Chivayo’s Children Make First Public Appearance alongside Their Mother as Mourners Gather in Harare

For the first time since the death of Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo, his children have appeared in public as the family continues to mourn the prominent businessman.

The children were seen at the family residence in Gletwin, Harare, where they joined their mother, Sonja Madzikanda, to grieve the loss. Their appearance came as relatives, friends and supporters continued arriving at the home to offer condolences and stand with the bereaved family.

Chivayo died on September 30 after a private helicopter he was travelling in crashed near Marondera, east of Harare. His wife, Lucy Muteke, and four other people aboard the aircraft were also killed in the incident.

The tragedy has generated widespread shock in Zimbabwe and beyond, with tributes continuing to emerge across social media. The appearance of Chivayo’s children alongside their mother was particularly emotional for mourners, who have expressed sympathy for the family during the difficult period.

Sonja had earlier visited the family home accompanied by her mother. Her subsequent appearance with the children has prompted further messages of support from members of the public, many of whom have encouraged the family to remain strong as they cope with the loss.

Chivayo was known for his high-profile lifestyle, major business interests and close relationships with influential figures. His death has attracted attention in both Zimbabwe and Kenya, where he was known to have had a friendship with President William Ruto.

His social media platforms have also become a focal point for mourners. His Instagram account has reportedly gained new followers, with many users posting messages honouring his memory and expressing their condolences.

Reports indicate that the helicopter departed from Gandami in Chikomba district, an area associated with Chivayo’s upbringing. Approximately 40 minutes into the journey, the aircraft crashed at Kudenga Farm near Marondera. Aviation authorities have since commenced investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the accident.

Meanwhile, the family is reportedly awaiting the arrival of relatives travelling from abroad before determining the burial date. In the meantime, mourners are expected to continue visiting the Gletwin residence.

The loss has placed Chivayo’s children at the centre of public attention as they navigate a deeply personal bereavement. Many sympathisers have called for them to be allowed the privacy, comfort and support needed as they mourn their father.
