We’re not burning reserves to hold the cedi – BoG Deputy Governor

0

The First Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Mumuni Zakaria, has dismissed claims that the central bank is depleting its foreign reserves to prop up the cedi, insisting that the recent gains in the local currency are genuine and sustainable.

“If we were that heavy in terms of our support to the market, we would not be doing well with our reserves accumulation,” Dr. Zakaria told Joy News.

He described the cedi’s rally as credible and backed by real market confidence, rejecting speculation that the Bank of Ghana is drawing down its buffers.

“Unfortunately, if this were the case, market players who are very smart would have seen through it,” he explained. “The rally would have been short-lived. They wouldn’t trust you.”

Contrary to such speculation, Dr. Zakaria revealed that the central bank has been accumulating reserves faster than expected.

“We are even accumulating reserves much, much faster than what has been expected,” he said. “And that is why the market really thinks this can be sustained.”

On the quality of the reserves, he added: “These are not debt-creating reserves. These are organically accumulated reserves. At the end of April, we had over $10 billion. We expect to hit $11 billion by the end of June.”

Dr. Zakaria noted that these reserve levels exceed International Monetary Fund (IMF) targets. “The IMF program set a target of three months of import cover. We are now at 3.7 months using IMF metrics,” he said. “If you include petroleum funds, we’re around 4.7 months. That’s quite a lot.”

Highlighting the bank’s strategic approach, he said, “We have devised very strategic ways of meeting market demand while still accumulating external buffers.”

“This time is different,” he emphasized.

Dr. Zakaria also cited other factors supporting the cedi’s strength, including the IMF Staff Level Agreement, which sent a positive signal globally.

“We’ve had a Staff Level Agreement with the IMF. That sent a strong message globally. It means things are changing.”

He pointed to progress in inflation management and fiscal consolidation.

“Inflation dropped from nearly 24% to 21.2%. That’s progress,” he said. “Fiscal consolidation is also taking shape. Public sector borrowing has slowed sharply compared to last year.”

The Deputy Governor also spoke about liquidity management. “We’ve sterilised three times more than last year,” he explained. “So we’re keeping cedi liquidity tight while still meeting forex demand.”

“We are not intervening recklessly,” he stressed. “We’re building confidence, not burning reserves.”

“This is not smoke and mirrors,” Dr. Zakaria concluded. “This is real. And we intend to sustain it.”

Cedi surge fueled by reforms, gold program, and global trends – Economist

0

An economist and economic policy analyst at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Prof. Eric F. Oteng-Abayie, has attributed the Cedi’s resurgence to a confluence of domestic policy reforms and favourable global economic conditions.

According to Prof. Oteng-Abayie, the remarkable appreciation of the Ghanaian Cedi up by approximately 16% against the US dollar by April 2025 has been spurred by strategic initiatives such as the Bank of Ghana’s Gold4Oil and GoldBod programs. Significant fiscal discipline under the IMF-backed economic recovery plan, and rising investor confidence.

“The Cedi’s recovery is no coincidence. It is the result of deliberate policy choices, particularly the Bank of Ghana’s Gold4Oil and GoldBod initiatives, which have significantly bolstered foreign exchange reserves and investor confidence,” he stated.

The Bank’s requirement that 20% of gold export proceeds be converted into cedis, in addition to a $490 million forex market intervention in April, has helped stabilise foreign exchange supply and boost the local currency.

He also cited the temporary suspension of external debt repayments and improvements in Ghana’s credit rating from Selective Default to CCC+ as contributing factors. “Ghana’s fiscal consolidation under the IMF program, including the removal of distortionary taxes like the E-levy and COVID-19 levy, has further reinforced credibility in the economy,” he added.

These efforts, combined with strong export performance particularly gold and cocoa, whose prices have surged to record levels have significantly improved Ghana’s balance of payments and foreign exchange inflows.

Globally, the weakening of the US dollar due to trade tensions and economic uncertainties has provided a favorable backdrop for the Cedi’s recovery. The depreciation of the US dollar index (DXY) by about 10% since January has benefited many emerging markets, including Ghana.

“The weakening of the US dollar due to global recession fears and trade tensions has worked in Ghana’s favour. At the same time, record-high prices for gold and cocoa have boosted our export earnings,” he explained.

However, Prof. Oteng-Abayie cautioned that while the Cedi’s appreciation has led to a reduction in inflation down to 21.2% by April 2025, ordinary Ghanaians have yet to feel the impact in their daily lives due to persistent price stickiness.

“We are seeing a classic case of price stickiness where prices go up quickly during currency depreciation but come down slowly even when the Cedi strengthens,” he observed.

He explained that businesses are slow to reduce prices, citing uncertainty over the currency’s stability, high operational costs, and long-term cost structures shaped during inflationary periods.

The economist drew parallels with historical experiences in 2007 and 2017, where currency stabilisation efforts failed to yield broad consumer relief due to structural constraints.

“The current situation mirrors past experiences, such as the 2017 and 2007 episodes, where currency stabilisation alone was not enough. Without structural reforms, the gains are often short-lived,” he remarked.

He stressed the need for policy measures to address domestic cost pressures, promote market competition, and diversify Ghana’s economy beyond commodities to ensure long-term gains.

In his recommendations, Prof. Oteng-Abayie called for continued fiscal discipline, energy sector reform, transport infrastructure development, stronger market regulation, and increased local production capacity.

“To ensure long-term stability, Ghana must tackle domestic cost pressures, invest in infrastructure, strengthen market regulation, and diversify its economic base beyond commodity exports,” he advised.

He also urged authorities to manage public expectations transparently and support gradual price adjustments, especially in import-dependent sectors.

The Cedi has become one of the world’s best-performing currencies in 2025, following a volatile 2024 when it lost nearly 24% of its value.

This year’s 16% gain has coincided with declining inflation and improved macroeconomic confidence, offering a window of opportunity for deeper reforms to achieve lasting economic stability.

How Flick turned Barca’s ‘young musketeers’ into champions

0

When former Bayern Munich and Germany boss Flick arrived at Barcelona, he found a number of players were performing well below expectations.

Experienced stars like Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha and Frenkie de Jong were low in confidence, simply because of the lack of trust they felt they had from their previous coach, Xavi.

Raphinha would rarely play more than 60 minutes before being replaced, while Lewandowski was made to play with his back to goal in a style alien to him.

In addition, none of the three felt particularly welcome at the club with De Jong rightly convinced that Barcelona wanted to sell him to help alleviate their financial plight.

One of the first things Flick did was to tell the three of them how important they were to his plans. This season Lewandowski is top scorer with 25 goals, while Raphinha has a league tally of 18.

Flick also sensed an established culture where the club’s irrepressible youth was not at the heart of the team, and not given the prominence they believed they merited.

Youngsters had been given their debuts because of financial constraints – and Xavi deserves praise for working under such restrictions – but they wanted more. They wanted to take over the team.

Flick’s approach allowed the likes of Gavi, Yamal, Alejandro Balde (21), and Marc Casado (also 21) to do just that. He helped them find their voices, even going as far as allowing them to pick the dressing-room music.

That trust was repaid a hundred times over and reflected on the pitch with a youthful and carefree – some might even say naive – style of play.

He also always remained very close to those who didn’t play regularly, stressing that with the inevitable injuries all clubs have to face, their time would come.

Flick has asked the club for very little so far, paying money for just Dani Olmo and Pau Victor in the summer and adding no-one in the winter transfer window.

The 60-year-old German also strongly believes no-one knows their fitness better than the players themselves. So, any plans to rest the likes of Yamal or Raphinha are not taken without asking them – again building the trust and his popularity among the team.

He also never allows himself to be influenced by the very powerful and demanding Barcelona media, and has remained honest to his players – an approach severely tested when they lost four games and collected just five points out of a possible 21 before the Christmas break.

Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the New Patriotic Party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, has formally declared his candidacy for the party’s National Chairmanship, leveraging his decade-long record of personal investment in NPP’s growth.

Known widely as Chairman Wontumi, the political organizer made his case during a televised interview, emphasizing his history of self-funded party development initiatives.

“I’ve supported this party consistently from the grassroots without holding government office,” Wontumi stated, referencing his financing of nomination forms for thousands of aspirants in 2014 and 2018. His most significant disclosed contribution remains the 1 billion old cedis (approximately $100,000) injection into the 2015 National Congress in Tamale, which stabilized party operations during a critical transition period.

The candidate’s political resume includes three terms as Ashanti Regional Chairman and prior leadership in the Bosomtwe Constituency, where he established physical party infrastructure. His campaign narrative highlights proactive resource mobilization, including nationwide distribution of campaign materials ahead of the NPP’s 2016 electoral victory.

This bid emerges as the ruling party prepares for internal elections that will shape its structure ahead of Ghana’s 2024 general polls. Political analysts note Wontumi’s challenge will be translating regional influence into national consensus, particularly against potential candidates with broader governmental experience.

The NPP’s national executive elections are expected to draw multiple contenders, with the outcome significantly influencing the party’s strategic direction for the next electoral cycle.

‘Side chick’ demands GH¢3 million after discovering her boss is married, drags him to live TV show

0

A young woman from Tanoso in the Ashanti Region, identified as Yaa Dede, has confronting her former boss and lover, Sam Darko, on live television, demanding a staggering 30 billion old cedis (equivalent to GH¢3 million) in compensation for what she describes as emotional deception and betrayal.

Appearing on Sompa Nkomo, a social programme on Sompa TV hosted by controversial Ghanaian broadcaster Oheneni Adazoa, Yaa Dede shared a tearful account of how her relationship with her former boss turned sour after she discovered he was married.

“Someone really did me bad and I’m very pained,” she began.

Yaa explained that she was employed at a company owned by Sam Darko, who after seven months of working there, began offering her rides home. Despite her initial resistance, she eventually accepted, leading to tension with her then-boyfriend who suspected infidelity and eventually ended their relationship.

Following her breakup, Yaa says Sam Darko took advantage of her vulnerable state and proposed a romantic relationship, falsely claiming that his wife had passed away.

“He later proposed to me and I agreed, so, we started dating, but he never took me to his house, always hotels. He said his mother and sister were troublesome so as a result he cannot take me to his house,” she narrated.

Yaa said she later demanded to be taken to his home or to end the relationship, but he refused.

“He said he had invested in me and wouldn’t let me go because he has supported me and my mother which is true, he has really helped me but he has deceived me that is what is paining me,” she revealed.

Yaa further detailed that her turning point came when a woman, claiming to be Sam Darko’s wife, visited her at work.

“She told me that her husband had spoken highly of me and they were planning to promote me. That was when I realized I had been deceived. He never told me he was married,” she said.

“They told me that the company is not for him and the wife is the boss, so he has really deceived me and I want 30 billion as compensation from him.”

In response, Sam Darko, who also appeared on the programme, admitted to lying about his marital status.

He justified the lie by accusing Yaa of constantly demanding money from him which led him into proposing to her.

He further claimed he had intentions of marrying Yaa as a second wife and insisted he would not pay her any money should she decide to leave the relationship.

Russia ‘will destroy you all and your cities will burn’ threatens Putin’s pal

Mad Vlad stooge Vladimir Solovyov told viewers of his Russian state TV talk show ‘man was created for war and a Russian man was created for victory’ after the stark warning

Vladimir Solovyov issued the threat on his TV show

Russia “will destroy you all and your cities will burn” is the latest direct threat issued by one of Putin’s cronies to European nations who get involved in the Ukraine war.

The menacing words were uttered by Mad Vlad stooge Vladimir Solovyov on his eponymous state TV show on Sunday. He told his audience: “When I see the French and German, when I hear their discussions about Ukraine and about Zelenskyy. I can’t feel anything but deep, justified hatred towards them.

“For this reason, when French and German journalists are asking me, ‘is it true?’. Yes, it’s true, we will destroy all of you. We will destroy your cities if you get involved in this war.

“And right now you’re positioning yourselves as participants in this war. We will destroy all of you. Your cities will burn and suffer the way cities of Donbas are suffering.”

He added: “For this reason, I will put it this way. One of the Western newspapers quoted only a part of my phrase. Yes, I said it and I will keep saying it.

“Man was created for war and a Russian man was created for victory.” It comes as rumours of a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine continue to swirl as Zelenskyy hinted a truce could begin this week after “personally” talking to Putin in Turkey.

The Ukrainian President’s comments were shared to social media after being urged by US President Donald Trump to accept Russia’s latest proposals. The Kremlin has allegedly offered in-person talks between the two warring nations in Turkey on Thursday.

Ukraine and its allies had previously demanded Russia accept a 30-day ceasefire before beginning talks, but Putin reportedly declined in favour of direct negotiation. President Zelenskyy has shared updates on the unfolding situation to X.

In the tweets, the Ukrainian leader shared: “We await a full and lasting ceasefire, starting from tomorrow, to provide the necessary basis for diplomacy. There is no point in prolonging the killings.

“And I will be waiting for Putin in Turkiye on Thursday. Personally. I hope that this time the Russians will not look for excuses.”

On Sunday, Trump insisted Ukraine should agree to Putin’s peace talks proposal “IMMEDIATELY.” He wrote: “At least they will be able to determine whether or not a deal is possible, and if it is not, European leaders, and the U.S., will know where everything stands, and can proceed accordingly!”

Some of the participants

The National Folklore Board and the Centre for National Culture has invited institutions, artistes and professionals to collaborate and contribute to the project dubbed “Unfolding Cultural Heritage” in Greater Accra.

The initiative aims to build capacities in the cultural and creative sectors, by supporting the exposure and reinterpretation of oral and intangible heritage through the promotion of social impact initiatives for the youth and families as well as encouraging the use of digital technologies in storytelling and sharing of knowledge.

The project seeks to promote collaboration between cultural professionals, artistes, institutions, and local communities.

The project will connect the Greater Accra Region with the Salento Region in Italy through art residencies, cultural exchanges, training programmes, and collaborative workshops to display and review bodiless heritage through arts.

It will also highlight the role of modern arts as tools for intercultural exchange, community engagement, and sustainable development, in alignment with the UN’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and the African Union’s Agenda 2063.

There will be an online training and co-design programme with four thematic workshops open to freelancers, public and private organisations from Europe and Africa, as well as the virtual training which will focus on the following topics: Museums and Libraries in the 2030 Agenda, Arts and New Languages for the Emergence and Enhancement of Intangible Heritage, Community Engagement, New Technologies and New Narratives.

Artistic residencies and field research will involve two Italian and two Ghanaian artists, working across disciplines to explore and reinterpret traditional practices.

Their work will result in a children’s illustrated book, a digital archive of audio-visual materials, and a collective mural inspired by Ghanaian “talking drums” and oral storytelling.

The residency in Ghana will bring the artistic collective to the village of Tutu in the Eastern Region for a six-day cultural immersion. Activities will include workshops in schools and community spaces, creative labs focusing on folklore and performance and co-creation sessions to design future collaborations.

Immigration clears street children, guardians in massive operation at Abossey Okai

0

The Ghana Immigration Service has embarked on a special operation at Kaneshie and Abossey Okai, aimed at removing street children and their accompanying guardians from the streets.

The exercise, which took place in the early hours of Friday May 16, 2025 was led by immigration officers as part of broader efforts to address the growing presence of non-Ghanaian street dwellers, particularly minors, in major commercial hubs of Accra.

Numerous women with children—many of whom were reportedly thought to be foreign nationals—were rounded up by the immigration vehicles.

Officers were seen engaging with individuals before escorting them from the sidewalks and busy intersections where they often solicit alms from motorists and pedestrians.

Officials say the operation is part of a nationwide initiative to decongest the streets, enhance public safety, and curb child exploitation. It also aims to identify individuals residing in the country illegally and ensure proper immigration procedures are followed.

Dr. Ernestina Tetteh, Convener of the Coalition for Street-Connected Children Organisation (CSCCO), on May 8, 2025, raised serious concerns over what she describes as the growing and increasingly organised problem of child streetism in Ghana—particularly involving children from neighbouring countries.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show Dr. Tetteh noted that the number of street-connected children is on the rise, with many reportedly arriving from countries such as Chad and Niger.

“Statistics are hard to come by; we only know that the numbers are growing by the day. They usually come from Chad, Niger. This has been with us since I was a child, what we used to call ‘salaka’. But the issue has become worse than before,” she said.

She warned that some of these children may be part of a larger, coordinated network.

Davido credits Bright Chimezie’s ‘because of English’ as inspiration for new song ‘With You’

0

Nigerian Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has shown appreciation to legendary highlife maestro Bright Chimezie, crediting his timeless track ‘Because of English’ as the inspiration behind his new song “With You” featuring Omah Lay.

In a video call that quickly circulated on social media, Davido was seen in a video call with Chimezie. With visible admiration, he told the veteran that his decades-old classic planted the creative seed for “With You”, a standout track from his fifth studio album.

“The latest hit I just did with Omah Lay, I used inspiration from your song, ‘Because of English,’” Davido told the highlife icon during the call. Chimezie responded with interest, to which Davido added, “I will tell them to play it for you. It’s trending everywhere, the whole world.”

Reacting in a video posted on his Instagram page on Thursday, the music legend Bright Chimezie praised Davido and Omah Lay for their hit single ‘With You’, which samples his iconic track ‘Because of English’.

In the video, Chimezie was seen dancing joyfully to the song while applauding the artists for creatively drawing inspiration from his classic.

“You can see I am vibing to the song already. It’s a beautiful piece of work, very wonderful. I appreciate the fact that you said you picked the inspiration from this song I recorded many years ago; I appreciate you for that,” he said

Davido, in turn, replied with deep respect, switching to the Igbo language to honour the icon:

He wrote, “Ihe di ka gi akokwala m. Chief Sir Bright Chimezie, Ezigbote Onye Egwu,” meaning, “People like you inspire me. Chief Sir Bright Chimezie, a true music legend.”

“With You”, produced by the talented beatmaker Tempoe, fuses the lush groove of highlife with modern Afrobeats and a sprinkle of funk, a sound that echoes Nigeria’s 70s and 80s musical golden age, where artists like Chimezie laid the foundation.

Their respective journeys offer insight into how dedication and service can shape the country’s governance and institutional growth.

Cecilia Dapaah: A Seasoned Stateswoman

Notwithstanding, a few recalcitrant ones have abandoned its use and continue to crisscross the road, including ‘Okada’ riders, in the process posing not only danger to themselves but also to drivers who sometimes have to swerve in order to avoid knocking them down.

Observers said some pedestrians prioritise convenience over caution, choosing to cross the four-lane highway rather than climb the bridge.

Built in response to years of public agitation over frequent pedestrian accidents, the footbridge is intended to provide a safer crossing alternative for residents.

Residents and drivers have expressed alarm over some people not using the footbridge, warning that it undermines the purpose of the footbridge and endangers lives.

In an interview with The Ghanaian Times, Madam Ayishatu Abubakari cited her physical conditions such as knee problems that made it difficult to climb the footbridge.

“I cannot use the footbridge because of my knee that is why I prefer to cross the highway, even though it is dangerous and risky,” she stated.

Other pedestrians, despite facing no physical limitations, appear to disregard the safety risks entirely.

The Accra-Kasoa highway is known for its high-speed traffic, making pedestrian crossings particularly hazardous.

The underutilisation of the structure has triggered calls from residents and motorists for intensified public education campaigns and stricter enforcement of traffic regulations.

“We have seen too many accidents on this stretch,” said Kojo Ntiamoah, a commercial driver.

He stressed that, “if people won’t use the bridge, then the police must arrest and fine them. That’s the only way they’ll learn.”

The Tetegu footbridge was constructed by the Dutch Government in collaboration with the Ministry of Roads and Highways.

It is part of a broader initiative to address pedestrian safety concerns, following the removal of a traffic light at the location, which was said to have caused congestion.

The investment in the footbridge is expected to significantly reduce pedestrian knock downs.

Local authorities are now being urged to not only enforce usage but also explore ways to make the bridge more accessible for the elderly and physically challenged, including installing ramps or elevators where feasible.

Ghana Water Company in GH¢1 billion debt to ECG – Energy minister reveals

0

Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor

Energy and Green Transition Minister John Abdulai Jinapor has disclosed that Ghana Water Limited has failed to pay the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) for power consumed over the past seven months, resulting in an accumulated debt of approximately GH₵1 billion.

This revelation was made during a meeting with Parliament’s Energy Committee and key stakeholders in the power sector, where the Minister directed ECG to urgently recover the outstanding amount to sustain operations amid growing financial stress in the sector.

“Ghana Water hasn’t paid even GH₵1 for seven months, and it has compounded to GH₵1 billion. The power sector will not be stable if such debts continue. The private sector or ordinary citizens alone cannot shoulder this burden,” Jinapor stated.

He made these comments while responding to complaints from Ghana Water Limited about erratic electricity supply affecting water distribution.

In a related development, the Minister revealed that Karpower, one of Ghana’s key Independent Power Producers (IPPs), has issued a notice of shutdown effective May 18, citing over $400 million in unpaid government debt.

“Karpower has just sent us a letter that by the 18th, they will shut down the plant because we owe them more than $400 million. In total, we owe IPPs about $1.7 billion,” Jinapor added.

These revelations come as Ghana’s energy sector grapples with a deepening liquidity crisis, exacerbated by underreported revenues, ballooning government arrears, and delays in implementing cost-reflective tariffs.

The minister stressed the urgency of improving revenue recovery, warning that failure to act would further destabilize power generation and supply nationwide.

Let the cedi appreciation affect the lives of the people – Bekwai MP tells government

The Member of Parliament for Bekwai, Ralph Poku-Adusei The Member of Parliament for Bekwai, Ralph Poku-Adusei

The Member of Parliament for Bekwai, Ralph Poku-Adusei, has called on the government to ensure that the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi has a direct and positive impact on the lives of ordinary citizens.

His comments come amid growing public concern over the soaring cost of food and essential goods across the country.

Speaking on Accra-based Asaase Radio, the MP said: “Let the cedi appreciation affect the lives of the people. Today, as we speak, food is the most expensive thing in Ghana.

“One meal of fufu can cost you someone’s salary. The NDC should not only take credit for the cedi’s appreciation but must also ensure that these gains are reflected in the prices of food and other necessities.”

In recent weeks, the cedi has shown notable strength against major trading currencies, especially the US dollar.

The local currency, which had experienced sharp depreciation earlier in the year, has recovered significantly.

This resurgence has been largely attributed to a combination of increased foreign exchange inflows, improved investor confidence, and tighter monetary controls implemented by the Bank of Ghana.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC), currently in government, has touted the cedi’s performance as a testament to the effectiveness of its fiscal policies. Finance officials have described the currency’s rally as evidence that the economy is on a path to recovery.

However, Poku-Adusei argues that the real measure of economic progress lies not just in the strength of the currency, but in how that strength translates into tangible relief for citizens.

GoldBod dismisses ties with SML

0

The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has firmly dismissed reports linking it to Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Ltd. (SML), stating that it has no dealings, contract, partnership, or relationship whatsoever with the company.

Describing the claims as “completely false,” the Board urged the public to treat such reports with the utmost contempt.

In a statement issued on Thursday, 15 May 2024, GoldBod emphasised its commitment to transparency and responsible governance in Ghana’s gold sector. It also warned against attempts to mislead the public through misinformation.

This clarification comes amid broader confusion surrounding the role of SML in Ghana’s extractive industries.

In a separate but related development, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has also firmly denied reports suggesting that SML has been authorised to resume or expand its revenue assurance role in the upstream petroleum and solid minerals sectors.

According to a press release from the GRA’s Communication and Public Affairs Department, media publications on Wednesday, 14 May 2025—including reports in the Business and Financial Times and Graphic Online — incorrectly stated that SML had launched an expanded oversight mandate.

The GRA clarified that no such directive has been issued. It reiterated that SML’s operations in both the petroleum and solid minerals sectors remain suspended—a decision enacted in April 2024 and still in effect, pending further review.

“GRA has not instructed SML to activate or resume operations under the 2023 Consolidation of Revenue Assurance Services Contract covering those sectors,” the statement read.

Both agencies, GoldBod and the GRA, reaffirmed their dedication to upholding transparency, integrity, and the protection of national interests in the management of Ghana’s natural resource revenues.

Ghanaian entertainer and NPP member Fred Kyei Mensah has openly praised former President John Dramani Mahama for his support of the creative arts sector. Speaking in response to the launch of the Black Star Experience, Fred stated he no longer cares about criticism from his party and will continue to honor Mahama for his compassion toward aging artists.

“Mahama deserves praise for his empathy and support. I don’t care what others think. Whether politically motivated or not, he does it sincerely and from the heart,” he said.

He recalled being sent in 2017 by then-Minister Abla Dzifa Gomashie to visit the late actor Super OD, who asked him to thank Mahama for his kindness. Mahama, he noted, had supported many industry veterans including AB Crentsil, Grace Nortey, Paa George, Paapa Yankson, and others.

At the launch of the Black Star Experience, Mahama was joined by industry figures like Rex Omar, Abeiku Santana, KOD, and Dzifa Gomashie. Fred applauded the initiative as a boost to Ghana’s creative sector and urged recognition for legends like Agya Koo Nimo.

He concluded by calling on Ghanaians to commend leaders who uplift others, adding, “My 40 years in the industry won’t be sacrificed for politics. The arts deserve better.”

Stakeholders warn of risks to Ghana’s cocoa exports without scaled-up investment

0

Ghana’s cocoa sector may face major foreign exchange setbacks unless swift investments are made to boost large-scale production.

That’s the caution from the Netherlands Ambassador to Ghana, Jeroen Verheul, who has called for an urgent reset of the country’s cocoa industry.

He warns that Ghana risks losing its global competitiveness to emerging producers like Ecuador and Brazil if long-standing structural issues in the sector are not urgently addressed.

The Dutch envoy was speaking to Channel One Business on the sidelines of a high-level public-private dialogue in Accra on Ghana’s readiness for the EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive.

The Ambassador stressed that compliance with EU sustainability directives and increased productivity through large-scale farming will be key to maintaining Ghana’s market share and safeguarding crucial forex earnings.

For him, any decline in Ghana’s global competitiveness could trigger broader macroeconomic consequences.

“If production is going down as it is going down right now, then that means there is less export of cocoa and less foreign exchange earned by farmers and less foreign exchange earned by the economy.

“So it’s a threat to the economy if production if going down so there is an imperative for the Ghana economy to maintain the cocoa sector, to invest in it, to make it more productive to make it more competitive,” Jeroen Verheul said.

As an intervention, the International Trade Centre (ITC) is also taking proactive steps to help Ghana align its cocoa production with international standards to avoid future market rejections.

Larry Attipoe National Coordinator for the Centre’s value chain initiatives in Ghana said this is expected to strengthen Ghana’s cocoa value chain and ensure long-term export viability.

“We bring information. What does it take you to produce to meet international demands [and] meet all the specifications,” he mentioned.

Fuel prices to see biggest drop of 8% today May 16

0

Prices of the petroleum products are set to witness the biggest drop at the pumps today May 16, 2025.

This is according to the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC) Pricing Outlook for the second pricing window for the month of May 2025.

Price quotes for various products

According to the pricing guidelines for the window, petrol is expected to go down between 6.7 percent and 8.8 percent per liter from today.

By this, a litre could be sold for GH₵13.27 or even lower.

Diesel on the other hand should be reduced by 4 percent or 6 percent per litre.

This could result in a litre going for GH₵ 14.40 or even lower.

Liquefied Petroleum Gas is likely to sell for GH₵16 per kilogram if the various Oil Marketing Companies adjust their prices by 5.3 percent.

 Reasons for the reduction

The chamber has attributed the reason for the sharp drop in prices to the cedi’s record appreciation against the U.S dollar.

The chamber in its report notes that “between May 1 and May 15, 2025, the Ghanaian cedi appreciated significantly against the US dollar, strengthening from GHS14.27 to GHS12.45, a gain of approximately 12.8%”.

Crude oil prices and prices of finished petroleum products have also witnessed some significant decline during the period under review.

Fuel prices have witnessed a downward trend for the 5 consecutive window.

Petrol prices fell marginally by 0.34%, LPG dropped by 2.70%, while gasoil recorded the highest decline among the products, falling by 3.54%.

Oil Marketing Companies responding

Market leader GOIL has announced a reduction in prices of the various products at its service stations across the country.

Petrol is going for GH₵13.32 per litre. Diesel is selling at GH₵13.91.

GOIL’s adjustment, shows the 7th consecutive time the company has reduced prices since February 2025.

However, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has argued that the reductions are not enough to reduce transport fares.

Ghana could rake in over $30m from chilli pepper exports in three years – GIRSAL

0

Ghana Incentive-Based Risk-Sharing System for Agricultural Lending Project (GIRSAL) has disclosed that the export of Chilli pepper from Ghana will within the next three years accrue over $30 million in revenue for the government.

This according to the project is because of an initiative to train farmers to produce 30 hectares of Chilli peppers for export.

The farmers are expected to be trained on meeting the quality standards of export purposes.

Addressing the press, Chief Operating officer of GIRSAL, Samuel Yeboah indicated that the first phase will give the country $3 million in revenue.

“These farmers who are taking part in this project in the first place will have their capacities built. They will learn how to produce chilies under safe conditions more efficiently to be able to develop and scale up their productions to the highest level.

“This project, the first phase alone will be bringing in about $3 million into the country. We hope that in the next three years, we should be getting over $20-30 million from chili exports alone into the country. This aligns with the government’s accelerated export development agenda. We are going to work in partnership with the government agencies to ensure that we achieve this aim,” he said.

Adom Kyei Duah Warns Diana Asamoah, Threatens Legal Action Over Defamation

Adom Kyei Duah has issued a fiery warning to gospel musician Diana Asamoah, accusing her of defamation and threatening legal action. The controversy erupted after Adom Kyei Duah claimed that Diana Asamoah’s past declarations of holiness were nothing more than a strategy to secure food and shelter, rather than genuine spiritual devotion.

According to Adom Kyei Duah, Diana Asamoah’s recent criticisms of him are fueled by desperation rather than righteousness. “She was never holy—she was just hungry,” he allegedly stated, suggesting that her religious stance was merely a survival tactic. His remarks have sparked heated debates among fans and followers, with some defending Diana Asamoah while others question past statements.

Beyond the verbal jabs, Adom Kyei Duah has also warned Diana Asamoah against tarnishing his reputation, promising to take legal action if she continues to defame him. “She should watch out—I will change her level,” he reportedly declared, leaving many wondering whether this feud will escalate into a full-blown court battle.

Social media has erupted with reactions, with some users mocking the situation while others are calling for peace between the two public figures. Some fans of Diana Asamoah have fired back, arguing that her past struggles do not diminish her spiritual journey, while others believe Adom Kyei Duah’s comments were unnecessarily harsh.

Meanwhile, Diana Asamoah has yet to respond publicly to the accusations, but sources close to her suggest she is preparing a strong rebuttal. Some speculate that she may address the issue in her next sermon or release a statement clarifying her stance.

As tensions rise, many are eager to see whether this feud will escalate further or if both parties will find a way to settle their differences. One thing is certain—this battle between faith and reputation is far from over.

Here’s the Full List of Constituencies

0

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is facing a major setback after Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC) rejected parliamentary results from nine constituencies where the party claimed victory. The EC’s decision, based on allegations of coercion and procedural breaches, could result in the NDC losing key parliamentary seats.

On December 19, EC Chairperson Jean Mensa announced that results from the following constituencies would not be accepted, as the declarations were made under duress:

* Nsawam-Adoagyiri

* Ahafo Ano South West

* Ahafo Ano North

* Obuasi East

* Okaikwei Central

* Ablekuma North

* Tema Central

* Techiman South

* Dome-Kwabenya

Mensa emphasized that any results announced under threats or intimidation are deemed invalid. “Our officials were coerced, and we cannot uphold results declared under such circumstances,” she stated.

She appealed to outgoing President Akufo-Addo and incoming President John Mahama to help guarantee the safety of EC personnel, enabling the commission to complete its electoral duties without interference.

Mensa also condemned the disruption of vote counting on December 7, blaming political party supporters for storming EC centers, damaging equipment, and halting the tallying process. According to her, some staff were pressured into announcing results without fully counting votes, which the EC finds unacceptable.

She pointed to irregularities in constituencies like Ablekuma North and Okaikwei Central, where results were announced despite 62 and 31 polling stations, respectively, not being counted. The EC reiterated its stance that only results obtained through proper procedures and without intimidation will be recognized.

Anklets or Ashawo? The Truth About Ladies Who Wear Leg Beads

0

In Ghana and many parts of Africa, leg beads—commonly referred to as waist beads when worn around the hips and anklets when worn around the ankle—have long held cultural, spiritual, and aesthetic significance. Yet in recent years, a growing number of people have come to associate these beautiful accessories with negative stereotypes, especially towards women. But is it fashion or “ashawo”? Let’s explore the facts and break down the misconceptions.

Cultural Origins and Significance

Leg beads have been worn by African women for centuries. Among the Ga, Ewe, and Ashanti ethnic groups, these beads are symbols of femininity, fertility, and cultural identity. Traditionally, they were used to celebrate milestones like puberty, marriage, or childbirth.

In some tribes, leg or waist beads also served as charms believed to possess spiritual or protective powers. They were sometimes infused with herbs and oils for spiritual cleansing or attraction.

Modern Fashion and Expression

Today, many young women wear leg beads simply as a form of fashion and self-expression. Whether visible or hidden under clothing, beads are worn with pride. They complement outfits, enhance body confidence, and often form part of afrocentric or modern Ghanaian fashion styles.

Social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram have contributed to a resurgence in bead culture, with many influencers and fashionistas showcasing beads as stylish and trendy.

Stereotypes and Misconceptions

Despite the rich cultural heritage, some sections of society wrongly associate leg or waist beads with promiscuity. This stereotype likely stems from their subtle sensuality and the way they accentuate the body—especially when worn visibly.

The term “ashawo” (a derogatory word for sex workers) is unfairly attached to women who wear leg beads, particularly in urban settings. But such labeling is not only misleading but also rooted in ignorance and moral policing.

What It Really Means When a Woman Wears Leg Beads

Here are a few facts to clarify the perception:

It is not an invitation: Wearing leg beads is not a signal of promiscuity or sexual availability.

It is often personal: Many women wear them for spiritual, cultural, or intimate reasons known only to them.

It is a form of body appreciation: Leg beads help many women feel confident, sexy, and empowered in their own skin.

It is part of heritage: For some women, wearing beads is a way of preserving their cultural identity.

Conclusion

The idea that wearing leg beads makes a woman an “ashawo” is outdated and disrespectful. Like any other fashion accessory, leg beads should be seen for what they are—beautiful, meaningful, and deeply personal. It’s time society moves beyond shallow judgments and embraces the true value of African traditions.

Women deserve the freedom to express themselves without fear of labeling. After all, fashion is a language—and leg beads speak boldly of culture, pride, and femininity.

Tensions Flare as Circle Traders Clash with AMA Task Force Over Eviction Exercise

0

A clash erupted at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra on Tuesday as traders operating along the pavements fiercely resisted an attempted eviction exercise by a task force from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA). The task force, deployed to clear vendors allegedly obstructing pedestrian movement, met stiff opposition from the traders, many of whom have operated in the area for years.

Eyewitnesses say the scene quickly turned chaotic as AMA officials began seizing items and dismantling stalls. A viral video circulating on social media captures a distressed woman screaming that she has children to care for, pleading with the authorities not to take away her only source of livelihood. Others joined her, begging the task force to show compassion and allow them to continue their trade.

This latest confrontation has triggered a wave of reactions from Ghanaians online, with opinions sharply divided. One user commented, “There’s enough space on the pavement for both traders and pedestrians, just educate them to leave space for pedestrians.” Another argued, “Pavement is not meant for trading, laws must be enforced.”

Some also questioned the consistency and integrity of the enforcement process. “You take money from them, and now you want to get rid of them?” one user wrote, suggesting that some of the traders may have paid unofficial fees to remain at their spots. Another comment read, “If you have children so you have to sell in the middle of the road? Lmao.”

While the AMA maintains that its actions are part of a broader effort to decongest the city and improve sanitation, many of the affected traders insist they have nowhere else to go. With unemployment and economic hardship still prevalent, hawking remains a means of survival for many urban dwellers.

Urban development experts have long warned of the delicate balance between law enforcement and socioeconomic realities. The question remains whether sustainable alternatives, such as designated market spaces and proper engagement with traders, are being sufficiently explored before forceful evictions take place.

‘Side chick’ demands GH₵3 million compensation after finding out her boss is married, drags him to live TV show

0

A young woman from Tanoso in the Ashanti Region, identified as Yaa Dede, has confronting her former boss and lover, Sam Darko, on live television, demanding a staggering 30 billion old cedis (equivalent to GH₵3 million) in compensation for what she describes as emotional deception and betrayal.

Russian hacker claims UK has ‘no idea’ how to launch cyber attack on Putin’s country

Russian hacker and tech expert Andrei Masalovich, from YouTube channel CyberDedas, quashe claims that the United Kingdom could launch a cyebr attack on Russia at some point

Russia is known for its cyber criminal activity

A top Russian hacker has claimed that the UK has “no idea” how to launch a cyber attack on Russia. The comments come days after it was revealed that Keir Starmer was apparently looking at ways to attack Vladimir Putin’s country other than on the battlefield – with a cyber attack said to be top of the list.

However, infamous Russian hacker and tech expert Andrei Masalovich, from YouTube channel CyberDed, has claimed that the UK wouldn’t be very successful if it did attempt one because of one major issue.

Speaking to Putin’s favourite news website, Kremlin-backed Moskovskij Komsomolets, Masalovich said: “They had never had experience with such operations, and their views on cyber warfare were very broad.

“The British were more concerned with simple ‘scares’ about Russian hackers, but they did not conduct or develop real large-scale cyber attacks that could disable cities.

“It will be an information war. They are already doing it. One important rule: in an information war, you need to be able to grab attention. If there is some bright or sensational news, you should not always believe it right away, it is important to understand what exactly they want to show with it.

“Sometimes the goal is to distract attention from more important problems. All the cries of Britain about cyber warfare may also be an attempt to distract attention or manipulate public opinion.

“There is money and certain interests behind it. Perhaps MI6 may be preparing something more serious or launching a “shock” dose of fakes into cyberspace.”

Starmer is looking at new ways to attack Russia
Starmer is looking at new ways to attack Russia

Earlier this year, the UK government tried to sanction Russia’s cybercrime network by targeting cyber entity ZSERVERS, which has been known to use ransomware to attack countries.

The illicit supply chain protects, supports and conceals the operations of some of the world’s most ruthless ransomware gangs.

Foreign Secretary David Lammy said: “Putin has built a corrupt mafia state driven by greed and ruthlessness. It is no surprise that the most unscrupulous extortionists and cyber-criminals run rampant from within his borders.

“This government will continue to work with partners to constrain the Kremlin and the impact of Russia’s lawless cyber underworld. We must counter their actions at every opportunity to safeguard the UK’s national security and deliver on our Plan for Change.”

However, going by Masalovich’s words, it doesn’t appear as if the sanctions have had much of an impact . . .

Family Devastated by 11-Year-Old Niece’s Pregnancy After Rape

0

The family of an 11-year-old girl from Boksburg who tragically became pregnant after being raped is grappling with immense pain and disbelief. The emotional turmoil was palpable outside the Boksburg Magistrates Court on Wednesday, where the man accused of perpetrating this heinous crime was scheduled to apply for bail.

However, due to the severe nature of the alleged offense, the Criminal Procedures Act mandates that the suspect must demonstrate exceptional circumstances to be considered for release on bail. This legal provision underscores the gravity with which the justice system views such cases, particularly those involving the sexual abuse of a minor.

Tears welled in the eyes of the aunt of the young girl, who now faces the unimaginable reality of becoming a mother at the tender age of eleven. The aunt’s raw emotion reflected the profound shock and sorrow that has engulfed the entire family as they attempt to come to terms with this devastating situation.

Standing outside the courthouse, the emotional aunt shared the family’s profound distress. “It left us speechless with the 11-year-old child, [who] doesn’t know anything,” she lamented, highlighting the innocent incomprehension of the young victim.

The aunt poignantly illustrated the child’s lack of understanding of her condition, stating, “Even if you tell this child that you have a baby in your stomach, this child can’t believe. She’s going to ask you: ‘What is pregnancy, mommy? You are saying that I’m pregnant. What is that?'” These heartbreaking words underscore the sheer tragedy of a childhood innocence shattered by a brutal act of violence.

The aunt further expressed the family’s utter unpreparedness for such a horrific event. “We never knew that this is coming to the family and now we know how it feels,” she said, conveying the profound and unwelcome understanding of such pain that has now been forced upon them.

The family’s statement paints a picture of a loving unit suddenly confronted with an unimaginable crisis, struggling to support a child who is herself a victim in the most profound way.

Adding to the family’s ordeal, the suspect’s bail application, which was scheduled for Wednesday, has now been postponed to Friday.

This delay prolongs the uncertainty and anxiety for the family as they await the court’s decision on whether the accused will be released back into the community while the legal proceedings unfold. The postponement underscores the complexities involved in such sensitive and high-stakes cases, even as the family yearns for swift justice and a sense of security for their young niece.

The community in Boksburg, and indeed the nation, will likely be watching closely as this tragic case progresses through the courts, highlighting the urgent need to protect vulnerable children and hold perpetrators of such crimes accountable to the fullest extent of the law.

National Security raid former GIHOC MD’s home for allegedly purchasing $100k state vehicle for GH¢4,943

National security operatives conducted an early-morning operation at the residence of former GIHOC Distilleries Managing Director, Maxwell Kofi Jumah, in an attempt to recover state-owned vehicles reportedly in his possession.

According to a news report filed by citinewsroom.com on May 15, 2025, the raid occurred at approximately 5:00 am on Thursday, May 15, 2025.

However, the report detailed that, Jumah, a former appointee under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, was not present at the time.

According to further details, the former GIHOC MD is under investigation for alleged financial impropriety during his tenure, including questionable acquisition of state vehicles and mismanagement of company assets.

A letter dated August 1, 2019, from the Board of Directors of GIHOC approved Jumah’s purchase of a Genesis G90 saloon car (registration number GE 86 22-19), in accordance with his Conditions of Service as Managing Director.

Initially valued at over $100,000, the vehicle was sold to him at a significantly reduced price of GH¢ 4,943.11, just 5% of its worth, according to documents signed by the company’s Secretary and Head of Administration, Apea Twumasi-Ankrah.

Further investigations revealed that an independent valuation by the State Transport Corporation had placed the car’s value at GH¢98,862.00. The appraisal, conducted by valuation expert Daniel K Orhin, confirmed the vehicle’s market worth.

Additionally, Jumah is being scrutinized for allegedly retaining two other official vehicles, including an Audi valued at over $60,000, without formal approval from the Board.

Reports indicate that he later instructed security personnel to return the vehicles, one of which had been in his son’s possession. So far, one of the cars has been successfully retrieved and transported back to Accra.

Beyond vehicle-related allegations, concerns have also surfaced regarding financial irregularities at GIHOC under his leadership.

Jumah is accused of inflating staff numbers, placing undue financial strain on the company.

Reports suggest he authorised the sale of company properties in Tema, valued at over $700,000, without the necessary board approvals.

NSA removes 2,000 ghost names, saves GH¢1 million

Felix Gyamfi, Director-General of the National Service Authority Felix Gyamfi, Director-General of the National Service Authority

More than 2,000 ghost names have been successfully removed from the National Service Authority’s (NSA) payroll, a move anticipated to save the state over GH¢1 million.

Felix Gyamfi, Director-General of the NSA, stated that the cleanup operation is part of ongoing efforts to enhance transparency and eliminate fraud within the system.

According to him, to prevent duplication and unauthorized entries, the Controller and Accountant General’s Department will now have access to service personnel data for cross-verification.

“If you’re already on another payroll — whether as a police officer, immigration officer, or army officer — and you’re doing national service just to meet the requirement, do not submit your allowance form this month,” Gyamfi warned. “We are now working closely with the NIB and other security agencies, and anyone who attempts to defraud the system will be arrested,” he said, as quoted by CitiNewsroom.com.

Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine announced on April 30 that former National Service Authority (NSA) directors implicated in the ghost names scandal will be formally charged in the first week of May 2025.

This development follows a directive from President John Dramani Mahama, who ordered a comprehensive investigation into the 81,885 potential ghost names discovered on the NSA payroll.

Presidential Spokesperson and Minister for Government Communications Felix Kwakye Ofosu stated that the anomaly was uncovered during a national headcount of active national service members.

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson commissioned the audit as part of efforts to reconcile and settle outstanding service allowance arrears dating back to August 2024. The issue first came to public attention through an investigative report by The Fourth Estate in November 2024.

Osei Assibey Antwi, former Executive Director of the NSA, was questioned by the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) on March 20 over his suspected involvement in the payroll fraud. He appeared for questioning accompanied by his lawyers.

0

Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor

The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has announced that all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) will now be required to make budgetary allocations to cover their electricity consumption.

He made this statement during a meeting between the Energy Committee and power sector agencies on Thursday, May 15, 2025.

The minister emphasized the need for MDAs to take responsibility for their electricity bills.

“All MDAs are required to pay their electricity bills. They must include this in their budgets. This directive applies to the health sector, education, security agencies, and even the presidency. However, in the health sector, only laboratories, theatres, and wards will be exempted.

“In the education sector, dormitories and restaurants are excluded; only lecture halls are covered. We have categorized these areas, and once Parliament approves the classifications, we will publish them,” he stated.

Red Star Belgrade considering re-signing Osman Bukari

Ghanaian winger Osman Bukari (L) Ghanaian winger Osman Bukari (L)

Red Star Belgrade are reportedly exploring the possibility of re-signing Ghanaian winger Osman Bukari in 2025.

The 26-year-old left the Serbian champions for Major League Soccer side Austin FC last summer in a deal worth €7 million, penning a contract that runs until the end of 2027.

However, Bukari has struggled to replicate his impressive European form in the United States, managing just two goals and three assists in 24 matches for the Texas-based outfit.

His relatively modest output has sparked speculation that Austin may be open to parting ways with the Ghana international, creating an opening for a potential return to Belgrade.

Bukari previously enjoyed a prolific spell at Crvena zvezda, where he registered 25 goals and 20 assists in 78 appearances across all competitions.

He initially joined the Serbian club from Belgian side Gent in July 2022 for a transfer fee of €3 million.

With Crvena zvezda reportedly keen to bolster their attack for next season, Bukari’s past success at the club makes him an attractive target as they aim to strengthen their squad for both domestic and European campaigns.
