Stop interfering in each other’s roles – Bole-Bamboi MP appeals to traditional rulers

0

The Member of Parliament for Bole-Bamboi, who also serves as Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Yusif Sulemana, has appealed to traditional rulers to respect and uphold their distinct roles to ensure peaceful coexistence among chiefs, landowners, settlers, and other community members.

Speaking at the 2025 Vagla Youth Congress in Bole, the MP stressed that peace can only be sustained when individuals and groups within a community understand and respect their responsibilities without encroaching on the roles of others.

“Everyone in the community has a role to play. No one should interfere in another person’s role or attempt to teach others what to do,” he stated.

Mr. Sulemana commended the speakers at the congress for not only highlighting the need for peace but also offering practical solutions to long-standing conflicts.

“They have not only complained about the need for peace, but they have also provided solutions. If you listened to the speech, there is so much wisdom in it. They have told us what to do to bring about peace, and I therefore call on all of us to take these statements seriously,” he said.

He further urged mutual respect among traditional leaders, emphasising that harmony among chiefs would translate into sustained peace in the area.

“We have to identify our various roles in this traditional area and accept them. Let us respect each other. If you are a chief, respect the other chiefs. If we do that, we will continue to have peace in this area,” he added.

The MP also expressed gratitude to the Vagla Youth Association for the critical role it played during the Gbeniyiri conflict, and on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, presented GH¢200,000 to the Association to support its educational fund.

In his address, President of the Vagla Youth Association, Jacob Kubu Ahia, appealed to Vagla communities to take education seriously and cautioned the youth against drug abuse, warning that it could destroy their future.

He also urged residents of the Savannah Region to desist from tribal and land-related conflicts, noting that such disputes undermine productivity and development. He cited the Gbeniyiri conflict as having significantly stalled development within the Bole Traditional Area.

Meanwhile, the Vaglikori of Jintilpe, speaking on behalf of the Vagla chiefs and the chief priest, encouraged the youth to engage in farming and animal rearing, noting that the Bole Traditional Area has vast arable land capable of supporting large-scale agricultural activities.

Trump Reveals High Aspirin Dose and Disinterest in Exercise

Donald Trump

United States President Donald Trump has disclosed in a detailed interview with The Wall Street Journal that he takes a higher daily dose of aspirin than his doctors recommend, attributing visible bruising on his hands to the medication while insisting his health remains perfect.

In the interview published on Thursday, the 79 year old president said he takes 325 milligrams of aspirin daily for cardiac prevention, a dose his physician has advised him to lower. They say aspirin is good for thinning out the blood, and I don’t want thick blood pouring through my heart, Trump told the Journal. I want nice, thin blood pouring through my heart. Does that make sense?

Trump added that he has been taking aspirin for 25 years and described himself as a little superstitious about changing his routine. I take the larger one, but I’ve done it for years, and what it does do is it causes bruising, he said.

According to the Mayo Clinic, a low dose of aspirin for heart attack or stroke prevention typically ranges from 75 to 100 milligrams, with 81 milligrams commonly recommended. While aspirin therapy doses can range between 75 to 325 milligrams, recent medical guidelines have stopped recommending daily aspirin for many adults, particularly those in their 70s, as the risks of excessive bleeding can outweigh the benefits.

Trump’s physician, Navy Captain Sean Barbabella, confirmed the president takes 325 milligrams of aspirin daily and said Trump remains in exceptional health. President Trump’s medical evaluations and laboratory results continue to show excellent metabolic health, and have revealed his cardiovascular health puts him 14 years younger than his age, Barbabella stated.

The interview, which Trump began by saying let’s talk about health again for the 25th time, appeared to be one of the most extensive discussions he has had with journalists about his health, age and fitness for office. Scrutiny has intensified over the past year as Trump became the oldest president ever sworn into office in January 2025.

The president also revealed new details about a medical scan he underwent in October, correcting earlier statements that it was a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan. It wasn’t an MRI, Trump said, explaining it was actually a computed tomography (CT) scan. Barbabella told the Journal the scan was done to definitively rule out any cardiovascular issues. Trump expressed regret about undergoing the procedure, saying it gave critics a little ammunition.

The bruising on Trump’s hands has been a persistent source of public attention. The White House has previously explained the discoloration is caused by frequent handshaking combined with his aspirin regimen. Trump told the Journal he uses makeup to cover the bruises, estimating it takes about 10 seconds to apply. He cited a past incident when Attorney General Pam Bondi accidentally cut his hand with her ring as an example of when he has been whacked again by someone.

On the topic of exercise, Trump was emphatic about his disinterest in regular physical activity beyond golf. I just don’t like it. It’s boring, he said. To walk on a treadmill or run on a treadmill for hours and hours like some people do, that’s not for me. The president said he tried compression socks but didn’t like them.

Trump also addressed multiple instances where cameras have captured him appearing to doze off during White House meetings and public events. During a Cabinet meeting in December, he closed his eyes for several seconds at a time. Similar episodes occurred during a November event in the Oval Office. However, Trump denied falling asleep, saying he was merely resting his eyes. I’ll just close. It’s very relaxing to me, he said. Sometimes they’ll take a picture of me blinking, blinking, and they’ll catch me with the blink.

The president credited his good genetics for his health and vitality. My health is perfect, he declared during the interview. Despite his confidence, medical experts have noted that the bruising and other visible signs raise questions about transparency regarding presidential health information.

The Journal also reported that Trump has asked his aides to limit his schedule so he can focus more on the most important meetings, a move similar to one undertaken by President Joe Biden during his 2024 candidacy. Trump typically starts his day in the Oval Office around 10 a.m. and works until 7 p.m. or 8 p.m., according to the report.

Trump’s physician noted the president takes the aspirin for cardiac prevention, though aspirin acts as an anticoagulant meant to prevent blood clots from forming. Blood clots that travel to the heart can lead to heart attacks, but the medication also increases the risk of bleeding by preventing clots from forming in wounds.

Should Trump complete his second term in full, he will be 82 years old by its conclusion, making him the oldest sitting president in United States history and breaking the record set by Biden.

Most of the applause and praises of Mahama’s government AI-generated – Bryan Acheampong

New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful Dr Bryan Acheampong has played down the achievements of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government led by John Dramani Mahama.

Speaking in a viral video clip from a recent interview, Dr Acheampong, who is also the Member of Parliament for Abetifi, asserted that the government is being praised for “artificial” measures put in place to restore the economy.

He added that when these measures stop working, which he said will be soon, Ghanaians will start asking the government tough questions.

“I’m saying that artificial intelligence can be used for a lot of things. Most of the applause and all the praise we are seeing are mainly generated by machines clapping.

“Very soon, Ghanaians will start asking questions. They will start asking questions,” he said.

The Abetifi legislator argued that the economic improvements the country is seeing are a result of the government injecting huge amounts of dollars into the economy from the Bank of Ghana.

What Bryan said about paying NPP executives $1,500 each for Bawumia to win NPP primaries

He indicated that the supposed injection from the central bank will cease at a point, and it is then that the questions will start coming.

“They will say that we voted for you 12 months ago, and you used 10 billion dollars to hold the economy; what fundamentals are you putting in place for it (the economy) to stabilise?

“The money you inject into the economy from the Bank of Ghana is one thing, but what you have to do for the economy to stabilise is another thing. The Bank of Ghana will not always be in the position to inject money, so the fundamentals must be strong,” he said.

He added, “So, very soon, Ghanaians will start asking that the money from the Bank of Ghana is no longer coming, the dollar is going up… where is the 24-hour economy? These are the pillars which are supposed to hold the economy.”

Passengers and motorists traveling on the Kumasi–Accra highway on Wednesday and Thursaday had a bitter experience as they spent close to 24 hours in traffic due to a severe gridlock on the Juaso and Asankari sections of the highway.

The gridlock was caused by the 31st Watch Night Service organized by the Overseer of the Believers Worship Centre, Stephen Adom Kyei-Duah.

Although the situation has eased, motorists have lamented what they described as their worst travel experience.

Trucks, buses, and other smaller vehicles were all stuck in the gridlock, with no alternative routes available.

Ghana Opens 2026 with Single Digit Inflation and Stable Currency

Ghana begins 2026 with inflation at 6.3 percent and the cedi trading around GH¢10.51 per United States dollar, offering a moment of stability after months of economic adjustments. The country’s annual inflation rate decelerated for the eleventh consecutive month to 6.3 percent in November 2025, the lowest since February 2019, down from 8 percent in October.

From January’s 23.5 percent rate to just 6.3 percent in November, Ghana engineered an eleven month disinflation streak that pushed inflation to its lowest point since the Consumer Price Index (CPI) was rebased in 2021. The dramatic decline represents one of the most significant disinflation periods in the country’s recent history, outperforming the government’s own 11.9 percent end of year projection.

Food inflation posted one of the steepest declines, easing sharply from 9.5 percent in October to 6.6 percent in November. Government Statistician Alhassan Iddrisu attributed the fall to significant declines in inflation for vegetables, tubers, fish and fruits, categories that had previously exerted upward pressure on household budgets.

Non food inflation also softened, dropping from 6.9 percent to 6.1 percent in November. Inflation for locally produced items fell to 6.8 percent from 8.0 percent, while imported inflation dropped significantly to 5.0 percent from 7.8 percent, due mainly to the relatively stable cedi.

Throughout 2025, the gradual easing of inflation from double digit levels softened cost pressures on households and companies. The cedi’s relative steadiness in the final months brought predictability to importers, exporters, and firms with dollar denominated obligations, allowing businesses to plan with greater confidence and reassess strategies shaped by previous market shocks.

The Bank of Ghana’s monetary policy actions underpinned much of the disinflation momentum, cutting the policy rate by a cumulative 1,000 basis points across its last three decisions, bringing the benchmark rate down to 18 percent. These significant cuts were made possible by improving inflation expectations, declining inflationary momentum, and a stronger Ghanaian cedi which rallied against major currencies.

However, as one measure of stability settles, attention is shifting toward utility tariffs. The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) approved a 9.86 percent increase in electricity tariffs and a 15.92 percent increase in water tariffs, effective January 1, 2026, under its 2026 to 2030 Multi Year Tariff Order (MYTO).

Energy costs, long a critical component of operating budgets, are expected to influence pricing, operational costs, and broader consumer demand. Even modest hikes in electricity can ripple across manufacturing, services, and retail sectors. Water tariff adjustments similarly affect both businesses and households adjusting to new cost structures.

The combination of easing inflation, a steady cedi, and utility tariff adjustments paints a complex picture for businesses entering 2026. Firms that followed market signals closely in 2025, adapting to currency swings and cost pressures, are positioned to navigate these shifts more effectively than those that maintained static strategies.

The inflation trajectory marks a dramatic turnaround from the crisis conditions of 2022 and early 2023. The country had been dealing with a 45 percent depreciation of the cedi against the dollar and inflation rising to a record 54 percent in December 2022. Ghana confronted the reality of a crisis that demanded decisive and coordinated reform.

The Bank of Ghana took bold measures to re anchor monetary discipline, tightening monetary policy and halting financing of the fiscal deficit, which made inflation retreat to 23 percent two years later among other fiscal side policies. The current inflation trajectory demonstrates the effectiveness of sustained policy discipline.

As Ghana enters 2026, the rhythm of the economy moves from reflection to anticipation. Stability in key indicators provides a foundation, while emerging pressures remind stakeholders that planning, monitoring, and adaptation remain central to business resilience. The year ahead presents measured opportunities alongside practical challenges requiring continued vigilance.

The question now is whether the government can maintain the fiscal and monetary discipline that enabled the dramatic inflation reduction while managing the political and social pressures that inevitably accompany utility tariff increases and broader economic reforms. The stability achieved in 2025 provides a platform, but sustaining it will require consistent policy execution throughout 2026.

Morocco vs Tanzania – TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 Round of 16

0

Hosts Morocco and knockout-round debutants Tanzania meet in a high-stakes Round of 16 clash at the Complexe Sportif Prince Moulay Abdellah on 4 January. Kick-off is at 17h00 local time (16h00 GMT).

This is the second AFCON meeting between the two nations, following their group-stage encounter at the 2023 edition. Morocco won that match 3-0 and went on to finish as group winners, while Tanzania ended bottom of the group.

Tanzania are facing a host nation for the second time at AFCON, having previously lost 3-1 to Nigeria in Lagos in their opening match of the 1980 tournament.

Overall, the sides have met eight times in all competitions. Morocco have won seven of those meetings, including the last five in succession, while Tanzania have recorded one victory. There have been no draws. Morocco have scored in all eight meetings and have kept all five clean sheets recorded in the fixture. Tanzania have failed to score in their last four matches against Morocco.

Tanzania’s only win over Morocco came in a 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifier, a 3-1 home victory on 24 March 2013 in Dar es Salaam. Thomas Ulimwengu and a brace from Mbwana Samatta secured the win, while Youssef El Arabi scored Morocco’s consolation goal in the 90th minute. Morocco won the return fixture 2-1 at home in June 2013, though neither team qualified for the tournament in Brazil.

The teams were also drawn together in qualifying for the 2012 AFCON, with Morocco winning 1-0 away and 3-1 at home to qualify ahead of Tanzania. They later met in qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Morocco winning 2-0 away on 21 November 2023, Hakim Ziyech scoring in the 28th minute before Bakari Mwamnyeto put through his own goal in the 54th. Morocco won the return fixture 2-0 in Oujda on 25 March 2025, with goals from Nayef Aguerd in the 51st minute and Brahim Diaz from the penalty spot in the 58th.

Their most recent meeting came in the quarter-finals of the 2024 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship on 22 August 2025, where Morocco went on to win the title after defeating co-hosts Tanzania 1-0, Oussama Lamiloui scoring the winning goal in the 65th minute.

This is Tanzania’s fifth meeting with a North African team at AFCON. They lost their first three such encounters against Egypt in 1980, Algeria in 2019 and Morocco in 2023, before drawing with Tunisia at the current edition. Tanzania have conceded a goal in each of their four AFCON matches against North African opposition.

Morocco are the second team Tanzania have faced twice at AFCON, after Nigeria, whom they met in 1980 and again at the current edition.

Nine people have lost their lives in a devastating head-on collision involving a minibus taxi and a passenger vehicle on the R61 between Engcobo and Cofimvaba in the Eastern Cape.

The crash occurred around 10:30 on Wednesday, leaving the road closed as emergency services rushed to the scene.

‘Heartbreaking’

Eastern Cape Department of Transport spokesperson Unathi Binqose described the incident as heartbreaking, saying emergency teams were still working to assist survivors.

“This is a very devastating and heart-breaking crash that has claimed the lives of nine people. The scene remains very active as Emergency Medical Services are on site, trying to save survivors,” Binqose said.

Eastern Cape Transport MEC Xolile Nqatha expressed deep sadness over the tragedy, noting that it comes at a time when families are preparing to usher in the New Year.

University of Ghana Students Face Sharp Fee Increases for 2025/2026

University of Ghana Students Face Sharp Fee Increases for 2025/2026
University Of Ghana

Students at the University of Ghana (UG) are expressing concern following the release of a provisional fee schedule showing significant increases in academic fees for the 2025/2026 academic year, with increments exceeding 25 percent across all colleges.

The increases, which affect both fresh and continuing students, have sparked urgent calls for university management to clarify the rationale behind the sharp rise. Although the university is yet to officially explain the reasons, the approved fees indicate substantial upward adjustments that many students and families say could worsen financial pressures.

At the College of Humanities, which typically accommodates the largest student body at the university, Level 100 freshmen will pay GH¢3,110 for the 2025/26 academic year, representing a 34 percent increase from the GH¢2,319 charged in the 2024/25 academic year. Continuing students at the college will pay GH¢2,253, reflecting a 27 percent increase from the previous GH¢1,777.

Provisional Fees
Provisional Fees

The University of Ghana School of Law is seeing similar adjustments. Undergraduate freshers under the College of Humanities will pay GH¢3,226, a 33 percent increase from GH¢2,435 last academic year. Continuing law students will see their fees climb from GH¢1,890 to GH¢2,396, a 27 percent rise.

A significant contributor to the increases appears to be steep rises in third party levies. These auxiliary charges, which were GH¢255 last year, have jumped to GH¢767 for freshmen, marking an astonishing 200 percent increase. Continuing students will now pay GH¢455 in third party fees.

The third party charges breakdown includes Students Representative Council (SRC) Hostel Development Levy of GH¢100, a 75th Anniversary Legacy Project contribution of GH¢100, SRC welfare fees of GH¢50, reprographic fees of GH¢5, and an optional Telecel data and airtime package.

The trend of steep fee increases is not confined to the College of Humanities and the School of Law. Other faculties, including the College of Health Sciences, College of Basic and Applied Sciences, and College of Education, have also reported hikes ranging between 25 and 35 percent.

At the College of Health Sciences, medical school freshmen will see notable increases, while pharmacy and nursing students across various levels are facing similar upward adjustments in their fee structures. The College of Basic and Applied Sciences and the College of Education have likewise implemented substantial increases affecting students in science, technology, and education programmes.

Provisional Fees
Provisional Fees

A coalition of student representatives is urging university authorities to provide comprehensive justifications for the rapid increases. They warn that such financial burdens may impose added strain on students and their families, particularly in a period when households are grappling with broader cost of living pressures.

The lack of prior notification about the fee adjustments has emerged as a critical concern among students. Many incoming freshmen and returning students say they are left questioning their financial preparedness as the implications of these increases loom large, just months before the new academic year begins.

The provisional figures, made available to the public, reflect what students describe as a stark reality. Many are now faced with difficult decisions about how to finance their education in the face of increases that, for some programmes, approach or exceed one third of previous costs.

Student groups have indicated they will continue to engage university management and are calling for transparency regarding the specific factors driving the fee hikes. They are also seeking clarity on whether any provisions or support mechanisms will be put in place to assist students from low income backgrounds who may struggle to meet the new fee requirements.

As of now, the University of Ghana management has not issued a detailed public statement explaining the increases or outlining measures to mitigate their impact on students. The provisional schedule remains subject to final approval, though students say the lack of communication has created uncertainty and anxiety about the upcoming academic year.

PURC Says No Turning Back on Tariff Increases Despite Business Concerns

PURC Says No Turning Back on Tariff Increases Despite Business Concerns
Utility Tariff

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has declared there is no turning back on the 2026 to 2030 Multi Year Tariff Order (MYTO), signalling a difficult season ahead for households and businesses across Ghana as electricity and water tariffs rise by 9.86 percent and 15.92 percent respectively.

At meetings with the Trades Union Congress (TUC) held on December 11 and 30, 2025, the Commission reaffirmed that reversing the tariff decision would threaten the stability of the energy and water sectors and weaken the broader economy. Any reversal of the tariff decision would have significant implications, not only for the Commission’s independence but crucially for the stability of the energy and water sectors and the broader Ghanaian economy, the PURC stated.

The new tariffs took effect on January 1, 2026, following months of investment hearings, stakeholder consultations and regional public forums. The Commission announced the adjustments on December 3, citing the need to support utility investment requirements and ensure reliable services while considering the living conditions of consumers.

On paper, the argument centers on sustainability and long term stability. On the ground, however, the impact is already being felt in workshops, factories, offices, and small shops across the country.

For many businesses, especially small and medium sized enterprises, electricity and water are not just utilities but lifelines. Power runs machines, preserves goods, supports digital services, and keeps doors open. Every increase in tariffs quietly chips away at already tight margins. For some, it means cutting back on staff hours. For others, it means passing costs on to customers who are themselves struggling to cope with rising living expenses.

Manufacturers feel the pressure most acutely. From powering machinery to maintaining cold storage and logistics, energy costs sit at the heart of production. Even modest increases can ripple through operations, slowing output or forcing difficult decisions about scale and staffing. For small producers and informal businesses operating with little financial cushion, the margin for error is almost nonexistent.

Service based businesses are not spared either. Hospitals, schools, hotels, restaurants, and retail outlets all depend heavily on reliable electricity and water. As utility bills rise, many are left choosing between raising prices, postponing investment, or compromising service quality, choices that ultimately affect consumers and economic confidence.

The PURC said the adjustments reflect investment needs of power utilities, projected generation inputs and macroeconomic indicators including inflation, the cedi to US dollar exchange rate and the cost of natural gas. The Commission projected a generation mix of 78.79 percent thermal power, 20.90 percent hydro and 0.31 percent renewables for 2026. The Weighted Average Cost of Gas is expected to rise to US$7.8749 per million British thermal units.

The approved exchange rate for the tariff period is 12.0067 Ghana cedis per US dollar, with an inflation benchmark of eight percent. These figures compare to a 2025 baseline exchange rate of 12.3715 cedis and inflation of 12.43 percent. The Commission said the water tariff adjustment was driven by production and sales projections, expected investment requirements and efforts to reduce non revenue water to approximately 43 percent over the period.

For residential electricity customers, lifeline consumers using between zero and 30 kilowatt hours (kWh) per month will see their tariff increase to 88.37 pesewas per kWh, up from 80.43 pesewas. Residential customers consuming zero to 300 kWh will now pay 200.22 pesewas per kWh, compared to the existing 182.24 pesewas. Those consuming 301 kWh and above will pay 264.56 pesewas per kWh, up from 240.81 pesewas.

The new tariffs will remain in place for five years but will be subject to quarterly reviews to account for variables beyond utility control, including fuel costs, exchange rate fluctuations and changes in the generation mix. The PURC said quarterly adjustments aim to preserve the real value of tariffs and maintain the financial viability of service providers.

Despite these realities, the PURC maintains that tariff stability is essential to preventing deeper structural problems in the energy and water sectors. According to the Commission, weakening the financial base of utility providers could lead to worsening outages, unreliable water supply, and a loss of investor confidence, outcomes that would hurt the economy even more in the long run.

Still, the human cost remains difficult to ignore. The Commission acknowledged labour concerns, noting that it had committed to addressing them during the next tariff review window. For many businesses, however, that assurance offers little comfort today, as they grapple with rising operational costs, currency pressures, and slowing consumer demand.

In a joint statement signed in Accra on December 30, 2025, by TUC Secretary General Joshua Ansah and PURC Executive Secretary Shafic Suleman, both parties highlighted the importance of ongoing dialogue to ensure tariff decisions balance affordability, electricity stability, water access, and economic growth for Ghanaian workers.

The TUC has said it will continue to monitor how the new tariffs affect wages and livelihoods and will engage the government on broader cost of living challenges. Yet for business owners across the country, the issue goes beyond wages or policy timelines.

The announcement has drawn mixed reactions from consumer groups and industry stakeholders. Some citizens who participated in public hearings earlier in 2025 expressed concern that higher tariffs would worsen the cost of living and strain household budgets at a time when food, transport and housing costs are already climbing.

The increases come at a particularly sensitive time as they follow a difficult 2025, during which electricity tariffs increased by a combined 18.34 percent, while water charges rose by 4.02 percent. The cumulative effect of successive tariff adjustments over recent years has intensified financial pressure on both households and businesses.

As part of reforms in the new MYTO, the PURC has also introduced a mini grid tariff system. This seeks to support electricity supply to island and remote communities by including their service costs in the Volta River Authority’s revenue requirements, aiming to expand national electricity access from the current 89 percent to full universal coverage.

ICU Ghana Warns Government Against Outright Sale of ECG
Ecg

The Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union of Ghana (ICU-Ghana) has cautioned the government against any approach to private sector participation in the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) that could result in the outright sale of the state owned power distributor.

In a statement issued on January 1, 2026, the General Secretary of ICU-Ghana, Mr. Morgan Ayawine, described ECG as a strategic national asset whose operations are central to the daily lives of households, the functioning of businesses, and the growth of Ghana’s industrial sector.

According to the union, while improving productivity and efficiency within ECG is necessary, particularly as the country works to consolidate recent economic recovery efforts, any reforms must be carefully designed to protect the company’s public interest mandate and long term national value.

Of particular concern is the issue of private sector participation in the Electricity Company of Ghana. As an essential public entity serving a wide spectrum of the Ghanaian populace, government must exercise caution and avoid the outright sale of ECG, while maintaining it as one of the nation’s most vital and indispensable assets, Mr. Ayawine said.

The statement comes amid ongoing debate over the future of ECG, with the government having approved private sector participation in the utility in April 2025 as part of broader reforms to improve billing, revenue collection, and service delivery while reducing technical and commercial losses.

The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has repeatedly denied plans to sell ECG, insisting that the Private Sector Participation framework is not a sale or divestiture but involves strategic deployment of private expertise through multiple concession arrangements.

Workers led by the Public Utilities Workers Union (PUWU) have strongly opposed the move, pointing to a jointly agreed turnaround programme that has reportedly yielded about 90 percent improvement in revenue, drastically reduced system losses, and ensured more stable power supply for consumers. PUWU has called for the turnaround programme to run its full course before considering private sector involvement.

The debate is complicated by historical context. A previous attempt at private sector participation between 2018 and 2020 under the Power Distribution Services arrangement collapsed after the government terminated the concession amid disputes over performance and compliance, heightening worker skepticism toward private involvement in ECG operations.

ICU-Ghana acknowledged the government’s ongoing efforts to stabilise the economy and foster a more positive recovery environment under the reset agenda. However, the union stressed that these gains would only be meaningful if backed by practical and sustainable socio economic policies.

It urged the government to prioritise economic interventions that support industrial expansion and job creation, warning that rising unemployment could pose a serious threat to national development if not urgently addressed.

The positive atmosphere government has created through its economic recovery efforts under the reset agenda must be sustained through the practical demonstration and application of sound socio economic policies that will lead to an improved standard of living for the generality of Ghanaians, the statement noted.

Beyond government policy, the union also appealed to employers across sectors to promote employee friendly working environments that encourage dialogue, industrial peace, and workplace harmony, which it said are essential for sustained productivity and economic growth.

In his New Year message, Mr. Ayawine urged workers across the country to embrace diligence, productivity, and collaboration as Ghana enters 2026, stressing that active participation in national economic activities is vital for growth and development.

Adom Kyei asks members to sell their properties

Ghanaian prophet Adom Kyei has asked all his church members to sell their properties. The popular pastor advised them to sell everything they own and follow him.

He explained that those who take the bold step would be blessed:

Listen to me; sell all your properties and come and buy Adom Nyame, because that is what I am offering tonight. After buying Adom Nyame, people around you will witness what the Lord will do through you. You will also prosper.

Adom Kyei talks about tithes

Prophet Adom Kyei firmly asserted his commitment to integrity, emphasising that he does not fabricate lies or extort money from his congregation:

Reflecting on the numerous testimonies that have been shared in this sanctuary, it becomes evident that if I were to take your offerings and tithes for personal gain, it would suggest that the God I am dedicated to cannot provide for His followers.

Therefore, I encourage you to prioritise your faith: sell your properties if you must, but invest your hearts in Adom Nyame.

He continued:

“I have no intention of extorting money from you, nor will I ever stoop to begging for sustenance. My mission is not to instil fear or anxiety as a means to gain your financial support. I assure you, this is the essence of the Adom Nyame I embody.”

The founder and leader of Reign House Chapel, Prophet Eric Boahen Uche, popularly called Uche, has issued a number of prophecies for the new year, 2026.

Speaking at his church’s Watch Night Service on December 31, 2025, the renowned prophet, who is regarded as a spiritual protégé of Prophet Isaac Owusu Bempah, the founder of Glorious Word Power Ministries, made premonitions concerning Ghana and other countries.

He foretold some happenings involving great personalities in Nigeria, the United States of America and other countries.

Below are some of his prophecies:

1. President Tinubu will be forced to resign

Prophet Uche prophesied that the President of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, would be forced to resign in 2026.

According to him, the West African country would be saddled with an unprecedented number of strike actions, which would force Tinubu to resign.

“If care is not taken, Tinubu, the President of Nigeria, will be forced to resign,” he declared.

2. Donald Trump will run for a 3rd term:

He also prophesied that the President of the United States, Donald Trump, will run for the presidency for a 3rd term.

“I said Donald Trump would become president of America again, and it came to pass. And I’m still saying that Donald Trump will go for a 3rd term.”

3. President Mahama will be forced to run for a 3rd term

Prophet Uche prophesied that President John Dramani Mahama would run for another term in office after his current term ends.

“In the spiritual court, where heaven met, our father John Dramani Mahama must rule Ghana for 8 years and not four years. He has another term to rule in the highest office of Ghana,” he said.

He added, “I told people who are close to me and ‘papa’ about this about eight months ago. I told them that he (Mahama) will be forced to go for another term.”

4. A Ghanaian minister of state will be sacked

He also said that President John Dramani Mahama will sack his first Minister of State in 2026.

5. A former president will die in March

He also indicated that a former President of Ghana is likely to pass on in March 2026.

“Let us pray, Ghana, that in the month of March we will not lose any former President,” he said.

Trump says health is ‘perfect’ amid ageing concerns

0

US President Donald Trump said in a lengthy interview about his health that he takes more aspirin than doctors recommend, uses makeup to cover bruising on his hands, and does not get regular exercise because he finds it “boring”.

Trump also told The Wall Street Journal that he underwent a CT scan in October, after incorrectly telling reporters that he had undergone a more detailed MRI scan.

Trump, 79, is the oldest president inaugurated in US history, and signs of age have been showing. He has at times appeared to fall asleep in meetings and not be able to hear questions.

The Journal said Trump “expressed irritation about the public debate over his health”, which he described as “perfect”.

“Let’s talk about health again for the 25th time,” he said at the start of an “impromptu phone call” as the newspaper prepared to publish a story about Trump’s health.

“My health is perfect,” he added.

Trump said he has taken larger than recommended doses of aspirin for the last 25 years, even as he said it caused him to bruise easily.

“They say aspirin is good for thinning out the blood, and I don’t want thick blood pouring through my heart,” Trump said.

He takes 325mg of aspirin per day, rather than the 81mg dose sometimes recommended by doctors.

“They’d rather have me take the smaller one,” Trump said.

But he does not want to switch routines after so many years. “I’m a little superstitious,” he said.

The president also talked about the medical scan he received at Walter Reed National Medical Center, which he previously said was an MRI scan.

“It wasn’t an MRI,” Trump told the Journal. “It was less than that. It was a scan.”

A doctor for Trump, Navy Capt Sean Barbaella, said in a statement provided to the Journal that Trump had undergone a CT scan, “to definitively rule out any cardiovascular issues” and that the testing revealed no abnormalities.

After Trump was diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency, a common condition in older people, he was advised to wear compression socks but he declined.

“I didn’t like them,” Trump said, adding that he now gets up from his desk more regularly, which has improved swelling in his legs.

Still, the president said he prefers not to practice any form of regular exercise, other than golfing.

“I just don’t like it. It’s boring,” Trump said. “To walk on a treadmill or run on a treadmill for hours and hours like some people do, that’s not for me.”

The president maintained that he has not nodded off during public meetings, saying he closes his eyes at times because he finds it “relaxing”. As for the bruising seen on his hands in some photos, Trump said he now carries makeup in case his hand gets “whacked”.

“I have makeup that’s, you know, easy to put on, takes about 10 seconds,” he said.

Trump said he does not have trouble with his hearing, and when photographers have taken photos of him when he appears to be sleeping, he said “sometimes they’ll take a picture of me blinking”.

“And they’ll catch me with the blink.”

Barbabella said in the statement to the Journal that Trump is in “exceptional health and perfectly suited to execute his duties as Commander in Chief.”

The General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has descended heavily on proponents within the party calling for a third term for President John Dramani Mahama.

Speaking at an event to commemorate the party’s 31st December Revolution at Ada, the General Secretary described party members making such calls as “sycophants” and “boot lickers” who only want the favour of the president.

“These days, it saddens me when I see so much sycophancy creeping into our party.

I see a group of people who, obviously, from every indication, believe that singing the praises of a leader is the only way they can survive.

“And that’s why you hear some of those people even urging statements like there should be a 3rd term. It says nothing but sycophancy, pure sycophancy and boot licking of the highest order,” he fumed.

Fifi Kwetey indicated that no single individual is bigger than the NDC and its values, noting that not even the founder of the NDC, the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, thought of running for the presidency for a third term.

President Mahama will be forced to go for a 3rd term – Prophet Uche prophesies

“Jerry Rawlings, who was the founder of this party, never, at any point, was urged by anybody to go for any 3rd term. You have a bunch of sycophants who today think that all they need to do is sing praises and hope that somehow those praises will get them some opportunities that they are looking for.

“You don’t love our country, you don’t love our party. If you do, you will not be such sycophants. It’s important for us to appreciate that this party was grounded in the need to work for our people. We say cadres may go; cadres may come, but the revolution has come to stay. That simply means it is not about individuals. It’s about us as a collective,” he said.

Bertrand Traoré fined for comments against Ghanaian referee Daniel Laryea

Ghanaian referee Daniel Laryea officiated Burkina Faso’s 1–0 defeat to Algeria Ghanaian referee Daniel Laryea officiated Burkina Faso’s 1–0 defeat to Algeria

Burkina Faso captain Bertrand Traoré has been handed a financial sanction by the Confederation of African Football following his comments against Ghanaian referee Daniel Laryea after the Stallions’ 1–0 defeat to Algeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

CAF confirmed that Traoré was fined $10,000 after appearing before its disciplinary committee to answer charges relating to his post-match remarks, which were judged to be offensive and contrary to the standards expected of a national team captain at a major continental tournament.

The sanction follows Traoré’s public criticism of Laryea, who officiated the Group E encounter. The Sunderland forward questioned several key decisions, including the penalty awarded to Algeria in the first half and the handling of an earlier incident he believed warranted a VAR review in Burkina Faso’s favour.

“I think there was a penalty on me in the first action of the match. The referee didn’t even check VAR,” Traoré said at the time.

CAF stated that while the comments breached disciplinary regulations, the punishment imposed was limited strictly to a monetary fine. No sporting sanctions were applied, meaning Traoré faces no suspension, match ban, or additional disciplinary measures.

During the hearing, the Burkina Faso captain adopted a conciliatory stance, apologising for his remarks and expressing regret for the tone and timing of his comments.

He stressed that his frustration stemmed from the intensity of the moment and that he did not intend to undermine CAF or show disrespect to match officials.

The Burkina Faso Football Federation later confirmed its acceptance of the ruling, noting that the full sanction consists solely of the $10,000 fine.

‘Guy is thrilled to be back at the helm. And to have Jason on board, as well as Vinnie, is going to make for cinematic gold.

‘This project feels so brilliantly British. It’s going to be loud, fast and unapologetically patriotic. Jason and Vinnie are so brilliant together on screen and everyone working on the film was thrilled to hear that Vinnie had signed up.’

Daily Mail has contacted Vinnie’s representatives for comment.

The plot of Viva La Madness is yet to be confirmed, but its source material continues the story of an anonymous London-based dealer X (Jason).

X has put his criminal activities behind him and moved to the Caribbean – only for two British gangsters to stir up trouble when they arrive on the island.

Vinnie has appeared in nearly 100 films since his mate Guy cast him as a brutal debt collector in Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels in 1998.

The former footballer’s latest string of success and fame comes after he rebuilt his troubled life, after battling cancer, alcoholism and grief after losing childhood sweetheart Tanya, who died in 2019 after 25 years of marriage.

From 6:00 PM until the break of dawn, patrons will be immersed in the unforgettable sounds of the 1990s — an era widely regarded as the golden age of music.

Whether you were bumping to Tupac and Biggie, swaying to Brandy and Aaliyah, or busting moves to MC Hammer and TLC, tonight’s event has it all.

Expect a rich selection of classic R&B, hip-hop, highlife, hiplife, pop, and dancehall anthems that defined a generation.

This isn’t just another party but a carefully curated experience.

The 90’s Jam is designed to transport guests to a time when music was bold, lyrics were meaningful, and the vibe was simply unmatched.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Thursday, January 1, David Max-Fugar, General Manager for Sales and Marketing at Multimedia Group Limited, assured listeners that this year’s edition is not only a continuation of last year’s success but a significant upgrade in every aspect.

“Last year, there were concerns about the cabanas. I can assure everybody that those concerns have been fixed. Everything is fixed. It’s very conducive,” he stated.

According to Mr Max-Fugar, feedback from previous attendees has been taken seriously. From comfort to logistics, every detail has been fine-tuned to elevate the patron experience.

“Unfortunately, we don’t have the large numbers we had last year. We have only 13 cabanas, so they are very limited. If you call the number we’ve been sharing, you register and pay for your cabana,” he added.

The same applies to VIP arrangements.

“The VIP tables are thin this year. We want to make sure our patrons get the experience we want to put out there,” Mr Max-Fugar explained.

The dancefloor has been expanded this year to give guests plenty of space to relive their favourite 90s party moves.

And for those worried about the logistics of arriving and parking — rest easy.

“The parking area has been well done. We can take double the number of cars we took last year,” Mr Max-Fugar assured.

Security measures have also been significantly reinforced, with collaboration from local law enforcement.

For patrons arriving on motorbikes, a new policy is in place to ensure everyone’s safety:

“If you’re coming with a motorbike, you’ll need to provide evidence that you’re coming for the event. Once you do that, you’ll be allowed in and directed to a designated parking area. It’s very important, and it’s for the safety of all our patrons.”

So, whether you’re a die-hard 90’s music lover or just looking for the perfect way to kick off 2026 with retro flair, Joy FM’s 90’s Jam is the place to be tonight. Come for the music, stay for the vibes, and leave with unforgettable memories.

Fear and confusion in Nigerian village hit in US strike, as locals say no history of ISIS in area

0

US President Donald Trump announced military action in Nigeria US President Donald Trump announced military action in Nigeria

A day after part of a missile fired by the United States hit their village, landing just meters from its only medical facility, the people of Jabo in northwestern Nigeria are in a state of shock and confusion.

Suleiman Kagara, a resident of this quiet and predominantly Muslim farming community in Tambuwal district of Sokoto state, told CNN he heard a loud blast and saw flames as a projectile flew overhead at around 10 p.m. on Thursday.

Soon after, it came crashing down, exploding on impact with the ground and sending the villagers fleeing in fear.

“We couldn’t sleep last night,” Kagara said. “We’ve never seen anything like this before.”

Kagara did not realise it at the time, but what he was witnessing was part of a US strike that President Donald Trump would later refer to as a “Christmas present” for terrorists.

Not long after the impact in Jabo, Trump declared on Thursday that the US had carried out a “powerful and deadly strike” against ISIS militants in the region, who he accused of “targeting and viciously killing, primarily, innocent Christians, at levels not seen for many years, and even centuries!”

According to US Africa Command, the operation neutralised multiple ISIS militants.

But Trump’s explanation has left Kagara and his fellow villagers scratching their heads.

While parts of Sokoto face challenges with banditry, kidnappings and attacks by armed groups, including Lakurawa – which Nigeria classifies as a terrorist organisation due to suspected affiliations with Islamic State – villagers say Jabo is not known for terrorist activity and that local Christians coexist peacefully with the Muslim majority.

“In Jabo, we see Christians as our brothers. We don’t have religious conflicts, so we weren’t expecting this,” he said.

Bashar Isah Jabo, a lawmaker representing Tambuwal in the state parliament, described the village to CNN as “a peaceful community” that has “no known history of ISIS, Lakurawa, or any other terrorist groups operating in the area.”

He said the projectile had struck a field “approximately 500 meters” from a Primary Health Centre in Jabo and that, while there were no casualties, the incident had “caused fear and panic within the community.”

Nigeria’s Information Ministry later said that the government, in collaboration with the US, had “successfully conducted precision strike operations” targeting ISIS hideouts in the forests of Tangaza district in Sokoto.

However, it also noted that “during the course of the operation, debris from expended munitions fell in Jabo,” and another area in north-central Kwara state – though it stressed there had been no civilian casualties.

The operation in Nigeria follows repeated claims by Trump of a significant threat to Christians in the country, with the president ordering the Pentagon last month to prepare for possible military action.

Nigerian Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar told CNN Friday that he had spoken with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio prior to the strike and that Nigerian President Bola Tinubu had given the “go ahead.”

However, Tuggar also said that this operation was not a religious issue but aimed at ensuring the safety of innocent civilians across the region.

Analysts say religion is just one of multiple factors behind the persistent security challenges Nigeria has faced for many years. Conflicts also arise from communal and ethnic rivalries, as well as tensions between farmers and herders over scarce land and water resources.

Nnamdi Obasi, a senior adviser at the International Crisis Group, said that while the US airstrikes might weaken some armed groups and mark a significant escalation in an offensive that Nigeria’s overstretched military has struggled with for years, “they are unlikely to halt the multi-faceted violence in different parts of the country that is driven largely by failures of governance.”

Ghana to exit IMF programme with dignity – President Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama says Ghana has begun the process of exiting the IMF programme President John Dramani Mahama says Ghana has begun the process of exiting the IMF programme

Ghana is working to reduce its reliance on external financial assistance, with the government focused on restoring economic stability and public confidence after years of slow growth, high inflation, and rising debt.

The country has been under an IMF-supported programme since 2023 to stabilise the economy after inflation surged, the cedi weakened, and fiscal buffers eroded.

According to authorities, Ghana sought IMF support for three main reasons: to stabilise the economy after global shocks, to secure balance-of-payments support, including through concessional financing, and to unlock additional international funding through a catalytic effect.

In his New Year message, President John Dramani Mahama said the government is preparing to exit the IMF programme while safeguarding Ghana’s economic credibility. He said reforms over the past year have strengthened macroeconomic indicators enough to support a gradual withdrawal.

“We are beginning the process of exiting the IMF programme with dignity, not as supplicants, but as partners.”

Ghana’s entry into the IMF programme followed escalating debt and inflation that undermined investor confidence. While the programme helped restore some stability, it also sparked debate over economic sovereignty and the long-term impact of external conditionalities.

President Mahama said Ghana has completed debt renegotiations “on terms that protect our sovereignty while ensuring sustainability” and is rebuilding credibility with international partners.

He added that inflation had fallen from “23% and above by the end of 2024,” the cedi had seen “relative currency stability,” and business confidence was improving — conditions the government says create the foundation for a dignified exit.

Most of the applause and praises of Mahama’s govt AI-generated – Bryan Acheampong

Embrace Article 41 to achieve personal and national goals – Dr Mortoti to Ghanaians

0

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of PIWAK Natural Health, producers of the 3P Garlic Mixture, Dr Prince Nelson Mortoti, has called on Ghanaians to go beyond setting New Year resolutions and focus on consistency, discipline, and civic responsibility as key drivers of success and national development.

In a press release to mark the 2026 New Year, Dr Mortoti noted that while many people begin each year with enthusiasm and determination, that zeal often wanes as the months progress, leading to abandoned or poorly pursued goals.

He stressed that the difference between setting goals and achieving them lies in sustained commitment.

According to him, individuals, particularly those who serve as the backbone of their families, must strive for success through hard work, discipline, and by God’s grace and Allah’s guidance.

He identified Article 41 of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution as a powerful yet underutilised tool that can help shape character, guide behaviour, and promote both personal and national progress.

Dr. Mortoti explained that Article 41 outlines the fundamental duties and obligations of every Ghanaian citizen, emphasising that rights come with responsibilities.

These duties include promoting national unity, respecting and defending the constitution, working conscientiously, protecting public properties, paying taxes, safeguarding the environment, and contributing to community development.

He, therefore, urged tutors and educators to deliberately teach and explain Article 41 to students, so that by the time they complete their education and enter society, they are already grounded in their civic responsibilities.

He also appealed to religious leaders to incorporate the teaching of Article 41 into sermons and lessons in churches, mosques, and traditional homes, adding that homes and workplaces must equally play their part.

“Such a collective effort will help build the Ghana we all desire,” he stated.

Touching on national cohesion, Dr Mortoti noted that Ghana is made up of people from diverse religious, ethnic, political, and ideological backgrounds.

Despite these differences, he said, the constitution demands unity and peaceful coexistence among citizens.

He referenced Romans 12:18, which says, ‘If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone,’ to reinforce the call for harmony and mutual respect.

“As a concerned citizen of Ghana, I urge all Ghanaians to put aside our differences and come together with love, skills, knowledge, strength, and the power endowed within us to work as one nation. United we stand; divided we fall,” he indicated.

Dr. Mortoti stressed that hard work always yields rewards.

He expressed confidence that if citizens perform their duties diligently, Ghana would witness significant improvement across all sectors.

In such a nation, he added, citizens would no longer feel compelled to travel abroad in search of livelihoods but would instead choose to remain and thrive in the abundant opportunities available at home.

Ghana's Caleb Yirenkyi currently plays for FC Nordsjaelland Ghana’s Caleb Yirenkyi currently plays for FC Nordsjaelland

Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion are among the clubs interested in FC Nordsjaelland midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi.

The versatile Ghana international has been sensational since his move to the Danish side from Right to Dream in March 2024.

Yirenkyi has previously been linked to Arsenal, with Brighton now expressing interest in signing the 19-year-old.

He is understood to have a long list of admirers and is currently contracted to Nordsjaelland until the summer of 2030.

As well as making almost 40 appearances across his two seasons at Nordsjaelland, Yirenkyi has also made the step up to international football, earning eight caps for Ghana.

Brighton have previously signed wingers Simon Adingra and Ibrahim Osman from Nordsjaelland, with both also moving to Denmark from the Right to Dream academy.

Yirenkyi has made 17 appearances for FC Nordsjaelland in the ongoing season, scoring once, with four assists to his credit.

Seven bodies recovered, 96 rescued after migrant boat capsizes, Gambia says

Atlantic migration route from the coast of West Africa is one of the deadliest in the world Atlantic migration route from the coast of West Africa is one of the deadliest in the world

Seven bodies were recovered, and 96 people rescued after a boat potentially carrying more than 200 migrants capsized overnight in northwest Gambia, the country’s defence ministry said on Thursday, adding search and recovery operations were continuing.

It was the latest deadly incident along one of the world’s most dangerous migrant routes, frequented mostly by West Africans trying to reach Spain via the Canary Islands.

The boat was reported to have capsized around midnight in the vicinity of a village in Gambia’s North Bank region, and it was later found “grounded on a sandbank,” the defence ministry said in the statement.

The subsequent rescue mission involved three naval speedboats, a coastal patrol vessel and “a local fishing canoe” whose operators volunteered to help, the statement said.

Ten of the rescued migrants were in critical condition and receiving urgent medical attention, it said, without giving their nationalities.

More than 46,000 irregular migrants reached the Canary Islands in 2024, a record, according to the European Union. More than 10,000 died attempting the journey, a 58% increase over 2023, according to the rights group Caminando Fronteras.

However, during the first 11 months of 2025, irregular migration into the European Union along the West African route fell 60%, according to the EU’s border agency Frontex.

The drop is largely due to stronger prevention efforts by departure countries working with EU member states, Frontex has said.

At least 70 people were killed in August 2025 when a boat believed to have departed from Gambia carrying migrants capsized in one of the deadliest accidents in recent years.

Japan PM joins fight for more female toilets in parliament

0

Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is among some 60 female lawmakers petitioning for more women’s toilets in the parliament building to match their growing representation in the legislature.

A record 73 women were elected into the 465-seat Lower House in October 2024, exceeding the previous high of 54 in 2009.

One opposition lawmaker, Yasuko Komiyama, said there were often “long queues in front of the restroom… before plenary sessions start”, and quoted another MP who said she had “given up” going to the toilet before a session began.

There is one female toilet with two cubicles near the plenary chamber, though the entire building itself has nine female toilets with 22 cubicles.

There are a total of 12 men’s toilets with 67 stalls and urinals across the building, according to local media reports.

The current situation is “often inconvenient” because female staff and visitors also share the toilets, said Ms Komiyama from the opposition Constitutional Democratic Party.

“I want to raise my voice and prepare myself for the day when women hold more than 30% of [parliamentary seats] in the future,” she wrote in a post on Facebook.

Japan’s parliament building was built in 1936, a decade before women was given the right to vote in 1945. The first women were appointed to parliament in 1946.

The parliament building is a sprawling three-storey structure, with a central portion that is nine storeys high. The building occupies 13,356 square metres (143,800 sq ft), the equivalent of about two football pitches, with a total floor area of 53,464 square metres.

“If the administration is serious about promoting women’s empowerment, I believe we can count on their understanding and cooperation,” Komiyama said, according to Japanese media.

Chair of the Lower House committee Yasukazu Hamada has “expressed a willingness” to consider the proposal for more women’s toilets, said an Asahi Shimbun report.

The Japanese government earlier set a target of having 30% of leadership roles across all sectors of society held by women by 2020, but at the end of that year the timeframe was quietly pushed back by a decade.

Women currently hold nearly 16% of the seats in the Lower House and about a third – or 42 out of 125 seats – in the Upper House.

Takaichi, who became Japan’s first female leader in October last year, had pledged to raise female representation in her cabinet to levels comparable to Nordic countries, which hold the top spots in terms of female leadership.

Even then, she’d appointed just two other women to her 19-member cabinet.

In Japan, the dearth of women’s restrooms extends beyond the legislative chamber.

Long lines in front of women’s public restrooms are a common sight nationwide.

Former Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba had said his government would look into “enhancing women’s restroom facilities” to make Japan a society where “women can live their lives with peace of mind”.

Around 40 people killed, 100 injured in fire at Swiss ski resort bar

0

Around 40 people were killed and 115 injured when a fire ripped through a crowded bar during a New Year’s Eve party in the upscale Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana, officials said on Thursday.

Police said the fire broke out at 1:30 a.m. (0030 GMT) as revellers were celebrating in a bar called Le Constellation in the resort in southwestern Switzerland, which locals said was popular with teenagers.

Swiss President Guy Parmelin described the disaster as “one of the worst tragedies our country has ever known” and said most of the dead were young people.

The cause of the blaze, which was initially reported as an explosion, remained unclear but authorities said the fire appeared to be an accident rather than an attack.

Authorities warned that naming the victims or establishing a definitive death toll would take time because many of the bodies were badly burned. Experts were using dental and DNA records to try to identify the dead.

SCENES OF PANIC

Video footage verified by Reuters showed fire spreading from the building, and witnesses described scenes of panic and confusion as people rushed to get out.

“There were people screaming, and then people lying on the ground, probably dead,” said 21-year-old Samuel Rapp, who saw the aftermath of the fire. “They had jackets over their faces.”

The head of the local canton’s police, Frederic Gisler, said around 40 people were presumed to be dead and 115 were injured, most of them seriously. He said it was too early to give details on the identity of the dead and injured but Italian authorities said 6 Italians were still missing and 13 in hospital.

Two young French women who said they were in the bar told France’s BFM TV that they saw the fire start in the basement section of the club after a bottle containing “birthday candles” was held up too close to the wooden ceiling.

“The fire spread across the ceiling super quickly,” one of the two women, who identified themselves as Emma and Albane, told BFM TV. The pair said they were able to climb a narrow staircase to the ground floor and escape the building. Minutes later, the fire had reached the ground floor too,” they said.

BFM showed video of a waitress carrying a champagne bottle with a lit “fountain candle” through the bar, one of many in Crans-Montana, a fashionable ski centre with an array of boutiques, luxury hotels and restaurants. But the footage did not show the fire breaking out.

Local prosecutor Beatrice Pilloud said an investigation had been opened into the blaze at the bar, which Swiss company records showed was owned by a French couple, but she said it was too early to comment on any possible safety failures.

“There are still many circumstances to be clarified… The most likely scenario at present is that a widespread fire caused an explosion,” she told a press conference.

VICTIMS FROM SEVERAL COUNTRIES

Witnesses said many of those celebrating in the bar appeared to be from different countries. Foreign governments were calling around to establish whether their nationals were among the victims but were facing a lengthy process because the severity of the burns had rendered identification challenging, one European official said.

“We met the families this afternoon and it’s terrible because to be in front of them with all their fear and apprehension and terrible anxiety and we don’t have all the answers. And we won’t have them straight away because identifying them will take time. It’s a terrible situation on the ground. Unimaginable,” Mathias Reynard, president of the Valais cantonal government, told Reuters, his voice breaking.

Eight French people were missing, the French foreign ministry said, adding that it could not rule out that French nationals were among the dead.

French President Emmanuel Macron spoke to his Swiss counterpart to offer assistance. Three survivors of the fire have been moved to French hospitals and further transfers were under way, the ministry added.

Italy’s ambassador to Switzerland, Gian Lorenzo Cornado, told Sky TG24 that local authorities had told him the fire was started by someone letting off a firework inside the bar.

Witnesses described the injured being treated in improvised triage centres set up in a nearby bar and in a branch of UBS bank and said many suffered after coming out of the heat of the bar into the freezing night air.

“And then it was just ambulances coming back and forth as much as possible,” said Dominic Dubois, who witnessed the frantic scenes as the bodies were brought out.

Video footage showed lines of ambulances queuing and helicopters landing to take victims to nearby hospitals and specialist burn units in other Swiss cities, including Lausanne and Zurich. Switzerland’s neighbours, France, Germany and Italy, also offered to treat victims in their own centres.

On Thursday morning, footage from the street outside showed the area cordoned off, with forensic tents behind white screens set up in front of the bar.

Hundreds of people paid their respects to the victims at the top of the road in front of the scene on Thursday evening. Dozens left flowers or lit candles on a makeshift altar in front of the police cordon as a large crowd stood in silence in the frosty night.

Crans-Montana is due to host next year’s Alpine World Ski Championships. Swiss officials said the fire was unprecedented in Switzerland.

“What was meant to be a moment of joy turned, on the first day of the year in Crans-Montana, into mourning that touches the entire country and far beyond,” Parmelin said on the social media platform X.

Ga Mantse declares war on fishing industry child labour

0

Ga Mantse King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II has announced a stringent legislative agenda aimed at eradicating child labour in the fishing industry.

The Ga king revealed that new traditional by-laws are being drafted to criminalise the practice of engaging children in commercial fishing during school hours, with a focus on holding parents and guardians legally accountable.

The announcement was made during the 2026 Kinka Blonya, an annual New Year children’s festival held on Thursday, January 1, 2026.

Addressing a large gathering of children, parents, and traditional leaders, the Ga Mantse made it clear that the era of choosing the high seas over the classroom is coming to an end.

Once the by-law is ratified, parents who allow or force their children into the fishing trade at the expense of their education will face immediate arrest and prosecution.

“All the traditional authorities in the Ga State have come together to actively promote education. A time is nearing when fishing by children at the expense of education will be criminalised,” the Ga Mantse stated emphatically.

To ensure that poverty does not remain a barrier to this educational mandate, he highlighted significant investments being made by the Office of the Ga Mantse.

This includes a massive scholarship scheme designed to cater to the most vulnerable families within the coastal communities.

The King noted that with these resources available, the state will no longer tolerate the sight of school-aged children at the landing beaches during school hours.

“We are at a point where prioritising education in the Ga state is non-negotiable. We are providing over 1000 scholarships; therefore, parents have no excuse to enrol their kids in schools. Let’s all come together and raise the Ga Children for the future,” he added.

This initiative is not merely a legal directive but a strategic socio-economic intervention. By awarding approximately a thousand scholarships, the traditional leadership seeks to create a new generation of professionals—doctors, engineers, and entrepreneurs—hailing from the Ga community.

The Ga Mantse stressed that safeguarding the future of the state requires a collective shift in mindset, where the long-term benefits of a degree outweigh the short-term gains of a daily catch.

The traditional council is expected to collaborate with the Ghana Police Service and local government authorities to enforce these new regulations.

Key highlights of the upcoming enforcement include:

  • Beach Patrols: Monitoring landing sites to identify children out of school.
  • Parental Accountability: Legal summons for guardians of children found engaged in labour.
  • Scholarship Verification: Ensuring that recipients of the 1,000+ scholarships maintain consistent attendance and academic performance.

OMCs slash fuel prices as cedi gains

0

Motorists have received a welcome New Year gift as several Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) began implementing marginal reductions in ex-pump fuel prices at the commencement of the January pricing window.

The price cuts, which took effect in the early hours of the New Year, signify a continued downward trend in petroleum costs, offering much-needed breathing room for both commercial and private transport users.

Market leader Star Oil was among the first to adjust its digital displays, setting a competitive benchmark for the industry. The company’s latest price list reflects a significant dip in costs across its major products:

  • Petrol: Now selling at GH¢10.86 per litre.
  • Diesel: Priced at GH¢11.96 per litre.
  • RON 95: Positioned at GH¢13.56 per litre.

Star Oil management noted that the decision to lower prices was a direct result of a “favourable domestic and external cost environment.”

Specifically, the company cited the recent appreciation of the Ghana cedi and a slump in international refined product prices as the primary drivers allowing them to pass savings onto the Ghanaian consumer.

The current reductions may only be the tip of the iceberg for January.

The Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC) has projected a robust outlook for the month, suggesting that competitive pressures will force more OMCs to follow suit in the coming days.

In its January pricing outlook, COMAC provided a breakdown of the expected percentage declines:

  • Petrol: Projected to fall by up to 4.80%.
  • Diesel: Estimated to drop by approximately 3.77%.
  • LPG: Expected to see a reduction of roughly 2.19%.

The relief at the pump is being fueled by two major factors.

First, the Ghana Cedi has shown remarkable resilience against the US Dollar in recent weeks, reducing the landing cost for importers. Second, global refined petroleum markets have seen a surplus, leading to lower benchmark prices.

COMAC explained that these anticipated cuts reflect a “favourable domestic and external cost environment,” noting that lower global prices and a stronger local currency have significantly eased the exchange-rate pressures that typically drive up ex-pump pricing.

For commercial drivers—locally known as Trotro operators—the reduction is a vital reprieve. With fuel being a major operational cost, these marginal decreases help stabilize transport fares, which in turn curbs food price inflation.

Industry analysts suggest that if the cedi maintains its current trajectory and international crude prices remain below $80 per barrel, Ghanaians could see even more substantial relief by the second pricing window in mid-January.

Prophet Eric Boahen Uche (L) says President John Dramani Mahama (R) has another term to serve Prophet Eric Boahen Uche (L) says President John Dramani Mahama (R) has another term to serve

The Founder-Leader of Creator’s House Chapel, Prophet Eric Boahen Uche, popularly referred to as Prophet Uche, has prophesied that President John Dramani Mahama will serve another term in office after his current term ends.

According to him, it has been decided in the spiritual realm that President Mahama should go for another term.

Prophet Uche, who is regarded as a spiritual protégé of Prophet Isaac Owusu Bempah, the founder of Glorious Word Power Ministries, indicated that Mahama would be forced to run for the presidency again, and he would win.

“In the spiritual court, where heaven met, our father John Dramani Mahama must rule Ghana for 8 years and not four years. He has another term to rule in the highest office of Ghana,” he said.

Around 40 dead in Swiss ski resort bar fire, police say

0

Around 40 people have died after a fire ripped through a bar in a ski resort in southern Switzerland, police have said. A further 115 people are injured, many of them “severely”.

The fire broke out at around 01:30 (00:30 GMT) during new year celebrations in a bar called Le Constellation in Crans-Montana.

Officials investigating the incident have not confirmed any cause, but categorically ruled out an attack.

People from multiple countries have been affected. Regional police commander Frédéric Gisler said the priority in the coming days was to identify those who had died “so that their bodies can be returned rapidly” to their families.

Thirteen helicopters, 42 ambulances and 150 emergency responders were sent overnight to the scene of the fire in the Valais region, which is popular with tourists.

Most of the injured experienced severe burns and 60 people were sent to Sion hospital in Valais, with a “significant number” in a critical condition, Regional governor Mathias Reynard said.

Its intensive care unit was at full capacity and Reynard said the local community must take extra care to avoid needing hospital treatment unnecessarily.

“We are painfully aware that identifying the bodies, as well as the injured, may still take a terribly long time for the families involved,” Reynard added.

Some people have been taken to hospitals in other Swiss cities including Lausanne and Zurich which have specialist burns units.

A spokesperson for Lausanne University Hospital said they were treating 22 patients with burn injuries, while Zurich University Hospital said it was treating 12 patients for burns.

Some patients were transferred to Geneva University Hospitals where they were being treated for severe, “third degree” burns, and were “very young… between 15 and 25 years old”, Dr Robert Larribau told the BBC’s World Tonight programme.

“The fire broke out so intensely that burns can be internal. People breathed toxic smoke into the lungs,” Dr Larribau said.

The president of the UK Association of Fire Investigators, Richard Hagger, described the “flashover” effect believed to have made the blaze so deadly.

“You’ll start with a fire, the flames and the thermal radiation will go to the ceiling level and mushroom out across,” he told The World Tonight.

“That thermal radiation then travels downwards on to other fuel packages, such as furniture, tables, raises the temperature to the point when they thermally decompose and produce flammable gas.

“And then that gas ignites, but it ignites at a fairly rapid rate. So the room, in effect, becomes a full room on fire within a matter of seconds.”

The Italian Foreign Ministry told the BBC that 16 Italian nationals were currently missing, and between 12 and 15 others were receiving treatment in hospital.

The French foreign ministry said eight of its citizens were missing and that it could not rule out that French nationals were among the dead.

French media reported that at least two of the injured were French nationals.

Three Italian nationals were being evacuated to Milan’s Niguarda hospital where there was a major burns unit, Italian councillor Guido Bertolaso said.

They have burns across “30-40% of their bodies”, he told reporters, and they remained intubated, but “the fact they could be moved is a good sign”.

The precise number of dead and injured is not yet known, nor their nationalities but officials have confirmed that several nationalities were involved.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday evening, officials said they did not know how many people were in the bar when the fire broke out.

State councillor Stéphane Ganzer described the bar as having a “young festive population” during the New Year’s Eve party.

Attorney General Beatrice Pilloud has said an investigation was under way “to identify the circumstances which caused this dramatic situation to occur”.

She was asked by journalists at the press conference about rumours that bottles of champagne carrying flares might have been the cause of the blaze, and whether the staircases were “very narrow”.

She replied that she could not confirm anything while the investigation is ongoing.

Ms Pilloud said the staircases did appear to be narrow, but investigations would assess whether they were in line with requirements.

She said “several hypotheses” for the cause of the blaze have been put forward, and the favoured theory was a “general fire which caused conflagration” – a large fire that causes a lot of damage, rather than an explosion.

Several witnesses have been interviewed, she said, and phones have also been recovered for analysis.

“At no time is there question of any attack”, she said.

Work was ongoing to identify the victims and return bodies to families as quickly as possible, Ms Pilloud said, adding: “To do that there is significant work which needs to be carried out. And this significant work will require the closure of the district.”

The Italian ambassador to Switzerland, Gian Lorenzo Cornado, said it would take weeks to identify the dead.

A helpline has been set up for families: +41 848 112 117

The fire was “one of the worst tragedies that our country has experienced,” Swiss President Guy Parmelin told reporters.

Local people gathered to pay tribute to the dead and injured at a vigil at Montana Station Church on Thursday evening, and floral tributes were laid near the scene of the fire.

Crans-Montana is a luxury ski resort, famous in the 1980s for hosting the World Cup skiing.

Le Constellation, which has been around for decades, has an upstairs with TV screens where people go and watch football matches, and a large bar downstairs for drinking and dancing.

The UK Foreign Office said its “thoughts are with all those injured and killed in the terrible tragedy” and consular staff were on standby to provide support to any British nationals affected.

King Charles said he and his wife Queen Camilla were “greatly saddened” to learn of the fire, and that it was “utterly heartbreaking that a night of celebration for young people and families instead turned to such nightmarish tragedy”.

French President Emmanuel Macron said France was receiving the injured from Crans-Montana to its hospitals.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the EU was working with Swiss authorities to get medical help to victims through the EU’s civil protection mechanism.

Hands off the gold market! – Small-scale miners defend GoldBod; slam NDC, NPP MPs

Miners call on lawmakers to focus on supporting Sammy Gyamfi's Goldbod Miners call on lawmakers to focus on supporting Sammy Gyamfi’s Goldbod

The Ghana National Association of Small-Scale Miners (GNASSM) has issued a caution to Parliament, urging it to protect the recent progress made in the domestic gold market and not allow it to be undermined by external influences or short-term political interests.

The call follows a recent press conference by the Minority in Parliament, which questioned aspects of the national gold trading programme.

In a press statement released today, Thursday, January 1, 2025, GNASSM expressed deep concern over the political debate, stating that it is creating adverse effects and derailing miners from their core work of contributing to the national economy.

“GNASSM urges all political actors to safeguard the hard-won gains made in the artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) gold trade rather than undermine them for short-term political interests,” the statement said.

According to the miners, the system has been successful in its implementation.

It cited changes including the exclusion of foreign traders from direct dealings, support for ASM miners, competitive market pricing and real-time pricing, all of which the association argues serve the interests of ASM miners.

Sammy Gyamfi responds to Minority over alleged $214 million BoG losses

General Secretary Godwin N. Amarh, who signed the statement, highlighted the broader benefits of the current system.

He noted that the Goldbod’s structure has enhanced national capacity to purchase gold locally, which in turn helps reduce smuggling and associated illegal activities such as money laundering.

“Today, the ASM gold market and the small-scale mining space are largely controlled by Ghanaians, facilitating the build-up of domestic capital.

“In the medium term, this will support the growth and expansion of small-scale mines into larger operations, thereby strengthening the national economy and improving the social conditions of Ghanaians,” the statement read.

The association urged lawmakers to focus on supporting Goldbod and related institutions to strengthen Ghana’s foreign exchange reserves and economic space, rather than engaging in debates that destabilise the market.

“GNASSM therefore respectfully cautions politicians on all sides: allow miners and legitimate gold traders to conduct their business within the current orderly and transparent framework.

“We therefore don’t expect a debate at this stage but support to build the gold and related sector. We also expect a united front that focuses on support for the Goldbod and other institutions to address our foreign exchange and reserves needs to give us the space to develop Ghana,” it added.

The body thus called on politicians to allow miners and legitimate traders to operate within the existing orderly framework for the benefit of the nation.

Around 40 killed, 100 injured in fire at Swiss ski resort bar

Ghana Olympic Committee President Ben Nunoo Mensah praised the awards for their motivational impact on boxers and stakeholders, emphasizing that recognition drives athletes to perform at their best.

Cartel Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Cartel Group whose subsidiaries include real estate, construction, and logistics companies, focuses its mission on improving living standards for vulnerable people in deprived communities across Ghana. Founded by Henry Halm Owoo, the foundation provides support including access to quality education and healthcare, as well as provision of basic human needs and social amenities.

The Boxing Ghana Awards represents an increasingly important fixture on Ghana’s sporting calendar, providing structured recognition for athletes, coaches, officials, media personalities, and promoters who contribute to the sport’s development. As corporate sponsorship grows and the event gains prominence, stakeholders hope it will continue motivating excellence across all levels of Ghana boxing while attracting greater investment into the sport’s infrastructure and promotion.

Police Arrest Suspect in Adabraka Gold Cash Robbery

Police Arrest Suspect in Adabraka Gold Cash Robbery
Arrest

The Ghana Police Service has arrested a suspect in connection with a violent daylight armed robbery in which GH₵7.5 million was stolen from a vehicle transporting proceeds from a gold transaction in Adabraka, Accra, authorities announced Wednesday.

The suspect, identified as Salim Mohammed, also known as Fawata, was apprehended on November 20, 2025, at a hospital in Ashaiman where he had gone to seek medical attention. The arrest, announced by the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department, Commissioner of Police Lydia Yaako Donkor, came after months of intelligence-driven operations and marks what police describe as a significant breakthrough in the case.

The robbery occurred on November 2, 2024, when armed men attacked a vehicle carrying cash from a gold transaction that was being transported to a bank. The assault happened in broad daylight at Adabraka Market, sending shockwaves through one of Accra’s busiest commercial districts.

Preliminary investigations reveal that Mohammed and his accomplices, armed with AK-47 assault rifles, intercepted the victim’s vehicle and fired multiple shots to disperse bystanders. During the attack, the driver of the vehicle sustained injuries, allowing the assailants to escape with the cash. Eyewitnesses reported that approximately four masked and heavily armed men carried out the operation, with some describing how the robbers scattered money in the air to create confusion and keep people away from the scene.

Police say the suspect is currently in custody assisting with investigations. A nationwide manhunt has been launched to apprehend the remaining suspects, while efforts are ongoing to recover the stolen funds. Authorities have appealed to the public to provide any credible information that could help arrest the remaining accomplices, requesting that such information be reported to the nearest police station.

The case highlights persistent security concerns surrounding cash-in-transit operations in Ghana, particularly within sectors handling high-value commodity transactions. The gold trade, a major driver of Ghana’s economy, relies heavily on physical cash movements, creating vulnerabilities that criminal networks have repeatedly exploited.

For businesses operating in the jewellery and precious metals sectors, the incident underscores the urgent need for enhanced security protocols. Industry stakeholders have called for stronger collaboration between commercial enterprises, financial institutions, and law enforcement agencies to address gaps in cash-handling practices. Security experts advocate for increased use of secure cash-in-transit services, comprehensive insurance coverage, and accelerated adoption of digital payment alternatives to reduce exposure to violent crime.

The arrest comes during a period of heightened police focus on armed robbery syndicates operating across the Greater Accra region. On the same day police announced the Adabraka robbery arrest, authorities revealed they had also detained five members of a separate armed robbery syndicate involved in street, residential, and workplace robberies across multiple communities including Oyibi, Spintex, East Legon Hills, Ashaiman, and Kasoa.

The gold sector’s growth trajectory makes such security improvements increasingly critical. As investment flows into gold mining and trading operations, the industry faces mounting pressure to modernize security infrastructure and reduce reliance on vulnerable cash-based transaction systems. Financial technology providers have begun offering specialized solutions for the precious metals trade, including real-time tracking systems, secure digital payment platforms, and blockchain-based verification tools designed to reduce both fraud and physical security risks.

For Ghana’s business climate, the successful arrest demonstrates the capacity of intelligence-led policing to tackle sophisticated criminal operations, yet the year-long gap between the robbery and the breakthrough also illustrates the challenges law enforcement faces in preventing such attacks. The case serves as a stark reminder that as Ghana’s gold industry expands, security infrastructure must evolve in parallel to protect both businesses and the broader economy from organized criminal threats.

Pastor Mensa Otabil delivers New Year Message, declares 2026 the Kingdom Year

0

Worshippers gathered at ICGC Christ Temple East on the night of December 31 for the church’s 2025 Crossover Service, ushering in the new year in an atmosphere of thanksgiving, worship, prayer, and spiritual consecration.

Delivering the New Year Message, Pastor Mensa Otabil reminded congregants that God’s presence remains constant in every season of life, assuring them of divine protection, guidance, and hope as they stepped into 2026, which he declared the Kingdom Year.

Declaring 2026 as the Kingdom Year, Pastor Otabil called on believers to align their lives with God’s rule, authority, and purpose. He urged congregants to make God’s Kingdom central in every area of life—personal decisions, family, work, and relationships—assuring them that when God’s reign is prioritized, His will, provision, and order are manifested.

The service opened with a call to thanksgiving drawn from Psalm 136:1–9, which Pastor Otabil described as a biblical pattern for expressing gratitude to God. Leading the congregation through the passage, he highlighted its repeated refrain—“for His mercy endures forever”—and encouraged worshippers to offer their own heartfelt thanksgiving in recognition of God’s goodness and faithfulness.

Expounding on the declaration “God Is With Us,” Pastor Otabil addressed the realities of life’s changing seasons, noting that while God’s presence is often easily recognized in moments of joy, progress, and abundance, it remains just as real during times of difficulty, uncertainty, and challenge.

He explained that God’s assurance to His people is revealed in two key ways: God holds His people, and God leads them. According to him, God’s “holding” represents a firm and protective grip that keeps believers safe even in the most difficult situations, while God’s “leading” involves granting wisdom, direction, and insight to navigate out of adversity.

Referencing Psalm 46:1, Pastor Otabil reminded the congregation that “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble,” urging worshippers to enter the new year without fear and with confidence in God’s unfailing care.

He further encouraged congregants not to interpret hardship as abandonment, emphasizing that God often guides His people through challenges by ordering their steps and providing wisdom, strategy, and timely ideas rather than instant deliverance.

Drawing on the message of Christmas, Pastor Otabil reminded worshippers that Jesus Christ, Emmanuel—God with us—is the ultimate expression of God’s nearness, assuring believers that God’s presence is personal, active, and enduring.

The service climaxed with intense worship, Holy Communion, and an Anointing Service, as individuals and families consecrated their lives, plans, and aspirations to God for the year ahead.

Crossover 2025 at ICGC Christ Temple East was more than a transition into a new calendar year; it was a powerful declaration of faith, gratitude, and confidence in God as a refuge, a guide, and an ever-present help for His people throughout 2026 and beyond.

Ghanaian Businesses Face VAT Relief Alongside Rising Utility Costs

Ghanaian Businesses Face VAT Relief Alongside Rising Utility Costs
Local Businesses

Ghanaian businesses are entering 2026 navigating a blend of tax relief and rising operational expenses, as Value Added Tax (VAT) reforms take effect alongside significant electricity and water tariff increases announced by regulators.

The year opens with inflation at 6.3 percent in November and the cedi trading at approximately GH₵10.51 per U.S. dollar on January 1, offering relative stability after months of currency volatility. For companies and investors, these indicators provide clearer ground for planning, yet the first quarter brings immediate financial pressures.

VAT reforms, effective January 1 under the Value Added Tax Act 2025, raise the registration threshold for businesses from GH¢200,000 to GH¢750,000, eliminate the COVID-19 Health Recovery Levy, and recoup the National Health Insurance Levy and Ghana Education Trust Fund levies into the VAT base. The Ghana Revenue Authority describes the changes as measures designed to ease compliance, improve cash flow, and encourage formal sector participation. For small and medium enterprises, these reforms bring tangible administrative relief and lower effective tax rates at the start of the fiscal year.

However, the relief arrives with offsetting costs. The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission has implemented its 2026 to 2030 Multi-Year Tariff Order, and electricity and water bills are rising sharply. Electricity rates for lifeline users consuming between zero and 30 kilowatt hours per month have climbed 9.86 percent to 88.37 pesewas per kilowatt hour, while water charges for households consuming up to five cubic meters have jumped 15.92 percent to 612.25 pesewas per cubic meter. For businesses and consumers, the new year begins with higher operating and living costs, challenging budgets from day one.

Stakeholders across sectors have raised concerns about the tariff increases. Labour groups warn that rising utility bills could erode the 9 percent wage adjustment approved for public sector workers in 2026. The Trades Union Congress issued an ultimatum this week demanding government revise the wage package upward to offset utility costs, threatening nationwide mobilization if authorities refuse. Consumer advocates call for efficiency improvements within utilities before imposing additional financial burdens on households already stretched by inflation.

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission defended the tariff adjustments as necessary to support utility investment needs, maintain sector financial stability, and ultimately protect consumer interests. Commission officials argue that without adequate tariff levels, electricity and water providers cannot fund infrastructure improvements, maintain existing systems, or expand service coverage to underserved communities. The regulator said quarterly reviews will continue throughout the five-year period to account for factors including fuel prices, exchange rate movements, and changes in power generation mix.

For the Ghana Revenue Authority, the VAT reforms represent a comprehensive restructuring of the country’s consumption tax framework. The International Monetary Fund has advocated for these changes as part of broader fiscal consolidation efforts under Ghana’s Extended Credit Facility program. By raising the registration threshold substantially, authorities expect to concentrate enforcement resources on larger taxpayers who account for the bulk of VAT collections, rather than pursuing small traders whose contributions remain minimal relative to administrative costs involved.

The timing of both reforms coincides with Ghana’s broader economic recovery efforts following debt restructuring and fiscal adjustments implemented during 2024 and 2025. Government officials describe the VAT overhaul as essential to creating a business-friendly environment that encourages investment and economic expansion while maintaining revenue adequacy.

For Ghanaian businesses, the start of 2026 presents a balancing act. Companies must navigate VAT relief, monitor utility costs, and factor in inflation and currency stability as they plan operations and investments. The nation’s economic story at the dawn of the year is one of contrasts, where relief is intertwined with fresh pressures, creating what industry observers call a true mixed package for Ghana’s businesses and households.

TUC and PURC Agree on Dialogue Over Utility Tariff Impact

PURC Says No Turning Back on Tariff Increases Despite Business Concerns
Utility Tariff

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) and the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) have agreed to deepen collaboration to address the impact of the 2026 to 2030 Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO) on workers and the Ghanaian economy. The agreement follows meetings held on December 11 and 30, 2025, where both institutions deliberated on PURC’s announcement of the new MYTO, which takes effect on January 1, 2026.

Ghana’s public utilities regulatory commission has approved a 9.86 percent increase in the electricity tariff and a 15.92 percent increase in the water tariff, effective January 1, 2026, under its 2026 to 2030 MYTO. The PURC conducted a mandatory major Multi-Year Tariff Review for the 2026 to 2030 period, as required every three to five years under the PURC Act, 1997 (Act 538).

In a joint statement, the TUC and PURC said discussions centred on the implications of the tariff adjustments for the cost of living, electricity supply stability, and investment in the power and water sectors. The joint statement was signed in Accra on December 30, 2025, by TUC Secretary General Joshua Ansah and PURC Executive Secretary Shafic Suleman.

The PURC emphasised that reversing the tariff decision could compromise its independence and affect the stability of the energy and water sectors, as well as the broader economy. The Commission maintained that cost reflective tariffs are necessary to ensure reliable service delivery, maintain infrastructure, and attract investment into the utilities sector.

However, the Commission acknowledged the concerns raised by the TUC and pledged to consider them during the next tariff review. The regulator offered assurances that affordability considerations remain part of the regulatory process going forward.

The TUC emphasized the immediate impact of the tariff adjustments on workers and stated it will continue to monitor their effects on salaries and wages. The Congress indicated that the outcome of this monitoring exercise will inform its subsequent course of action.

The Secretary General of the TUC, Joshua Ansah, had earlier stated that the Steering Committee of the TUC deliberated extensively on the tariff increment decision, including the processes followed by the PURC. Ansah questioned why workers should pay for the new tariff increment that comes into effect on January 1, 2026, when their meagre nine percent pay adjustment will be paid at the end of January.

The joint statement indicated that the TUC shall engage the government on the current wage levels and their impact on the cost of living circumstances of the Ghanaian worker. This underscores concerns that wage growth has not kept pace with rising utility and household costs.

Both parties highlighted the importance of ongoing dialogue to ensure tariff decisions balance affordability, electricity stability, water access, and economic growth for Ghanaian workers. The engagements highlighted the importance of continued dialogue and collaboration to ensure that tariff decisions are made in a manner that safeguards electricity stability, improves water access, economic stability, and affordability while addressing the concerns of workers.

According to the PURC, the increase was necessary to align tariffs with the investment needs of the Volta River Authority (VRA), the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) and other utilities. The Commission evaluated each utility’s regulated asset base to determine the capital expenditure (CAPEX) required between 2026 and 2030, ensuring providers can maintain infrastructure and improve service reliability.

The PURC used an exchange rate of GH¢12.0067 per United States dollar and an inflation benchmark of eight percent for the 2026 to 2030 period, compared to the 2025 baseline of GH¢12.3715 and 12.43 percent inflation. The share of thermal power will rise from 70.75 percent in 2025 to 78.79 percent during the tariff period, while the share of hydro power will fall from 28.80 percent to 20.90 percent.

The 2026 to 2030 MYTO introduces the integration of mini grids into the national tariff framework, reflecting the PURC’s goal of expanding universal access to electricity, especially in island and lakeside communities. Quarterly adjustments will continue during the tariff period to account for variables beyond utility control, currency stability, inflation, fuel prices and the generation mix.

Despite PURC’s justification, many consumers and civil society groups have voiced strong opposition to the increases. Residents at public hearings argued that higher tariffs would worsen the cost of living, strain small businesses, and disproportionately affect low income households.

The agreement between TUC and PURC represents an effort to balance worker welfare with the financial sustainability of the energy and water sectors. Both institutions have committed to continued collaboration as the new tariff cycle takes effect, with the TUC maintaining its position that wage adequacy must be addressed alongside utility cost increases.

Ghana Cedi Defies Analyst Forecasts with Strong 2025 Performance
Dollar And Cedi

The Ghana Cedi has closed 2025 with a performance that confounded market analysts and research institutions, appreciating significantly against major currencies after predictions of steep depreciation. The United States dollar to Ghana Cedi exchange rate fell to 10.95 on December 30, 2025, with the Ghanaian Cedi strengthening 3.46 percent over the past month and up by 25.51 percent over the last 12 months.

Fitch Solutions predicted the Ghana Cedi would end 2025 at GH¢15.50 to one US dollar, with an annual average of GH¢15.30 per dollar. This was far higher than the GH¢14.00 end of year forecast by Absa Bank. Databank Research projected the cedi would close 2025 around GH¢17.70 with a potential deviation of plus or minus GHp20.

However, the currency defied these projections dramatically. The official Bank of Ghana rate stands around GH¢10.45 to the dollar as the new year begins, while forex bureau rates average approximately GH¢12.10. The currency is perceived to have appreciated by over 30 percent in 2025, making it one of the world’s best performing currencies for the year.

Fitch Solutions later revised its end of 2025 forecast of the cedi to dollar rate to GH¢13.0, from its previous projection of GH¢15.5 to one American greenback. According to the United Kingdom based firm, its assumption was based on the local currency appreciating by 16 percent between late April 2025 and the middle of May 2025.

The remarkable turnaround represents a departure from the currency’s historical pattern of depreciation. For years, analysts and research institutions expected the cedi to lose significant value by year end, basing their models on past performance and structural economic challenges. The 2025 outcome has forced a reassessment of these assumptions.

In its report dubbed High Gold Prices Will Shield Ghanaian Economy From Tariff Fallout, Fitch Solutions said it expected the Bank of Ghana (BoG) to focus on keeping the cedi stable, facilitated by elevated gold prices. The firm forecast that gold prices would average a record US$3,100 per ounce in 2025.

Coupled with a lower energy import bill due to declining oil prices, Fitch Solutions said this would drive Ghana’s current account surplus to an all time high of 6.9 percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2025. It expected foreign exchange reserves to increase from US$6.4 billion to US$11.5 billion.

Databank Research attributed the cedi’s expected stability to three key factors: Ghana’s gold reserves projected to strengthen after the 2024 elections, anticipated credit rating upgrades likely to boost investor confidence, and political stability expected to attract foreign direct investment and portfolio inflows.

The currency’s strength was not a temporary rally but sustained performance throughout a challenging year. Market participants cite tighter fiscal discipline, better coordination between fiscal and monetary policy, improved confidence in the broader economy, and stronger foreign exchange inflows that reduced panic demand for dollars.

Following Ghana’s Eurobond debt restructuring in 2024, Moody’s and Fitch upgraded the country’s ratings, with Moody’s moving its issuer rating from Caa3 to Caa2 and assigning a positive outlook. Databank predicted further upgrades as economic indicators improve, strengthening the cedi.

The cedi’s 2025 story demonstrates that economies can still surprise market forecasters. Forecasting currencies remains notoriously difficult, especially in economies exposed to global shocks, but the local currency’s performance serves as a reminder that structural reforms and policy discipline can produce measurable results.

As Ghana enters 2026, economists emphasize that maintaining the cedi’s strength will require continued government spending discipline, sustained policy coordination, boosted local production to reduce import pressure, and resistance to currency substitution at the first sign of uncertainty. The challenge now shifts from achieving stability to protecting it against complacency.

The unexpected performance has implications for inflation management, debt servicing capacity, and investor confidence. Ghana’s ability to maintain this trajectory will depend on whether the fiscal and monetary policies that supported the turnaround remain consistent throughout 2026.
