Green Anaconda Strikes Bakkie on South African Dirt Road, Leaving Mzansi Stunned

A video showing what appears to be a massive green anaconda lunging at a bakkie on a rural dirt road has sparked widespread reaction on social media, with viewers questioning how the South American snake may have ended up in South Africa.

The footage was reportedly shared by South African snake-catching page Slangboere on September 30, 2026. Recorded from inside a moving vehicle, the video shows a bakkie travelling along a dirt road before approaching a large snake lying close to the roadside.

As the vehicle moves past, the snake suddenly lunges towards the bakkie, creating a dramatic encounter that appears to catch those inside the vehicle by surprise.

Slangboere identified the reptile as a green anaconda and reportedly addressed speculation that the footage could have been generated or altered using artificial intelligence. According to the page, the video was genuine and showed a real green anaconda.

The reported sighting has attracted particular attention because green anacondas are native to South America and are not indigenous to South Africa. However, the exact location where the footage was recorded has not been disclosed, leaving the circumstances surrounding the snake’s presence unclear.

Some social media users speculated that the reptile may have escaped from captivity or been kept illegally as an exotic pet. There has been no confirmed information establishing either possibility.

The snake’s reaction to the approaching vehicle has also generated discussion. Slangboere reportedly explained that the anaconda would not necessarily identify the bakkie as a vehicle. Its movement and size may instead have been perceived as a potential threat, causing the snake to react defensively.

Green anacondas are among the world’s largest snakes and are known for their powerful bodies and ability to constrict prey. Their size and strength have contributed to the fascination surrounding the footage.

The unusual encounter has also prompted humorous reactions online, with some users joking about the snake’s sudden appearance and others questioning how it could have reached the area.

Despite the attention generated by the video, several key details remain unknown. The precise location has not been confirmed, and there is no verified evidence explaining where the snake came from or whether it had escaped from captivity.

For now, the footage remains an unusual wildlife encounter that has sparked a mixture of curiosity, concern and humour among social media users while questions surrounding the green anaconda’s presence in South Africa remain unanswered.
