Wontumi Detention: I will join NPP naked demo because I’ll have a lot to watch

The Member of Parliament for Ada, Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe-Ghansah The Member of Parliament for Ada, Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe-Ghansah

The Member of Parliament for Ada, Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe-Ghansah, has expressed her willingness to happily join a naked demonstration proposed by the former Greater Accra Regional Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over the continued detention of its Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

Moses Abor, had earlier warned that he might lead a naked demonstration to express the party’s displeasure and compel the John Mahama administration to release Chairman Wontumi, who is under investigation for serious criminal charges, including fraud and money laundering.

Abor joined a protest by NPP Members of Parliament and party supporters at the premises of EOCO on Thursday, May 29. 2025, over Wontumi’s detention beyond the constitutionally permitted 48-hour limit.

“We are telling the President of the Republic he has only two and a half years left, because in the last year, he cannot campaign. We don’t want to advise ourselves. I earlier told my General Secretary that if care is not taken, we will advise ourselves and hit the streets. If care is not taken, we are going to organise a naked demonstration in this country, because what is going on is not fair,” Abor stated.

However, speaking in an interview with Metro TV on Friday, May 30, 2025, it emerged that Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe-Ghansah motivation for joining the proposed demonstration was less about solidarity and more about personal amusement.

“They should just relax. I even heard they want to do a naked demo. For that one, I will join them — because if men are going to do a naked demo, it means there’ll be a lot of things to watch,” she said.

The First Deputy Majority Whip also called for calm and emphasized the responsibilities that come with holding public office.

“They should rather cease fire so we can all enjoy the peace we’re currently enjoying. If you want to work in a government institution, being invited to the Police Headquarters, EOCO, NIB, and the rest is part of the package. You want the benefits, but you don’t want to face the scrutiny.”

Parliament approves GHS10 billion for National Health Insurance Authority

0

Parliament of Ghana on Friday approved the 2025 formula for the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), allocating 10 billion Ghana Cedi to the Fund.

The NHIF provides financial backing for the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), a social intervention programme intended to provide access to healthcare for all Ghanaians.

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) is the government agency that manages the NHIF and ensures that the citizens are adequately catered for under the NHIS.

The proposed formula for the disbursement of the Fund are as follows: 2025 claims of GHc6.5 billion (65.1%), National Health Insurance Authority’s operational expenses of GHc1.2 billion (12.3%), support to the National Health Insurance Scheme District offices amounting to GHc124 million (1.2%) and GH¢984 million allocated to the Ministry of Health, representing 9.8 per cent.

Addressing the media in Parliament House in Accra on Friday, Mr Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Minister of Health, said in 2024, six billion Ghana cedi was allocated to the NHIF, therefore allocating GH¢10 billion to the Fund this year would witness an increase in resource allocation.

The Minister explained that due to the uncapping of the NHIF in the 2025 Budget, the excess funds would be directed to supporting primary healthcare, fill the revenue gap created by withdrawal of donor support to the health sector and other portions would go to support the Ghana Trust  Fund, otherwise known as ‘Mahama Care’.

Mr Akandoh indicated that beyond the aforementioned allocations, the NHIF would also allocate funds towards dialysis treatment under the NHIS.

The Mahama-led Government had also put in place a policy framework for dialysis treatment in the country, the Minister stated.

Mr Akandoh noted that available statistics showed 45 per cent of mortality in the country was as a result of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), therefore, the Mahama Care initiative would provide funding for chronic NCDs including stroke and kidney infections.

The National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) is funded through a combination of the National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL), Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) contributions, and returns on NHIF investments.

The NHIF ensures that the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) established by government in 2003 provide financial access to quality healthcare for Ghanaians.

Assin South MP breaks silence over threats after sponsoring anti-LGBT+ bill

Assin North MP, Rev Ntim Fordjour Assin North MP, Rev Ntim Fordjour

The Member of Parliament for Assin South, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, has revealed how some of his colleagues in Parliament attempted to dissuade him from sponsoring the controversial Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, also known as the Anti-LGBT+ Bill.

According to him, these colleagues urged him to withdraw his sponsorship after learning of threats of international sanctions planned by some foreign counterparts.

Speaking in an interview with media personality Kafui Dey, in a video shared on YouTube, Rev. Ntim Fordjour admitted that although he has faced some inconveniences due to his sponsorship of the bill, he remains undaunted and will continue to stand by his convictions.

“A lot of things I went through. Sometimes, my colleagues travel to other countries, and when they return, they are scared for me—because of the kinds of things said by foreign counterparts. Even though I am not present at those meetings, my name is mentioned. They come back and say, ‘Is it possible for you to reconsider your stance? Because if they carry out their threats, it will be terrible for you.’ But I say no. I am ready for whatever they will do.

“There have been many other inconveniences here and there, but if you are standing by your convictions, you must be prepared for inconveniences. If you are standing for the truth—standing for what is right and unconventional—you should expect the usual attacks. You need to be bold in this game if you stand for strong convictions,” Ntim Fordjour stated.

When asked if he ever felt that his support for the bill had put his life in danger, the politician and pastor responded in the affirmative.

“Oh yes, we got to that point. But you have to be bold and finish what you started.”

Rev. John Ntim Fordjour was one of the eight MPs who sponsored the previous anti-LGBTQ bill. Among the sponsors, he was the only MP from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), while the remaining seven were from the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Meanwhile, the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has announced that the controversial Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill—commonly referred to as the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill—is set to be introduced for its first reading during the second meeting of the Ninth Parliament.

The proposed legislation aims to criminalize LGBTQ+ activities in Ghana, as well as the promotion, advocacy, or funding of such activities.

Bagbin made the announcement during his opening remarks to mark the official commencement of Parliament’s second meeting.

“Three private members’ bills—the Property Rights of Spouses Bill 2025, the Constitution of the Republic of Ghana Amendment Bill 2025, and the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill 2025—have completed the processes as required by the Standing Orders and are expected to be presented for a first reading during the course of this meeting,” he stated.

The bill, which has generated intense national and international debate, was previously passed by the Eighth Parliament. However, it failed to receive presidential assent under former President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration and therefore did not become law.

With its reintroduction, the bill is expected to spark renewed discussions on human rights, constitutional freedoms, and Ghana’s cultural values.

Parliament is now poised to begin deliberations on the bill, which remains one of the most polarizing pieces of legislation in the country’s recent political history.

Autopsy confirms cause of nursing student who died in boyfriend’s room to be asthma

Gifty Okyere (right) died in the room of her boyfriend Edmond Ayomah Gifty Okyere (right) died in the room of her boyfriend Edmond Ayomah

An autopsy has confirmed that Gifty Okyere, a 28-year-old final-year nursing student at Sunyani Nursing and Midwifery Training College, died of an acute asthma attack in her boyfriend’s room, ruling out foul play.

According to a report by kessbenonline.com, preliminary accounts indicate that Okyere began experiencing breathing difficulties while in the room of her boyfriend, Edmond Ayomah, on May 27, 2025.

Despite efforts to assist her, she lost consciousness before emergency help could arrive.

Ayomah subsequently turned himself in to the local police, cooperating fully with authorities during the investigation.

The Ghana Police Service in Jinjini confirmed that a full autopsy conducted by the regional pathologist explicitly stated that Okyere died due to an acute asthma attack, with no signs of physical trauma or poisoning.

Edmond Ayomah, who had been under investigation, remains uncharged and has reportedly returned to his family as the official investigations draw to a close.

The confirmation of a natural cause of death has alleviated concerns of foul play, though the tragedy continues to resonate with many in Jinjini and beyond.

Gifty Okyere, described as a promising young woman, is set to be laid to rest, with the community mourning the loss of a life cut short.

This case has been closely followed since initial reports emerged, with speculations indicating foul play due to the circumstances of Gifty’s death.

Earlier reports had suggested that Gifty died from complications while attempting to commit abortion in the room of her boyfriend.

One more suspect arrested and remanded

0

A 41-year-old man, nabbed in connection with 32 vacuum-sealed plant-like substances suspected to be cannabis, has appeared before an Accra Circuit Court.

Joey Mclaren Hammond faces charges of conspiracy to commit a crime, namely the exportation of narcotic drugs without a licence issued by the minister responsible for health, and two counts of unlawful possession or control of narcotic drugs without lawful authority.

Hammond’s plea was not taken by the court.

Browne-Frater Chyna Jade, a 22-year-old British national, is the first suspect, who had earlier been remanded by another circuit court.

The prosecution, led by Hilda Craig, Principal State Attorney, requested that the court remand Hammond.

Defence counsel opposed the prosecution’s request, arguing that Hammond should be granted bail.

The trial judge, Mr. Isaac Addo, held that, given the nature of the accusations against Hammond and the severity of the punishment, he would deny bail and remanded Hammond into Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) custody to reappear on June 16, 2025.

The facts before the court are that witnesses are authorised officers of NACOC stationed at Terminal Three of Kotoka International Airport in Accra.

The first suspect, Browne-Frater Chyna Jade, is a 22-year-old British national holding a United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland passport.

Jade was scheduled to travel on British Airways flight BA 2068 from Accra to London.

The second suspect, Joey Mclaren Hammond, is a Ghanaian businessman residing in East Legon, Accra.

NACOC received intelligence from its foreign counterparts concerning a drug trafficking syndicate engaged in smuggling Thai-grown and processed cannabis into the United Kingdom.

As a result, the first suspect, Jade, became a person of interest and was subsequently placed on the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) Stop List.

On May 18, 2025, at about 6:40 p.m., GIS officials apprehended the first suspect and handed her over to NACOC officers at the Departure Hall of the airport.

During an initial interrogation, she indicated that she had checked in one suitcase, the contents of which she claimed to be unaware of.

Acting on suspicion, NACOC officers traced the checked-in suitcase, which had already been loaded onto the aircraft, and had it offloaded.

Jade was then escorted to the NACOC office, where the suitcase, bearing a baggage tag in her name, was opened in her presence. Officers discovered thirty-two (32) vacuum-sealed slabs of a plant-like substance suspected to be narcotics. The total weight of the seized substance was approximately 17.92 kilograms, with an estimated street value of US$232,960.

A field test conducted on a sample of the substance yielded a positive result for delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary psychoactive component in cannabis.

Jade was arrested on suspicion of attempting to export narcotic drugs and was taken to NACOC Headquarters for further investigation.

During interrogation, Jade said she had been invited to Ghana by her boyfriend, known only as “Joey.”

She further claimed that, on the day of her departure, Joey had packed her suitcase in her absence.

When quizzed further about its contents, she was allegedly told it contained Kpoo Keke alcoholic drink, Alomo Bitters, and assorted spices.

She denied any knowledge of the narcotic substances discovered in her luggage.

Efforts were initiated to locate and apprehend the individual identified as “Joey” to assist with ongoing investigations.

The seized narcotic exhibits were sealed in the presence of the suspect and are to be forwarded to the Ghana Standards Authority for analysis.

On Monday, May 26, 2025, Joey, previously declared at large, was arrested and detained in lawful custody.

He was later identified as Joey Mclaren Hammond, who voluntarily presented himself to NACOC in the company of his counsel.

During an identification parade, Jade identified Hammond as the one who handed her the intercepted suitcase.

Hammond admitted to knowing Jade and briefly hosting her in Tse-Addo but claimed he had no further contact with her thereafter.

The same day, Hammond was arrested, and NACOC officers conducted a search at his residence in East Legon, leading to the recovery of assorted weapons, seven wraps of cannabis, and four (4) partly smoked pieces of cannabis from his bedroom.

A black Range Rover vehicle with registration number GE 1435-25 was also impounded.

During an on-the-spot interrogation, Hammond admitted to using cannabis for recreational purposes.

Investigations are ongoing.

Dunstan Guba represented Ghana and the Ghana Police Service Dunstan Guba represented Ghana and the Ghana Police Service

Corporal Dunstan Guba of the Ghana Police Service has secured a silver medal, finishing in 3rd place at the INTERPOL Digital Security Challenge 2025, held at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The intense three-day, non-stop Capture the Flag (CTF) competition brought together elite white-hat hackers from the law enforcement sector across over 60 countries.

Corporal Guba expressed his pride in representing Ghana and the Ghana Police Service, highlighting the opportunity to demonstrate the country’s offensive and defensive cyber capabilities in the fight against cybercrime on an international stage.

“I was honored to have represented Ghana and the Ghana Police Service and demonstrated our offensive and defensive cyber capabilities in fighting cybercrime on an international stage,” he wrote in a Facebook post.

The Digital Security Challenge, a prestigious event aimed at enhancing the skills of law enforcement personnel in digital forensics and cybersecurity, tested participants’ abilities in a simulated environment.

Corporal Guba’s achievement underscores Ghana’s growing proficiency in cybercrime prevention and response, aligning with the country’s efforts to strengthen its cyber security framework.

Ghana’s participation in such international forums is part of broader initiatives supported by global partnerships, including the Council of Europe’s Global Action on Cybercrime Extended (GLACY+) project.

The project has previously facilitated Ghana’s involvement in similar events, such as the 2024 Digital Security Challenge in Cebu, Philippines, where Ghanaian participants contributed to a team that placed 3rd.

Corporal Guba’s success at the 2025 challenge adds to Ghana’s track record in international cyber security competitions, reflecting the nation’s commitment to combating cyber threats.

The INTERPOL Digital Security Challenge continues to be a critical platform for fostering collaboration and skill development among global law enforcement agencies, with Ghana’s strong showing this year highlighting its emerging role in the global cyber security landscape.

Government to sanction telcos over poor services

0

The Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has issued a stark warning to all mobile network operators in the country to improve the quality of services by December 31, 2025, or face unprecedented financial penalties, with a substantial portion of these fines directly compensating affected customers.

The stern directive came during a high-level meeting on Friday, May 30, 2025, where the minister convened with the CEOs and technical teams of MTN, Telecel, and AT.

His message was unequivocal and emphasised that despite vast infrastructure and visible presence across the country, subscribers are enduring consistently poor service, particularly in rapidly expanding urban centres and crucial regional towns.

“We are not doing sentiments. We are doing engineering,” Mr. George asserted, emphasising an action-driven approach. “If you have infrastructure in place but your service is poor, we must begin to take regulatory action.”

The meeting featured a presentation by the National Communications Authority (NCA), based on a comprehensive assessment of 48 localities nationwide.

This study, prompted by a surge in public complaints, evaluated operators across four critical Key Performance Indicators (KPIs): 3G Coverage, Call Setup Time (CST), Mean Opinion Score (MOS) for call quality, and 3G Data Throughput.

The findings revealed alarming inconsistencies in service delivery across all three providers.

Mr. George, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, specifically cited examples from economically vital areas like Amasaman and East Legon, highlighting how, despite expanded coverage, the quality of service has sharply declined.

Parts of the capital, Accra, are experiencing frustrating network “blackouts” and substandard 4G performance.

The minister announced that a full nationwide test covering every district capital would be conducted by the NCA in the third quarter of 2025.

“On the basis of that result, if we don’t see improvements, we will have to start taking decisive action,” he warned.

In a potentially transformative policy, Mr. George disclosed that a portion of any fines imposed on defaulting telcos would directly benefit the public.

“About 40 per cent of any fines imposed on defaulting telcos would be returned to the affected consumers, either through bonus data or call time,” he revealed.

This mechanism is designed to ensure tangible compensation for subscribers experiencing poor service, moving beyond mere regulatory penalties.

Operators have been granted a strict 30-day window, expiring June 30, 2025, to complete the acceptance process for newly allocated spectrum.

The minister stressed that by the end of December, a demonstrable improvement in service quality, directly linked to this new spectrum, would be expected.

“We know you can’t complete upgrades in three months, but we must see that the process has begun. The Ghanaian people must feel the impact of the spectrum rollout by the end of this year,” he underscored.

The telecommunications executives, recognising the gravity of the situation, outlined significant measures to address the concerns.

MTN Ghana CEO, Stephen Blewett, announced a substantial $230 million investment in 2024, earmarked for bolstering network infrastructure and IT systems. He also disclosed plans to open 300 new franchise stores, specifically targeting underserved areas, and recruit 400 new front-facing staff with a dedicated GH₵ 25 million internal budget. Upcoming self-service options, including SIM swaps and PIN resets with robust identity verification, are also in the pipeline to combat fraud.

Telecel Ghana Chief Operating Officer, Mohamad Ghaddar, reiterated his company’s commitment to superior customer experience, emphasising continuous network optimisation.

While acknowledging receipt of some spectrum, he stressed the ongoing need for more to meet burgeoning demand.

Telecel is expanding its retail footprint, with over 400 shops currently operational and plans to add 100 more.

The company also highlighted its support services for persons with special needs and welcomed regulatory feedback.

AT CEO Leo Skarlatos acknowledged the public as the “ultimate stakeholder”.

He assured that AT is undergoing significant network improvements, which are anticipated to be “clearly visible by the first quarter of the following year.”

Skarlatos expressed confidence in the ongoing transformation and extended an open invitation for stakeholders to witness these enhancements firsthand early next year.

Beyond service quality, the minister also touched upon data pricing.

He recalled the establishment of a committee in February 2025 tasked with developing a strategic roadmap for gradual data cost reduction.

This approach aims to avoid market shocks, prioritising improvements in value (e.g., more data for the same price) rather than immediate, drastic price cuts, to protect investment planning and industry viability.

This bold stance by the Ministry of Communication signals a new era of stringent regulatory oversight, prioritising consumer experience and holding telcos accountable for the quality of services they provide in Ghana’s rapidly evolving digital landscape.

Why NIB denied Bawumia, NPP leaders access to detained Wontumi

A delegation NPP leaders led by Dr Bawumia were denied access to Chairman Wontumi A delegation NPP leaders led by Dr Bawumia were denied access to Chairman Wontumi

The National Investigation Bureau (NIB) denied former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and other New Patriotic Party (NPP) leaders access to the detained Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, citing the need for authorization from the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin disclosed this after a meeting with NIB officials at their Ridge office on Friday, May 30.

Dr Bawumia, Afenyo-Markin, and an entourage of NPP leaders had visited the NIB to check on Chairman Wontumi’s welfare, who has been in EOCO’s custody since Tuesday, May 27, 2025.

Afenyo-Markin revealed that NIB officials informed them that Chairman Wontumi was not at the Ridge premises but was being held at their Kawukudi office. The officials stated that access to Wontumi could only be granted upon authorization from EOCO.

“Well, all those arrangements were made, and upon getting here, they came to tell us a different story. We will keep to it, and I find it very worrying that in a country like Ghana, someone would demand GH₵50 million before they grant enquiry bail,” Afenyo-Markin said.

He expressed frustration, noting, “Not at all, he is nowhere to be found. They claim they could not bring him here, and he is still in the custody of NIB at their Kawukudi office. They claim until EOCO authorizes, we cannot see him.”

Afenyo-Markin also criticized the arrest of Chairman Wontumi as a “show of power” by the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), suggesting it was an attempt to assert dominance. “They just want to teach Wontumi where power lies,” he told journalists after the visit.

Dr Bawumia echoed concerns about the GH₵50 million bail condition imposed on Wontumi, questioning its feasibility.

“I don’t know how many people in Ghana have properties worth 50 million,” he said, believing the condition was designed to prevent Wontumi’s timely release.

He assured that the NPP would pursue legal avenues to ensure Wontumi’s release.

Chairman Wontumi was transferred from EOCO’s headquarters to the NIB office on Friday, May 30, as part of ongoing investigations into alleged criminal offenses, including fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.

Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem Sai has indicated that a second phase of the investigation links Wontumi to a wider international organized crime syndicate.

Parliament recommends ratification of WTO agreement on fisheries subsidies

The Committee on Food, Agriculture, and Cocoa Affairs and the Committee on Trade, Industry, and Tourism of Parliament have recommended that Ghana ratify the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies.

This move, according to the Committee, aims to promote sustainable marine resource management and curb harmful fisheries subsidies that contribute to overcapacity, overfishing, and Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing.

Moving the report of the Committee on the Floor of Parliament for the adoption of the House on Friday, Dr. Godfred Seidu Jasaw, Chairman of the Committee on Food, Agriculture, and Cocoa Affairs, said the Committee considered the Agreement a significant step in global efforts to curb harmful fisheries subsidies that contribute to overcapacity, overfishing, and IUU fishing, promoting sustainable marine resource management.

“Mr. Speaker, the ratification would also highlight Ghana’s commitment to global cooperation, aligning with its roles as host of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and as a founding member of the African Union (AU),” he said.

Dr. Jasaw noted that the implications of the ratification include enhancing measures against IUU fishing and other unsustainable fishing practices, improving data collection and reporting on fisheries indicators, increasing transparency among WTO members, and supporting global efforts to sustainably manage fisheries resources.

Other benefits he noted include fair trade practices in both domestic and international markets, contributing to job creation, poverty alleviation, national food security, and strong foreign exchange earnings.

Among the challenges and concerns enumerated in the Committee’s report were the potential impact on local fishing communities, particularly small-scale and artisanal fishers who rely on government support, such as subsidies for premix fuel, outboard motors, and fishing gear.

“There is a need for careful consideration of domestic implications and mitigating measures to protect vulnerable fishing communities,” the report said.

The Committee recommended that the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture finalise a new Fisheries Bill, which will incorporate the provisions of the WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies.

“The Committee will closely monitor the drafting and passage of the new legislation to ensure it reflects Ghana’s international commitments and the socio-economic realities of fishing communities,” the report said.

Some Members of Parliament (MPs) who contributed to the debate on the adoption of the Committee’s report called for sustainable practices, emphasizing environmentally friendly practices, reduction of plastic waste, and promotion of local materials for fishing gear.

Mr. Habib Iddrisu, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP for Tolon, seconding the motion, raised concerns about potential effects on fishermen’s livelihoods, with plans to mitigate adverse effects.

Mr. Murtala Mohammed, a National Democratic Congress MP for Tamale Central and the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, called for investment in infrastructure and equipment to support fishing communities, as well as improvements in working conditions and resources available to officials in these areas.

Madam Emelia Arthur, the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, said the WTO agreement prohibits subsidies to vessels engaged in IUU fishing, which is relevant to Ghana’s current “yellow card” status from the European Union.

She told Parliament that the expected outcomes of the ratification would include improved sustainability, efficiency, transparency, and cooperation among WTO members, potentially boosting Ghana’s fishing industry.

“Mr. Speaker, potential outcomes will include improved industry sustainability that will enhance measures against IUU fishing and unsustainable practices, economic benefits where fair trade practices and sustainable fishing may lead to economic gains, and increased transparency for better data collection and reporting among WTO members,” she said.

Government allocates GH₵22 million for forts and castles rehabilitation

The government has made available GH₵22 million for the rehabilitation of six forts and castles across the country.

The rehabilitation works will focus on repairing cracks and tears, reroofing, and transforming portions of the existing facilities into museums and tourism sites to tell the African story.

Mr. Kwesi Essel Blankson, the Executive Director of the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board, who led a delegation to Fort Orange in Sekondi and subsequently paid an introductory visit to the Mayor of STMA, Mr. Fredrick Faustinus Faidoo, said, “We hope to complete rehabilitation works on Fort Orange within a year.”

The project will preserve history, serve as a heritage site, and drive domestic tourism.

“This project focuses on protecting these historically significant structures, which played a role in the gold trade and later the slave trade,” he added.

Fort Orange in Sekondi is one of the six selected out of the 28 across various regions of Ghana, including the Volta, Greater Accra, Central, and Western Regions.

The contractor and consultant are already on site to commence the project, he added, and appealed to residents to keep the beachfront clean to attract tourists.

“After all is said and done, if the city is not clean, it will be very difficult to attract tourists because no tourist would want to spend time in a dirty environment.”

Mr. Fredrick Faustinus Faidoo, the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Chief Executive, assured the group of the assembly’s readiness to assist in executing the project.

Don’t wear party colours to National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving

Chairman of the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving Planning Committee, Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah Chairman of the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving Planning Committee, Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah

Mr. Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, the Chairman of the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving, has cautioned Ghanaians against wearing any political party attire to the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving.

He said the event is designed to promote unity, inclusiveness, and commitment to building a prosperous and peaceful Ghana for the next generation, rather than fostering political division.

“The attire must be white, celebratory, and feature national colours, but no party colours,” he stressed.

The Chairman of the Committee was speaking at the media launch of the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving in Accra, which will be held under the theme, “Reflect, Reset, and Renew for National Prosperity.”

The event, scheduled for July 1, 2025, is designed to bring together Christians, Muslims, and other religious groups to reflect, reset, and renew their commitment to national unity and prosperity.

The Christian segment of the day’s programme will be held at the forecourt of the State House in Accra from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM, followed by Muslim prayers at the National Mosque from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM.

Mr. Afriyie Ankrah said the institution of July 1 as a national day for prayer and thanksgiving was a bold and unifying decision that invites all and sundry, regardless of religion, ethnicity, or political affiliation, to gather around a single fire of purpose, gratitude, and hope.

“This is a sacred moment. We are called to reflect on where we’ve come from as a people—our triumphs, mistakes, resilience, and potential,” he said.

“We are challenged to reset, to abandon the culture of blame, greed, and apathy, and to embrace truth, discipline, and a shared sense of duty,” he added.

He said the event is a call to national humility, which transcends religious boundaries, adding, “Whether you are Christian, Muslim, or a practitioner of traditional beliefs, lift your prayers to your God and seek divine favour for Ghana.”

The Chairman of the Committee said that, though the practices may differ, the shared hope for a better Ghana unites all.

Mr. Afriyie Ankrah appealed to the media to lend their platforms to this not-for-profit, non-political cause, driven by patriotism.

“You are the loudspeakers of the nation; you shape the national conversation and influence hearts and minds daily. We are asking every media house, from radio to television, from print to online, to lend your platforms to this cause,” he said.

“Help us carry this message of hope, reflection, and renewal across every region and every home. Let July 1 not just be another date; let it be the beginning of a spiritual and moral revival in this land,” he stressed.

Media Foundation for West Africa trains journalists on illicit financial flows

Over 20 journalists were trained on illicit financial flows Over 20 journalists were trained on illicit financial flows

The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) has organised a two-day training on Illicit Financial Flows (IFFs) and Progressive Taxation for about 20 journalists in the Ashanti Region.

The training, with financial support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Denmark, is part of a strategic partnership initiative for Ghana and West Africa Project.

The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECO) defines IFFs as the illegal movement of money from one country to the other, mostly through corruption, tax evasion and money laundering.

Mr. Edward Cudjoe, the Ashanti Regional Director of the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO), highlighted how IFFs crippled the socio-economic development of a country, causing an increase in poverty, stunt economic growth and underfunded public services.

He mentioned the key drivers of IFFs as corruption in the public service, tax evasion and trade mispricing, environmental crime such as galamsey, money laundering and use of shell companies.

Although there are legal and institutional frameworks that regulate some economic and crime related activities, Mr Cudjoe said there were gaps in them which needed to be amended.

He noted that there were other activities which had no regulatory body such as Artisanal Mining and Virtual Assets Service Providers – allowing people to take advantage to engage in IFFs.

“The mining sector, particularly the artisanal and small-scale mining, is largely unsupervised and attractive to criminals. It contributes 31 per cent of total gold production and attracts 60 per cent of the country’s mining labour force,” he explained.

Mr. Cudjoe noted that to fight IFFs, countries must understand that people who engage in the illegal activity adopt a range of strategies, some of which are complex to bypass regulatory and legal frameworks of governments.

It is against this background that the European Union and Germany donated €70 million to the African Union as support to strengthen its capability to fight against IFFs at the international level.

Mr. Cudjoe, therefore, encouraged journalists to support the fight against IFFs by investigating and writing fact-checked stories to unearth the hidden truths about IFFs in Ghana and beyond.

Mr. Benaiah Addo, the Executive Director of the Green Tax Youth Africa, Accra, said taxation was a means to gather revenue for the development of a country.

However, when the structures are weak with no proper equipment to foster the collection and proper record keeping, people devise various means of evading tax or paying less.

Mr. Addo said every government must invest in the process of taxation to harness enough revenue and seal most if not all gaps in the tax system for the good of the country.

Former Inter Milan midfielder Sulley Muntari is backing his former side to win the Champions League as they prepare to face Paris Saint-Germain.

The Serie A side will clash with the French side at the Allianz Arena on Saturday night.

Having lost the final to Manchester City two years ago, Inter will hope to make amends.

Ahead of the game, Muntari, who was part of their last UCL-winning squad in 2010, believes the Nerazzurri are “experienced” enough to take home the title.

“I think Inter Milan are building up their team,” he told 3Sports.

“They are very strong, let’s see. They are more experienced now, mature. Inter Milan has a really strong and well-experienced team,” he added.

Meanwhile, PSG, who were finalists in 2021, are also chasing their first European title in history.

Kick off for the game has been scheduled to kick off at 19:00 GMT.

From thirst to triumph: VIMA delivers safe water to forgotten village in Ghana

0

For generations, the people of Matse-Nkuase rose each morning with the same daily burden — walking long distances in search of water from a murky, unreliable source. Children fell ill. Mothers worried. Hope dwindled.

But that story changed when a small act of compassion from across the ocean turned into a lifeline for an entire community.

The dusty path to waterlessness was finally broken last week when Volunteers for International Medical Aid (VIMA) commissioned a fully mechanised submersible borehole water system in the village — a project made possible through the generous support of partners in California, USA.

Amid drumming, dancing, and tears of gratitude, villagers gathered to witness what many called a “miracle in their lifetime.”

“This is more than just water. This is health. This is dignity. This is hope,” said Francis Agbemafle, Founder and Executive Director of VIMA. “For years we’ve worked in villages like this because we believe that no child should go to bed thirsty and no mother should fear that the water her child drinks might be the reason he doesn’t wake up tomorrow.”

Mr. Agbemafle dedicated the project to the hard-working women of Matse-Nkuase, drawing from the memory of his own late mother, a woman who raised him through hardship and taught him the value of resilience.

He urged women in the community to continue building strong families even amid daily struggles.

A Community Transformed

Before the arrival of the borehole, Matse-Nkuase had no access to safe drinking water. Residents relied on a muddy, open water source, contaminated and dangerous. Illnesses were common, especially among children.

“Three years ago, when we visited this community, we saw a level of deprivation that broke our hearts,” recounted Mr. Christopher Webu, VIMA’s Country Projects Manager. “There was no clean water. No toilet. Children went barefoot to school. We had to do something.”

The story reached Dr. Steve and Susie Portz in Las Vegas, USA, longtime VIMA supporters. Touched by the dire situation, they worked with their son CJ Portz, a previous donor, to redirect part of his $10,000 contribution towards building a water system.

Alongside family members Andrea and Noelle Portz, the funds brought the project to life.

Today, the water system stands tall, equipped with a submersible pump, an overhead poly tank, and complete electrical wiring, mounted on a 5-foot concrete platform, serving hundreds of villagers with clean water daily.

The Spirit of Giving Spreads

The ripple effect of goodwill didn’t stop there. Present at the ceremony was a visiting volunteer group from the United States, including Brian Asher and Zarah Rezapour, who were deeply moved by the living conditions in the village.

In an impromptu but powerful pledge, they promised to fund the construction of an 8-unit toilet facility for the community, a long overdue need.

As part of their visit, the group also funded a $6,000 propane tank project for the VIMA home kitchen, boosting efficiency and hygiene for the charity’s base of operations.

Voices of Gratitude

The village chief, Togbey Setorwu Kofi Amponsah, emotionally thanked VIMA and its partners for their continued investment in the community.

“This is not just help, it is salvation. Our people now live with less fear, more health, and more dignity.”

Mr. Jude Agboyo, headmaster of the local primary school, added his voice of appreciation, noting that VIMA’s previous donations of clothing and school supplies had already made a visible impact, and now, access to clean water would further transform the academic environment.

Hope That Flows

As the first gush of clean water streamed from the tap, children clapped and elders wept. For a community that had long lived on the fringes — seen, perhaps, as too small to matter — the borehole stands not only as a source of clean water but as a symbol of visibility, value, and a future reclaimed.

In a world where millions still lack access to safe drinking water, VIMA’s work at Matse-Nkuase is a reminder that compassion knows no boundaries, and transformation often begins with one bold, intentional act of giving.

DNA confirms cause of nursing student who died in boyfriend’s room to be asthma

I was paying GHC15k a day

Actor Kwadwo Nkansah popularly known as Lilwin Actor Kwadwo Nkansah popularly known as Lilwin

Imagine shelling out GHC15,000 a day to rent a filming location for a story you deeply believe in—only to be kicked out halfway through.

That’s the frustrating reality actor and filmmaker Lilwin is facing with his latest passion project: a biopic on Captain Ibrahim Traoré, the young revolutionary leader of Burkina Faso.

For Lilwin, this wasn’t just another movie. It was a tribute to a modern African icon who has captured hearts across the continent with his bold leadership, strong anti-colonial stance, and fierce defense of his country’s sovereignty.

“People see him as the new Sankara,” Lilwin said in a past interview. “His courage and leadership are inspiring, especially for the youth. That’s why I wanted to tell his story.”

Everything was on track—until a group of about ten young men on motorbikes stormed the set and demanded that filming be stopped. When Lilwin’s team tried to reason with them, things quickly escalated.

“They damaged our equipment and caused chaos,” he recalled. “The place was rented—it was someone’s property, and we were paying GHC15,000 every day to use it.”

That’s when things took another hit. The landlord, understandably shaken by the incident, asked Lilwin to vacate the premises.

“He didn’t want any trouble, so we had no choice but to leave,” Lilwin said.

It’s a massive setback—not just financially, but emotionally too. Lilwin had reached the climax of the film and was just steps away from completing what he hoped would be an inspiring piece of cinema celebrating African pride and leadership.

Still, he’s not giving up. With most of the key scenes already shot, Lilwin says he’ll find a way to release the film and honour Captain Traoré’s legacy.

The Juaboso District Police Command has successfully apprehended a suspected armed robber during a swift operation at a mining site near Sefwi Kofi Krom in the Western North Region.

Led by Inspector Ernest Adjetey, the Formed Police Unit (FPU) responded to a distress call about an ongoing robbery. Upon arrival, officers spotted five suspects hiding in a nearby plantation. The suspects attempted to escape, but with the complainant’s help, the police chased them.

Nineteen-year-old Maxwell Awuni was captured, while four accomplices managed to flee.

A subsequent search of Awuni’s residence in Sefwi Proso led to the discovery of a cache of weapons, including multiple firearms, live cartridges, face masks, and other tools used in criminal activities.

During interrogation, Awuni admitted to attacking the mining site earlier that morning, robbing a victim of gold concentrate known as “black.”

He also disclosed plans for another robbery at a different location.

Awuni remains in police custody, assisting with investigations as authorities intensify efforts to apprehend the remaining suspects.

Government threatens fines as telcos fail to deliver quality service

Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George

The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has put telecom operators on notice: deliver better service or pay the price.

Speaking at a high-level meeting with the CEOs and technical teams of MTN, Telecel, and AT on Friday, May 30, Mr. George warned that operators who fail to improve network performance by the end of the year will face regulatory sanctions.

“We are not dealing in sentiments; we are dealing in engineering,” he said. “If you have infrastructure in place but your service is poor, we must begin to take regulatory action.”

The warning follows a National Communications Authority (NCA) report on 48 localities across Ghana, which highlighted widespread inconsistencies in service quality.

Even in economically significant areas like East Legon and Amasaman, users experience call drops, poor data speeds, and network blackouts.

By June 30, telcos must accept the newly allocated spectrum—resources the minister insists should result in visible improvements before December.

Fines, if imposed, will not stay with regulators; 40 percent will go back to customers as compensation, either through bonus data or call time.

“We know you can’t complete upgrades in three months, but we must see that the process has begun,” Mr. George stressed. “The Ghanaian people must feel the impact of the spectrum rollout by the end of this year.”

In response, MTN Ghana revealed plans to invest $230 million this year, with an internal GH¢25 million budget set aside to recruit frontline staff and expand service centers.

Telecel, for its part, is ramping up shop expansion and continuing network optimization. AT’s CEO promised visible improvements by the first quarter of next year, urging the public to judge the changes for themselves.

The Netherlands international has sealed a long-term contract with Liverpool The Netherlands international has sealed a long-term contract with Liverpool

Liverpool FC have announced the signing of Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen, marking a significant addition to their squad.

The Netherlands international sealed a long-term contract at the AXA Training Centre on Friday, May 30, 2025, after successfully passing his medical. The deal has been confirmed as a key move for the Reds as they look to strengthen their options on the right flank.

In his first interview with Liverpool, Frimpong expressed his enthusiasm and confidence about the move. He described the process as smooth and straightforward, stating: “It went quite easy. Liverpool came and said they had interest, and obviously for me it was a no-brainer. I’m ready to give my all—my energy and my work rate—to help the team succeed.” The player also assured fans of his dedication and commitment to winning trophies with Liverpool.

The 24-year-old arrives at Anfield after a successful stint in Germany, where he made 190 appearances, scored 30 goals, and provided 44 assists for Leverkusen over four-and-a-half seasons. Frimpong played a crucial role in Leverkusen’s historic season, helping them clinch both the Bundesliga title and the DFB-Pokal in 2023–24. His performances earned him a place in the Bundesliga Team of the Season for two consecutive years.

Born in Amsterdam but of Ghanaian descent, Frimpong began his football journey in the youth ranks of Manchester City before moving to Celtic in 2019. During his time in Scotland, he enjoyed a fruitful spell, winning three major honours. His impressive performances in Scotland and Germany led to his debut for the Dutch national team in October 2023. He has since earned 12 caps and scored one goal.

Ghana’s Black Queens surrendered a two-goal lead to draw 3-3 with Cote d’Ivoire in the first of two international friendlies as part of their preparations for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

Head coach Kim Bjorkegren’s side looked in control for much of the game, with goals from Sherifatu Sumaila, Chantelle Hlorgah, and an own goal giving Ghana a 3-1 advantage by the 51st minute. But a late fightback from the Ivorians saw the game end in a draw.

Sherifatu opened the scoring in the 18th minute, and Hlorgah doubled the lead in the 41st with her first senior goal. Cote d’Ivoire responded quickly, pulling one back before halftime. An own goal extended Ghana’s lead after the break, but defensive lapses allowed the Ivorians to score twice in the second half and secure the draw.

The match is one of two friendlies lined up to test Ghana’s readiness for the continental tournament. The Black Queens begin their WAFCON campaign on July 7 against defending champions South Africa, followed by group stage clashes with Mali and Tanzania.

2024/25 Ghana Premier League: Week 33 Match Preview

Legon Cities football team Legon Cities football team

Legon Cities will welcome Hearts of Oak to the University of Ghana Stadium on Sunday in a Matchweek 33 fixture of the Ghana Premier League. The hosts are already relegated but will play for pride, while Hearts of Oak are looking to finish the season on a strong note with a top-four spot still within reach.

This encounter marks the penultimate game of the campaign for both sides. Despite their current form, Legon Cities hold a slightly better recent head-to-head record against Hearts of Oak, winning two and drawing three of their last six meetings. The Phobians’ only win in that span came in January this year, a 1-0 triumph in Accra.

Legon Cities have endured a tough season, recording just seven wins, four draws, and 21 losses in 32 matches. They have scored 22 goals and conceded 47, averaging 0.69 goals scored and 1.47 conceded per match. Their recent form has been poor, with five consecutive defeats heading into this weekend.

Hearts of Oak, on the other hand, have found form in the final stretch, winning their last two matches against Accra Lions and Berekum Chelsea. The Phobians have won 14, drawn 10, and lost eight games this season, with a solid defensive record of just 18 goals conceded.

Currently fifth on the table with 52 points, Hearts of Oak will be pushing for maximum points to seal a strong finish, while Legon Cities, 17th with 25 points, will aim to bow out of the top flight with some dignity.

Can Nations FC break the myth?

0

Die-hard fans of Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak will confidently tell you no club in their respective regions, namely Ashanti and Greater Accra, can outshine the two veteran traditional clubs that boast of the largest support base in the country.

Mind you, they have a history to back their claim. The fact is no matter the frequent oscillating, fortunes of Kotoko and Hearts, the two clubs can quickly manage to bounce back and put to shame the pretenders who attempt to denigrate their superiority.

In the Greater Accra Region for instance, Hearts of Oak have so dominated the scene you would think teams like Standfast and Argonauts never existed.

Great Olympics have been the long time credible challengers of Hearts but despite all their showboating that earned them the title of Wonder club, they continue to play second best to Hearts.

No wonder the wonder club have tasted relegation from the top division several times. When factory clubs sprang up in the 70s, Dumas Boys of Ghana Textile Printing (GTP) made bold attempts to outshine the Phobians but failed.

Subsequently, mushroom teams like Boye Sowah’s Lions turned Zebi, State Traders, Afienya United, Prampram Mighty Royals, Kotobabi Powerlines, Ghapoha, Stay Cool and Tema Youth emerged, but only to add to the numbers.

The most outstanding discovery was Liberty Professionals in 2008. They attracted tremendous media attention and earned the accolade “Scientific soccer lads.” Coach Jones Attuquayefio was directing affairs on the pitch.

Formed in 1996 by former top division footballer, Sly Tetteh, Liberty Professionals produced top class footballers like Asamoah Gyan, Michael Essien, Sulley Muntari and Kwadwo Asamoah.

Unfortunately, the club could not maintain their ability to produce many more leading stars and faced relegation in the 2020-21 season. The reputed scientific soccer lads lost their Premier division status alongside Cape Coast Dwarfs and Inter Allies of Accra.

The death of Sly Tetteh, the founder, might has affected the running of the club and not much is heard of them at the moment. It is still Accra Hearts of Oak that is the dominant club in Greater Accra.

Turning to the Ashanti Region, however, you find Asante Kotoko facing a stiff challenge from newly formed, Nations FC, owned by former Kotoko chairman, Dr Kwame Kyei.

Nations FC are on the verge of winning this year’s Premier League.

With only two matches to go, Nations FC are five points ahead of Kotoko, who is in fourth position. It’s almost a done deal for Nations but ardent Kotoko fans who rely on history are convinced Nations FC can never eclipse the fabulous club of Africa.

Let’s wait and see whether Dr Kyei’s Nations FC can eclipse the Porcupine Warriors famously described by Ohene Djan, the sports administrator guru as the “Porcupine Warriors whose popularity the sun never sets.”

Let’s delve into history a bit. In 1954, that is 71 years ago, a big split in Asante Kotoko was engineered by the legendary C.K Gyamfi who was then captain of the club.

He had been found guilty of arranging an unauthorised Easter celebration friendly match against Hearts of Oak at Abetifi Kwahu in the name of the club and subsequently suspended.

He, however, called the bluff of management and boldly formed a rival club, Great Ashanti, comprising a number of Kotoko players and other clubs.

The new club became Kotoko’s great rivals in the national league. Not for long anyway. The snag is the club’s founder C.K Gyamfi himself left Kumasi to join Accra Hearts of Oak.

The club he left behind led by playmaker, Nana Kofi, played good football but they could not surpass the popularity of Asante Kotoko and ultimately folded up.

It’s a long story but the short of it is that Kotoko fans believe the spirit of the Porcupine Warriors is so strong to an extent that no team in the region can upstage them, especially when the challenge is from a Kotoko insider. In other words a Kotoko executive.

Hear them, “Charles Gyimah (formerly of the Yaw Bawuah administration) formed Kumapem FC based at Asante Mampong; see what happened. Where are they now?”

Georgido (former chairman) went to All Blacks and fiercely challenged Kotoko both home and away. What’s the fate of All Blacks now? Even Goldfields, with all the Obuasi gold at their disposal were booted out of the Premier League by the GFA under very mysterious circumstances.

Well, I am not all that superstitious even though I won’t walk under a ladder, I guess Kotoko’s unassailable supremacy could have some spiritual backing.

The die-hard supporters greet by shouting, “Fabulous” and the response is “still the best.”

The football world creates a fascinating world indeed.

Just look at how Liverpool celebrated their 20th Premier League triumph. Lovely.

Don’t mind that reckless driver who decided to spoil the fun by colliding with the teeming fans on parade. He definitely has no sense of humour.

Cheers everybody and keep loving sports.

My disclosure of Wontumi’s location has nothing to do with Ken Agyapong

President and founder of Citizen Eye Ghana (CITEG), Alex Tetteh President and founder of Citizen Eye Ghana (CITEG), Alex Tetteh

President and founder of Citizen Eye Ghana (CITEG), Alex Tetteh, has provided an explanation for his decision to reveal the whereabout of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako popularly known as Chairman Wontumi to national security agencies.

His explanation comes on the heels of speculations by a section of the public who seek to link his actions to former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.

According to him, he sent the petition to security agencies for them to initiate a probe into the allegations levelled against Chairman Wontumi.

In his estimation the move was intended to bring finality to allegations of corruption levelled against the embattled NPP executive.

Speaking in an interview with Neat FM and monitored by GhanaWeb, on May, 30, 2025, Tetteh confirmed that he personally submitted a petition to state institutions including EOCO, the Office of the Special Prosecutor, and the Office of the President, regarding what he described as issues of public concern.

He, however, strongly denied any link between his actions and a campaign for Kennedy Agyapong, a leading contender in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer race.

“Let me be very clear on this platform. I acted as a concerned citizen and leader of Citizen Eye Ghana, a non-partisan civil society organisation. My actions were not coordinated, directed, or influenced by Kennedy Agyapong or his campaign team,” he stated.

While acknowledging his personal support for Kennedy Agyapong, Tetteh emphasised that his personal affiliation has got nothing to do with campaigning for the former legislator.

“Yes, I support Kennedy Agyapong personally but that does not mean that everything I say, is backed by him or reflects his position on issues. He did not know about the petition, and from his public statements, he clearly does not endorse it. The petition was entirely my initiative,” he clarified.

Responding to claims that the petition may have been politically motivated, he reiterated Citizen Eye Ghana’s commitment to neutrality and accountability.

“CITEG is not aligned with any political party. Our mission is for Ghana, not for the NPP or NDC. What I did was in line with our mandate as a civil society organisation concerned with justice, transparency, and good governance,” he said emphatically.

Tetteh has expressed full confidence in due process, stating that the narrative that his action constitutes a political witch hunt is false. He questioned why the current government will go for Wontumi if they have no evidential basis.

“I believe the security agencies will ensure fairness and due process, devoid of political interference. If Chairman Wontumi has done nothing wrong, he will come out clean just like Ato Forson who was recently vindicated after months of legal and political pressure,” he stated.

He added that civic responsibility should not be misinterpreted as political sabotage.

“If we’re going to build a stronger democracy, we need to allow space for citizens to act without fear of being tagged or misrepresented. This wasn’t about politics. This was about principle.

“Let us not confuse civic duty with political strategy. The strategy employed by other opponents by vilifying Ken Agyapong and tagging him with every bad thing that happens within the party is becoming stale. Those who rejoiced when Anas was awarded 18 million against Ken Agyapong are the ones crying foul that one of their own is under investigation,” he said.

He noted that Kennedy Agyapong’s campaign is still in full force and emphasised that being united must be for a greater cause such as the pursuit for accountability, fairness and justice.

We must ensure accountability and responsible governance when we have power. We could be united and still lose if we do not have the interests of Ghanaians at heart. If someone has done something wrong, there is no need to shield him under the guise of party loyalty. It is such corrupt practices that make the NPP unpopular and not those who comment on it,” he said.

“Ivan is a right-footed, speedy central defender, with his tall stature and strength in duels he is a winning type of player who should fit into our system. He will start his summer training in Sparta’s B-team, where he will have the space and opportunity to acclimatize to the club,” says interim sports director Tomáš Sivok.

The former Inter Allies player made 28 appearances across all competitions, scoring two goals for Bystrica before moving to Slavia Prague.

“The feelings I had when I found out about Sparta’s interest cannot be fully described. I was very happy and tried my best to be here,” said the lanky centre-back after completing the move.

Mensah has represented Ghana at youth levels and was part of the team that won the 2021 Africa U20 Cup of Nations in Mauritania.

‘I’m suffering, but won’t leave EOCO without seeing Wontumi’ – NPP’s Nyandoh

NPP Ashanti Regional Communications Director, Paul Kwabena Nyandoh NPP Ashanti Regional Communications Director, Paul Kwabena Nyandoh

The Ashanti Regional Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Nyandoh, has disclosed the unpleasant situation he has had to endure in his bid to see his embattled Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, who is in the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

According to the outspoken politician, who claims he has been sleeping at the premises of EOCO since Tuesday, he has had to endure mosquito bites while waiting to see Chairman Wontumi—who is reportedly unwell—in order to hand over his medications.

Speaking on Asempa FM on Friday, May 30, 2025, Paul Nyandoh vowed not to leave the premises of EOCO until he sees his beloved Chairman, whom he believes is being unjustly persecuted through the use of state agencies.

“I keep getting weaker with each passing minute. As I speak to you, I am right by the gate of EOCO. If Chairman Wontumi is in custody, I can’t leave here and go home. Mosquitoes have feasted on my body—they have bitten me badly—but I am not moved by that. I do this because of the love I have for Wontumi and because I truly believe he has not done anything wrong to warrant being held in custody for four days. We have not seen Chairman Wontumi since Tuesday, and today is Friday.

Chairman Wontumi is being unnecessarily punished. I have his medications in my car—he has to take them in the morning and evening. But since Tuesday, I cannot say whether he has received any of the medicines. This is very worrying. His sister and brother are also here, hoping to see him, but they have been denied access.”

Chairman Wontumi was granted bail on Tuesday, May 27, requiring GH₵50 million with two justified sureties, following his arrest by EOCO on suspicions of fraud, money laundering, and other financial crimes. Until Friday, his team had only secured one surety.

His legal team confirmed on Friday that they had fulfilled the GH₵50 million bail conditions set by EOCO.

However, his lawyer, Andrew Appiah-Kubi, revealed that despite meeting the bail conditions, Wontumi’s release has been stalled due to a fresh legal application filed earlier in the day.

“My client is not going home tonight. We encountered a challenge that needs to be addressed before we can move forward,” he explained.

“Unknown to me, an application was filed to frustrate what we are doing. We will deal with it on Monday. It is an application that was not filed by me, but it has prohibited his release,” Appiah-Kubi noted.

Abdul-Rasheed Saminu sets new National Record in the men’s 100m, books qualification for Tokyo World Championships

0

Abdul-Rasheed Saminu has set a new Ghana national record in the men’s 100m, clocking an impressive 9.86 seconds to win at the NCAA East Preliminary Round on Friday.

The blistering performance not only secures his spot at the World Athletics Championships in September but also ties for the second fastest time in NCAA history and only 0.04s off the NCAA record held by Christian Coleman (9.82s).

A student at the University of South Florida (USF), Saminu shaved 0.04 seconds off the previous national record of 9.90 seconds, set by Benjamin Azamati in 2022. His time is also a new personal best and currently stands as the fastest recorded 100m time in the world this year.

This latest achievement continues a remarkable rise for the 27-year-old sprinter, who ran a wind-assisted 9.87 seconds just last month.

Saminu was named USF’s Male Athlete of the Year for 2024, recognized for his outstanding individual performances, including a 100m semifinal appearance at the Paris Olympic Games.

Since joining the USF track team, he has broken multiple indoor and outdoor records and was recently honored as a First Team All-American in the 60m dash during this year’s indoor season.

After missing out on the World Relays earlier this month in China, Saminu is expected to play a key role for Ghana as they aim for their first-ever track medal at the World Championships in Tokyo later this year.

Ghana gold output could rise 6.25% to 5.1 million ounces in 2025

0

High output has been driven by strong production from artisanal mining and the introduction of new large-scale operations, counteracting a decline at the country’s aging mines.

The 2025 forecast published in the chamber’s annual report follows Ghana’s stronger-than-expected performance in 2024, when total gold output surged 19.3%, cementing its position as Africa’s top gold producer, ahead of South Africa and Mali.

Supreme Court allows Trump to revoke legal status for 500,000 migrants

0

President Donald Trump’s administration can temporarily revoke the legal status of over 500,000 migrants living in the US, the US Supreme Court ruled on Friday.

The ruling put on hold a previous federal judge’s order stopping the administration from ending the “parole” immigration programme, established by former President Joe Biden. The programme protected immigrants fleeing economic and political turmoil in their home countries.

The new order puts roughly 530,000 migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela at risk of being deported.

Justices Ketanji Brown Jackson and Sonia Sotomayor, two of the court’s three liberal justices, dissented.

The parole programme allows immigrants temporary status to work and live in the US for two years because of “urgent humanitarian reasons or significant public benefit”, according to the US government.

The Trump administration had filed an emergency appeal to the Supreme Court after a federal judge in Massachusetts blocked the administration from ending the programme, also known as CHNV humanitarian parole.

The White House “celebrated” the opportunity to deport 500,000 “invaders”, White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller told CNN. “The Supreme Court justly stepped in”.

In her dissent, Justice Jackson wrote that the court’s order would “have the lives of half a million migrants unravel all around us before the courts decide their legal claims”.

On the day he took office, Trump signed an executive order directing the Department of Homeland Security to get rid of parole programmes. Then, in March, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced the end of CHNV humanitarian parole.

Several immigrants rights groups and migrants from the programme sued the Trump administration over the decision, arguing they could “face serious risks of danger, persecution and even death” if deported back to their home countries.

The ruling comes after the Supreme Court earlier this month allowed Trump officials to revoke Temporary Protected Status (TPS) – a separate programme – for some 350,000 Venezuelan immigrants living and working in the US.

Humanitarian parole programmes have been used for decades to allow immigrants fleeing war and other tumultuous conditions in their home countries to come to the US, including Cubans in the 1960s following the revolution.

The Biden administration also established a parole programme in 2022 for Ukrainians fleeing after Russia’s invasion.

Wontumi denied access to family – lawyer confirms amidst detention

0

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is currently being denied access to his family while in the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), his lawyer has confirmed.

Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse today, Wontumi’s lawyer Andy Appiah-Kubi stated, “That is true,” when asked about accusations from the NPP Ashanti Regional Chapter that EOCO was preventing his family from seeing him.

Mr Appiah-Kubi explained that, even as his legal representative, he must “apply for the application to be approved” and “be led by an official” to gain access to his client.

He added that Wontumi’s phones have been confiscated, making it impossible for him to communicate with anyone independently.

The lawyer views this restriction as a “violation” of his client’s rights.

His legal team indicated that they would consider seeking further redress for the denial of family access at an “appropriate time”, with their immediate focus on securing his release.

Chairman Wontumi is receiving medical attention at a clinic while in EOCO’s custody, and his lawyer confirmed he “has been unwell and is still unwell.”

However, the lawyer denied knowledge of any hunger strike, stating he had dinner with Wontumi just two days prior.

The legal team has met the GHS 50 million bail conditions imposed by EOCO, which require two justified sureties, but they have to wait until Monday to ascertain the fate of the outspoken regional chairman, as EOCO has filed another suit in court.

Wontumi’s legal representatives have already filed an application in court seeking a variation of the bail conditions, which they describe as “most difficult and worse and most unfair”.

The lawyer highlighted that while EOCO has the mandate to arrest, the “mode” of Wontumi’s apprehension, being “accosted in the middle of the road and arrested” without prior direct invitation, is a primary concern.

Chairman Wontumi was initially invited by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for allegedly mining without a license and polluting a river in the Western Region.

He has denied all these allegations. His current detention by EOCO focuses on separate allegations of “causing financial loss to the state”.

Despite the challenging circumstances, Wontumi is reportedly “not too happy with the situation” but has expressed his willingness to cooperate with any legitimate invitations from security agencies.

Ghana advances SDG localisation agenda at UN-Habitat in Nairobi

0

By Edward Dankwah

Accra, May 30, GNA – Ghana has demonstrated strong leadership and strategic progress in localising the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as shared during a high-level side event on Multi-Level Governance for SDG Localisation.

The event, which was held on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, in Nairobi, formed part of the resumed second session of the United Nations Habitat Assembly, convened by UN-Habitat.

Madam Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, Deputy Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, representing Ghana, outlined Ghana’s practical approach and policy infrastructure for localising the SDGs through coordinated national and sub-national governance systems.

She said the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) was Ghana’s apex planning institution responsible for developing national policy frameworks, issuing guidelines to sectors and local authorities, and producing annual progress reports that incorporated SDG indicators.

Madam Sowah said the Ministry, working in close partnership with the Ministry of Finance, facilitated the development of planning and budget guidelines that aligned local development efforts with global goals.

“Ghana’s SDGs Advisory Unit, located at the Office of the President, also plays a pivotal role in coordinating SDG implementation across government agencies and with development partners,” she added.

She noted that Ghana’s national policies, including the National Urban Policy and the National Slum Upgrading and Prevention Strategy were deliberately designed to align, adapt, and adopt the SDGs into the country’s development priorities.

The Deputy Minister referenced the Ghana Smart SDG Cities Programme, a flagship initiative supported by UN-Habitat, which sought to integrate the SDGs into city development using data-driven planning, spatial development frameworks, and community-led approaches.

Ten selected Metropolitan and Municipal Assemblies are currently at varying stages of implementation, especially in spatial planning and investment identification.

“Assemblies such as the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Ga West Municipal Assembly, and Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly have already embarked on Voluntary Local Reviews, making Ghana one of the few countries in Africa advancing local-level SDG reporting,” she added.

The deputy minister acknowledged the critical oversight role of the Regional Coordinating Councils in monitoring and evaluating the performance of local authorities under Ghana’s decentralised governance framework.

She said key institutions including the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralisation, the Institute of Local Government Studies, and the Office of the Head of the Local Government Service, were all tasked with policy coherence, technical capacity-building, and administrative oversight.

She emphasised that Ghana was scaling up efforts to deepen its partnerships with UN-Habitat and other development actors to implement the New Urban Agenda.

Madam Sowah expressed the country’s full support for the adoption of the upcoming UN-Habitat Strategic Plan (2026–2029) and the International Guidelines on People-Centred Smart Cities.

She cited the Participatory Slum Upgrading Programme (PSUP), implemented in areas like Ga Mashie, as an example of how targeted urban interventions could produce tangible benefits for the urban poor.

“Ghana remains committed to translating global commitments into meaningful local action. Through bold policies, inclusive planning, and strong partnerships, we are shaping cities that work for everyone, especially the most vulnerable,” she stressed.

Alcaraz made to suffer in four-set win over Dzumhur

0

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz was forced to fight for his place in the French Open fourth round with a testing victory over a dogged Damir Dzumhur.

The second seed had looked to be making light work of his opponent with a two-set lead, before a revival from the Bosnian pushed their encounter into a fourth set under the lights on Court Philippe Chatrier.

Spaniard Alcaraz, seeking to becoming the first man since compatriot Rafael Nadal in 2020 to retain the Roland Garros title, eventually ground out a 6-1 6-3 4-6 6-4 success.

“I didn’t enjoy it too much,” said the 22-year-old. “I suffered quite a lot but I’m happy to have played a good match with Damir.

“That’s why it’s difficult to win Grand Slams because you have to maintain your focus over three or four hours.

“The first two sets were under control and then he decided to play deeper and more aggressive. My energy went down and it was hard to push, but I had to give everything I had inside. I’m proud to get the win in the end.”

Alcaraz will face 13th seed Ben Shelton next after the American beat Italy’s Matteo Gigante 6-3 6-3 6-4 earlier on Friday.

Alcaraz’s form during his second-round win over Fabian Marozsan had been patchy and Friday’s first meeting at ATP Tour level against Dzumhur looked set to be a much smoother affair.

Having shrugged off two early break points, he reeled off five successive games to wrap up the opening set inside 30 minutes, with his opponent looking exasperated at times as he struggled to contain the man seen as the one to beat on the Paris clay this year.

The second set followed in much the same fashion, and while Dzumhur, 33, did have his chances with break points in the second and sixth games, he lacked the weapons to cause Alcaraz any concern.

A double fault sealed the two-set lead for the Spaniard, but then the errors started to creep into his own game in the third as Dzumhur found another gear on the other side of the net.

After a brief pause to receive treatment on a knee injury, the Bosnian – seeking to reach the fourth round of a Slam for the first time – finally got the break he had been fighting for.

Alcaraz wasted three immediate chances to break back at 4-3 down, and a further two as his opponent served out the set.

Dzumhur’s resurgence continued into the fourth as he broke the frustrated Spaniard at the first time of asking, and Alcaraz was forced to watch more break points of his own come and go unconverted.

But Dzumhur was only ever going to hold him off temporarily.

Alcaraz, starting to show glimpses of the clinical form on show in the opening two sets, won four successive games, and while he was broken back when serving for the match, he again broke Dzumhur to close the tie as the clock neared midnight in the French capital.

Rune to face Musetti next but injured Fils withdraws

Danish 10th seed Holger Rune also reached the fourth round by beating France’s Quentin Halys in five sets.

Rune, who stunned Alcaraz in the final to win the Barcelona Open last month, had to come from two-sets-to-one down in a 4-6 6-2 5-7 7-5 6-2 victory.

Rune will next face Italian eighth seed Lorenzo Musetti, who beat Argentine Mariano Navone in four sets.

Elsewhere, 12th seed Tommy Paul won his second five-set match in a row to set up a fourth-round tie with Australian 25th seed Alexei Popyrin.

The American, 28, ousted Russian 24th seed Karen Khachanov 3-6 6-3 7-6 (9-7) 3-6 6-3, while Popyrin recorded a 6-4 7-6 (13-11) 7-6 (7-5) win over Portugal’s Nuno Borges.

American 15th seed Frances Tiafoe beat compatriot and 23rd seed Sebastian Korda 7-6 (8-6) 6-3 6-4 and will face unseeded German Daniel Altmaier next.

Altmaier reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time by defeating Serbia’s Hamad Medjedovic 4-6 6-3 6-3 6-2.

French 14th seed Arthur Fils, who overcame injury to beat Jaume Munar on Thursday, has pulled out of Saturday’s third-round tie with Russian 17th seed Andrey Rublev.

Rublev will face Italian top seed Jannik Sinner or Czech Jiri Lehecka in the fourth round, with the pair due to meet on Saturday.

Dr Bawumia describes GH 50 million bail bond for Wontumi as ‘onerous’

The 2024 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed disappointment after efforts to meet the bail conditions of GH¢50 million for the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, proved unsuccessful. Wontumi is currently in custody at the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) in connection with an ongoing criminal investigation.

Addressing the press on Friday, May 30, 2025, Dr Bawumia revealed that arrangements to visit Chairman Wontumi had failed.

“We had made arrangements to come and see our Chairman Wontumi, who was arrested and has been held in custody by EOCO. We wanted to check on him and see how he was doing. All necessary preparations were made,” he stated.

Dr Bawumia also criticised the bail conditions imposed on Wontumi.

“I must put on record that the bail conditions set for Chairman Wontumi, GH¢50 million, are very onerous. I don’t know how many people in Ghana own property worth that amount. It appears designed to delay his release,” he remarked.

He further expressed dissatisfaction over being denied access to Wontumi despite prior notice.

“We are very disappointed in our inability to see him, especially after making the necessary arrangements. We’ve communicated our disappointment and will continue efforts to ensure we get to see him,” he added.

The former Vice President also appealed for calm among party supporters.

“I want to plead with all of you to remain calm as we work behind the scenes to ensure his release. I believe we will succeed, but we must remain peaceful and not take the law into our own hands. It’s important that we follow due process and ensure Chairman Wontumi is released safe and sound,” he urged.

Chairman Wontumi was taken into custody by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) after undergoing interrogation by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Tuesday, May 27, 2025.

He is currently under investigation for alleged involvement in multiple criminal offences, including fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering.

Deputy Attorney General, Justice Srem-Sai, has disclosed that a second phase of the investigation reportedly links Wontumi to a broader international organised crime syndicate.

Although EOCO granted him bail of GH¢50 million, his legal team has yet to meet the conditions required for his release.

Wontumi’s lawyers meet bail conditions

0

The legal team of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has successfully met the bail conditions set by the Economic and Organised Office (EOCO).

However, a pending court motion is reportedly preventing his immediate release.

Speaking to journalists on Friday, May 30, lead counsel Andy Appiah-Kubi assured party supporters and the public that Chairman Wontumi was in good health and stable condition while in custody.

“He is good, he is healthy, and there is nothing to worry about,” Appiah-Kubi said, calming concerns that had grown since Wontumi’s arrest.

The NPP stalwart had been granted bail by EOCO on Wednesday, May 28, to the tune of GHS 50 million with two justified sureties. According to Appiah-Kubi, those bail conditions have now been fully met.

“We have been able to provide the sureties. That one, I can assure you,” he confirmed. He went on to express his heartfelt appreciation to Abetifi MP and former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong, whose intervention helped secure the necessary documentation to satisfy the bail terms.

“I am very grateful to Honourable Bryan Acheampong, who has supported me in providing the documents. He has brought documents that are over and above the value of the money required,” Appiah-Kubi added.

Despite fulfilling the bail conditions, the legal team encountered an unexpected legal hurdle. Appiah-Kubi disclosed that a court motion had been filed—unknown to him at the time—which has complicated the process of securing Wontumi’s release.

“Unknown to me, an application was filed that prohibits us from securing his release,” he revealed.

The motion in question, filed by Marfo & Associates at the High Court in Accra, seeks a review of the bail conditions and may be aimed at either altering or suspending the terms previously set by EOCO. The exact content and legal grounds of the motion are yet to be made public, but sources close to the case suggest it could delay Wontumi’s release for several more days.

Chairman Wontumi was initially arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Tuesday, May 27, before he was picked up by EOCO for further investigation. He is currently under investigation for alleged financial misconduct, including possible links to financial losses to the state.

The case has sparked significant political and public interest, with top NPP figures, including former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, visiting the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) in a bid to check on his welfare.

As of Friday evening, heavy security remained stationed around the NIB premises, and party supporters continued to gather in solidarity as legal proceedings unfolded.

Parliament recommends ratification of WTO agreement on fisheries subsidies

0

By Elsie Appiah-Osei

Accra, May 30, GNA- The Committee on Food, Agriculture, and Cocoa Affairs and the Committee on Trade, Industry, and Tourism of Parliament has recommended that Ghana ratifies the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies.

This move, according to the Committee, aims to promote sustainable marine resource management and curb harmful fisheries subsidies that contribute to overcapacity, overfishing, and Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing.

Moving the report of the Committee on the Floor of Parliament for the adoption  of the House on Friday, Dr Godfred Seidu Jasaw, Chairman of the Committee on Food, Agriculture, and Cocoa Affairs, said the Committee considered the Agreement a significant step in global efforts to curb harmful fisheries subsidies that contributed to overcapacity, overfishing, and IUU fishing, promoting sustainable marine resource management.

“Mr Speaker, the ratification would also highlight Ghana’s commitment to global cooperation, aligning with its roles as host of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and as a founding member of the African Union (AU),” he said.

Dr Jasaw, noted that the implications of the ratification included enhancing measures against IUU fishing and other unsustainable fishing practices; improving data collection and reporting on fisheries indicators; increase transparency among WTO members and supporting global efforts to sustainably manage fisheries resources.

The others he noted were the benefit from fair trade practices in both domestic and international markets; contributing to job creation, poverty alleviation, national food security, and good foreign exchange earnings

Among the challenges and concerns the Committee’s report enumerated were potential impact on local fishing communities, particularly small-scale and artisanal fishers who relied on government support such as subsidies on premix fuel, outboard motors, and fishing gear.

“There is the need for careful consideration of domestic implications and mitigating measures to protect vulnerable fishing communities,” the report said.

The Committee recommended that the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture finalised a new Fisheries Bill, which will incorporate the provisions of the WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies.

“The Committee will closely monitor the drafting and passage of the new legislation to ensure it reflects Ghana’s international commitments and socio-economic realities of fishing communities,” the report said.

Some Members of Parliament (MPs) who contributed to the debate on the adoption of the Committee’s report called for sustainable practices with an emphasis on environmentally friendly practices, reduction of plastic waste, and promotion of local materials for fishing gear.

Mr Habib Iddrisu, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP for Tolon, seconding the Motion raised concerns about potential effects on fishermen’s livelihoods, with plans to mitigate adverse effects.

Mr Murtala Mohammed, a National Democratic Congress MP for Tamale Central, and the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, called for investing in infrastructure and equipment to support fishing communities as well as the improvement of working conditions and resources available to officials in these areas.

Madam Emelia Arthur, the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, said the WTO agreement prohibited subsidies to vessels engaged in IUU fishing, relevant to Ghana’s current “yellow card” status from the European Union.

She told Parliament that the expected outcomes of the ratification would include improved sustainability, efficiency, transparency, and cooperation among WTO members, potentially boosting Ghana’s fishing industry.

“Mr Speaker, potential outcomes will improved Industry Sustainability that will enhance measures against IUU fishing and unsustainable practices economic benefits where fair trade practices and sustainable fishing may lead to economic gains and increased Transparency for better data collection and reporting among WTO members,” she said.

Wontumi meets EOCO’s GH₵50m bail conditions

0

Chairman Wontumi has been in custody since Tuesday Chairman Wontumi has been in custody since Tuesday

The legal team of the embattled Ashanti Regional Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, has confirmed that they have fulfilled the GH₵50 million bail conditions set by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

In an interview on Friday, May 30, 2025, lead counsel Andy Appiah-Kubi told JoyNews that all necessary documentation for the two sureties has been completed, with significant assistance from former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong.

“We have been able to provide the sureties, that one, I can assure you, and I’m very grateful to Honourable Bryan Acheampong, who has supported me to file the documents,” Appiah-Kubi said.

He added, “He has brought his documents, which go over and above the value of money that is required. So I thank you very much.”

Chairman Wontumi was granted bail on Tuesday, May 27, requiring GH₵50 million with two justified sureties, following his arrest by EOCO on suspicions of fraud, money laundering, and other financial crimes. Until Friday, his team had only secured one surety.

However, Appiah-Kubi revealed that despite meeting the bail conditions, Wontumi’s release is stalled due to a fresh legal application filed earlier in the day.

“My client is not going home tonight. We encountered a challenge that needs to be addressed before we can go forward,” he explained.

“Unknown to me, there was an application to frustrate what we are doing, so we will deal with it on Monday. It is an application that was not filed by my good self, but that prohibits us,” Appiah-Kubi noted.

He disclosed that EOCO officers were prepared to inspect the properties listed by the sureties, but the pending court application legally prevents them from proceeding until the issue is resolved.

“They had agreed to do the inspection tonight, so all the officers are there, but the challenge that I faced is legal. We can’t do it,” he said.

Appiah-Kubi also addressed confusion over Wontumi’s whereabouts, contradicting earlier claims by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

Regarding Wontumi’s health, he dismissed rumours of a hunger strike and confirmed that Wontumi is receiving medical attention.

“We had brought him to meet with the former Vice President, but the situation we saw was difficult—to arrange this meeting, to pass through the crowd, to get the Vice President to see him and talk to him. So we had to take him back,” he recounted.

“I told you that his condition of health requires attention. So he’s receiving attention, and there’s nothing to worry about in respect of his health,” Appiah-Kubi assured.

The lawyer remains optimistic that once the court matter is resolved, Chairman Wontumi will be released by Monday, June 2.

Black Stars Lose To Nigeria, Eyes Third Place

0

THE BLACK Stars of Ghana succumbed to a 2-1 loss to their fierce rival NIgerai in the 2025 Unity Cup at Brentford’s GTech Stadium in Londn on Wednesday night.

The much changed Ghanaian side which lacked its main starters, with key players like Mohammged Kudus missing, showed resielience and promise but those were not enough to secure them the much-needed victory to play in the final.

The first half of the game started a bit slow as both sides tested out each other’s strength although Nigeria showed more willingness which resulted in their goals in the first 20 minutes.

The game eventually picked pace and the Nigerians grabbed the opening goal of the game through Cyrill Dessers in the 14th minute before Richard Simpson put the ball in his own net in the 19th minute to give the Nigerians a two-goal lead.

The Black Stars picked up form in the second half that saw the team create more chances and pin Nigeria into their half for a significant part of the half.

Ghana eventually pulled one goal back through substitute Brandon Thomas-Asante in the 70th minute but the Stars failed to find a second goal to force the game into extra time.

The result means the Black Stars will settle for a third-place finish if they win Against Trinidad and Tobago who also lost their opening game to Jamaia in a 3-2 thriller the previous night.

Head Coach Otto Addo speaking after the game said his side’s lack of aggression and cohesion in the first half was the decisive factor to their loss.

“Nigeria had a more mature team that could adapt faster, and we struggled with duels, pressing, and defensive structure,” he added.

The 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed disappointment after he and other party officials were unable to visit the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, who is currently in custody.

Dr. Bawumia addressed the media outside the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) headquarters in Accra on Friday, May 30, 2025.

Wontumi’s lawyer reacts to claims of hunger strike

The lawyer for embattled Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has dismissed claims that his client is on a hunger strike in protest of his detention conditions.

According to Andy Appiah-Kubi, Chairman Wontumi is currently receiving medical attention at a clinic while in the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse on Friday, May 30, he confirmed that Wontumi has not been well since his detention began but rejected claims that he is refusing food.

His clarification follows comments by the Majority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyire, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, who alleged that Chairman Wontumi had refused to eat as a form of protest.

Describing the situation as “shocking,” Mr. Annoh-Dompreh said Wontumi was on a hunger strike and that there was a lack of official communication regarding his welfare.

However, Mr. Appiah-Kubi stated that he had not received any such information, revealing that he had shared a meal with his client just days ago.

“Two days ago in the evening, I had dinner with him. I’m going to see him now at EOCO. After that, he will respond whether this happened today or yesterday,” the lawyer said.

Chairman Wontumi is under investigation for alleged involvement in fraud, money laundering, and other financial crimes. He was granted bail set at GH₵50 million with two sureties, both to be justified.

So far, his legal team has secured only one of the required sureties, leaving him unable to meet the bail conditions for release.
