Global oil prices have been trending upward amid renewed tensions between Iran and the United States, affecting fuel prices worldwide and putting upward pressure on prices in Pakistan as well.

Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad, Federal Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik said the government was aware of the difficulties caused by rising fuel prices. He said Pakistan had been compelled to increase petroleum prices due to developments in the international oil market.

Ali Pervaiz Malik said the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has always placed national interests first and would take whatever measures were necessary to protect ordinary citizens during difficult circumstances.

He said that as soon as international oil prices decline, relief would also be provided to the public.

The federal minister said the ongoing war had affected the region and reiterated that consumers would be given relief once prices in the global market came down.

He also expressed concern over the resurgence of terrorism in the country, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Addressing the KP chief minister, Malik urged him to set aside political rhetoric for the time being and recognize his national responsibilities.

He also called on the country’s political leadership to put aside differences and unite in the national interest.

Ali Pervaiz Malik urged political leaders not to allow narrow political interests to harm the country and future generations. He said this was the time to stand behind the military leadership in efforts to eliminate terrorism.
