JUST IN: 8 Zamfara Lawmakers Dump APC Ahead of 2027

Eight members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly have resigned their membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in a fresh political development ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The lawmakers announced their decision during plenary in Gusau, the Zamfara State capital, where their defection was formally communicated to the House.

The affected lawmakers represent Mafara South, Maradun I, Bakura, Bukkuyum North, Gummi I, Bungudu North, Maru North and Kaura constituencies.

Their decision has added a new twist to the political situation in Zamfara, where the major political parties have intensified efforts to strengthen their structures ahead of the next general elections.

The lawmakers have not, at the time of filing this report, publicly stated the political party they intend to join.

However, there are indications that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) could be their next destination, given the ongoing political realignments in the state.

The latest defection is also coming after a series of movements involving politicians in Zamfara in recent months.

Zamfara state has witnessed several changes in political allegiance as the 2027 elections draw closer.

The APC and PDP have remained at the centre of the contest, while other political platforms are also working to attract influential politicians and elected officials.

The Zamfara Assembly has itself been at the centre of political disagreements in the state in recent years.

The House previously witnessed a prolonged crisis involving different factions and lawmakers.

In December 2025, six members of the Assembly who were associated with the PDP announced their defection to the APC.

That earlier move came after the lawmakers accused the leadership of the legislature and the state government of various political and constitutional infractions.

They also raised concerns about the internal crisis within their former party.

The political situation later changed significantly after Governor Dauda Lawal moved from the PDP to the APC in March 2026.

Following the governor’s defection, the Speaker of the House, Bilyaminu Moriki, and 12 other lawmakers also left the PDP for the APC.

Their movement gave the APC control of all 24 seats in the Zamfara State House of Assembly at the time.

The lawmakers had said the decision was taken to support the governor and improve cooperation between the state and federal governments.

One of the arguments presented at the time was that closer cooperation with the federal government could help the state attract more development.

The latest movement has now altered that political arrangement.

The eight lawmakers leaving the APC include representatives of some constituencies that have featured prominently in previous political disputes within the state legislature.

Zamfara state has also continued to face serious security challenges, making security, governance and development important issues in the political conversation.

The lawmakers cite issues such as party leadership, political differences, development, internal crises and the interests of their constituents when explaining their decisions to change parties.

Nonetheless, the APC leadership in Zamfara has yet to issue a detailed public reaction to the lawmakers’ decision.

It is also unclear whether the eight lawmakers will formally join the PDP or move to another political platform.
