Rajasthan Police Action at Ganganagar Gurdwara Hurts Sikh Sentiments; SGPC Chief Dhami Condemns Arrest Of Tejinderpal Singh Timma
Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami has strongly condemned the alleged actions of Rajasthan Police at Gurdwara Baba Deep Singh Ji in Ganganagar, including alleged desecration of Guru ka Langar, tearing of posters of Sikh martyrs and the arrest of Sikh leader Bhai Tejinderpal Singh Timma.
Dhami said police action inside the gurdwara premises, particularly in the area where Guru ka Langar was being served, and the alleged tearing of posters associated with Giani Jarnail Singh Khalsa Bhindranwale and other Sikh martyrs had hurt Sikh religious sentiments.
He said legal and constitutional mechanisms were available to resolve any dispute and questioned the justification for such police action at a religious place.
The SGPC president also alleged that Timma, who has been raising issues concerning the Sikh community for a long time, had been arrested in what he described as a false case. He termed the action an attempt to suppress the Sikh voice and alleged that it reflected a discriminatory and high-handed approach towards Sikhs.
Dhami called upon the Rajasthan government and police administration to order an impartial investigation into the entire incident at Gurdwara Baba Deep Singh Ji in Ganganagar.
He also demanded strict action against those responsible for any conduct that violated the sanctity of the gurdwara or hurt the religious sentiments of the Sikh community. He further sought an impartial investigation into the case registered against Timma and demanded his immediate release.
Dhami said people belonging to all religions have a constitutional right to follow their religious beliefs and traditions and maintain the sanctity of their religious institutions. He said discrimination or coercive action against any religious community was contrary to constitutional and democratic values.
He added that the incident had caused strong resentment among Sikh devotees and urged the Rajasthan government to recognise the seriousness of the situation and take immediate steps for Timma’s release.
