Kumasi, June 16, GNA – The University of Education, Winneba Co-operative Credit Union (UEWCCU) has embarked on a tree-planting exercise at the Kumasi campus of the Akenten Appiah-Menkah University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED), as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts.
Led by Mr. Isaac Nii Amatey, Branch Manager of the UEWCCU at AAMUSTED, the exercise saw the planting of various fruit-bearing and shade trees, including coconut, mango, and orange seedlings.
The initiative was extended to the nearby Anglican Basic School, reflecting the Union’s broader commitment to environmental conservation and community engagement.
This greening effort also aligns with the Government of Ghana’s national ‘Tree for Life’ initiative, which aims to plant 30 million trees between June 5 and 30, 2025.
The national initiative seeks to restore approximately seven million hectares of degraded land and strengthen the country’s fight against climate change.
Mr. Amatey expressed satisfaction at the Union’s active role in supporting the government’s green initiative while also enhancing the natural landscape of AAMUSTED.
He emphasized that the Union is especially proud to contribute to environmental sustainability within its host institution.
“We have deliberately focused on planting mainly fruit-bearing seedlings so that the thousands of students of AAMUSTED could have easy access to them for their nutrition and good health,” he explained.
He also assured the university community that the Credit Union would collaborate with AAMUSTED authorities to nurture the seedlings to full maturity.
As an initial step, the UEWCCU will sponsor the installation of protective wire mesh fencing around the planted seedlings to guard against damage from animals.
Mr. Michael Kofi Twum-Ampomah, Acting Director of Public Affairs at AAMUSTED, received the donation and extended the University’s sincere appreciation to the Credit Union for the impactful gesture.
He lauded UEWCCU’s ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability and community service, noting that this latest initiative builds on the Union’s previous support to the University.
These past contributions include the donation of chairs to the AAMUSTED Clinic and the provision of equipment to Mynd FM, the campus-based radio station.
Mr. Twum-Ampomah highlighted the strong and mutually beneficial relationship between the University and the UEWCCU, whose membership is made up largely of AAMUSTED staff.
He expressed confidence that the partnership would continue to flourish, especially as the Credit Union continues to provide essential financial services such as savings and loan schemes to university staff.
