The victim, named by the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office as Edimari Hernandez Chacon, was walking on a sidewalk in the Chatham neighborhood on Saturday when a woman launched a sudden assault in broad daylight. The woman confronted Edimari with a sharp object at approximately 11:55am in the 8600 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue and stabbed her "multiple times in the back," according to the Chicago Police Department.

Witnesses to the horrific attack subdued the woman suspected of the stabbing until officers arrived on scene. Edimari was transported to Comer Children's Hospital, where she was declared dead.

Chilling surveillance footage reveals the 7 year old was holding hands with a woman moments before the attack. The video also recorded the moment witnesses rushed to restrain the suspect, who remained outside the camera's view.

The woman sustained injuries while being restrained by witnesses, according to police. She was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries and remains in police custody.

Charges are pending. Authorities have not disclosed whether the girl and the suspect were acquainted or if the attack was unprovoked.

The incident remains under investigation. Witnesses were left shocked by the attack.

"The poor baby had nothing to do with what was going on," one woman told NBC Chicago. "I just don't know what this world is coming to … for a seven-year-old like that to be getting stabbed," local resident Denesta Freeman said.

"As a mom, I feel hurt! Because my daughter is the same age. I feel hurt! I feel like it was my child," another local woman said.

Members of Edimari's family assembled outside Comer Children's Hospital in the aftermath of the attack. They were observed weeping and holding each other hours after the stabbing occurred.

"I am deeply saddened by the senseless stabbing of a 7 year old child in our neighborhood. My heart goes out to her family, friends, and everyone who is affected by this horrific incident," Ald. Michelle Harris of the 8th Ward said in a statement.

She continued: "No child should ever have to experience violence or fear while simply walking down the sidewalk. I also want to recognize and thank the bystanders who quickly intervened-helping to detain the suspect and get assistance on the way. Their quick actions may have prevented further harm.

"I urge anyone with information to contact the Chicago Police Department. Our community must come together to support the victim and hold the perpetrator accountable."

She instructed anyone with additional information to call 773-874-3300.
