RETIRED GHANAIAN boxer, Barimah Kamoko, popularly known as Bukom Banku, has advised young fighters who aspire to emulate his fighting abilities to avoid social vices such as smoking, drinking alcoholic beverages, and womanizing.

In an interview with Citi Sport, Bukuom Banku emphasized the importance of living healthy and disciplined in sports. He stated, “ If you are a boxer, you have to be disciplined. No alcohol, no womanizing, no smoking if you want to fight like me or Azumah Nelson, Ike Quartey, Joshua Clottey, and others who are highly regarded.”

Women’s Health to Wealth donates 48 special wheelchairs to Ashanti Education Directorate

0

Women’s Health to Wealth, a non-governmental organisation operating in the Ashanti and Bono regions, has donated 48 P.E.T. small carts, specially designed wheelchairs, to the Ashanti Regional Education Directorate.

The donation aims to support children with mobility challenges, enabling them to pursue their education with dignity and respect.

This initiative forms part of the organisation’s efforts to improve the health and well-being of students with physical and mobility needs and to increase their enrollment in schools across the Ashanti Region.

In an interview during the donation on Monday June 16, the founder and executive director of Women’s Health to Wealth, Nana Abenaa Akuamoa-Boateng, emphasised that though the organisation primarily focuses on the health and well-being of women and girls, it also takes a keen interest in supporting children with mobility challenges.

She explained that providing equipment like the P.E.T. carts helps address one of their major barriers, movement, thereby facilitating school attendance and promoting a dignified life for these children as they enjoy their right to education.

“One of the issues we have observed, aside from our main focus on women and girls, is that disadvantaged children, especially those with physical disabilities, face significant difficulties in getting to and staying in school, largely because most of our schools are not disability-friendly,” she noted.

She further stated, “While there have been numerous initiatives by the government and organisations like UNICEF to make schools more inclusive, a major challenge remains for children who are unable to walk or have difficulty getting to school. Many of them are forced to crawl, which is not a dignified way of treating human beings. Unfortunately, children can be insensitive and may laugh at or tease these students, which often results in them dropping out of school due to emotional distress. Others, after enduring such unfriendly conditions for a while, simply give up and never return.”

Nana Abena Akuamoa-Boateng added, “We believe that being physically disabled does not mean being mentally disabled, and these children deserve all the support they need. We also extend our assistance to women with mobility challenges, so they can carry out income-generating activities rather than resort to begging.”

Family members and teachers of one of the beneficiaries, Sulemana Mohammed, a seven-year-old KG1 pupil at Asempanaye D/A Primary School in the Offinso North District, shared how he used to crawl to school. They described the mobility challenges he faced since his enrollment and expressed excitement about the specially designed wheelchair, which they believe will boost his confidence and increase his enthusiasm for learning.

The Ashanti Regional Education Director, Dr. William Kwame Amankrah Appiah, who received the items on behalf of the Directorate, commended the NGO for its generous gesture. He expressed confidence that the intervention would help increase the enrollment of students with mobility challenges and foster a greater sense of belonging in schools.

So far, Women’s Health to Wealth has supported over 200 children with mobility aids and provided wheelchairs to about 300 women with movement challenges. The organization has also made significant contributions to improving girls’ education and health, creating a safe and empowering environment for women and girls in the region.

‘I was falsely accused of stabbing someone’

Bukom Banku addresses issues of his arrest Bukom Banku addresses issues of his arrest

Renowned Ghanaian boxer cum musician, Bukom Banku, has addressed a recent incident in which he was falsely accused of stabbing someone, a claim that led to embarrassment and his brief arrest.

In a video making rounds on X on June 16, 2025, he explained that he was wrongfully accused of striking someone with a bottle during a confrontation, which led to police involvement.

Narrating the incident, he added, “It was later revealed that the people who accused me of stabbing someone had mistaken me for someone else.”

According to him, those responsible for the false accusation later came to apologise and asked for his forgiveness.

Bukum Banku concluded by saying, “I leave everything to God.”

Background

Braimah Kamoko, popularly known as Bukom Banku, found himself at the centre of a legal controversy in November 2022, when he and his son, Mustapha, were accused of violently assaulting a footballer named Ishmael Neequaye during a dispute in Bukom.

According to reports, the altercation allegedly involved Mustapha stabbing the complainant with a bottle that was purportedly handed to him by Bukom Banku.

After spending several weeks on remand and making multiple court appearances, the case was eventually withdrawn in April 2023, following the complainant’s decision to drop the charges.

With the case dismissed, Bukom Banku’s innocence was effectively restored.

Anthony Joshua spotted with Amir Khan years after being accused of sleeping with his wife

Amir Khan and Anthony Joshua seem to have buried the hatchet after the former accused the British heavyweight of having an affair with his wife.

Joshua, who has been enjoying a break from the ring following elbow surgery, recently embarked on luxury trips to Oman, Dubai and Saudi Arabia. The 35 year old Brit was given a hero’s welcome in Ghana, where he was mobbed by fans upon arrival.

The ex-two-time heavyweight world champion flew out to Ghana to attend Khan’s inaugural boxing show as a promoter. Khan hopes this event will act as a springboard for future global promotions.

In the main event, Andrew Tabiti triumphed over Jacob Dickson.

However, the highlight of the event was seeing Joshua and Khan appearing quite friendly with each other, nearly a decade after Khan alleged on social media that Faryal Makhdoom had been unfaithful to him with Joshua, reports the Mirror.

Joshua refuted the allegations at the time, posting: “Bantz aside, I hope you guys can resolve your situation, or this is a hack as we have never even met! Plus, I like my women BBW (sic).”

Khan promptly informed his followers that the messages were not the work of a hacker. “Everything you saw on social media today is real,” he stated.

“Nothing’s been hacked. But yeah, what’s done is done. Everything I posted on social media today was true,” he added.

Khan and Makhdoom’s marriage hit a rocky patch after an 80-minute Twitter spat led to a brief separation, but love triumphed as they mended their relationship. Reflecting on the 2019 incident before his bout with Terence Crawford, Khan admitted to ESPN: “It was a made-up message. A lot of people were making all these fake messages saying that ‘Joshua messaged your wife and she messaged him back.'”.

He continued, “Then I posted it on social media and said, ‘This has happened and it’s true. And I’m calling it over. She’s no longer my wife.’ I did feel bad, I did feel stupid at the time but the damage was done. I made that mistake in tweeting something and putting it out. I was just digging a deeper and deeper hole. I remember I went to see Faryal. I apologised. I said, ‘Look, I don’t know what went through my head.’ And I totally changed my ways, changed the way I am.”

Years later, Khan expressed regret for dragging Joshua into the drama during a chat with Gary Neville on The Overlap, saying, “I had the problem with Anthony Joshua, which I feel awful for, because at the end of the day. But I put him in the firing line for no reason,” and lamented, “I mean, he was a friend of mine. Since then, we’ve never spoken. So I lost a good friend through that as well.”

Now, there are signs of thawing relations between Khan and Joshua, who hasn’t stepped into the ring since his defeat by Daniel Dubois last year. Eager to make a comeback, Joshua may face Dillian Whyte or Jared Anderson, as suggested by promoter Eddie Hearn.

When asked about Joshua’s future, he said: “For me, if I’m advising AJ, we’re back this year, we have two Tyson Fury fights, what else is there to do? ,

“Maybe fight a Daniel Dubois, but for me once AJ fights Tyson Fury, he’s kind of done it all. I’d love him to have another crack at Daniel Dubois and I’d love him to have another crack at Usyk but you just keep going on and on and on. In an ideal world, we’d like to fight in November/December and then have two Tyson Fury fights in 2026. It was gonna be Dillian Whyte, probably, but looks like he’s fighting Moses [Itauma]. Jared Anderson, Deontay Wilder, I don’t know.”

Exam denial ‘silly and criminal’, headmaster must be prosecuted

0

Member of Parliament for Kwabre East, Onyina-Akyeampong Akwasi Gyamfi, has condemned the reported detention of two Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates by their headmaster, describing the act as “absurd” and amounting to kidnapping.

The students, from Big Six Educational Complex in Meduma—a private school in the Kwabre East Municipality—were allegedly locked in a room on Monday, June 16, 2025, and prevented from writing their first paper, Mathematics, at Simms High School, the designated exam centre in Fawoade.

According to reports, the headmaster confined the candidates over unpaid school fees and their refusal to attend a school-organised camping session.

“It is absurd because this is their future. You cannot deny them the right to write exams for any reason,” the MP fumed.

“One is said to owe GH₵700 and the other refused to attend a camping programme. The circumstances surrounding this are silly. This is tantamount to kidnapping.”

Mr. Gyamfi also disclosed that a similar incident reportedly occurred at the same school last year. This time, however, he has taken a personal interest in ensuring accountability.

“I have sent a report to the crime officer. I want the person involved to be held accountable for this action,” he stated.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with calls for swift sanctions and better protection for students’ rights.

Postponed energy Levy must trigger comprehensive revenue review – Oppong Nkrumah urges gov’t

0

Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi and Ranking Member on the Economy and Development Committee of Parliament, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has called on the government to take advantage of the suspension on the implementation of the Energy Sector Levy to conduct a comprehensive review of the country’s fuel-related revenue streams.

Speaking on Citi Eyewitness News on Monday, June 16, he criticised the levy as “unnecessary” and urged the government not only to suspend it, but to permanently scrap it.

“What we are drawing attention to is not just the suspension of the levy, because that levy is unnecessary. We are also drawing attention to the fact that the government should take advantage of this window, which has suspended [the levy] even while we are calling for scrapping,” he said.

He further stressed that this temporary break should not be treated as a mere pause, but rather used to evaluate Ghana’s broader tax regime.

“Government should take advantage of this period not just to say we have halted it temporarily, but to do a substantive, comprehensive review of our revenue lines as a country, particularly the fuel levy.”

His comments follow a decision by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to postpone the implementation of Tariff Interpretation Order (TIO) No. 2025/004, which relates to the Energy Sector Levies (Amendment) Act, 2025 (Act 1141). The directive, which included a hike in the Energy Sector Shortfall and Debt Repayment Levy (ESSDRL) on selected petroleum products, was scheduled to take effect on June 16, 2025.

However, the rollout was deferred until further notice after the Finance Ministry intervened following consultations with stakeholders.

GRA Commissioner-General Anthony Kwasi Sarpong confirmed the suspension in a directive dated June 13, adding that a new implementation date will be announced later.

Retirement age of 70 for judges is fine – Justice Adjei

0

Supreme Court nominee, Justice Sir Dennis Adjei, says Ghana’s mandatory retirement age of 70 for judges should not be extended, citing the intense workload on the bench and its toll on the health of justices.

Speaking during his vetting by the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday, June 17, Justice Adjei dismissed calls for constitutional amendments to increase the retirement age for Supreme Court justices.

“In Ghana, the 70 is okay, because people go home [after retirement] and within two years, they die because of the volume of work that we do,” he stated.

Responding to a question on why Ghana should not emulate jurisdictions like the United States where federal judges serve for life, Justice Adjei clarified that the systems are fundamentally different.

He explained that in the U.S., judges can opt for a “senior judge status” from age 65, allowing them to reduce their caseloads significantly while still remaining on the bench.

“They have senior judge status… You may decide to sit either one-third or half of your volume of work. And if you become 80 or 90 [years], the number of cases you sit on is up to you,” he said.

“But just in 2009, the UK increased their retirement age to 75.”

Justice Adjei maintained that Ghana’s judicial workload is too demanding to justify an extension.

He noted that judges often endure heavy schedules that take a physical toll over the years, making timely retirement a matter of wellbeing.

Earlier during the vetting, Supreme Court nominee Justice Senyo Dzamefe made it clear that he does not support calls to review the retirement age for judges of the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal from 70 to 75.

Justice Dzamefe said he strongly believes the current retirement age of 70 should be maintained.

“I will not agree with sending the retirement ages of Supreme Court or Appeal Court judges to 75. No,” he said. “The retirement age as at now is 70. Superior court judges retire on their salaries.”

He explained that traditionally, age and experience were important factors in judicial work, but technology has changed that reality.

“Formally, you need to be advanced in age to get the experience and the exposure so that when you give judgment, it is respected. It is a solid judgment because you’re adding personal experience to the legal knowledge you have,” he said.

“But of late, technology has made it such that what you needed 60 or 70 years to know, technology can make it available to you very early,” he explained. “So personally, my opinion is to keep it at 70. That is my opinion, not 75.”

Family of NPP Chairman demands break from party work over health concerns

0

The family of Stephen Ayensu Ntim, National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has requested the former’s temporary withdrawal from all party duties due to health reasons and the urgent need for medical care and rest.

In a letter dated June 16, 2025, and addressed to the Chairman of the NPP Council of Elders, the family raised serious concerns about Mr. Ntim’s current condition, citing “cognitive dissonance and mental incapacitation.” They stressed that his continued participation in party activities poses a risk to his well-being and infringes on his personal rights.

Signed by family members including Kingsley Oteng (Family Head), Adelaide Ntim (MP), and other close relatives, the letter highlighted Mr. Ntim’s decades of service to the party, from his tenure as First National Deputy Chairman to his current leadership role.

Despite his unwavering dedication, the family stated, “Steve is not well at the moment,” and urged the party to excuse him from the upcoming NPP meeting scheduled for June 17 at the Alisa Hotel, which he was expected to chair.

“Common sense dictates that Steve, as a matter of urgency, be temporarily excused, not only from the rigours of active politics, but from intra-party activities in order to make way for needed peace and solace and for concentration on the ongoing required medical treatment process,” the letter read.

The family appealed to the NPP leadership to act compassionately and responsibly, urging them to recognise the seriousness of Mr. Ntim’s health challenges and prioritise his recovery before considering his return to party duties.

Stop using ‘Prof’, ‘Dr’ titles – GTEC directs 2 MPs and Kwame Adom-Frimpong of Internal Audit Agency

0

The campaign to sanitise the use of unearned academic titles in Ghana has been extended to the House of Parliament, where some members of Parliament have been cited for joining the increasing trend of individuals using those unearned titles.

As of Monday, June 16, 2025, two members of Parliament in the persons of Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, and Desmond DeGraft Paitoo, Member of Parliament for Gomoa East, all in the Central Region had received correspondence from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) asking them to refrain from using the honorary titles “Doctor” (Dr) as part of their names in any official or public communication.

According to GTEC, the use of such titles particularly where they lack academic validation, can be misleading and is inconsistent with the established academic protocols governing the conferment and use of academic distinction in Ghana.

It said the continuous use of such honorary titles, which was on the increase in recent times in Ghana is considered unethical and is in violation of several provisions of the Education Regulatory Bodies Act, 2020 (Act 1023) and other relevant statutes governing higher education in Ghana.

Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor – MP for Awutu Senya East

Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor – MP for Awutu Senya East and member of NPA Board

GTEC in a letter dated June 16 addressed to Naa Koryoo Okunor for example, who was recently appointed and sworn in as a member of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) Board requested her to cease the use of the “Doctor” title.

Additionally, GTEC has directed her to submit verifiable evidence that the title has been removed from all relevant platforms,  including but not limited to official documents, institutional profiles, websites, letterheads and any other public or professional representations.

“The Commission expects your full cooperation in this matter and looks forward to receiving confirmation of compliance at your earliest convenience.” the letter indicated.

Dominic DeGraft Paitoo – MP for Gomoa East

Dominic DeGraft Paitoo – MP for Gomoa East

For Dominic DeGraft Pailtoo, the MP for Gomoa East, GTEC in a letter dated June 3, 2025, directed him to stop using the “Doctor” title until he provided clarification on the awarding institution of the doctoral title; whether the degree was earned or honorary; when it was conferred and the process through which the title was conferred.

GTEC requested the Gomoa East MP to take full responsibility for this matter and immediately refrain from using the honorary title “Doctor” (Dr) as part of his name in any official or public communication.

It also advised that failure to comply with this directive may compel the Commission to exercise its regulatory mandate, including the imposition of appropriate sanctions in accordance with the law.

“We would appreciate receiving your response not later than 30th June, 2025,” it added.

Kwame Adom-Frimpong

Kwame Adom-Frimpong

For Kwame Adom-Frimpong of the Internal Audit Agency, GTEC, in a letter dated June 16, 2025, raised an issue with his continued use of the academic title “Professor,” specifically in reference to himself as “Prof Kwame Adom-Frimpong”.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Commission wishes to express its concern regarding the use of the unearned academic titles. The use of such titles, particularly where they lack formal academic validation, is potentially misleading and does not align with the established academic protocols governing the use of academic ranks in Ghana.”

“In the light of the above, the Commission is requesting you submit a copy of the letter from a recognised institution appointing or promoting you to the rank of associate professor or professor. Otherwise, you are requested as a matter of urgency to cease the use of the title “Professor.”

“You are further required to provide verifiable evidence that the title has been withdrawn from all relevant platforms, including but not limited to official documents, institutional profiles, websites, letterheads, and any other public or professional representations,” the letter added.

It said the commission was expecting his full cooperation in addressing the matter and looked forward to his prompt compliance.

The use of such titles, particularly where they lack formal academic validation, is potentially misleading and does not align with the established academic protocols governing the use of academic ranks in Ghana.

Graphic Online understands that GTEC in separate letters to the two have them acknowledged their continued use of the academic title “Doctor”

The commission has therefore asked them to provide clarification on the awarding institution of the doctoral title, whether

the degree was earned or honorary, when it was conferred and the process through which the title was conferred.
GTEC in the letter to them expressed serious concern about the increasing trend of individuals in Ghana adopting honorary doctorates-such as the one associated with names as academic or professional titles.
“These degrees, often conferred by institutions withing and outside Ghana, do not carry the academic equivalence of earned doctoral qualifications

In a letter dated June 16, 2025, GTEC expressed concern over the continued use of unearned academic titles, emphasising that such practices can be misleading and undermine established academic protocols in Ghana.

GTEC’s Deputy Director-General, Prof. Augustine Ocloo, stated that the use of unearned titles, whether conferred by institutions within Ghana or abroad, is inconsistent with the standards governing the conferment and use of academic distinctions in the country.

Supreme Court nominee defends use of wigs and gowns in Ghana’s courts

0

Supreme Court nominee Justice Dennis Dominic Adjei has come out strongly in favour of maintaining the traditional use of wigs and gowns by legal practitioners in Ghana, insisting that the attire plays a crucial role in preserving the dignity, identity and security of the country’s judicial system.

Speaking during his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, June 16, 2025, Justice Adjei dismissed previous suggestions to discard the courtroom dress code, warning that doing so could open the door to impersonation and diminish the professional distinctiveness of judges and lawyers.

“The wigs and the gowns have several significances,” he said. “Between 2012 and 2014, there was a proposal that we should not be wearing wigs and others, and we found that some people who were not lawyers were posing as lawyers—because it’s just a matter of getting a jacket and tie, and you can go to court and announce yourself.”

Justice Adjei welcomed Parliament’s recent reaffirmation of the traditional legal attire, noting that its importance is recognised globally. He stressed that in both international and national courts, robes are a standard of judicial identification.

“Wherever you go, every court has its own robe—international courts, national courts. To me, it sets you apart. It shows that this is a judge. It doesn’t take anything from us,” he added.

Responding to a question from Cape Coast South MP Kweku Ricketts-Hagan, who raised doubts about the continued relevance of the attire, Justice Adjei did not mince words in his rejection of any proposal to abandon it.

“I treasure it. Honourable Ricketts-Hagan, I will not support your position,” he said firmly.

Background to the robes

The tradition of courtroom wigs dates back to the 17th Century, when wigs became popular in British society during the reign of Charles II. Originally worn to disguise baldness often associated with syphilis, wigs quickly became part of elite fashion. By 1685, they had been adopted by the judiciary as a symbol of authority and formality.

LatexFoamPromo

In Ghana, the Legal Profession Act, 1960 (Act 32) mandates adherence to dress codes set by the Ghana Legal Council, which includes the wearing of wigs and gowns during court proceedings. Lawyers and judges who fail to comply risk disciplinary action.

In 2017, then Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo issued a circular reinforcing the importance of legal dress, citing three key reasons: to preserve tradition and the uniqueness of the legal profession; to ensure security and anonymity of judges and lawyers; and to uphold the formal tone of judicial proceedings.

Justice Adjei’s endorsement of the practice adds to growing voices within the legal fraternity advocating for the continued use of wigs and gowns—not merely as a nod to history, but as a functional tool of professionalism and judicial decorum.

GSA, cement producers work to reflect cedi gains in pricing

0

File photo of cement bags File photo of cement bags

The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) says it is working with cement producers to ensure that prices reflect the cedi’s recent appreciation against major trading currencies.

The Director-General of GSA, Professor Alex Dodoo, stated that most manufacturers have already submitted their pricing for June.

However, the Cement Manufacturing Development Committee, he said, is expected to review and certify these prices while also engaging producers on the need to adjust pricing downward to provide relief for consumers.

“Our currency has appreciated and prices of several things on the markets are falling in line with this. So, the expectation is that the price of cement must be reduced… As agreed by the Committee, including industry players, that any benefit of the Ghanaian cedi should also benefit consumers; we will ensure this as we certify the prices,” he said.

The GSA boss, who was speaking in an interview on the sidelines of a stakeholder engagement on construction materials dubbed ‘Symposium on Science-Based Innovation for Robust Construction Materials in Ghana’ in Accra, also noted that “most of the prices submitted so far have not been varied as compared to the May prices”.

“Two things normally tend to happen when a currency strengthens: companies wait to see whether it’s just a blip or a long-term thing before they take action. In the same way – and also in fairness to the companies – when the currency was falling, the price changes were not daily.”

In view of this, he said he has already been assured by manufacturers that if the cedi’s strengthening is maintained over the next few weeks, “we should expect prices to fall”.

This development comes not long after the Ghana Real Estate Developers Association (GREDA) called for suppliers of building materials to reduce prices in response to improved macroeconomic conditions.

GREDA president Dr James Orleans-Lindsay noted that although the cedi has appreciated, the cost of critical construction inputs – particularly cement and iron rods – remains unchanged.

“Housing developers continue to price homes in cedis, reflecting exchange rate movements. However, suppliers have not adjusted their prices accordingly, which is undermining efforts to make housing affordable,” he said.

Professor Dodoo also disclosed that Ghana is the first country so far to have developed a standard for cement that replaces a large amount of clinker. “We can reduce clinker to as low as 35 percent instead of 60 percent. That cement is called limestone calcined clay cement (LC3),” he said, adding that Ghana has the biggest factory producing this type of cement.

With these ongoing developments, he stated that the country will save about half a billion dollars in terms of money that would otherwise be used to import clinker substitutes.

“Because now the clinker replacement is cheaper than clinker. It is also local. It is also green.”

He also urged builders and construction companies to ensure that different types of cement are not mixed during building construction.

Professor Doodo said, previously, information or knowledge on the proper use of cement, concrete and other building materials was not widely understood.

But he noted that the country has now developed laws to ensure that cement on the market is of good quality. “We have standards and GSA is doing a lot of surveillance.” He mentioned that this has resulted in the discovery of products that do not meet standards and their removal from the market, as well as halting the manufacturers.

He therefore appealed for builders and construction companies to ensure that, at least, their informal workers are given enough knowledge to ensure the stability of their buildings.

“We have a handbook for the construction industry, for the informal workers, which will be made available for free to use.”

“Buying two bags of cement from one company, two bags from another company, mixing them and using them for building is dangerous. It’s simply dangerous. Using too much water is dangerous.”

The stakeholder symposium was organised by GSA in partnership with the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing for Germany (BAM) and others.

The Head of Institutional Partnerships, German Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, Dr Norbert Schultes, also speaking in an interview on the sidelines of the event, stressed their commitment to building institutional partnerships with organisations such as GSA to improve standards, especially in the area of construction.

Latif Adaari faces heavy backlash after controversial FA Cup final penalty call

Referee Latif Adaari (L) took charge of the 2025 FA Cup final Referee Latif Adaari (L) took charge of the 2025 FA Cup final

Referee Latif Adaari has come under intense fire from Ghanaian football fans following his late penalty decision in the 2025 MTN FA Cup final.

The decision, handed Asante Kotoko a 2-1 victory over Division One side Golden Kick at the University of Ghana Stadium on Sunday, June 15, 2025.

The spot-kick, awarded with just minutes to play, sparked outrage both inside the stadium and online.

Many fans believe the decision was soft, if not outright dubious, and ultimately decided the outcome of the match.

The penalty, calmly converted by Kwame Opoku to complete his brace, sealed Kotoko’s 10th FA Cup title and ended their eight-year drought in the competition.

But for many, the celebration was overshadowed by officiating controversy.

In the aftermath of the match, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has charged Golden Kick Football Club with misconduct.

The club’s fans threw objects onto the pitch in protest of the referee’s call, leading to a brief stoppage of play.

Additionally, the club’s official social media accounts made scathing remarks about the match officials, prompting further disciplinary action.

Injured students at the hospital

The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has tasked the Ghana Education Service (GES) to investigate the case of eight Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates from Nangbagu Yapala M/A JHS in the Northern Region who were involved in a road accident on their way to write the English and Creative Arts and Design papers at the Tamale Senior High School examination centre.

According to Haruna Iddrisu, “Following the tragic accident, I have tasked the GES with investigating the case, and appropriate remedial actions will be taken to allow them to progress where necessary within the rules of the assessment authorities of the country.”

The accident occurred on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, when the tricycle carrying the students reportedly had a steering malfunction, causing the rider to lose control and crash. A supervisor, Mr. Abdulai Mohammed, recounted that despite the students’ insistence on writing the exam, they arrived after the paper had ended.

‘Leave Me Alone’ – Ayra Starr Lashes Out Over Constant Online Bullying

CLOGSAG Orders Strike Over Registrar Misconduct

0

Isaac Bampoe Addo , Executive Secretary, CLOGSAG

The Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOGSAG), has directed all staff of the Births and Deaths Registry nationwide to stay home starting Tuesday, June 17, 2025.

The action is in response to an increasingly hostile work environment under the Acting Registrar, Mr. Samuel Adom Botchway.

In a letter to the Minister for Labour, Jobs, and Employment, copied to key state institutions, CLOGSAG accused Mr. Botchway of persistent misconduct despite prior petitions and negotiations. The allegations include unilateral postings and reassignments of staff without authorization, verbal assault, and creating an uncongenial atmosphere through constant threats.

CLOGSAG stated that these actions have rendered the working environment unsafe and intolerable. The directive follows a similar nationwide strike in March 2025, which was suspended after assurances of ongoing dialogue. However, the Association claims little progress has been made.

The National Executive Council (NEC) of CLOGSAG stated that staff should remain at home until a safe and congenial working environment is guaranteed.

Polytanks deployed as temporary relief amid Ada East water crisis

0

The Ada East District Assembly has begun implementing temporary relief measures to address a worsening water crisis in Totope and surrounding communities.

Although Ghana Water Limited (GWL) recently laid pipelines to supply water to the affected areas, many residents continue to face dry taps or, in some cases, report traces of lead compounds in the potable water.

Speaking to Citi News on Monday, June 16, District Chief Executive (DCE) Kenneth Kanor said the Assembly, in collaboration with GWL, is working to find a permanent solution. In the interim, polytanks have been distributed to selected communities to help ease the strain.

“The CEO for Ghana Water was here to assess the areas that had problems. Currently, we are waiting for the report, and once it is presented, we will determine the best way forward. Moreover, we have given them some polytanks to ease their water problems for now. From next month, I believe we will see very good improvement in terms of water delivery,” the DCE said.

Residents remain hopeful that the ongoing interventions will bring lasting relief to the long-standing water challenges in the district.

NPP National Chairman, Stephen Ntim NPP National Chairman, Stephen Ntim

The family of New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairman, Stephen Ayensu Ntim, has requested that he temporarily step down from all party responsibilities due to health concerns and the urgent need for rest and medical care.

In a letter dated June 16, 2025, addressed to the Chairman of the NPP Council of Elders, the family expressed serious concerns about Mr. Ntim’s current state of health, citing “cognitive dissonance and mental incapacitation.”

They emphasized that his continued involvement in party activities infringes on his personal rights and poses a risk to his well-being.

The letter—signed by Adelaide Ntim (MP), Kingsley Oteng (Family Head), and other close relatives—acknowledged Mr. Ntim’s decades of service to the party, beginning with his role as First National Deputy Chairman and continuing in his current leadership position.

Despite his unwavering dedication, the family stated, “Steve is not well at the moment,” and urged the party to excuse him from the upcoming NPP meeting scheduled for June 17 at the Alisa Hotel, which he was expected to chair.

“Common sense dictates that Steve, as a matter of urgency, be temporarily excused not only from the rigours of active politics but also from intra-party activities, to allow for the peace and calm necessary for his ongoing medical treatment,” the letter read.

The family made a heartfelt and responsible appeal to the NPP leadership, urging them to recognize the seriousness of Mr. Ntim’s condition and to prioritize his recovery before considering his return to active party duties.

The size of my manhood is ruining my chances at love

0

File photo of a worried man File photo of a worried man

Dear GhanaWeb,

I’m a 34-year-old man and I’ve struggled in relationships for one heartbreaking reason: the small size of my manhood.

It’s not something I’m proud to talk about, but I’m sharing this because I’m desperate for answers, guidance, or help, anything that could improve my situation.

Over the years, I’ve been with few women. At first, everything seems fine. Some even say size doesn’t matter to them. But the truth always comes out after a month or two, once intimacy enters the picture. They start to complain, lose interest, and eventually leave.

The longest relationship I had lasted almost a year.

She really tried, took me to various places and gave me all kinds of traditional and herbal treatments in hopes of solving the issue, but when nothing worked, she walked away without saying goodbye. That broke me.

I’m not a lazy man. I’m ready to start a family. I have a stable life and a deep desire to settle down. My mother is in her late 60s and I’m her only son. I want her to see me married. I want to give her grandchildren. Most importantly, I want to build a home filled with love and respect.

But how can I do that when every woman eventually leaves me because of something I can’t control? I try to stay strong, but I live with this pain every single day. I ask myself constantly, what did I do to deserve this?

I don’t want women who only say they can “manage” me out of desperation. They eventually walk away too. I want someone who truly accepts me, someone who stays because she loves me, not because she’s settling.

I don’t want sympathy. I want real help. Is there any genuine, medically proven way to improve this? Any treatment that works? Has anyone gone through this and come out on the other side?

Please, I just want a chance to experience love without shame. I want to be the kind of man a woman desires, not just in heart and mind, but physically too.

The event was graced by a powerful lineup of stakeholders and thought leaders, including Madam Jacqueline Commodore, Executive Secretary of the Ghana Association of Microfinance Companies (GAMC); Adeline Ocran, Head of the Payments Systems Department at the Bank of Ghana; Mohammed Omar, Regional Head of Garment Dressmakers Association in Ghana; Bernard Avle, General Manager of Channel One TV; Cynthia Adjei, representative from GIZ Ghana; and several executives from partner FinTech’s, Investors, MSME associations, clients and members of the press including Joy News and Citi Business News.

From its beginnings in Tema in 2010, Solis has undergone a remarkable transformation. In 2022, the institution initiated a digital-first overhaul under new leadership, culminating in its rebranding and regulatory approval from the Bank of Ghana as a Tier 2 Microfinance Institution.

“As markets changed and client needs evolved, so did our aspirations,” said in a speech read on the behalf of Mr. Francis Sekoh-Dadzie, Board Chairman of Solis.

“We recognized the need to reposition ourselves with a fresh identity, a strengthened governance framework, and a sharper mission. Thus, Solis means “sun”. was born.”

The app, launched by Madam Adeline Ocran, serving as a delegate of the Head of the Payments Systems Department at the Bank of Ghana, was described as a milestone in the nation’s financial digitization journey.

“This is more than a digital product, it is a profound commitment to financial access for the informal sector,” she said.

Mr. Anthony Abakisi, founder of Solis, in a keynote speech during the event, reiterated the company’s broader vision: “This launch is not just about an app. It is about a movement, where every Ghanaian, regardless of their income level or location, can take control of their finances.”

“We aim to create inclusive, user-cantered financial solutions that support sustainable economic growth.”

He further praised Solis for its forward-thinking mindset and for embracing digital innovations that directly serve the needs of small businesses.

According to him, MSMEs play a critical role in job creation and national development yet often lack adequate support from formal banking systems.

He emphasized that GIZ’s partnership with Solis is designed to close that gap and empower these businesses to thrive.

Currently undergoing final approval from the Bank of Ghana, the Boafo Pa Loan offers flexible terms and asset-based financing, meeting the needs of those often overlooked by traditional banks.

Bridging Technology and Trust

By combining strong digital infrastructure with real sector partnerships, Solis Microfinance redefines what it means to serve the informal economy.

“This is the future of finance for everyday Ghanaians,” said Mr. Abakisi. “It’s fast, inclusive, and designed to work for your hustle.”

With continued collaboration from development partners like GIZ, and oversight from the Bank of Ghana, Solis is poised to expand its reach and impact, ensuring no trader, artisan, or micro-entrepreneur is left behind.

My heart is heavy, our people are being killed – MI Abaga

Renowned Nigerian rapper and music executive, Jude Abaga, popularly known as MI, has expressed deep sorrow over the latest wave of killings in Benue State, declaring solidarity with affected communities and calling for an end to the cycle of violence.

In a statement on Monday via X, MI said, “My heart is heavy. It grieves me deeply to see so much of the Middle Belt bleed. The recent killings in Benue are not just statistics, they are our people, our families, our communities being torn apart.”

He added, “I stand in solidarity with my brothers and sisters in Benue. Your pain is my pain. We can’t normalise this cycle of violence that has plagued our land for too long. To those we’ve lost: we will not forget you. To those still standing, we stand with you.”

The rapper’s statement follows a series of reactions to the mass killings in Benue State, where over 100 people were reportedly killed in Guma Local Government Area in what has been described as a two-day rampage by suspected herders.

Local leaders claim the actual death toll may be much higher, with entire families wiped out and some victims reportedly burned alive.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar had earlier described the situation as “a national emergency,” urging the Federal Government and Benue State authorities to take immediate and decisive action.

He called for a prompt and transparent investigation into the attacks, along with improved security deployment across the region.

The violence has sparked outrage on social media, with many Nigerians demanding that a state of emergency be declared in Benue State.

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has formally cautioned Awutu Senya East Member of Parliament, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor to immediately stop using the academic title “Doctor,” citing concerns over its unauthorised and unverified use.

In a strongly worded statement issued on Monday, June 16, GTEC said it was alarmed by Naa Koryoo’s continued use of the title despite no evidence of a valid academic conferment. The Commission described her conduct as misleading and a breach of established academic protocols.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Commission wishes to express its serious concern regarding the use of unearned academic titles, whether conferred by institutions within Ghana or abroad,” the statement read.

The Commission concluded by urging full compliance and requested that confirmation of the changes be submitted without delay.

Anthony Joshua/Legacy Rise Sports team calls on President Mahama

0

By Iddi Yire

Accra, June 16, GNA – Mr Anthony Joshua, a renowned British professional boxer on Monday called on President John Dramani Mahama at the Presidency in Accra.

Mr Anthony Joshua is currently in Ghana, to participate in the “Battle of the Beasts” boxing event, which is being spearheaded by Legacy Rise Sports at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra.

The event is being promoted by Legacy Rise Sports, which is owned by Sharaf Mahama, the son of President Mahama.

The event is part of Legacy Rise Sports’ efforts to elevate boxing in Ghana and across Africa.

Mr Anthony Joshua was accompanied by Mr Kofi Iddie Adams, the Minister of Sports and Recreation, and Mr Sharaf Mahama, Chief Executive Officer of Legacy Rise Sports.

President Mahama in his remarks noted that reviews from Friday’s game during “Battle of the Beasts’ at Bukom Arena had been positive.

He said talents exist in some, but a champion usually emerges and changes his society.

“We wish that Anthony will become great again; we’ve seen many greats fall and hopefully he comes back stronger.”

He said Ghana had been a powerhouse in boxing since the First Republic, but the sport declined over time; however, the Government tried hard to revive it, and that was why they built the Bukom Arena.

He said the dream was built on the hope that they could scout and find new talent but that didn’t happen.

“One of my regrets is that we didn’t build the Bukom Boxing Arena bigger. We need a much bigger space following the growing interest,” the President said.

On son, Sharaf’s passion sports, the President said Sharaf had been passionate about sports since childhood.

“He knew the footballers, their wives, even their kids. I allowed him to pursue his passion. He started with football, then moved into boxing,” President Mahama said.

“I truly believe we can raise future world champions.”

The President said Mr Anthony Joshua would be their ambassador for boxing in Africa, and that Ghana was his second home; saying “If you want a passport, we’ll gladly give you one”.

Mr Kofi Iddie Adams, the Minister of Sports and Recreation, highlighted some achievements of President Mahama in the sports sector.

He said the sports sector had responded positively to the support given under Mahama’s leadership.

He noted that parts of the Bukom Boxing Arena, especially the hostels meant for an academy, were not used for their intended purpose.

The Minister reiterated that football was performing well, and athletics is gaining international recognition.

He said last Friday, Ghana became the centre of global boxing activity through the Legacy Rise Sports event.

Mr Anthony Joshua held the unified world heavyweight championship twice between 2016 and 2021.

At regional level, he held the British and Commonwealth heavyweight titles from 2015 to 2016.

On his part, Mr Anthony Joshua expressed gratitude for the warm reception accorded him since he arrived in the country.

He said, he was amazed by the culture and the reception he had received.

“I understand some of your Policies and what you’re trying to do to revive sports in Ghana,” he said.

Mr Anthony Joshua said he was branching into a sector where they could connect Africa to the rest of the world.

How has ‘a lion has a tail’ improved our lives? – Akrobeto questions quality of education in Ghana

0

Ghanaian actor and comedian, Akrobeto Ghanaian actor and comedian, Akrobeto

Ghanaian actor and comedian Akwasi Boadi, popularly known as Akrobeto, has expressed dissatisfaction with the quality of education provided to students in Ghana.

He pointed out that some of the subjects taught in schools over the years, including unnecessary children’s rhymes like “A lion has a tail,” have had little to no impact on students’ lives.

“You will go to school and be beaten to learn `a lion has a tail…’. So how will this improve our lives? It doesn’t help in any way so the teachers should rather teach relevant things” he stated.

Speaking in an interview on Adom TV, Akrobeto explained that he chose to enrol his children in good schools because they may not inherit his unique talent, and without proper education, they could face challenges in life.

“If I don’t enrol my children in school, they might not be lucky to have the talent I have. They will grow and insult me for not taking care of them. People will also criticise me that I didn’t take my children to school” he said.

Akrobeto went on to reflect on his own upbringing, stating that he was unable to attend school because his father struggled financially.

However, he said he is determined to give his children the opportunity he didn’t have.

“My father wasn’t having enough money that’s why I didn’t go to school,” he added.

CLOGSAG directs Births and Deaths Registry staff to boycott work nationwide

Isaac Bampoe Addo, Executive Secretary of CLOGSAG Isaac Bampoe Addo, Executive Secretary of CLOGSAG

The Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) has directed all staff of the Births and Deaths Registry nationwide to stay away from work beginning Tuesday, June 17, 2025, citing a toxic and unconducive working environment under the Acting Registrar, Samuel Adom Botchway.

In a statement issued and signed by its Executive Secretary, Isaac Bampoe Addo, CLOGSAG accused Botchway of unauthorised staff postings, reassignments, and verbal abuse, which it says have created an “uncongenial atmosphere” in the workplace.

The Association noted that although a nationwide strike was declared on February 28 this year over Botchway’s appointment, it was later suspended following assurances from the Minister for Labour, Jobs and Employment that efforts would be made to resolve the impasse.

However, at an emergency meeting held on Thursday, June 12, 2025, CLOGSAG’s National Executive Council (NEC) said the situation had further deteriorated, forcing them to issue a stay-at-home directive until a safe and respectful working environment is guaranteed.

“The staff of Births and Deaths should stay at home effective Tuesday, June 17, 2025, until safe and congenial working environments are guaranteed,” the statement read.

CLOGSAG is calling for swift intervention from the government to address the matter and restore normalcy within the Registry.

GPPCA endorses local printing of textbooks, urges government to back policy with legislation

The GPPCA says the move will help resolve the country's textbook shortage The GPPCA says the move will help resolve the country’s textbook shortage

The Ghana Printers and Paper Converters Association (GPPCA) has lauded President John Dramani Mahama’s recent directive mandating that all government textbooks be printed locally.

According to a statement signed by its president, James Appiah-Berko, the GPPCA described this move as a strategic step toward resolving the country’s persistent textbook shortage and boosting the local print industry.

To capitalise on the initiative, the GPPCA suggested a series of steps the government could take, including eliminating all pre-production tariffs, suspending agreements that flood local markets with imported books, and imposing levies on imported textbooks.

“Government should take advantage of this provision to impose some levies on imported books, thus providing stability within the local printing industry,” it stated.

The association affirmed its readiness and capacity to support the government in this initiative.

“In a previous major contract cycle, only three out of many capable local printers managed to produce and deliver the entire consignment, proving technical competence, operational readiness, and national commitment,” the statement continued.

The GPPCA also highlighted the potential of the 24‑hour economy, stating that many printing firms currently operate under capacity, with equipment idle outside a single shift.

“Printers can work in the envisaged 3-eight-hour shift system, given that most printing and package production companies are under-utilising their capacity, with machines lying idle for want of printing and packaging job contracts,” the statement said.

Looking ahead, the GPPCA is requesting that the government pass legislation requiring 100% local sourcing for government printing needs, remove all exemptions on imported finished printed goods, and foster a business-friendly environment that enables local printers to expand, create jobs, and increase tax remittances.

The statement concluded by reaffirming the GPPCA’s readiness to collaborate with relevant government agencies to ensure the effective rollout of this landmark policy.

“GPPCA is committed to building strong relationships with key stakeholders, particularly the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Education, and other industry partners to effectively advocate for and sustain trust and support for the effective implementation of the President’s revolutionary drive,” it concluded.

Watch how Bonucci’s brutal tackle floored ex-England captain Steph Houghton

Bonucci tackled Steph during the charity game Bonucci tackled Steph during the charity game

Former Italy centre-back Leonardo Bonucci stunned fans at Old Trafford on Sunday, 15, June, 2025, after launching into a fierce sliding tackle on ex-England Women’s captain Steph Houghton during the 2025 Soccer Aid charity match.

The uncompromising challenge came late in the match as Houghton chased a loose ball down England’s right flank.

While the former Manchester City defender approached with measured caution, Bonucci showed no restraint, lunging in with trademark aggression, winning the ball but flattening Houghton in the process.

The 37-year-old Italian’s momentum carried directly through Houghton, who hit the turf visibly hurt.

The game was halted as Bonucci, immediately sensing the impact, signaled for medical attention.

Medical staff rushed to Houghton’s aid and attended to her for several minutes while the crowd watched in concerned silence.

Thankfully, the ex-Lionesses skipper recovered enough to finish the game, though the pain was evident.

The match, which ended in a dramatic 5-4 win for the World XI, was meant to raise funds for UNICEF and showcase football in a light-hearted, entertaining way, but Bonucci’s challenge reminded many of his famously rugged approach from his playing days.

Clips of the incident quickly went viral across social media, sparking a storm of reactions.

Some viewers slammed the tackle as needlessly aggressive in a charity match, while others defended the Italian’s competitive spirit and commitment.

Bonucci retired from professional football in 2024 following a stint with Turkish side Fenerbahce.

His decorated career includes nine Serie A titles with Juventus and a starring role in Italy’s Euro 2020 triumph.

Ofori-Atta has always been ready to talk to OSP – Wife

0

Prof. Mrs. Angela Ofori-Atta, wife of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, has reiterated her husband’s willingness to cooperate with the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) in its ongoing investigations.

This statement comes amid a tense standoff between Mr. Ofori-Atta and the OSP following the office’s redeclaration of the former minister as wanted.

The Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, has insisted on Mr. Ofori-Atta’s physical presence for questioning, rejecting the proposal for a video interview as inappropriate and out of step with the seriousness of the ongoing corruption probe.

Mr. Agyebeng emphasised that a suspect in a criminal investigation does not dictate the methods of the investigative body and that the OSP would not countenance such conduct.

But in an interview on Citi Eyewitness News on Monday June 16, she emphasised that her husband has consistently expressed his readiness to engage with the OSP.

She noted that he had offered to answer questions through his legal representatives and had also proposed a video interview, both of which are legally permissible.

She further quoted her husband’s sentiments, stating, “He is ready to talk to the special prosecutor so that the Special Prosecutor can continue with his investigation. First of all he said you can ask my lawyers whatever questions you want to ask and I will respond through my lawyers and then secondly he has said if you would rather talk to me please let’s do the video.

“These are allowed by law so Kenneth is ready. The Lord did not give us a spirit of timidity but of courage, love and self-discipline. He has always been ready to talk about his work.”

Meanwhile, Ofori-Atta’s wife has also confirmed that her husband has undergone successful surgery for prostate cancer at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

She disclosed that the surgery — a robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy — took place on Friday, June 13, and lasted over four hours.

“The doctors are pleased with how the procedure went and will now place him on a postoperative regime,” she added.

Personal faith must not influence same-sex cases – Sir Dennis Adjei

0

Supreme Court judge nominee, Justice Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei, has cautioned against allowing personal religious beliefs to influence judicial decisions, particularly in cases involving same-sex rights and other sensitive matters.

Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, June 16, 2025, Justice Adjei stressed the importance of judicial impartiality, noting that judges are bound by their constitutional oath to interpret and apply the law fairly to all.

“When we talk about our faiths—whether Christian, Muslim, or any other—it is a personal matter,” he said. “But when you are in the courtroom, you have taken an oath to be impartial, regardless of who appears before you. Once I put on my judicial cap, I must act according to that oath.”

Responding to a question about his ability to rule fairly on LGBTQ+ matters, considering his active role in the Catholic Church, Justice Adjei stated that his faith would not affect his legal reasoning or judgments.

He explained that in his current role as a judge at the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, he has handled numerous complex and rights-based cases, including those concerning sexual orientation, always adhering strictly to legal principles.

“If any matter comes before me, whether it concerns same-sex issues or something else, I will consider the facts and apply the law. My faith will not influence the outcome,” he affirmed. “Anything else would be a failure to discharge my duty as a judge.”

Justice Adjei warned that allowing religion to guide court decisions could erode confidence in the justice system and lead to sectarianism within the judiciary.

“If faith were to guide judgments, then each religious group might want someone on the bench to speak for their interest. That should not be the case,” he stated.

Dr Ayine’s ORAL briefing is within the law – Vicky Bright

A former legal advisor to ex-President John Agyekum Kufuor, Vicky Bright, has expressed support for the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr Dominic Ayine, over his recent public briefing on the “Operation Recover All Loot” (ORAL) initiative.

Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show on June 16, 2025, she described the Attorney General’s actions as both lawful and necessary.

“This is nothing new. It is within the confines of the law to update the public on the progress of investigations. The June 13, 2025, briefing will not prejudice the ongoing cases,” she stated.

During the briefing, the Attorney General outlined the status of several high-profile investigations targeting former government officials, some of whom have already been arraigned.

Among those currently facing trial is the former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), Kwabena Adu-Boahene, who has been charged alongside his wife and another accomplice over a $7 million cyber defense system contract scandal.

Former Deputy Executive Director of the National Service Authority (NSA), Gifty Oware-Mensah, has also been named in the ongoing payroll fraud case involving ghost names.

The ORAL initiative, launched earlier this year, aims to recover state funds allegedly lost through corrupt deals and mismanagement under previous administrations.

Mahama is Ghana’s most prepared President – Gabby Otchere-Darko

0

New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko has described President John Mahama as the most prepared leader in Ghana’s political history.

Speaking on Asaase Radio on Monday, the political figure analysed President Mahama’s unique career trajectory from local government to the presidency.

“I think the current president is probably the most prepared president we’ve had. From assemblyman all the way to where he is now, vice president, president, you’ve been in opposition, seen who your real friends are, learned from your mistakes, identified missed opportunities, and now you’ve been given another chance,” Mr Otchere-Darko stated.

However, the NPP insider warned that Mahama faces particular pressure to deliver on his campaign promises, especially those targeting young voters.

“The youth are unforgiving. They want jobs. They voted for you because they expect their aspirations to be met by your 24-hour economy policy and other promises. Satisfying them in this world of social media, new media, where every government action is overexposed and exaggerated, is a huge challenge,” he noted.

Gabby Otchere-Darko suggested the government’s role should focus on creating opportunities rather than direct employment.

“Your role is not to fulfill people’s aspirations directly, but to create the enabling environment for them to pursue those aspirations. If the government does that, creating space and opportunity, the youth must also put in the hard work to realise their goals.”

GES probes Lawra SHS tragedy, assures student safety

0

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has launched investigations into the tragic drowning incident that claimed the lives of seven cadet students from Lawra Senior High School in the Upper West Region.

In a statement issued on Monday, June 16, GES expressed deep sorrow over the incident, which occurred on Saturday morning, June 14, 2025.

The statement confirmed that sixteen second-year students from the school’s cadet corps had embarked on a routine morning jogging activity to the banks of the Black Volta River near Dikpe.

Tragically, ten of the students decided to cross the river in a canoe, which capsized midway through the journey. The incident led to the death of seven students: five girls, Loise Kaati, Florence Kandera, Joyce Kuzare, Evelyn Batumatu, and Munira Abu, and two boys, Maxwell Dampuorideme and Alfred Foyi. Three others were rescued alive.

The GES stated that the bodies of all deceased students had been successfully retrieved with the assistance of the Ghana Police Service, school authorities, and members of the Lawra community. One of the students, a Muslim, has already been buried under Islamic rites. Funeral rites for the other victims were held on Monday, June 16, in collaboration with their families.

While investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and prevent future occurrences, the GES has assured the public that psychological and emotional support is being provided to the surviving cadet members who are currently on campus.

The service further indicated that it is working closely with the Regional and District Directors of Education, the school’s administration, and relevant stakeholders to support the bereaved families and ensure the well-being of all affected students.

“Lawra SHS remains a safe learning environment,” the GES emphasized, adding that steps are being taken to strengthen safety protocols to avert such tragedies in the future.

Management also expressed appreciation for the swift efforts of all who participated in the rescue and recovery process, including the security services, school authorities, and the local search party.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families, the Lawra SHS community, and all affected by this heartbreaking tragedy,” the statement concluded.

Chief Justice can’t be President

0

A Court of Appeal judge, Justice Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei who has been nominated for appointment to the Supreme Court bench, has rejected the idea that the Chief Justice can act as President under Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, describing the view as constitutionally inaccurate and based on outdated legal interpretations.

Appearing before Parliament’s Appointment Committee on Monday [June 16, 2025] for vetting Just Adjei argued that the legal views expressed under the 1992 Constitution were “old.”

He said the notion that the Chief Justice can assume presidential powers in the absence of the President and Vice-President was based on a legal thinking that no longer applies.

He referred specifically to the Asare v Attorney-General case, explaining that the opinion expressed by Professor Kwaku Asare relied on historical precedent under the 1957 Order in Council, when the Chief Justice signed laws on behalf of the Governor-General.

“You cannot compare that system to the 1992 Constitution. There is no provision in our Constitution that allows the Chief Justice to act as President,” he said.

Justice Adjei added that such interpretations blur the line between the branches of government and threaten the independence of the judiciary.

“Why should a judge or Chief Justice, whose role is to resolve disputes, be given executive responsibilities? That would create a conflict of interest and undermine the principle of judicial neutrality,” he stated.

Members of the Appointment Committee of Parliament also questioned him on Article 60 of the Constitution, which deals with presidential succession.

LatexFoamPromo

Justice Adjei expressed concern about rulings that require the President to be physically present in Ghana to carry out his duties.

He argued that such interpretations fail to take into account the advances in technology and modern methods of governance.

“The Constitution must be interpreted with purpose. The realities of today are not the same as they were 30 years ago,” he said. “If the President can issue instructions and govern remotely, then absence should not automatically mean inability.”

He reiterated his support for a purposive interpretation of the Constitution, describing it as a “living organism” that must adapt to changing conditions.

“In future cases, the Court should take present realities into account,” he said, citing Justice Atuguba’s reasoning in Zenator v Lawrence and Tufuor v Attorney-General as examples of how purposive interpretation can guide constitutional decisions.

Justice Adjei has served in various capacities within the judiciary and is known for his academic contributions to constitutional law.

He is among seven nominees currently being vetted by the Appointments Committee of Parliament.

Stephen Ntim takes temporal break as NPP Chairman due to health concerns

0

The family of Stephen Ayensu Ntim, National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has requested his temporary withdrawal from all party duties, citing deteriorating health and the need for urgent medical attention and rest.

In a letter addressed to the Chairman of the NPP Council of Elders and dated June 16, 2025, the Ntim family emphasized Mr. Ntim’s long-standing dedication to the party, tracing his contributions from his early days as the First National Deputy Chairman to his current leadership role.

However, they expressed grave concern over his recent health complications, describing him as “not well at the moment” and currently experiencing “cognitive dissonance and mental incapacitation.”

The letter, signed jointly by key family members including Kingsley Oteng (Family Head), Adelaide Ntim (MP), and other close relatives, strongly opposed his participation in any party engagements, specifically a scheduled NPP meeting at Alisa Hotel on June 17, which Mr. Ntim was expected to chair.

They argue that attending or chairing such a high-profile event in his current state would not only be medically unsafe but could infringe on his personal rights.

“Common sense dictates that Steve, as a matter of urgency, be temporarily excused, not only from the rigors of active politics, but from intra-party activities in order to make way for needed peace and solace and for concentration on the ongoing required medical treatment process,” the letter read.

The family called on the NPP leadership to acknowledge the gravity of the situation and act in Mr. Ntim’s best interest by allowing him time to recover, while his future with the party remains under consideration

Many artistes struggle with live performances because they lack experience

0

Ghanaian dancehall artiste, Epixode Ghanaian dancehall artiste, Epixode

Ghanaian dancehall artiste Epixode has called on fellow musicians, especially younger ones, to improve their live-performance skills.

According to him, mastering such skills is essential for ensuring longevity in a musical career.

In a recent interview with Graphic Showbiz, he said, “I think it’s essential for every artiste and their team to invest in developing that side of the craft. An artiste’s longevity often depends on their ability to engage and entertain live audiences.”

He noted that many younger artistes lack this training, having come up at a time when there was less emphasis on live band performances.

“Many artistes struggle with this because live performances weren’t common during their formative years. Luckily, I come from a background where live music was integral, and I see the importance of honing this skill,” he explained.

Epixode added that while some artistes may excel in studio production or songwriting, his own identity is rooted in captivating live audiences.

“Every artiste has their strengths. Some might be great in the booth, while others thrive in writing or performing. It’s a blessing to be acknowledged among the best performers in Ghana,” he said.

He also spoke about expanding his impact beyond music performances, highlighting his recent win of the Music for Good Award at the 2024 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA).

According to him, the award recognises music’s potential to drive social impact.

“Winning the Music for Good Award is huge for me as a growing artiste. While many songs are crafted for dancing and enjoyment, I believe music should also serve deeper purposes, healing and conveying essential messages. I’m proud to use my lyrics and melodies to highlight pressing societal issues,” he commented.

The 35-year-old from Jamestown, Accra, credited his rise, including winning the Reggae/Dancehall Artiste of the Year in 2024, to his dynamic performances, message-driven music, and strong connection with live audiences.
