Building Bridges: Timeline Established for Cristiano Ronaldo’s Return to Portugal as the Legend Aims to Break Goal Record
October 4, 2026 sportnow CRISTIANO RONALDO is rumored to be making a return to the Portugal national team next year following a dramatic exit from their training camp.
The Manchester United icon, now 41, put his international future at risk after clashing with manager Jorge Jesus earlier this week.
Ronaldo expressed his frustration after being benched during Portugal’s Nations League victory against Norway.
However, his determination to reach 1,000 career goals is likely to lead him back to the national team in 2027.
Portuguese journalist Miguel Pereira shared with talkSPORT: “What matters is the 21 goals he needs to score.
“He aspired to score his last goal with Portugal the same way Pele celebrated his 1,000th goal.

“He hoped to net that goal by the end of the season in a match with Portugal.
“He expected to score 15 to 20 goals during the season with Al-Nassr.
“But he genuinely wanted a celebration to mark his achievements, his ego, and his legacy with the national team.
“I believe that will still happen. Even though the situation seems complex now, if we were discussing this the day after the incident, it would be more complicated to analyze.

“Currently, I really believe that bridges are being built between Cristiano’s camp and that of Jesus.
“The Portuguese federation is keen on having Cristiano involved due to the publicity it generates.
“I anticipate Ronaldo will make his comeback for one last performance with the national team later next year.”
Ronaldo issued a statement confirming his departure from the national team’s training camp after chief Jesus, 72, stated there were no issues between them.
The statement read: “Following the national team’s press conference and a discussion with the President of the Portuguese Football Federation, I have decided to leave the training camp.
“In due time, I will reveal the truth behind my departure to the Portuguese people.”
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has called for reconciliation between his teammate and the manager.
He said: “I spoke with Cristiano Ronaldo and reminded him that he is and will always be the GREATEST symbol of our national team and our country.
“Our national team stands united, not divided. Issues must be resolved internally and benefit both sides.”
Ronaldo has scored an impressive 146 goals in 234 appearances for Portugal.
