“This Is One Of The Most Nonsensical Campaign Statements I’ve Heard”—Hawa Koomson Told After Promise

Social commentator Bongo Ideas has criticised former Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development Hawa Koomson over a reported campaign promise to provide pepper spray to women if elected as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Women’s Organiser.

In a Facebook post, Bongo Ideas reacted to a statement attributed to Koomson that she would ensure every woman receives pepper spray if she wins the position.

“Sorry to say, but this is one of the most nonsensical campaign statements I’ve heard,” he wrote.

He questioned the relevance of the proposal to Koomson’s bid to lead the NPP’s women’s wing, arguing that her campaign should instead focus on policies and initiatives aimed at addressing the concerns of women and strengthening the party.

Bongo Ideas also questioned whether distributing pepper spray would effectively address the challenges facing women, while expressing concern that such a campaign message could promote a culture of confrontation.

“How does giving women pepper spray solve their problems?” he asked.

He said candidates contesting party positions should use their campaigns to promote peace and explain what they intend to do for the party if elected.

Bongo Ideas further linked his criticism to Koomson’s political history, referencing the controversy surrounding a gunshot incident during the 2020 voter-registration exercise in her constituency, while also referring generally to concerns about election-related violence.

“With the history of election-day violence and the gunshot controversy surrounding the 2020 voter-registration exercise in her constituency, I’m not even surprised hearing a statement like this,” he stated.

He ended his post by expressing disbelief at the nature of the campaign message and directed followers to his Telegram channel to watch the video containing the reported remarks.

Koomson is among the candidates seeking national office within the NPP as delegates prepare to elect the party’s national executives.
