The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has firmly rejected any attempt to recognise Somaliland as an independent state.
He restated that the African Union’s unwavering commitment is to the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Somalia.
In a press release issued on December 26, the AU Commission Chair said he had taken note, with deep concern, of recent developments relating to Somaliland, warning that any move to recognise it would violate core principles of the continental body.
Mr Youssouf reaffirmed the African Union’s long-standing and consistent position, which is rooted in the Constitutive Act of the African Union, particularly the principle of respecting borders inherited at independence.
He recalled the 1964 decision of the Organisation of African Unity, which affirmed the inviolability of Africa’s colonial borders as a foundation for peace and stability on the continent.
The AU Commission Chair stressed that Somaliland remains an integral part of the Federal Republic of Somalia and said any initiative aimed at recognising it as an independent entity is firmly rejected by the African Union.
According to him, efforts to undermine Somalia’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity run directly against the fundamental principles of the African Union.
He warned that such actions also risk setting a dangerous precedent with far-reaching consequences for peace, security and stability across Africa.
Mr Youssouf reiterated the African Union’s full and unwavering support for Somalia, including ongoing efforts by Somali authorities to consolidate peace, strengthen state institutions and advance inclusive governance.
The statement underscores the African Union’s position that Africa’s stability depends on respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, and that any unilateral moves threatening these principles will not be supported by the continental body.

Leadership of the Veterans’ Administration, Ghana (VAG), on Christmas Day, December 25, 2025, paid a morale-boosting visit to ailing veterans on admission at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra, extending goodwill and support to former soldiers during the festive season.
The delegation, led by the Executive Director of VAG, Brigadier General (Rtd) Seidu Adams, toured the hospital wards and interacted with 10 ex-servicemen currently receiving medical care.
As part of the visit, the team presented the veterans with Christmas hampers filled with assorted consumables, alongside envelopes containing undisclosed cash donations, aimed at easing their burden and lifting their spirits.
Addressing the media after the visit, Brigadier General Adams said the initiative formed part of VAG’s annual Christmas outreach programme to ensure that retired soldiers on admission were not forgotten during the season of celebration.
“Christmas Day is a very special day, and we have come to share the greetings and peace of the season with our veteran colleagues who are on admission, We have about 10 of our colleagues here, and they were very excited to receive Christmas hampers from us and a small envelope as well.” “This will go a long way to boost their morale and also help them psychologically as they recover from their various illnesses,” he stated.
He noted that the gesture was intended not only as material support but also as emotional encouragement.
“We wish them well and hope to see them back on their feet in the coming year,” he added.
Brigadier General Adams explained that the Christmas hospital visits had become a tradition for the Veterans’ Administration, rooted in the values of compassion and solidarity that defined military service.
“Christmas is a period of sharing. Every year, we come to share with our colleagues who are on admission so they can also feel loved, happy and motivated to overcome their sicknesses,” he said.
He used the occasion to deliver a Christmas message to veterans, serving personnel and Ghanaians at large, emphasising love, sacrifice and gratitude.
The visit, he said underscored VAG’s continued commitment to the welfare of Ghanaian veterans, particularly those facing health challenges.
“This season is about love, sharing and sacrifice, whatever we have, we should be able to share with those who do not have. We must also remember that it is by the grace of God that we have come this far,” he said, urging citizens to reflect and strive to live better lives in the year ahead.
One of the beneficiaries, visibly moved by the gesture, expressed deep appreciation to the leadership of VAG.
“I am very, very grateful and honestly shocked because I was not expecting this at all, i never thought you would remember me on Christmas Day, and even more so because today is also my birthday. This means a lot to me, and I am truly thankful,” he added.

The MTN Ghana Foundation has donated 150 baby hampers to mothers who delivered during the Christmas season at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, as part of its annual Boxing Day outreach programme to support families and appreciate customers nationwide.
The donation forms part of a nationwide initiative by the Foundation, which is distributing about 700 baby hampers to mothers in 30 hospitals nationwide during the festive period.
Speaking at the presentation, the Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer of MTN Ghana, Adwoa Afriyie Wiafe, said the initiative reflects MTN’s enduring commitment to social responsibility and its tradition of giving back to society, particularly during the festive season.
She explained that Boxing Day offers a meaningful opportunity to support new mothers, especially those who may lack essential items required to care for their babies during the critical early stages of life.
“At MTN, giving back is part of who we are. Today, we are here to support mothers who delivered during this Christmas period, to put smiles on their faces and to show our appreciation to our customers and stakeholders for their continued support,” Mrs. Wiafe stated.
She disclosed that out of the total 700 hampers being distributed nationwide, 150 were allocated to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, underscoring the Foundation’s continued partnership with the country’s premier referral facility.
Mrs. Wiafe also used the occasion to caution customers to remain vigilant during the festive season, particularly against mobile money fraud.
She urged the public never to share their Mobile Money (MoMo) PINs with anyone, stressing that MTN will never request such information, and encouraged customers to report suspicious calls through official MTN customer care channels.
Receiving the donation on behalf of the hospital, the Head of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr. Charles Takyi, expressed profound appreciation to the MTN Ghana Foundation for its sustained support to the department over the years.
“This is not the first time MTN has supported us. They have been a backbone to the department, including the renovation of our maternity second floor and other critical interventions,” Dr. Takyi said.
He highlighted key challenges facing the department, including the need for improved infrastructure, modern medical equipment, and adequate logistics to enhance maternal and neonatal care.
He therefore appealed to corporate institutions, non-governmental organisations, and development partners to support efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery at the facility.
Dr. Takyi assured the public of the department’s commitment to delivering quality healthcare services in the coming year and extended Christmas and New Year goodwill messages to patients and the general public.
The beneficiaries who received the baby hampers expressed joy and appreciation to the MTN Ghana Foundation for coming to their aid during the festive season. They commended MTN for the timely support, noting that the items would significantly ease the financial burden of caring for their newborns. A video making the rounds showed the moment she, in the company of her brother, Oheneba Nana Kwame Kyeretwie and some young ladies, arrived at Afia Kobi Park, Manhyia Palace, where the durbar was taking place.
Clad in white attire, she appeared to be conversing with her friend as she made her way to the entrance of the park when someone shouted her name and said, “Ohemaa, Afehyia pa,” a usual seasonal greeting often used during festive periods or the New Year.
She gently turned, smiled broadly, and responded in Twi, “Afe nko mbe to yɛn,” to wit, “May we live to see the end of the year.”

Fifteen individuals have been arrested following a sporadic shooting incident at the Ho Central Mosque earlier today, Friday, December 26.

The incident disrupted morning jummah prayers, prompting a swift response from security forces who took the suspects into custody. At least seven Muslims were injured and are receiving treatment at various hospitals in Ho, the Volta regional capital.

The Mamprugu Traditional Council has strongly condemned the removal of the Bawku Naaba, Naa Sheriga Alhaji Seidu Abagre, from Bawku, describing the action as unlawful, unconstitutional, and deeply troubling.
In a statement issued on December 26, 2025, the Nayiri, Overlord and King of Mamprugu, accused the Government of Ghana of carrying out indiscriminate arrests, intimidation and harassment of law-abiding Mamprusi citizens under the pretext of enforcing a mediation process on the Bawku conflict.
The statement described the removal of the Bawku Naaba as the most disturbing development, alleging that the operation led to the deaths of two innocent Mamprusi citizens and left several others injured. According to the Mamprugu Traditional Council, the action was carried out despite what it calls the “clear unconstitutionality and legal infirmity” of the operation.
The Nayiri also condemned the arrest of an executive member of the Mamprugu Youth Association, Alhaji Inusah Abdul-Majeed Badigamsira, who was allegedly picked up at about 2:00 a.m. on December 23. The council said his arrest was solely for sharing a document authored by Martin Amidu on the mediation process, while the author himself was not questioned, a situation the council described as selective justice.
The statement warned that such actions, carried out under the cover of darkness, violate constitutional liberties, inflame tensions, and undermine efforts toward peace. It stressed that repression cannot be mistaken for mediation, and force cannot replace justice.
According to the Mamprugu Traditional Council, the use of arbitrary arrests, intimidation, killings and the deployment of state security forces is not only unlawful but dangerously counterproductive, deepening fear and mistrust in communities already affected by long-standing disputes.
The council further reminded the government that the arrest, detention or removal of the Bawku Naaba constitutes a direct violation of the 1992 Constitution. It insisted that the chieftaincy status of Naa Sheriga Alhaji Seidu Abagre remains intact and cannot be extinguished or diminished through arrest or state action.
The constitution, the council noted, guarantees the institution of chieftaincy and forbids any person or authority from conferring, withdrawing or altering the recognition of a chief outside the customs and traditions of the relevant area.
The Mamprugu Traditional Council said it was particularly disturbed by the government’s explanation that the action was taken based on recommendations from the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II mediation report on the Bawku matter, insisting that this justification does not override constitutional and customary law.
The statement ends with a call for restraint, respect for the rule of law, and genuine dialogue, warning that continued heavy-handed actions risk worsening tensions rather than bringing lasting peace to Bawku and its surrounding communities.

Dear Dr Justice Srem-Sai,
I write to you with deep respect, following a recent story attributed to you in which you reaffirmed the state’s commitment to protecting journalists, punishing perpetrators of attacks against them, and compensating those harmed in the line of duty. Your words were reassuring and firmly rooted in the Constitution, which recognises the indispensable role journalists play in Ghana’s democracy.
As a journalist myself, your assurance immediately brought to mind one unresolved and deeply painful case — that of my colleague, Latif Iddrisu of JoyNews.
In March 2018, Latif was brutally assaulted by uniformed police officers at the CID Headquarters while carrying out his professional duty of reporting on the detention of Koku Anyidoho. That assault left him with a fractured skull and a traumatic brain injury, the effects of which he continues to endure nearly eight years on.
This is not speculation. It is a lived reality.
Latif has spent no less than $50,000 on medical care in Ghana and in California, USA, where he continues to undergo therapy. These costs have been covered through personal savings, the support of family, friends, benefactors, and the Multimedia Group. Today, he remains indebted to the Loma Linda University Medical Center in excess of $26,000, with an additional ambulance bill of about $700, excluding the cost of ongoing treatment.

Legally, the matter remains unresolved. The suit against the Police was filed in 2019 and, seven years on, is still before the courts after passing through three judges. Even more concerning is that the Police Intelligence and Professional Standards (PIPS) recommended compensation, and the Police administration initially pledged to pay. Yet, to date, no compensation has been made.
Several petitions have been submitted to the Office of the Attorney General, including one from His Eminence the National Chief Imam, and others from Martin Luther Kpebu Esq, Dr Kenneth Ashigbey, Professor Audrey Gadzekpo, Anas Aremeyaw Anas, and other respected citizens. Professional bodies such as the Ghana Journalists Association have also consistently appealed for redress. Regrettably, these efforts have not yet yielded closure or relief.
Dr Srem-Sai, I raise this matter with humility and respect, not as a demand, but as an earnest appeal. If the state’s promise to journalists is to be demonstrated in practical terms, this case presents a clear and compelling opportunity to do so.
This is not about sympathy. It is about constitutional responsibility, press freedom, and state accountability. It is about assuring journalists that when they are harmed in service to the public, the state will not look away.
Latif Iddrisu survived a near-death experience in the line of duty. He seeks justice, compensation, and closure, not charity, but the fulfilment of a responsibility already acknowledged by the state.
As you rightly stated at the Ghana Journalists Association Dinner Night on December 23, 2025.
“We will not harm journalists. We will not allow anyone else to harm them. We will ensure perpetrators are punished, and we will compensate any journalist who suffers harm in the line of duty.”
Dr Justice Srem-Sai, this moment offers an opportunity to translate that promise into action, and to set a precedent that will strengthen press freedom and restore faith in the state’s commitment to protect journalists.

Thousands of music fans thronged the Accra Sports Stadium last Friday for the GT Muzik Concert, where leading artistes from Ghana and Nigeria delivered back-to-back performances that kept the crowd entertained deep into the wee hours of the following day.
Although the concert started later than scheduled, the delay did not dampen the mood of patrons as excitement continued to build inside the stadium.

The Government and the Hospital Pharmacists Association of Ghana (GHOSPA) have issued a public warning against excessive alcohol consumption and drug abuse during the Christmas season, cautioning that such practices pose serious health risks.
According to the Association, the festive period often comes with an increased tendency for people to abuse alcohol and misuse medications, driven by celebrations and social gatherings.
GHOSPA says this trend can lead to severe health complications if not checked.
Speaking to Channel One News on Friday December 26, President of the Association, Dr. Emmanuel Owiafe, urged the public to exercise restraint and be mindful of the impact of alcohol and drugs on the body.

A Ghanaian delegation made up of family members, friends, business associates and staff of the Executive Chairman and President of Sentuo Group in Ghana, Mr Xu Ningquan, has accompanied him to China to attend the wedding ceremony of his daughter.
The delegation showcased Ghana’s rich cultural heritage throughout the ceremony, highlighting the strong personal and professional ties Mr Ningquan has built with Ghana over the years.
Also in attendance was a delegation from the Fujian Association, an organisation of Chinese businesspeople based in Ghana. The wedding ceremony, which took place in Changle, Fuzhou, in China’s Fujian Province, was described as one of the high-profile society events in the area.
The visit, which doubles as a two-week vacation for members of the Ghanaian delegation, will also include tours of several popular tourist destinations across China.
Speaking on the significance of the gesture, a close friend and business associate, Dr Mohamed Raii, described Mr Ningquan’s decision to sponsor his Ghanaian family and friends to China for his daughter’s wedding as thoughtful and symbolic of his deep connection to Ghana.
“Mr Ningquan has made Ghana his home and acknowledges that much of his business success is owed to the support he has received from staff, friends and business associates in Ghana, whom he now considers family,” Dr Raii said.
He added that Mr Ningquan’s decision to share such a significant family milestone with members of his Ghanaian community reflected how deeply rooted his affection for the country had become.
“For many of us who travelled from our countries of birth to Ghana, our achievements there have been a source of pride and loyalty. Whenever we can, we want to share that story and what Ghana has enabled us to achieve,” he noted.
Dr Raii further said the gesture demonstrated a love for Ghana that went beyond sentiment, describing it as a sense of belonging that had translated into tangible actions aimed at the country’s advancement and progress.
He congratulated Mr Ningquan on the successful wedding ceremony of his daughter, saying he deserved all the joy and pride that accompanied such an important family milestone.
Police in the Volta Region have arrested 10 suspects in connection with the shooting incident at the Ho Central Mosque that left several people injured.
The arrests mark a major step in ongoing investigations into the violent attack, which occurred amid heightened tensions at the mosque on the morning of Friday, December 26.
Speaking to Citi News, the Volta Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Chief Inspector Francis Gomado, confirmed that all 10 suspects are currently in police custody, assisting with investigations.
Chief Inspector Gomado explained that although the suspects arrested are helping police with their inquiries, investigations remain active as some individuals believed to have played key roles in the attack fled the scene in a pickup vehicle.
He noted that efforts are underway to locate and arrest them to complete the probe.
Police have also begun examining the broader circumstances surrounding the shooting, including a long-standing leadership dispute within the mosque, which investigators believe may have contributed to the violence.
Assuring residents of calm, Chief Inspector Gomado said the situation in Ho is under control, with police working closely with other security agencies to maintain peace and prevent any further disturbances.
He urged the Muslim community and the general public to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement as investigations continue.
“10 persons have so far been arrested in connection with the attack, while those who arrived in a pickup vehicle fled the scene. Efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest the remaining suspects to assist with police investigations.
“The 10 individuals arrested are currently in police custody. We urge the Muslim community to remain calm and allow the police to handle the matter,” he said.

A communication team member of the ruling National Democratic Congress, Japhet Festus Gbede has strongly condemned the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) recent criticisms of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Communications Director, who doubles as the CEO of Goldbod, Sammy Gyamfi, describing them as a display of “economic amnesia, intellectual bankruptcy, and political desperation.”
In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, Gbede dismissed the NPP’s claims regarding the alleged $214 million GoldBod loss as “laughably incompetent, flagrantly misleading, and absurdly shallow.”
According to him, the opposition party’s characterisation of valuation adjustments as a “loss” shows a fundamental misunderstanding of sovereign financial management.
“Calling valuation adjustments a ‘loss’ is clueless, reckless, and embarrassingly misinformed, a spectacle that insults the intelligence of every Ghanaian,” the statement reads.
Gbede added that the attacks on Sammy Gyamfi are politically motivated and rooted in envy and desperation rather than fact or principle.
He did not spare the NPP from criticism, highlighting what he called the party’s disastrous economic record.
“This is the same NPP that supervised the most catastrophic economic mismanagement in Ghana’s history, ballooned public debt to obscene levels, collapsed the cedi, strangled businesses, destroyed livelihoods, and finally dragged a proud nation to the IMF in humiliation,” Gbede stated.
The NDC communicator further argued that the NPP lacks moral authority and credibility to lecture anyone on governance, accountability, or economic management.
He described their sudden focus on fiscal prudence as “convenient, insincere, and utterly fraudulent,” pointing out that the party had previously presided over failed programs, reckless borrowing, and policy confusion.
Gbede concluded by asserting that Ghanaians deserve serious opposition that values intelligence, integrity, and honesty, rather than “recycled propaganda from those who nearly wrecked the republic.”

The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, was also in attendance, alongside a representative of the Tuareg Chief in Ghana and other dignitaries.
Several institutions and groups under the Manhyia umbrella also paid homage to Otumfuo Osei-Tutu II. These included staff of Opemsuo Radio, Bodukwan Multi Fruit Processing Factory, the Otumfuo Osei-Tutu II Foundation, the Manhyia Palace Museum, Asante Kotoko Sporting Club, the Manhyia Land Secretariat, the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs, and the Manhyia Police Division.

A drone attack killed two Chadian soldiers at a military camp near the Sudan border before dawn on Friday, local authorities and a security source said, adding it was not immediately clear who was behind the strike.
Two people were killed and one seriously injured in the attack on the border town of Tine, said Hamit Hassan, prefect of the department that includes Tine. He said he had no information on who was responsible.
A Chadian military intelligence officer told Reuters the drone came from Sudan but it was unclear whether it was launched by the country’s army or paramilitary Rapid Support Force.
“We are still in the process of confirming the origin of this drone. If it is a Sudanese military drone, we will exercise our right to retaliate,” the officer, who asked not to be named because he wasn’t authorized to speak on the record, told Reuters.
“The air force base in (the eastern city) Abeche is already on high alert, and ground reinforcements are already in Tine.”
Sudan’s army and the RSF did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Tine serves as a transit camp for Sudanese refugees who later move on to safer camps away from the border, though humanitarian sources say a lack of funds to provide water, sanitation, and shelter at inland camps has slowed relocation efforts.
More than 12 million people have already been displaced by the ongoing war in Sudan, according to the International Rescue Committee (IRC).

The Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, has commented on the appointment of Randy Abbey as Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), highlighting the difficult circumstances surrounding the role.
Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on December 24, 2025, Pratt recalled his initial reaction when Abbey informed him of his decision to accept the COCOBOD leadership position.
“When Randy was appointed as Chief Executive of COCOBOD, he told me, and I said, ‘Randy, what are you going to do there? You are making a significant contribution as a media person and so on. Why are you going there? What is the motivation?’ And so yesterday, I felt vindicated,” Pratt said.
His remarks followed Abbey’s public defence of COCOBOD’s recent decision to suspend cocoa road projects nationwide, citing the board’s heavy financial burden.
According to Abbey, COCOBOD signed cocoa road contracts worth GH¢26 billion.
He revealed that in some years, particularly between 2018 and 2019, the Public Procurement Regulatory Commission (PPRC) made no allocation for road projects, yet COCOBOD proceeded to award contracts valued at GH¢220 million and US$99 million.
He noted that the situation deteriorated further between 2019 and 2020, when additional contracts worth GH¢231 million and US$1.157 billion were approved, again without budgetary provision.

“So, within a space of three years, COCOBOD awarded road contracts valued at about GH¢21.5 billion. The question is: how were these contracts going to be paid for based on COCOBOD’s revenue? This is the problem,” Abbey stated.
He explained that the unfunded contracts have worsened COCOBOD’s financial challenges, contributing to losses from rollover arrangements and a growing debt stock estimated at GH¢33 billion.

Addressing the 11th Session of the Conference of States Parties (CoSP 11) to the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC), Speaker Bagbin announced that Ghana, working in partnership with Norway, Albania and Mongolia, successfully led negotiations for the first-ever UNCAC resolution on transparency in political party financing, election campaigns and candidatures for public office.
The resolution, adopted by consensus, affirms citizens’ right to know who funds political activity and marks a significant step toward curbing corruption at its political roots.
Describing corruption as both a constitutional issue and a shared national responsibility, the Speaker said Ghana’s anti-corruption strategy is driven by strong political leadership, preventive reforms, asset recovery and robust institutions.
He pointed to the National Anti-Corruption Action Plan (NACAP) as the backbone of the country’s efforts, complemented by reforms in public procurement, the digitalisation of public financial management systems and enhanced oversight mechanisms.
Speaker Bagbin further highlighted the role of state institutions such as the Office of the Special Prosecutor and the Economic and Organised Crime Office in strengthening asset recovery and accountability, while calling for deeper international cooperation to address cross-border corruption.
On prevention, which he described as central to Ghana’s approach, the Speaker said corruption must be tackled at its source by promoting ethical values, closing systemic loopholes and limiting opportunities for abuse of power.
He noted that ongoing reforms in the public service, procurement and financial management, alongside expanded citizen participation, are aligned with the 2025 Code of Conduct for Government Officials.
Supporting Ghana’s delegation, the Chief Justice, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, acknowledged progress under NACAP but cautioned that challenges remain in translating national reforms into tangible impact at the local level.
He stressed the importance of evidence-based policymaking and sustained international collaboration to consolidate gains.
Ghana’s Ambassador to the United Nations in Vienna, Matilda Alomatu Osei-Agyeman, also underscored the benefits Ghana has derived from UNODC technical assistance, particularly in legal reforms, asset recovery and the evaluation of anti-corruption strategies, and appealed for expanded support for developing countries.

Christmas Festivities: Avenor traders, buyers speak on livestock sales
By publicly cooperating with the United States on Christmas Day airstrikes, Nigeria’s government may have averted humiliating unilateral military action threatened a month ago by President Donald Trump.
But security experts say it is unclear whether such strikes can do much to hinder Islamist militants who have long menaced communities in the area.
Trump announced on Truth Social on Thursday that U.S. forces had launched a strike against Islamic State militants in northwest Nigeria at the request of Nigeria’s government.
Local media reported loud explosions in the village of Jabo in the evening of Christmas Day. Reuters has not been able to confirm whether there were casualties.
Abuja confirmed it had approved the operation. Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar said on Friday Nigeria had acted jointly with the U.S., but not targeting any specific religion.
“Nigeria is a multi-religious country, and we’re working with partners like the U.S. to fight terrorism and protect lives and property,” Tuggar told Nigeria’s Channels Television.
TRUMP THREATENS ACTION TO PROTECT CHRISTIANS
Nigeria’s population of over 230 million people is roughly evenly divided among Christians, who predominate in the south, and Muslims who predominate in the north.
Last month, Trump threatened to order his forces to take military action in Nigeria unless the authorities there acted to stop what he described as the persecution of Christians.
While Nigeria has had persistent security challenges, including violence and kidnappings by Islamist insurgents in the north, it strongly denies that Christians are subjected to systematic persecution.
Its government responded to Trump’s threat by saying it intended to work with Washington against militants, while rejecting U.S. language that suggested Christians were in particular peril.
“After Trump threatened to come guns-blazing in Nigeria, we saw a Nigerian delegation visit the U.S.,” Kabir Adamu, managing director of Abuja-based Beacon Security and Intelligence Limited, told Reuters.
“The Attorney General was involved, and agreements were signed. Then we learned of U.S. surveillance missions mapping terrorist locations.”
Participating in the strikes could raise a risk that the government could be perceived as endorsing Trump’s language on wider sectarian strife, a sensitive issue throughout Nigeria’s history.
“Trump is pandering to domestic evangelical Christian objectives with his ‘Christian genocide’ narrative,” Adamu said.
The northwestern area where Thursday’s airstrikes took place has been plagued since 2024 by increasing violence from members of the Lakurawa sect, a strict Sunni Islamist movement that claims affiliation with the Islamic State group.
Formed as a vigilante outfit, the group evolved into a jihadist movement enforcing strict Islamist rule across hundreds of villages in the area. Nigeria declared the group a terrorist organisation early this year.
“It’s very likely this is the group Trump referred to when mentioning U.S. military strikes in Nigeria,” said Confidence MacHarry, senior analyst at Lagos-based SBM Intelligence. “They’ve also been linked to widespread cattle theft, with most of the stolen animals ending up in markets along the Nigeria-Niger border.”
But Adamu questioned whether the strikes would do much to counter the insurgents, noting that the particular village hit was not previously known for harbouring militants.
“We were told the Nigerian government okayed the attack, but why Jabo when there is no record of any group there?” he said.

A communication team member of the ruling National Democratic Congress, Japhet Festus Gbede has strongly condemned the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) recent criticisms of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Communications Director, who doubles as the CEO of Goldbod, Sammy Gyamfi, describing them as a display of “economic amnesia, intellectual bankruptcy, and political desperation.”
In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, Gbede dismissed the NPP’s claims regarding the alleged $214 million GoldBod loss as “laughably incompetent, flagrantly misleading, and absurdly shallow.”
According to him, the opposition party’s characterisation of valuation adjustments as a “loss” shows a fundamental misunderstanding of sovereign financial management.
“Calling valuation adjustments a ‘loss’ is clueless, reckless, and embarrassingly misinformed, a spectacle that insults the intelligence of every Ghanaian,” the statement reads.
Gbede added that the attacks on Sammy Gyamfi are politically motivated and rooted in envy and desperation rather than fact or principle.
He did not spare the NPP from criticism, highlighting what he called the party’s disastrous economic record.
“This is the same NPP that supervised the most catastrophic economic mismanagement in Ghana’s history, ballooned public debt to obscene levels, collapsed the cedi, strangled businesses, destroyed livelihoods, and finally dragged a proud nation to the IMF in humiliation,” Gbede stated.
The NDC communicator further argued that the NPP lacks moral authority and credibility to lecture anyone on governance, accountability, or economic management.
He described their sudden focus on fiscal prudence as “convenient, insincere, and utterly fraudulent,” pointing out that the party had previously presided over failed programs, reckless borrowing, and policy confusion.
Gbede concluded by asserting that Ghanaians deserve serious opposition that values intelligence, integrity, and honesty, rather than “recycled propaganda from those who nearly wrecked the republic.”

The Bank of Ghana has disclosed that its international reserves could exceed $13 billion by the end of 2025.
According to the central bank, the projection is based on data as of mid-December 2025 and is expected to boost investor and donor confidence.
The Bank of Ghana stated that, as of the end of October 2025, Ghana’s international reserves stood at $11.4 billion, up from $7.4 billion in October 2024, according to its November Economic and Financial Data.
“Tentative data from the Bank of Ghana (BoG) as of mid-December 2025 suggest that international reserves could exceed US$13 billion by the end of 2025, contributing to rising confidence in the economy,” the BoG said in a statement issued on December 25, 2025.

Violence disrupted prayers at the Ho Central Mosque
At least seven Muslims sustained varying degrees of injuries and are currently receiving treatment at different hospitals in Ho, the Volta Regional capital, following a shooting that disrupted Jummah prayers on Friday, December 26, 2025.
According to multiple reports online, the incident occurred around 9:00 a.m. when the newly installed Chief Imam arrived at the Ho Central Mosque to lead the day’s prayers.
“At least seven people have been injured after five masked men opened fire at the Ho Central Mosque in the Volta Region. The incident occurred as worshippers were preparing for Friday Jumu’ah prayers, according to eyewitnesses. Victims sustained gunshot injuries and were rushed to nearby health facilities for treatment,” a post shared on X by user Elorm Hood on December 26, 2025, stated.

Eyewitnesses said the violence erupted as supporters of Alhaji Alfa Anas clashed with armed men who were allegedly providing security for the new Chief Imam.
For more than a decade, two factions, led by Alhaji Alfa Anas and the newly appointed Imam, have been at odds over who holds the legitimate position of regional Chief Imam. Friday’s incident adds to a series of violent clashes in recent times.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Export–Import Bank (Ghana EXIM Bank), Mr Sylvester Mensah, says the Bank has rolled out a comprehensive five-year export-led growth strategy aimed at driving trade expansion, strengthening domestic value chains and repositioning the institution as a disciplined development finance engine for national growth.
Addressing Ghanaian journalists at the Bank’s end-of-year gathering on Tuesday, December 23, Mr Mensah provided a detailed account of the state of the Bank when the new administration assumed office and outlined the reset underway to restore confidence, improve governance and deliver measurable economic impact.
He disclosed that as of December 31, 2024, Ghana EXIM Bank was grappling with serious structural and operational challenges, including high inflationary pressures, exchange rate volatility and weak macroeconomic conditions, which had placed significant strain on its balance sheet.
These difficulties, he said, were worsened by what he described as “dysfunctional management decisions,” leading to elevated risk exposures, weak internal controls and high levels of non-performing loans (NPLs).
According to Mr Mensah, the Bank’s gross loan portfolio stood at about GH¢1.5 billion, with severe concentration risk. Thirty borrowers alone accounted for nearly 80 per cent of total NPLs. Of these, 18 borrowers were fully disbursed but had refused to repay, while 12 were partially disbursed.
He attributed the situation to weak collateral arrangements, breaches of loan terms and poor repayment discipline, noting that the impact of EXIM financing had been significantly eroded by weak execution rather than a lack of mandate.
“The core challenge was not the absence of a mandate, but weak execution,” he stated.
To address these issues, Mr Mensah said management introduced a Reset Agenda to reposition Ghana EXIM Bank as a focused, disciplined and impact-driven development finance institution. The reset, he explained, seeks to strengthen governance, improve loan quality, fix legacy weaknesses and align the Bank with Ghana’s national economic priorities.
The Reset Agenda is anchored on Ghana’s Export-Led Growth Strategy for the period 2025–2030, which provides the framework for the Bank’s newly developed five-year strategic plan.
As part of the strategic refocus, the CEO said Ghana EXIM Bank has narrowed its lending priorities to high-impact sectors critical to import substitution, export growth and job creation. These include rice, poultry, apparel and selected non-traditional exports such as oil palm, cashew, shea and cocoa processing.
He noted that the Bank has moved away from ad-hoc lending and is now guided by data, sector studies and international best practices, with a strong emphasis on discipline in execution.
“Lending is now aligned with sector calendars, and funds are released in line with production cycles to ensure better utilisation, stronger repayment performance and improved sustainability,” Mr Mensah explained.
On legacy loans, he said the Bank has introduced new policy guidelines and a Code of Ethics, restructured partially disbursed facilities, pursued recovery of fully disbursed loans through legal means, and referred criminal matters to relevant state agencies where necessary. Senior staff have also been appointed to the boards of legacy loan companies to strengthen oversight.
Reviewing progress made in 2025, Mr Mensah said management and operational reforms had been rolled out, including organisational restructuring, stronger internal controls and the establishment of Sustainability and Strategic Impact Departments to ensure value-for-money and environmental, social and governance (ESG) compliance.
Cost-discipline measures were also introduced, including a contributory staff welfare scheme and the migration of vehicle loan financing to a commercial banking arrangement, freeing resources to support productive enterprises.
Looking ahead, the CEO said that from 2026, Ghana EXIM Bank expects stronger governance and policy alignment through deeper collaboration with the Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Ghana, as well as legal reforms to place the Bank under dual oversight by the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry and the Ministry of Finance.
Key targets under the five-year export-led growth strategy include reducing rice and poultry imports by 40 to 50 per cent within five years, achieving more than 50 per cent growth in domestic food production, and generating over US$1 billion annually in agro-export earnings from non-traditional exports.
The strategy is also expected to create more than 100,000 jobs across agribusiness, agro-processing, rice, poultry and garment value chains, improve rural incomes, boost foreign exchange inflows and gradually reduce non-performing loans.
Mr Mensah concluded that through the Reset Agenda, Ghana EXIM Bank is now better positioned to strengthen SMEs, boost exports and deliver lasting national economic impact.
“These efforts will enhance food security, reduce food inflation, improve foreign exchange inflows to support cedi stability, and strengthen Ghana’s global competitiveness,” he said.

China unveiled three venture capital funds on Friday, December 26, to invest in advanced technology sectors as Beijing intensifies its push for technological self-reliance. State broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV) reported that each fund exceeds 50 billion yuan, bringing total planned capital to more than 150 billion yuan (approximately $21.4 billion).
The funds will target early stage startups valued below 500 million yuan, with individual investments capped at 50 million yuan. This structure aims to spread support across multiple emerging companies rather than concentrating resources in a few large ventures.
Priority sectors include integrated circuits, quantum technology, biomedicine, brain computer interfaces, aerospace and other strategically important technologies. The initiative deliberately excludes “soft” technologies such as consumer internet services, marking a clear shift in government investment priorities.
An official speaking on Friday confirmed the investment parameters, emphasizing the focus on early stage companies operating in capital intensive fields. These sectors typically face difficulty attracting private funding due to high risk profiles and extended development cycles.
The launch reflects Beijing’s response to United States led export controls and growing competition in advanced technologies. China seeks to strengthen domestic innovation in areas critical to national security, industrial upgrading and long term economic resilience.
Hard technology refers to sectors requiring substantial research and development investment, advanced manufacturing capabilities and extended timelines before commercialization. Semiconductors represent a prime example, contrasting sharply with internet platforms that dominated Chinese venture capital over the past decade.

The exchange rate stands at approximately 7.0070 Chinese yuan per United States dollar, making the total commitment roughly $21.4 billion across the three funds. This substantial allocation demonstrates the priority leadership places on achieving technological self sufficiency.
According to INTERPOL, hackers reportedly stole over $100,000 from a Ghanaian financial institution
INTERPOL has disclosed that a ransomware attack on a Ghanaian financial institution led to the theft of about US$120,000, highlighting the growing financial toll cybercrime is taking on banks and other financial institutions across the continent.
The incident came to light during Operation Sentinel, a coordinated cybercrime operation carried out in 19 African countries.
According to INTERPOL, the attackers encrypted an estimated 100 terabytes of data, severely disrupting operations and cutting off access to critical systems.
Although Ghanaian authorities later managed to recover nearly 30 terabytes of data through advanced malware analysis, the financial loss underscored how lucrative such attacks have become for cybercriminals.

The Ghana case formed part of a wider crackdown that revealed the scale of losses suffered by financial institutions and businesses across Africa.
INTERPOL said total losses linked to the investigated cases exceeded US$21 million, with hackers exploiting ransomware, business email compromise, and digital extortion schemes.
INTERPOL’s Director of Cybercrime, Neal Jetton, warned that attackers are increasingly targeting sectors that hold large volumes of sensitive data and financial assets.
He said the outcomes of Operation Sentinel demonstrate both the scale of the threat and the importance of coordinated responses.
“The scale and sophistication of cyberattacks across Africa are accelerating, especially against critical sectors like finance and energy. The outcomes from Operation Sentinel reflect the commitment of African law enforcement agencies, working in close coordination with international partners,” he said.
According to the report, 574 arrests have been made, and about US$3 million has been recovered.

Both Aduana Fc and Berekum Chelsea received medals and cash prizes of GH₵40,000 each as appearance fees.
The tournament was organised by Ghana Football League Clubs Association (GHALCA) in collaboration with the Bono Regional Coordinating Council and Bono Regional Football Association (BARFA). Earlier the day, BA United had beaten Tano Bofoakwa 2-0 to win the curtain raiser cup for the tournament.
The Bono Minister’s maiden cup was a football tournament aimed at promoting sports development, unity, and community bonds in the Bono Region.
The tournament featured top teams, including Aduana FC and Berekum Chelsea, who faced off on December 24, 2025, at the Nana Agyeman Badu Park in Dormaa Ahenkro.
According to the Bono Regional Minister, Joseph Addae Akwaboa, the cup symbolizes discipline, teamwork, and values essential for building strong communities and a progressive region.

Officials count votes at a polling station in Yopougon as polls close during the elections
In Ivory Coast, the opposition PDCI-RDA is accusing supporters of the ruling RHDP of carrying out a fraudulent collection of voters’ personal data ahead of legislative elections.
According to the party, individuals claiming to belong to the RHDP have been gathering names, phone numbers, voter card details, and polling station information. As part of heightened security measures during the festive season, the Greater Accra Regional Police Command has arrested 101 suspects in a series of targeted operations across key areas including Kwame Nkrumah Circle, Nungua, Adabraka, Achimota, East Legon, and Railways.
The initiative, branded the “Christmas Special Operations,” focused on curbing criminal activities and ensuring public safety during one of the busiest times of the year.
According to the police, the operations targeted armed robbers, pickpockets, and other individuals involved in activities that pose a threat to residents and visitors.
Authorities confirmed that the arrested individuals are in police custody, and investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of their involvement in criminal networks. The Greater Accra Regional Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law and order and ensuring that the city is safe for both citizens and visitors during Christmas and the New Year celebrations.
