaders who placed the country on the world stage, with some fighting vigorously to secure the freedom Ghanaians enjoy today.

History shows that these leaders did not have smooth journeys and often suffered betrayal, sometimes at the hands of people closest to them.

Historian and lawyer Yaw Anokye Frimpong, in a recent interview on Max TV, provided historical details of some of the greatest betrayals the country has witnessed.

Below are some of these great leaders and the betrayals they suffered:

Kaku Ackah

One of the great leaders of pre-independent Ghana who was betrayed, according to Anokye Frimpong, was Kaku Ackah I, the great-grandfather of Ghana’s first president, Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

Kaku Ackah I, the chief of Nzema in the 1840s, was betrayed by his own people after refusing to accept British rule by declining to sign the Bond of 1844.

He refused to sign the bond because he believed that although the land would remain theirs, the people would be ruled by British laws, effectively selling their freedom to the colonialists.

Kaku Ackah I not only refused to sign but openly called the other chiefs who signed the bond “fools” for surrendering their freedom, which led to an attack by the British.

During the conflict, his own soldiers, who had secretly conspired with the British, retreated, leading to Kaku Ackah’s arrest.

At his trial, Kaku Ackah impressed the British when he declared that, as a sovereign chief, he could not subject himself to a foreign court and insisted they should kill him instead.

Although initially sentenced to death, the British reduced his punishment to solitary confinement. He died after six years in prison.

The British described Kaku Ackah as a great man who defended his conscience. He was buried at the Cape Coast Castle, becoming the only black person to be buried there.

Prempeh I

Nana Prempeh I (L) and the Current Asantehene

According to Anokye Frimpong, another great betrayal was suffered by Nana Prempeh I, the 13th Asantehene.

He explained that Kwame Tua, a former sub-chief of Asanteman, who remains disliked to this day, betrayed Nana Prempeh I by revealing the location of the sacred Golden Stool to the British.

During the governorship of Maxwell, the British actively searched for the Golden Stool, believing it would bring them wealth and power in the region.

Kwame Tua provided information about the stool’s whereabouts and those connected to it, which eventually led to the arrest of Nana Prempeh I.

While under British protection, Kwame Tua further betrayed Prempeh by having affairs with the wives of the imprisoned Asantehene and even publicly marrying one of them.

Dr Kwegyir Aggrey is on Ghana’s five cedi note:

Another betrayal, according to Anokye Frimpong, involved Dr James Emmanuel Kwegyir Aggrey.

Dr Kwegyir Aggrey, who held two doctorate degrees, was so brilliant that he was envied by the whites, who could not match his excellence.

His remarkable work with the Phelps Stokes Fund, a foundation focused on Africa’s development, drew international attention.

Anokye Frimpong claimed that when white officials realised Dr Aggrey’s growing influence, they saw him as a threat.

In 1927, after returning to the United States to present his project reports, Dr Aggrey was allegedly poisoned and died at the age of 51.

Raphael Grey Armattoe

Anokye Frimpong also recounted the betrayal of Raphael Grey Armattoe, a brilliant scientist and political activist who died at just 41 years old.

Armattoe was the first African to be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1948 and finished second for the Nobel Prize in Science and Physiology.

He invented a medication that saved millions of Nigerians from ringworm and blood diseases.

Armattoe, a passionate advocate for the unification of British and French Togoland (modern-day Eweland), was the first person to write a book in three international languages, English, French, and German.

According to the historian, Armattoe was poisoned shortly after delivering a speech at the United Nations on Ewe unification. He was taken to Germany for treatment, but did not survive.

Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah

Dr Kwame Nkrumah (L) and his foreign affairs minister, Dr Alex Quaison-Sackey

Finally, Anokye Frimpong said Ghana’s first president, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, was betrayed by his trusted confidant, Dr Alex Quaison-Sackey, who served as Nkrumah’s foreign affairs minister.

He alleged that Dr Quaison-Sackey played a key role in the CIA-backed plot that led to Nkrumah’s overthrow in February 1966.

According to the historian, Nkrumah deeply trusted Quaison-Sackey, who reassured him that he could safely travel without fearing a coup. However, Quaison-Sackey allegedly colluded with the CIA.

Anokye Frimpong claimed that the CIA promised to make Quaison-Sackey the next president of Ghana, which motivated his betrayal.

Spain records temperature of 46C as Europe heatwave continues

0

A heatwave continues to grip large parts of Europe, with authorities in many countries issuing health warnings amid searing temperatures.

Southern Spain is the worst-affected region, with temperatures in the mid-40s Celsius recorded in Seville and neighbouring areas.

A new heat record for June of 46C was set on Saturday in the town of El Granado, according to Spain’s national weather service, which also said this month is on track to be the hottest June on record.

Red heat warnings are in force in parts of Portugal, Italy and Croatia, with numerous amber warnings covering areas of Spain, France, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Hungary, Serbia, Slovenia and Switzerland.

In Barcelona, a woman died after completing a shift as a road sweeper on Saturday, when temperatures were very high. Local authorities are investigating her death.

In Italy, emergency departments across the country have reported an uptick in heatstroke cases, mainly affecting “elderly people, cancer patients, or homeless people”, Mario Guarino, vice president of the Italian Society of Emergency Medicine, told the AFP news agency.

Hospitals such as the Ospedale dei Colli in Naples have set up dedicated heatstroke pathways to speed up access to vital treatments such as cold water immersion.

The city of Bologna, further north, has set up seven climate shelters with air conditioning and drinking water, while Rome has offered free access to city swimming pools for those over 70.

A pharmacist in Portugal’s capital, Lisbon, told Reuters news agency that, despite telling people “not to go out” during the hottest hours of the day, “we have already had some cases of heat strokes and burns”.

The severe heat has also affected countries across the western Balkans, where temperatures have reached over 40°C.

Serbia registered its highest-ever temperature since it began recording them in the 19th century. In Slovenia, the hottest-ever June temperature was recorded on Saturday.

North Macedonia is also sweltering as temperatures reached 42°C on Friday.

Tourists cool off under a cloud of mist in Valencia, Spain, on Sunday

More hot weather to come

Some areas will continue to get hotter until the middle of the week, with temperatures rising across France, Germany, Italy and the UK over the next few days.

Yellow and amber alerts are in place for parts of England this weekend, and temperatures in London may reach 35C on Monday.

The heat has been building under a big area of high pressure, with dry air descending and warming.

As that process has continued over a number of days, temperatures have climbed. The area of high pressure will move eastwards over the next few days, taking the high temperatures northwards and eastwards with it.

While it is hard to link individual extreme weather events to climate change, heat waves are becoming more common and more intense due to climate change.

Scientists at World Weather Attribution, who analyse the influence of climate change on extreme weather events, say June heatwaves with three consecutive days above 28 °C are about 10 times more likely to occur now compared to pre-industrial times.

2016, 2020, 2024 elections show Ghanaian electorates have matured and cannot be deceived – Kufuor warns NPP

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor won the 2000 and 2004 elections on the ticket of the NPP Former President John Agyekum Kufuor won the 2000 and 2004 elections on the ticket of the NPP

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has bemoaned the current state of his party, the New Patriotic Party, which he said was worrying.

Speaking at the commissioning of the NPP’s Patriotic Institute on June 25, 2025, the former president asserted that the party’s current state led to its defeat in the 2024 election.

He added that recent election results have shown that Ghanaian voters are not gullible and cannot be deceived.

“How come a party with a philosophy and vision for humanity, that’s the main strength of our tradition, we have been reduced to the current situation? A situation we all regret or must regret, how come?

“This thing didn’t happen just like that. If we take care to look at the electoral history from 2016, 2020 to 2024, and if we are sincere with ourselves, we would know that the electorate of Ghana has matured. Nobody can deceive it,” he said.

He reiterated that the people of Ghana voted out the NPP because of its current state and not because of its values, indicating that the party can win the upcoming 2028 election if it returns to its values.

“I assure you, I believe this electorate, the Ghanaian electorate, I’m not talking of party electorate, has not rejected the value systems of our tradition,” he said.

Zenith, Stanbic, UMB and CalBank qualify for Bankers League Gala quarterfinals

0

Four teams have secured early qualification to the quarterfinal stage of the 2025 Bankers League Gala following a competitive opening round of group matches at the Legon Stadium on Saturday, June 28.

Zenith Bank delivered a dominant display in Group A, sealing back-to-back victories against National Investment Bank (NIB) and Ecobank to secure their place in the last eight with a game in hand. Their clinical performance left little doubt about their intent to challenge for this year’s title.

In Group B, Stanbic Bank and Universal Merchant Bank (UMB) confirmed their progression after both sides recorded opening-day wins, ensuring safe passage into the knockout rounds ahead of the final group matches.

CalBank were equally impressive in Group C, dispatching ABSA and GT Bank with confident performances to top the group outright and book their quarterfinal ticket.

Group D remains the only undecided group. Consolidated Bank Ghana (CBG) and Republic Bank are currently joint leaders with four points each, having recorded a win and a draw. Standard Chartered Bank and Omnibsic, on one point apiece, still have a mathematical chance to qualify depending on the results in the final round of group matches.

The remaining group fixtures are scheduled for Saturday, July 5, at the same venue, with the quarterfinals to follow shortly after. The one-day Gala serves as a curtain-raiser to the 2025 Bankers Football League, which is set to kick off on July 12. League fixtures will be played at the McDan Astroturf and St Thomas Aquinas Senior High School pitch.

Despite their early elimination, NIB striker Kweku Ghansah remained upbeat. Speaking after his side’s loss, he acknowledged their lack of preparation but set sights firmly on the league campaign.

“Well, the game didn’t go well, but we are hoping to win our next game. Actually, we didn’t really prepare, but we’ll come back stronger,” he said. “Our main target is the league. You know, we’ve won the league three times consecutively. I’ve taken the Goal King twice. When I say we’ll come back stronger, we know what we are talking about.”

Reflecting on the tournament’s broader purpose, Ghansah praised the level of football on display and the camaraderie it fosters. “It’s a fun game, but you can see some talent in there. It’s just for exercise, networking, and fun. That’s what we’re out for.”

Government won’t support creative arts until industry proves its worth

Richie Mensah urges creatives to prove their value Richie Mensah urges creatives to prove their value

Ghanaian music producer and executive Richie Mensah has criticised the Ghana’s creative industry for not doing enough to attract government support.

According to him, he believes that until the sector proves its economic value, it should not expect any serious investment from the government.

Speaking in an interview on Joy FM, Richie said the creative industry needs to stop waiting on the government or associations and instead focus on individual efforts that show real value.

“I say all the time that leave government alone, leave associations alone. Leave everybody alone and do what you can do. He who embarks on a worthy cause deserves a push,” he said.

Richie explained that while he has faced many challenges in his career, he has also received support, but only after showing that he was worth investing in.

“As much as I have had a lot of challenges, I have also had a lot of support. But every support I have received in my life has been earned. I wasn’t given the support in a vacuum. I was given the support because I proved that if you support me, it’s worth your time and money,” he explained.

According to him, the main reason the government continues to overlook the creative arts is because the industry has not demonstrated that it can bring in economic returns.

“The reason government won’t support creative arts is because it’s not worth their time. Let’s be very honest. You have artistes and media people standing there talking about ‘do this for me, do this for us, we deserve this, we are so entitled’, stop talking,” he said.

Ayawaso East MCE leads cleanup exercise ahead of National Prayer and Thanksgiving Day

The National Prayer and Thanksgiving Day is scheduled for Tuesday July 1 The National Prayer and Thanksgiving Day is scheduled for Tuesday July 1

The Ayawaso East Municipal Assembly, in collaboration with Broadway Entertainment, organized a cleanup exercise in Nima in the Greater Accra Region on June 28, 2025, ahead of the much-anticipated launch of a National Prayer and Thanksgiving Day, which will be graced by President John Dramani Mahama at the National Mosque.

Leading the exercise was the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Abdul Ganiyu Ibrahim, who, along with assembly staff, community leaders, and residents, took to the streets to clean gutters, sweep roadsides, and raise awareness about sanitation in the municipality.

Speaking to the media, Ibrahim highlighted the significance of the initiative, stating that the cleanup was both a gesture of respect ahead of the President’s visit and a broader call to action on improving sanitation in the area.

“Sanitation is a big issue in our community. We are here with our partners from Broadway Entertainment to make sure the environment is clean before we welcome H.E. John Dramani Mahama to the National Mosque on Tuesday. Cleanliness is the foundation for every good thing we want to do for our people.”

The MCE also hinted at broader government efforts to address sanitation nationwide, revealing that the upcoming event may include the launch of a National Sanitation Day, which could be replicated at the municipal level.

“We are hoping that once the President inaugurates the National Sanitation Day Committee, we can begin our own Ayawaso East Municipal Sanitation Day,” he added.

Ibrahim made a passionate appeal for logistical support to enhance the Assembly’s sanitation efforts and called on all community stakeholders to join in the ongoing initiatives.

“Sanitation is not just for the Assembly or a few stakeholders — it’s a shared responsibility. We want everyone to get involved: chiefs, opinion leaders, business owners, and residents. When our community is clean, we all benefit.”

Adding his voice to the campaign was Abdul Fatawu Alhassan, a sanitation advocate popularly known as “Cash” and referred to by many as the Mayor of Nima.

He lauded the joint effort and reiterated the commitment of community members to long-term environmental cleanliness.

“Sanitation is something we take seriously,” said Cash. “We are here to collaborate with the municipal authorities and reclaim our community through cleanliness. This is just the beginning — there will be more cleanup exercises ahead.”

The National Prayer and Thanksgiving Day is scheduled for Tuesday, July 1, 2025, with a special prayer session and gathering at the National Mosque, where President Mahama is expected to address attendees.

World Bank backs Ghana $360m to strengthen macroeconomic stability

0

The World Bank has approved a $360 million financing package to support Ghana’s economic rebound, a move that signals renewed confidence in the country’s path to recovery and reform.

The funding, under the Second Resilient Recovery Development Policy Operation (DPO), aims to restore macroeconomic stability, revive investor confidence, and reinforce structural reforms to future-proof the economy.

Announced today, the approval by the World Bank Board of Executive Directors marks a significant boost to Ghana’s ongoing effort to rebuild from its fiscal crisis.

The funds come through the International Development Association (IDA) and target urgent reform areas including fiscal sustainability, financial sector stability, energy sector discipline, and climate and social resilience.

Finance Minister Hon. Cassiel Ato Forson welcomed the support, describing it as a major vote of confidence in Ghana’s reform journey under the IMF-supported programme.

“The successful implementation of the IMF reforms and the DPO series has laid a solid foundation for economic recovery.

“This additional support will help us deepen fiscal discipline, restore investor trust, and build a more inclusive and shock-resistant economy,” he said.

The operation is a key part of the World Bank’s broader crisis response framework for Ghana, and includes sweeping targets: restoring fiscal sustainability, supporting private-sector-led growth, stabilising the financial sector, fixing long-standing inefficiencies in the energy sector, and boosting climate and social resilience.

Robert Taliercio, the World Bank’s Director for Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, emphasised the urgency of the reforms.

“Entrenching fiscal and debt sustainability, creating jobs through private investment, and protecting the most vulnerable remain urgent priorities.

“These are essential steps to revitalise Ghana’s domestic private sector, strengthen resilience to climate change, and improve the lives of ordinary Ghanaians,” Taliercio stated.

The approved reforms also aim to boost domestic revenue generation, streamline energy sector operations for greater efficiency, and embed climate considerations into national policymaking.

The initiative underscores the growing shift from crisis firefighting to building long-term resilience and sustainability in Ghana’s economic architecture.

‘You may control the present, but history will judge you’ – Minority fires at EOCO boss over Hannan Wahab arrest

0

The Minority in Parliament has blasted the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), accusing it of political persecution in the arrest and bail conditions imposed on Abdul Hannan Wahab, ex-CEO of the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO).

In a press statement released on June 29, the Deputy Minority Leader, Patricia Appiagyei, minced no words: “You may control the present, but history will judge your conduct.”

The Minority says EOCO crossed the line when, on June 25, it orchestrated what they describe as a “coordinated arrest operation” in both Accra and Tamale, picking up Mr. Wahab and his wife “as though they were fugitives.”

Both are under investigation for alleged tax evasion, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state, but the Minority Caucus insists no charges have been proven.

“This is not justice—it is persecution,” the statement declares. “What happened is an abuse of investigative power. We’re witnessing the weaponisation of institutions to punish political opponents.”

The real outrage, however, surrounds the bail conditions.

Mr. Hannan Wahab was slapped with a GH¢50 million bail, requiring two sureties, both to be justified, meaning they must prove assets matching the full amount.

His wife was also granted bail at GH¢30 million with similarly heavy requirements.

“These are not bail conditions. These are financial shackles,” the Minority argues. “They amount to punishment before trial. Where in our laws does it say you must risk bankruptcy to prove your innocence?”

Citing Section 96 of the Criminal and Other Offences (Procedure) Act, 1960 (Act 30) and the Supreme Court’s ruling in Kpebu v. Attorney-General, the Minority Caucus says bail must be reasonable and reflect the financial standing of the accused.

“Mr. Wahab is not a flight risk. He’s a public servant with a known address, a family man, not a criminal. He deserves dignity, not humiliation,” the statement adds.

The Minority Caucus took direct aim at EOCO’s Acting Executive Director, Raymond Archer, warning that “how he handles this will define his legacy. Posterity is watching. Ghana is bigger than any political party.”

They say the trend is clear, state institutions are being manipulated under the current NDC administration to intimidate past government officials.

“We’re not against accountability. But this isn’t about justice. This is about vengeance,” the statement reads.

“When institutions become tools for settling political scores, we lose our democracy.”

Calling on civil society, media, and religious leaders to rise and resist the abuse, the Minority demanded an immediate review of the bail conditions, insisting they be “fair, lawful, and not disguised punishment.”

“Enough of the harassment. Enough of the intimidation. Let us protect the justice system from partisan poison,” they concluded.

The suspension comes after days of service disruptions that affected access to national ID registration services. The NIA expressed regret over any inconvenience caused during the period of industrial action and thanked the public for their patience and understanding.

“All NIA offices and registration centres across the country will resume full operations on Monday, 30th June 2025,” the authority confirmed, urging the public to take advantage of the resumption to access ID services.

Ghana’s Tourism Industry receives a diplomatic boost

The engagement was organized in collaboration with the Ghana Tourism Authority The engagement was organized in collaboration with the Ghana Tourism Authority

In a remarkable move to expand Ghana’s tourism footprint into Central Europe, the Ghana Embassy in the Czech Republic, under the leadership of Her Excellency Madam Doris Adzo Denyo Brese, has spearheaded a high-level tourism promotion initiative in Prague, bringing together key stakeholders from both Ghana and the Czech Republic.

The engagement, organized in collaboration with the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), was held at the iconic Malostranská Beseda Gastronomický Provoz in Prague.

It attracted over 30 top Czech tour operators, members of the Association of Tour Operators and Travel Agents (ACCKA), officials from the Czech Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Regional Development, and representatives of Ghana’s tourism sector.

The CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Maame Efua Houadjeto, was represented by Gilbert Abeiku Aggrey, Deputy CEO in charge of Marketing and Special Duties, and Betty Kobi, Director of Marketing.

They delivered a compelling presentation showcasing Ghana’s diverse tourism assets—from UNESCO World Heritage Sites and pristine beaches to vibrant festivals and rich cultural experiences.

Aggrey also unveiled two flagship campaigns—“December in Ghana” and “The Black Star Experience”—designed to position Ghana as the gateway to Africa for global travelers, especially from emerging markets like Central and Eastern Europe.

A major highlight of the evening was the engaging cultural performance by the University of Ghana Dance Ensemble, which captivated the Czech audience and offered a vivid glimpse into Ghana’s artistic soul.

The spotlight of the evening, however, fell on the Ghana Embassy in Prague, whose efforts were instrumental in orchestrating this milestone initiative.

Ambassador Doris Adzo Denyo Brese delivered a powerful address, emphasizing the Embassy’s commitment to using diplomacy as a tool to promote tourism, trade, and cultural exchange between Ghana and the Czech Republic.

She not only facilitated crucial connections between Czech tour operators and Ghanaian stakeholders but also provided practical insights into visa processes, assuring seamless support for Czech tourists interested in visiting Ghana.

“Tourism is a bridge between peoples and cultures, and today we are building that bridge with purpose and pride,” Ambassador Brese remarked. “The Ghana Embassy is proud to be at the forefront of this dynamic collaboration between our two countries.”

Speaking on behalf of the Czech Tour Operators Association, Lenka Fidranská warmly welcomed the initiative and lauded the Embassy for its proactive role in strengthening Ghana-Czech tourism ties.

Promotional materials—including Ghanaian chocolate, tourism passports, Kente sashes, maps, and locally made snacks—were distributed to attendees, offering them a taste of Ghana’s warm hospitality and creative industry.

This pioneering event marks the first direct destination marketing activation by Ghana in the Czech Republic and signals the start of a wider Central European campaign, with future engagements planned in Poland and other strategic markets.

The Ghana Tourism Authority expressed gratitude to the Ghana Embassy and reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with Ghana’s diplomatic missions to unlock new tourism and investment opportunities across Europe.

GIA promotes inclusive insurance access in 2025 awareness month campaign

0

The campaign is designed to deepen public understanding of insurance concepts The campaign is designed to deepen public understanding of insurance concepts

The Ghana Insurers Association (GIA) has officially launched the 2025 edition of Insurance Awareness Month in Accra.

This year’s month-long celebration is being held under the theme “Inclusivity and Accessibility: Purpose Beyond Profit,” which seeks to promote an inclusive environment where everyone can access insurance products, regardless of their personal or corporate circumstances.

Speaking at the launch event, held at the newly commissioned ultra-modern Insurance House in Kanda, Greater Accra Region, the 1st Vice Chairman of the GIA, Mr. Nashiru Iddrisu, emphasised that the purpose of the awareness month is to make insurance inclusive and accessible to all.

According to him, the campaign is designed to deepen public understanding of insurance concepts and educate people on how insurance can serve as a valuable tool for mitigating potential personal and professional risks.

Mr. Iddrisu, who is also the Managing Director of Hollard Life Assurance Ghana Ltd, added that the month-long initiative aims to raise awareness among industry stakeholders about systemic barriers that prevent vulnerable groups, such as persons with disabilities and those living in remote communities, from accessing insurance services.

The idea of dedicating a month to insurance awareness was first introduced a few years ago by the then leadership of the GIA, who recognized the need to educate the public on the importance of insurance and address key issues to improve insurance services and visibility in Ghana.

Some of the key activities planned for the 2025 Insurance Awareness Month include the GIA Insurance Games, which will be held at the University of Ghana Athletics Oval on July 5, 2025. This event aims to foster camaraderie and healthy competition among insurance industry players.

Additionally, the first-ever GIA Street Insurance Campaign will be launched in Kumasi, Takoradi, Cape Coast, and Accra from July 8 to July 11, 2025. The street campaign is expected to bring insurance education directly to the public in these major cities.

The month-long celebration will also feature the Insurance Solutions Forum and a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative focused on supporting the Nima-Kanda Community.

Another major highlight is the Insurance Fair and Clinics, organised in collaboration with the Graphic Communications Group Ltd (GCGL). This platform will allow insurance companies to showcase their products and engage directly with the insuring public.

According to Mr. Franklin Sowah, Director of Marketing at GCGL, this year’s fair promises to be bigger and more interactive than previous editions.

Furthermore, promoting a healthy lifestyle is a key objective for insurance industry practitioners.

As part of the celebrations, the industry’s annual games are organised to foster social connections, encourage exercise, relieve stress, and provide entertainment through sporting activities.

Insurance companies have already begun building excitement for the games, engaging in friendly banter and sharing promotional videos to stir up healthy competition and team spirit.

The Insurance Awareness Month Celebration (IAMC) is an annual event observed by all insurers and reinsurers in Ghana.

Ghana launches National Baseball League as government pledges full commitment to sports development

The Government of Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to the development of sports in the country with the official launch of the National Baseball League at Koshen Park, Labone Senior High School in Accra.

Representing the Minister for Youth and Sports, Kofi Adams, the Deputy Director of Research and Sports at the Ministry, Horen Kushiga, underscored the government’s dedication to building a robust sports sector.

He acknowledged funding as one of the key challenges but revealed that proactive steps have been taken to address the issue.

“One of the few challenges in the sports sector is funding, and we have taken initial steps to try and solve that problem. We are on the cusp of addressing this by securing cabinet approval to establish a Sports Fund that will create a resource base for all sports,” he said.

Kushiga assured stakeholders that the government remains fully invested in sports development. “The government and the Ministry of Youth and Sports are fully committed to developing sports for the benefit of all.”

The launch was spearheaded by the President of the Ghana Baseball and Softball Association (GBSA), Ernest Danso, who described the event as a “giant leap forward” for baseball in Ghana.

He emphasised that the newly established league is more than just a competition—it is a platform for talent discovery, youth empowerment, and national development.

“This league is not just about competition; it is a platform for talent discovery, a channel for growth, and a statement that Ghana is ready to take its place on the continental and global stage,” he stated.

Danso reflected on the grassroots origins of the sport in Ghana, acknowledging the dedication of early coaches and volunteers who nurtured baseball with limited resources and improvised equipment.

Through what he called “persistence, unwavering belief, and shared determination,” the sport has gained traction in schools and communities across the country.

“We believed in the values that baseball teaches—teamwork, discipline, patience, and opportunity.

“We are now building a sustainable ecosystem that will raise the level of play, attract investment, increase media interest, and open doors for the educational and athletic advancement of our youth,” he said.

He revealed the association’s plans to expand the league to include youth, women, and school divisions, build standard baseball fields across all regions, and pursue qualification for international tournaments.

Adding his voice to the event, Albert K. Frimpong, President of WBSC Africa and former head of the Ghana Baseball and Softball Federation, highlighted the discipline and life values that the sport instills in young people.

“This ball teaches discipline. Comport yourself at all times, and show respect on and off the field. Let us enjoy baseball and show the federation that their sacrifices are not in vain,” he urged.

Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) President Richard Akpokavie also graced the event and praised the initiative for its potential to positively impact the country’s youth.

“Sports have the power to make young people better human beings—for themselves, their families, and the country. Be the best of the best. Respect your body, your peers, and the game. And build friendships, because we are one people, one destiny,” Akpokavie said.

“Stop the pretending!” – NPP critic Dr. Kennedy calls for full democratic reboot

0

NPP stalwart Dr. Arthur Kobina Kennedy has delivered a scathing critique of his party’s recent governance, calling for a significant reform of its internal democratic processes and a public apology to Ghanaians for what he termed as “reckless and incompetent governance.”

Kennedy dismissed calls from within the party to expedite the selection of a new presidential candidate, arguing that such a decision would merely conceal the unresolved issues within the NPP’s framework during his appearance on TV3’s KeyPoints programme.

Lawyers to withdraw services on June 30

0

The Acting Chief Justice of Ghana, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, has formally granted permission to members of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) to abstain from court appearances on Monday, June 30, 2025, in observance of this year’s Martyrs’ Day celebrations.

In a circular issued on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, to all judges and magistrates across the country, the Acting Chief Justice noted that the exemption is in line with long-standing tradition, allowing legal practitioners to participate in the solemn national event commemorating the lives of judges who were murdered in the line of duty.

“In conformity with tradition, approval has been granted for members of the Ghana Bar Association to withdraw their services from court appearances on Monday, 30th June 2025,” the directive stated.

The Martyrs’ Day observance is a significant annual event marked to honour the memory of Justices Fred Poku Sarkodee, Cecilia Koranteng-Addow, and Kwadwo Agyei Agyapong, as well as Major Sam Acquah (Rtd.), who were abducted and murdered on June 30, 1982, during a dark chapter in Ghana’s political history.

The letter was copied to the Acting Judicial Secretary, the Court Manager of the Law Court Complex, Supervising High Court Judges, and all Registrars to ensure compliance and coordination.

Tacha drags “Twitter witches and wizards” over Asherkine video drama

Media personality and former BBNaija housemate Tacha has called out critics on Twitter over the trending controversy surrounding a viral video featuring Nigerian influencer Asherkine and a female fan.

Becky had claimed she had never been in a relationship — a statement reportedly made to secure a date with Asherkine.

Becky’s claim was later challenged by a man who claims to have been her boyfriend for two years. In a twist that has sparked conversations across social media, the man released a chat purportedly between himself and Becky, where she allegedly told him she had travelled to see her mother — a cover-up, he claims, for her outing with Asherkine. read here

Becky however, firmly denied knowing the individual behind the viral claims. She insisted that the name being used to spread the alleged lies does not even reflect her real identity. “I do not know this boy,” she stated, adding, “I have never had a boyfriend before and nothing will change my statement.” read here

Reacting to the issue in a video shared on Instagram, Tacha compared online trolls to the “wicked aunties and uncles” African parents used to warn about, saying, “They’re no longer in the village, they’re all on Twitter Nigeria.”

She criticised how people took a harmless moment from Asherkine’s video and twisted it into a negative narrative, fabricating fake chats and claims just to drag the woman in the clip.

Tacha went on to say the issue blew up because, in her words, “The average Nigerian man sees Nigerian women as gold diggers,” which is why many believed and pushed a false story about the girl allegedly denying her boyfriend because of money.

She urged the woman involved to take legal action and called on the public to stop tearing people down online out of boredom or bitterness.

“The wicked people our parents warned us about are now online… Twitter influencers, bloggers – all of them,” she added.

I owe the church for my music success – Kuami Eugene

0

Ghanaian musician Kuami Eugene has stated that despite his mainstream success in secular music, he still considers himself a minister of God.

In a recent interview on Joy Prime, the award-winning highlife artiste explained that his journey began in the church, where he was groomed both spiritually and musically. According to him, his identity as a gospel minister has not changed.

“Sometimes I see a post on social, somebody wants to bring something, Eugene Marfo will just pop up. I’m still a minister of God and the transition started from the church. The church taught me every single thing that I know how to play the piano, guitar and everything. When I was schooling, I was still doing the music while I was playing drums for the church. I was still doing the music thing, but the push wasn’t there like I’m getting now,” he said.

Kuami Eugene also shared how a trip to the Volta Region for a gospel event played a key role in changing the course of his life and career. Invited by a friend who was a pupil teacher at the time, the trip became a turning point.

“She was a pupil teacher and she invited me there for like a three-day convention with her church. I was Minister Eugene Marfo then. That was actually where I had my first pay, so shout out to that female friend of mine,” he recalled.

Following that experience, he was selected for MTN Hitmaker, where he emerged second runner-up before being signed by Lynx Entertainment. That marked the beginning of his rise in Ghana’s music industry.

He credited God, his family, and key mentors like Richie Mensah and Eric Goka for their support in his journey. (Read Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park hails gov’t move to restore founder’s day to September 21)

Kuami Eugene, born Eugene Marfo, has since become one of Ghana’s most prominent musicians, known for hit songs such as Angela, Wish Me Well, Open Gate, and Monica.

He has won several awards including Highlife Artiste of the Year and Artiste of the Year at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.

GH¢80m bail for Hannan Wahab and wife is pre-trial punishment – Minority cries foul

0

The Minority in Parliament is concerned over what it calls “pre-trial punishment” disguised as bail conditions imposed on Abdul Hannan Wahab, the former CEO of the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO)and his wife.

Following a dramatic arrest operation by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on June 25 in both Accra and Tamale, Alhaji Wahab and his wife were detained for alleged tax evasion, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state.

But according to the Minority, the mode of arrest and the subsequent bail terms were nothing short of persecution.

“Mr Wahab was picked up like a fugitive. His wife, too. This is not justice, it’s humiliation,” said the Deputy Minority Leader, Patricia Appiagyei, in a press statement released on June 29.

She described the bail amounts, GH¢50 million for Wahab and GH¢30 million for his wife, as “punitive and excessive.”

“These are allegations. No charges have been proven. So why impose bail conditions that are more punishing than a conviction?” she asked, accusing EOCO of turning due process into a political weapon.

The Minority says the justification for such high bail conditions is non-existent.

“Section 96 of Act 30 is clear. Bail is meant to ensure appearance in court, not to destroy lives. These conditions are simply outrageous,” the statement said.

The group insists Wahab poses no flight risk.

“He has served this country with distinction. He’s a family man, not a criminal. He’s not going to disappear,” the statement said. “What exactly is the state afraid of?”

The statement accused the NDC government of orchestrating a quiet campaign of retribution.

“This is not about accountability—it’s about settling scores. The pattern is clear. People who served under the previous administration are being targeted.”

They warned EOCO’s Acting Executive Director, Raymond Archer, to tread carefully.

“History will judge your conduct. Posterity is watching,” they said. “Ghana is bigger than any political party.”

While stating that they support accountability and legal process, the Minority stressed that justice must not be selective or vindictive.

“Weaponising institutions for politics is a threat to our democracy. What was wrong yesterday is still wrong today, no matter who is in power.”

The Caucus is now demanding an immediate review of the bail conditions.

“This is not bail, it’s punishment. Mr Wahab and his wife must be released on reasonable terms that reflect their rights and dignity.”

They called on civil society, the clergy, the media, and all Ghanaians to resist what they described as a dangerous trend.

“Let us speak out. Let us rise above political vendettas. Ghana’s institutions must serve justice, not fear.”

The Minority’s verdict is stark: “This is a political hit job dressed in legal robes. And we will not be silent.”

Modified Taxation to be rolled out July 1, anchors govt revenue drive

0

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has disclosed that key policies in the country’s tax administration laws are expected to be implemented from July 1, 2025, to boost domestic revenue drive for the government.

These include the Modified Taxation Scheme, VAT on Real Estate, and VAT on Non-Life Insurance.

Modified Taxation Scheme (MTS) – Simplified Approach for Informal Sector.

The MTS introduces a flexible framework targeting micro, small and medium businesses across the country. This is in line with the Income Tax Act, 2015 (Act 896).

Acting Commissioner-General of the GRA, Anthony Kwasi Sarpong, clarified in a recent media engagement that the scheme is not an additional tax but a simplified method of calculating personal income tax for eligible traders and entrepreneurs.

“We, as GRA, are tax implementors, and as the President has announced and reiterated by the Minister of Finance, the country must mobilise more revenue so that we can take care of critical budgetary allocations, as many of the donor partners have closed their doors to Ghana. What we need to do is to look at the existing revenue handles and implement them to the latter.

“We believe that if we’re able to do these, then we can seal many of the revenue loopholes that are being closed onto us as a country. I can assure you that these are not new taxes and it is not intended to overburden Ghanaians but rather to support the resetting of the economy,” he noted.

Key Highlights of the Scheme:

• Eligibility: Ghanaian residents earning income solely from business activities within the country.

• Tax Categories:
o Presumptive Tax Based on Instalments (PTI): Fixed quarterly payments (up to GH¢45) for businesses with an annual turnover below GH¢20,000.
o Presumptive Tax Based on Turnover (PTT): A flat 3% rate for businesses earning between GH¢20,000 and GH¢500,000 annually.
o Modified Cash Basis (MCB): For businesses exceeding GH¢20,000, applying graduated rates with allowable deductions.

• Multiple payment options, including mobile money, USSD codes (*222#), and bank deposits.

• Simplified registration via GRA offices or a dedicated mobile app.

Alongside the Modified Taxation Scheme, GRA is implementing several other strategic initiatives designed to plug revenue leakages and broaden the tax base. These measures form part of the government’s comprehensive strategy to reduce reliance on debt financing and strengthen domestic revenue mobilisation.

The Special Voluntary Disclosure Program (SVDP), which was rolled out in 2024, is being deepened. It is an initiative that seeks to give expression to the income tax law and residents who earn incomes abroad. This program provides an opportunity for these persons to voluntarily disclose incomes earned abroad, which they haven’t paid tax on, without incurring penalties.

VAT on the Rental of Immovable Property and the Supply of Immovable Property by Estate Developers will also be implemented in accordance with the provisions of the Value Added Tax (VAT) Amendment Act, 2023 (Act 1107), all estate developers are to charge VAT on the supply of immovable property.

Estate developers must charge a 5% VAT on:
• Immovable property by an estate developer calculated on the taxable supply
• Immovable property for rental purposes, other than for accommodation in a dwelling or a commercial rental establishment

A 1% COVID-19 levy is also applicable on the supply of immovable property.
Additionally, an appointed withholding agent who fails to charge and account for the tax to the Commissioner-General by the 15th of the month following the due date shall be liable to pay the VAT that should have been withheld, along with a penalty of thirty per cent (30%) of the amount.
Exemptions for residential dwellings and agricultural properties.

VAT on Non-Life Insurance

As stipulated in the VAT (Amendment) Act, 2023 (Act 1107), Insurance premiums covered for VAT purposes include fire, marine, liability, property, indemnity, engineering, travel, burglary, personal accident and workmen’s compensation insurance.

Insurance companies must take note and charge a 15% VAT on all insurance premiums covered under this provision.

To make the implementation more effective, the companies are expected to:
• Update their accounting and invoicing systems to incorporate the VAT;
• Train staff on the application and reporting on the VAT;
• Communicate proactively with clients about the changes; and
• Ensure timely registration for VAT, if not already registered

The combination of these measures represents a balanced approach to revenue generation. The Authority is creating multiple pathways for compliance while ensuring critical sectors contribute their fair share.
