The footage appears to show a red Toyota Hi-Ace minibus taxi approaching the intersection while the three lanes travelling straight ahead are occupied by vehicles waiting for a green light.
Instead of joining the queue, the taxi can be seen travelling through the intersection using the lane designated for traffic turning right.
As the taxi enters the intersection, vehicles travelling across its path from the left are already moving through the junction.
A black Mercedes-Benz G63 appears to spot the taxi approaching and brakes heavily, narrowly avoiding a collision.
The silver Mercedes-Benz C-Class travelling alongside the G63 is not as fortunate.
The taxi crashes into the C-Class, with the force of the impact sending both vehicles off the intersection. The taxi overturns and almost immediately bursts into flames.
The footage provides a clearer picture of how the crash unfolded, although the video itself does not establish the legal cause of the collision. The circumstances remain subject to investigation.
According to JMPD, the taxi driver, an adult male, sustained serious injuries and was taken to Tembisa Hospital.
Five passengers in the taxi, two men and three women, died in the crash. Their bodies were burnt beyond recognition.
A further 10 taxi passengers suffered injuries ranging from slight to serious and were taken to various hospitals.
The driver of the Mercedes-Benz G63 was not injured, while the female driver of the C-Class and two children travelling in that vehicle escaped without injury.
The crash initially prompted the complete closure of the intersection, with major traffic delays reported around Waterfall and Midrand.
JMPD is investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision, a culpable homicide was registered at Midrand SAPS.
