Ndindi Nyoro has outlined how he would seek to transform Kenya’s education sector if elected president in the 2027 General Election, placing free basic education and better support for learners at the centre of his political agenda.

The Kiharu MP and People’s Party of Kenya leader has been openly positioning himself for the 2027 presidential race while campaigning against President William Ruto’s re-election bid.

Nyoro has proposed making basic education free from January 2028, with learners also receiving meals at school. He has said the plan would ensure children from poor families are not locked out of education because their parents cannot afford school costs.

His wider education proposal also includes free secondary education. Nyoro has suggested using funds from the national government, counties and NG-CDF to support the programme, which he estimates could benefit millions of learners across the country.

The politician has also proposed additional funding for university students under a more inclusive higher education financing model. He has called for about KSh80 billion to be added to help ensure qualified students can access higher education.

Nyoro has further spoken about improving school infrastructure, including classrooms, laboratories and other learning facilities. He has also proposed reforms targeting ECDE teachers, including a national framework for their employment and salaries.

His education message comes as he intensifies grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 election. Recent reports show him taking his political campaign across different parts of the country while urging opposition leaders to unite behind one presidential candidate.

Nyoro says these proposals would form part of his wider plan for Kenya if the opposition takes power.

However, the 2027 election is yet to be held, meaning his proposed reforms remain political pledges rather than implemented government programmes.
