Tanzania calls on clerics to educate the public on Zakatul Maal which requires Muslims to give charity from their wealth

DODOMA: TANZANIAN Imams have been urged to strengthen public education on Zakatul Maal to enable Muslims who meet the required threshold to fulfil the Islamic obligation of giving charity from their wealth.

The call was made in Dodoma by the Spokesperson for the Dodoma Regional Sheikh, Sheikh Ahmed Saidi, during a training session on Zakatul Maal for Imams and religious leaders in the region.

Sheikh Ahmed said Imams have an important role in educating worshippers about the significance of Zakatul Maal, particularly Muslims whose wealth has reached the prescribed threshold for Zakat.

He said strengthened awareness among worshippers would help ensure that eligible Muslims understand their religious obligations and contribute to supporting people entitled to receive Zakat.

A member of the Council of Ulamaa from the Muslim University of Morogoro (MUM), Dr Bilal Majuva, explained the Islamic principles and procedures governing the payment of Zakatul Maal.

The training also featured the Executive Director of TAMPRO, Mrisho Mbwembwe, who explained the operations of the Baytul Maal Tanzania Zakat Fund, including the collection and distribution of Zakat to eligible beneficiaries.

Imam Suleiman Abdallah Juma of the Imams and Preachers Platform (JUMADA) said the training was aimed at strengthening the capacity of Imams and religious leaders to provide accurate information to communities on Zakatul Maal.

One of the participants, Ustadh Said Juma, said the training had enhanced his understanding of Zakat and equipped him with knowledge that would help him communicate the subject more effectively to worshippers.

Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam and requires eligible Muslims to give a prescribed portion of qualifying wealth to designated beneficiaries, helping support vulnerable members of society.
