Gachagua Reveals the Only Role Uhuru Kenyatta Would Play in the Opposition
Gachagua said he had never seen Uhuru’s money, outlining when the former president will be involved in the affairs of the opposition.
Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has outlined the sole condition under which the opposition would call on former president Uhuru Kenyatta over their political matters.
Gachagua, while speaking on Saturday, October 3, during a townhall community engagement in Marlborough, Massachusetts, in the United States, pushed back firmly against President William Ruto’s repeated assertions that Uhuru is bankrolling the opposition against his administration.
The former deputy president categorically denied that the opposition has received any financial support from Uhuru Kenyatta, challenging Ruto to produce evidence for the allegations.
“I have never seen a single shilling from Uhuru Kenyatta. In fact, my guy was telling him today, ‘If you have some money, why don’t you just give it to us then? So that when you are accused, you are accused rightly,'” Gachagua said.
He went further, telling Ruto directly to stop targeting the retired president and focus instead on his political opponents who are actually on the ballot.
“We have told President William Ruto, please stop attacking former president Uhuru Kenyatta. And he has said he’s not your competitor. Uhuru Kenyatta will not be on the ballot. He’s retired. Why are you bashing him?” Gachagua said.

Gachagua insisted that the opposition is financially self-sufficient and does not require external sponsorship to mount a credible challenge in the next general election.
“We are telling William Ruto we don’t need any sponsorship from Uhuru Kenyatta. Uhuru Kenyatta has no role to play in the next election,” he said.
Despite ruling out any political or financial involvement, Gachagua acknowledged there is one narrow circumstance under which Uhuru’s participation would be welcomed.
That would be when the opposition fails to agree in-house on who the presidential candidate against Ruto should be.
“The only role I will request Uhuru Kenyatta to play at the right time, as my older brother, as our kinsman, is that if we are having challenges when we are talking among ourselves and we need an elder to guide us so that we do not fight each other very much, we will call him as an elder to lead us,” Gachagua said.
He was emphatic that this advisory role would only come into play if internal disagreements within the opposition required the steadying hand of a respected elder statesman, not as an operational or financial figure in the campaign.
Gachagua also sought to reassure supporters that the opposition’s campaign would not be expensive, citing the Ol Kalou experience as proof that their voter base does not require financial inducements.
“This election, we don’t need money. The money we need is very little for food and fuel. Our voters don’t need to be bribed. And this was demonstrated in Ol Kalou,” he said.
His remarks came in direct response to Ruto’s recent public statements accusing Uhuru of using opposition structures to destabilise his government ahead of the 2027 general election.
Gachagua is on record maintaining that the opposition will rally behind a credible contender to take on Ruto in 2027, warning that premature declarations could hand the president a tactical edge.
He assured supporters that unity would hold, with extensive consultations guiding the choice of the strongest challenger.
Alongside him, the lineup features Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua, Eugene Wamalwa, Fred Matiang’i and Edwin Sifuna, all of whom have declared presidential ambitions.
He once said that those left off the ballot would still be earmarked for influential roles such as parliamentary leadership and Cabinet posts if their side forms the next government.
