Tiebreak rules that could decide final places

The UCL league phase comes to an end tonight The UCL league phase comes to an end tonight

As the UEFA Champions League league phase reaches its dramatic conclusion tonight, January 28, 2026, the spotlight is not only on who wins and loses, but on how the final positions will actually be decided.

All 18 fixtures will be played simultaneously, with the table expected to shift minute by minute across Europe. The stakes are clear: the top eight teams qualify automatically for the Round of 16, while those finishing between 9th and 24th enter a knockout play-off round.

From there, eight more teams will advance to complete the last 16. Anyone finishing 25th or below is eliminated.

But with so many clubs separated by just a single point, the key question becomes: what happens if teams finish level?

Manchester United youngster Patrick Dorgu ruled out for month

UEFA has a strict tiebreaking system in place, and goal difference is the first separator. If two or more sides end the league phase on the same number of points, the team with the superior goal difference, the gap between goals scored and conceded, will rank higher.

If goal difference is identical, total goals scored comes next. Simply put, attacking output matters. Should teams remain inseparable, away goals scored becomes the third deciding factor, rewarding sides that have performed strongly on the road.

If that still does not settle matters, the number of wins is considered, followed by the number of away wins. Victories are prioritized over draws, and success away from home is given added importance.

Beyond that, UEFA introduces secondary tiebreakers based on the strength of opposition, including the total points earned by a team’s opponents, their goal difference, and the goals those opponents have scored. It is a system designed to reflect the overall difficulty of each club’s path.

And if everything remains level after all that, discipline could prove decisive. Yellow cards count as one point, red cards as three, and a second yellow leading to a red also counts as three. The team with the better disciplinary record will finish higher.

In a format this tight, every goal, every win, and even every booking could reshape the standings. Tonight, the margins will be microscopic and the final table may be decided by the smallest of details.
