Parliamentary Committee probes YEA-Zoomlion contract dispute to ensure transparency

0

The Parliamentary Committee on Sanitation and Water Resources has stated that its involvement in the ongoing contract dispute between the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) and waste management company Zoomlion Ghana Limited is aimed at promoting fairness and transparency in public contracts.

This intervention follows a petition by investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni to President John Dramani Mahama, calling for the termination of the 19-year-old contract between the two entities, citing alleged fraudulent practices.

As part of its oversight responsibilities, the committee held a closed-door meeting with YEA officials on Tuesday, May 13. The session forms part of a broader inquiry, with the committee expected to present its findings and recommendations to Parliament when it reconvenes.

Chairman of the Committee, John Oti Bless, addressed the media after the meeting, emphasising the committee’s objective of addressing the matter impartially.

He underscored the committee’s commitment to both supporting Ghanaian businesses and upholding accountability.

“Ours is to find a solution to the problem and present the report. I believe that at the end of the day, the presidency will want to hear our input based on the report that will be presented in parliament.

“But we want to clear the issues on the ground because we all want the betterment of our country. As much as I support every Ghanaian-owned business, we want to also state that the right things must be done and if there are wrong, we have to correct them,” he said.

Sack Sammy Gyamfi like you did to Victoria Hammah, or face consequences – Ellen Daaku warns Mahama

President John Mahama and Elle Ama President John Mahama and Elle Ama

Ellen Ama Ofosuaa Daaku, a member of the Communications Team of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has warned President John Dramani Mahama, calling for the dismissal of the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, following a viral video in which Gyamfi is seen handing out US dollars to a repentant priest, Evangelist Patricia Asiedua Oduro Koranteng, popularly known as Nana Agradaa.

According to her, she perceives Gyamfi’s action as a breach of the NDC’s newly launched Code of Conduct.

“Just last week, Mahama launched the NDC’s Code of Conduct. And for you, Sammy [Gyamfi], everyone in this country knows you are Mahama’s favorite. Not just his favorite, you’ve actually worked hard for that position,” she said while speaking in an interview on Angel TV on May 13, 2025.

However, Daaku warned that Sammy Gyamfi risked being made a scapegoat.

“If Sammy Gyamfi doesn’t take care, he’ll be used as a scapegoat… because barely two weeks after launching the Code of Conduct, this is happening,” she added, without specifying the offense.

Drawing a comparison to past disciplinary actions within the NDC, Daaku referenced Victoria Hammah, a former Deputy Minister, who was dismissed during Mahama’s first term after a leaked recording suggested she would quit politics if she had access to $1 million.

“There was a lady called Victoria Hammah who said that if she had $1 million, she would stop politics. She was sacked, and to this day, she hasn’t recovered from the incident. Unlike Sammy Gyamfi, who now has the dollars and is allegedly dashing them out,” Daaku alleged.

She added, “If Mahama doesn’t sack Sammy Gyamfi, I, Ama, am ready. By next week, if we come and Sammy Gyamfi is still at post, he will have me to contend with.”

ISSER calls for stricter exchange rate controls to sustain Cedi appreciation

0

The Institute for Statistical, Social, and Economic Research (ISSER) is urging policymakers to enforce a robust exchange rate management framework to safeguard the Ghanaian cedi’s recent gains.

According to the Institute, without firm regulatory oversight and improved market discipline, the local currency’s current appreciation risks being short-lived.

Director of ISSER, Professor Peter Quartey, made the call on the sidelines of the Mastercard Foundation Youth Futures Initiative launch and Stakeholder Engagement held in Accra, stressing the need for consistent macroeconomic policies to anchor confidence in the local currency.

“So to ensure stability in our exchange rate, we have to continue to have the kind of monetary policies we are having now; the Bank of Ghana continues to shore up our gold reserves. Take advantage of the geopolitics because the US Dollar is losing some value, but it may reverse given that now the US has a temporary trade deal with China,” he said.

He added that: ”Then also enforcing the exchange rules ; it is only in Ghana where one can walk to a corner and buy dollar and pound and walk around with it. In other jurisdictions they take your passport so they know what is it going to be used for”.

In recent weeks, the cedi has shown marked resilience, reversing months of depreciation — a development that has reignited public expectations for downward price adjustments, especially for imported goods.

Commenting on demands by the consuming public on the traders to reduce their prices Prof. Quartey opined that: ”Well it’s justified to some extent in the sense that in Ghana we know prices are sticky downwards.

“Anytime exchange rate depreciates quickly traders increase prices but as soon as it appreciates then there is some sluggishness in reducing prices but we also appreciate the fact that some have imported using the old exchange rates.”

Uganda’s parliament introduces bill to let military courts try civilians

0

The Ugandan government introduced a bill in parliament on Tuesday that would allow military tribunals to prosecute civilians, months after the country’s Supreme Court ruled the practice unconstitutional.

The top court’s January verdict forced the government to transfer the trial of opposition politician and former presidential candidate Kizza Besigye to a civilian court, where state prosecutors have charged him with several crimes, including treason.

Political allies and lawyers for Besigye, who has lost to President Yoweri Museveni in four elections, say the accusations are politically motivated.

Minister of Defence Jacob Marksons Oboth introduced the “Uganda People’s Defence Forces Bill, 2025” on the floor of the House on Tuesday, where it was referred to a House committee for scrutiny.

Civilians may be tried under military law in exceptional circumstances, such as when they are in “unlawful possession of arms, ammunition or equipment ordinarily being the monopoly of the defence forces,” according to the draft law seen by Reuters.

Besigye was forcefully removed from the Kenyan capital Nairobi in November and presented in a military court in neighbouring Uganda a few days later, where he was charged with offences including the illegal possession of firearms.

Kenya’s government denied involvement in what it called Besigye’s abduction.

The new bill also includes crimes of abetting or aiding a soldier to commit crimes ,including treason, murder and aggravated robbery, among others.

Human rights activists and opposition politicians have long accused Museveni’s government of using military courts to prosecute opposition leaders and supporters on politically motivated charges.

The new law will be used to “persecute regime opponents and deal with the growing resistance against the regime,” said David Lewis Rubongoya from the National Unity Platform (NUP), Uganda’s largest opposition party.

Information Minister Chris Baryomunsi did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

NUP’s leader Bobi Wine said on Friday he plans to contest the presidential ballot due in January, in which Museveni is widely expected to seek reelection.

Let his apology be enough – Tamakloe on Sammy Gyamfi’s dollar gift controversy

Edudzi Tamakloe, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority Edudzi Tamakloe, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority

In a bid to put an end to the ongoing controversy surrounding Sammy Gyamfi’s $800 gift to former fetish priestess-turned-evangelist Nana Agradaa, Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe, the Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), has called for closure on the matter following Gyamfi’s public apology.

Speaking on Face to Face with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Channel One TV, Tamakloe praised Gyamfi for his swift response to the incident, commending his prompt apology.

“Graciously, my friend and brother Sammy Gyamfi, less than 24 hours after the incident became public, thought it wise to apologise to the good people of this country and to H.E. President John Dramani Mahama as well. I think that is the right thing to do,” he said.

While acknowledging that the apology does not justify the action, Tamakloe emphasized that Gyamfi’s display of contrition was a step in the right direction.

“He has apologised in his write-up. I think that should bring finality to the matter. That should suffice,” Tamakloe stated.

He further clarified that the apology, though significant, does not excuse the actions of the Ghana Gold Board CEO.

Nonetheless, Tamakloe believes that the public acknowledgment of the mistake and the ensuing apology should help ease the anger and concerns expressed by the public.

“Having apologised for the issue provides no justification whatsoever. But I think that spirit—the remorseful spirit—should assuage whatever anger or sensitivities of our people,” he concluded.

The controversy erupted when Gyamfi was seen gifting Nana Agradaa, a well-known and controversial figure, $800 in cash.

This sparked widespread public backlash and raised concerns about the propriety of such a gesture, especially given Agradaa’s contentious past.

NPP panicking over corruption exposure, counting on CJ’s protection – Fifi Kwetey claims

0

The General Secretary of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has accused the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) of making unnecessary noise over the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo because they feel they no longer have any protection within the judiciary.

The NPP has strongly condemned the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo by President John Dramani Mahama, describing the move as unconstitutional, absurd, and repugnant.

President Mahama, on Tuesday, April 22, suspended the Chief Justice following the establishment of a prima facie case in response to three separate petitions seeking her removal from office.

However, the NPP believes such an action sets a dangerous precedent and marks a setback for democratic governance in the country. The party, which recently staged a demonstration with some smaller opposition parties against the Chief Justice’s suspension, has vowed to explore other means to prevent her removal from office.

In an interview with Joy News, the NDC General Secretary, Fifi Kwetey, claimed the NPP is fighting the possible removal of the Chief Justice because they fear losing court cases in her absence.

“The NPP feels that her departure makes it difficult for them to feel safe when cases are brought against them. Their fear is that the person who could have been there to possibly manipulate the system in their favor is no longer there. That is their concern,” he stated.

‘Let justice take its course even if it reaches the Chief Justice’, says Fifi Kwetey

0

Justice must be allowed to take its course, even if it reaches the highest levels of the judiciary, says Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, General Secretary of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on Tuesday, May 13, he defended the government’s handling of the case involving the Chief Justice and said no one should be above the law, not even the one who presides over it.

“This country’s very soul thrives on freedom and justice,” the Ketu South MP said.

“But if it’s pretty clear that the one who is supposed to be in charge of the justice of our country herself is not able to live up to the high mantra of doing things according to the law, then charity must begin at home.”

Mr. Kwetey said the probe into the Chief Justice’s conduct is not driven by politics but by a deep commitment to accountability.

“As far as I’m concerned, if she has done everything okay, there’s no problem,” he noted. “But if there’s a problem and it’s established, then that’s it.”

He insisted the process must be allowed to unfold without interference.

“I trust the people who make up the Council of State, including a former Chief Justice of our country, a former Speaker of Parliament. I think those are noble people who will not simply go on a witch hunt. They will be able to do a proper job.”

He also defended President Mahama’s integrity in handling the matter.

“I know John Mahama as a person. He is not a petty-minded person who simply wants to take an innocent person and punish.”

The NDC General Secretary said a prima facie case has already been established, and the next steps must follow the law.

“Clearly, once a case is established against her, she has to go. And if the case is shown that she actually has no case to answer, there is no problem.”

He accused the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) of panicking over the situation.

“The NPP worries that they feel her departure makes it difficult for them now to feel safe when cases are brought against them. Because now they are afraid that the person who could possibly be manipulating the system to help them is no more.”

When host Evans Mensah pointed out that the same logic could be used to accuse the NDC of wanting her removed for their advantage, Mr. Kwetey responded: “We are looking for justice. Justice simply means that if you truly abuse the system, you should go. If you are guilty, you should be out.”

He rejected any suggestion that the government was using the situation to neutralise judicial opposition.

“This is not about fear. It’s about principle. The law must be applied, even at the highest levels.”

For Mr. Kwetey, the message is clear: the pursuit of justice must be blind to position or power.

And in this case, the Chief Justice should face scrutiny like any other public servant, he stated.

“Let justice take its course, even if it reaches the Chief Justice,” he said.

Ghana president tells firms to pump oil ‘like there’s no tomorrow’

0

ABIDJAN – Ghana’s President John Mahama urged global firms to ramp up crude oil production in the West African nation before the global shift to renewable energy renders the resource worthless.

He warned that Ghana risks seeing its oil resources stuck in the ground if drilling is not fast-tracked while demand still exists.

Many countries have pledged to reduce their use of oil and gas to meet international targets for reducing carbon emissions that drive deadly climate change.

“Oil is in transition. Everybody who has any assets should be pumping like there’s no tomorrow,” Mahama told the Africa CEO Forum in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

“I will lay a red carpet to anybody who wants to drill and pump oil because in the next decade or two, the world will have made a transition to renewables.”

Mahama, who took office in January, accused the previous government of Nana Akufo-Addo of stalling oil exploration through regulatory bottlenecks and disputes with key investors such as British-based company Tullow and ENI of Italy.

He said the sector suffered “a lot of disinvestment” as the previous government had “squabbles” with Tullow.

Ghana’s petroleum sector has seen a steady decline in output, according to the statutory body that monitors petroleum revenues in Ghana, the Public Interest and Accountability Committee.

It said crude oil production dropped to 48.25 million barrels in 2023 from 71.44 million in 2019 largely due to reduced investment in new wells.

Mahama blamed regulatory uncertainty for the exodus of some key players.

“ENI was held in contempt and they had to move all their expatriate management to Cote d’Ivoire,” he noted, adding that now the company was “back and they are drilling again”.

Ghana’s major offshore oil assets include the Jubilee Field, operated by Tullow Oil, as well as the TEN and Sankofa fields, with players including Kosmos Energy, PetroSA, and the state-owned GNPC.

While calling for aggressive oil drilling, Mahama stressed Ghana must not abandon its clean energy goals.

He said the country’s Renewable Energy Act required that “at least 10 percent of our energy mix should come from renewable sources.”

‘No more protection from the bench’ – Fifi Kwetey says NPP in fear after CJ’s suspension

0

The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, says the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is in panic mode because their last line of legal protection is crumbling.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on Tuesday, May 13, he accused the NPP of fearing the wheels of justice now that Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Sackey Torkornoo, whom they allegedly relied on, is no longer in a position to “shield” them.

“The NPP worries that they feel her departure makes it difficult for them now to feel safe when cases are brought against them,” the Ketu South MP said.

“Because now they are afraid that the person who could possibly be manipulating the system to help them is no more.”

Mr. Kwetey dismissed concerns that the NDC is targeting the Chief Justice for political advantage.

“We are looking for justice,” he insisted. “Justice simply means that if you truly abuse the system, you should go. If you are guilty, you should be out.”

His comments come in the wake of a prima facie case established against the Chief Justice, whose position is now under serious scrutiny.

Mr. Kwetey was clear that her removal, if proven guilty, must follow due process, but he also emphasised that no one, not even the highest officer in the judiciary, is above accountability.

“If it’s pretty clear that the one who is supposed to be in charge of the justice of our country herself is not able to live up to the high mantra of doing things according to the law, then charity must begin at home,” he argued.

“As far as I’m concerned, if she has done everything okay, there’s no problem. But if there’s a problem and it’s established, then that’s it.”

Responding to a challenge from host Evans Mensah, who asked if the NDC also feared leaving the Chief Justice in place because they might struggle when legal cases go to the Supreme Court, Mr. Kwetey replied: “No, we are looking for justice.”

He added, “This is an instance where a prima facie case has been established against her.”

He praised the integrity of the Council of State and other advisory bodies, saying, “I trust the people who make up the Council of State, including a former Chief Justice of our country, a former Speaker of Parliament. I think those are noble people who will not simply go on a witch hunt.”

He also defended President John Mahama’s integrity and intentions.

“I know John Mahama as a person. He is not a petty-minded person who simply wants to take an innocent person and punish.”

Mr. Kwetey used the moment to reflect on what he sees as a fundamental principle at stake: the moral soul of the country.

“This country’s very soul thrives on what is freedom for its citizens to be able to fulfil their potential…But equally important is the need for justice,” he said.

“The unleashing of our creativity must go hand in hand with fairness and accountability.”

To Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, this is not about vendetta but about principle. If wrongdoing is proven, justice must be served—even if it reaches the highest levels of the judiciary, he said.

He added that for the NPP, the political fallout from that process may be only beginning.

Judge resentences Menendez brothers over 1989 murders

0

A Los Angeles judge has resentenced two brothers who are serving life in prison for the 1989 murders of their parents in a Beverly Hills mansion, making them eligible for parole.

Judge Michael Jesic gave Erik and Lyle Menendez a new sentence of 50 years to life. The brothers will now have to argue for their release in front of the state’s parole board.

The pair acknowledged killing Kitty and Jose Menendez, but said they acted out of self-defence after years of abuse.

Prosecutors argued the brothers planned the shotgun killings to access their parents’ fortune, are yet to take responsibility and should not be released. The case, which has prompted books and documentaries, still divides America.

After the judge agreed to resentence them, the brothers delivered an emotional statement to the court. They went through details of the brutal killings and their decision to reload and continue shooting their parents at point-blank range in their living room.

Both apologised for their actions and talked about their hopes to work with sex abuse victims and help those incarcerated if they were to be released.

“I had to stop being selfish and immature to really understand what my parents went though in those last moments,” Erik Menendez told the court.

He describes the “shock, confusion and betrayal” they must have felt seeing their sons holding guns and opening fire.

Lyle Menendez’s voice cracked as he talked about the impact of his “unfathomable” actions on their family.

“I lied to you and forced you into a spotlight of public humiliation,” he said to his family.

He said they had “cried with me and expressed their suffering” and he was “grateful for your love and forgiveness”.

Judge Jesic called the brothers’ work while in prison “remarkable”, but noted their original sentence was justified at the time.

He said under the guidelines, they were eligible for resentencing, issuing his new sentence of 50 years to life. The brothers have already served more than 30 years in prison.

The brothers’ lawyer Mark Geragos said “today is a great day after 35 years”. They were “one huge step closer to bringing the boys home”, he added.

Anamaria Baralt, the brothers’ cousin who testified inside court earlier in the day, said their family was elated.

“It is a difficult process,” she said of the parole hearing that awaits the brothers, but noted they will “eagerly step through those doors if it means we can have them home”.

Inside court earlier, relatives pleaded with the judge to allow the siblings’ release.

Ms Baralt, who said she has been close with them since they were children, told the judge they deserved a “second chance at life”.

“It’s been a nightmare,” she said. “I am desperate for this process to be over.”

Ms Baralt told the court she speaks with the brothers frequently and testified that they had taken “ownership of their actions”.

She said Lyle Menendez had acknowledged to her he had asked a witness to lie when testifying at their previous trial.

But she added: “They are very different men from the boys they were.”

Asylum hotel companies vow to hand back some profits

0

Two companies that receive taxpayers’ money to house asylum seekers in hotels have said they will hand back some of their profits to the Home Office.

Under contracts signed by the previous Conservative government, Clearsprings, Mears and Serco must pay back any profits of more than 5%.

A report released last week said the three companies had made combined profits of £383m since 2019, after the expected costs of housing asylum seekers tripled.

Appearing before a parliamentary committee, Clearsprings and Mears said they would be paying money back. Serco said they had not made enough profit to do so.

The cost of asylum accommodation has concerned ministers for a number of years and was an issue raised repeatedly by Reform UK during the recent local elections in England.

A Home Office spokesperson said: “We inherited a broken asylum system, with tens of thousands stuck in a backlog and claims not being processed – wasting millions in taxpayer money.

“We’ve taken immediate action to fix it – increasing asylum decision making by 52% and removing 24,000 people with no right to be here, meaning there are now fewer asylum hotels open than since the election.

“By restoring grip on the system and speeding up decision making we will end the use of hotels and are forecast to save the taxpayer £4bn by the end of 2026.”

Representatives of the three companies responsible for finding asylum accommodation made a rare appearance at the Home Affairs Select Committee.

The director of health and safety compliance at Mears, Jason Burt, told MPs on the committee that the company expected to pay back £13.8m, “subject to Home Office audit”.

Clearsprings’ managing director, Steve Lakey, said his firm had £32m “ready to go” but that they were “waiting for the Home Office” before it could be transferred.

The Home Office auditing processing is understood to still be ongoing, with no indication of when it will be completed.

Overall profits at the three companies involved are still expected to rise, due to an increase in the amount of hotels being used to house asylum seekers.

When the taxpayer-funded contracts were signed in 2019, the vast majority of people were housed in accommodation within communities.

Around a third are now housed in hotels, which come at a far greater expense to the public finances.

The National Audit Office (NAO) said last week that three quarters of all the money spent on asylum accommodation currently goes on hotels.

Labour and Conservative governments have both pledged to end the use of hotels to house asylum seekers.

Serco, Mears and Clearsprings all said they supported a move away from hotel use, despite the positive impact it has had on their bottom lines.

‘Disastrous contracts’

Decisions taken by Boris Johnson’s government to stop processing many asylum claims are seen as a major driving force behind the initial increase in the use of hotels.

Clearsprings’ founder and director, Graham King, has previously donated to the Conservative Party, through other companies he has owned.

The Sunday Times reported last weekend that King had recently become a billionaire thanks to soaring profits at the company.

A senior Home Office source said the Labour government “inherited chaos right across the system”.

They said the Conservatives signed “disastrous contracts that were not properly scrutinised – wasting millions in taxpayer money”.

The source pointed to a recent government decision to block Clearsprings from using one provider, as evidence that ministers are willing “to take whatever action necessary to guarantee value for money for the taxpayer”.

When quizzed by MPs about the government’s criticism of the contracts, the three companies defended the services they were providing.

Mr Burt said he believed Mears was providing a “reasonable” service to the Home Office.

He also told MPs that companies do not take into account the potential impact on local areas when suggesting asylum hotel locations to the Home Office.

Burt said the government had an opportunity to raise any concerns, but that it was not the job of companies such as Mears to carry out those assessments.

South Africa’s MTN Group reports 33% rise in first-quarter core profit

0

South African mobile network operator MTN Group reported a 33% jump in first-quarter core profit due to strong service revenue growth, lower device cost of sales in its domestic market, and a more stable economic environment.

The jump in group earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation on a constant-currency basis in the quarter to end March reflects a 5.3 percentage point rise in margin to 44.1%, MTN said, without giving the value of EBITDA.

Group service revenue rose 10.4% overall in the quarter, or by 19.8% in constant currency terms. That was buoyed by 40.4% growth in MTN Nigeria and 39.5% in MTN Ghana.

MTN South Africa continued to face challenges, especially in the prepaid segment, the company said, with service revenue up 2.6%.

Customers “remained value-seeking and dynamic in the context of constrained economic growth and heightened competition in the sector”, the group said.

Its South Africa unit intends to explore collaboration with rival Vodacom on backup energy, the company said.

“This could result in benefits around the… supply of alternative energy in the sector, which is critical to the efficient and reliable operation of network operators,” MTN added.

The Department of Trade and Industry’s Energy Users Block Exemption allows energy users to collaborate in ways that might otherwise be prohibited by the Competition Act. This includes joint procurement of backup or alternative energy and sharing generation capacity.

Group President and CEO Ralph Mupita said the group is also strengthening its partnerships with low-earth orbit (LEO) satellite providers, including Elon Musk’s Starlink, Franco-British satellite operator Eutelsat’s OneWeb, AST & Science, and Lynk, to expand services to enterprises.

He did not elaborate.

In March, MTN’s South African unit and American LEO satellite provider Lynk Global trialled Africa’s first phone call via satellite, a potential way of providing coverage in underserved and rural areas.

Germany arrests self-declared ‘king’ and bans his extremist group

0

Self-declared king Peter Fitzek told the BBC he had no interest in modern Germany

A self-declared “king” of Germany and three of his senior “subjects” have been arrested and their group banned for attempting to overthrow the state.

Peter Fitzek, 59, was among those arrested in morning raids across seven states on Tuesday, which involved about 800 security personnel.

The government banned their group, the Reichsbürger, or “citizens of the Reich”, which seeks to establish the Königreich Deutschland, or “Kingdom of Germany”.

Alexander Dobrindt, German’s interior minister, accused the group of attempting to “undermine the rule of law” by creating an alternative state and spreading “antisemitic conspiracy narratives to back up their supposed claim to authority”.

His ministry announced the dissolution of the group, and accused it of financing itself through “economic criminal structures”.

Fitzek, a former chef and karate instructor, calls himself “king” and identified himself to judges as “Peter the First” in a previous court case.

He had himself crowned in 2012 while dressed in ermine robes and brandishing a medieval sword. Since then he has been buying land and property across Germany.

Reichsbürgers have their own currency, flag and ID cards, and want to set up separate banking and health systems.

Fitzek claims to have thousands of followers – or “subjects”.

In an interview with the BBC in 2022 he denied having any violent intentions, but also described the German state as “destructive and sick”.

“I have no interest in being part of this fascist and satanic system,” he told the BBC’s Jenny Hill, when she visited his “kingdom” in eastern Germany.

Fitzek has repeatedly clashed with the authorities and refused to abide by German laws, often in what appears to be in a publicity-seeking manner.

German police carried out a series of raids on Tuesday, arresting the leaders of the extreme-right Kingdom of Germany

He has previously been jailed for repeatedly driving without a licence, following a decision to hand his back in a symbolic rejection of the law. At the end of one trial session, Fitzek was seen getting into his car in front of the court and driving off.

Fitzek is one of around 25,000 Reichsbürger in Germany. Numbers have been growing over the last few years.

Many are right-wing extremists who peddle racist and antisemitic conspiracy theories. They refuse to recognise the authority of security forces and many possess illegal arms, which has led to shoot-outs with police. Officials say that around 2,500 are potentially violent and that 1,350 are classed as right-wing extremists.

In 2022 dozens of people were arrested, many of them Reichsbürger, for plotting to overthrow the German government in Berlin. They were accused of planning a violent coup, which included kidnapping the health minister, to create “civil war conditions” to bring down German democracy.

In the past, Reichsbürger were often dismissed as eccentric cranks because of their outlandish ideas.

But as the far right has grown in strength politically in Germany over the last decade, officials now see them as a serious threat.

The federal prosecutor’s office in Karlsruhe said Fitzek was arrested along with three other suspected ringleaders of the group, which it classified as a criminal organisation.

As the “so-called supreme sovereign”, Fitzek had “control and decision-making power in all key areas”, the office said.

“The ‘Kingdom of Germany’ considers itself a sovereign state within the meaning of international law and strives to extend its claimed ‘national territory’ to the borders of the German Empire of 1871,” it added in a statement.

Sammy Gyamfi makes public appearance in official Goldbod capacity amid calls for his interdiction

The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, continues to perform his duties amid calls for his interdiction over viral videos of him handing out dollars to Patricia Asiedua Asiamah, popularly known as Nana Agradaa — a former fetish priestess turned evangelist.

Visuals shared on the official X platform of the board, on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, captured Sammy Gyamfi at an engagement with officials of the Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GNCCI).

The visuals showed Sammy Gyamfi, wearing a smile, in pictures with officials of the chamber and the board.

The officials of the GNCCI, led by its president, Stephan Miezan, reportedly paid a courtesy call on the CEO of the Gold Board to discuss opportunities for collaboration for economic transformation.

The other officials of the chamber were its Chief Executive Officer, Mark Boadu-Aboagye; its National Treasurer, Kabutey Ceaser; Dennis O Carter, a member of the chamber; and Peter Atsu Dotse, its Communication Officer.

Meanwhile, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called for the immediate interdiction of the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board, following his public gifting of US dollars to Evangelist Nana Agradaa.

The incident, captured in widely circulated videos on May 10, 2025, showed Gyamfi handing over cash in dollar denominations to the former fetish priestess while seated in his Range Rover.

During a news conference on May 13, 2025, NPP National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, urged President John Dramani Mahama to suspend Gyamfi pending investigations by state criminal authorities.

“We also call on the president to immediately interdict Mr Sammy Gyamfi as Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board — or at least, he should interdict him pending the conduct of the investigation by the criminal investigation authorities of the state,” Henry Boakye said.

He stressed the need for accountability, referencing the case of former Sanitation Minister Cecilia Dapaah, who resigned after reports of stolen money from her residence.

He noted that Cecilia Dapaah, a seasoned public servant, stepped aside under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, allowing the Office of the Special Prosecutor to conduct a thorough seven-month investigation.

French film star Gérard Depardieu found guilty in sexual assault trial

0

French film star Gérard Depardieu has been found guilty of sexually assaulting two women on a film set in Paris and given a suspended jail term of 18 months.

The 76-year-old actor was accused by the two women of groping them during work on a film in 2021. Depardieu had denied the allegations against him, and his lawyer said he would appeal.

A court in Paris found that one of the women, a set dresser named Amélie, had given consistent evidence while the actor’s accounts had changed over time.

She told reporters afterwards she was “very moved” and satisfied with the verdict, which for her was “a victory, a major step forward”.

Depardieu was also convicted of assaulting an assistant director called Sarah, which was not her real name.

The actor was not in court to hear the verdict but was instead working on a film set in the Azores.

Carine Durrieu-Diebolt, the lawyer acting for the two women, said she hoped the verdict marked the end of impunity for an artist in the film industry.

“It’s a victory for two women on a film set but it’s a victory for all the women behind this case and I’m thinking of all of Depardieu’s other victims,” she told reporters.

The lawyer also noted the case had come to an end hours before the Cannes film festival was due to start.

The judge said there was no reason to doubt the word of the two women victims, who had told the court how Depardieu had touched them on intimate parts of the body, using lewd language.

He placed Depardieu on a list of sex offenders and ordered him to pay compensation of €1,000 (£840) each to Amélie and Sarah for “secondary victimisation”, a recent innovation covering the additional suffering for the women from the trial itself.

Depardieu’s lawyer Jérémie Assous had accused the women of lying during their evidence.

The assaults took place in September 2021 when Depardieu was making a film called Les Volets Verts (The Green Shutters) about an ageing actor coming to terms with his declining powers.

This was Depardieu’s first trial on sexual assault charges. Several other women have made similar allegations in the media, and an alleged rape case could come to trial in the future.

After the trial, the actor was invited to join his close friend and fellow actor Fanny Ardant for a film-shoot in the Azores.

At the end of the trial in Paris in late March, prosecutor Laurent Guy said: “It’s perfectly possible to be an excellent actor and a great father – and still commit a crime.

“You are not here to pass judgment on French cinema. You are here to judge Gérard Depardieu, just as you would any other citizen.”

Claude Vincent, representing one of the two women plaintiffs, described Depardieu as a “misogynist” and a “case-study in sexism”.

Depardieu’s lawyer had demanded an acquittal and called the plaintiffs’ team “more militants than lawyers”.

“They cannot bear that there should even be a defence. They think any defence is a supplementary assault,” he told the court.

The first plaintiff, 54-year-old set decorator Amélie, told the court that after a minor argument with Depardieu, he caught her between his legs and held her by the hips.

The second woman, a 34-year-old assistant film director, said the actor had touched her buttocks and breasts through her clothes on three separate occasions. She chose to maintain her anonymity and was not in court to hear the verdict.

Depardieu denied the allegations, saying only that he might have touched the women accidentally or to keep his balance.

At the end of the hearings, Depardieu said: “My name has been dragged through the mud by lies and insults.

“A trial can be a very special experience for an actor. Seeing all this anger, the police, the press. It’s like being in a science fiction film, except it’s not science fiction. It’s life.”

AFP via Getty Images This court-sketch made on March 26, 2025 shows French actor Gerard Depardieu standing before the court in Paris during a hearing in his trial
A court sketch of Depardieu during a hearing in his trial in March

He thanked the prosecution and defence teams for giving him insights into how courts operate. “These lessons may be an inspiration for me one day if I get to play a lawyer,” he said.

Depardieu said he had not worked as an actor for three years since the sexual allegations against him began to circulate.

However, earlier this mont,h it was reported that he had begun working on a film directed by Fanny Ardant. Depardieu is playing a magician on a mysterious island, according to media reports.

Ardant appeared with Depardieu in Les Volets Verts and spoke in his defence at the trial.

“Genius – in whatever form it takes – carries within it an element of the extravagant, the untamed, the dangerous. (Depardieu) is the monster and the saint,” she said.

Another veteran French actress took Depardieu’s side on Monday. In a rare interview with French television, Brigitte Bardot, 90, deplored how “talented people who touch the buttocks of a girl are consigned to the deepest dungeon.”

“Feminism isn’t my thing,” Bardot said. “Personally, I like men.”

Trump pledges to lift Syria sanctions as he seals $142bn arms deal on Saudi visit

0

President Donald Trump has said the US has “no stronger partner” than Saudi Arabia during his first major foreign trip – a whirlwind visit of Gulf countries mainly focused on shoring up investment.

Speaking in Riyadh, the US president also pledged to lift all sanctions against Syria, saying it was now time for the country to move forward with “a chance at greatness”.

Day one of the tour saw the US and Saudi Arabia announce a $142bn (£107bn) arms deal, as well as other investments that the country’s crown prince said could eventually be worth $1tn.

Trump also made Saudi Arabia the first foreign stop during his first term, in 2017. The rest of his trip will include stops in Qatar and the UAE.

Trump’s arrival in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday was met with a grand reception, including a lavish lavender-coloured carpet rolled out to greet him. He had even chosen a purple tie to match it.

Riyadh swapped red carpets for lavender in 2021, saying that it was a symbol of the kingdom’s desert wildflowers and generosity.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman met Trump on the tarmac and provided an honour guard of Arabian horses to accompany his presidential limo.

In his remarks at an investment forum, Trump lauded the US-Saudi relationship as “more powerful than ever before”.

“From the moment we started, we’ve seen wealth that has poured – and is pouring – into America,” he said.

Trump is trying to woo foreign investors to the US to boost the American economy, a key focus of his administration in the nearly four months of his second term.

“I like him too much,” Trump said of Saudi Arabia’s crown prince and de facto ruler, Mohammed bin Salman. “That’s why we give so much.”

The pomp and ceremony was a step up from the muted welcome for former US President Joe Biden, who travelled to the oil-rich kingdom in 2022 to seek their help in lowering petrol prices, fist-bumping the crown prince.

That visit came two years after he declared Saudi Arabia a “pariah” state following the 2018 murder of dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Trump flew to the Gulf to strike financial deals and argued in his speech that it is through this kind of commerce and economic development that the Middle East would transcend violence and division.

Underscoring his commitment to deal-making, Trump was joined by a number of business leaders, including billionaire ally Elon Musk, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, BlackRock CEO Larry Fink and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang.

The high-profile executives are meeting a Saudi Arabia eager to diversify its oil-rich economy by increasing its artificial intelligence capabilities.

Mr Huang announced during the visit that Nvidia will sell more than 18,000 of its latest AI chips to Saudi company Humain.

Chips from Blackwell, whose CEO was also present, will be used in data centres across Saudi Arabia, according to remarks made at the forum.

During his address, Trump said it was his “dream” to have Saudi Arabia join the Abraham Accords, a deal brokered in his first administration that saw relations between Israel and some Gulf countries normalised for the first time.

But his good friend, Mohammed bin Salman, has made it clear that will not happen until there is a permanent end to the war in Gaza and a clear path to Palestinian statehood.

There is a limit to what this friendship can deliver.

Trump only briefly addressed the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

He told those in attendance that people in Gaza deserved a “better future”, which had been held back by Hamas choosing “to kidnap, torture and target” for “political ends” – a reference to the 7 October 2023 attack on Israel.

Trump also announced he was lifting sanctions on Syria to improve the country’s new government, a move he suggested was requested by Mohammed bin Salman.

“Oh, what I do for the crown prince,” the US leader said.

American sanctions on Syria had been in place for over a decade, meant to apply pressure and economic pain against the dictatorship of former President Bashar al-Assad, who was ousted in December.

Syria has since elected a new transitional president, creating an opening for renewed US diplomacy efforts.

The surprise announcement to lift the sanctions represents a sea change for Syria, described by its foreign minister Asaad Shibani as a “new start” in the country’s reconstruction path.

Robert Ford, who served as US ambassador to Syria under the Barack Obama administration, applauded the Trump administration’s move to lift sanctions.

“I visited Syria three months ago, and the country is simply devastated after the 13-year civil war. It needs to rebuild, it needs reconstruction, it needs foreign financing to do that,” he told the BBC.

“So removing the sanctions, that will enable international capital flows to go into Syria from Gulf states, from other Arab states, and different aid agencies, is absolutely vital.”

Trump was expected to meet Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa on Wednesday in Saudi Arabia.

From Riyadh, Trump will head to both Qatar and the UAE, which have already committed to investing $1.4tn in the US over the next decade.

Ancelotti ‘never had a problem’ with Real Madrid

0

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti says he has “never had a problem” with the club and does not want to “make a big deal” out of his impending departure for the Brazil national team.

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) confirmed the 65-year-old’s appointment as head coach on Monday, but there has not been an official announcement from Real.

The Italian’s tenure with Brazil will begin on 26 May, the day after Real Madrid face Real Sociedad in their final match of the 2024-25 season.

Bayer Leverkusen manager, and former Spain and Real Madrid midfielder, Xabi Alonso is set to succeed him at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Commenting on Monday’s announcement, Ancelotti said: “If I didn’t have the press conference today, it would be fantastic. There are things I can’t explain right now because I’m at Madrid and I want to respect the shirt.

“From 26 May onwards, I’ll be Brazil’s coach. It’s a very important challenge, but I want to finish the final stretch of this fantastic adventure here well.

“I never had problems with Real and never will have problems with Real. It’s a club that lives dearly in my heart, but everything in life has a date to end.

“I couldn’t be Madrid’s coach for the rest of my life. It comes to an end for many reasons. The club may need a new impetus. I’m not making a big deal out of it.

“A thousand thanks to this club. And we’ll carry on. I’ll always be a Madrid fan. It’s the end of an era. Spectacular. I never thought I’d coach Madrid for six years, and now it’s happened.”

On Madrid not issuing a statement, he added: “Madrid will release a statement whenever it wants. There is no problem whatsoever and they’ll do it when they deem it appropriate.”

During two spells with Real Madrid, Ancelotti has won 15 trophies, including three Champions League titles.

Last season, he led them to a Champions League and La Liga double, but is set to finish this campaign without silverware.

Real Madrid exited the Champions League in the quarter-finals, lost the final of the Copa del Rey to Barcelona, and sit seven points behind Hansi Flick’s side in the league with three matches remaining.

Reflecting on his time at Madrid, he said: “I always kept in mind that one day it ends. I’ve had a great time, and I think everyone has, but there comes a time when it ends. Football is like life; something begins and ends.

“I’ve had a great time. We’ve won a lot and it will be a memory for life.

“The day I arrived [for the second time], if they told me I’d win 11 titles in four years, I’d sign it with my own blood. It’s been an unforgettable time.”

New gas processing plant will be a game-changer for Ghana – Finance Minister

0

The Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has described the planned Second Gas Processing Plant (GPP II) as a game-changing project that will transform the country’s energy landscape, create jobs, and save the economy hundreds of millions of dollars.

Speaking at the inauguration of the GPP II Implementation Committee at the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, Dr. Forson said Ghana’s over-reliance on expensive liquid fuels to power its plants has become unsustainable, costing the nation more than $1 billion annually.

“Without the Atuabo Gas Plant, Ghana would have been in deep trouble. Today, we face a similar opportunity to secure our future,” he stated.

According to him, the new Gas Processing Plant will save the country close to $500 million every two years, enough to pay for the project within a short period while creating over 1,000 direct and indirect jobs.

The Finance Minister joined the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, to inaugurate the technical committee tasked with overseeing the project’s implementation.

Dr. Forson charged the committee, chaired by the Deputy Minister for Energy, to deliver a comprehensive implementation plan within four weeks, stressing that the country could no longer afford delays in critical infrastructure delivery.

“This is too important for our country’s welfare and economic stability. Enough of the bureaucracy, let’s get it done,” he said.

For his part, Energy Minister John Jinapor emphasised the urgent need for the project, lamenting that little progress had been made in developing additional gas processing infrastructure since the commissioning of the Atuabo Gas Plant.

He noted that Ghana’s growing gas deficit has left the country dependent on costly imported liquid fuels, increasing pressure on public finances and threatening energy security.

Once completed, the GPP II is expected to improve the supply of natural gas for power generation and industrial use, reducing the country’s reliance on liquid fuels and easing foreign exchange pressures. It is also projected to position Ghana as a regional energy hub over the medium to long term.

At the ceremony, two key committees were inaugurated — a Technical Implementation Committee and a Communications and Social License Committee, the latter chaired by Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Hajia Shamima Muslim.

Industry analysts have welcomed the move, noting that the successful delivery of the GPP II could help stabilise power generation costs, improve reliability, and significantly boost investor confidence in Ghana’s energy sector.

Young broadcaster, nutritionist Emefa Deka launches menstrual hygiene campaign in Pokuase

0

Young broadcaster, nutritionist Emefa Deka Young broadcaster, nutritionist Emefa Deka

In a bold and passionate move to empower young girls through education and advocacy, Emefa Deka, a dynamic young broadcaster and GIMPA-certified nutritionist, has launched a menstrual hygiene awareness campaign under her emerging initiative, Plug Her.

The campaign, which aims to promote positive menstrual hygiene practices, is set to make a significant impact in Pokuase and surrounding communities ahead of Menstrual Hygiene Day on May 28.

Speaking on her motivation for launching the campaign, Emefa said, “Menstrual hygiene is important to me because most young girls in Pokuase and its environs hardly have proper education about it.

This affects a lot, from school dropouts due to teasing, to teenage pregnancies resulting from a lack of understanding of the menstrual cycle, and even societal stigma caused by inadequate hygiene care.”

Through this initiative, Plug Her will drive a community-centered engagement where health experts, youth advocates, and volunteers will interact directly with young girls to raise awareness and provide both educational and material support.

The campaign will feature open discussions, interactive sessions, and the distribution of menstrual pads to promote confidence, hygiene, and dignity among adolescent girls.

“Menstrual Hygiene Day is May 28, and I am asking for support—whether in cash or kind, to help us share as many menstrual pads as possible with young girls in my community,” Emefa stated.

She emphasized that the goal is not just to hand out a single pad but to offer at least five pads per girl to a target group of 200 young ladies, making it a meaningful and sustainable contribution.

“This will be a great start if we are able to do that,” she added. “Month after month, if young girls know their periods are safe and manageable, they’ll gain the confidence to pursue education, engage in empowering programs, and live fuller lives without fear or shame.”

On May 28, Plug Her will host a talkshop at the Pokuae D/A Schools with over 600 young girls at 10 am with resource people.

Emefa Deka calls on all women, organizations, and well-meaning individuals to join her in this cause: “Let’s build a future where every girl can menstruate with dignity, confidence, and pride. The change starts with us.”

Let Sammy Gyamfi’s Mistake Be A Caution To All Appointees – Mohammed Mashood

0

Alhaji Mohammed Mashood

The Director of Finance and Administration of Backbone of Good Governance, a Civil Society Organization operating in Ghana, has advised all appointees of this government, especially the youthful ones, to learn from past appointees and be mindful of the government’s Code of Conduct, at all times.

According the Director of Finance and Administration of Backbone of Good Governance, Alhaji Mohammed Mashood, the recent show of opulence by the Chief Executive Officer of the Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, in a video that has gone viral, would never be repeated if all other appointees learn from this experience and past appointees.

“It will not be wrong to learn from past appointees or even publications about some bad incidents that infuriated a large section of the public. In as much as some of their actions may be right in their private settings, same actions may cause public uproar if hit happens in public, hence the need to be careful how they (appointees) handle themselves and offices in public.

I have seen the video of Sammy Gyamfi giving some amount of Dollars to a certain Nana Agradaa, in the full glare of the public; I wouldn’t say what happened is lawful or unlawful. In as much as we would like to see the President, John Dramani Mahama ensure the compliance with the recently launched Code of Conduct, We would also plead with the President to forgive the young Chief Executive Officer of the Gold Board and let it be a warning to all others.”

Alhaji Mashood believes that, if many appointees will accept their mistakes quickly as Sammy Gyamfi did and promise never to repeat their mistakes, the confidence that Ghanaians have in Ghana’s democracy and politicians will increase far above the current levels.

“We should not be fast to judge and condemn Sammy Gyamfi because of this single act. He has so much to offer to the governance of Ghana. Many young people aspiring to enter into politics have learned many positive lessons from Sammy Gyamfi, and so this viral video alone shouldn’t erase all his good deeds.

Sammy Gyamfi has handled himself well and honourably as a Communications Director of the National Democratic Congress and his name has become household name due to his good deeds.”

The Civil Society Organization, Backbone of Good Governance has promise to watch the conduct of government appointees strictly from now and when they fall foul of their mandates to Ghanaians, they will call the attention of the government and the public for the needed punitive action to be taken.

CMCE, ActionAid Ghana sensitises community-based violence teams on conflict

0

The Coalition for Maternal Health and Citizen Empowerment (CMCE) and ActionAid Ghana have trained Community-Based Anti-Violence Teams (COMBAT) in the Asutifi North and South districts on the early warning signs of conflict.

Conflict, a disagreement or clash between individuals or groups involving opposing interests, goals, or viewpoints, can manifest in overt arguments or passive-aggressive behaviour stemming from differing perspectives, unmet needs, communication breakdowns, or power imbalances.

It can be expressed verbally in arguments, physically through altercations, or through more subtle behaviors like passive-aggressiveness or emotional withdrawal.

During a COMBAT review and planning meeting at Kenyasi in the Ahafo Region, the Programs Officer for ActionAid Ghana in the Bono, Ahafo, and Bono East regions, Yaw Osei Boateng, said issues of conflict are increasing and that there is a need to sensitize the public.

He indicated that conflict can occur in personal relationships, workplaces, associations, families, among ethnic groups, and in other areas of society, adding that we must join hands to address them amicably and promptly whenever they occur.

Mr. Boateng stated that early warning signs of conflict can manifest in various ways, including behavioral changes, emotional shifts, and physical reactions, providing valuable insights into the potential for conflict escalation and allowing for early intervention and de-escalation.

“While often perceived negatively, conflict can also be a catalyst for growth and change if handled constructively, where resolution strategies can include negotiation, compromise, or even seeking mediation,” the officer added.

He reiterated that conflict prevention involves addressing the root causes of conflict, such as inequality, poverty, and lack of political participation, and building resilience in societies to withstand potential triggers of violence.

Key aspects of conflict prevention include addressing root causes, recognizing early warning signs, and building peace through conflict resolution.

This involves promoting the peaceful settlement of disputes through dialogue, mediation, and other conflict resolution mechanisms.

The Executive Director of CMCE, Yaw Osei Boateng, noted that the center collaborates with state-owned institutions, namely CHRAJ, DoVVSU, and the Department of Social Welfare, which update them on issues of violence happening in the communities.

He said behavioural warning signs of violence include repeated loss of temper, frequent physical fighting, vandalism or property damage, increased use of drugs and alcohol, and an increased demonstration of risk-taking behavior.

Other signs, the Executive Director noted, include announcing plans or threats to commit acts of violence or harm others, enjoyment in hurting animals, and carrying, accessing, or having a fascination with weapons, especially guns.

According to Mr. Mahama, if a student or any other person in the neighborhood shares information or behaves in a way that leads you to believe he or she could harm himself or herself or others, it must be reported to the appropriate authorities, including security officers.

A participant, Matilda Asare, on behalf of the beneficiaries, thanked CMCE and ActionAid Ghana for enlightening them on issues of conflict, its causes, possible solutions, and other preventive measures, saying that “the knowledge and skills acquired will be used.”

The Centre for Maternal Health and Community Empowerment (CMCE), established in 1995 and in partnership with ActionAid Ghana, is a national non-governmental organization (NGO) operating in four districts of the then Brong Ahafo Region of Ghana.

It operates in sectors of the economy, namely agriculture, anti-corruption, civil society, NGOs, education, food security, fundraising, gender, health, human rights, and rural development.

Togbega Dorglo Anumah VI defends the integrity of chieftaincy structure

In a landmark emergency meeting held on Sunday, May 11, 2025, at the Assembly Hall of the Akatsi South Municipal Assembly, Togbega Dorglo Anumah VI, Paramount Chief and President of the Avenor Traditional Council, delivered a resounding speech reaffirming the council’s unwavering commitment to preserving its traditional governance.

The meeting, attended by esteemed Chiefs, Queens, Elders, and representatives from across Avenor, was convened in response to a contentious issue that has persisted for over a decade—attempts to elevate Togbui Samlafo IV to the status of a Paramount Chief, a move fiercely opposed by the leadership of the Avenor Traditional Council.

Togbega Dorglo Anumah VI wasted no time in addressing the central issue, revealing that on May 2, 2025, he received a letter from a sub-committee of the National House of Chiefs, tasked with examining a petition regarding the alleged elevation of Togbui Samlafo IV.

This development, according to the Paramount Chief, represents yet another attempt to destabilize Avenor’s established leadership hierarchy.

The Paramount Chief emphasized that Togbui Samlafo IV’s status as a sub-chief under the Amegavieso Stool does not entitle him to a Paramountcy.

He underscored the longstanding traditions governing the Avenor chieftaincy structure, firmly dismissing the idea of “clan Paramount Chiefs” as illegitimate and disruptive to the unity of the traditional area.

In a bold stance against external interference, Togbega Dorglo Anumah VI called out political figures, including the former Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Edward Doe Adjaho, for persistently supporting Togbui Samlafo IV’s elevation—a move deemed unlawful and unprecedented.

The Chief reiterated that Togbui Sri III of Anlo has no authority over Avenor’s chieftaincy affairs, cautioning against the importation of Anlo’s system of proliferating Paramountcies, which has reportedly caused more confusion than order.

Declaring a firm and lawful resistance, Togbega Dorglo Anumah VI called upon the President of the Republic, the Chief of Staff, and the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to intervene and halt further interference in Avenor’s chieftaincy affairs.

As the council prepares its formal response to the National House of Chiefs, a petition will also be submitted to the Office of the President.

Togbega Dorglo Anumah VI urged all stakeholders to uphold the integrity of Avenor’s traditional structures, stressing that the people of Avenor will defend their heritage with unwavering determination.

“We will not permit the elevation of Togbui Samlafo IV to the status of Paramount Chief. We will resist this agenda with every lawful means at our disposal. We will defend the integrity of our traditional territory,” he declared.

Amidst the tension, the Paramount Chief reassured the people of Avenor that their unity and traditions remain sacred. With a call for divine protection and ancestral guidance, he closed his speech with a resounding message:

“May the gods of our ancestors guide and protect us in our quest for justice and peace. God bless the Avenor Traditional Area. God bless our unity and heritage.”

The historic meeting solidified the council’s position, sending a clear message that the Avenor Traditional Council will not back down in defending its leadership structure and safeguarding the customs that have shaped its identity for generations.

Clinching scenarios: How Barcelona can win La Liga title

0

FC Barcelona are one step away from the league title after a thrilling win against Real Madrid over the weekend.

The Catalans have a 7 point lead ahead of the capital club, with only three games left. This puts them on the cusp of winning the trophy, although it is technically possible for Real Madrid to still snatch the trophy.

It would be highly unlikely as Madrid would have to win every remaining game and Barça would have to drop the majority of the remaining points, but it’s still technically possible.

As it stands, Barcelona have 82 points and Madrid have 75. Crucially, Barcelona win any tiebreaking scenario as it’s based on direct matches between the two, and El Clásico produced two wins for Barça this season.

So, if Madrid have 2 wins and 1 draw, they would get to 82 points. Even if Barcelona lose every match, they would still win La Liga due to the tiebreaker.

That means the only chance Madrid have to win La Liga would be to win every game and get to 84 points, but even that would not assure it, of course. Barcelona would only need a minimum of 2 points in 3 matches to also reach 84 points and clinch the title.

Thus, the earliest that Barcelona can confirm the league title is tomorrow, but it would not be by their own hand. Rather, if Real Madrid either draw or lose against RCD Mallorca, Barcelona would be the champions regardless of any other results.

Even if Madrid win that game, Barcelona can still clinch the title by winning against local rivals RCD Espanyol on Thursday. In fact, Barcelona can win the title by winning any one of the remaining three games, regardless of all other games.

To reiterate – any win at any time is enough for Barcelona, and any draw or loss by Madrid also confirms the trophy for Barça.

There exists one final possibility. Let’s assume Real Madrid win all remaining games. Barcelona could still win the league title without winning even a single game, by drawing at least two matches.

Barcelona may want to avoid the unnecessary stress of any such scenario, however, and simply prepare to win the next game.

Chowdeck launches in Ghana with customer reward and rider training scheme

0

Nigerian on-demand delivery startup Chowdeck has officially launched in Ghana, marking its first expansion beyond Nigeria. The company is introducing a customer reward scheme alongside an extensive rider training programme.

This training initiative will equip its riders with the skills needed for better service delivery. Riders will be trained on effective app usage, customer service, delivery quality, and professionalism.

In addition, riders will also participate in “Rider Games” where they can get incentives and bonuses based on their performance ratings and even access up to GHS1,000 in loans depending on their activity.

Chowdeck is also rolling out a referral scheme for customers which will allow new users to receive ₵10 on their first order and another ₵10 on their second order if they share an invite with friends. Additionally, after placing their first order of the month, customers can unlock their Chowscore, a tiered reward system that offers free delivery and exclusive discounts to customers depending on their level.

The startup will kick off operations in key areas including Osu, Cantonments, Labone, Airport, Dzorwulu, East Legon, Madina, Adenta, Oyarifa and Abokobi.

Launched in 2021, Chowdeck has quickly established itself in Nigeria’s competitive food delivery sector, gaining over 1.5 million users and more than 20,000 riders across 11 cities.

Its entry into the Ghanaian market is key, with recent data indicating that 87% of consumers in Ghana use mobile phones to access food delivery platforms and that digital payment transactions in the country are projected to reach $2.35 billion by 2025, reflecting a shift towards cashless commerce.

“Ghana represents the first steps in our broader pan-African growth strategy. We are starting in Accra and are excited to be kicking off our operations. This expansion is more than just growth – it’s about building the infrastructure for commerce and convenience across the continent,” Femi Aluko, CEO of Chowdeck, said.

To lead its operations in Ghana, Chowdeck appointed Henry Whyte as Country Manager in April 2025.  Whyte was previously a Senior Operations Manager at Bolt Ghana and is familiar with the local delivery landscape.

Ahead of its Ghana launch, Chowdeck also undertook significant operational restructuring in Nigeria. The company reduced its contract workforce by 68% following enhancements in its rider and restaurant management systems. This streamlining allowed the company to achieve more efficient delivery times and reduce dependency on manual processes.

However, Ghana’s food delivery space is not without competition. Bolt Food, which exited Nigeria in December 2023, remains active, and has been operating for over four years. This makes Chowdeck’s entry a direct challenge to existing players and a test of its adaptability in new markets.

‘There is no power vacuum’

0

Acting Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe, has rejected claims that Ghana is experiencing a constitutional power vacuum, following concerns raised by the Minority Caucus in Parliament about the absence of the President, Vice President, and Speaker of Parliament from the country.

He clarified that the architecture of Ghana’s government is functioning as intended, with institutional continuity fully intact.

“I thought there were three – the Judiciary, the Executive, and the Legislature. Is the Acting CJ in Ghana? There is an Acting CJ. It is not personal. It is the office.

“So as we speak, there is an Acting CJ of the Republic, and that is the reason we have three arms of government…What I can say is that there is no power vacuum. It does appear that the President is in the country,” Tamakloe told Umaru Sanda Amadu on Channel One TV’s Face to Face on Tuesday, May 13.

The Minority in a statement on Monday, May 12, 2025, accused the government of flouting the Constitution.

According to the Minority, at the time of their statement, President John Dramani Mahama was in Togo attending the African Union Debt Conference, Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang was receiving medical treatment in the UK, and Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin was also abroad.

Citing Article 60 of the Constitution, the Minority argued that in such instances, an Acting President must be sworn in—either the Speaker or, in their absence, the Chief Justice. However, Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo remains under suspension, further compounding the constitutional dilemma.

Despite the Minority’s assertion that this situation constitutes a “deliberate and calculated” violation of the Constitution, Tamakloe maintained that there is no leadership crisis.

By insisting that the acting Chief Justice is present and that the presidency remains intact, Tamakloe sought to allay fears of a constitutional breakdown.

The Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) is intensifying efforts to establish a minimum wage for musicians, a move aimed at ensuring fair remuneration and improving livelihoods within the industry.

MUSIGA is currently in the process of engaging Kingsley Ofei-Nkansah, popularly known as Sax, as a consultant to support this critical initiative.

In addition, MUSIGA has held productive meetings with the owners of +233, Ghana’s leading venue for live performances, to discuss the implementation of the minimum wage.

These engagements mark important steps in MUSIGA’s strategy to collaborate with key industry stakeholders to secure sustainable and fair compensation for musicians.

The union’s efforts come amid ongoing conversations sparked by statements from prominent religious leaders. The Founder of the Lighthouse Chapel, Rev. Dag Heward-Mills, and Rev. Elishah Amoako have both commented on the issue of compensating musicians for their skills and contributions.

It’s against this backdrop that establishing a minimum wage based on fair remuneration is the way forward for the Ghanaian music industry.

S.K. Agyemang, General Secretary of MUSIGA, stated: “Our discussions with Kingsley Ofei-Nkansah and the owners of +233 demonstrate our commitment to securing fair pay for musicians.

The statements from respected leaders like Rev. Dag Heward-Mills and Rev. Elishah Amoako reinforce the necessity of this initiative. MUSIGA is dedicated to ensuring that musicians receive the recognition and compensation they deserve through a structured minimum wage system.”

MUSIGA continues to build on its collaborations with international experts and local stakeholders to develop a robust framework that guarantees fair wages and fosters a sustainable music industry in Ghana.

NPP lacks moral high ground to demand Gyamfi’s suspension

0

The Acting Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe, has criticised the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) for demanding the suspension of Sammy Gyamfi, the Acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board, following a controversial dollar gift incident.

The controversy arose after a viral video showed Gyamfi handing over bundles of U.S. dollar notes to Patricia Asiedua, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, a former fetish priestess-turned-evangelist.

The gesture has sparked widespread public criticism, with civil society groups and political opponents calling it inappropriate and indicative of poor judgment.

In response to the backlash, Gyamfi issued a public apology, describing the act as a lapse in judgment and expressing sincere remorse.

Speaking on Face to Face with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Channel One TV on Tuesday, May 13, Mr. Tamakloe firmly rejected calls for Gyamfi’s suspension and accused the NPP of lacking moral consistency.

“I think the NPP is not a standard; they have lowered the bar, and so, the respect that I have for the people of this country, I do not want to move into any realms of equalisation, that Kojo did that in the past,” Tamakloe said.

He reaffirmed support for Gyamfi’s apology, extending a further expression of regret on behalf of the party.

“My brother has apologised and we stand by the apology. And with all due respect to the people of Ghana, on behalf of our brother, once again, I say we sincerely apologise,” he stated.

Mr. Tamakloe also noted that the incident should serve as a broader lesson for politicians, reinforcing the need for mindfulness in public conduct.

Myx Quest calls for more creative recognition at TGMA 2026

British Ghanaian record producer, composer and entrepreneur Myx Ques British Ghanaian record producer, composer and entrepreneur Myx Ques

British Ghanaian record producer, composer and entrepreneur Myx Quest has shared thoughtful reflections on the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA), sparking a timely conversation about the balance between popularity and artistic creativity in award shows.

In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Quest praised the event’s overall organization, citing “great sound” and “some good performances” as highlights. However, he also pointed out areas for improvement, particularly the event’s length and its criteria for recognition.

“It was a nice event, organised, great sound, some good performances but it went on a bit too long. Also, I feel there should be more categories that focus on and appreciate creativity/craft rather than mainly numbers and hype,” he posted.

The comment quickly gained traction, resonating with many in the Ghanaian and broader African music industry who have long expressed similar concerns that major music award shows often prioritize commercial success over innovation, lyrical depth, and production quality.

Myx Quest; a longtime voting member of the Recording Academy (GRAMMYs), also founder and director of Ghana-based Vibes & Fusion Orchestra, known for his genre-blending music production and emphasis on artistry, has been a consistent advocate for creative excellence in music. His call for more categories that spotlight craftsmanship aligns with a growing demand across the continent for a more balanced approach to recognition in the music industry.

With the 2025 TGMA now in the rear-view mirror, industry watchers are already looking ahead to TGMA 2026, hoping the organizers take Quest’s insights into account. His feedback underscores the importance of evolving the awards to not just reflect who dominated the charts, but also who pushed the boundaries of sound, storytelling, and culture.

As the African music scene continues to grow in global influence, voices like Myx Quest’s are critical in shaping a future that values both impact and integrity.

Myx Quest, whose real name is Myx Boadi-Alawiye Michael Kofi Quest, recently announced as Ghana Music Awards UK – “UK Producer of the Year”, has a rich history in the music industry, having worked with a wide range of artists across various genres.

He’s worked with artists such as Beyoncé, Solange, Sarkodie, Bien, M.anifest, Efya, Kelvyn Boy, Fameye, AratheJay etc.

In addition to his music career, Quest is also known for his entrepreneurial ventures, including his role as the owner of Qirv, a company that encompasses music production, property development, and a health and wellness online business.

Sammy Gyamfi’s apology should end dollar gift row – Edudzi

0

The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe, has called for an end to the controversy surrounding Sammy Gyamfi’s widely criticised dollar gift to former fetish priestess-turned-evangelist, Patricia Asiedua Asiamah, popularly known as Nana Agradaa, following Gyamfi’s public apology.

Tamakloe noted that Sammy Gyamfi, the acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board, had taken full responsibility for his actions and urged Ghanaians to accept his apology and move on.

Gyamfi has faced intense public backlash after a viral video showed him handing dollar notes to Nana Agradaa at a public event. The incident sparked concerns about the display of opulence, particularly given the country’s ongoing economic challenges.

In response to the uproar, Gyamfi issued a public apology, expressing regret and acknowledging the act as a lapse in judgment.

Mr. Tamakloe, speaking during an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Face to Face on Channel One TV on Tuesday, May 13, said the apology was the appropriate step and should bring the matter to a close.

“Graciously, my friend and brother, Sammy Gyamfi, less than 24 hours, when this incident became public, he thought it wise to apologise to the good people of this country and H.E. President John Dramani Mahama as well. I think that is the right thing to do,” Tamakloe said.

“He has apologised in his write-up, I think it should bring finality to the matter. I think that should suffice.”

While stressing that the apology does not excuse the behaviour, Tamakloe said it reflects a recognition of public concern and shows contrition.

“Having apologised for the issue provides no justification whatsoever. I think that spirit, that remorseful spirit, should assuage whatever anger or the sensibilities of our people,” he added.

Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor (L) and Rev John Ntim Fordjour (R) Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor (L) and Rev John Ntim Fordjour (R)

The Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor, has filed a defamation lawsuit against his colleague, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, MP for Assin South, over a social media post he claims has severely damaged his reputation.

The legal action follows a post made by Rev. Ntim Fordjour on May 8, 2025, via the platform X (formerly Twitter), in which he alleged that Mr. Dafeamekpor—who also serves as the Majority Chief Whip in Parliament—acted as Vice Chairman of the Committee on Subsidiary Legislation during a period when embattled former National Signals Bureau boss, Kwabena Adu-Boahene, allegedly paid GH¢360,000 to the committee to help facilitate the passage of a Legislative Instrument (L.I.).

Kwabena Adu-Boahene, in his defence against claims that he fraudulently misappropriated GH¢49.1 million, explained that allowances of GH¢960,000 and GH¢309,000 were paid to MPs on the Defence and Interior Committee and the Subsidiary Legislation Committee, respectively, during the passage of the NSB Act and its accompanying Legislative Instrument.

In response to accusations that he embezzled GH¢49.1 million, Kwabena Adu-Boahene clarified that during the enactment of the NSB Act and its corresponding Legislative Instrument, MPs on the Defense and Interior Committee and the Subsidiary Legislation Committee received allowances of GH¢960,000 and GH¢309,000, respectively.

Rev. Fordjour demanded in the same post that Mr. Dafeamekpor and others be the subject of a thorough investigation, saying that the NDC and all others involved in the alleged embezzlement would be held responsible once the investigation got underway.

Mr. Dafeamekpor responded by filing a statement of claim in which he unequivocally denied the accusations and called the post “malicious, defamatory, and false.”

“The Plaintiff has further suffered economic harm, loss of business, disruption to his professional activities, and extreme emotional distress as a result of the widespread dissemination and continuous accessibility of the defamatory statements,” the suit reads.

“The Plaintiff says that the defamatory statements made by the Defendant and published on ‘X’ formerly ‘Twitter’ are untrue and same was made with calculated malice, aforethought in order to paint the plaintiff as a person who is corrupt and accepts bribes to pass Legislations of Parliament.”

In addition to requesting a public apology and retraction from Rev. Fordjour, Mr. Dafeamekpor is also requesting an interlocutory injunction to prevent the MP and his allies from making or disclosing any more statements until the lawsuit is resolved.

“An order of perpetual injunction restraining the Defendant from making or in any other way, causing to be published any further defamatory statements about the Plaintiff. An order directed at the Defendant to retract the said defamatory statement made about the Plaintiff and posted online,” the suit demands.

My suit against Ken Agyapong was not about the money, but a fight for truth and justice – Anas

0

Investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas and former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong Investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas and former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong

Investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas, has emphasised that his recent defamation lawsuit against former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, was not about financial compensation.

Instead, he asserts that his fight was centered on truth and justice.

A Superior Court in Essex County, New Jersey, reduced a defamation award against the former Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Agyapong, from $18 million to $500, following a legal request by his lawyers.

The court’s decision came after the trial judge acknowledged that while Kennedy Agyapong had indeed defamed investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, the original amount awarded by the jury was deemed excessive.

In a statement released on Sunday, May 11, 2025, Anas Aremeyaw Anas, through his investigative outfit Tiger Eye PI, welcomed the revised judgment, emphasising that the ruling reaffirmed the core issue of the case that Kennedy Agyapong had maliciously defamed him.

“Following the award, Kennedy Agyapong filed a motion for remittitur… Thus, inherent in his motion, Kennedy Agyapong admitted to having maliciously defamed me,” it stated.

Reacting to the Court’s decision to reduce the 18 million to $500, Anas said he was pleased that not a single allegation was proven against him in court when Kennedy Agyapong was given full opportunity to substantiate.

“I will continue in my relentless fight against corruption – and in doing that, continue to name, shame, and jail.

“But, it is important to state, as I previously did, that, this fight has not been about the money, but rather, a fight for truth and justice,” the May 11, 2025 press statement said.

Background

The case originated in 2019 after Anas sued Ken Agyapong in the US over defamatory remarks the MP made following the release of the Number 12 documentary.

The investigative piece produced by Tiger Eye Pl, exposed rooted corruption within Ghana’s football sector, leading to the resignation of then Ghana Football Association President, Kwesi Nyantakyi.

Kennedy Agyapong launched a sustained public campaign to discredit Anas, accusing him of fraud and unethical journalism. The accusations formed the basis of the defamation lawsuit.

In April 2025, a US jury ruled in favour of Anas and awarded $18 million in damages.

However, Kennedy Agyapong’s legal team later filed a motion for remittitur, contending that the amount was excessive.

The trial judge agreed, leading to the reduction.

Commercial drivers to strike May 19 over roadside trading, traffic violations

0

Commercial transport operators across the country have announced plans to embark on a nationwide strike on Monday, May 19, 2025. The action is in protest against what they describe as the government’s failure to enforce provisions of the Road Traffic Regulations Act, 2012, which prohibits trading on roads, pavements, and at designated bus stops.

At the centre of their concerns is Sub-regulation 117 of the Act, which explicitly states “A person shall not sell, display, offer for sale or deliver under a sale, goods on or alongside a road; on a pedestrian walkway; within thirty metres of a railway level crossing; under a road traffic sign denoting a blind corner or rise on; within an intersection; or on or alongside a road including a toll booth and a plaza.”

Despite the clarity of the law, the drivers lamented that authorities have failed to enforce it, allowing widespread disregard of the regulation.

According to the transport operators, this negligence has led to unsafe road conditions and worsened traffic congestion in many parts of the country.

At a press conference on Tuesday, May 13, Deputy Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Samuel Amoah, said the ongoing violation of the law is putting drivers and passengers at risk.

The protest is being spearheaded by the GPRTU, the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana, and the True Drivers Union.

The union also demanded immediate action from both the Ghana Police Service and the government to address the issue.

“We urge the Ghana Police and the government to enforce the law and take decisive action against traders who flout these regulations. It is unfair that we transport operators are expected to adhere to strict regulations while traders are allowed to operate with impunity on our roads,” said Samuel Amoah.

They further warned that their strike will go ahead if no concrete steps are taken.

“If meaningful action is not taken, we will be forced to take drastic measures. On May 19, 2025, we will park our vehicles in protest, highlighting the need for designated parking spaces and strict enforcement of traffic regulations,” he said.

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs Trial Live Updates: Cassie Testifies About Freak-Offs

0

Teny Geragos, one of Sean Combs’s lawyers, sought to paint Mr. Combs as a “flawed individual” who had an unconventional sex life in her opening statement on Monday. Here is her full statement to the court.

Sean Combs is a complicated man, but this is not a complicated case. This case is about love, jealousy, infidelity, and money.

This case is about voluntary, adult choices made by capable adults and consensual relationships. This case is about those real-life relationships, and the government is trying to turn those relationships into a racketeering case, a prostitution case, and a sex trafficking case. It will not work.

Let’s start with the basics, the most important things in this courtroom are you and him. At a time when everything in government can feel so uncertain, one thing has remained the same in our justice system, and that is standing between all of us and a criminal conviction, is a jury of our peers. That is you. You will hear the evidence. You will get to the truth. You will see the witnesses and evaluate them one by one.

And finally, finally, the story about this case can finally come out. Why do I say that? I say that because this case is not about what you’ve heard on the news, read in the news, or have seen on social media for the past year and a half. This case is not about what civil attorneys looking for a payday are trying to make my client out to be. There has been a tremendous amount of noise around this case for the past year and it is time to cancel that noise and hear and see the evidence that will be presented in this courtroom. And it will be crystal clear.

The story of Sean Combs is a fascinating one, but it is a human one. We are going to tell you his story over the next two months in this courtroom. And you will learn that he is a man who grew up here in New York City, in Harlem, who came from little, but built ground breaking, lawful businesses. You will hear that he is a wealthy individual, but know that the evidence will show that nobody gave him this money. He worked for it and no one gave him a dime. It will show that he made every single dollar. Recreated a culture and produced music that I believe you will hear will change the generation. And I believe that the evidence is going to show that this ingenuity is what drew people to Mr. Combs.

Witnesses will share with you that Mr. Combs is a fascinating person, and that people are drawn to him. Yes, he is famous. Yes, he is wealthy. And that’s certainly part of it. But he was charismatic and magnetic and a larger than life figure. If you had any interest in climbing the social ladder at the time and being involved in the music industry, the apparel industry, spirits industry, attending his legendary parties, you wanted to be around Sean Combs.

You also wanted to be around him because of the benefits that came along with being with him. As you listen to the evidence in this case, try to remember why that matters. Try to remember why people stayed around him and why it matters. I expect it will matter to you as the jury because he gave people opportunities and he gave people chances to work at his companies. They believed he had a vision that few others had, and, for the most part, I believe the evidence will show you that they loved him. I don’t think that the witnesses will tell you they always liked what he did or how he behaved, but the real time text messages that you will review in this case show that the people really loved him. And they believed that by being with Sean Combs, they were part of something special.

So, by now, you’ve heard the government say a lot of things about my client. It’s time for me to introduce you to him. His name is Sean Combs. You may have heard him by Puff Daddy, P. Diddy, Puffy, Diddy, but standing in this courtroom, at 55 years old, in the same place he was born and raised, he’s going by the same name he was born with, Sean Combs. My name is Teny Geragos and I am one of the attorneys honored to represent him.

The government started their opening statement by telling you this is about a 20-year racketeering influence corrupt organization act enterprise that he committed with his apparent trusted inner circle. The only people in this courtroom who will tell you that they participated in, knew about, or came to an agreement to participate in a racketeering enterprise are the prosecutors. Not one witness will get into this courtroom and will take that witness stand and tell you that they were part of any racketeering influenced corrupt organization act enterprise. And the reason is simple: There was not one.

You heard what the government tried to say the enterprise is, that he used his lawful businesses to feed his every desire, including sexual ones. This case is about Sean Combs’ private, personal sex life, which has nothing to do with his lawful businesses. The government has no place here in this man’s private bedrooms. The government can say over and over again that this is not about his private sex life, but the evidence will show you that it is.

The people who will come into this courtroom and testify are the people who would know about a racketeering enterprise, and those people will all say they knew nothing about any enterprise. That is because these hard working individuals were either doing their jobs as personal assistants, or as top executives running his successful businesses. These are individuals educated at places from Harvard to Howard University.

The prosecution will bring in those same employees and others into this courtroom and have them testify that Sean Combs has a temper. And when he drank, or when he did the wrong drugs, he would get violent. My client is not proud of that. But it is one of the many things we are going to own and fully admit right up front at this trial.

Sean Combs has a bad temper. He sometimes gets so angry or so jealous that he is out of control. You will see evidence and you will hear some testimony that does not portray my client in a good light. You will hear some text messages, some voice notes, and some witness testimony that may make you think I don’t think this guy is a great guy. I don’t like how he just lied to his girlfriends. I don’t like the things he just said in that text message.

I want to tell you now there may be one point, there may be multiple points at this trial where you think I think he is a jerk and I think he is kind of mean. But he is not charged with being mean. He is not charged with being a jerk. He’s charged with running a racketeering enterprise.

And though there was violence that you are going to hear about, you already have, that violence is not part of any RICO. That violence is not connected to sex trafficking and that violence is not prostitution.

There was a name in criminal law for the violence that we will hear about and we will see at this trial. It is called domestic violence. It is called assault. Domestic violence is a very serious matter. I want to say that now. It is a bad, illegal problem, and it is something that the law addresses. We take full responsibility that there was domestic violence in this case.

Domestic violence is not sex trafficking. I want to say it again. Domestic violence is not sex trafficking. Had he been charged with domestic violence, had he been charged with assault, we would not be here right now. We would not be sitting through an eight-week trial. However, he has been charged with different crimes: Sex trafficking, prostitution, racketeering. These are federal crimes with their different statutes, they charge different elements, and he is simply not guilty of those crimes.

One of the central themes of my statements to you will be personal accountability and personal responsibility. As the trial goes on, we will see that with each witness. We are going to take that on ourselves. We will not shy away from the things Mr. Combs did. But we will not, we will not deny his personal responsibility or own the things he did not do.

We are telling you right now that he is physical, that he is a drug user, and I’m telling you he had a bit of a different sex life. For example, you have not heard any evidence in this case, but the prosecutors already told you about lubricant, and you may know of his love of baby oil.

Is that a federal crime? No. You will hear that he got IVs after ingesting drugs. Is that a federal crime? No. He will be responsible. He will be accountable for the things that he did. But we will fight for his freedom throughout the next eight weeks for what he did not do.

And he cannot be the only person in this case who accepts personal responsibility and accountability for his actions. The alleged victims who will testify in this case are capable, strong, adult women. They were all getting something each of them wanted from him and from being in a romantic relationship with him. And these adult, capable, strong women will have to take on the same level of personal responsibility for their lives that he is going to take on for his.

When any person in life makes an adult choice, that is a free choice. A free choice has pros. It has cons. You may think there are better choices. You may think there are worse choices. But that does not eliminate the personal responsibility behind those choices. And each of the women you will hear from, they all had the personal responsibility and the freedom to make the choices that they made.

You will hear from these women. You will see these women. You will meet them. They will sit in that witness chair a few feet away, and you will evaluate them for yourselves. You will see that they are capable, you will see that they are strong, and you will see that they made free choices every single day for years.

As you are listening to the evidence and you listen to them testify, I want you to ask yourselves: What are all the ways that this individual had the ability to make that choice? Ask yourselves: What are they getting from being with Sean Combs? They are not with him because they are stuck or because they are without a choice. The government will try to show you that Sean Combs is the only one getting something from each of the alleged victims who testify in this case. But with each of these individuals, ask yourselves, what is this person getting? They are with him or they are working for him because they are getting something they want from being with him. Now, with each person, that something may be different. And it usually is. But with each person, they are all getting something.

So as you listen to the evidence, watch closely to the role that jealousy plays in this case. We have talked to you, both of us already, about jealousy and how it is pervasive and present in every single relationship. But I want to also let you know it drives a lot of the choices that the alleged victims make here.

Combs is one of those men that, I’ll submit to you, we all know. The evidence is going to show that he is somebody who never married, but he needed to always have a woman around him. He is a many-women man. He has seven children by four different women. And he is the kind of guy who is always in relationships. In fact, he was always in multiple relationships. But critically, he was not always honest about that fact. And you’ll find that even when he was, even when women knew he was in multiple relationships, this would drive a primal jealousy in people. It would drive a lot of the choices you are going to see in this case.

You are also going to see that Sean Combs is extremely jealous. You might think that it’s hypocritical. You might not like it. But you are going to see that he is also extremely jealous. So as you’re listening to the evidence and you’re evaluating the testimony, ask yourself, what is causing that fight? The answer is, without exception, jealousy or drugs. The hitting, the things we are going to take responsibility for, it is typically because of jealousy or drug use. The role of jealousy here is critical and it’s pervasive.

The evidence will show you that, over the course of the 20 years we will examine in this courtroom, we’ll see the same women over and over. They remained in multi-year relationships with him. And I believe that you’ll pretty much know about every relationship he’s had over the past 20 years. Again, that’s whether this is an employee or a girlfriend, you will pretty much know about every girlfriend he has had.

You will see that these women are strong, capable, and they were in love with him. You will see that breaches of trust, infidelity, and jealousy are what drove the domestic violence you will hear about. You will see that alcohol and drugs played a major role in his temper. The evidence is going to show you a very flawed individual, but it will not show you a racketeer, a sex trafficker, or somebody transporting for prostitution.

So, as we’ve said, you’re going to hear from two women: Cassie and Jane. This case is, in large part, about his sexual relationships with these two women. And you’re going to hear that they went to private hotel rooms to engage in what I expect some witnesses at this case to call the swingers lifestyle, which is essentially just a fancier terminology for threesomes by adults.

Sometimes Combs partook in the sex with his girlfriend and the male escort, and other times he watched while the male escort was having sex with his girlfriend. You heard the government call these freak-offs. I expect you will hear that. I expect you will also hear them called parties and entertainment.

You will hear from both Cassie and Jane about these nights. They will testify about their relationships, and you will hear things that should never be heard in a federal courtroom. I think you’ve heard that already. You’ve heard things that may make you uncomfortable at first, that he liked to watch this. You might hear about his kinky sex or his preferences for sex that may make you uncomfortable and may not be what you like to do in your bedroom.

But you are not here to judge him for his sexual preferences. You are not here to judge him for all purposes. You are here to evaluate whether the government can prove beyond a reasonable doubt what they actually charged him with. They cannot. You’ve also heard that in his relationships with both Cassie and Jane, he bought them things. Yes, like every relationship, they got things from their boyfriend. Here, a wealthy rapper, paid for their housing, he paid for Cassie’s car, and he gave them money. These are nice houses that he paid for. It was a nice car that Cassie drove. And they were nice vacations on private planes because he is a wealthy individual. These were vacations that they took together as couples. And as I’ve said, like every relationship, there was jealousy and there were flaws.

But as you evaluate the evidence in this case, remember that he is not charged with being a flawed individual or having a flawed relationship. They did not stay with him over and over again because of force, fraud, or coercion. The evidence in this case will show you that over and over again, day after day. These women fought to be in a relationship. Fought to do what they wanted to do in consensual adult relationships.

This case started with Cassie, so I think it’s best for me to start there. I expect you will hear from her this week. She will sit in this witness box and she will tell you about her 11-year relationship with Sean Combs. You heard that they met when she was an up-and-coming artist. What you didn’t hear is that she had a boyfriend at the time, and he was in a very public relationship with the mother of four of his children named Kim Porter.

After the two fell in love and started dating, she broke up with her producer boyfriend. But Combs, for his part, did not break up with Kim. He remained in a public relationship with her, and that is something that caused extreme jealousy with Cassie. He continued that relationship with Kim Porter until her tragic untimely death from pneumonia in 2018. This is important because, as you look at the evidence and as you evaluate Cassie and Combs’ relationship, you will see that their fights, their cheating, their jealousy, it typically surrounded his cheating or it surrounded hers. This is something that plagued their relationship until the very last day.

The evidence will show you that he was extremely jealous of Cassie’s actual or perceived infidelities, and she was uncontrollably jealous of his. This led to a toxic relationship between two people that I expect the evidence will show deeply, deeply loved each other. Perhaps they did not always show love to one another the way you would with your partner, but they were in a relationship and she was not being trafficked.

You will see that over and over again in this decadelong relationship. These two fought about his inability to remain faithful. I expect Cassie to tell you about the jealousy of Kim Porter and another girlfriend that he started dating in 2014 named Gina. This jealousy is something that plagued their relationship, even the day of the InterContinental video in the elevator bank, that much of you told us during jury selection that you saw. That day, unfortunately, jealousy was on full display. And in combination with the bad drugs that I expect Cassie to testify that Combs took, it led to domestic violence in the elevator bank.

This assault happened almost 10 years ago on March 5 of 2016. I expect that we are all going to see this video many, many times throughout this trial. You are going to see it later today, and I expect you to see it many more times throughout this week. You’re going to see it a lot. But I want to start by saying two things.

First, what Combs did to Cassie on this videotape is indefensible. It is horrible. It’s dehumanizing. It’s violent. It’s virtually every bad word you can think of. And while it is dehumanizing and violent and terrible, the second most important thing is that it is not evidence of sex trafficking. It is evidence of domestic violence. You will see that it is also evidence of the central theme in this case, which is jealousy. That’s what this videotape shows you.

As you watch it later today and as you watch it throughout the week, I want you to look for two things. The first part is Cassie walking out of the hotel room, walking down the hallway. She is carrying two bags, and you see that she makes it to the elevators, and then Combs comes down wearing only a towel. He pulls Cassie by the hoodie and she falls to the floor. He kicks her in her back side and he stomps her on the back of her leg and he starts to drag her by her hoodie back to the hotel room. You will see him walk away momentarily with her bags. And you will see this. Then he comes back around and walks towards her, and she is kind of in the left part of the screen. When he comes towards her, he has nothing in his hand. And when he walks away from her, you will see an illuminated phone in his hand. He wanted this phone and he got it.

Please understand that this video is overwhelming evidence of domestic violence, but it’s overwhelming evidence that this domestic violence is over a phone and not because of sex trafficking. What causes a fight about a phone? We can all use our life experiences to show us that. Phones keep the secrets of infidelity. And you will hear that there was another fight even later that year, again, about a phone. I’m not justifying the assault, not by a long shot, but I’m putting it in the proper context. Because you will see that as soon as he gets the phone, he sits down. He’s visibly disgusted. He broke a vase, and he threw flowers and stayed away.

The video has a second part. Cassie calls security from the hotel phone. The security officer comes to the floor, and I expect you will hear from him later today. Combs is sitting in the chair slumped over. He’s holding his head in his hands and the security officer tells them to leave the public area of the hotel where they are making a commotion. You will see Cassie turn to Combs and gesture to her. And pay attention to the words that I think you will see her say to him, which is, Get back to the room.

Two parts. Both of them important and both of them important to show that Combs assaulted Cassie. But you can’t stop there because he is not charged with assault. Is it because of sex trafficking, as the government is going to argue to you, or is it because of something else?

I expect the evidence, even just this week, will show you that the fight was over a phone. These two stay together two more years after this incident. And to understand how and to understand why is to understand how this relationship ended. You’ll hear that, even into 2018, these two were fighting to stay together. But the evidence will show you that in the summer of that year, of 2018, she woke up to a gossip site that showed a photo of Combs and Gina, the same woman who he had started having an affair with in 2014, or a relationship with, I should say, walking out of The Standard Hotel together.

Cassie could not come back from it. She could not give him another chance. And instead, she made the choice, as she often did, when he was caught in public with Gina, to break up with him and date another man. For Cassie, she made a choice every single day for years. A choice to stay with him. A choice to fight for him. Because for 11 years, that was the better choice. That was her preferred choice. And so she made the choice to stay with him until one day she decided she was going to break up with him because that was her preferred choice.

So it’s important for you to remember as you evaluate the evidence, because she was not coerced to continue or engage in this sex life with Sean Combs. When she made the decision to leave, there were no repercussions, as the government hinted. She made the choice to leave. She communicated it to him and she ran into the arms of another man, a physical trainer who Combs had hired to train her.

So I will ask you, ladies and gentlemen, pay close attention to the messages, the realtime communications between these two individuals, and the messages surrounding their breakup. Does Combs release the videotapes the government was just talking about? No, he doesn’t. You will hear that the government raided two of his homes, you have already heard that, over a year ago. They seized countless electronic devices. The only freak-off videos you will see or hear about at this trial came from her devices that she kept for five years.

So when the government talks about power and control, who had the power? Who had the control? The government did not find any freak-off videos with Cassie on those devices. And so going back during the time of Cassie and Combs’ breakup, Cassie is already dating her now husband. She is with him for months as she is breaking up with Combs, all while telling Combs she still loves him.

And then in November of 2018, Kim Porter tragically passes away from pneumonia. Knowing that Combs would be distraught and wanting to be there for him, she did everything she could to be there. She came to memorial service at his home. She flew to Kim’s home state of Georgia to be at the funeral. Don’t lose the sight of the fact that, amidst a breakup, all the way at the end of 2018, she flew to a funeral service to be there for him and support him and his family during this trying time of their life.

And at the service at their home, Combs, to a group of loved ones, former employees, and others, and to many people on social media who were paying respects, said, and I quote, “Kim was my soulmate.” In Cassie’s presence for everybody to hear, he said, She was my soulmate. The end of the relationship between Cassie and Combs is important, and I want you to focus on the evidence of how and why it ended. When Combs publicly said Kim Porter was his soulmate to all the people around him who were there, for the first time maybe ever, Cassie realized all the things she would not be.

I expect many witnesses at this trial to tell you she wanted to be Combs’ wife. I expect even she may tell you that. That is what she spent 11 years trying to get. And in one day, it became clear to Cassie she was never going to be that. And if she was never going to be Combs’ wife, if she was never going to be the love of his life, then she would leave. And that is what she did, on her terms, her choice, for reasons that, for her, were the right reasons.

This is where bringing personal experience to this jury matters. This is something we have all been through. That one life event you can point to where you can say that is when I knew it was over. Because that is what this was for her. Because this was a relationship, although toxic at times, like every other relationship, it was not based on coercion. It was not based on force. At a certain point, you know you’re not going to get what you need from that other person and you leave.

After Kim’s funeral, they never saw each other again. The very first time that this former couple will see each other after six and a half years of a breakup is in this courtroom later today or tomorrow. We are all going to witness their closure, and that is because she moved on with her life and he moved on with his. You will see that she married the trainer. She had two children with him. And she’s pregnant with her third. And Combs also moved on with his life.

As you listen to her testimony, as you read her messages closely, evaluate what Combs’ intent was at the time. Evaluate what he understood about what she wanted during those 11 years that they spent together. What he understood, I expect the messages to show you, was that she was a willing participant in their sex life. That was a voluntary adult choice by two capable adults. What Cassie may testify to this week, six years after a breakup, is not a match for the realtime evidence that you will have. The realtime text messages I urge you to read. Evaluate his intent, which is the only thing that matters here.

The government also talked to you a lot about Jane. She is the other woman that the government alleges Combs sex-trafficked. She was his girlfriend of three years, and she comes into his life several years after the Cassie breakup. He, I think you will find in the evidence, is a little bit different in 2020 and 2021 than he was when he was dating with Cassie. And I think the most important reason you will see is that he was more upfront about his dating life. Rather than saying that he was only dating one person, he was very upfront with Jane. I expect her to tell you that he was dating multiple different women.

However, as I started my opening statement, this did not stop the jealousy. Jane’s relationship with Combs was plagued by jealousy. Their relationship was not the 11-year public romance that Combs and Cassie had. The problem is that Jane wished that it was. The government told you that their relationship was not public. You are going to hear from Jane why that was. There were many different reasons why that was.

And so, after a period of time, their relationship becomes primarily sexual. Jane is also older than Cassie was when she started dating him, and she was living her own life in a different state raising her child. She is a capable, strong adult woman. And you are going to hear, as I expect that you’ve already heard, that pretty soon after her relationship with Combs started, he brought up the idea of whether she would want to have sex with another man. Again, like a consensual threesome. And Combs would watch. She agreed, and they went to a private hotel room, away from his employees, away from family. And I expect that she will testify that she enjoyed that night. She laid down on the couch after and said to herself, like, wow, I can’t believe I just did that.

And you will see that Combs really began to love these hotel nights with her. And I expect that she will testify that she began to do everything possible to make these nights incredible for Combs. That includes finding the best male entertainment to join them, to wear the outfits he would find the sexiest, and saying all the things during these nights that would excite him.

I expect she will testify she did this because she loved him. She was desperate to spend time with him, to be with him, and ultimately, to give him something none of the other girlfriends that he was dating at the time were giving him. She will tell you that she tried many times to change the tenor of the relationship from one of a purely sexual nature to something maybe deeper or more meaningful. I’m not sure exactly how she will put that to you, but she will testify that it always came back to what they would call parties, which were these nights in hotel rooms.

And the evidence will show you that she did it over and over again for three years because she made the choice. And this became their time together. This became their sex life. And I expect that she will testify that she realized that if she didn’t have these hotel nights with Combs, they may not get their alone time together, which is time she so deeply craved.

I expect she will tell you that she kept coming back over and over again because she did it for the affection, she did it for the love, for the cuddle, and because she knew it would make him happy. And she wanted more than anything to make him happy. She was unable to resist him emotionally, and her desire to be with him outweighed all other considerations of hers.

The government told you about a phone call they had in November of 2023. I expect the evidence will show you that even after this phone call, she continued. She flew out to see him many more times, and continued willingly engaging in these nights. The evidence is going to show you a toxic and dysfunctional relationship between these two individuals. And you may think to yourself, wow, he is a really bad boyfriend. But the evidence is going to show you that she is a capable, strong woman who willingly engaged in their sex life so they could spend time together. That is simply not sex trafficking.

I expect her to testify that she was a willing participant, and being a willing participant in your own sex life is not sex trafficking. I expect her to also testify that there were nights she engaged in the sex because she hoped she could turn their relationship from one of a more sexual relationship into something more. And she will testify that if she walked away, she would have lost him. That is not something she was willing to do.

And as I said, you will see her jealousy on full display at this trial. And you will see that she was willing to engage in these nights with Combs, and then she would be on social media after, and she would see he was with another one of his girlfriends, either out to dinner or traveling, and she would send messages with regret afterwards. These are born out of jealousy, which was the root of their troubles. And regret does not mean that she was coerced. Her jealousy drove her to make the moves that she made.

As I said, every single witness in this case had free choice to make the choices that they made. The jealousy of other women in Combs’ life was one of hers. Seeing the other women that he would be on social media posts with or otherwise drove her to try to be in first place and made her more desirous of their time together. This was the way to get there and the evidence will show you that that is simply not a crime.

The government also told you about a night a year ago where Jane hit Combs. Once again, as I said, this was a night born out of jealousy. You will hear, as you’ve already heard, that he also hit her back. But what you didn’t hear was the start of the fight. She was overcome by jealousy that night. She slammed his head down on her kitchen counter. This is how the fight started. I do not want to justify this night. I do not want to justify the assault. But I simply am here to tell you that the evidence will show you that it starts because she slams his head on her kitchen counter.

And you are also going to hear that less than a month or approximately a month after this assault, an incident of domestic violence at her home, she flew to Combs’ home in Miami. She called an escort and had what I expect her to say was one of her best hotel nights that she had with one of their regular escorts.

Now, during the testimony of both Cassie and Jane, I expect the government is going to put in a bunch of videotapes of the so-called freak-offs or hotel nights or wild king nights, however you would like to call them, into evidence. These videotapes depict what we’ve been telling you about, Sean Combs, one of his girlfriends, and a man. These videos, we believe, are powerful evidence that the sexual conduct in this case was consensual and not based on coercion.

But I want to say one thing to you now. Some of you may find them hard to watch. Not because they are violent, not because they are non-consensual, but because they were never meant to be seen by people outside of that room. They are in one word — intimate. And they were always meant to remain that way. The reason these videos will be seen by you is because the government has chosen to take possession of these videos and to put them into evidence in a federal courtroom. Playing these videos will feel invasive, but the government has charged him with sex trafficking, and the evidence of the alleged sex trafficking is on these videos. This is why you will have to see them.

You may hear about other women. The government told you about someone named Mia, for example. I urge you to pay attention to these other women’s realtime communications with Combs. Ask yourself, why are they making this allegation now? What is their motive? You will conclude, like you will with every single other witness in this case, that everybody who testifies has a motive.

With Mia, for example, I ask you to evaluate her motive when you listen to her testimony. What are the reasons she is saying what she might be saying now, what she never said before, and certainly never said when she first started cooperating with the government? This is someone you should evaluate her messages carefully, ones of unbelievable love for Combs throughout her employment.

You are also going to hear from several other past employees of his. They will try to paint a picture for you of a hostile workplace. As I’ve said with nearly every single witness in this case, when these people testify, ask yourself: Why did anybody, if they were so scared and if this was so hostile, ever call the police? Why not? I expect that the evidence will show you that the testimony against him, their former boss, for many, not all, is vindictive or they are being subpoenaed to give it.

Like every other witness, ask yourself: What is the something? What is the reason that they stayed. You will find, with every single person, they had a something. So when you hear from the witnesses who testify here who will tell you they were victimized, and you ask yourself, What is their motive? For many of them, the answer is simple: Money.

This criminal case started because of Cassie. Not because she went to law enforcement with her allegations, but because she filed a public lawsuit against Combs in November of 2023, at this time when she was having financial trouble and living in her parents’ modest home in Connecticut with her family. Rather than go to law enforcement about what had allegedly happened to her, she went to a civil lawyer who is here today.

I expect that this trial, from nearly every witness that you hear from, they will tell you that instead of going to law enforcement, after either their employment ended for the alleged victims, they went to a civil lawyer for a money grab. They will claim that they were so afraid of this man that they could, of course, not go to the police because he was so powerful. But they were not so afraid that they could not go to civil lawyers to make money demands against him. Demands for unbelievable amounts of money. More than any of us have ever made.

Cassie, for example, will tell you that she first made a demand on Combs for $30 million. Another witness will tell you that in a breach of contract case, she made a demand for $22 million. And as you listen to these witnesses — and there will be many, as the prosecutor told you — who made civil demands against him, I want you to ask yourself: How many millions of reasons does this witness swearing to tell the truth, and nothing but the truth, have to lie? How many hundreds of thousands of reasons does this witness swearing to tell the truth, and nothing but the truth, have to lie?

Will you really believe that these people who have demanded an unimaginable amount of money from Mr. Combs would have traded all of that to not have been abused? Because if that is the case, I submit that you will consider, why did they never go to law enforcement?

So, in closing, the evidence will be framed to prove from the government, they will attempt to prove racketeering influence and corrupt organizations act charge, two sex trafficking charges, and two prostitution counts. The evidence you will hear at this trial will not make out any of them. The conspiracy charged is that Combs allegedly committed two counts of acts of kidnapping, one act of arson, a bribery, an obstruction of justice, forced labor, and drug trafficking.

I’m going to take these briefly, briefly in turn, and then I’m going to ask you to evaluate the evidence by the witnesses who will testify about these acts.

First, he did not commit any of these acts. In terms of the alleged bribery and the obstruction of justice, this relates to the InterContinental Hotel incident that we’ve talked about this morning. You will hear, as you already did, that he paid money to a security guard at the InterContinental so the footage would go away. This was solely, solely related to preventing bad publicity for both Combs and Cassie, and had nothing to do with obstructing a law enforcement investigation. No law enforcement investigation existed, period. That is a requirement. And so the evidence will show you he simply did not commit those acts.

As to the kidnappings and the arson, I submit that you are not going to find there were any kidnappings, and he was simply not involved in the alleged arson. The government told you that the kidnappings relate to one employee, who I am telling you the evidence will show worked for Combs for almost a decade. As you listen to her testimony and evaluate: Was this person actually kidnapped? I expect the evidence is going to show you that, even after the criminal investigation into Combs started, she asked to work for him again 12 years after her employment ended. 12 years after she claimed she had been kidnapped the last time. Now, more than a decade after these kidnapping acts. And so the evidence is going to show you that he simply did not commit them.

As to the drug trafficking, I submit the evidence is going to show you that the drugs are personal-use drugs for him and, at times, the women he was with. And those drugs have nothing to do with an enterprise.

As to the forced labor, you will see that Combs worked hard, his employees worked hard, but they were there to do something great and novel for his lawful businesses. It was not forced. Being there was an adult, free choice like everything else in this case.

Second, the RICO conspiracy requires a group effort, even if the group is two people. And there will be no evidence of that. So as you are listening to the evidence, ask yourself: Who is Combs actually conspiring with to violate the racketeering influence corrupt organization act? The answer will be no one.

Finally, the last of the charges I will talk to you about are the two counts that charge him with causing interstate travel for the purposes of prostitution. For him to be guilty, I expect the judge will tell you that he had to intentionally engage in what he knows to be prostitution. What the evidence is going to be is that he was paying different men for their time and an experience.

Think about the pornography industry, for example. Actors in pornographic movies are paid for their time, and generally they have sex. Otherwise, it wouldn’t be pornography. You also hear about many companies, I expect you’ll hear from one later today, called Hunkomania, a company called Cowboys4Angels that advertise online across the country where you can pay money for time and an experience.

These escort companies are common and they do not advertise themselves as money for sex. They advertise themselves as money for time and money for an experience. And that is what Sean Combs was doing. He was paying money for that experience.

So, in closing, I ask you once again to listen carefully to all of the evidence. You are not here to judge or impose your moral beliefs onto this man. You are here as a jury of his peers to determine whether the government can meet its burden of proving beyond a reasonable doubt that he committed these crimes.

When you hear the evidence, when you go back into the jury room and evaluate the evidence in light of the crimes that are actually charged here, you will return the only verdict that the evidence demands, that is he not guilty of these crimes.

The project, touted as the first of its kind in the subregion, promises to bring globally acclaimed luxury brands such as Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and Prada to Ghana, positioning the country as a retail gateway to the African continent.

The CEO of Seka Group, Fuat Kiyagan, shared the company’s enthusiasm and vision for the initiative during an exclusive interview.

We are happy about how Ghanaians and the government were happy about the project.
This project will be a gateway to other African countries after we successfully establish it in Ghana.” Fuat stated.

With the Expo-city projected to become a major commercial hub, local stakeholders have hailed the development as a game-changer for Ghana’s economy.
Resident business consultant for the project, Dr. David Kofi Wuaku, emphasised the wider socio-economic benefits it is expected to bring.

He noted that the centre would serve as an opportunity for job creation, expansion of the economy and also create an opportunity to exchange talent and foster the marketing of new brands.

Sammy Gyamfi must disclose source of funds – Poku-Adusei

0

The Member of Parliament for Bekwai, Ralph Poku-Adusei, has called on Sammy Gyamfi, the acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (Goldbod), to publicly clarify the source of funds behind his recently publicised dollar gift to priestess-turned-evangelist Patricia Asiamah, widely known as Nana Agradaa—a gesture that has sparked widespread discussion and speculation.

This follows the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) accusing the Goldbod Acting Chief Executive Officer of flaunting opulence and leading an ostentatious lifestyle.

Addressing a press conference, NPP National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye argued that the party’s concerns were further validated by Gyamfi’s mode of transport on the day the video was recorded.

In an interview on Citi Eyewitness News on Tuesday, May 13, Poku-Adusei emphasised the need for transparency and accountability, particularly in light of Gyamfi’s new role at the helm of the GoldBod—a strategic body established to manage Ghana’s gold.

“What could put an end to all the speculation, in my view, is for Sammy Gyamfi to come out and state clearly whether those funds belong to him,” Poku-Adusei said. “If they do, then he must explain how he acquired them—and more importantly, justify how he was able to come by such an amount.”

The MP insisted that providing answers to the source of funds and how he acquired them is necessary to restore public confidence and eliminate any doubts surrounding Gyamfi’s financial dealings.

“I strongly believe that in the interest of transparency and in putting clarity to certain matters, he is able to answer these questions. I am expecting that, as astute as he is in communication, he will certainly provide answers to put these matters to rest,” he added.

While acknowledging that owning a luxury vehicle such as a Range Rover is not unusual for a lawyer, Poku-Adusei cautioned that Gyamfi’s new position places him under greater public scrutiny.

“We are looking at someone who has assumed a position as CEO of the GoldBod, and clearly, we need to project public confidence in this Goldbod because it is fairly new,” he said.

“We are aware of the government allocating $279 million into this revolving fund for GoldBod. So if all of a sudden somebody who didn’t have a Range Rover 2025 Autobiography is now seen driving one, then I think he owes it to the good people of Ghana to offer some explanations to put all these speculations to rest.”

The new release marks a bold evolution in her sound, blending eclectic influences from afrobeat, soul, and subtle highlife undertones to create a perfect sound.

Produced by the acclaimed beatmaker Tubani Music, “Amele “is her second Afrobeat song after “Mash Up”.

Aklerh reveals that “Amele” represents her deliberate step  to explore other music styles aside the reggae and dancehall genres that initially defined her career and branding.

“As a youngster growing up, I listened to various musical styles, and working with Tubani Music allowed me to explore these sides of myself I hadn’t explored before.

The result is this amazing musical expression of my feelings,” she shares, emphasizing her artistic growth and desire to expand her musical horizons.

Industry experts and music pundits who have previewed “Amele” praise it as a good tune, forecasting that the song will cement Aklerh’s growing popularity in a competitive industry with men dominating.

Aklerh’s rise to prominence began with the hit “Labadi Gyal” featuring Jah Lead, and she quickly followed with the well-received Dancehall Queen EP in April 2024.

The EP included standout tracks like “Body Good” featuring Yaw Gray, “Run D Town,” “Odo,” and “Money,” which collectively solidified her reputation as a dynamic force in Ghana’s music scene.

Beyond her recordings, Aklerh has demonstrated her influence as a live performer and cultural ambassador, notably hosting the Queen of the Coast concert in 2024.

The event drew major talents such as Ras Kuuku, Osagyefo, and Jahwi, further showcasing her leadership in the industry.

“Amele” will be available on all major streaming platforms starting Friday, May 16, 2025, offering fans and new listeners the chance to experience this vibrant new sound from one of Ghana’s most promising female artistes.

Patriotic Action Forum demands Sammy Gyamfi’s dismissal over dollar scandal

Members of the PAF have called for Sammy Gyamfi to be sacked amid gift controversy Members of the PAF have called for Sammy Gyamfi to be sacked amid gift controversy

The Patriotic Action Forum (PAF) has called for the immediate dismissal of the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, following the emergence of a viral video in which he is seen publicly gifting dollar bills to preacher Evangelist Patricia Asiedua, popularly known as Nana Agradaa.

In a strongly-worded statement released on Monday, May 12, the forum did not only label Sammy Gyamfi’s conduct as reckless and inappropriate, but also a blatant violation of the public trust.

“Sammy Gyamfi, barely four months into his role, is at the centre of this shameful new culture. The same man who has built a career attacking public officials is now spending a jaw-dropping $10,000 (approx. GHS 140,000) on fuel for a luxury Lexus V8, not for state business or a national emergency, but to chauffeur a former fetish priestess turned evangelist,” the statement read.

The group also took aim at President John Dramani Mahama’s administration, accusing it of fostering a culture of opulence, arrogance, and hypocrisy while the average Ghanaian endures worsening economic hardship.

PAF described the viral act of dollar-spraying as “grotesque abuse of office” and “unclouded arrogance,” especially at a time when many Ghanaians struggle to afford basic commodities.

“Ghanaians are being punished for trusting Mahama’s deceptive ‘Reset’ agenda,” the group said, pointing to rising living costs, job losses, and a resurgence of power outages (dumsor) as evidence of the administration’s failings.

They also labeled Sammy Gyamfi a hypocrite, citing his previous criticisms of high-profile individuals such as Cecilia Dapaah and Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

“There’s a saying: ‘He who seeks equity must come with clean hands.’ Clearly, Mr. Gyamfi’s hands are drenched in the very opulence and abuse he once condemned,” the group stated.

PAF called on President Mahama to either dismiss Gyamfi or demand his resignation immediately, arguing that failure to act would undermine the recently launched Code of Conduct for Government Appointees, which emphasizes integrity, impartiality, and professionalism.

“This is a litmus test for Mahama’s leadership. If he fails to act, it confirms what Ghanaians have long suspected: that the so-called ‘Reset’ is just a smokescreen to enrich party loyalists at the expense of the public,” the statement added.

The group issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the President to take action or face a potential legal challenge questioning the credibility of the new Code

The pacey forward has scored six goals and provided six assists in La Liga, ranking as the club’s second-highest scorer and third in assists across the league, behind only Lamine Yamal and Raphinha.

His efforts have been crucial in Bilbao’s push for Champions League qualification, with the club currently sitting 4th with 64 points and three games to go.

In Europe, Inaki also added five goals and an assist in Bilbao’s Europa League run to the semifinals.

Abdul Mumin, despite a season-ending knee injury, has also earned a nomination. The Rayo Vallecano defender made 24 league appearances, scoring twice and assisting once.

He played a key role in six clean sheets and tallied 120 clearances, 37 tackles, and 23 interceptions, without conceding a single penalty.

They face stiff competition from top African talents including Reinildo Mandava (Atletico Madrid), Flavien Enzo Boyomo (Osasuna), and the Villarreal trio of Pape Gueye, Nicolas Pepe, and Logan Costa.

Citizen Eye Ghana hails Julius Debrah’s leadership, backs his role in economic recovery

0

Citizen Eye Ghana, a civil society organisation, has praised the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, for his decisive handling of a recent controversy involving the Acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board.

The CEO was seen in a viral video giving out an undisclosed amount of dollar-denominated currency to Evangelist Patricia, prompting public concern.

Speaking in an interview on Okay FM on Monday, May 12, the group’s leader, Alex Tetteh, applauded Debrah for inviting the official for questioning.

He described the move as a testament to Debrah’s commitment to accountability and professionalism in public service.

“There is a reason why President Mahama trusts Julius Debrah with such big tasks—he knows he has the wisdom and experience to handle them,” he stated.

Tetteh also commended Debrah for what he called a “quiet but strategic role” in Ghana’s recent economic turnaround under President John Dramani Mahama.

He credited Debrah’s operational discipline and steady leadership with helping to restore investor confidence and contributing to the cedi’s appreciation.

“While others branded themselves as economic whiz kids and delivered catastrophic currency depreciation, Julius Debrah has focused on results, not words,” Tetteh said, taking a swipe at former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who chaired the Economic Management Team under the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

According to Tetteh, Ghana no longer has use for “theoretical economists” whose legacies are marked by economic hardship. He instead urged Ghanaians to embrace experienced and loyal leaders like Debrah.

Tetteh described Debrah’s long-standing political grooming under former Presidents Jerry John Rawlings, John Evans Atta Mills, and John Mahama as “unmatched preparation for national leadership.” He also lauded his tenure as Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, citing significant progress in decentralisation and rural empowerment.

“He understands the grassroots. His time in that ministry transformed him into a true servant of the people,” Tetteh stated, adding that Debrah is “easily the best chief of staff in the last 16 years.”

Turning to internal matters within the NPP, Tetteh issued a caution ahead of the party’s upcoming internal elections. He warned that ignoring the will of grassroots supporters in the selection of a flagbearer—particularly Kennedy Agyapong—could destabilise the party.

“If the NPP cannot uphold fairness, we will rally behind a credible and experienced alternative like Julius Debrah,” he said. “We will not stand by and watch injustice destroy the democratic fabric of the party.”
