Lucas Ribeiro Faces Career-Ending FIFA Ban if He Fails to Pay Sundowns R70 Million

Mamelodi Sundowns forward Lucas Ribeiro has found himself at the centre of renewed speculation over his future, with claims circulating online about an alleged multimillion-rand financial dispute involving the club.

Reports circulating on social media have claimed that the Brazilian owes Sundowns about US$4 million and faces a 45-day deadline to settle the alleged debt, with a possible FIFA playing ban if he fails to do so.

However, those claims could not be independently verified through a published FIFA disciplinary decision, an official Sundowns statement or another authoritative football source. There is therefore no confirmed basis to state that Ribeiro is currently facing a worldwide ban or that FIFA has imposed a specific 45-day deadline.

Ribeiro has been an important attacking player for Sundowns since joining the club and has attracted attention for his performances in South African and continental football. His future has also generated transfer speculation as clubs continue to monitor players from the Premier Soccer League.

A FIFA-imposed registration or playing ban is a serious sanction and normally follows a formal disciplinary process. Such sanctions are documented through official decisions and are subject to specific conditions and deadlines. A player’s inability to meet a contractual or financial obligation does not, by itself, establish that a worldwide playing ban has been imposed.

For now, supporters should treat the reported US$4 million debt and alleged 45-day deadline with caution until documentary evidence or an official statement confirms them.

The claims have nevertheless generated considerable discussion among South African football followers, particularly because Ribeiro remains a high-profile figure at Sundowns.

If an official FIFA ruling or court judgment emerges, it could significantly change the situation. Until then, the alleged debt and threat of a ban remain unverified claims rather than established facts.
