WANTAM Chants Rocks the Air, Kindiki Forced to End His Speech and Flee Amid Clash With Youths
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki’s political activities in Limuru, Kiambu County, reportedly took an unexpected turn after loud “WANTAM” chants disrupted his address during a highly mobilised gathering.
According to reports emerging from the event, the atmosphere became increasingly tense as Kindiki spoke to residents. The chants reportedly grew louder, making it difficult for the Deputy President to continue addressing the crowd. He eventually brought his speech to an early end and left the venue.
National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah was also reportedly present at the gathering but is said to have departed as the chanting intensified.
There are also claims that some people attending the event had been paid Sh4,000 each to participate in the gathering. However, the allegation has not been independently verified, and there is no confirmed evidence establishing whether payments were made.
The reported incident comes at a time when Kindiki has intensified his political engagements across the Mt Kenya region as political leaders begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.
On Saturday, October 3, Kindiki addressed residents in Limuru, where he highlighted several government initiatives, including programmes targeting the dairy sector. He also spoke about efforts to combat the production and distribution of illicit alcohol.
Beyond government development projects, the Deputy President urged residents to embrace political tolerance. He cautioned against the use of ethnicity as a tool for political mobilisation, arguing that political disagreements should not result in hostility, division or violence.
However, the reported disruption highlights the increasingly competitive political environment in Mt Kenya, a region that remains politically significant ahead of the next election.
The “WANTAM” slogan has increasingly been associated with opposition to President William Ruto’s re-election bid. The slogan has featured prominently at political events involving former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and his Democratic Citizens Party (DCP).
The Limuru incident could therefore add to growing indications of political contestation in the region, as competing political groups seek to strengthen their influence and attract voters ahead of 2027.
The reported events also underscore the challenges political leaders may face when conducting public engagements in areas where competing political loyalties remain strong.
