Pakistan, Afghanistan to attend Moscow talks tomorrow amid tensions
ISLAMABAD : Pakistan and Afghanistan will attend a key regional meeting in Moscow on October 5 (Monday), offering another opportunity for dialogue as relations between Islamabad and the Afghan Taliban remain strained over terrorism and cross-border security concerns.
An official at Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) told Dunya News that Pakistan’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, Mohammad Sadiq, will lead the country’s delegation to the eighth round of Moscow Format consultations on Afghanistan.
Pakistan-Afghanistan tensions are expected to feature prominently in regional discussions at the meeting, which brings together key stakeholders to discuss developments in Afghanistan and regional security concerns.
The Pakistani delegation will also include Naeem Iqbal Cheema, Director-General for Afghanistan, Iran and Turkiye at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Pakistan’s Ambassador to Afghanistan, Ubaid-ur-Rehman Nizamani; and Pakistan’s Ambassador to Russia, Faisal Niaz Tirmizi.
Afghan Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi will lead the Taliban delegation at the meeting.
However, no bilateral meeting between Sadiq and Muttaqi has so far been scheduled.
Asked about the possibility of a meeting between the two officials, a Taliban official told Afghanistan International: “We have not requested any meeting.”
